Law Firm Mergers 2026: the close dates, and the talent each one moves.

A general counsel does not re-underwrite a panel on announcement day. The conflicts wall, the pay scale and the local relationship partner move on the close date. This is the 2026 list — who still earns on the combined letterhead, and who a company can still instruct.

The close date is the hiring event.

New York's 1 July 2026 Hogan Lovells Cadwalader close is the largest of the 2026 law firm mergers a general counsel still has to re-underwrite this year. Sartori maps about 67,000 lawyers in New York. Coverage is not the constraint. The close date is. Three platforms went live between 1 June and 1 July, and each one moved a conflicts wall, a pay scale, or a local relationship partner.

Lens 01 · 1 July 1 July is when New York becomes the fifth engine.

Legal Business, on 2 July 2026, put the combined office count above 36 and the stated revenue just ahead of the 2024 A&O Shearman launch book of $3.5bn. New York is named the fifth growth engine. The plaintiff-side trial book had already walked in February. Largest close. The trial desk left first.

The opening question is the buyer’s: after this close, who can the company still instruct, and who can it still put on the payroll? The dated list is below.

Fairfax Associates compiles a completed-merger census of U.S.-connected combinations where the acquired firm has at least five lawyers; it also advises on some of the deals it counts. The figures above are that census and the Citi flash sample, not a regulator series. Live combination headcount comes from the firm’s own close-day release.

Fairfax Associates, in its 1 July 2026 note, counted 7 completed U.S.-connected combinations in Q2. Q1 had already produced 31 closes against 28 a year earlier, with the mid-size band (smaller firm 20 to 100 lawyers) at 8 versus 1. The 5 January 2026 year-end note put full-year 2025 at 59 completed combinations, up 18 percent from 50 in 2024, the first year since 2020 with seven combinations where both sides had at least 100 lawyers, and a small-firm share (one side 5 to 20 lawyers) of 76 percent against 69 percent the prior two years. Cross-border combinations were 10 in 2025 against 3 in 2024; the 2026 transatlantic platforms are the close-date harvest of that pipeline, not a new thesis about why firms cross the Atlantic.

Completed and announced are different clocks. A general counsel who tracks announcements is a year early on the conflicts wall and a year late on the talent that already walked in the vote-to-close window. The close date, not the announcement, is the day the conflicts wall actually moved.

Citi Hildebrandt 2026 Client Advisory, 185-firm flash sample, nine months of 2025 against nine months of 2024. Rate-led revenue on thin demand is the cyclical engine under the close list. Demand growth sits in the figures above, not here.

Citi Hildebrandt 2026 Client Advisory (42 Am Law 1-50, 38 Am Law 51-100, 51 Second Hundred, 54 others in the flash sample).

Reuters, on 4 March 2026, recorded Wells Fargo Legal Specialty Group at 12.6 percent average big-law revenue growth for 2025. That is a second 2025 revenue print, not a demand series. Equity partner headcount in the Citi sample fell 0.5 percent; all net headcount growth came from salaried lawyers. The seats combinations actually add, on that evidence, are income-partner and acquired midsize partners, not a larger first-year class.

Two 2025 platforms still sit on 2026 operating books and are not 2026 closes. Troutman Pepper Locke, closed 1 January 2025, reported $1.85 billion of 2025 revenue on 4 February 2026 and said 86 percent of its top 100 clients already work with both legacy benches, at an average of 11 practice groups per client. McDermott Will & Schulte closed 1 August 2025 at about 1,750 lawyers, with 2024 combined revenue more than $2.8 billion on American Lawyer figures cited by Reuters that day. Those are the year-after and still-integrating comparators. They are not this year’s close list.

The close date, not the announcement, is the day the conflicts wall actually moved.

03 Who pays

What a company can still instruct after each close

The instructing client is a financial institution, a private-capital sponsor, a sovereign or pension desk, or a Fortune 100 company. The close either keeps that instruction on the combined letterhead, moves it with a departing partner, or sends it out to tender.

