AML officer and MLRO salary in 2026

The May 2025 median for U.S. compliance officers in finance and insurance is $82,310. That figure is not a BSA officer salary, and it is not a UK MLRO salary. The table separates the public wage series from the seats a board actually designates.

On the occupation code
03 Two seats

A U.S. BSA officer is not a UK MLRO.

The title on the requisition is the last thing that matches. The statute, the supervisor, and the personal reporting duty do not.

A company that writes one global “AML officer” band and converts it at the spot rate will mis-price both seats. The U.S. seat is the individual the board designates to coordinate and monitor day-to-day compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act. The FFIEC BSA/AML Examination Manual, in the BSA Compliance Officer section, states that the appointment itself is not enough. Examiners test authority, independence, resources, and competence. The manual says the title is not important. For national banks the designation sits in 12 CFR 21.21. The Federal Reserve, the FDIC, and the NCUA write the parallel rule for the institutions they supervise.

The UK seat is two appointments that often, not always, sit in one person. Regulation 21(3) of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 requires a nominated officer to receive internal disclosures and decide whether they amount to knowledge or suspicion. Regulation 21(1)(a), where appropriate to the size and nature of the business, requires a board member or senior manager responsible for the firm’s compliance with the Regulations. At an FCA firm the money laundering reporting function is Senior Manager Function SMF17. The FCA is solely responsible for approving SMF17 even at a dual-regulated firm, and it records that SMF16 (compliance oversight) and SMF17 are often held by people who are not members of the governing body. Page text updated 11 September 2026.

U.S. BSA officer
  • Board designation under the BSA program rules
  • Examiners test authority, not the title
  • Suspicious-activity decisions run to FinCEN
  • No BLS wage exists for the designation
UK MLRO
  • Nominated officer under regulation 21(3)
  • SMF17 where the FCA regime applies
  • Suspicious-activity reports go to the NCA
  • No ONS wage exists for the function

Personal exposure is why the cash is not a compliance-analyst band. The U.S. officer who cannot stop a product, hire, or file over a relationship manager’s objection is the fact pattern the manual is written to catch. The UK officer who holds SMF17 has a duty of responsibility for the function. Neither fact is a salary. Both facts are why candidates reject a letter that copies the internal-audit director and then applies a discount.

Static comparison. Legal seat against legal seat. Pay cells repeat the table above so the two readers see the same numbers.

Search clock on the subset 22 days to shortlist, 11 weeks to accepted offer 26 days to shortlist, 13 weeks to accepted offer

The compliance-leadership book that contains these subsets is larger and faster: 21 days to a shortlist and 10 weeks to an accepted offer, across 36 CCO, MLRO, Head of Sanctions, and DPO/CPO placements since 2017. The BSA and MLRO medians run longer because the brief is the designation, not a general compliance officer. Those 36 sit inside 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house). The wider U.S. compliance pay bands, which still are not this designation, are on the compliance officer salary guide. The chief compliance officer package, a different seat again, is on the CCO pay guide.

04 The audit gap

Internal audit is paid more. The public gap is $10,980. The seat gap is not that number.

Companies keep pricing the BSA officer off the internal-audit band, then cutting. The May 2025 occupation figures explain the temptation. They do not justify the cut.

In May 2025, accountants and auditors in finance and insurance had a median annual wage of $93,290. Compliance officers in finance and insurance had a median annual wage of $82,310. The difference is $10,980. Nationally the same two occupations were closer: accountants and auditors at $83,680, compliance officers at $80,730, a gap of $2,950. The industry cell is the one a compensation committee sees, because that is where both the auditor and the compliance officer are employed. It is also the wrong cell for a designated BSA officer. SOC 13-2011 mixes public accountants, management accountants, external auditors, and internal auditors. SOC 13-1041 mixes bank compliance with environmental, healthcare, and equal-opportunity work.

The industry medians for compliance officers, May 2025, show how far the national number moves before a bank is even in the frame. Professional, scientific, and technical services sat at $91,960. Manufacturing sat at $89,290. Finance and insurance sat at $82,310. Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals, sat at $81,540. Healthcare and social assistance sat at $72,580. Finance sits in the middle of the compliance-officer occupation, not at its high end. A letter that “pays above the finance compliance median” can still sit inside the occupation’s ordinary range.

BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, OEWS wages, May 2025.

Financial examiners are a third occupation, SOC 13-2061, and companies sometimes paste that median into the same letter. The national median was $94,160 in May 2025. The federal-government median was $151,360. Securities, commodity contracts, and other financial investments sat at $124,380. Management of companies and enterprises sat at $92,940. State government, excluding education and hospitals, sat at $85,610. Credit intermediation and related activities sat at $80,240. The 90th percentile of financial examiners was $174,200. The federal examiner earns the $151,360. The BSA officer is the person that examiner interviews. Paying the officer the credit-intermediation examiner median of $80,240 reproduces the occupation error in a second code.

BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, OEWS wages, May 2025.

The seat-level gap is a different measurement. Across 6 of 9 U.S. BSA officer searches from January 2019 through September 2026, the accepted BSA base sat below the sitting internal-audit director’s base at the same institution. The median gap was $28,000. The segment is those six institutions. The base is the nine U.S. BSA searches. The window is January 2019 through September 2026. 3 of the 9 did not have a sitting internal-audit director whose base we could put on the same page, so they are not in the six.

That $28,000 is larger than the $10,980 public gap, and it runs the other way around from a casual reading of the public gap. The public gap says the audit occupation, in finance and insurance, earns $10,980 more than the compliance occupation. The search gap says that even after a BSA officer is hired above the compliance-officer 90th percentile of $133,720, the internal-audit director at the same institution is still $28,000 ahead on base. The director does not hold the SAR decision. The BSA officer does. The letter that starts from the director’s base and then “takes something off for compliance” pays the liability the wrong direction.

  1. Survey code SOC 13-1041 and SOC 13-2011. Useful as a floor check. Silent on the designation.
  2. Same-institution pair Internal-audit director beside the BSA officer. One employer, two bases, one gap.

The public gap is $10,980 at the occupation median. The seat the board designates is not that median.

05 What the searches paid

Five readings from the BSA and MLRO files.

Each figure names the segment, the base it sits inside, and the window. Dollars and pounds stay in their own currency.

16 of the 36 compliance-leadership placements since 2017 were BSA officer or MLRO searches: 9 in the United States and 7 in the United Kingdom. Each file is counted once. A person who also held the CCO title stays in this 16 when the brief we were given was the BSA designation or the MLRO function. The other seats in the 36 — chief compliance officer without that designation as the brief, head of sanctions, DPO, CPO — are not in these medians.

Community banks and credit unions. Across 4 accepted offers for a BSA officer at a U.S. community bank or credit union with assets under $5 billion, inside 9 U.S. BSA officer searches from January 2019 through September 2026, the median base was $140,000 and the target bonus was 15 percent of base. Target cash at that median is $161,000. The segment is those four institutions. The base is the nine searches. The window is January 2019 through September 2026. That base sits above the May 2025 90th percentile for all compliance officers, which was $133,720.

Regional banks and payments companies. Across 5 accepted offers for a BSA officer at a U.S. regional bank or a payments company, inside the same 9 searches and the same January 2019 through September 2026 window, the median base was $200,000 and the target bonus was 25 percent of base. Target cash is $250,000. A NASDAQ-listed payments company in New York hired its BSA officer inside this segment: shortlist on day 19, accepted offer in week 12, base $200,000. The file is one of the five. It is not the median personified: the median shortlist on the nine was 22 days, and the median close was 11 weeks. This file was faster to the shortlist and a week slower to the offer.

Solo-regulated UK firms. Across 4 accepted offers for an MLRO at a solo-regulated FCA firm — an asset manager, a payments institution, or a consumer-credit lender — inside 7 UK MLRO searches from 2017 through September 2026, the median base was £120,000 and the target bonus was 20 percent of base. Target cash is £144,000. An FCA-authorized payments firm in London hired its MLRO at that median base, with an accepted offer in week 13. The April 2025 full-time median of £39,039 is the official UK anchor under this base. It is not a candidate for the letter.

