Candidate guide · New York associate interviews
Lateral interviews: how to discuss billables and compensation.
London prices the same question in pounds and PQE. New York prices it in class year, then asks what you actually billed. The candidates who blow the room are the ones who bring the wrong script.
Which room are you actually sitting in?
Sartori's New York mapping covers some 67,000 lawyers. When a New York committee asks about billable hours, it is not asking the London question: it is asking which class year you are, which bonus gate the platform actually runs, and whether you can split billed time from a printed cliff.
Some New York platforms pay the class-year grid with no hours test. Opening with a multiplier year in that room tells the committee you interviewed somewhere else last week. Give billed time. Stop.
The assigned contrast is London versus New York. The in-house general counsel room is the third script, and it is how a chief legal officer will later read the hours you just quoted. The three scripts are laid out below.
- $235,000
- first-year lockstep from 1 July 2026the printed cell a Manhattan-founded firm reset on 2 June 2026, after a freeze at $225,000

Two markets, one question, two scripts.
The opening mistake is to treat hours-and-pay as a personality test. It is a unit-of-account problem. New York counts class year. London counts PQE. An in-house general counsel counts something else again.
Inside that New York interview cohort, 410 associates in years 3 to 6 over a 24-month window told Sartori they had carried a single hours number into both a no-gate room and a gated room. Three in five of those 410 — 61 percent — used the same figure in both. The rooms are not the same product. The candidates who treat them as one product are the ones the committee stops pricing.
Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 census of more than 100 firms on its Firms Most List put average newly qualified salary in London at £118,756, Magic Circle NQ base at £150,000 after the May 2024 step, and 18 U.S. London offices above £170,000. On 5 June 2026, a U.S. litigation platform raised its London NQ cell to £189,000, a day after the New York scale-setters moved. On 21 July 2026, Legal Cheek still had Magic Circle London NQ at £150,000. That is a PQE/NQ script in sterling. It is not a New York class-year answer, and it is not an hours gate.
The London hours object is even less portable. Legal Cheek's 2025–26 trainee and junior survey, published 22 September 2025 from more than 2,000 anonymous respondents, is a self-reported start-to-finish desk day: U.S. London platforms still dominated the long end, with the longest published average at 13 hours and 3 minutes; Magic Circle desk time sat around 10 to 11 hours against that £150,000 NQ cell. Fourteen firms had an average finish of 9:00 p.m. or later. Useful color. Not billed time. Not a New York eligibility cliff. A candidate who answers a New York hours question with a London finish time has changed the object without noticing.
The New York feeder into that class-year room is still the summer class. NALP's 26 January 2026 release on 2025 law-student recruiting put the offer rate from 2L summers to return as entry-level associates at 97 percent and the acceptance rate at 89.4 percent. New York University School of Law's ABA employment summary for 2025 graduates (status 16 March 2026; file dated 27 March 2026) recorded 414 employed, 259 of them in firms of 501 or more lawyers, and 307 employed in New York. That is a lockstep-first pipeline, not an in-house-first pipeline. It is why the hours conversation this page owns is the one most of this class will actually sit.
New York's experienced-hire boards make the unit mismatch visible on the same employer page. An Am Law 5 opportunities list accessed on 9 September 2026 posted New York seats as junior-to-mid capital markets, mid-level M&A, mid-to-senior private funds, finance (including data center and digital infrastructure), financial institutions, IP and technology transactions — class-year language, New York bar. The same page's London column used newly qualified, junior and mid-level under Capital Markets (US Practice), Financial Sponsors and Corporate Restructuring. One employer. Two scripts. The New York interview does not use the SRA pathway; name it only as the credential that room will not ask for.
A third script sits next to both, and a chief legal officer will eventually be on the other side of it. In-house titles on live New York postings in August 2026 ran Senior Associate / Vice President, Counsel at a real-estate owner-operator, and Senior Legal Counsel covering infrastructure and project finance inside a money-center bank's CIB legal team. Those seats instruct panel firms. They do not print a bonus cliff. The associate attorney who is running a firm process and an in-house process in the same month has to keep the general counsel script and the lockstep script in separate files. This page owns the firm-room conversation. The in-house move is adjacent, not the spine.
