Associate attorney salary 2026: lockstep versus the rest.
On 1 July 2026, lockstep first-years moved to $235,000. That is the top edge of the title, not the wage most US associates take home, and not the figure a general counsel has to put on the payroll. This page is the dated table between those two facts.
One title. Five dated paychecks. Pick the payer.
New York was one of six US cities where NALP recorded a $225,000 median first-year associate base as of 1 January 2025, before the 1 July 2026 lockstep reset. That January 2025 median is not the 2026 associate wage. Sartori maps about 67,000 lawyers in New York.
Lockstep first-year base on the 2 June 2026 memorandum, effective 1 July 2026, raised from $225,000. A New York-based firm's class-year grid, then matched — not a national average. 2 June 2026 memo ↗

Associate attorney salary is a dated perimeter.
The assigned read is not a national average. It is lockstep against the rest of the title, in one table, with the year and the publisher in the same row.
Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York associates and counsel, 61 percent of 214 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal who had priced an associate or in-house attorney seat over a 24-month window said they used the lockstep first-year figure as a ceiling check even when the requisition would never match it. This table is the wage.
NALP's 2025 Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025, put the overall first-year median at $200,000 across 359 reporting offices, with $225,000 the mode — 32.0 percent of all offices, 44.7 percent of offices in firms of 701 or more lawyers, and only 6.3 percent of offices in firms of 250 or fewer. New York City sat in the six-city set whose first-year median was already $225,000 on that date, NALP's June 2025 Bulletin+ reported, alongside Austin, Boston, Houston, San Francisco and the Washington, DC area. The June 2026 lockstep raise moved the printed top of that set. It did not move the offices that were never on it.

The lockstep eighth-year base on the same 2 June 2026 memorandum is $455,000 (class of 2018). The year-end bonus grid still in force on 30 September 2026 is the one Cravath set on 18 November 2025, about $20,000 to $115,000. 2026 year-end bonuses had not been announced. Milbank paid a separate special summer bonus in July 2026, $6,000 for the classes of 2026 and 2025 and $25,000 for the class of 2021 and earlier, payable by 31 August 2026. The class-year ladder and the bonus grid are documented on the lockstep scale page and the bonus page. They are the ceiling of this table, not its spine.
NALP's Class of 2025 private-practice median was $155,000 as of 16 March 2026, down 3.1 percent from $160,000 for the Class of 2024. NALP's selected findings, published 5 August 2026, say few firms cut starting salaries; the median fell because of the mix of jobs by firm size and merger-driven size reclassification. Half of all reported graduate salaries sat between $60,000 and $100,000. $225,000 accounted for 34.4 percent of reported law-firm salaries and 21.5 percent of all reported full-time salaries. That is a bimodal first-year market with a lockstep spike, not a nationwide $235,000 profession.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, current as of 27 August 2026, still reports May 2025 wages. The median annual wage for all US lawyers was $159,670 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent below $78,360 and the highest 10 percent above $351,600. That is not a 2026 wage. Industry medians on the same release: federal government $178,380; legal services $157,870; local government $131,390; state government $115,330. That is SOC 23-1011, every lawyer the wage survey can see, not an associate series. A general counsel who pastes the BLS median into an associate requisition is mixing a profession wage with a class-year seat.
The lockstep number is the ceiling a general counsel matches against, not the wage most US associates actually earn.
The associate earns a row. The general counsel buys one.
This page serves both. The associate is asking which published figure their class year and employer type actually print. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal is asking whether to match that figure, substitute a cheaper hour, or put a different title on the payroll.
Lockstep-scale firms
Am Law platforms and a short list of boutiques that published a $235,000 first-year base after 2 June 2026. They pay a class-year grid, not a company band.
The rest of private practice
Firms of 1–500 lawyers, and large offices that did not match lockstep. NALP's last office survey still priced first-years in this set well below $235,000.
Company legal departments
The general counsel who hires an Attorney or Senior Attorney onto the payroll, or who declines to hire and buys the hours from a firm instead.
