Legal CV mistakes that cost interviews.
A polished legal CV is supposed to convert. The New York paper screen says otherwise — a short list of document errors stops the interview before talent is discussed.
The file dies before the interview.
New York County held 102,325 registered attorneys at year-end 2025, the State Unified Court System Attorney Registration Unit records — a licensed stock, not a conversion rate. For an associate attorney already in practice, the campus employment rate is the wrong thermometer.
Every public in-house buyer in this city checks New York status, and the private general counsel copies the habit. A file that omits jurisdiction, department, or a pending NYLE or MPRE never reaches the matter list. Fix the first line. Then send it.
Pick the error the desk actually stopped on. The short list is unpacked below.

Sartori maps roughly 67,000 lawyers in New York. That coverage is the search surface, not a claim about who is available this month, and it is a different number from the court system’s licensed-population stock.
NALP’s Class of 2025 Selected Findings, dated 5 August 2026, put overall employment at 92.8 percent of graduates with known status as of 16 March 2026. That rate is a ten-month campus census. It is not a mid-level conversion rate, and treating it as proof that CVs convert — or that they do not — is a category error. The 61 percent figure in the byline is the conversion the public tables do not publish: of 412 New York associates on the market inside that interview cohort over 24 months, most never reached a first conversation after the CV was the only document sent.
A polished CV is not a conversion machine.
The public series measure licenses, campus jobs and completed hires. None of them measures the paper screen a general counsel runs before a conversation is booked.
The year-end 2024 table from the same Attorney Registration Unit recorded 100,151 attorneys in New York County. The stock rose by 2,174 between year-end 2024 and year-end 2025. Density is not demand, and it is not an interview.
NALP’s Class of 2025 National Summary Report, tables dated August 2026, records a reported source for 24,833 jobs and finds that 73.5 percent of those offers arrived before graduation. The mid-level associate already in practice is not in that campus slice. That person sits where a head of legal or a firm coordinator applies the CV as the first filter.
We have worked the New York associate market for more than ten years, for company general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at banks, funds, listed issuers and public agencies, and for the firm desks that still hire the same people. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 94 percent completion rate on a typical six-to-twelve-week timeline. Completion is a fact about searches that were allowed to start. It is not a fact about files that died on page one.
Of those 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 8 required a rebuilt shortlist after Sartori’s first CV pass still sent files a general counsel would not interview. That is the cut that does not flatter us. The document errors were visible. We missed them. The second pass caught a missing admission line, a CTA bullet that had not been true since March 2025, or a voice that still read as a firm memo. The search still closed. The first shortlist should never have gone out.
A general counsel at a New York bank legal department, speaking from that same interview cohort over a 24-month window, put the first pass in one line: I stop on the license line before I stop on the deals. The deals, if they matter, are a separate document. The license line is the gate.
Across 750 structured interviews with London lawyers, the same firm-speak-on-an-in-house-desk error appears. New York adds a license-line gate those files do not carry: UBE, NYLE, MPRE, Appellate Division department.
I stop on the license line before I stop on the deals.
Six document errors a head of legal actually stops on.
Formatting is not the list. The list is admission, dating, voice, pay, matter-dump, and a campus-shaped file sent to a mid-level desk.
The first lineThe voice of the seat
- License and status Jurisdiction, admitted or pending, department. Every public in-house buyer in this city checks it. Private general counsel copied the habit.
- Work that is still true A regulatory bullet with a hard stop in 2025, left on a 2026 file, reads as a document nobody updated. The head of legal does not then ask about judgment.
- Company voice Seat, reporting line, what you owned. Origination language and firm-department codes belong to a different reader, and that reader is not the chief legal officer.
Of the 412 New York associates on the market in that 24-month window, 194 named a missing or ambiguous New York admission line as the stop that ended at least one process before a first interview. The line they omitted was not exotic. It was New York, admitted, First Department — or New York, UBE sat, NYLE pending, MPRE 85.
The NYS Board of Law Examiners rules, effective 1 December 2024, set the UBE passing score in New York at 266, the NYLE passing score at 30, and the MPRE passing score at 85, with the MPRE score valid four years and the NYLE passing score valid three. NYLC must be completed before NYLE. Court of Appeals Rule 520.12(d) requires a complete admission application to be filed with the Appellate Division within three years of sitting the second day of the UBE. The 50-hour pro bono rule, adopted 14 September 2012, applies to exam applicants seeking admission after 1 January 2015 and does not apply to admission on motion under Rule 520.10. Out-of-state residents are certified to the Third Department unless employed full-time in New York; Manhattan-resident applicants sit in the First Department. A CV that leaves any of that implied is asking a general counsel to finish the form.
