Akin Gump Salary 2026: The Dated Print a General Counsel Matches
As of 1 August 2026, Legal Cheek still listed London newly qualified pay at $225,000. That is the last firm-named cell. The seat a general counsel is actually filling sits in government, energy and international trade — and a 2026 U.S. class-year memo from this firm has not been published.
The last public Akin Gump salary cell is London, not a 2026 U.S. memo.
Sartori maps about 52,000 lawyers in Washington. The firm that prints this page's cash sits at 2001 K Street, N.W., and the general counsel who has to match it is buying a trade, energy or public-policy seat, not a nickname for the national lockstep.
Legal Cheek's firm-profile money box, calculated 1 August 2026, still listed Akin London newly qualified pay at $225,000, printed as £167,000. The same $225,000 asterisk sat on Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 NQ table, calculated 1 September 2025. This is the dated number the page opens on.
A general counsel who copies the 2026 market floor onto an Akin print that has not moved is not matching this firm. They are matching Milbank. The dated table sits in section 02.

Every public Akin cell carries its year. The blank ones stay blank.
A general counsel matching this firm in 2026 has a short table: London NQ, two trainee rungs, a 2024 bonus match, and a PEP average. Everything else on the query is either another firm's scale or unpublished.
A published London cellAn unpublished U.S. memo
- London USD NQ Newly qualified pay printed in dollars and converted quarterly into sterling. Qualifying work experience, not a J.D. class year. This is the last firm-named associate cell.
- U.S. class-year lockstep Associates paid by class year in dollars. The last confirmed bonus match is late 2024. A 2026 class-year memo from this firm has not been printed.
- Equity-partner average Profits per equity partner is firm profit divided by owners. It is capacity, not the W-2 on an in-house offer.

Legal Cheek prints the NQ in dollars because the firm pays London associates on a quarterly USD–GBP conversion. The 4 December 2023 confirmation recorded historical caps of £1 = $1.20 (upper) and £1 = $1.50 (lower). The eight-rung 2026 market scale is documented on the sibling BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026; this table is this firm’s last confirmed print.
Legal Cheek, on 4 December 2023, reported a firm spokesperson confirming a London match of the then-Cravath U.S. raise: +$10,000 for NQ through 3PQE, +$15,000 at 4PQE, +$20,000 at 5–7PQE, with NQ left at $225,000. That is the last Akin-named class-year movement. The 1 August 2026 money box still sits on that NQ floor, and Legal Cheek’s 30 September 2026 table of 113 firms still prints Akin at £167,000, the sterling equivalent of $225,000 calculated on 1 August 2026. A general counsel who treats “the 2026 market first-year” as this firm’s first-year is reading a different memo.
London NQ cash did not move with the June 2026 U.S. raise.
The pipeline under that NQ is still a training contract. Legal Cheek’s 2026 card lists 8 training contracts, a 2:1 degree gate, a PGDL grant of £20,000 and an SQE grant of £20,000. The Solicitors Regulation Authority, in August 2025 materials, still requires SQE1, SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience and suitability. Client-secondment chance is 25 percent and overseas 38 percent on the Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey 2026–27 card. Hours: “No targets.” Annual leave: 25 days. A Middle East Training Programme is listed to commence 2027 or 2028. Those are London instruments. They are not a Washington W-2.
London NQ cash did not move with the June 2026 U.S. raise.
Akin Gump bonus is a 2024 match. The 2026 U.S. ladder is someone else's.
Above the Law recorded the last Akin-named bonus event in November 2024. The 2026 market raise is measured context. It is not this firm's published scale.
Above the Law, on 26 November 2024, reported that Akin matched the then-prevailing Milbank year-end and special bonus package, and that the firm kept its standing practice of extra “exceptional” awards for exceptional performance and very high productivity. The class-year dollar table on that page is an image that was not OCR’d in the research window; this page does not reconstruct it. A combined ceiling that appeared only in an unfetched Texas Lawyer snippet is omitted for the same reason.