Public and public-interest desks
Honors and GS trial attorneys, state and local government, legal-aid staff attorneys, public defenders, and judicial clerks. Same J.D. Different check.
Of 19,731 Class of 2025 law-firm jobs with type reported, NALP's August 2026 national summary counted 18,606 associate or entry-level attorney seats — 94.3 percent of the firm jobs that carried a type. Staff attorney was 117 seats with a $104,000 median on 77 salaries. The title “associate attorney” is the default first-year firm job. It is not a lockstep job by default.
The associate is paid by class year at scale firms, by office average everywhere else, and by a company band the day they leave private practice.
- Scale-firm class years move on a published grid. The 2 June 2026 memorandum raised then-current summer associates with the 2026/2025 class. A lateral who loses class-year credit loses cash on that grid even if the new firm “matches market.”
- NALP office medians as of 1 January 2025 still climbed with seniority inside non-lockstep firms: all-sizes first year $200,000, eighth year $330,000. In firms of 250 or fewer, the eighth-year median sat at $197,500 — below the seventh-year $200,000. Seniority is not a raise everywhere.
- Campus still restocks lockstep. NALP Perspectives on 2025 Law Student Recruiting, released 26 January 2026, put the average 2L summer class at 8 per office, the smallest since 2020, with a 97 percent 2L offer-to-associate rate and 89.4 percent acceptance. The median office made four 2L summer offers for 2026, an all-time low. Eighty percent of those 2026 2L offers came from employer-sponsored recruiting, not from school-run OCI.
- One Am Law 100 careers split on the employer's own United States pages still separates a Summer Associate program from a Laterals track that asks for a resume, a law-school transcript, a practice area and an office. That is the operational line between the NALP summer pipeline and the midlevel a general counsel later hires away.
The company is not required to print $235,000. It is required to know which published figure it is matching, or declining to match, before the offer letter is drafted.
- In-house Attorney cash on ACC's 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025, put median total cash on that family at $160,000, with 83 percent eligible for short-term incentive and a $16,000 median STI. Prior law-firm experience lifted Attorney median base 16 percent. Forty-four percent of respondents went straight from law school to in-house; 77 percent had prior firm experience. Entry/mid-level Attorney base at companies with $5 billion or more in revenue was 27 percent higher than at companies under $1 billion. ACC and Empsight published the 2026 Law Department Compensation Survey on 15 September 2026 (1,627 US responses; questionnaire fielded 30 April to 26 June 2026; data effective 1 March 2026). The public summary does not reprint an Attorney or Senior Attorney median base. The dollars in this paragraph are the 2025 survey. They are not 2026 pay.
- Chief legal officers are not growing the in-house associate bench as the first response. ACC's 2026 Chief Legal Officers Survey (1,049 CLOs, 43 countries, released 29 January 2026) found 63 percent expect internal lawyer headcount to remain stable, with outside counsel as the pressure valve and consultants at 27 percent. Budget and resources were the top barrier (35 percent). The company still buys a large share of associate hours from firms.
- The hour has a price too. Thomson Reuters Institute's January 2026 report said Am Law 100 standard rates cracked $1,000 in 2025, against about $600 for everyone else, and that clients spent less per hour on the average legal service than in 2024 because work moved downstream. Midsize demand grew nearly 5 percent in the second half of 2025; Am Law 100 demand could not crack 2 percent. Those are 2025 rates and 2025 hours, not a 2026 wage. That is the substitution a general counsel already uses when lockstep is the wrong payroll number.
Lockstep is the loudest band. It is not most of the seats.
Class of 2025 first jobs still put the majority of new lawyers in private practice, and still put most of those firm jobs outside the 501-plus lockstep peak.
Class-year lockstepA public or company band
- Scale firm Pays a published class year. The general counsel who later hires that lawyer is matching a grid, not a survey median.
- Non-lockstep firm Pays an office average. First-year cash in this set still clustered well below the June 2026 printed top.
- Company or public desk Pays an Attorney band, a GS step, or a public-interest staff line. Same J.D. Different buyer.
