Market · 2026 partnership classes
Who made partner in 2026, and where.
The partnership math discarded most of the people a general counsel will actually hire. The dated class lists tell you who got the title, which rung it was, and which cities and practices produced them.
The class is not the in-house hire.
In New York, Cravath elected five new members on 1 January 2026. A general counsel reading a 2026 partner promotion list is not reading an equity census. Sartori maps about 67,000 lawyers in New York. Coverage is not the constraint. The equity gate is. The in-house seat more often goes to the counsel that class discarded.
Cravath elected five new partners who became members on 1 January 2026. Skadden selected 55 in April 2026, against 22 in 2025 and 21 in 2024, after opening a nonequity tier — and declined to publish the equity split. Class size is not equity headcount.
Open on the dated class. Then ask which rung, which city, which practice — and whether the hire is the electee or the person the math discarded. The 2026 lists are in the table below.
- $3.59M
- Average profits per equity partner in the 2026 Am Law 100, covering calendar-year 2025 results. PEP is net income divided by equity partners, not what a newly elected nonequity partner earns.
- The American Lawyer / David Lat restatement, April 2026
- $178.95B
- Aggregate gross revenue of the Am Law 100 in 2025, up 13.0 percent. Calendar-year 2025 results published 14 April 2026.
- The 2026 Am Law 100, published 14 April 2026
- $1.39M
- Revenue per lawyer in the 2026 Am Law 100, covering calendar-year 2025, up 8.7 percent. A productivity figure, not a promotion rate.

The 2026 partner promotion class is not an equity count.
The table is the census this page owns: who was elected, on which date, into which geography, and whether the house published the rung. It is not a promotion rate, and the rows are not added into a market total.
The opening fact is local and dated. Cravath’s Winter 2026 alumni journal states the firm elected five new partners who became members on 1 January 2026 — three corporate, two litigation. On the same effective date, Paul, Weiss named 28 attorneys to the partnership, eight of them in London. Skadden’s 1 April 2026 announcement lists the lawyers selected as partners; Above the Law, restating American Lawyer reporting on 29 May 2026, puts that class at 55, against 22 in 2025 and 21 in 2024, and attributes the jump to a newly implemented income tier. The executive partner, as quoted in that restatement, said the firm will continue to promote to both income and equity tiers and declined to publish the split of the 55.
Those three houses are not comparable products. Cravath is still electing into membership. Skadden is electing into a two-tier partnership whose mix is unpublished. A company that treats the three class sizes as a ranking of “who is promoting” is ranking different titles. Class size is not a promotion rate. Of 428 partners and counsel in that New York interview cohort who sat on or next to a partnership committee over a 24-month window, 64 percent said the 2026 class was larger than 2024 because of a nonequity or income rung, not because equity had opened.
Lockstep membershipThe discarded file
- Small equity class A handful of new members at a single-tier house. The title still means a draw and a vote. The class is not a hiring pool.
- Platform nonequity class Tens of new “partners” after an income, salaried or local-partner rung opens. The announcement often omits the split.
- Counsel left behind The senior lawyer the cycle did not elect. Already running the client work. Often the in-house product a general counsel actually needs.
| House | Class | Effective | Geographic center | Rung as published |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cravath, Swaine & Moore | 5 | 1 January 2026 | New York (all-equity membership) | Equity / membership |
| Slaughter and May | 3 | 1 May 2026 | London lockstep | Equity / membership |
| Davis Polk & Wardwell | 8 | 1 July 2026 | New York 5; Hong Kong 1; Northern California 1 | Lockstep-style partner |
| Paul, Weiss | 28 | 1 January 2026 | 8 of 28 in London; rest NY, D.C., Tokyo | Undifferentiated partner |
| Hogan Lovells | 28 | 1 January 2026 | Europe 15; Americas 12; Asia-Pacific 1 | Undifferentiated; 53 counsel beside |
| Clifford Chance | 28 | 1 May 2026 | London 9; U.S. 6; continental Europe 9; Asia/Australia 4 | Global partner; 7 local partners (1 June) |
| A&O Shearman | 33 | 1 May 2026 | Continental Europe 14; UK 9; U.S. 4 | Undifferentiated partner |
| Linklaters | 37 | 1 May 2026 | UK 14; Europe 12; Asia 7; U.S. 4 | Undifferentiated partner |
| White & Case | 45 | 1 January 2026 | EMEA 28; Americas 12; Asia-Pacific 5 | Partner; 14 local partner beside |
| Freshfields | 47 | 1 May 2026 | 11 of 43 in London (plus 4 recent) | After Feb 2026 nonequity tier |
| Skadden | 55 | April 2026 | NY, D.C., London and 13 other seats | Income + equity; split unpublished |
| Latham & Watkins | 62 | 1 January + 1 March 2026 | NY banking/PE cluster; London, L.A., D.C., Chicago, EU, Asia | 40 associates + 22 counsel |
| Allens | 16 | 1 July 2026 | Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane | Australian FY cycle |
Latham’s 62 is 40 associates effective 1 January 2026 plus 22 counsel effective 1 March 2026. Freshfields’ 47 is 43 on 1 May 2026 plus four promoted in recent months. Kirkland’s October 2025 mapping of at least 228 promotions is a prior-year cycle and is not in this table. Baker McKenzie and HSF Kramer Australia were not on a primary page and are omitted.
