This is a contract opportunity (minimum 3 months, potentially up to 12 months) with a hybrid working arrangement, based in Brisbane.
We are seeking an experienced privacy lawyer with at least 8 years' post-qualification experience, ideally gained in a large in-house or private practice environment. While a background in telecommunications is advantageous, we welcome candidates with experience in other highly regulated sectors.
Your expertise will cover:
- Advising on privacy law and regulatory compliance, particularly the Privacy Act and Australian Privacy Principles
- Handling telecommunications-specific privacy obligations, including Part 13 of the Telecommunications Act
- Interpreting and applying the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act, including data retention and law enforcement access requirements
- Supporting regulatory reform and compliance uplift programs, and implementing new legislative requirements
- Managing legal, regulatory, and reputational risks tied to privacy and telecommunications
- Providing guidance on governance, compliance, and regulatory matters
- Engaging with privacy, cyber security, data governance, and consumer protection issues
- Addressing sensitive customer matters, such as hardship, vulnerability, and domestic violence
- Collaborating across legal, risk, privacy, compliance, regulatory, and operational teams
You will act as a subject matter expert and primary point of contact for privacy-related legal issues, with strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work autonomously in a complex regulatory landscape. Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
- Current Australian practising certificate
- Right to work in Australia
- Must hold or be willing to obtain security clearance
