Mid-level associates: the best window for moving firm.

NALP's May 2026 cut of 2025 U.S. laterals still has associates as most of the tape. The class-year rule that follows, in London, is years 3-5 -- after which the same move firm reads as a stalled track.

Is this class year still portable — or already a stalled track?

Pick the year you are actually in. NALP still shows associates as most of the 2025 tape. It does not tell you which class year a London general counsel or a receiving chair will still underwrite.

Class year · Years 3–5 The last year a receiving desk still prices as mid-level

Owned workstreams, a closed deal sheet, a practicing certificate. This is the window a general counsel filling in-house legal counsel, and a City chair filling a mid-senior seat, will still underwrite. Move in the window — or name why you are waiting.

The decoder is a class-year read, not a census. NALP still has associates as most of the tape. It does not cut class year.

What the 2025 tape still says about an associate attorney

NALP's May 2026 Bulletin+ cut of calendar-year 2025 U.S. laterals is the dated mix. Associates remain most of it. Class year is not in the table.

Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. The dated tape we open on is not a London census. It is NALP’s May 2026 Bulletin+ cut of calendar-year 2025 laterals at 305 U.S. offices that reported both 2024 and 2025: 3,535 laterals in all, up 16.4% year on year, with associate volume up 17.1%. Associates were most of that tape. NALP also split out other laterals (staff attorneys and counsel) at 689, up 13.0%. Growth in 2025 was almost evenly split between the associate column and the rest of the mix, unlike 2024, when growth was disproportionately associate-driven. NALP still has associates as most of the 2025 tape. It does not tell you which class year a London desk will still underwrite. The historical series on the same table is a reminder that mix is not destiny: 2024 volume was up 13.9% (average laterals per office 9.9); 2023 was down 35.0%; 2022 down 11.5%; 2021 up 110.9%. About 46.9% of offices had a 16% or larger increase in 2025; about 53% had smaller gains or declines.

That is the opening angle, and it has a hard limit. NALP does not cut laterals by class year or PQE. The 2025 article reports firm-size bands, region, remote-hire policy (52.1% of offices allow fully remote laterals; 42% allow fully remote associate laterals), post-clerkship hires (209 direct-to-clerkship, up 17.2%) and 3L recruiting (21.8% of 316 offices). None of those cells is years 3–5. Anyone who writes “NALP shows years 3–5 as most of the tape” is inventing a table the survey does not publish. The class-year rule that makes years 3–5 the portable window to move firm is a London screen, developed below from the same interview cohort already cited and from associate-line mandate telemetry. It is not a NALP finding.

The London desks that actually hire that class year are countable on a different instrument. Pirical’s 11 June 2025 snapshot of The Lawyer UK 100 universe put 56% of those lawyers in London. Primary-practice headcount in the capital: Corporate 3,059 (up 27% since 2022), Real Estate 3,047 (up 14%), Dispute Resolution & Litigation 2,438 (up 17%), Banking & Finance 1,992, Employment 1,367. Those are stock figures, not vacancies. They tell a mid level associate which benches still have the depth to absorb a year-4 hire. Pirical’s London leaderboard for July 2025–July 2026, published 25 August 2026, adds the client texture behind the corporate and finance seats: private-equity and investment names dominate the top-ten public-matter relationships at the top-ranked London firms.

The profession around those desks is larger than the UK 100. TheCityUK’s 2025 report, ONS-based, put UK legal-services GVA at £38 billion in 2024 (1.5% of UK GVA, up 3.3% year on year) and legal-activities revenue at £52.3 billion. UK-wide legal-services employment was 364,000 in 2023. All of the world’s top-50 firms have London offices employing more than 8,500 lawyers; more than 200 foreign firms from about 40 jurisdictions sit in the City. The SRA counted 8,917 recognized firms in July 2026. Authorization year 2023/24, published 2 February 2026, recorded 9,601 individuals admitted. The summer 2025 firm-diversity census, published 11 March 2026, found 30% of lawyers aged 25–34 — the band that contains most NQ-to-mid PQE — and 63% of solicitors women against 35% of full-equity seats.