Firms of more than 500 lawyers took 6,588 Class of 2025 jobs — 33.2 percent of firm jobs, and the single largest firm-size employer, accounting for more than one in five employed graduates, NALP's 5 August 2026 press release said. Combined with the 1,243 jobs in firms of 251–500 lawyers (6.3 percent), that “BigLaw” pair is about one in four employed graduates. It is not a majority of firm jobs. The 1–10 lawyer band held 5,253 jobs (26.4 percent). 501-plus hiring fell by about 540 jobs (−7.5 percent) versus the Class of 2024, the first decline in that band since the Class of 2014.
Public service — government, clerkships and public interest — took 31.0 percent of Class of 2025 jobs, down from 32.7 percent for the Class of 2024. Federal government jobs excluding clerkships fell 37.0 percent to about 690, from nearly 1,100. Public-interest jobs fell 13.9 percent, more than 475 fewer seats, as NALP recorded contract terminations that reduced hiring at nongovernmental organizations. The $75,000 public-interest median and the $81,000 government median are not only a pay gap against lockstep. The count of those seats fell in the same year the lockstep first-year printed $235,000.
The American Bar Association National Lawyer Population Survey, as reported by the ABA Journal on 9 December 2025, put resident active lawyers at 1,374,720 in 2025, up 1.38 percent from 1,355,963 in 2024, with New York the largest state stock at 190,015. That is the 2025 license census, not an associate headcount and not a 2026 headcount. New York's Court of Appeals Part 520 still treats an ABA-approved J.D. as the primary classroom route onto the New York bar. Lockstep New York offices hire against that gate. So do federal Honors postings, which require bar admission within 14 months of entry on duty.
Litigation and corporate were the two largest desks by hours in the prior year. Thomson Reuters Institute's 2026 State of the US Legal Market (January 2026) put 2024 hour shares at 27 percent litigation and 24 percent corporate, and put full-year 2025 demand growth fastest in M&A at 3.3 percent, then litigation 2.5 percent and real estate 2.4 percent. Bankruptcy and IP patent hours fell in that 2025 print. The same institute's Law Firm Financial Index for the second quarter of 2026, issued 10 August 2026, put overall demand up 3.0 percent from the second quarter of 2025, with real estate up 3.6 percent, corporate (all) up 3.5 percent, labor and employment up 3.4 percent, litigation up 3.0 percent, and M&A up 0.9 percent. A general counsel buying hours in the second half of 2026 is not buying the 2025 M&A spike.
Pirical's 14 April 2026 ranking of private-equity-adjacent practices tracked more than 50,000 lawyers in PE and capital-markets-adjacent work. One Am Law PE platform's public-matter count sat at 5,024 matters against 1,488 at the next firm; one elite PE firm's PE-adjacent bench grew from 398 to 605 lawyers over three years, a 52 percent lift. Corporate-Investment Funds hours were up 7 percent on that cut; equity capital markets were down 6 percent. That is which desk absorbs associates. It is not a second salary table.
The raise was a capital event. The rest of the title did not come with it.
A January 2025 federal hiring freeze thinned the public first-year alternative. A 2025–26 deal rebound funded lockstep. Midsize medians and in-house Attorney bands are on older vintages, and they did not reprint $235,000.
Public first-year thinsLockstep cash reprints
- The public door closes A hiring freeze and a one-for-four replacement rule take the Honors and GS first-year off the table as a realistic alternative to firm pay.
- The deal book reloads Tariff-delayed 2025 work gives way to a 2026 US-target M&A print. Transactional midlevels get used. First-year lockstep is a retention price.
- The class year steepens Firms tell their leaders they will grow associates and not first-years. The June raise is larger at the senior rungs than at the junior ones.
The White House hiring freeze of 20 January 2025 stopped federal civilian hiring for vacant seats as of noon that day, with exemptions for immigration enforcement, national security and public safety. An 11 February 2025 workforce order then told agencies to hire no more than one employee for every four that depart. NALP's Class of 2025 census is what that looked like on the ground for new J.D.s. A New York Times analysis of federal employment data, reprinted by The Philadelphia Inquirer on 2 June 2026, found more than 10,000 civilian lawyers had left since the beginning of 2025, with the stock at about 37,000 at end-March 2026 — 17 percent below end-2024. Agencies hired about 3,200 lawyers in the same window. The public first-year alternative to a lockstep base is thinner. Remaining demand moved toward state attorneys general, nonprofits, and firms.