Class size is not a promotion rate.
An equity partner is no longer the default product.
The Am Law 100 still publishes profits per equity partner. The 2026 class lists increasingly elect people who will never sit in that denominator. A company that prices the title as PEP is pricing the wrong seat.
The 2026 Am Law 100, covering calendar-year 2025 and published by The American Lawyer on 14 April 2026, reported average profits per equity partner of $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent, on $178.95 billion of revenue. The methodology, dated the same day, defines equity partners as those receiving no more than half their compensation on a fixed-income basis and nonequity partners as those receiving more than half on a fixed-income basis. PEP is net income divided by equity partners. It is not what a newly promoted income partner earns.
Inside that same year, nonequity partner ranks at Am Law 100 firms increased by almost 7 percent; equity partner counts grew by only 2 percent. Attorney headcount rose about 4 percent, to 128,868. Citi’s 2026 Client Advisory, covering nine months of 2025, recorded equity-partner headcount down 0.5 percent and income-partner growth of 6 percent in its sample of primarily U.S.-headquartered firms. The 2026 classes sat on that geometry: more titles, a protected equity pie.
NALP’s 2025 Report on Diversity in U.S. Law Firms, drawn from the 2025 NALP Directory of Legal Employers, gives the multi-tier census a company actually hires from. Multi-tier firms that provided equity detail collectively listed 20,036 partners, of which 55.7 percent were equity and 44.3 percent nonequity. Equity’s share has fallen from 61.3 percent in 2011. Women were 29.55 percent of all partners and 26.5 percent of equity partners; partners of color were 12.67 percent of all partners and 10.5 percent of equity partners. A company hiring “a partner” from a U.S. large firm is, on these averages, still more likely to be hiring a man in the equity tier, and somewhat more likely to find women and lawyers of color in the nonequity tier.
The cascade into 2026 is dated. Above the Law, on 13 May 2026, places Sullivan & Cromwell’s nonequity track in a 15 January 2026 memo and Freshfields’ nonequity tier in February 2026, after Cravath (November 2023), Paul Weiss (March 2024), and a 2024–2025 sequence that includes WilmerHale, Cleary, Debevoise, Arnold & Porter and Skadden. The same piece characterizes 10 Am Law 100 firms as still maintaining a single partnership tier. That is legal-press characterization, not an ALM table, and is read here as such.
Median nonequity salary
ALM flash survey of Am Law 200 and midsize firms, restated 16 January 2025. About 56 nonequity respondents from firms of 1–99 lawyers through 1,500+. Mixed sample, not a top-50 PEP proxy.
Above the Law restating ALM, 16 January 2025 ↗| Rung | Who elected into it in 2026 | What a company is buying | Ask before you hire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equity / full partner | Lockstep and single-tier houses (Cravath five; Slaughter and May three; Davis Polk eight). | Membership. The title still means a draw, a capital contribution, and a vote. | Is this house still single-tier? |
| Undifferentiated "partner" | Two-tier platforms that elect tens and do not publish the split (Skadden 55; Latham 62; Paul Weiss 28). | A salaried senior seat until proven otherwise. Ask the split before you write the requisition. | Income or equity — and which capital call? |
| Local partner | White & Case 14 (1 January 2026); Clifford Chance 7 (1 June 2026), styled "Partner, (Office)." | A recognized step toward partnership, not partnership. Not interchangeable with equity on conflicts or authority. | Is this title portable into a GC or deputy seat? |
| Counsel | Hogan Lovells 53 counsel beside 28 partners; Latham 56 associates to counsel on 1 January 2026; White & Case 25 counsel. | Often the better in-house hire — the person the partnership math discarded, already running the client file. | Did the 2026 cycle pass them over, and into what work? |
The 2026 partnership track sat in deals, funds, disputes and a handful of cities.