In-house is visible in that stock, and it is not the class-year window. The Law Society Annual statistics report 2023 (page dated 23 January 2025) put private-practice share of practicing-certificate holders at 59%, down from 69% in 2014, and in-house at 35,738 people, 22% of PC holders as of July 2023. The same body’s 18 December 2025 career-options page puts in-house at 26% of the profession. TheCityUK’s 2025 key findings use 25%. Those are four clocks, not one rate. A general counsel, a chief legal officer and a head of legal sit on the company side of that stock. They hire the portable class year as in house counsel. They do not rewrite the years 3–5 screen.

Why a mid level associate still reads as portable

We have worked the London associate market for more than 10 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches, 94 percent of them completed, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. The class-year rule is what that telemetry, and the same interview cohort, actually says.

Of 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 21 were years 3–5 seats — corporate, private funds, disputes or employment — at Magic Circle, Silver Circle / large UK international, or US-London desks. Four were NQ-to-year-2 files. Eight were year-6 or year-7 files. Completions: all 21 of the years 3–5 files, all four of the junior files, and six of the eight year-6 or year-7 files. The two files that did not complete both sat in that year-6 or year-7 band. In both, the incumbent matched lockstep cash and the receiving chair then priced the candidate as a stalled senior. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: past the window, we do not always finish.

Median time-to-fill inside the 21 years 3–5 files was 8 weeks, inside the 6-to-12-week envelope. The year-6 and year-7 files ran to the long end of that envelope. Median offer-to-acceptance across the 33 was 12 working days. Counter-offer incidence on the London associate line is 35 percent: 12 of those 33 closed files attracted a stay-put counter. Seven of the 12 sat in the years 3–5 band; five sat in year 6 or 7. The later class year does not attract fewer counters. It attracts more, because the incumbent can match and the receiving read has already softened.

The same London cohort, read over a 24-month window, is where the class-year rule was named rather than inferred from mandate outcomes. Of 196 respondents sitting as years 3–5 associates at Magic Circle, Silver Circle or US-London desks, 139 named years 3–5 as the last class year a receiving firm would still underwrite as portable. Years 3–5 is the last class year a receiving firm will still underwrite as portable. Of 88 respondents in that cohort sitting as general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal at commerce-and-industry employers over the same 24 months, 51 said they will hire a year-3 to year-5 City associate as in-house legal counsel and will not hire a year-7 who has never owned a disclosure announcement or a coverage dispute. A general counsel at a UK-listed industrial, from that second cut, put it without ornament: they will take the year-4 corporate associate off a Magic Circle desk, and they will not relabel a year-7 as mid-level. A head of legal at a PE-backed software company said the same thing from the other side of the org chart: years 3–5 still need a practicing certificate and a live deal sheet, not a general counsel title they have not earned.

New York’s interview cohort is 1,675 structured interviews. This page reads London. What the telemetry cannot see is class-year mix at City firms we did not search. Quarterly survey waves since 2019 are the instrument that keeps the global framing stable — nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally — not a second London interview count. Candidates who search legal recruiters london usually call once they can name a class year and a live deal that has closed. Call earlier than year 3 and the receiving chair, or the in-house general counsel on a company brief, will underwrite training. Call at year 7 without a ticket and they will underwrite a stay.

01

Years 1–2 still read as restless

A receiving firm, and a general counsel filling an in-house legal counsel seat, will underwrite training. They will not underwrite a class-year move. The NQ conversion is a different market.

02

Years 3–5 still read as portable

This is the last class year a Magic Circle, US-London or in-house desk will still price as mid-level. Owned workstreams, a closed deal sheet, a practicing certificate. Not a stalled senior.

03

Year 6–7 without a ticket reads as stalled

Unless the sheet names Takeover Code, NSIA, coverage disputes or Employment Rights Act implementation, the same move firm is priced as a senior who missed the window.

04

In-house is a different clock

A chief legal officer hiring legal counsel wants a year-4 City lawyer who can sit next to the business. That is not the firm-to-firm window. It is a destination with its own age mix and its own title stack.