The City of New York Law Department’s own careers pages, accessed in September 2026, make the gate explicit for Assistant Corporation Counsel: ABA-approved J.D.; New York admission or in process; federal-court divisions want Southern District and Eastern District admission or immediate eligibility. Transactional divisions — Economic Development, Contracts and Real Estate, Municipal Finance — generally do not take entry-level attorneys. Experienced-attorney salary bands are published by years after law school. A file that hides class year is hiding the band the office already posted.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, on a page updated 25 July 2025, generally prefers applicants with more than two years of experience following graduation, including a clerkship, a private firm, a non-profit, or another government office. Evaluation names analytical ability and presentation, evidenced by work, academics, and writing samples. A campus-shaped CV sent at year four is a document written for a desk that is not hiring that person.
| Error | Who stops | What the file omitted | Rewrite | Desk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silent admission | General counsel; City Law Department; DFS; New York Fed legal function | Jurisdiction, status, Appellate Division department, pending NYLE or MPRE | New York, admitted, First Department — or the pending scores with dates | In-house / public |
| Expired workflow | Head of legal at a DFS-covered bank or insurer; funds counsel | CTA/BOI as current after 26 March 2025; “upcoming” Part 500 after 1 November 2025 | Current Part 500 MFA and asset-inventory work; drop domestic BOI | In-house |
| Firm-speak | Chief legal officer; VP Legal; company head of legal | Origination credits, firm-department codes, billable-hour display as the lead | Seat, reporting line, what you owned, what you can run | In-house |
| Stale lockstep | Compensation conversation, not the first pass — unless the CV states it | $225,000 described as “market” on a file sent after 1 July 2026 | Do not put a pay floor on the CV; if you must, use the current scale cell | Firm / in-house |
| Deal dump | General counsel and firm coordinator, for opposite reasons | Matter names stuffed into the two-page CV; no separate deal sheet | CV for the seat; deal sheet for the matters | Both |
| Campus shape | SDNY AUSA; experienced City Law Department; mid-level in-house | Journals and clinics as the proof at year four; pending-bar language at year five | The seat you held, the writing you own, the years after law school | Public / in-house |
The first reader is in-house more often than the file admits.
The mid-level associate on the market still writes as if a firm hiring committee is the only desk. The desks that actually bounce the file are a general counsel, a chief legal officer and a head of legal.
Coordinator passOfficer pass
- Head of legal / talent The first human. Checks admission, class year, current employer, and whether the file can be forwarded without apology.
- General counsel Asks whether this person can sit in the meeting the business already booked. A firm memo does not answer that.
- Chief legal officer Asks whether the seat is a cost the board will still fund. Thomson Reuters’ in-house surveys are the climate this pass happens in, not a vacancy census.
Of the 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 19 were company-side seats — in-house counsel, associate general counsel, and equivalent titles reporting to a general counsel or chief legal officer. Of those 19, 12 first-pass CV screens rejected otherwise-credentialed associates primarily on document errors: missing New York admission, a regulatory bullet that had lapsed, or firm-speak the in-house reader would not send to the business. Fourteen searches sat on firm desks. The company-side cut is the one this page is for, because that is where the paper mistakes concentrate.
A general counsel is hiring a colleague, not staffing a department code.
NALP’s Class of 2025 Selected Findings, dated 5 August 2026, put business-sector jobs at 2,180, down 11.9 percent, the lowest share of the class since 1989. In-house lawyers were 23.7 percent of those business job functions; only 34.4 percent of business jobs were bar-admission required. The mid-level associate moving firm-to-company is not competing in a campus in-house machine. The machine is thin. The paper has to do more work.
Thomson Reuters Institute’s 2025 State of the Corporate Law Department, published 25 March 2025 from more than 2,400 corporate general counsel interviews, found that cost control is the top strategic priority for general counsel in the United States. The 2025 Legal Department Operations Index, from a July 2025 survey of 128 U.S. departments, found 55 percent reporting flat or decreasing legal-department budgets, 46 percent expecting more work to be brought in-house, 56 percent reporting the department under-resourced, and 82 percent with at least one dedicated legal-ops role. A CV that cannot show what you will take off the general counsel’s desk, at a budget that is not growing, does not survive that climate.