The capital that funds lockstep is visible in the same months. The American Lawyer's 2026 Am Law 100, published 14 April 2026, reported collective FY2025 revenue growth of about 13 percent, net income up 16.3 percent, and profits per equity partner up 14.0 percent, with 92 firms posting a gain in revenue per lawyer. LSEG, on 12 August 2026, put US-target M&A for January–July 2026 at $1.69 trillion — the strongest opening seven months on record for US targets — inside a $3.19 trillion global print. Citi's 2026 Client Advisory, using a nine-month 2025 flash, still recorded 1.9 percent demand growth and 9.6 percent rate growth after a tariff-delayed start. Thomson Reuters Institute's full-year 2025 panel put average-firm demand at 1.9 percent and, in the same report, described demand as averaging 2.5 percent, with a July peak of 4.4 percent. Those are two specifications of 2025 in one January 2026 document. Neither is a 2026 headcount of associates, and neither is the second-quarter 2026 demand print.
Executive orders in March 2025 targeting named Am Law firms, including a 6 March order later restrained in the US District Court for the District of Columbia on 12 March 2025, were a political shock for summer-associate allocation and contractor work. The American Lawyer's 14 April 2026 read is that they were a financial footnote for 2025 revenue. They did not stop the June 2026 raise. Ice Miller's August 2026 announcement of a $235,000 first-year figure effective 1 January 2027 is the dated reminder that a non-New York lockstep-adjacent firm can print the number on a delay. It is not evidence that NALP's 250-or-fewer first-year median has caught it. As of 1 January 2025, 43.8 percent of those smaller offices still paid first-year bases under $150,000.
Two other 2026 clocks sit next to the wage and do not move it. The Supreme Court overruled Chevron deference on 28 June 2024 in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which keeps regulatory and appellate associate hours on the file. The Administrative Office of the US Courts' Judicial Business 2025 (year ending 30 September 2025) recorded 79,129 criminal defendants filed, up 13.4 percent, with immigration-violation defendants at 32,393, up 27 percent. Those dockets are the freeze exemption on the public side and the white-collar spillover on the firm side. The National Conference of Bar Examiners administered the first NextGen Uniform Bar Examination on 28–29 July 2026 to 2,640 examinees in ten jurisdictions; New York's first administration is July 2028. The 2026 New York lockstep first-year still licenses on the legacy exam. That is a credential split, not a $235,000 cause.
Match the hours, substitute the firm, or hire the Attorney.
The New York hub opened in 2023. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches, with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, for companies putting a lawyer on the payroll and for firms restocking a class year.
Buy the printed lockstep hourPut a different title on payroll
- Match the hours Keep the work at a scale firm. The company pays the Am Law hour and never has to print lockstep on a W-2.
- Substitute the panel Move the file to a midsize or regional firm whose associate cash sits on the NALP office medians, not on the June memo.
- Hire the Attorney Write an in-house band against ACC, say so in the brief, and do not pretend the offer is lockstep. That is the only honest payroll move.
Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 16 were company legal-department seats, 12 were laterals into non-lockstep firms, and 5 were lockstep-adjacent laterals. Sixteen plus twelve plus five is the whole book. The Sartori & Partners research programme finds, in the latest four-quarter New York wave, that 58 percent of 73 company legal-department respondents who had opened an associate-equivalent requisition priced the seat against published lockstep rather than against the March 2025 ACC Attorney median. That is a pricing habit. It is not a requirement.
A general counsel at a PE-backed healthcare platform told us they would not put a lockstep first-year equivalent on the payroll when the in-house Attorney median sat tens of thousands below it; they would buy the hours from a midsize firm instead. The file closed in 8 weeks as a panel refresh, not as a hire. That is the substitution Thomson Reuters measured in 2025 hours, a full-year 2025 print, not a 2026 wage. It is also the move ACC's January 2026 CLO survey records when chief legal officers increase outside counsel while holding headcount stable.