The lists are not a demand index. They are a map of which practice labels and which offices actually received a 2026 title — the labels a general counsel should use when reading a CV.
M&A, global transactions and mainstream corporate were the largest published pools: Freshfields led with Global Transactions; A&O Shearman led with M&A; Linklaters put seven of 37 into mainstream corporate. Banking, debt finance, private credit, leveraged finance and fund finance fill the next column — Latham’s March 2026 counsel-to-partner list, Paul Weiss finance seats, Davis Polk fund finance and investment management in New York, White & Case debt finance in New York, Chicago, Stockholm, Hong Kong and Seoul. Investment funds and private equity sit on Paul Weiss (New York, London, Washington), Davis Polk investment management, and Clifford Chance funds in London plus a New York local-partner seat.
Disputes did not vanish. Linklaters put seven of 37 into litigation, arbitration and investigations; Hogan Lovells elected six litigation, arbitration and employment partners; Cravath’s five included two litigators. Antitrust and FDI seats appear in Brussels, Berlin, Washington, Tokyo and London. National security and international trade cluster in Washington and London on the Skadden and Hogan lists. Energy, infrastructure, projects and data-center real estate appear as named seats at Davis Polk (infrastructure finance and digital-infrastructure real estate in New York), Clifford Chance (Houston PE; project development in Dusseldorf and Washington) and White & Case (London, Doha, Melbourne).
Geography is not a United States census. White & Case’s 45-person class was 28 EMEA, 12 Americas (all U.S.) and 5 Asia-Pacific. Hogan Lovells was 15 Europe, 12 Americas, 1 Asia-Pacific. Linklaters was 14 UK, 12 Europe, 7 Asia, 4 US. Clifford Chance put six of 28 in the United States and called it its largest-ever U.S. promotion class — a measured class of six inside a global 28, not a U.S. market rate. Paul, Weiss placed eight of 28 in London. Freshfields placed 11 of 43 in London. A&O Shearman placed nine of 33 in the United Kingdom. Allens elected 16 in Australia effective 1 July 2026. The “where” on a 2026 CV is as often London, Brussels or Frankfurt as New York.
UK and EU platforms used 2026 promotions to harvest a multi-year U.S. build. Clifford Chance, reporting FY26 results on 22 July 2026, said U.S. partner count rose by 34 via laterals and promotions since 1 January 2025, with 15 of its 28 promotions plus 25 laterals in the United States, and Houston (opened 2023) at 19 partners and 47 fee earners. That is a partner-and-lateral harvest, not a statute. It is why a New York general counsel now sees Magic Circle alumni on in-house shortlists who were not there a cycle ago.
A New York membershipA specialist regulatory seat
- New York lockstep Small January and July classes into membership. The title is scarce. The discarded counsel in the same building is the larger in-house pool.
- London and EMEA volume May rounds of 28 to 47, and White & Case’s 28 EMEA seats. The CV that says partner may mean a London finance or funds title, not a Manhattan draw.
- Washington, Brussels, Houston National security, antitrust, FDI, HSR and energy-infrastructure titles. Specialist files a chief legal officer staffs by name, not a generalist partner requisition.
A general counsel is buying a survivor — or the person the math discarded.
The title is conferred on a law-firm payroll. The company that later hires from those firms is buying someone who made partner, often into a nonequity rung, or someone the partnership track did not elect. That is the downstream product.
We have worked in the New York market for more than 10 years, for general counsel, chief legal officers and, on the minority book, law firms on the partner line. Typical partner-line timelines run 4 to 7 months. Of 22 closed New York partner searches over the trailing three years, 14 were companies hiring a lawyer coming off a promotion cycle into a general counsel, deputy, or head-of-legal seat; 8 were law-firm laterals.
Six of those 14 company-side files closed on the lawyer the partnership math discarded — counsel, or a passed-over associate — not the newly elected partner. Those six ran to the long end of the 4-to-7-month band. Five of the 14 had to be re-briefed after the first shortlist because our first memo listed “partner” without the equity, income or local-partner split, and the company had written the requisition for an equity partner. That is a miss in our own process, and it is why the rung now sits in the first screening call rather than the fourth.