Firm lockstepIn-house legal function
- New York class year Printed dollar cell, year-end grid, a gate that may not exist. Ask which test. Then quote billed time against that test.
- London NQ / PQE Sterling base, newly qualified or post-qualification experience, desk-day surveys. Leave it in the London file.
- General counsel team Vice president, assistant general counsel, counsel. The hours object is spend and instruction, not a multiplier.
New York class-year room
The unit is class year. Base is a printed lockstep cell. Bonus is a second ladder. Hours are a gate, or they are not — you have to ask which.
London NQ / PQE room
The unit is newly qualified or post-qualification experience. Base is sterling. Desk-time surveys describe the day; they are not a billed-hour cliff.
In-house general counsel room
The unit is the seat: vice president, assistant general counsel, senior legal counsel, counsel. The hours object is panel spend, not a bonus multiplier.
| Room | Unit | What is already public | What the interview still has to price |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York lockstep associate | Class year | Base band on the posting; lockstep cell in the last scale memo | Hours gate (or its absence), year-end, specials, all-in |
| London U.S. practice / Magic Circle | NQ / PQE | Sterling NQ cells in the legal press | Desk-time expectations, bonus practice, U.S. versus Magic Circle unit |
| In-house — general counsel, chief legal officer, head of legal | Seat title and level | Base band on the posting (same transparency statutes) | Panel instruction, legal-spend control, bar versus Part 522 |
The posting prints base. The interview still has to price hours.
The posting already printed associate salary. It did not print hours.
From 1 November 2022 in New York City, and from 17 September 2023 statewide, the range on the advertisement is base. Bonus, hours and all-in are the interview. That is why the compensation conversation still happens in a market that already showed you a number.
The New York City Commission on Human Rights enforces salary transparency in job advertisements under Local Law 32, effective 1 November 2022: employers with four or more employees must state a good-faith minimum and maximum base annual salary or hourly wage on every advertisement for a job, promotion or transfer that can or will be performed in whole or in part in New York City. The range cannot be open-ended. Bonuses, commissions, stock, overtime and benefits are not part of “salary.” A first violation gets a 30-day cure before a civil penalty. The posting you are reading already used that statute. It did not use it to disclose a bonus cliff.
New York Labor Law § 194-b, effective 17 September 2023, overlays the same duty statewide for private employers with four or more employees, including remote roles that report to a New York supervisor, office or work site. The Department of Labor's FAQ uses a large-firm hybrid New York office as the worked example: a promotion that reports to a Boston regional manager but requires two days in the New York office must still carry a range. The posting prints base. The interview still has to price hours. That sentence is the whole of the New York compensation conversation after the statute has done its work.
That is why a 26 May 2026 Am Law 50 New York capital-markets associate posting could print $225,000–$365,000 and require New York bar, and a transatlantic New York M&A posting could print $225,000–$435,000 for J.D. years 2017–2021, and neither posting told you whether year-end sat behind a gate. A 28 August 2026 in-house Counsel posting at a New York real-estate platform printed $280,000–$320,000 for five-plus years and New York bar — a general counsel function, a different hours object, the same transparency statute. The statute does not care whether the buyer is a lockstep firm or a chief legal officer. It cares that base is honest. You still have to do the hours work in the room.
The lockstep the New York room is testing moved on 2 June 2026. A Manhattan-founded firm's memorandum to associates, posted that day, reset eight class-year cells effective 1 July 2026, stepping junior classes by $10,000 and more senior classes by $20,000, to a $455,000 top. Counsel and special associates were carved out — increases determined individually. Legal Business, on 3 June 2026, called it the first associate-pay bump since late 2023. The ABA Journal, on 19 November 2025, had printed the freeze the memo broke: one New York platform would keep 2026 base at $225,000 through $420,000. Mid-2026 interviews had to name which scale applied. Offers dated after 1 July 2026 price the new ladder.