A head of legal at a US industrial group with more than $5 billion in revenue told us a year-4 company-attorney offer died after the candidate's lockstep base sat above the internal Senior Attorney band, and the search reopened as an outside-counsel refresh. Comparing a company offer to lockstep without saying so is how a year-4 search dies in committee. Of 186 New York associates in years 3–6 inside the same interview cohort, over a 24-month window, 44 percent said a company offer that ignored lockstep as a reference point felt unserious even when they expected to take a pay cut to move in-house. The candidate will do the arithmetic. The brief should do it first.
Two anonymized composites from that 33-file book. First: a PE-backed healthcare platform opened an in-house Attorney seat against a year-4 lockstep candidate. 10 weeks in, the compensation committee would not sign a number that referenced the June memo, and the general counsel would not sign a number that ignored it. The search stalled past twelve weeks and closed only after the company hired a year-3 from a 101–250 lawyer firm against the ACC Attorney band. Second: a US industrial with more than $5 billion in revenue declined to hire at all, moved a commercial contracts book to a regional panel, and kept the headcount freeze the CLO survey would have predicted. Both are completed mandates. Neither printed $235,000 on the company's payroll.
Comparing a company offer to lockstep without saying so is how a year-4 search dies in committee.
The cash line is not the hire.
Associates compare offers on base. General counsel compare bands. Both miss the clock, the counter-offer, and the class-year credit that actually moves the number.
Sartori's New York associate mandate telemetry records a 37 percent counter-offer incidence across the 33 closed searches over three years. Median offer-to-acceptance on that line is 11 working days. Typical time-to-fill is 6 to 12 weeks. Of those 33 files, 9 ran past twelve weeks; 6 of the 9 were company mandates in which the general counsel and the compensation committee could not agree whether the offer should reference lockstep or the in-house Attorney band. Nine past twelve weeks, on a line whose typical file closes inside that window, is the slow tail. It is also the finding that does not flatter the method: we still cannot price a company seat when the buyer has not picked a row on the table above.
Worked rates rose 7.1 percent in the second quarter of 2026 from the second quarter of 2025, and direct expenses rose 8.3 percent, the Thomson Reuters Institute Law Firm Financial Index (issued 10 August 2026) found. The 20 October 2025 Law Firm Rates Report had put full-year 2025 worked rates up 7.4 percent against 2.8 percent inflation. Citi's nine-month 2025 flash, published in the 2026 Client Advisory, put compensation expenses up 9.8 percent with productivity down 0.6 percent. Those 2025 expense lines are not a 2026 payroll census. The June lockstep raise is the visible edge of that earlier cost build. A general counsel who matches it on payroll is matching a retention price that Citi, on the 2025 flash, already told firm leaders they will not fund by growing the first-year class. First-year lockstep is prestige and a campus signal. Capacity is being bought at years three to six, and on the panel.
Class-year credit, bonus eligibility and hours thresholds sit next to base and are not this page's table. A lateral who is written back a year on a lockstep grid loses more than a signing-bonus conversation will repair. A company that hires that lawyer as an Attorney is not on that grid at all; ACC's Senior Attorney total cash ($228,000 median as of 1 March 2025) is the honest comparable for a midlevel coming off a firm, not the associate-title $165,000 first-job median. Associate General Counsel at $245,000 median base is a management title. Writing it into a first-year or year-3 requisition is how a company over-titles the seat and then cannot fill it.

NALP 2025 Associate Salary Survey ↗Google Ads Keyword Planner, 11 September 2026, four-country, measured 1,000 US monthly searches on associate attorney salary, with “law firm associate salary” at 320, “first year associate salary” at 170, and “junior associate salary” at 40. That is demand for the table, not a wage. No later Keyword Planner pull replaces the 11 September 2026 count. The associates who type it and the general counsel who has to match it are looking at the same rows. They need different next actions. The associate needs to know which vintage they sit on. The company needs a brief that names the row. For the hire itself, start with associate and attorney recruiting or in-house counsel recruiting.
