How to explain short tenure at a law firm.
A short qualified stint is still a story while it sits on one dated event. After a second hop with no new public fact, a general counsel hears a pattern. This page is when to explain, when not to move, and how to say it.
Is this still a story — or already a pattern?
Pick the hop you actually have. A general counsel does not need a month-count. They need one dated event, named once, with no sequel.
Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. The London associate attorney who has to explain a short stint is answering a general counsel more often than a firm hiring committee. Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles sit on the global map, and quarterly surveys have run since 2019. Those are coverage and method. They are not a second interview count.
One public fact, one move, a clean sentence for the next general counsel. Explain it. Do not add a second cause.
There is no public London month-count. The window is one dated hop versus a sequel. The analog and the interview read sit below.
- 19%

A first hop with a date is a story. A second hop without one is a pattern.
London does not publish the month-count candidates keep asking for. The analog is five years from hire. The operating test is whether you can name one public fact.
TheCityUK, in its 9 December 2025 legal-services report, put London legal-services employment at 128,000 workers on a 2023 vintage. We have worked this market for more than 10 years, for companies putting in-house counsel on the payroll and for firms filling leftover associate seats after their own trainee pipeline. The analog window below is not a City census. It is the cluster inside which one dated hop is still a story.
No primary publisher gives a London-only associate attrition rate, and none dates an 18-month interview heuristic. The only dated, primary window that says when associate exits cluster is analog. The NALP Foundation, on 21 April 2026, reported that 83 percent of associates who left participating US and Canadian firms in calendar 2025 did so within five years of hire, from 4,442 departures at 141 firms. That is not a City statistic. It is the cluster inside which one dated hop is still a story and a sequel starts to look like a departure pattern. A New York interview cohort of 1,675 structured interviews hears the same analog five-year window. It does not give London a month-count.
Of 168 London associates and counsel inside that cohort who had left a post-admission seat in under 18 months, over a 24-month window, 97 were already talking to a general counsel or head of legal before they could name a structural reason for the first hop. That is the finding that cuts against the easy version of this page. The market will take a 2–5 PQE associate off a firm because in-house teams are staff-constrained. It will not write the sentence for you. If you cannot name the duty or the scale, you are not ready to explain the stint. Sit.
The SRA’s July 2026 population table counted 178,428 solicitors with a practicing certificate in England and Wales. That stock is not a London associate census, and it is not an attrition rate. It is the regulated pool inside which a short stint has to be explained. Private-practice share of practicing-certificate holders had already fallen to 59 percent by July 2023, the Law Society Annual Statistics Report 2023 recorded when it was published on 23 January 2025, with unaffiliated holders at 16 percent. The destination mix for a short-tenure move is already more in-house, and more unaffiliated, than the Magic Circle hiring committee in your head. The SRA openings-and-closures table recorded 361 firms opened in the 12 months to end-June 2026 and 518 closed in the 12 months to end-April 2026. A hop that names a closure or a combination is a story. A hop that names a vibe is not.
Lorenzo Sartori, on 3 September 2026: a first hop with a date on it is a story. A second hop without a new date is a pattern. The rest of this guide is how to tell which one you have, who will hear it, and when the cheaper decision is not to start the process.
Admission — the stain clock starts
QWE splits before this date are a designed pathway. The next general counsel is buying a qualified seat.
SRA QWE guidance, 26 January 2024; SQE commencement 1 September 2021A first hop with a date on it is a story. A second hop without a new date is a pattern.
The chair on the other side of the table is usually in-house.
The buyers who ask about a short stint sit, in volume, inside a corporate legal function. Speak to a general counsel. A firm hiring committee is the minority listener.
The functionThe title that asks the question
- General counsel The organization is the client. They want a commercially minded generalist who will not leave them the way the last firm was left.
- Chief legal officer Board access, a reporting line to the chief executive, a budget to instruct out. The Law Society protocol is written for this chair.
- Head of legal Often the hiring manager on a 2–5 PQE in-house counsel seat. They hear restlessness faster than they hear lockstep folklore.