NALP's 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025 and released 28 May 2025, sits below that printed New York scale and measures a different object: office-reported averages, 437 offices, 87 percent from firms of more than 250 lawyers. Overall median first-year base was $200,000; firms of more than 700 lawyers sat at $215,000; $225,000 was the modal first-year figure, reported by 32.0 percent of all offices and 44.7 percent of 701-plus offices. For 701-plus firms the class-year medians ran $215,000 / $225,000 / $250,000 / $291,250 / $315,000 / $340,000 / $360,000 / $375,000. Those cells are not the New York lockstep. Quoting a national median in a New York class-year room is the same error as quoting a London NQ cell: it is a true number for a different product.
Compiled all-in trackers make the next error easy. Biglaw Investor's 2026 table, accessed 9 September 2026, adds printed base plus printed special plus printed year-end and prints $256,000 for a first year through $585,000 for an eighth year if both bonus layers clear. It is arithmetic on published cells. It is not a W-2. It does not net New York City tax. It does not know whether the platform you are sitting in pays specials, or whether you would have cleared their gate. When a committee asks all-in, say the if.
What the statute forced into publicWhat only the interview can price
- Posting Good-faith base range. No bonus. No hours test. This is the number the law already made you look at.
- Hours object Billed, worked, or bonus-eligible. Pick one and name it. This is where the New York script diverges from London and from a general counsel room.
- Year-end A printed class-year cell, sometimes with a special on top, sometimes behind a gate, sometimes with no gate at all.
- All-in A sentence with an if: base, plus year-end if their test would have been cleared, plus specials if their last memo paid them.
Name the gate before you quote a number.
Which gate sits on the billable hours.
The 2025 bonus season split New York into two scripts on the same printed dollars. Some platforms pay the grid with no hours test. Others pay it only after a cliff. You cannot quote a year until you know which room you are in.
Cravath's recruiting FAQ, accessed 9 September 2026, is the clean no-gate primary: the firm does not have minimum hours requirements, and hours are not considered when determining salary or bonuses. Above the Law, on 18 November 2025, reported that New York and D.C. associates at that platform were paid year-end on 12 December with no hours requirement, London a week later. The ABA Journal's 19 November 2025 reprint of the same season is where the printed year-end class-year grid was published. Those dollars are the product. The gate is a separate product. Name the gate before you quote a number.
The gated script sat on the same dollars. The ABA Journal and Above the Law's 2025 bonus tracker recorded named platforms attaching percentage extras, dollar extras, or a stepped ladder to a printed hours cliff, while a parallel list printed “None.” Two scripts. Same class-year cash. Those memos published eligibility cliffs, not a mean year. The New York candidate who quotes a top-cliff year into a None room has answered a question the memo did not ask.
Sartori's New York associate mandate telemetry puts a number on how often that confusion is the live file. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 9 landed at platforms whose last bonus memo ran no hours test. Sartori's quarterly survey since 2019, in the 2025–26 New York waves covering 190 associates inside that cohort, found those 190 expecting a no-gate bonus at the firm they were joining. Nine closed files is not 190 expectations. The gap is the interview. We still have to ask the candidate which memo they think they are walking into. The uncomfortable read is that our own prep does not always catch it before the committee does.
Demand that funds those hours is measured as hours, not as a vibe. The Thomson Reuters Institute, with Georgetown Law, dated 7 January 2026, defined 2025 demand as total hours worked in a 184-firm sample — the third-best demand year since the global financial crisis on their tape — with weekday-adjusted demand averaging 2.5 percent and hitting 4.4 percent in July. Worked rates rose 7.3 percent. Ninety percent of legal dollars still ran through hourly billing. Citi Hildebrandt's 2026 Client Advisory, covering the first nine months of 2025 across 185 firms, recorded equity headcount −0.5 percent and productivity −0.6 percent, with all headcount growth coming from salaried lawyers. Hours grew slower than bodies. That is why a committee still interrogates your year even in a year when rates did the revenue work.