Counter-offer incidence on this New York partner line is 39 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 15 working days. A newly elected nonequity partner is expensive to extract and easy to over-specify. The discarded counsel is often already psychologically in motion. A chief legal officer at a New York-headquartered listed software company told us they would not put a January 2026 nonequity partner into a deputy general counsel seat without asking the capital-contribution question — and that the discarded counsel from the same class was the better in-house hire, because they had already been running the client file without origination credit.
A head of legal at a PE-backed industrial platform in the New York metro put the lists to a different use: as a practice-label map (who is busy in M&A, private credit, funds) and as useless as a seniority map. That is the right read. In Sartori’s Q2 2026 survey wave, 41 of 68 New York general counsel and heads of legal who answered the partnership item said they had asked “did they make partner” before they asked which rung. Made partner is a screening question. It is not a hiring criterion.
Made partner is a screening question. It is not a hiring criterion.
The in-house desk is not a second pyramid. Lawyers held about 864,800 U.S. jobs in 2024, with 51 percent in legal services, on the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. ACC, using BLS OEWS through 2024, put New York in-house counsel at about 23,200 in 2024, up from about 16,000 in 2019. The ABA Journal, on 9 December 2025, restated 1.37 million licensed U.S. lawyers in 2025, with New York at 190,015 active lawyers — a licensing census, larger than BLS jobs. CLOC’s 2026 report found only 37 percent of departments expect outside-counsel spend to increase, down from 58 percent the prior year. In the ACC/FTI 2026 survey, released 29 January 2026 (1,049 chief legal officers across 43 countries), 84 percent report directly to the CEO.
Two-way traffic exists and should not be inflated into a wave. A California-headquartered global firm announced on 13 April 2026 that a U.S. technology-and-growth PE sponsor’s in-house legal director of fund formation had joined its New York partnership; the firm said the practice is primary counsel to more than 950 investment-fund organizations, with $120 billion-plus of committed capital in closings over five years. Separately, a U.K. software-focused PE house’s general counsel joined a U.S. global firm’s London PE and M&A partnership on 3 August 2026. Those are named moves of a type, not a census. The company still cannot assume 2026 classes will spill in-house at scale.
Write the rung, the practice label and the credential before you write “former partner.”
- Name the product. Equity member, income partner, local partner, or counsel. The 2026 announcements often will not do this for you.
- Copy the practice label. M&A, private credit, funds, disputes, antitrust, national security, infrastructure. Those are the files on the lists.
- Budget a scarce chair. Forty-eight percent of ACC CLOs still use outside counsel as a regulatory pressure valve. This is a named senior seat or a panel refresh, not a bulk hire.
- Price the counter-offer. A newly minted title is the one the firm defends. On this New York partner line the median offer-to-acceptance is already cited above; budget the stay-put fight.
- Credential the seat. A New York in-house chair still runs through the Appellate Division. Motion admission under Rule 520.10 needs an ABA J.D. and actual practice for five of the seven years preceding application.
Whether you will make partner in 2026 depends on which rung the house is electing into — and the in-house move is a different product again.
- Read the house. A lockstep class of five is membership. A platform class of 55 may be income. Ask which, in writing.
- Attrition is the other clock. Pirical, on 8 June 2026, recorded 17 percent non-partner attrition against 6 percent partner attrition over 12 months, and 14 percent female versus 11 percent male attrition. The partnership track leaks before it elects.
- Entry still feeds firms. NALP’s Class of 2025 put private practice at 60.9 percent of employed graduates as of 16 March 2026; firms of 501+ lawyers took 33.2 percent of law-firm jobs. Business (in-house-adjacent at entry) was 6.7 percent. The in-house seat at this seniority is a later jump, not the first job.
- England and Wales differ. SRA admission, on the SQE Q&A updated 28 January 2026, still requires a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and suitability. Partner at an SRA-authorized firm is a manager of an authorized body — a regulatory status, not a title a company confers.
Two composites from the same 22-file book, anonymized to tier and type. A New York-headquartered listed software company briefed a deputy general counsel search in the first quarter of 2026 and asked for someone who had just made partner. The first shortlist was three newly elected partners from two-tier platforms; two of the three were income-tier. The file was re-briefed in week six. The hire was a counsel from the same 2026 cycle who had not been elected. Time to fill: six months, inside the 4-to-7-month band.