A head of legal at a New York private-credit platform, in-house to the sponsor, told Sartori the test in one sentence: if the CV still talks like a firm memo, I do not send it to the business. The business never saw the origination-credit line. The head of legal stopped it.
Firm coordinators still hire. They still bounce a file that hides class year.
NALP’s Survey of Law Firms on Lateral and 3L Hiring, press release dated 22 April 2026, recorded a 16.4 percent rise in completed moves at 305 offices reporting both 2024 and 2025, on a sample of 3,535 lawyers. Associates were 58.2 percent of those hires. New York City had the highest city average of associate hires per office. That is completed hires, not applications, and it is why the mid-level paper pile in this city is not a quiet inbox.
The American Lawyer, on 14 April 2025, reported that 18 of the highest-grossing firms in Manhattan generated close to $30 billion of 2024 revenue, with combined full-time-equivalent attorney headcount of 15,646, up 4.8 percent. Practice mix those firms named as 2024 engines — public M&A, private equity, litigation, white-collar, restructuring, private credit, leveraged finance, capital markets — is qualitative, not a vacancy census. It is still the landscape a firm-side CV is read against. The document errors that kill in-house files kill here too: missing admission, a campus-shaped fourth-year, a two-page deal dump with no separate matters list.
If the CV still talks like a firm memo, I do not send it to the business.
2025 rewrote the bullets. 2026 files still carry them.
A regulatory workflow that ended last year is not a demand signal. It is a document error. The freeze, the CTA exemption, Part 500 and the lockstep reset each left a residue on associate paper.
A workflow that closedA desk that is still hiring
- Federal Honors, gone The January 2025 civilian freeze pulled junior federal seats. Displaced 3Ls entered the New York firm pile. Mid-level paper got thicker, not easier.
- Domestic BOI, gone FinCEN exempted U.S. companies from CTA beneficial-ownership reporting in March 2025 and locked the exemption in August 2026. The filing bullet died with it.
- Part 500, live The last cybersecurity transition items were due 1 November 2025. CVs that still list upcoming deadlines are a year late. DFS virtual-currency seats were still posting in September 2026.
The Presidential Memorandum “Hiring Freeze,” dated 20 January 2025, froze filling of vacant federal civilian positions as of noon that day. Extensions on 17 April 2025 and 7 July 2025 kept the vacancy freeze in force through 15 October 2025. Reuters, on 23 January 2025, reported that the Department of Justice rescinded Attorney General’s Honors Program offers to 3Ls that week. NALP then measured the outcome: federal government jobs excluding clerkships fell 37.0 percent, from nearly 1,100 Class of 2024 graduates to about 690 Class of 2025 graduates; Honors Program jobs fell from 317 to 50. Clerkships were not subject to the freeze and fell a milder 8.3 percent, to 3,253. The hiring consequence for this page is not a conversion rate. It is a thicker New York firm CV pile in spring 2025, and a mid-level file that now competes with displaced campus paper.
SIFMA’s 2026 Capital Markets Fact Book, landing 13 August 2026, records announced U.S. M&A deal value of $2.6 trillion in 2025, up 58.0 percent, and U.S. IPO deal value of $47.0 billion, up 50.0 percent. That is deal volume, not a vacancy count. It is why Manhattan corporate, funds and M&A desks still needed mid-level associates while first-year classes were being rationed. A CV aimed at those desks that still leads with domestic CTA filings is answering last year’s question.
The Southern District crypto-registration docket closed as a policy matter in February 2025: the joint stipulation in SEC v. Coinbase, Inc., No. 23 Civ. 4738 (KPF) (S.D.N.Y.), dismissed the complaint with prejudice as to conduct alleged through the stipulation date. White-collar files that still lead with that registration theory are dated. The state desk did not close with it. The New York State Department of Financial Services was still posting Associate Attorney Financial Services, Virtual Currency, in the September 2026 cycle, alongside Senior Attorney and Senior Enforcement Counsel seats in the Civil Investigations Unit. A chief legal officer at a DFS-covered institution is hiring Part 500 and BitLicense fluency, not a closed S.D.N.Y. theory.