Across the same New York interview cohort, 214 general counsel, deputy general counsel and heads of legal at companies that instruct New York finance or disputes benches, over a 24-month window, told Sartori they reopened an outside-counsel guideline or a conflicts memo in the close week rather than at announcement. That is 61 percent of that segment. A general counsel at a Fortune 100 financial institution put it more sharply: the 1 July letterhead change was the day her outside-counsel manager had to re-run the concurrent-matter report, not the December announcement.

Hogan Lovells Cadwalader’s own 1 July 2026 launch names the buyer as leading financial institutions, multinational corporations, private capital firms, governments, sovereign entities, and companies in highly regulated sectors. The New York location page, accessed in 2026, puts the seat against financial institutions, private capital sponsors, real estate investors, public companies, and infrastructure and energy clients, with a second sentence that adds Fortune 100 companies and investment funds. Two Manhattan addresses — 390 Madison Avenue and 200 Liberty Street — keep a Midtown Hogan seat and a downtown finance seat. Bloomberg Law, on 30 June 2026, recorded the combined-firm CEO putting New York at over 300 lawyers with projected office revenue of nearly $500 million and implied New York revenue per lawyer of about $1.46 million.

The Association of Corporate Counsel, in an amicus dated 1 December 2016 that remains the in-house bar’s cited authority on open-ended advance waivers, then represented more than 40,000 in-house lawyers at more than 10,000 organizations in over 85 countries. Its argument is the 2026 close: a combination can expand a firm so that clients suddenly become adverse, and the firm must disclose the new circumstances and obtain informed consent. Bloomberg Law, on 16 December 2024, recorded that most states have adopted ABA Model Rule 1.7, that effectiveness of an advance waiver turns on whether the client reasonably understands the risks, and that specific waivers are more likely to be enforced than open-ended ones. The 2016 date is the brief. The 2026 close is the new fact pattern the brief was written for.

Three transatlantic platforms, three instruction maps. Firm-stated close-day size; talent consequence from the launch pages, Reuters and receiving-firm announcements. This is not a ranking.
Close A company can still instruct A company can still hire What does not stay
HLC, 1 July 2026 Finance, funds, structured products, regulatory, disputes, if no concurrent adverse matter U.S. associate and partner seats gated by ABA J.D., bar membership and a 2,000-hour bonus rule A plaintiff-side trial partner who substantially ran a matter against a Hogan client; the Charlotte fund-finance inventory already on rival letterheads
Ashurst Perkins Coie, 28-29 June 2026 Technology, energy and infrastructure, financial services across 52 offices Reach consultants inside the client in the UK and Australia; U.S. patent-agent track; London trainees on a 2.1 / SQE gate A lead solicitor on a contentious London matter that cannot be waived under SRA 6.2 — there is no New York-style screen shortcut
Winston Taylor, 1 June 2026 Major litigation, critical transactions, strategic IP, private wealth, across U.S., UK, Europe, LatAm, Middle East The combined 1,400+ lawyer platform once local integration is complete A Dutch or Belgian instruction that still sits on the legacy verein until local approvals land

Ashurst Perkins Coie’s Reach page is explicit about the in-house product: contracts and invoices run through the combined firm, currently Australia and the UK, day-rate or hourly or retainer, with no extra employment on-costs. Practice labels on that panel include corporate, construction, disputes, employment, financial services, IP, projects, planning and environment, real estate, and technology. The published example is a leading Australian wealth manager integrating a superannuation-fund acquisition and another bank’s wealth arm with three consultants on twelve- to eighteen-month terms. That is a chief legal officer buying combined-firm talent without adding permanent headcount.

Carta Law is the other off-panel path, and Fairfax’s Q2 note excludes alternative-business-structure deals from the completed-merger tally. Legal Futures, on 18 May 2026, recorded San Francisco software company Carta acquiring London Avantia to create an SRA-regulated alternative business structure with 13 solicitors overseeing AI output. The product page says it does not replace complex outside counsel. A PE or VC general counsel can move high-volume NDA, KYC, AML and LP-transfer work off a panel firm from May 2026. NAV and GP facilities, disputes and cross-border M&A stay with the platforms that just closed.

