Patent Agent – Chemistry (Patent Prosecution)

About the Role

We are seeking a patent agent with an advanced degree in medicinal or organic chemistry to join our Intellectual Property Prosecution team. In this role, you will work under the guidance of partners and focus primarily on patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and due diligence. The position is open to candidates based in Boston or Washington, DC.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess scientific literature, patents, and patent application documents across organic, synthetic, medicinal chemistry, and materials science.
• Understand, critique, and provide insightful opinions on scientific data related to inventions.
• Conduct comprehensive prior art searches and perform in-depth analyses comparing inventions with existing discoveries.
• Draft patent applications, including background, detailed descriptions, and claims.
• Prepare responses to office actions from the USPTO and other global patent offices, providing detailed scientific and legal analysis.
• Present ideas and conclusions clearly to colleagues and collaboratively build IP portfolios with clients on cutting-edge technologies.

Qualifications

• USPTO admission required.
• Ph.D. in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry, or a minimum of three years of post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience.
• At least two years of patent prosecution experience.
• Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively in team settings.

Work Environment

This role requires working from the office approximately 60% of the time, in accordance with our published guidelines.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $130,000–$230,000, and the role is bonus-eligible. We offer a comprehensive benefits package.

• USPTO admission required
• Ph.D. in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry, or at least three years of post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience
• Minimum of two years of patent prosecution experience
• Ability to present scientific concepts clearly to both scientists and non-scientists