The courthouse did not empty. AOUSC Table C for the twelve months ending 30 September 2025 records 11,109 civil cases commenced in the Southern District of New York, up 6.2 percent from 10,462, while the Eastern District fell 17.8 percent to 7,548. The SEC’s FY 2025 enforcement release, dated 7 April 2026, records 456 enforcement actions filed. Federal Honors seats contracted. Federal-court volume in Manhattan did not. A litigation CV aimed at the City Law Department’s Special Federal Litigation division, or at an in-house investigations seat, should show the docket work, not a revoked Honors line.
The New York State Attorney General’s attorney postings page, accessed in September 2026, listed Manhattan seats including Assistant Attorney General, Litigation; Special Assistant Attorney General, Medicaid Fraud Control Unit; Assistant Solicitor General, Appeals and Opinions; and Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Enforcement and Financial Crimes. Applications go through ag.ny.gov. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York Legal Function, headed by the Bank’s general counsel, splits Supervision, Markets, and Financial Services from Enterprise Legal Services, and its two-year Legal Fellowship requires a J.D. with the New York bar completed or pending before start. Those are in-house seats. Their careers pages all ask for a resume. They all bounce a file that cannot state New York status in one line.

NYC Law Department, Experienced Attorneys ↗Write the document the desk can forward.
Two anonymized composites from the New York associate desk, then a one-page rewrite rule a general counsel can actually forward.
First composite. A fourth-year finance associate sent a two-page CV to a New York bank legal department, addressed to the general counsel, in the second half of 2025. The lead bullets were origination-adjacent language from a firm capital-markets group and a current-work line on Corporate Transparency Act beneficial-ownership filings. The head of legal bounced it in the first pass. We rebuilt the file around New York admission (First Department), class year, the seat actually held, and current funds and credit work that was still true after FinCEN’s March 2025 exemption. The deal names moved to a separate sheet. The general counsel took a conversation in week three. The search closed inside the six-to-twelve-week window. The first document was the delay.
Second composite. A litigator applied to the City Law Department’s Special Federal Litigation division as an experienced Assistant Corporation Counsel. The CV omitted Southern District and Eastern District eligibility. The office’s own experienced-attorney page asks for that admission or immediate eligibility on federal-court divisions. The 2023 entry class the office published placed seven lawyers into Special Federal Litigation and thirty-four into Tort; transactional divisions took nobody at entry. We put SDNY and EDNY eligibility on line one under New York, admitted, First Department, and moved clinic work to a line the campus still earned. The interview was scheduled. The omission was the only reason the first version never left the coordinator.
A chief legal officer at a listed New York issuer, in the same 24-month testimony window, described a privacy-counsel file that still listed “upcoming Part 500 deadlines” in 2026. The head of legal did not send it on. Implementation of multi-factor authentication and asset inventory was the work. The deadline had passed on 1 November 2025. That is the unglamorous version of a CV mistake that costs interviews: not a typo, a date.
Once a file clears paper, the offer clock on this desk is short. Sartori’s New York associate mandate telemetry records a median 11 working days from offer to acceptance on the 33 closed searches, and a 37 percent counter-offer incidence on those same files. Neither figure helps a CV that never produced a first conversation. They describe what happens after a general counsel has already decided the document can be forwarded.
The rewrite rule fits on one page. Line one: New York admission, status, department. Line two: class year and current seat, with the reporting line if you are already in-house. Lines three to eight: current work that is still true in 2026, written so a chief legal officer can send the file to the business without translating origination language. Matters live on the deal sheet. Pay stays off the CV. If the desk is the City Law Department, the Attorney General, DFS, the New York Fed legal function, or an SDNY AUSA hiring official, copy the gate the employer already posted — years after law school, federal-court admission, New York bar pending — instead of inventing a campus narrative those pages do not ask for.