04 Who earns

What the close does to the number on the offer letter

The partner sitting through a 2026 combination is not on one scale. U.S. associates lock to the matching-firm band that hit on 1 July. London NQ at the Hogan legacy is a sterling print. Cadwalader London stays on New York dollars. Partner economics sit in the last standalone books, not in a combined 2026 audit.

U.S. dollar prints in force around the 1 July 2026 close. Cadwalader London first-year still on the pre-Milbank Cravath figure as of 4 June; matching-firm U.S. scale presumed effective 1 July. Sterling NQ is a separate print, in the prose below.
$200k$480k

Cadwalader London first-year, still on the Cravath print

Legal Business, 4 June 2026 — the scale that preceded the 2 June Milbank move. On-record fact is New York-scale pay in London, not a firm-issued sterling band.

Legal Business, 4 June 2026 ↗

Legal Cheek, on 23 June 2026, quoting a Hogan Lovells spokesperson, put the London NQ base at £145,000 from 1 May 2026, up 3.5 percent from £140,000. Trainees sit at £56,000 year one and £61,000 year two. Magic Circle NQ is stated there at £150,000; Baker McKenzie and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer at £145,000. The same spokesperson said U.S. associate structures are aligned and that they differ in London because Cadwalader lawyers are paid on New York scales and billable-hour targets. A journalist conversion of that New York print into sterling is not a firm-issued band, and it is not used here.

Hogan Lovells Cadwalader’s U.S. careers page requires a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and bar membership. The bonus gate is 2,000 billable hours a year, with up to 150 nonbillable Firm Investment Hours counting toward eligibility. Ashurst Perkins Coie’s London training contract is four six-month seats, one in Global Loans or Global Markets, a 2.1 academic gate, firm-sponsored SQE, trainee pay of £60,000 / £65,000, and a 24-month contract the firm will not shorten for prior qualifying work experience if the candidate wants an NQ offer there. SQE has been required for future joiners from September 2023. The 2026 NQ class at the London legs of these platforms is an SQE cohort.

Partner-level books that feed the 1 July platform are last-year standalone figures. Hogan Lovells, on 4 March 2026, reported FY2025 global gross revenue of $3.285 billion, PEP of $3.522 million, and revenue per lawyer of $1.210 million. Americas were about 50 percent of billings, about $1.6 billion; EMEA 46 percent; Asia-Pacific 4 percent. U.S. billings were up nearly 12 percent; the firm noted U.S. PEP grew about 24 percent and that this was not a full regional PEP table. Cadwalader, via Reuters the same day, recorded 2025 revenue of $616 million, down 3.3 percent, and PEP of $3.47 million, down 6.4 percent, with more than 100 lawyers hired in 2025. Adding those two 2025 books produces $3.901 billion of last full-year gross sitting under the 1 July close. That sum is not a combined audited 2026 figure. The launch states $3.6 billion+.

Hogan Lovells FY2025 billings mix, firm results dated 4 March 2026. The 1 July platform is a corporate-and-finance letterhead with a regulatory-and-IP second engine and a disputes third. Shares are of Hogan billings, not of the combined 2026 run-rate.

Hogan Lovells FY2025 results, 4 March 2026.

Ashurst’s last standalone year, ended 30 April 2025 and published 1 July 2025, recorded revenue of £1.034 billion and PEP of £1.390 million. Perkins Coie 2025 revenue was not on a page and is omitted. Winston Taylor revenue is two published figures for the same close: Bloomberg Law, on 1 June 2026, wrote $1.75 billion; Global Legal Post the same day wrote revenue in the region of £1.2 billion ($1.6 billion), placed just outside the top 40 in the Global 200 according to data published by Law.com. They are competing press figures. They are not collapsed here. A Legal Business forward target of $2 billion is not a measured book.