Years 3–5 is the last class year a receiving firm will still underwrite as portable.
On waiting
04 Platforms

The same class year, three operating systems.

Magic Circle newly-qualified bases, US-London locksteps at 3–5 PQE, and in-house legal counsel reporting to a general counsel are three different products. The portable year is the same. The contract is not.

Freshfields moved its London newly-qualified base from £125,000 to £150,000 on 1 May 2024. Linklaters and Clifford Chance matched the same spring. As of Clifford Chance’s autumn 2026 retention round — 37 of 45 qualifying trainees kept (82%), all 45 applied, about 100 trainees a year on the Firms Most List 2027 — that newly-qualified base is still £150,000. Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 NQ table put the average across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits at £118,756, and counted 18 US London outfits paying newly-qualifieds more than £170,000. Macfarlanes and Baker McKenzie both reached £150,000 from July 2026. DLA Piper London moved to £140,000 the same month, with regional newly-qualified bases at £84,000. Some City firms froze newly-qualified raises in 2025 to stop bunching against the class above them. No firm announcement carried a Magic Circle 3–5 PQE lockstep.

The published 3–5 PQE scales that were found sit on US-London letterhead. Quinn Emanuel, effective 1 July 2026, pays £189,000 newly qualified, £273,000 at 3 PQE, £289,000 at 4 PQE and £305,000 at 5 PQE. The Global Legal Post, covering the same move, recorded that this sterling scale sat above Milbank’s then-current dollar lockstep (first-year $235,000 to eighth-year $455,000) at every comparable level, particularly at mid-level, at then-current FX. Katten the same day: £135,000 newly qualified, then £170,000 / £180,000 / £190,000 at 3 / 4 / 5 PQE. Non-Billable, 8 June 2026, put Hogan Lovells London newly-qualifieds at £140,000 against Cadwalader London first-years around £170,000 after the Hogan/Cadwalader combination. Quinn Emanuel does not run a UK training contract. The mid-level window is how those desks fill.

Public role titles make the same point without a salary. A Magic Circle London careers page for a mid-senior private-funds associate described the desk as eight partners, three counsel, thirty associates and eight trainees, hybrid at a 50% office minimum, expired when accessed in September 2026. A mid-senior insurance-litigation associate on the same careers site sat in a London disputes group of about 30 partners and 100 associates, asking for coverage experience at a top-rank practice and client relationships “at the same level of PQE.” A US disputes boutique’s London Workday posting dated 26 August 2026 asked for 4–6 PQE, England and Wales admission, and three days a week in the office. Solomonic data via Legal Cheek on 28 May 2026 put US firms at about 4% of London litigation by volume but a median claim value of £10 million against an all-firm average of £740,000, with a Commercial Court footprint near one in five recent claims. Those desks absorb the portable class year. They do not absorb a stalled senior at year 7 without a ticket.

Company payroll is the third operating system, not the thesis. The Law Society in-house ethics framework (14 May 2025) sets the title stack a candidate will actually meet: general counsel typically the most senior; some organizations use legal director or chief legal officer; head of legal often reports to the general counsel and is more operational; other team solicitors sit as legal adviser or legal counsel. LexisNexis, 15 January 2025, reported that 77% of in-house teams are aged 31–50 and 5% are under 30; that only 4% of law-firm legal associates plan to move in-house within five years; and that 75% plan to stay in private practice. Law Society figures for July 2019–July 2020 put 8.4% of 5,626 training positions in-house. A Government Legal Profession Grade 7 “Lawyer” seat is advertised around £60,000 at about 3 or more years’ PQE, with typical postings of 3–4 years — a public-law clock, not a City lockstep. In-house legal counsel is a destination a year-4 City lawyer can still make. It is not a reason to wait until year 7 and then relabel the stall as a company move.

01

UK lockstep desks

Magic Circle newly-qualified bases still sit at £150,000 as of September 2026. Silver Circle and large internationals cluster from DLA Piper London at £140,000 to Macfarlanes and Baker McKenzie at £150,000 from July 2026.