The hours construct behind that bonus is older. Above the Law, on 9 December 2022, measured the Akin memo at 1,950 hours, including billable and non-billable activities, with a February payout. No later Akin-named hours figure was found. A head of HR who writes 2026 hours as 1,950 is reading a 2022 memo. The 2026 London card, by contrast, prints “No targets.” Those are different clocks on the same brand.
A 2025 Akin year-end grid is not on the public tracker.
Above the Law’s 2025 bonus tracker, published 26 November 2025 and updated through late December 2025, lists Baker Botts (21 November 2025) and Vinson & Elkins (24 November 2025) and does not list Akin Gump. A 2025 Akin year-end match is therefore not evidenced on that tracker and is not used here. Cravath’s 18 November 2025 memorandum — year-end $15,000 prorated to $115,000, special $6,000 to $25,000, 2026 bases still on the $225,000 ladder, no hours test, paid 12 December 2025 in New York and D.C. — is Cravath’s grid. Akin is not named in it.
Biglaw Investor’s compiled 2026 market ladder, accessed 2026, puts first-year base at $235,000 through eighth-year $455,000, with year-end bonuses unchanged by the June raise ($20,000 through $115,000). That tracker is the market, not an Akin memo. Neighboring salary pages already own that table. This page cites it once, as the ladder Akin has not been shown to have matched, and then returns to this firm.
The associate on the print, and the general counsel who has to match it.
The people who earn these prints sit in Akin's trade, lobbying, restructuring and energy groups. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who must put one of them on a company payroll is buying a named seat, not a global rate.
U.S. J.D. and a state barLondon SQE and qualifying work
- U.S. associate J.D. and admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. The D.C. office does not, on sources, publish a D.C. Bar-only rule. No published security-clearance requirement for private-practice associates.
- International-trade advisor track Partner, senior counsel, senior policy advisor and senior regulatory advisor seats, including a non-lawyer former-official track into export controls and sanctions in Washington.
- England and Wales NQ SQE1 and SQE2, two years of qualifying work experience, suitability, and a 2:1. The firm funds PGDL and SQE. Finance-led City office, not Magic Circle.
The 2026 public cells are a London NQ, two trainee rungs, and a 2024 bonus match — not a confirmed U.S. first-year memo.
- The D.C. firm employs them. Chambers Global 2026, content supplied by Akin, lists the head office at Robert S. Strauss Tower, 2001 K Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., plus New York, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, London, Hong Kong, Geneva, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh. The card states 1,100 lawyers and advisors, 330 partners, 17 offices, 42 ranked departments and 68 ranked individuals. That headcount includes advisors. It is not ALM full-time-equivalent.
- Trade runs from D.C. Chambers USA 2026 ranks Akin nationwide for International Trade: Trade Remedies & Trade Policy (10 years ranked), International Trade: Customs (Band 1; 10 years ranked), and International Trade: CFIUS Experts (4 years ranked). The cards describe customs, CFIUS, export controls and economic sanctions, ITAR, EAR, tariff classification and country-of-origin marking, with clients described as domestic and foreign companies and national governments.
- Restructuring is energy-facing. Chambers USA 2026, Bankruptcy/Restructuring — District of Columbia, 21 years ranked, Band 1, notes bankruptcy work across a broad range of industries, notably including the energy sector. That is a second D.C. seat a general counsel in energy or industrials actually fills against this firm.
- The October hire was an advisor. Akin’s 28 October 2025 press release announced a former Deputy Assistant Director for Policy at Treasury OFAC joining as a senior policy advisor in the international trade practice. The same release states the regulatory section has more than 130 professionals covering antitrust, communications, cybersecurity, financial services, environmental, government procurement, health care, international trade, privacy and transportation. Titles actually used: senior policy advisor; former OFAC, BIS and related agency roles. Lawyer names are omitted here.
The buyer is a general counsel, deputy GC or specialist trade or energy-regulatory counsel inside an operator, a manufacturer, a defense contractor, or a sponsor.
- In-house cash is a different instrument. The Association of Corporate Counsel / Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, 1,632 U.S. respondents, newsroom 16 September 2025, is the public in-house table a general counsel actually bids from. Prior law-firm experience carries a 21 percent CLO-base premium on that survey.