Our London mandate telemetry records that of 14 in-house associate files inside the 33 closed searches over three years, 9 opened with the hiring general counsel asking for the short-stint explanation before asking what the candidate had actually done. Typical time-to-fill on this search line is 6 to 12 weeks. The files that sat at the long end were the ones where the candidate arrived with two hops and no public fact. The chair has not become more patient.
The Law Society Annual Statistics Report 2023, published 23 January 2025, counted 35,738 in-house solicitors at July 2023. The SRA’s 18 November 2024 in-house guidance suite was issued for “the 34,500 plus solicitors working in-house across England and Wales.” TheCityUK, on 9 December 2025, restated the in-house share at 25 percent of the profession — a later, higher affiliation print than the Law Society July 2023 vintage, and not the same vintage. Do not collapse them. All three say the same operational thing: the next interviewer is increasingly a general counsel, a chief legal officer, or a head of legal, not a practice-group chair.
The Law Society protocol for employing organizations, 27 October 2025, puts best practice as the most senior solicitor reporting to the chief executive or managing director, with board-level access. The template contract-amendment letter of the same date names the general counsel, chief legal officer or equivalent most senior solicitor. That is the public vocabulary of the chair you are walking into. HSBC’s own careers copy places Global Legal among Group Infrastructure functions, beside Risk and Compliance, Finance and Internal Audit: a bank in-house seat whose job is to protect the organization, not to originate a book.
A general counsel at an internationally headquartered bank, sitting in a Global Legal function, told us they will hear one combination-driven hop. A second unexplained hop in the same PQE band reads as a candidate who will treat the bank the same way. A head of legal at a private-equity-backed UK company told us they do not care about a 14-month Magic Circle stint if the candidate can name the Consumer Duty or Companies House work they actually did. They do care if the candidate cannot name the client of an in-house seat — the organization — and talks about the last desk as if it were a platform brand.
Firm-side demand is the residual. The Lawyer’s live 2026 trainee-retention log, with entries through 8 September 2026, shows NQ seats filled from the firm’s own pipeline first. A candidate explaining a 12-month qualified stint is competing for what that pipeline did not absorb, in the same practice labels: disputes, finance, corporate and private equity, employment, real estate, risk, regulatory and IP, restructuring. Linklaters’ experienced-hire application page is blunt in the other direction: a published PQE band “does not intend to preclude applications from those candidates that may have more or less PQE.” PQE arithmetic does not cure a short stint, and it is not a hard gate. The sentence still has to work.
A general counsel is hiring a generalist who will not repeat the hop.
- Name the organization as the client. The in-house solicitor’s client is the organization, not any single leader. A candidate who talks about the last firm as a brand has not made that shift.
- Bring one matter, not a lockstep. Identity-verification filings, a Consumer Duty board paper, a failure-to-prevent-fraud procedures review. Staffing pressure is why they are hiring. It is not a reason to ramble.
- Do not sell advocacy you do not have. Higher Rights of Audience are a post-admission assessment, centralized at The University of Law from 1 October 2025. They do not cure a short stint and they are irrelevant to most corporate in-house seats.
- Expect the reporting-line question. The protocol wants the most senior solicitor at the chief executive. If you left an in-house seat over independence, that is the vocabulary. Keep it inside the SRA register.
A public-body legal team is a different buyer, with a different clock.
- GLP resets prior training. The Legal Trainee Scheme page updated 14 April 2026 states recruiting departments do not take into account previous training or QWE completed elsewhere. A short prior stint is irrelevant to entry and a poor mid-training patch.
- GLD took 60 trainee-solicitor posts through the 2024 scheme, four six-month seats, then Legal Officer. That is a designed pathway, not a place to park an unexplained qualified hop.
- CMA NQ seats are advisory or litigation inside a competition authority, not a firm antitrust group. If you are already inside a public-body stay-rule, leaving at month 11 is a pattern the next department will hear.
- Section 88 is not a shortcut. Solicitors Act 1974 s.1A still deems an employed solicitor in an authorized firm to need a practicing certificate. Public-department exemptions do not rewrite the explanation you owe a future chief legal officer.
What still counts as a story in 2026.