02

US-London scales

Quinn Emanuel’s published London lockstep from 1 July 2026 reaches £273,000 at 3 PQE and £305,000 at 5 PQE. Katten’s same-day scale is £170,000–£190,000 at 3–5 PQE. These firms hire the portable class year; some do not run a UK training contract.

03

Company payroll

General counsel, chief legal officer and head of legal seats hire the same class year as in-house legal counsel. The Law Society’s 18 December 2025 career-options page puts in-house at 26% of the profession. That is a destination, not the class-year window.

Published London bases that time a years 3–5 move. Newly-qualified figures are the UK lockstep marker; 3–5 PQE figures are the US-London scales that were actually. Magic Circle mid-PQE is omitted because no firm announcement carried it.

05 Clocks

Deal intensity, a practicing certificate, and the 2027 cliffs.

The London mid-level window is timed by deal and disputes intensity plus platform pay, not by a single statute. The statutes still decide which tickets a year-4 sheet needs to carry.

Public M&A still runs on the Takeover Code. Jurisdiction reset on 3 February 2025; a two-year transition to 2 February 2027 keeps certain former UK-resident names on the Code. Dual-class, IPO and buyback amendments, including Trigger Events treated as Rule 9 acquisitions of voting rights, came into force on 4 February 2026. Anyone whose narrative is “I do Code private-company offers” should time that story before the 2027 cliff. The UK Listing Rules overhaul of 29 July 2024 (FCA PS24/6) dropped shareholder approval for most significant transactions and related-party deals, replacing circular and vote mechanics with disclosure and MAR judgment. Mid-PQE who have run class-test announcements are the portable cohort on listed-company M&A; IPO ECM remains quieter while London listings stay thin.

Utilization behind those tickets is a cycle, not a statute. A&O Shearman’s 8 July 2026 Global M&A Insights put UK H1 2026 deal value at USD 237 billion across 1,303 deals, with inbound USD 202 billion — the highest half-year since H2 2021. City AM, citing PwC, put takeovers at £124 billion in H1 2026 (up 107% on £60 billion in H1 2025) despite a deal count of 1,301. LSEG via City AM, as of 1 September, put announced acquisitions of UK-listed publics at $132.5 billion year to date against $48.2 billion in the prior-year period. Fewer, larger public deals concentrate mid-level corporate and financing associates on mega-process — diligence ownership, Code drafts, NSIA filings — rather than junior volume. Move after close.

Failure to prevent fraud (ECCTA s.199) went live on 1 September 2025 for large organizations. That pulls investigations and compliance associates onto firm white-collar desks and onto in-house legal counsel seats reporting to a general counsel or chief legal officer at large FS and corporate employers. The Employment Rights Act 2025 is phasing through 2026, with unfair-dismissal reform on 1 January 2027 (qualifying period to 6 months; uncapped compensatory awards for effective dates of termination on or after that day, SI 2026/559). Employment associates at 3–5 PQE are in a multi-year implementation market; in-house employment counsel at corporates is a parallel destination. FCA Consumer Duty remains in force; CP26/23 (open 29 June to 18 September 2026) is a scope and proportionality consult with rules expected in Q1 2027, not a repeal. SM&CR Phase 1 (PS26/6) landed most changes on 24 April 2026. NSIA’s 17 notifiable sectors remain in force until secondary legislation later in 2026; the Cabinet Office response of 12 March 2026 is not a 19-sector map you can write onto a CV today.

Court of Appeal in CILEX v Mazur [2026] EWCA Civ 369 (31 March 2026) restored supervised delegation of litigation tasks after a High Court shock that had some firms pulling files. The hiring consequence is the opposite of a freeze: disputes leverage (trainees, paralegals) is lawful again, which raises the bar on what a mid-level solicitor must own — supervision, reserved steps, advocacy. Credential gates sit underneath every platform. SQE-route candidates need two years’ qualifying work experience; qualified lawyers are exempt from QWE. The Law Society’s 28 January 2025 international guide put SQE1 plus SQE2 assessment fees at £3,980. An individual SQE2 exemption is £265, decision within 180 days (SRA, updated 6 August 2026); the United States is not an agreed-jurisdiction exemption. The SRA counted 7,674 registered foreign lawyers in July 2026. RFL status lets a foreign-qualified lawyer advise; it does not, without solicitor admission, let them conduct reserved English public M&A or litigation. A mid-level US associate on those desks needs admission, not RFL-only status.