- Large-company CLOs sit above median. CLOs at companies with revenue greater than $5 billion show 44 percent higher base and 173 percent higher total target than CLOs at companies under $1 billion, with large-company CLO median total target exceeding $1 million, on the same 2025 executive summary. Government relations sits among the five highest-paid in-house specialties by median total cash. Energy appears on the specialty list and not in that top five; no extractable energy-industry median dollar was in the tables.
- The lobbying roster is a client count. OpenSecrets, data downloaded 23 July 2026 covering 1 January–30 June 2026, counted 300 active LDA clients and $35.7 million reported income, about $118,867 per active client. Akin ranked fourth among outside lobbying firms in that half-year table. That YTD figure is not an annual run-rate.
- Credential gates sit on the buyer. FARA registration for agents of foreign principals (DOJ FARA Unit, MFA notice 5–6 February 2026). LDA registration for covered lobbying. ITAR, EAR and OFAC competence on the trade perimeter. FERC and NERC competence on the energy-regulatory seat. Those gates decide who can do the work. They do not print a salary.

ACC / Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, newsroom 16 September 2025 ↗The seat a general counsel is filling is not a class year. It is a docket.
Demand around this pay scale is being reset by dated instruments: reciprocal tariffs, an IEEPA holding, a CFIUS rewrite, an outbound-investment statute, and an energy-tax construction cliff.
Agency instructionCourt or statute that moved the desk
- Trade policy on America First instructions pulled customs, Section 232 and public-policy seats into Washington. Reciprocal tariffs followed, then an IEEPA holding that sent the same desks toward refunds.
- CFIUS rewritten Investment-policy direction, a live steel-acquisition national-security agreement, and a Known Investor Pilot. Manufacturing filings rose. Utilities filings fell.
- Energy clocks A summer 2025 reconciliation act pulled construction-start windows forward and added foreign-entity-of-concern diligence. FERC temporarily raised blanket-certificate caps.
- Outbound statute The January 2025 outbound-investment rule stays in force while Congress-codified expansions wait on Treasury implementing regulations.
The White House America First Trade Policy memorandum of 20 January 2025 directed Commerce, Treasury and USTR reports by 1 April 2025 on goods-trade deficits, AD/CVD procedures, Section 232 industrial-base reviews, export-control loopholes and the July 2026 USMCA review. Executive Order 14257 of 2 April 2025, published in the Federal Register on 7 April 2025 (90 FR 15041), imposed additional 10 percent ad valorem duties from 5 April 2025 and country-specific Annex I rates from 9 April 2025, with carve-outs that include Section 232 steel and aluminum, autos, and energy and energy products. Those instruments pulled general counsel at importers, manufacturers and energy traders into Washington.
The Supreme Court, in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, No. 24-1287, decided 20 February 2026, held that IEEPA’s grant to “regulate importation” does not authorize tariffs. Skadden, on 8 April 2026, reported the Court of International Trade ordering U.S. Customs and Border Protection to refund about $165–166 billion in IEEPA duties across more than 53 million entries and 330,000-plus importers, with CBP building a CAPE refund mechanism. Section 232 steel, aluminum and auto proclamations of February and March 2025 sit outside that IEEPA overlay. After the holding, trade-policy demand does not vanish. It migrates.
After February 2026 the surviving tariff authorities, not IEEPA, set the trade desk.