Hogan Lovells, in its 4 March 2026 FY2025 results, said it invested approximately 5 percent of FY2025 revenue in technological innovation and digitalization, including ELTEMATE. The 15 April 2026 vote release sold the combination as a way to invest in top talent and in AI. The CEO, on the record that day via Reuters, said downsizing was not contemplated in the integration. Associate bonus at the U.S. firm remains hours-gated. Rate-led 2025 books can fund the matching-firm first-year scale without a matching increase in billed hours. The pressure sits on nonequity and on integration roles.

05 The screen

The rule that decides who cannot stay

New York Rule 1.10(c) lets a hiring firm screen most laterals. It does not screen a lawyer who substantially ran a litigation, arbitration or other adjudicative matter. That is why a plaintiff-side trial desk left Cadwalader in February, four months before the 1 July letterhead existed.

Across that same cohort, 156 partners sitting inside combining or recently combined New York platforms, over a 24-month window, said their first post-vote meeting was with the conflicts team, not with a client. That is 44 percent of that segment. A practice chair at an Am Law 50 platform that received a displaced fund-finance bench told us the combined platform was hiring a rebuild. The Charlotte seats were filled four to ten months before the combined letterhead existed.

New York Rule 1.10(c), at 22 NYCRR § 1200.1.10, has been in force since 1 January 2025. When a lawyer joins a firm, the firm may not take a same or substantially related matter adverse to the lateral’s former client unless the lateral acquired no material confidential information, or the new firm promptly notifies personnel, screens, apportions no fee, and gives written notice to the former client. Screening will not prevent imputation where the matter is a litigation, arbitration or other adjudicative proceeding and the lateral substantially participated in the management and direction of the matter, or had substantial decision-making responsibility on a continuous day-to-day basis. Waiver remains available under Rule 1.7. NYC Bar Formal Opinion 2026-1, dated 30 July 2026, is the post-close how-to: notice is prompt if within a couple of weeks of joining; the screen itself must be in place immediately; a senior partner leading the matter generally meets the standard; a junior associate limited to document review generally does not.

Reuters, on 9 February 2026, recorded five Cadwalader litigation partners joining a Boston-founded national firm’s New York litigation bench, citing a plaintiff/defendant conflict on meat-products antitrust matters where Hogan Lovells represented a defendant. Cadwalader’s spokesperson called minimal conflicts inevitable in creating a global firm of more than 3,100 lawyers. Above the Law the same day reported at least 17 partners having left Cadwalader since the merger announcement, with same-day M&A partner exits to other platforms. The names are not the story. The adjudicative carve-out is.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority Code of Conduct, rules 6.1 to 6.5, applies to anyone practicing as a solicitor on the London side of Winston Taylor, Ashurst Perkins Coie or Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, and the introduction expressly covers in-house solicitors. There is no U.S.-style 1.10(c) adjudicative carve-out. Own-interest and client-conflict bars; exceptions only for substantially common interest or clients competing for the same objective, with written informed consent, safeguards, and reasonableness. Former-client confidential information that is material and adverse bars acting unless effective measures eliminate real risk of disclosure or written informed consent. A 1 June, 28 June or 1 July London close does not create a screen-and-notify shortcut. Partner-level contentious conflicts either waive or walk.

The Charlotte fund-finance raid is the other pre-close map. Reuters, on 26 January 2026, recorded Orrick opening Charlotte in October 2025 with 37 lawyers from Cadwalader, Proskauer taking four leveraged-finance partners in September 2025, and a receiving Am Law platform building a 15-20 attorney fund-finance desk in January-February 2026 from Cadwalader, Haynes Boone and Mayer Brown. Cadwalader said it had hired more than 20 fund-finance lawyers in 2025 and still described the team as the largest in the market. Paul Hastings, on 26 January 2026, cited a $1.2 trillion fund-finance market anticipated to more than double to over $2.5 trillion by 2030. What Hogan Lovells Cadwalader can still hire in Charlotte after 1 July is a rebuilt bench, not the 2025 book. The HLC 15 April vote release still called Charlotte a rapidly growing financial capital and said the combined firm would have one of the largest major-firm offices there.

The Charlotte seats were filled four to ten months before the combined letterhead existed.