06 How to time it

Open the process in the window. Close the deal first.

Three anonymized composites from the London associate line, then a watchpoint list. No lawyer, firm or candidate names. Numbers sit inside the 33-file envelope.

A year-4 corporate associate on a Magic Circle public-M&A desk waited until a scheme became unconditional, then opened a process toward a US-London funds and sponsor seat. Time-to-fill was 8 weeks. The incumbent tabled a stay-put counter; the candidate signed on working day 12, matching the London associate-line median. The receiving chair underwrote a portable mid-level. A general counsel at the offeree company never saw a resume circulating inside the offer period. That file is one of the 21 years 3–5 searches. It is what the window looks like when it works.

A year-7 insurance-coverage associate asked to move firm without a named ticket beyond “disputes.” The receiving chair priced a stalled senior. The incumbent matched cash. The file is one of the two year-6 or year-7 searches that did not complete. The lesson is not that disputes movers are unhireable — the US-London 4–6 PQE posting, and the Magic Circle mid-senior coverage seat, show the opposite. The lesson is that year 7 without a ticket is not year 4 with more hours.

A year-5 finance associate took in-house legal counsel at a large UK financial-services employer after failure-to-prevent-fraud procedures went live, reporting to a head of legal who reported to the chief legal officer. That is a destination file, not a firm-to-firm completion, and it is not counted inside the 33. The class year was still portable. The operating system was a company payroll. Candidates who want that destination should read the firm-to-general-counsel guide rather than wait for a general counsel title they will not be offered at year 5.

For a firm-to-firm move, years 3–5 is the underwrite window. After that, name a ticket or stay.

  • Name the class year. A receiving chair still prices years 3–5 as mid-level. Year 7 without Takeover Code, NSIA or coverage is a stalled track.
  • Close the deal first. Public M&A and inbound take-privates are utilization. A mid-offer resume is a leak the next general counsel will remember.
  • Pick an operating system. UK lockstep, US-London scale, or a specialist disputes boutique that does not run a training contract. Diligence hours and title, not only the base.
  • Decide the counter before it arrives. Thirty-five percent of London associate-line files attracted one. The later class year attracts more, not fewer.

For a company payroll, the same class year is portable — and almost no one in the associate population is planning the move.

  • Read the title stack. General counsel at the top; chief legal officer in some organizations; head of legal often operational and reporting up; you are being hired as legal counsel.
  • Respect the age mix. A year-4 City lawyer is the hire a general counsel can still underwrite as in-house legal counsel.
  • Do not wait for a GC title. Forty percent of in-house solicitors find becoming general counsel attractive (LexisNexis, 15 January 2025). Attractive is not the offer at year 5.
  • Keep the practicing certificate. In-house solicitors remain SRA-regulated. A company seat is not a way around reserved-activity rules if you later want English litigation or public M&A on a firm letterhead.
Sortable — class-year watchpoints from year 2 through year 7. Each row is an operating test of whether a receiving chair, a general counsel or a head of legal will still price you as portable.
When What should be true Red flag Who prices it
Year 2 A live seat, not a shopping process during the training contract or NQ year Approaches that read as restless to a receiving chair and to any general counsel who later sees the CV You, with your current supervising lawyer
Year 3 First owned workstream; a practicing certificate; a deal or dispute you can narrate without a supervisor in the room Still only shadowing; no named matter on a sheet a head of legal would recognize You
Year 4 A closed deal or a coverage file on the sheet; process opened after close, not mid-offer A resume circulating while an offer period is live You and the receiving desk
Year 5 Last clean portable year; equity-track rumour priced as a rumour, not as a reason to wait Waiting for a promotion that has no date You
Year 6 A named ticket — Takeover Code, NSIA, insurance coverage, Employment Rights Act implementation A generic senior asking to move firm with no ticket Receiving chair / general counsel
Year 7+ In-house legal counsel, a specialist disputes seat, or an honest stay The same move firm now priced as a stalled track Chief legal officer / head of legal, if the destination is a company
Diligence before the process opens. Weighting only shifts where the question bites hardest — firm-to-firm versus a company destination.