| Instrument | Date | Desk a company fills | What it did to the work |
|---|---|---|---|
| America First Trade Policy | 20 January 2025 | Trade counsel; public policy | USMCA, 232, AD/CVD and export-control reviews |
| America First Investment Policy | 21 February 2025 | CFIUS counsel at sponsors and targets | PRC-affiliated restrictions; allied fast-track |
| EO 14257 reciprocal tariffs | 2 April 2025 | Customs; origin; exclusions lobbying | IEEPA overlay; energy products carved out |
| Nippon Steel / U.S. Steel NSA | 13 June 2025 | CFIUS and public-policy advisors | Conditional close; ongoing monitoring |
| One Big Beautiful Bill Act | 4 July 2025 | Energy tax, projects, FEOC diligence | Construction-start cliff 4 July 2026 |
| COINS Act in FY2026 NDAA | 18 December 2025 | Outbound / funds counsel | Codifies and expands OISP; rules ~March 2027 |
| Learning Resources | 20 February 2026 | CIT and customs-litigation counsel | IEEPA tariffs unauthorized; refunds |
| CFIUS CY2025 report | 7 August 2026 | Senior CFIUS counsel | 347 filings; Known Investor Pilot |
Chambers USA 2026 records Akin’s policy, lobbying, trade and regulatory support on the Nippon Steel acquisition of U.S. Steel. Lawyer names from that card are unused. City-wide D.C. lawyer pay is not this table; it lives on lawyer salary in Washington, D.C., 2026.
Picard Kentz & Rowe, on 19 November 2025, counted 91 antidumping and countervailing-duty petitions in FY2025, ended 30 September 2025, from 27 industries across metals, chemicals, agriculture, renewable energy, industrial machinery, packaging and consumer products, with about 30 percent aimed at China and 24 countries in the set. FY2026 opened with a 43-day shutdown and no new petitions in the first roughly 1.5 months. Hunton Andrews Kurth, reading the Treasury CFIUS annual report on 3 September 2026, split the 2025 docket into 140 declarations and 207 notices, put manufacturing at 40 percent of notices, and put utilities notices at 7, down from 20 in 2023. Energy-utilities CFIUS volume is falling. Manufacturing, semiconductor and aerospace volume is not.
Energy has its own clock. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed 4 July 2025, keeps full 45Y/48E credit if construction begins within 12 months of enactment — by 4 July 2026 — or if the project is placed in service by 31 December 2027, and adds foreign-entity-of-concern restrictions to a stack of energy credits, as the Bipartisan Policy Center explained on 28 July 2025. FERC, on 18 June 2025 (90 FR 26776, published 24 June 2025), temporarily increased prior-notice blanket-certificate cost limits for projects constructed and placed in service by 31 May 2027; the existing automatic cap was $14.5 million and the prior-notice cap $41.1 million. Outbound-investment rules took effect 2 January 2025; the COINS Act inside the FY2026 NDAA, signed 18 December 2025, gives Treasury about 450 days — into March 2027 — to write implementing regulations, as White & Case dated on 2 February 2026.
After February 2026 the surviving tariff authorities, not IEEPA, set the trade desk.
Akin Gump PEP is an average. Revenue says where the desk is busy.
Legal Cheek's 2026 profile puts profits per equity partner at $4.47 million. That ratio is not the number a chief legal officer should copy onto an offer letter.
Law.com International, republishing American Lawyer 2025-year results on 27 February 2026 (story dated 26 February 2026), put Akin gross revenue at $1.71 billion, up 14.5 percent from $1.49 billion, revenue per lawyer at $1.79 million, up 7.2 percent from $1.67 million, and lawyer headcount up 6.7 percent. Dividing those two ALM ratios gives a derived full-time-equivalent band of about 950–960 lawyers in 2025, versus about 890–895 in 2024. That band is not Chambers’ 1,100 lawyers-and-advisors figure, and the two series are not collapsed here. The 28 October 2025 trade-practice release still used “more than 900 lawyers” in its own boilerplate.
Legal Cheek’s 2026 firm profile states PEP “up an even more substantial 18 percent to $4.47 million.” Treat $4.47 million as Legal Cheek’s figure, not as a second ALM dollar PEP. The money box on the same card prints PEP at £3,350,000, a sterling conversion of that average. The ALM-style republication printed a 17.6 percent PEP change and did not print a dollar PEP in the copy. Individual partner salary is not a public cell. The market read of why PEP is not pay lives on what partners really make at the Am Law top 50.
London is about 13 percent of firmwide revenue, and it is not the D.C. trade desk.