Dual-regulated banks and large payments groups. Across 3 accepted offers for an MLRO at a dual-regulated bank or a large payments group, inside the same 7 searches and the same 2017 through September 2026 window, the median base was £180,000 and the target bonus was 30 percent of base. Target cash is £234,000. On 2 of the 3 the MLRO also held SMF16. The median shortlist on the seven was 26 days. The median accepted offer was 13 weeks.

Where the first letter fails. Of 64 structured interviews with New York bank and payments hiring managers, inside the 1,675-interview New York research cohort, over the 24 months ending June 2026, 27 said the offer that failed had priced the BSA officer from the internal-audit band. The segment is those 64 hiring managers. The base is the New York cohort of 1,675. The window is the 24 months ending June 2026. The same pattern shows up in the closes: 3 of the 9 U.S. candidates received a counter-offer, and in 2 of those 3 the counter raised base and left the bonus tied to a business line the officer is hired to challenge. Both of those candidates declined the counter.

One reading does not flatter the way we first built the shortlist. On 2 of the 9 U.S. BSA officer searches, January 2019 through September 2026, the hiring manager sent the first shortlist back. The dossiers had weighted years as an examiner over a record of owning the SAR decision. The second shortlist closed both files. The miss was in the weighting, and it cost a cycle. A parallel miss sat on the UK side: 1 of 7 first shortlists had SMF16 experience and no nominated-officer record, and that file was reset before it would close.

The package fails in different places depending on which side of it you sit. The figures do not change.

Test the designation, the bonus line, and the reporting line before you test the base against a national median.

What to test Why it moves the decision
Is the seat the BSA designation, SMF17, or the CCO as well? The wider seat is a different band. Holding both without the cash of the wider seat is how offers die.
Does the bonus depend on a business line you can be asked to exit? On 2 of 3 U.S. counters, that structure was the reason the counter failed.
Where does the base sit against the internal-audit director at this institution? On 6 of 9 U.S. files the BSA base was lower, by a median $28,000.
Is the comparator a May 2025 occupation median? $82,310 and £39,039 answer different questions from a designated-officer base.
Who do you report to when you file? The FFIEC manual and SMF17 both treat independence as part of the job, not as a preference.

Write one envelope. Name the statute, the assets or the permissions, and whether internal audit is the pair you are willing to show.

What to fix in the letter What it prevents
Separate the U.S. designation from SMF17 A converted global band. The currencies on this page are not a pair.
Pick the segment before the percentile A community bank under $5 billion is the $140,000 cell. A regional bank or payments company is the $200,000 cell.
State the bonus as a percent of base, with the metric A revenue metric on the officer who challenges that revenue. 27 of 64 New York hiring managers described a failed offer built that way, over the 24 months ending June 2026.
Show the internal-audit director’s base on the same page A silent $28,000 gap. The candidate will know it if you do not print it.
Do not staff the first shortlist with examiners who have never owned a SAR The failure mode on 2 of 9 U.S. files. Examination years were not the decision right.

The company route for this brief is sanctions, MLRO, and AML search. If the audit committee wants the program owner, use the chief compliance officer search and price that seat, not this one.

07 What the company pays

The fee sits on total first-year compensation. The clock sits on the designation.

Retained only. The percent is fixed. The dollar moves with the package you actually offer.

The fee is 25 to 30 percent of the hire’s total first-year compensation. The retainer is 30 percent of that fee, paid at engagement and kept if the search is canceled. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. A retained chief compliance officer search carries a 12-month replacement guarantee. A BSA officer or MLRO seat that is not the CCO carries 6 months, which is the term on other in-house financial-crime seats. Off-limits on the client’s legal and compliance department runs 24 months after a mandate.

On the regional-bank and payments band, target cash is $250,000 ($200,000 base and a 25 percent target bonus). If total first-year compensation were that $250,000 and nothing else, a 25 percent fee would be $62,500 and a 30 percent fee would be $75,000. The retainer, at 30 percent of the fee, would be $18,750 on the 25 percent fee and $22,500 on the 30 percent fee. Benefits, a sign-on award, or a higher bonus change the compensation the percent applies to. They do not change the percent. We do not quote the fee off the BLS median of $82,310. That wage is not the package.