When is the best window for an associate attorney to move firm?

Years 3–5. After year 6 the same move firm reads as a stalled track, not a promotion. NALP’s May 2026 Bulletin+ cut of calendar-year 2025 U.S. laterals still has associates as most of the tape, and it publishes no class-year table — the years 3–5 screen is the one London general counsel, chief legal officer and head of legal seats still underwrite. Should-you-move is a different question; our decision guide owns that.

Does NALP break the 2025 tape out by class year?

No. NALP’s May 2026 Bulletin+ cut of 2025 has no class-year table. It reports 2,059 associates of 3,535 laterals at 305 U.S. offices that filed both years, with associate volume up 17.1%. That is a mix, not a PQE timetable, and it is a U.S. office sample — not a London census. Treat it as the dated tape, then apply the London class-year rule separately.

How wide is the London pay spread at 3–5 PQE?

On published locksteps, Quinn Emanuel pays £273,000 at 3 PQE from 1 July 2026. Katten’s London scale the same day sits at £170,000 / £180,000 / £190,000 at 3 / 4 / 5 PQE. Magic Circle newly-qualified bases remain £150,000 as of Clifford Chance’s September 2026 retention round; no announcement carried a Magic Circle mid-PQE band. The cash map is in our UK-lockstep to US-firm guide.

Do I need the SQE to take an English reserved seat?

If you are already an England and Wales solicitor with a practicing certificate, no. A U.S.-qualified lawyer who will sign reserved English work still needs SQE1 and SQE2 or an exemption: the Law Society’s January 2025 international guide put assessment fees at £3,980, and an individual SQE2 exemption carries a £265 fee with a decision inside 180 days (SRA, updated 6 August 2026). Registered-foreign-lawyer status is not a substitute for reserved public M&A or litigation.

Should I wait until a live deal closes?

Yes. Time the move after close, not mid-offer. The Takeover Panel recorded 57 firm offers and about £43 billion in the year to 31 March 2025; LexisNexis Market Standards counted 56 firm offers and £40.5 billion in calendar 2025. A mid-offer resume reads as a leak risk to the general counsel on the other side of the table, and to your own head of legal if you sit seconded inside the client.

Is in-house the same window as moving firm?

No. LexisNexis reported in January 2025 that only 4% of firm associates plan an in-house move within five years. Seventy-five percent planned to stay in private practice. In-house is a destination clock — general counsel, chief legal officer and head of legal titles on a company payroll — not the class-year window. Our firm-to-general-counsel guide is that destination.

07 What this guide draws on

NALP's 2025 tape, SRA stock, City pay announcements, and the Takeover Panel clocks.

The associate-majority mix is NALP May 2026. London desk stock is Pirical. Pay figures are dated firm announcements via Legal Cheek and The Global Legal Post. The class-year rule is Sartori London research, not a NALP cell.

NALP measures reported laterals at a fluctuating pool of U.S. offices, not London and not class year. SRA monthly tables measure regulated population and firm entities, not associate job titles. Pirical UK 100 figures are publicly tracked lawyer counts, not vacancies. TheCityUK 2025 employment map uses Figure 3 (128,000 London jobs); a key-findings bullet on the same report lists 133,000. In-house share of the profession is cited on its own clock: 22% (Law Society ASR, July 2023), 25% (TheCityUK 2025), 26% (Law Society career-options page, 18 December 2025). Magic Circle 3–5 PQE bases were not on any firm announcement and are omitted. Named firms appear as cited market facts; case studies are anonymized composites.

For associates, and for the desks that hire them

Need a candid read on whether this class year is still portable?

We time London associate moves against the years 3–5 window — and we will say wait when year 7 without a ticket is a stalled track. Quiet, evidence-led, and just as willing to send you back to the deal as to open a process.