Legal Cheek reports London revenue climbing 11 percent to $222 million (£167 million) in the same year global revenue surpassed $1.7 billion. The Lawyer’s company card lists Top 50 U.S. Firms in London rank 23 and revenue $222.15 million. The Lawyer, on 11 March 2025, titled “Akin’s City revenue tops $200m for first time.” $222 million is about 13 percent of $1.71 billion. Legal Cheek describes the City office as primarily focused on finance, with a Chicago addition focused on private capital and corporate clients and a Riyadh license for the Middle East. A general counsel filling a D.C. trade seat is not filling that London finance book.
Management attribution on the Law.com International republication named restructuring, private capital, international trade, energy — traditional and transition — government investigations, funds and tax as practices the firm is already a market leader in. The American Lawyer lede, via Wayback on 26 February 2026, added that with a Washington, D.C. office, lawyers were busy with investigations, sanctions, trade and policy work. That is attribution of 2025 results. It is not a hiring series, and it is not a salary table.
Name the dated print. Then decide whether title is the variable.
Sartori has worked the Washington associate market since 2017. Over the trailing three years the desk closed 33 associate searches, with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.
Of 33 closed Washington associate searches over three years, 14 were company-side hires of trade, energy-regulatory or government-facing associates in years 3–6. Eight of those 14 were international-trade, CFIUS or export-controls seats. Five of the 14 ran past the 12-week clock because the compensation committee would not open a band until a 2026 Akin class-year memo appeared — and none did. That stall is on us as much as on the board: we let a search open against a ladder the firm had not printed. Completion on the whole book is still 93 percent. The slow files are the ones that waited for a document that does not exist.
Counter-offer incidence on this associate line is 36 percent. Sartori’s Washington associate mandate telemetry records a median of 12 working days from offer to acceptance. A head of HR who spends the better part of that window aligning an internal grade after the letter is out is already inside a clock the candidate does not hold open. Typical time-to-fill remains 6 to 12 weeks when the dated print is named on day one.
Across 210 general counsel and heads of legal inside the same Washington interview cohort, over a 24-month window, 94 named the dated print — not the June 2026 market ladder — as the first compensation question. That 94-of-210 cut sits inside the cohort. A general counsel at a Washington-headquartered LNG operator told us her compensation committee would not approve a $235,000 “market” floor against a candidate whose last dated print was the London $225,000 cell, and closed instead on the Legal Cheek figure plus title. A head of legal at a trade-exposed metals manufacturer said the CFIUS and AD/CVD docket, not the lockstep, was why he was hiring, and that he would match the last public bonus construct rather than a blogged 2026 scale.
Sixty-two of 148 associates sitting in trade, energy or public-policy seats inside that cohort, over the same 24-month window, said their last confirmed cash was the 2024 bonus match or the London $225,000 cell, not a 2026 U.S. memo. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles sit behind the global program. Price the offer from the last dated print. Use the map to find who holds it.
One composite from the Washington associate book. A U.S.-headquartered energy operator opened an Associate General Counsel, sanctions and export-controls seat for a mid-level coming off this firm’s D.C. trade desk. The first offer tracked an internal grade built as if the 2026 market floor were Akin’s. The candidate produced the 1 August 2026 $225,000 London print as the last firm-named cell and the November 2024 bonus match as the last U.S. bonus fact. The compensation committee took three weeks to reopen the band. The search later closed in 11 weeks, on a rewritten cash line and a title bump. Time was lost on the grade, not on the shortlist.
A second composite. A trade-exposed manufacturer opened a Senior Attorney, trade-remedies seat after FY2025 petition volume. The first band was built from an internal grade below ACC associate-GC median total cash. The candidate’s current package sat on the 2024 bonus match plus the last public NQ floor. The company matched the floor, kept long-term incentive as the variable, and closed in the tenth week. The general counsel who ran it treated the dated print as the floor and the reporting line as the variable. That is the only arithmetic that has worked on this book.
Company-side searches of this kind are the in-house and general counsel recruiting mandate. Firm-side associate laterals sit on associate and attorney recruiting. If the question is the national eight-rung lockstep rather than this firm, use the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale. A company standing up a legal function rather than filling one seat should start with hiring your first general counsel.