06 The rest of the list

Mid-market closes, and the capital path that is not a merger

Most of Fairfax's 2026 completions are not transatlantic platforms. They change which regional firm holds the relationship partner for a Twin Cities, Phoenix, Tulsa or Boston general counsel. Alternative business structures are the substitute path for firms that do not merge.

Cozen O’Connor’s 5 January 2026 release on Moss & Barnett describes the Twin Cities as home to the highest concentration of Fortune 500 companies per capita among large U.S. metropolitan areas. Minneapolis presence more than 70 lawyers; Midwest team over 120; firmwide real estate nearly 100. Practices named as deepened: regulatory, transactional, real estate, financial, energy and public utilities. The combined Minneapolis office is targeting a permanent site in Q2 2027 for 120+ attorneys and business professionals. FBT Gibbons, the same week, described a platform spanning Fortune 500 companies to high-growth and mid-market businesses, with a new life-sciences industry team and an expanded white-collar and investigations group.

Spencer Fane’s 1 July 2026 close with Conner & Winters is that platform’s third combination of 2026: more than 750 attorneys across 38 offices, against Conner & Winters at more than 75 attorneys in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Practices named: energy, construction, health care, litigation, finance, complex commercial. Harris Beach Murtha’s homepage, accessed in 2026, treats the Peabody & Arnold combination as complete: Boston presence more than doubled, well over 300 attorneys across 19 offices. Fairfax had listed it as announced for Q3 with 261 + 40 lawyers. The firm page is the close-day source used here.

Fennemore and Gallagher & Kennedy, announced 9 September 2026 for a 1 December effective date, would put nearly 300 lawyers and legal professionals in Phoenix and more than 800 across the firm. Capabilities named: natural resources, environmental, water, litigation, business law, plus a Santa Fe / New Mexico presence. It is a traditional partnership merger in Arizona, the state whose Supreme Court licenses Alternative Business Structures under Rules 31 and 31.1(c). Law.com, on 22 July 2026, put Arizona ABS licenses at about 150, about one-third personal injury and mass tort, with 14 of 17 PE-backed ABS firms in that slice. PE capital is an alternative to combining with an Am Law platform for those practices. It is not the capital path for an HLC-scale finance platform. The mandatory seat an ABS creates is an Arizona-barred compliance lawyer.

Winston Taylor’s Benelux integration is the other unfinished regulatory file. Global Legal Post, on 1 June 2026, recorded that Taylor Wessing partners in the Netherlands and Belgium voted to operate under the Winston Taylor brand, with full integration expected over time subject to regulatory approvals, and a cooperation and referral arrangement with the remaining Taylor Wessing verein including Germany. A Dutch or Belgian instruction on 1 June 2026 may still sit on a legacy verein. The 100+ Benelux lawyers and civil-law notaries on the firm page are not day-one combined-firm inventory.

07 The file

How the New York partner line actually behaves around a close

Sartori has worked the New York partner line for more than 10 years, for companies that instruct combining platforms and for the platforms themselves. Typical time-to-fill is 4 to 7 months. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 39 percent.

The buyer is the company. The question is whether the combined letterhead can still be instructed, and whether the lawyer who walked is a hire.

  • Re-run concurrent matters in the close week. Announcement-era waivers were written for a smaller map. The Association of Corporate Counsel’s merger-expanded-adverse argument is the brief.
  • Ask which side of an adjudicative file you sit on. If the combined firm already represents the defendant, the plaintiff-side trial partner is not coming with the letterhead in New York.
  • Price the in-house alternative before you re-tender. Reach, a six-month secondment, or a permanent deputy-GC hire are different products. Carta Law is for high-volume funds paperwork, not for the NAV facility.
  • Do not treat a no-downsizing quote as a talent map. Charlotte and the February trial exits moved before 1 July. The launch-day census is not the bench you used to instruct.

The partner sitting through a close is earning on one of two clocks: the matching-firm U.S. band, or a London print that the combined firm has already said will not fully unify.