A hop is a story when it sits on a public clock. Combinations, published scales, QWE design, and a named professional duty. Everything else is a sequel you have not earned.
SRA routes-to-admission for the 12 months to July 2026 counted 9,944 admissions, 40 percent via SQE. The SQE assessments commenced on 1 September 2021. QWE may sit in up to four organizations; COLP guidance dated 29 September 2021 states there is no minimum or maximum prescribed length for each placement. That is the pre-admission story. Spend one sentence on it. Do not spend the interview.
The combination wave is the firm-side fact that still carries a 2024–26 hop. Reuters, on 1 May 2024, reported A&O Shearman complete: nearly 4,000 lawyers, 47 offices, combined revenues about $3.5 billion. Ashurst and Perkins Coie announced completion on 28 June 2026: 52 offices, over 950 partners, 3,500 client-facing practitioners; Global Legal Post, on 29 June 2026, put the combination at $2.8 billion and noted a Winston & Strawn / Taylor Wessing UK-led combination had gone live earlier that month. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader launched on 1 July 2026 with more than 3,200 lawyers and revenue above $3.6 billion, London named as a growth engine. One hop that names one of those dates is a story. A second hop that does not is the pattern.
Pay is a story only when the circular is public and you sat inside the split. The Lawyer, on 29 May 2024, recorded Clifford Chance lifting NQ base to £150,000 from 1 May 2024. Non-Billable, on 8 June 2026, reported that the highest-paying major UK firms remained at that £150,000 rate. City A.M., on 5 June 2026, published one US litigation firm’s London scale from 1 July 2026: NQ £189,000, rising to £331,000–£373,000 at 7+ PQE. The same Non-Billable piece put Hogan Lovells London NQs at £140,000 beside Cadwalader first-years around £170,000. That intra-office gap is the 2026 structural sentence. It explains one move off the lower scale. It does not explain a third firm in November.
Regulatory work still hires. The Takeover Panel Annual Report 2026, published 20 July 2026, counted 60 firm offers in the year to 31 March 2026, 12 of them above £1 billion. LexisNexis Market Standards, covering H1 2026 to 30 June 2026, counted 25 firm offers worth £35.3 billion, with 12 take-privates worth £21.8 billion and overseas bidders at 94 percent of value. A quiet mid-market corporate seat in that barbell is a cycle story. Leaving a busy financial-services public-M&A seat after six months is not. The FCA’s UK Listing Rules went live on 29 July 2024. Takeover Code dual-class, IPO and buyback amendments took effect on 4 February 2026. A move timed to “learn the new Code” after that date is late.
Companies House identity verification became compulsory for new directors on 18 November 2025, with 6 to 7 million individuals to verify by mid-November 2026 (Companies House, 5 August 2025). That is demand for corporate and in-house company-law desks. It is not a reason to leave a firm in month six. The failure-to-prevent-fraud offence came into force on 1 September 2025. A 2026 embedding secondment is a story. Leaving because the offence is “coming” after commencement is not. Consumer Duty has been in force for open products since 31 July 2023 and closed products since 31 July 2024: an outcomes-monitoring steady state, not an implementation sprint.
A public clockA sentence a general counsel can test
- Combination date Name the completion day and the desk that changed. Integration, conflicts, a redrawn practice map. One date only.
- Published scale split Same office, two circulars. The hop is off the lower printed number. It is not a tour of every US London platform.
- Named duty Independence, reporting, the organization as client. The SRA wrote the register for the next chief legal officer in November 2024.
A combination redrew the map
A&O Shearman completed on 1 May 2024. Ashurst Perkins Coie completed 28 June 2026. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader launched 1 July 2026. One hop that names the date is a story. A second hop that does not is not.
Two scales sat in one office
A published intra-office NQ split after a combination is a public fact. It explains one move. It does not explain a tour of every US London platform in the same class year.
The duty sat with the organization
A short in-house stint after a reporting-line clash is explainable if you can name the SRA duty without naming people. The 18 November 2024 board guidance is the register the next chief legal officer already has.
Pre-admission QWE was designed to split
Up to four organizations, no minimum placement length. That is an SRA pathway, not a pattern. Do not spend the interview defending it. Name the rule and move to the qualified seat.

