Ashurst salary 2026: the published London NQ, and when to match it
Ashurst's last firm-confirmed London NQ is £140,000. This page is for the associate who earns that figure and the general counsel who has to decide whether an in-house desk is worth matching it.
The 2026 number is public. The matching rule is not.
London's last firm-confirmed Ashurst NQ is £140,000, as Legal Cheek restated on 21 July 2026. Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London, and a general counsel pricing Ashurst nq salary is asking whether that cash buys a head-of-legal desk or a first counsel seat.
Baker McKenzie moved its London NQ to £150,000 from the beginning of July 2026, matching the five Magic Circle names. Legal Cheek, on 21 July 2026, still listed Ashurst Perkins Coie at the June 2025 figure. Published NQ. Not a 2026 hike.
The published NQ is a 12 June 2025 firm figure still listed in July 2026. The matching rule is a seat question, not a rounding question. When to match is unpacked below.

Two readers share this URL. The associate who earns the figure wants a dated NQ, a trainee step, and an honest statement that the PQE ladder is not published. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who pays it wants a different answer: when matching that NQ is the right in-house bid, and when it prices a junior desk as if it were a City qualification seat. The opening question is the buyer’s. The table in the next section is the earner’s. Both close on the same instruction — match the published number only when the file competes with it.
What is actually published, and on which date.
Start with the table. Every London NQ below is a solicitor base as the dated source listed it — not an all-in package, and not a PQE lockstep.
Ashurst told the market, via a Legal Cheek exclusive on 12 June 2025, that London newly qualified solicitor base would move from £125,000 to £140,000. Bloomberg Law, on 16 June 2025, reported that a firm spokesperson confirmed the £15,000 rise and gave a contemporaneous US-dollar gloss of about $190,000. That is the last firm-confirmed NQ we can put on this page.
| Employer or list | London NQ base | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashurst Perkins Coie (last firm-confirmed) | £140,000 | 21 July 2026 restatement of 12 June 2025 hike | Legal Cheek |
| Magic Circle (five names) | £150,000 | 21 July 2026 | Legal Cheek |
| Macfarlanes | £150,000 | From 1 July 2026 | Legal Cheek; Global Legal Post |
| Baker McKenzie | £150,000 | Beginning of July 2026 | Legal Cheek |
| HSF Kramer | £145,000 | 2 July 2026 list | Global Legal Post |
| US London outfits above £170k (18 firms) | £170,000–£180,000 | 29 September 2025 table | Legal Cheek |
Magic Circle in the 21 July 2026 Legal Cheek restatement is A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters and Slaughter and May, all at £150,000. The US London band is the 29 September 2025 Legal Cheek table, on which 18 outfits sat above £170,000 and Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn and Paul Weiss sat at £180,000.
The step before £140,000 is also dated. Legal Cheek, on 11 July 2024, reported Ashurst NQ moving 9 percent from £115,000 to £125,000, and noted that over two years the NQ had risen by £20,000 and over five years by more than £40,000. Trainee base at that date was £52,000 / £57,000. The June 2025 hike took trainee to £57,000 / £62,000. The combined firm’s own careers page now advertises £60,000 / £65,000 for the 2029/30 London intake.
Context for where that NQ sits in the City, not a second Ashurst figure: Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 table put average NQ across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits at £118,756, nearly 5 percent up on the prior year, and named salary compression at some firms — NQ rising faster than the senior-associate rungs. That compression is why a general counsel might match the published NQ for a senior in-house seat and still refuse to invent a whole lockstep. Legal Cheek, on 23 June 2026, counted Ashurst at 38 London training contracts and Perkins Coie’s London trainee intake at around four a year; the 2027 Firms Most List index ranks the combined firm at 40 training contracts. Those are intake counts, not a pay memo.
Matching the published London NQ is a head-of-legal cash bid, not a first counsel bid.
Ashurst nq salary versus the in-house ladder
A general counsel matching City qualification cash is not pricing a graduate intake. Incomes Data Research's December 2025 in-house tables put that number on a different desk.