Citi's working hypothesis on Gen AI makes the hours answer more, not less, precise. Gen AI is now the number-one technology priority for large firms in that advisory; 25 percent of large firms expect it to affect lawyer leverage within two years, up from 9 percent a year earlier, and 63 percent within a decade. Through 2027, 86 percent of large firms plan to increase overall associate ranks but only 35 percent plan to increase first-year classes and 37 percent summer classes — a more senior demographic, a cylinder rather than a pyramid. A New York interviewer asking about hours is also asking whether the work is still hour-accretive. Junior candidates should not treat a printed cliff as a forever target if the buyer is shifting leverage up the seat. A general counsel reading the same Citi tape is asking a different question: whether the invoice still has to be hourly at all.
No hours test
Year-end paid on the class-year grid with no hours requirement. Quoting a multiplier year in this room is the error.
Cravath recruiting FAQ, accessed 9 September 2026; Above the Law, 18 November 2025A general counsel is already on the other side of the year you are about to quote.
The hours conversation inside a firm is a preview of the invoice a chief legal officer will later audit. In-house is not the spine of this page. It is the reason the number has to be clean.
Brightflag's 2025 edition of Am Law 100 hourly rates, covering invoices from 1 January to 30 June 2025, put blended billed rates among the Am Law 100 at $1,145, up 8.3 percent. Associate billed rates stepped down the ranking; that tape is what a general counsel, a chief legal officer and a head of legal actually pay. It is not your W-2. It is why an in-house buyer flinches when a lockstep associate treats a bonus cliff as a badge. The badge is their budget.
Thomson Reuters' 2026 report is blunt about who is moving the work. Smaller and midsize firms took the lion's share of 2025 demand growth as clients moved matters off the most expensive platforms; many general counsels face stagnant budgets against higher rates; Am Law 100 standard rates are described as having cracked the $1,000-an-hour mark while everyone else averaged around $600. Citi's same-year advisory says firms expect continued hiring to take share while hours grow slowly. A New York lockstep associate quoting only an Am Law 5 year may be sitting in front of an Am Law 51–200 committee that won the migrated work, or in front of a head of legal who sent it there. The hours script still applies. The rate script does not travel with you.
Of 88 in-house legal leaders inside the same New York interview cohort over an 18-month window — general counsel, chief legal officer and head of legal titles at banks, funds, real-estate platforms and public companies — 53 said they read a firm's hours conversation as a rate-times-hours problem, not as a character test. A general counsel at a New York money-center bank told us they already know what the invoice will look like if they hire the person quoting a multiplier year; what they do not yet know is whether that person can instruct a panel and stop the clock. A chief legal officer at a New York real-estate owner-operator told us they have never asked an incoming in-house lawyer for a bonus-gate year. They ask who the lawyer has already instructed, and whether the New York bar is in hand or whether Part 522 is the actual gate.
The work that still funds New York lockstep hours is not a mystery, and it is not a recruiter's hot list. SIFMA's 2026 Capital Markets Fact Book, posted 13 August 2026, put announced U.S. M&A deal value at $2.6 trillion in 2025, up 58 percent; completed M&A at $1.8 trillion, up 30.7 percent; IPO deal value at $47.0 billion, up 50 percent; corporate bond issuance at $2.2 trillion, up 12.5 percent. The Am Law 5 New York board in September 2026 was posting capital markets, M&A, finance, private funds and financial institutions against that tape. A general counsel at a bank or a fund is the end buyer of those hours. Quote the year as inventory the in-house function will purchase, not as a personal marathon.
Litigation hours have a local docket. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Table C for the year ending 30 September 2025, recorded 11,109 civil cases commenced in the Southern District of New York, up 6.2 percent from 10,462, with 12,493 pending. The Eastern District fell 17.8 percent; the Second Circuit overall fell 2.7 percent. The SEC's FY 2025 results, announced 7 April 2026, counted 456 enforcement actions, including 303 standalone, with headline monetary relief distorted by a 2009 matter; adjusted disgorgement and penalties sat at $1.4 billion and $1.3 billion. From February 2025 the Commission dismissed several prior-administration crypto actions. New York enforcement-defense candidates should not pitch 2022–24 crypto volume as the 2026 pipeline. A head of legal buying that work is buying fraud, market abuse and adviser-fiduciary files, not a story about last cycle.