The compliance-leadership clock remains 21 days to a shortlist and 10 weeks to an accepted offer, measured on the 36 since 2017. Plan the BSA subset at 22 days and 11 weeks, and the MLRO subset at 26 days and 13 weeks. 2 of the 9 U.S. files ran past the point where a first shortlist had to be rebuilt. Budget the cycle for that, rather than for the 10-week median of the wider book. Interim financial-crime cover, when the designation cannot sit empty, is a separate engagement: median 7 days from first call to start, inside 60+ interim engagements, not inside the 230+.

Sartori & Partners maps 1,480,000+ lawyers. That map is not a count of BSA officers or MLROs, and it is not used as one on this page. The New York research cohort is 1,675 structured interviews. The 64 hiring-manager interviews above are a segment inside that cohort, not a second cohort.

BLS wages are May 2025. The ONS median is April 2025, provisional. Search medians are labeled as search medians in the table.

No job board and no search-firm survey is a source for a wage on this page. The $10,980 gap is arithmetic on two BLS industry medians from the same month. UK MLRO cash is not inferred from the £39,039 all-employee median. U.S. BSA cash is not inferred from the $82,310 finance-and-insurance compliance median.

AML officer and MLRO salary: questions both readers ask

What is AML officer / MLRO salary in 2026?

There is no single AML officer / MLRO salary in 2026. The BLS May 2025 median for U.S. compliance officers in finance and insurance is $82,310, which is $10,980 under accountants and auditors in that industry ($93,290). A designated BSA officer or a UK MLRO is a different seat from that occupation median. On our searches the regional-bank and payments BSA median base was $200,000 (5 of 9 U.S. files, January 2019 through September 2026) and the solo-regulated UK MLRO median base was £120,000 (4 of 7 files, 2017 through September 2026).

How does a U.S. BSA officer differ from a UK MLRO?

They are different legal seats, and the pay does not travel with the title. A U.S. bank board designates a BSA compliance officer; for national banks the rule is 12 CFR 21.21, and the FFIEC manual tests authority rather than the words on the card. A UK MLRO at an FCA firm is Senior Manager Function SMF17 and is the nominated officer under regulation 21(3) of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017. The FCA notes that SMF17 is often held by someone who is not on the governing body.

What is the salary gap between an AML role and internal audit?

In May 2025 the BLS median for accountants and auditors in finance and insurance was $93,290, against $82,310 for compliance officers in the same industry, a gap of $10,980. That is an occupation gap, not a BSA-officer gap. On 6 of 9 U.S. BSA officer searches from January 2019 through September 2026, the accepted BSA base sat a median $28,000 below the sitting internal-audit director at the same institution.

Is the BLS compliance-officer median a BSA officer salary?

No. The May 2025 national median of $80,730 is SOC 13-1041, about 436,400 jobs in 2025, of which 12 percent were in finance and insurance. The 90th percentile was $133,720. Healthcare compliance, at a May 2025 median of $72,580, sits in the same series as a bank BSA officer. Price the designation, the SAR authority, and the asset size. Do not price the occupation code.

How long does a BSA officer or MLRO search take?

Compliance-leadership searches reach a shortlist in 21 days and an accepted offer in 10 weeks, across 36 compliance leadership placements since 2017. The U.S. BSA subset median was 22 days and 11 weeks, across 9 searches from January 2019 through September 2026. The UK MLRO subset median was 26 days and 13 weeks, across 7 searches from 2017 through September 2026. A NASDAQ-listed payments company in New York hired its BSA officer in 12 weeks.

What does the company pay to hire a BSA officer or MLRO?

The search is retained only. The fee is 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation, and the retainer is 30 percent of that fee, paid at engagement. A retained chief compliance officer search carries a 12-month replacement guarantee. A BSA officer or MLRO seat that is not the CCO carries 6 months. If total first-year compensation were the $250,000 target-cash figure on the regional and payments band, a 25 percent fee would be $62,500 and a 30 percent fee $75,000, before benefits move the base of the fee.