  • Ask whether your matter is adjudicative and whether you ran it. If yes, New York 1.10(c)(3) is a walk-or-waiver question, not a screen question.
  • Do not wait for the close to test portability. The fund-finance inventory that moved in September 2025 through February 2026 is the cautionary calendar.
  • London is SRA 6.1 to 6.5, not Rule 1.10(c). A lead solicitor on a contentious file does not get a New York-style screen onto the merged entity.
  • Read the two pay structures as a feature. U.S. aligned, London different, is an on-record position at Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, not a rumor on a comment thread.

Of the 22 closed New York partner searches over the trailing three years, 9 were combination-adjacent: a conflicts walk, a displaced finance book, or a company hiring the lawyer the merged letterhead could no longer keep. Of those 9, 4 stalled at least once because the instructing general counsel would not refresh an advance waiver after the close expanded the adverse map. 3 closed onto a receiving Am Law platform that was not the client’s first-choice combined letterhead. 2 completed onto the combined platform after a Rule 1.10(c) screen — associate and counsel seats, not lead litigators. Median offer-to-acceptance on the line is 15 working days. Completion on the line is 93 percent. Those 9 files are why the 93 percent still includes searches that ran to the long end of 4 to 7 months: the conflicts screen could not be written until both client lists were unioned.

On the 9 combination-adjacent files, only 2 drew a stay-put offer the sending platform could actually honor, because the book still had a conflicts home. Seven did not. A stay-put that cannot keep the matter is not a counter-offer. Our mandate telemetry also cannot see the partner who never takes a call because the combined lockstep already matched them. That inventory never becomes a file, and it is the cut this page is weakest on.

Two composite mandates, same close calendar

A Fortune 100 financial-institution general counsel opened a New York panel-lead search in the vote-to-close window after two structured-finance matters sat on opposite sides of the combining platforms. The brief was a relationship partner who could be instructed on 1 July. Six weeks in, the concurrent-matter report still showed a live adverse file. We rewrote the brief around a receiving-firm partner who had already taken a conflicts walk, not around the combined letterhead the company had hoped to keep. The seat filled in five and a half months. The accepted offer was signed in 15 working days. The company kept a panel. It was not the panel it had budgeted in December.

A combining transatlantic platform opened a Charlotte fund-finance rebuild after the pre-close raids. The first brief wanted the 2025 names. Those names were already on two other Am Law letterheads. We rewrote the brief around a 3-to-6-year fund-finance associate band and a partner who had not sat the 2025 subscription-line book. The file took seven months, the long end of the New York partner band. The instructing client still wanted the 2025 inventory. We could not deliver it. That is the uncomfortable completion: a closed search against the original specification, counted inside the 22, that did not restore the bench the general counsel used to instruct.

If the volume is still an in-house seat rather than a panel rewrite, the New York in-house line we already run is in-house counsel recruiting. If the volume is a partner who cannot stay on the combined letterhead, it is partner and lateral recruiting. How long the partner file actually takes is a sibling page: how long a lateral partner search takes. Why combinations fail on culture is another sibling, and it is not this list.

08 Method

Firm launches, Fairfax census, Citi Hildebrandt, and New York Rule 1.10

Close-day headcount comes from the combining firm. Completed-deal counts come from Fairfax Associates. Cyclical rates come from Citi Hildebrandt. The screen that decides who walks is the New York rule and the SRA Code.

Sartori & Partners maps roughly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. Combination-adjacent cuts sit inside the closed-search total. Interview segments sit inside the city cohort named in the byline. Fairfax Associates is a law-firm strategy consultancy that also advises on combinations; the counts used here are its published completed-merger census, not a hiring survey, and the notes themselves record that it advised on three of the largest 100-plus-lawyer 2025 deals and on several 2026 announcements.

Winston Taylor revenue is left as two press figures. The sum of the two 2025 Hogan and Cadwalader books is last-year gross, not a 2026 run-rate. Perkins Coie 2025 revenue, combined Ashurst Perkins Coie revenue, Frost Brown Todd 2025 dollars, and McDermott 2025 combined dollars were not on pages and are omitted. A journalist sterling conversion of Cadwalader London first-year pay is omitted. Recruiter commentary on combination laterals is not used. Named lawyers from joining lists and from the February trial exits are not used.