Incomes Data Research, on 11 December 2025, put the UK in-house NQ median at £44,263 and the London in-house NQ median at £57,000. London legal-adviser median sat at £66,934. Heads of legal sat close to £150,000 at the median, with some surpassing £200,000. Matching Ashurst’s published £140,000 NQ is therefore more than double IDR’s London in-house NQ, and it sits on the head-of-legal median, not on a first counsel seat.
That is the buyer’s question in one line. Matching the published London NQ is a head-of-legal cash bid, not a first counsel bid. A chief legal officer who copies the City NQ onto an NQ-to-3 PQE requisition is not “matching market.” That officer is mis-scoping the desk.
Across 750 structured interviews with London associates and counsel, 94 of 128 in-house hiring managers — general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal — over a 24-month window told Sartori that matching a published City NQ for a first legal-counsel seat would overpay the work relative to the file. A general counsel at a UK regulated energy network, in that same window, said they match City NQ only when the hire is competing with the firm’s own energy-transition NQs for a funded cluster seat. A head of legal for wholesale markets at a global bank said the published NQ is a conversion price for a secondee they want on payroll, not a graduate in-house salary.
IDR also cites the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings provisional release of 23 October 2025: median full-time annual earnings for solicitors and lawyers rose 10.7 percent year on year, against 4.3 percent for all full-time employees. The City NQ war is not an isolated print; the wider solicitor earnings series moved too. That still does not license a general counsel to copy a £140,000 NQ onto a first in-house counsel requisition. The ACC survey, data effective 1 March 2025, found attorneys with prior law-firm experience had a median base 16 percent higher than those without — which is the premium a company is buying when it hires this firm’s NQ into a senior in-house seat, and which it is wasting when it pays that premium for a graduate commercial file.
Who actually writes the check. The firm’s financial-services sector page lists lenders and borrowers, issuers and investors, regulated institutions, nonbank lenders and specialty finance as the client types on Global Loans, Global Markets, capital markets and financial regulation. The energy and infrastructure page lists sponsors, utilities, producers, developers, public-sector bodies, contractors, equity investors, debt financiers and large energy users. Private capital is written as sponsors, investors, lenders and portfolio companies. Technology is written as platform and cloud providers and the businesses that depend on them. Those are the in-house desks — GC of a mid-market PE house, project counsel at a cluster sponsor, head of legal for wholesale at a bank, privacy counsel at a platform company — that can clear City qualification cash. They are not the NQ legal-counsel intake at an unregulated mid-market company.
Do not matchMatch as senior cash
- First counsel NQ to 3 PQE in an unregulated or mid-market company. The file does not compete with a City qualification seat. Copying the published NQ mis-prices the department.
- Head of legal / senior counsel Banks, energy and infrastructure sponsors, private-capital funds, listed technology. Cash has to clear City qualification pay or the shortlist will not move.
- US-scale London NQ The combined firm has not said it will pay this. Inventing a midpoint between the UK-legacy NQ and a New York print is a compensation decision the firm has not taken.
The Association of Corporate Counsel / Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, data effective 1 March 2025 across 1,632 US respondents, puts median Attorney total cash at $160,000 (base $148,000), Senior Attorney at $201,000, Expert Attorney at $227,000, Associate General Counsel at $245,000, Deputy GC at $280,000, and GC/CLO at $279,000 base / $358,000 total cash. CLOs at companies with revenue above $5 billion have median total target compensation exceeding $1 million. Bloomberg’s June 2025 dollar gloss of the Ashurst NQ (~$190,000) therefore sits above ACC Attorney total cash and below Senior Attorney — useful for a global chief legal officer, not a substitute for IDR’s UK tables.
| Seat | Match? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Head of legal / senior counsel in banks, energy, private capital or listed tech | Yes | IDR heads of legal median near £150,000 (December 2025); the hire competes with City qualification pay. |
| Projects / energy-transition counsel on a funded CCUS or hydrogen file | Yes | The firm has advised DESNZ on CCUS since 2020; HyNet closed 24 April 2025; construction runs to 2028. |
| Markets / FMI counsel on DSS or DIGIT | Yes, if the hours are real | The Digital Securities Sandbox runs to December 2028; the government’s DIGIT pilot targets a first transaction by Q1 2027. |
| NQ-to-3 PQE legal counsel, unregulated company | No | IDR London in-house NQ median £57,000 (December 2025). |
| Process, eDiscovery, ALS | No | Delivery centers in Glasgow (2013), Brisbane (2019) and Krakow (2024) exist to do this below NQ lockstep. Use Advance or Reach rates. |
| A midpoint with US-London NQ | No | No unification memo. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader shows two London scales can coexist after a transatlantic close. |
The PQE ladder and the bonus grid are not on the table.