Citi treated 2025 as a chaos year, not a quiet boom: tariff-delayed deals and executive orders targeting law firms in the first half, then litigation, large-cap M&A, funds, private credit and restructuring in the second. Thomson Reuters described the 2025 demand surge as stemming from chaos — trade wars, regulatory upheaval, geopolitical tension — rather than from economic health. That is the tape a chief legal officer lived inside their own budget. It is also why a New York hours answer that sounds like a boom-year victory lap reads as off-key. Point at the work. Do not point at a vibe.
The junior pipeline behind you changed in January 2025. A presidential hiring freeze dated 20 January 2025 closed the federal civilian vacancy that used to absorb a slice of the class; Reuters reported on 23 January that the Justice Department rescinded Attorney General's Honors Program offers to 3Ls. NALP's Class of 2025 selected findings, as of 16 March 2026, put Honors Program jobs at 50, down from 317, and federal employment excluding clerkships down 37 percent, from nearly 1,100 graduates to about 690. Private practice took 60.9 percent of employed graduates, the highest share since 1990. Business and industry — the in-house-adjacent sector — sat at 6.7 percent, the lowest since 1989, and only 23.7 percent of those business jobs were in-house lawyer functions. More of the class that this page is about is sitting inside firms, where the hours conversation happens. Fewer have a federal or in-house first seat. That is a pipeline fact for 2026 interviews, not a claim that in-house is the destination of this thesis.
Say the object. Then say the number.
Sartori has run New York associate search for more than 10 years. The files that close on time are the ones where the hours answer names billed time, names the gate, and leaves the London script and the in-house script in their own folders.
Of 33 closed New York associate searches over the trailing three years, 19 were years-3-to-6 seats in corporate, funds or litigation. In 11 of those 19, the first compensation conversation stalled because the candidate treated the posting's base range as all-in. In 14 of the 33 closed files, the first hours answer mixed billed time with bonus-eligible time and had to be restated before the committee would discuss year-end. We still closed those files. We spent the extra weeks. That is the finding that does not flatter us: our own New York associate desk still puts restated hours answers in front of committees, and the median 11 working days from offer to acceptance is what you get when the restatement happens before the offer, not after. Sartori maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019; the New York associate line is one city cut of that program, not a second census.
Counter-offers arrived in 12 of those 33 closed files — a 37 percent incidence on this New York associate line. The current employer's counter is often an hours story: stay, and the bonus cliff you already know how to clear will pay. The incoming committee is testing whether you can describe that cliff without making it the reason you are leaving. Completion on the line sat at 94 percent on a typical 6-to-12-week timeline. A messy hours answer is how a 6-week file becomes a 12-week file, not how you raise the number.
The deal sheet still does the matters work; this page does not steal that job. Our deal-sheet guide is what you send so the committee believes you did the deals. The hours conversation is what you say so they believe you can be put on a file this week without a billing-ethics problem. Equity-seat pay questions — guarantees, origination credit, formula years — live on a different page. If you are not being hired onto a lockstep associate seat, you are on the wrong URL.
In New York, the sequence is posting, gate, billed time, year-end, then all-in with an if.
- Open on class year. Not PQE, not a London cell, not a national median. The posting already printed a New York band.
- Ask which test they run. If none, stop. If a cliff, say whether billed time would have cleared it. Do not volunteer a multiplier they do not use.
- Split the objects. Billed last year. Billed year-to-date. Bonus-eligible only if they ask. Worked time is a demand-tape word, not a W-2 word.
- Let a general counsel stay off-stage unless they are in the process. If an in-house buyer joins the call, switch to instruction and spend. Do not run both scripts in one answer.
In London, the sequence is NQ or PQE, sterling base, desk-time as culture, not as a billed-hour cliff.
- Open on PQE or NQ. The New York class-year sentence does not translate. Do not force it.
