Privacy Lawyer (Secondment) - Melbourne (Hybrid) - 8+ Years PAE

We are seeking an experienced privacy lawyer with a minimum of 8 years’ experience, bringing a strong track record from private practice or in-house roles within large organisations. Experience in telecommunications is highly regarded, though not essential if you have worked in a highly regulated environment.

Key responsibilities:

• Advise on privacy law and regulatory compliance within telecommunications, technology, financial services, or other highly regulated sectors
• Provide legal advice on telecommunications-specific privacy obligations, including protected information requirements under Part 13 of the Telecommunications Act
• Advise on obligations under the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act, including interception, data retention, and law enforcement access
• Support regulatory reform and compliance uplift programs, including implementation of new legislative requirements
• Identify and manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risks associated with privacy and telecommunications regulation
• Advise on governance, compliance, and regulatory matters within a large corporate or in-house legal environment
• Support regulatory projects involving privacy reform, cyber security, data governance, consumer protection, or telecommunications compliance
• Engage effectively with legal, risk, privacy, compliance, regulatory, and operational teams
• Act as a subject matter expert and primary point of contact for privacy-related legal issues

About you:

• Current Australian practising certificate
• Right to live and work in Australia
• Have or be prepared to obtain security clearance
• Strong technical expertise with the confidence to act as the lead privacy specialist within the team
• Highly analytical, able to interpret complex legislative and regulatory frameworks
• Capable of working autonomously and exercising sound judgement on complex legal and regulatory matters
• Resilient and adaptable in an evolving and uncertain regulatory environment
• Excellent stakeholder management skills, able to build credibility and trusted relationships across the organisation
• Strong communication skills, able to explain complex regulatory concepts clearly and practically
• Effective prioritisation and time management skills, managing multiple competing matters calmly under pressure
• Committed to continuous learning and staying abreast of evolving privacy, telecommunications, and regulatory developments