A named-firm salary page that invents a 1-to-8 lockstep is guessing. This one stops at what the employer and the dated press actually printed.
No Ashurst or Ashurst Perkins Coie announcement retrieved for this page sets 1-to-8 PQE associate base bands, a bonus percentage, or an hours threshold. The July 2024 Legal Cheek bonus-and-target-hours sentence attached to Reed Smith, not to Ashurst. The Legal Cheek 2026-27 trainee and junior survey line of “no targets” is self-report from that survey of 2,000-plus trainees and juniors, not a published Ashurst hours policy. For a general counsel building a competing offer, that absence is the finding: you can match the published NQ, and you cannot honestly match a lockstep that is not public.
What the employer does publish is the London training contract. Four six-month seats; one must be Global Loans or Global Markets; one must be transactional; the other two may include a client or international secondment. Eligibility is on track for a 2:1. The combined firm sponsors a University of Law PGDL then an LLM Legal Practice Course covering SQE 1 and 2, with a PGDL maintenance grant of £12,000 in London (£10,200 outside) and an SQE maintenance grant of £20,000, plus an interest-free loan of £2,000. Applications for the 2029/30 intake open 1 February 2027. The page does not state an NQ figure.
The NQ who earns £140,000 is disproportionately a finance or transactional product lawyer, not a generalist.
- Compulsory finance seat. One of four trainee seats must be Global Loans or Global Markets, so the qualification class is built next to lending, DCM, funds finance and restructuring rather than next to a free-form rotation.
- A second pipeline exists. The solicitor apprenticeship starts at £31,000, rising annually, with eligibility of three Cs at A-level and a right to work in the UK; the firm has no 2027 intake. Legal Business Analysts in London start 15 September 2026, study SQE virtually, and offset qualifying work experience against training-contract length.
- SRA admission still sits in front. Degree or equivalent, SQE1 then SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience in no more than four organizations, character and suitability. The LPC transitional route remains to 31 December 2032 for the 2021 pipeline. The SRA’s SQE1 exemption page, updated 6 August 2026, states that there are significant differences between the law of England and Wales and the laws of all jurisdictions reviewed to date.
The buyers who pay City qualification cash in-house are not NQ legal-counsel desks.
- Named buyer types. Global banks and FMI providers; energy, infrastructure and resources sponsors, utilities and public procurers; private-capital funds and their portfolio companies; platform and cloud technology companies; UK central government on energy-transition files, notably DESNZ.
- London floors. The UK head office sits at London Fruit and Wool Exchange, 1 Duval Square. A technology office at 22 Bishopsgate, launched in 2024, has grown to nearly 40 lawyers and business professionals. Chambers UK 2026 also lists 22 Berners Street and a Glasgow delivery office.
- Reach is the bridge. Advance’s Reach product places experienced lawyers on short-to-medium engagements inside the firm or on secondment in-house. A general counsel who wants the skill without matching NQ as a permanent employee already has that product. Use it, or convert it, but do not pretend the permanent junior counsel seat is priced the same.
Close, on 28 June 2026, named eight divisions: corporate; finance, funds and restructuring; IP; litigation, investigations and advisory; projects, energy, environment and resources; real estate; technology; Advance. The NQ lockstep sits in the first seven. Advance is the process stack. FY25 Advance and Consulting revenue grew 20 percent, with Advance itself up 29 percent; FY26 Advance global revenue grew 11 percent. A company buying legal operations, eDiscovery or Digital & AI help is in that eighth division, not on the published NQ.