- Treat desk-day surveys as surveys. A 13-hour average is self-report, not an eligibility memo. Diligence the team's written utilization, not a league table.
- Keep the U.S. scale in the U.S. file. A June 2026 New York step that a London office matched in dollars is still not a class-year answer in a Magic Circle room.
- If a chief legal officer in New York is also live, that is a third file, not a blended file. In-house hours are panel spend.
| When | What to say | What it costs you if you get it wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Before the first call | Read the posting's base band as base. Write down class year, not PQE. Find the last bonus memo, not a rumor. | You walk in already pricing all-in against a statute that forbids the posting from showing it. |
| When they ask what you billed | Give billed time for the last full year and the current year-to-date, then stop. Do not convert it into a bonus story unless they ask. | A single blended number that mixes billed, worked and eligible time is the restatement we keep having to do. |
| When they ask about the gate | Ask which test they run. If they run none, do not volunteer a cliff. If they run one, say whether you would have cleared it on billed time. | Quoting a multiplier year in a no-gate room reads as a candidate who interviewed at the wrong firm last week. |
| When they turn to year-end | Name the printed class-year cell you are comparing, and whether specials are in or out of your head-total. | Specials are a second layer on the year-end grid. Mixing them with base is how all-in gets invented in the room. |
| When a general counsel is in the loop | If the buyer is in-house, switch objects: panel firms you have instructed, matters you can take inside, New York bar or Part 522 status. | A bonus-cliff answer in a chief legal officer room sounds like you still think the product is hours. |
| When London is also live | Keep sterling and PQE in the London file. Keep dollars and class year in the New York file. Do not average them in either room. | A dual-market candidate who blends the scripts fails the New York posting test first. |
| When they ask all-in | Base from the posting, plus the year-end cell if you would have cleared their gate, plus specials only if their last memo paid them. Say the if. | Compiled trackers add the cells as if both bonus layers always clear. The committee knows they do not. |
The no-gate room and the recycled cliff
A years-4 M&A associate at an Am Law 50 New York office opened with a bonus-multiplier year at a platform whose recruiting FAQ states it has no hours test. The committee stopped pricing year-end. We restated billed versus eligible time, closed the file in eight weeks, and did not get a second chance at the first impression.
The dual-city candidate who averaged the scripts
A capital-markets associate running a New York process and a London US-practice process answered the New York class-year question with a PQE band and a sterling cell. The New York committee heard a candidate who had not read the posting. We split the scripts; the New York offer still went out on day 11.
The in-house conversation that is not this page
A funds associate, counsel-eligible, sat a New York lockstep process and a real-estate platform Counsel process in the same month. The general counsel asked who they had instructed, not what they had billed. Mixing the answers would have cost both rooms. We ran two files, two scripts.
Credentials sit under the conversation, and they are not a personality test either. Exam admits still run UBE, NYLE, MPRE, character and fitness, and a three-year filing clock with the Appellate Division. Mid-to-senior movers from a reciprocal U.S. bar run Court of Appeals § 520.10: five of the last seven years actually practiced, an ABA J.D., age over 26, a $400 Board of Law Examiners educational certificate — and practice as counsel to a corporation in the jurisdiction of admission counts toward the five years, which is how an in-house seat can support a later New York admission even though Part 522 registration itself is not admission. Litigation seats add Southern and Eastern District admission under Joint Local Civil Rule 1.3, as amended 2 January 2026. None of that replaces the hours answer. All of it is what a general counsel's head of legal will check if the destination later becomes in-house.
Public-body buyers print a different band and a commitment. The New York City Law Department's experienced-attorney page, accessed 9 September 2026, lists Assistant Corporation Counsel salaries from $87,737–$122,300 at 0–5 post-J.D. years through $180,791–$188,235 at 20-plus, with a two- or three-year commitment depending on experience, and SDNY/EDNY admission as a live gate for federal-court divisions. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District prefers more than two years post-J.D., requires U.S. citizenship and a three-year service commitment, and assigns Criminal or Civil by office need. Those interviews are not lockstep bonus conversations. Do not take this page's firm-room speech into them. Do not take their published band into a New York lockstep room and call it all-in.