Mid-Atlantic jobs were 21.9 percent of the Class of 2025, NALP’s Selected Findings record, with a regional median full-time long-term salary of $115,000. That median is a graduate census, not an in-house band and not the lockstep. It is here as a reminder that “New York market” on a CV is doing too much work. Name the desk. Name the license. Name the work that is still true. The interview is the second screen. The CV is the first, and it is the one most otherwise-hireable associates in our on-market cut never survived.
| Element | Campus / OCI file | Mid-level firm file | File for a general counsel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proof | Class year, journals, summer seats | Matters, hours shape, department | Seat, reporting line, what you owned |
| License | Pending bar is expected | Admitted, department, any pending NYLE/MPRE | Admitted; federal-court eligibility if the desk litigates |
| Voice | Academic | Firm | Company — a chief legal officer must be able to forward it |
| Matters | Fold into the CV if the sheet is thin | Separate deal sheet | Separate sheet, rewritten for business impact, not mechanics |
| Pay | Off the document | Off the document; do not quote last year’s lockstep as market | Off the document; municipal and in-house bands are not the lockstep |
Legal CV mistakes that cost interviews: questions New York associates actually ask
Which legal CV mistakes cost an associate attorney interviews in New York?
In Sartori’s New York read, 61 percent of 412 on-market associates never reached a first interview after sending only a CV. The stops that actually kill the file are a missing or ambiguous New York admission line, a regulatory bullet that is no longer true, and firm-speak a general counsel will not send to the business. Representative matters belong on a deal sheet, not dumped into the two-page CV. Public tables do not publish this conversion: NALP’s Class of 2025 92.8 percent employment rate, released 5 August 2026, measures ten-month campus placement, not the mid-level paper screen.
Does a polished legal CV guarantee a first interview?
No. A polished file still dies on the license line, a dated regulatory bullet, and voice a chief legal officer will not forward. Sartori has worked the New York associate desk for more than ten years and closed 33 associate searches over three years at a 94 percent completion rate; polish was never the scarce ingredient on those files. The scarce ingredient was a document a general counsel, head of legal, or firm coordinator could send onward without annotating the first page.
What must a New York CV say about bar admission?
State the jurisdiction, the status, and the Appellate Division department if you have one: New York, admitted, First Department, is a complete line. The NYS Board of Law Examiners rules effective 1 December 2024 set a UBE passing score of 266, a NYLE passing score of 30, and an MPRE passing score of 85. Court of Appeals Rule 520.12(d) requires the admission application to be filed with the Appellate Division within three years of sitting the second day of the UBE. Every public buyer in this article — the City Law Department, the Attorney General, DFS, the New York Fed legal function, SDNY AUSA — checks that gate before talent.
Should my CV still list $225,000 as New York market pay?
Not after 1 July 2026 if you are talking about the scale-firm lockstep. NALP’s 28 May 2025 salary survey put the New York City first-year median at $225,000 as of 1 January 2025; Above the Law’s 2026 scorecard records the 2 June 2026 reset to a $235,000 first-year cell, presumed effective 1 July 2026. Listing the old floor as “market” on a file sent after that date is a dating error. In-house and municipal bands were never that lockstep: the City Law Department’s experienced-attorney range for zero to five years after law school is $87,737–$122,300 on the employer’s own careers page.
Do in-house general counsel read a different CV than a law firm?
Yes. A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal reads a business document: seat, reporting line, what you owned, what you can run without a team. Thomson Reuters Institute’s 2025 Legal Department Operations Index, from a July 2025 survey of 128 U.S. departments, found 46 percent expect more work to be brought in-house while 55 percent report flat or falling legal-department budgets. A CV that still talks in origination credits and firm-department codes wastes that reader’s first screen. The firm coordinator still wants class year, hours shape and matter proof — on a deal sheet, not as a second CV.
How long does a New York associate search take once the paper clears?
Sartori’s New York associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, with a median 11 working days from offer to acceptance on the 33 closed searches. That clock starts after a general counsel or head of legal is willing to interview. A file that dies on paper never starts it.
Bar rules, NALP tables, employer careers pages, and Sartori's New York research.
Licensed-population stock, campus employment, completed hires, and in-house budget surveys are different instruments. The paper-screen conversion sits in Sartori's New York interview cohort, because no public table publishes it.
Sartori & Partners maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The New York State Unified Court System counts registered attorneys by county of business address, or residence if there is no business address. NALP’s Class of 2025 employment rate counts ten-month outcomes for new J.D.s. NALP’s hiring survey counts completed moves at participating offices. Thomson Reuters Institute surveys general counsel and legal-department operations. Employer careers pages — the City Law Department, the Attorney General, DFS, the New York Fed, SDNY AUSA — state the gates those desks actually post. Sartori’s New York associate mandate telemetry counts closed searches. None of those series is a substitute for another.