A PE-backed industrial platform in the New York metro opened a head of legal, M&A and finance seat after a 2025 add-on and wrote “2026 partner” into the brief. The person who closed was a 2025 nonequity partner from a banking group, not a 2026 electee. The firm made a stay-put counter-offer; signature came on day 14, inside the 15-day median. The company paid a retention supplement rather than wait for the May London round. Completion sat inside the New York partner-line rate.
Deal volume opened classes. It did not reopen equity.
Three stacked drivers explain who made partner in 2026 and who did not. A company hiring from these firms is buying a lawyer who survived that stack — or was discarded by it.
Cyclical reboundRegulatory stack
- Cyclical H1 2026 M&A and billable hours recovered. Firms elected into M&A, finance, funds and disputes. Equity headcount did not follow.
- Structural Nonequity and local-partner rungs opened in January and February 2026, before the April–May rounds. Class size inflated. The equity pie did not.
- Regulatory Executive-order clearance and Title VII scrutiny, a vacated HSR form, CFIUS guidance, FSR review, Ofcom duties. Specialist seats, not a generalist partner requisition.
Cyclical first. Thomson Reuters Institute and Georgetown Law, on 7 January 2026, put 2025 average-firm demand up 1.9 percent for the year (Q3 up 3.9 percent), with midsize firms taking nearly 5 percent demand growth in the second half while the Am Law 100 “couldn’t crack 2 percent.” Citi described 2025 as tariff-and-administration shock then a late rebound. First-half 2026 reversed the freeze: LSEG recorded $2.85 trillion of announced global M&A, up 50 percent, with 48 mega-deals of $10 billion or more totaling $1.3 trillion and U.S. targets at $1.5 trillion. The May London rounds and the 2026 U.S. classes sit on that rebound. They do not sit on a reopened equity tier.
Structural next. Sullivan & Cromwell’s nonequity track (January 2026) and Freshfields’ nonequity tier (February 2026) landed before Skadden’s April class and the May Magic Circle rounds. Hogan Lovells promoted 28 partners and 53 counsel effective 1 January 2026, then closed the Hogan Lovells Cadwalader combination on 1 July 2026 as the largest recorded law-firm merger — more than 3,200 lawyers and $3.6 billion-plus combined revenue on the 1 July launch announcement. The 2026 promotion class at that platform is the pre-close class, not merger headcount. 2027 is the first full combined year. Sibling coverage owns the merger as a market event; this page uses the close only as a promotion-gate: integration is a partner-and-counsel problem of conflicts and scale, not a reason to treat the January class as equity growth.
Regulatory last, and only as hiring consequence. The 6 March 2025 executive order addressing Perkins Coie directed a review of security clearances, contracting disclosure, and — in Section 4 — that the EEOC Chair review whether representative large firms “promote individuals on a discriminatory basis.” Parallel orders of 14 March 2025 (Paul, Weiss) and 9 April 2025 (Susman Godfrey) repeated the clearance and contracting toolkit and preserved that EEOC mandate. Outcomes of any EEOC investigation were not on the pages and are not claimed here. A company hiring a national-security or government-contracts lawyer from a named or adjacent firm is buying a clearance-and-contracts diligence item, not a generic partner.
Students for Fair Admissions (29 June 2023) plus that EEOC mandate sit behind NALP’s 2025 pipeline commentary, including a 5.5-point drop in summer associates of color to 37.53 percent. That is a 2028–2032 partnership-cohort problem, not a 2026 promotion rate. The January 2025 federal hiring freeze cut Class of 2025 federal government jobs (ex-clerkships) by 37 percent, from nearly 1,100 to about 690; that is an entry-level shock, not evidence that partners moved in-house.
Antitrust and FDI seats on the lists match a form in flux, not a settled new code. The FTC and DOJ stated on 25 March 2026 that the Updated HSR Form, in effect from February 2025, was vacated by the Eastern District of Texas on 12 February 2026; the Fifth Circuit denied a stay on 19 March 2026. 2026 promotion classes in antitrust were elected under that chaos. Treasury’s CFIUS Risk Matrix of 29 July 2026 — eight categories, plus a pre-filing portal — arrived after most 2026 rounds and validates why national-security seats were already on the Skadden and Hogan lists rather than creating an autumn hiring wave. The Commission’s FSR review (COM(2026) 368, 14 July 2026) and Ofcom’s 7 April 2026 CSEA-reporting duty do the same for Brussels and London public-law seats already in the May classes.