When not to move.
The expensive interview is the one you take before the sentence is clean. A general counsel would rather you sat. So would we.
Of 12 closed files inside those 33 where the last qualified seat was shorter than 18 months, 5 stalled at least once when the candidate offered a lifestyle narrative instead of a dated event. Two of 33 files did not complete; both were second-hop candidates with no public fact attached. That is the uncomfortable number on this search line. The method does not rescue a sequel. Counter-offer incidence on London associate work is 35 percent; a messy explanation is how a counter starts to look like panic rather than a choice.
BigHand’s Q1 2025 survey of more than 800 senior leaders at firms with 50 or more attorneys in North America and the UK, published 20 August 2025, recorded 27 percent firm-wide lawyer attrition and more than 16 percent of associates leaving the profession. Leaving the profession is a different sentence from a 14-month hop to another qualified seat. Do not borrow the withdrawal print to decorate a restlessness move. If you are leaving the law, this page is not the conversation. If you are leaving for another qualified seat, the analog is still one dated hop.
The Thomson Reuters Institute blog of 20 August 2026 recorded practice-level net spend anticipation of +28 points in regulatory, +14 in labor and employment, and +4 in corporate law, against −8 in insurance, −5 in intellectual property and −5 in disputes. Finance-sector clients printed regulatory at +38 points. A short stint off a contracting disputes or IP desk, with no dated structural fact, is the combination a head of legal is primed to read as restlessness. Regulatory, employment and constrained in-house teams are the seats that still justify a 2026 move — and they still require the sentence.
Do not time a hop to a clock that has been pushed, or that has not yet started. The Companies House presenter-identity measures were revised to no earlier than November 2027. Employment Rights Act 2025 section 25 commences on 1 January 2027; SI 2026/559 was made on 26 May 2026. Browne Jacobson, on 4 June 2026, read the commenced package as a six-month qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal and the removal of the compensatory cap. Moving in mid-2026 “because unfair dismissal is changing” is early. Waiting until 2028 to join an employment desk is late. The playbook year is 2026. The claims year is 2027. Sit through the one you are actually in.
UK Private Capital, in the Report on Investment Activity 2025 published 5 May 2026, recorded £58.7 billion raised by UK-managed funds and £25.0 billion of private-capital investment into UK businesses, down from £31.4 billion in 2024. Sponsor-side corporate seats still have a capital base. They are not a 2020 freeze. They are also not a reason to leave a live financial-services public-M&A seat in month six because the mid-market looks quiet. Match the hop to the desk you are actually on.
Still a storyAlready a pattern
- Story One dated public fact. One move. A sentence a chief legal officer can test against a circular or a statute.
- Used-up hop The fact was real. It has been spent. Sitting is how you stop it becoming a sequel.
- Pattern A second hop, no new date, same PQE band. The next head of legal hears the ending before you start.
- Q1 Can you name one dated public fact without naming people? No → do not start a process. The next general counsel will hear restlessness. Sit.
- Q2 Is this the first qualified hop, not the sequel? No → the first story is used up. A head of legal will not hear it twice.
- Q3 Can you describe the work the way an in-house chair buys it — organization as client, one matter, a generalist overlay? No → you are still talking to a firm hiring committee that is not in the room.
- → All three yes? Explain it once, then stop. That is the window.
If you cannot name the duty or the scale, you are not ready to explain the stint. Sit.
How an associate attorney should say it.
One clause. One date. The organization as the client. Then stop. A chief legal officer does not need your tour of the last desk.
Of 204 general counsel, chief legal officer and heads of legal inside the same cohort, over a 24-month window, 118 said they will hear one dated hop; the remaining 86 treat a second hop in the same PQE band, with no new public fact, as a pattern. That split is the operating instruction. Write the sentence for the 118. Do not write a memoir for the 86.
The SRA in-house thematic review of 14 March 2023 is the register for a short in-house stint that followed a duty clash. If that is your hop, you already have the vocabulary: colleague pressure, compromised obligations, a concern raised. The 18 November 2024 guidance for boards and chief executives says a solicitor should not be disciplined for raising a concern. Use that register. Do not name the people, the employer, or the file.