Akin Gump pay: questions from both sides of the offer
What is the Akin Gump salary in 2026?
The last firm-named cell is $225,000 for London newly qualified solicitors, as Legal Cheek listed on 1 August 2026. Trainee bases on the same money box are £60,000 and £65,000. A 2026 U.S. class-year table is not public: Akin does not appear on Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard, updated through at least 17 September 2026. A general counsel matching this firm copies that dated print, not Milbank’s $235,000–$455,000 market ladder.
What is Akin Gump associate salary on the last confirmed U.S. instrument?
Above the Law, on 26 November 2024, recorded Akin matching the then-Milbank year-end and special bonus package, with a standing “exceptional” overlay and no published extra dollar. Legal Cheek, on 4 December 2023, confirmed a London match of the then-Cravath U.S. raise that left NQ at $225,000. Neither is a 2026 U.S. lockstep memo. The eight-rung market scale after 1 July 2026 lives on the sibling BigLaw page, not here.
What is Akin Gump bonus in the last public cycle?
The last Akin-named bonus fact is a November 2024 match of the then-Milbank year-end and special package. Akin is not on Above the Law’s 2025 bonus tracker, published 26 November 2025 and updated through late December 2025, so a 2025 year-end grid is omitted. The 2022 memo, published 9 December 2022, tied bonus to 1,950 hours including billable and non-billable work, paid in February; no later hours figure was found.
What is Akin Gump PEP, and is Akin Gump partner salary a public number?
Legal Cheek’s 2026 firm profile puts profits per equity partner at $4.47 million; that is an average for equity owners, not a W-2. Law.com International, republishing 2025 Am Law-style results on 26–27 February 2026, printed a PEP increase of 17.6 percent and did not print a dollar PEP in the republication. Individual partner draws are not public.
Did Akin Gump match the 2026 Milbank U.S. associate scale?
No. Akin Gump does not appear on Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard, updated through at least 17 September 2026. Milbank moved the market to $235,000–$455,000 on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July, as Above the Law reported that day. A general counsel who writes $235,000 as this firm’s 2026 first-year is matching Milbank peers, not an Akin memo.
How should a general counsel match an Akin Gump lawyer in-house?
Copy the dated print first: London NQ is $225,000 as of 1 August 2026; ACC’s 2025 GC/CLO median total cash is $341,000, the latest edition published as of 30 September 2026. Then name the seat — trade, energy-regulatory, or public-policy — because that is the perimeter this firm actually sells. Sartori’s Washington associate desk closed 33 searches over three years at a 93 percent completion rate; the files that waited for a 2026 class-year memo were the slow ones.
Legal Cheek, ALM, Chambers, Treasury, and the 2026 U.S. memo that still will not print.
London dollars come from Legal Cheek as of 1 August 2026. Bonus match comes from Above the Law in November 2024. Revenue and RPL come from Law.com International in February 2026. The perimeter comes from White House instruments, Treasury, FERC and the Court.

Sartori figures are the Washington associate interview cohort, mandate telemetry on 33 closed searches over three years, and the company-side reads drawn from that book. Public compensation cells are Legal Cheek, Above the Law, Law.com International, Chambers, Reuters, OpenSecrets and ACC/Empsight. No 2026 U.S. class-year base for this firm is used, because none was published on the pages. The eight-rung matching ladder after 1 July 2026 is documented on the sibling BigLaw scale page; this page cites only that Akin Gump is absent from the matcher table through 17 September 2026.
Compensation data is general information, not financial, career or legal advice. Actual pay varies by office, class year, hours eligibility, rating, equity and bonus discretion. Figures effective as dated in the prose. The next dated memo can reset one office without the query changing its name.

The eight-rung Milbank/market ladder this firm has not been shown to have matched. Use it when the question is the national lockstep, not this firm's print.

We price the dated print the candidate is leaving — London NQ, the 2024 bonus match, or the unpublished U.S. 2026 scale we will not invent — and we will say when a grade cannot clear it. Confidential, no obligation, for general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of HR.