AI does not explain the mix. Citi put year-end 2025 AI spend at 0.25 percent of revenue and still recorded hours rising; Thomson Reuters found 90 percent of legal dollars still hourly. ACC: 36 percent of departments in active GenAI deployment. The 2026 lists are M&A- and finance-heavy because deals recovered, not because a nonequity AI-partner class appeared.
Questions a general counsel — and a lawyer on the track — ask about 2026 classes
What do 2026 partner promotion class sizes actually measure?
They measure elections to a title, not equity headcount. Skadden selected 55 lawyers in April 2026 after opening an income tier and declined to publish the equity split; Cravath elected five members on 1 January 2026 into an all-equity house. There is no published global 2026 promotion rate (promotions divided by eligible associates). Read class size as a census of a title, then ask which rung.
Who actually made partner in 2026, and where?
Lockstep houses elected small New York and London classes; platforms elected tens, with EMEA often the volume. White & Case elected 45 partners effective 1 January 2026, of whom 28 sat in EMEA; Paul, Weiss placed eight of 28 in London; Linklaters put 14 of 37 in the UK. Practice labels on the lists concentrate in M&A, banking and private credit, funds, disputes, antitrust and national security.
Is a newly elected partner an equity partner?
Usually you cannot tell from the announcement: Skadden's 55-person 2026 class did not publish an equity split. Ask income versus equity, local-partner versus member, and whether a capital contribution attached, before you price the seat.
Should a general counsel hire the person who made partner or the person who did not?
Six of 14 company-side New York partner searches Sartori closed over three years closed on the lawyer the partnership math discarded. A chief legal officer at a New York-headquartered public company told us the discarded counsel from a 2026 cycle was the better deputy-GC hire, because they had already been running the client file without origination credit. The in-house chair is a named senior seat, not a sponge for the class.
How long is the partnership track, and what does the title pay?
Pirical reported on 8 June 2026 an industry average of 12.4 years to partnership, measured on internal promotions over the prior 36 months. An ALM flash survey restated by Above the Law on 16 January 2025 put nonequity partners at about $345,679 average base and a $300,000 median salary (about 56 nonequity respondents, mixed firm sizes). The 2026 Am Law 100 reported average profits per equity partner of $3.59 million. Those are different products.
What should a company ask before it copies a 2026 partner title onto a requisition?
Name the rung, the practice label, and the credential. Of 14 company-side files inside Sartori's 22 closed New York partner searches, five had to be re-briefed after the first memo listed "partner" without the equity, income or local-partner split. A New York in-house seat still runs through the Appellate Division; an England-and-Wales seat still runs through SRA admission. The title on the CV does not settle either gate.
Firm election pages, the Am Law census, and the in-house surveys.
Class sizes come from firm announcements. Partnership structure comes from the Am Law 100 methodology and NALP. The company-side constraints come from CLOC, ACC and BLS. Sartori figures come from the New York partner-line book.

Am Law 100 aggregates are calendar-2025 results published April 2026. Class sizes are firm-announced elections, not equity counts. The ALM nonequity cash figures are a January 2025 flash survey of about 56 nonequity respondents across mixed firm sizes, not 2026 Am Law 50 pay. NALP's 2025 diversity pool shrank by about 31,000 lawyers after 230 fewer offices reported; year-on-year diversity comparisons are sensitive to that shift. Pirical's 12.4-year average is tenure to an internal promotion, not the share of an entering class that makes partner. Kirkland's ≥228 is an October 2025 mapping, flagged by the publisher as possibly slightly incomplete.
Sartori & Partners runs a continuous research program over nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally, with quarterly market surveys since 2019. The New York findings on this page come from that program’s city book and from the mandate telemetry cited above. Odds and leverage by metro sit on a sibling; this page stops at 2026 election counts and the gate a company must read. For the in-house chair those electees (or the counsel they left behind) walk into, see General Counsel and CLO salary in 2026 and in-house counsel recruiting. The firm-side counterpart is lateral partner recruiting.

Promotion class is one gate. Pay for the in-house seat, and the search desk that fills it, are the next two.

Hiring from a 2026 partner class — or from the people it discarded?
We run New York partner-line search for general counsel and chief legal officers who need a lawyer on the payroll, and we are as willing to say a requisition is written for the wrong rung as to open a mandate. Confidential, no obligation.