If the live process is in-house, the hours object changes and this URL should not be your only brief. A 21 August 2026 money-center bank posting for Senior Legal Counsel, CIB infrastructure and project finance, asked for a New York or other U.S. license and the ability to manage and instruct panel firms and legal spend. That is a general counsel organization hiring the people this market produces, and hiring them with a different script. Keep it adjacent. Do not let it become the spine of a firm-room answer.
Questions associates actually ask before the hours conversation
How do I discuss billable hours in a New York associate interview?
Ask which hours test the platform actually runs before you quote a year; Cravath's 2026 recruiting FAQ states it has none. Some New York rooms still attach a printed bonus cliff; others pay the class-year grid with no hours test at all. Name billed time, bonus-eligible time and worked time as three different objects. Reciting a London desk-day is not an answer to a New York class-year question. The 2026 associate scale is the lockstep the room already knows; the hours answer is whether you have read their memo.
The posting already shows a salary range. Why is compensation still a live question?
New York City Local Law 32, in force since 1 November 2022, requires a good-faith base range and excludes bonus. Statewide Labor Law § 194-b, effective 17 September 2023, does the same for New York-performed and New York-supervised seats. The interview is where hours and year-end get priced. Treat the posting as the floor of base, not as all-in cash.
Can I reuse my London newly-qualified answer in a New York room?
No. London prices newly qualified lawyers in pounds and PQE; New York prices class year in dollars. A PQE answer in a class-year room sounds like you have not read the posting. Desk-time surveys measure start-to-finish office days, not billed-hour eligibility. Sit the two scripts as two scripts; do not average them.
What if I am also interviewing in-house with a general counsel?
An in-house room run by a general counsel or chief legal officer is pricing panel instruction, not a bonus cliff. Part 522 registration authorizes work only for that employer and is not New York bar admission. Do not lead with a multiplier year. Lead with the work you can take inside and the firms you already know how to instruct. The in-house move guide is the destination map; this page is the firm-room hours conversation.
How fast do New York associate offers actually close?
Sartori's New York associate line records a median 11 working days from offer to acceptance. We have run this line for more than 10 years; 33 associate searches closed over the trailing three years, 94 percent of them completed, on a typical 6-to-12-week timeline. Counter-offers arrived on 37 percent of those files. A messy hours answer is how an 11-day window becomes a stall.
Should I volunteer my hours before they ask?
Not as a badge: Court of Appeals § 520.10 already puts a five-of-seven-year clock on the mid-level move. Volunteer a clean split of billed, worked and bonus-eligible time when asked. Do not open with a cliff that is not theirs.
Memos, statutes, demand tapes and the New York admitting rules.
Printed lockstep and bonus cells come from firm memoranda. Hours gates are eligibility cliffs in those memos, not a census of hours billed. Demand is hours worked. London figures are NQ/PQE cells and desk-day surveys. Pay-transparency rules are the reason the posting is not all-in.

There is no published New York-only mean of hours billed, and this guide does not invent one. The 2,000–2,400 figures in 2025 bonus memoranda are eligibility gates. Legal Cheek desk-day lengths are self-reported start-to-finish office days in U.K. seats, not New York billed time. Biglaw Investor all-in cells are printed layers added together, not realized W-2s. NALP office medians as of 1 January 2025 are a different object from the New York lockstep that moved on 1 July 2026. In-house salary bands appear as destination contrast, not as the thesis.
Hours is one conversation. Matters and destination are two others.
Use this page for the New York firm-room hours-and-pay script. Use the deal sheet for the work. Use the in-house guide when a general counsel is the buyer.
The Deal Sheet That Wins the Interview
The matters conversation is a different document. This page prices hours and pay; that one proves you did the work.

Need a clean read on the hours conversation before you walk in?
We prep New York associate interviews as a technical file: which gate the platform actually runs, which script to leave in London, and when a general counsel room needs a different object. Quiet, precise, and just as willing to say wait as to run the process.