Wait for a unification memo. Do not invent a midpoint between the UK-legacy NQ and a US-scale number the combined firm has not published.
FY26 PEP is public. Individual drawings are not.
The last standalone Ashurst year is the year to 30 April 2026. Revenue and PEP are firm-reported. Pre-tax profit is not.
Ashurst’s own results, published 23 June 2026, put FY26 revenue at £1.152 billion, up 11 percent from £1.034 billion in FY25, and PEP at £1.592 million, up 15 percent. Ten consecutive years of revenue growth; average PEP growth of 10 percent a year over that decade. The Law Gazette, the same day, recorded the same revenue and PEP and noted that pre-tax profit was not disclosed, as in prior years. Global Legal Post observed that FY25 had been +8 percent revenue and +4 percent PEP, so FY26 accelerated.
FY25, the year ended 30 April 2025, was the first year above £1 billion: revenue £1.034 billion against £961 million in FY24, PEP £1.390 million against £1.336 million. The Annual Business Report PDF snapshot is 4,300+ FTE and a 500+ FTE partners band, 30 offices, 32 lateral partner hires and 20 partner promotions. Global Legal Post, on 1 July 2025, used a different definition: more than 1,800 lawyers across 31 offices. Those labels — FTE, lawyers, partners, client-facing practitioners — measure different things on different dates.
Combination economics use a third set of labels. Intent on 17 November 2025 spoke of 3,000 lawyers and US$2.7 billion in revenue. Partner votes on 13 April 2026 spoke of approximately US$2.8 billion and around 3,000 lawyers. Close on 28 June 2026 spoke of 52 offices across 20 countries and regions, over 950 partners and 3,500 client-facing practitioners, with hubs in Seattle, London, Sydney and New York. Global Legal Post, on 29 June 2026, put Ashurst’s 1,600 lawyers against Perkins Coie’s just-under $1.3 billion in 2025 revenue and $1.9 million PEP, per Law.com figures that paper cited. Wait for a unification memo. Do not invent a midpoint between the UK-legacy NQ and a US-scale number the combined firm has not published.
UK Disputes, Investigations & Advisory grew 21 percent in FY26. Corporate Transactions grew 15 percent globally. Finance, Funds & Restructuring grew 15 percent; UK Financial Regulatory grew 18 percent; Global Loans & Global Markets grew 13 percent. Six priority industries — Banks, Energy, Infrastructure, Private Capital, Real Estate, Technology — exceeded an 85 percent-of-revenue target in the 2027 strategy. That industry list is also the in-house buyer list on this page.
Companies House OC330252 is now named ASHURST PERKINS COIE UK LLP. The name changed on 25 June 2026. Last accounts made up to 30 April 2025; a filing on 18 August 2026 shortened the current accounting period from 30 April 2027 to 31 December 2026, consistent with a move toward calendar-year combined reporting. Legal Business, on 14 January 2026, reported FY25 partner capital contributions rising from £3.1 million to £7.6 million, and payments to former members from £2.1 million to £4.9 million. Those are member-capital figures, not PEP, and they are the closest public window onto how the partnership funded itself in the last standalone accounts.
Practice demand that actually added London partners in the combination window, anonymized to title: a corporate / private equity partner on 4 November 2025, with seven new UK Corporate partners in two years via promotion and hire; a real estate litigation partner on 1 July 2026, the ninth London lateral since the 17 November 2025 intent announcement; a tax partner on 11 August 2026, financial-services tax. Chambers UK 2026 ranks 48 departments and 103 individuals, with Projects: Mainly Domestic in Band 1. Those labels tell a general counsel which desks are expensive to hire against.
FY25 practice prints that did not repeat in the FY26 release at the same grain: UK Financial Regulatory revenue grew 34 percent that year; Real Estate as an industry line grew 49 percent; Digital Economy grew 21 percent; US Disputes, Investigations & Advisory grew 35 percent. Harvey generative AI was rolled out in June 2024 to all 4,300-plus people. The FY26 results also recorded the first African office, in Casablanca. A chief legal officer reading PEP as a hiring signal should read those lines as demand, not as a partner drawing.