Name the work the way a general counsel buys it: a scheme, a take-private, a Consumer Duty outcomes paper, an identity-verification program, an employment playbook for the 2027 claims year. Then stop. Hours are not a matter. The firm-to-general-counsel shift is a different job. This page is only the sentence that gets you into that room without the last stint doing the talking.
This is not a resume rewrite. The sibling on CV mistakes owns document hygiene. Resign owns the notice letter. The whether-to-move guide owns the whether. Legal recruiters london desks hear the same short-stint question the company hears; they cannot invent a date you do not have. If the sentence is not ready, do not start. If it is ready, say it once.
| Clock | Pre-admission QWE | Post-admission qualified seat | What a general counsel hears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rule | Two years, up to four organizations, no minimum placement length (SRA, 26 January 2024; COLP, 29 September 2021) | Practicing certificate in force; Solicitors Act 1974 s.1A in an authorized firm | QWE splits are design. Qualified hops need a date. |
| Who confirms it | Solicitor or COLP; per-organization recording, no fee | The next employer, on a CV and in the opening of the interview | They are not a COLP. They are buying a seat. |
| What to say | “The SRA pathway lets QWE sit in up to four organizations.” Then stop. | One dated event. One clause. No people, no brands in the case-study sense. | One sentence. A sequel is a pattern. |
| Who this is for | SQE candidates mixing firm, in-house, clinic, overseas | An associate or counsel on the market after admission | A chief legal officer filling a 2–5 PQE in-house counsel seat |
Questions about explaining a short firm stint
How should an associate attorney explain a short firm stint in London?
Name one dated public event, then stop talking. The SRA qualifying-work-experience rules allow four pre-admission employers; they do not excuse a second hop after admission. A general counsel or chief legal officer is listening for a combination date, a published pay-scale split, or a reporting-line duty — not a tour of every frustration on the last desk. If you cannot name the event without naming people, you are not ready. Sit. The decision guide on whether to move owns the whether; this page owns the sentence you say after you have already left.
Is there a London month-count after which short tenure becomes a pattern?
No public London series publishes one. The usable analog is the NALP Foundation five-year-from-hire window for US and Canadian associate leavers, published 21 April 2026. Use that analog as a cluster, not as a City interview heuristic. A first hop that sits on a 1 May 2024 combination, a 1 July 2026 combination, or a published intra-office scale split is still a story. A second hop with no new public fact is what in-house counsel read as a pattern. Do not invent an 18-month London rule because US literature talks about 18-month books.
Does splitting qualifying work experience across firms count as short tenure?
No. SRA guidance updated 26 January 2024 lets two years of qualifying work experience sit in up to four organizations, and COLP guidance dated 29 September 2021 states there is no minimum placement length. That architecture has been live since the SQE assessments commenced on 1 September 2021. Tell a general counsel it was the designed pathway. The stain clock starts at admission, when a practicing certificate is in force and the next employer is buying a qualified seat.
Will a head of legal care about a Magic Circle pay freeze?
Less than a same-office split. TheCityUK, on 9 December 2025, put more than 8,500 lawyers in the London offices of the world’s top 50 firms. Those platforms now run two published scales in one building. A chief legal officer will hear a printed intra-office gap once. Shopping a third platform in the autumn without sitting the new one is the pattern. Pay is a story when the circular is public. It is not a story every bonus year.
When should I not move, even if the current seat is a poor fit?
Sit when you cannot name a dated event. The National Crime Agency expects a minimum two-year post-qualification stay (GOV.UK, 14 April 2026). Public-body stay-rules are not resignation reasons. On a company process, sit until the sentence is one clause. A clock that has been pushed, or that has not commenced, is not a hop.
How do in-house counsel and a chief legal officer hear a short City stint?
As a generalist credential if you can name the work. The Law Society’s 14 May 2025 in-house guide treats the in-house solicitor as general practice. A corporate seat that produced identity-verification filings or a Consumer Duty board paper is usable. A disputes seat you describe only as hours is not. Name the client as the organization. Never name the people.