Close-day census is the combining firm's own release. Fairfax Associates counts completed U.S.-connected combinations (acquired firm at least five lawyers) and also advises on some counted deals. Citi Hildebrandt is a 185-firm flash sample through nine months of 2025. New York Rule 1.10(c) is 22 NYCRR § 1200.1.10, effective 1 January 2025; NYC Bar Formal Opinion 2026-1 is dated 30 July 2026. Sartori New York partner-line figures are internal research and mandate telemetry, reviewed by the owner before publication.

Law firm combinations in 2026: common questions

What do law firm mergers in 2026 actually change for a general counsel?

They change the conflicts map on the close date: Fairfax Associates counted 43 U.S.-connected completions in H1 2026. Announcement-era advance waivers do not automatically cover a letterhead that just absorbed an adverse client. New York Rule 1.10(c)(3), in force 1 January 2025, will not screen a partner who substantially ran an adjudicative matter onto the combined firm. A chief legal officer re-runs the concurrent-matter report the week of close, not the week of the press release, and decides whether the matter stays, walks with a departing partner, or is re-tendered.

How many U.S.-connected combinations actually closed in the first half of 2026?

Fairfax Associates counted 43 completed U.S.-connected mergers in H1 2026, two fewer than H1 2025. Q1 produced 31 closes; Q2 only 7, and those seven include Winston Taylor and Ashurst Perkins Coie. Law360, as reported by Best Law Firms on 16 July 2026, put newly announced deals at 35 in H1, matching H1 2025. 2026 is a close-date year for 2025 mega-announcements, not a new-deal boom.

Can a New York trial partner stay on a merged letterhead that already sits on the other side?

No, if they substantially ran the adjudicative matter: New York Rule 1.10(c)(3) has been in force since 1 January 2025. Screening will not prevent imputation in that carve-out. Only a waiver from the former client does. The five-partner plaintiff antitrust team that left Cadwalader on 9 February 2026, as reported by Reuters, is that fact pattern: Hogan Lovells already represented a defendant. NYC Bar Formal Opinion 2026-1, dated 30 July 2026, is the how-to that landed 29 days after the 1 July close.

What do combining-firm associates earn on the 1 July 2026 close date?

U.S. first-year base at matching firms is $235,000, the Milbank scale Above the Law recorded from 2 June 2026, presumed effective 1 July. Eighth-year base is $455,000. Hogan Lovells London NQ base is £145,000 from 1 May 2026 (Legal Cheek, 23 June 2026). Cadwalader London remained on the Cravath first-year print of $225,000 as of Legal Business on 4 June. The combined firm said, on the record, that U.S. associate structures are aligned and that they differ in London because Cadwalader lawyers stay on New York scales.

Can a company hire combined-firm lawyers without adding a permanent in-house seat?

Yes. Ashurst Perkins Coie Reach, live at the 28-29 June 2026 close, places day-rate consultants inside client teams in the UK and Australia. Contracts run through the firm, with no extra employment on-costs. The London training contract still budgets a six-month in-house seat. Carta Law, an SRA alternative business structure launched in May 2026 with 13 solicitors, told clients it does not replace complex outside counsel. Routine funds documentation can move; NAV facilities, disputes and cross-border M&A stay on the panel.

Does a White House settlement on one legacy firm automatically bind the combined letterhead?

Reuters, on 15 April 2026, recorded a Cadwalader pledge of $100 million in free legal work; a co-managing partner declined to say whether it carries into Hogan Lovells Cadwalader. Cadwalader was one of nine major firms to reach an agreement with the administration in 2025. A general counsel who refused to instruct a settling firm, or who relied on the settlement, still has a live panel question on 1 July. Perkins Coie, by contrast, litigated Executive Order 14230 to a 2 May 2025 permanent injunction and still closed into Ashurst Perkins Coie on 28-29 June 2026.