Associate pay in 2026: questions both readers ask
What is the associate attorney salary in 2026?
Associate attorney salary in 2026 is not one number. Lockstep first-years sit at $235,000 from 1 July 2026. NALP's Class of 2025 private-practice median was $155,000 as of 16 March 2026, published 5 August 2026, and NALP says those salaries were collected before the June raise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median wage for all US lawyers at $159,670 in May 2025, the latest Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics vintage in the handbook as of 27 August 2026. A general counsel who treats those three figures as one wage will mis-price both the hire and the hours.
How much does a first-year associate earn outside lockstep?
NALP's Class of 2025 median at firms of 1–10 lawyers was $84,000 as of 16 March 2026. The same census put firms of 501 or more lawyers at a $225,000 median — 25th, 50th and 75th all $225,000 — and the associate-title median across reported firm jobs at $165,000. NALP's latest office survey is still the 2025 edition, salaries as of 1 January 2025: first-year median $150,000 in offices of 250 or fewer lawyers and $200,000 across all participating offices. NALP had not published a 2026 associate salary survey as of 30 September 2026. Those January 2025 medians are not 2026 pay.
What does a general counsel pay an in-house associate equivalent?
The last public Attorney-family median is from ACC's 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey: $148,000 median base as of 1 March 2025, median total cash $160,000, 83 percent eligible for short-term incentive, and a $16,000 median STI. Senior Attorney sat at $201,000 base and $228,000 total cash on that same 2025 survey. Associate General Counsel ($245,000 base) is a management title, not the first-year associate seat. ACC and Empsight published the 2026 survey on 15 September 2026 (1,627 US responses; data effective 1 March 2026). The public summary does not reprint an Attorney or Senior Attorney median, so this page does not state a 2026 in-house associate salary.
Did law-firm associate pay actually rise in 2026?
Lockstep bases rose on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July, from $225,000 to $235,000 at the first-year rung. That is a scale-firm event. NALP's Class of 2025 private-practice median had already fallen to $155,000, down 3.1 percent from the Class of 2024's $160,000, because of job mix and merger-driven size reclassification, not because firms cut starting salaries. Associate hours rose 4.3 percent in the second quarter of 2026 from a year earlier (Thomson Reuters Institute Law Firm Financial Index, issued 10 August 2026). Hours are not a national wage. The June raise is not a national associate raise.
Should a company match lockstep when hiring a law-firm associate?
6 of 9 New York company associate searches that stalled past twelve weeks were lockstep-versus-band fights. That cut sits inside 33 closed New York associate files over three years. A general counsel who needs the hours can buy them from a midsize firm whose worked rates sit below Am Law 100 standard rates. A general counsel who needs the lawyer on payroll has to say, in the brief, whether the offer will reference the 1 July 2026 lockstep base or the March 2025 in-house Attorney band. Silence on that point is what sends the file past twelve weeks.
How long does a New York associate search take?
Typical time-to-fill on Sartori's New York associate line is 6 to 12 weeks, with a 93 percent completion rate. Median offer-to-signature is 11 working days. The New York hub opened in 2023. The clock that slips is the one before the offer, when a company has not decided which published figure it is matching.
Lockstep memos, NALP surveys, BLS, ACC, OPM, and the New York associate cohort.
Cash figures come from firm memoranda, NALP office and graduate surveys, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ACC's in-house survey, and OPM General Schedule tables. Reachability, counter-offers and time-to-fill come from Sartori's New York associate research program.

Lockstep bases are the 2 June 2026 associate memorandum hosted by Above the Law, effective 1 July 2026, still the scale in force on 30 September 2026. NALP office medians remain as of 1 January 2025; no 2026 associate salary survey had been published. Class of 2025 figures are first jobs as of 16 March 2026, published 5 August 2026, and predate the June raise. In-house Attorney cash is ACC/Empsight as of 1 March 2025. The 2026 ACC survey (15 September 2026, 1,627 responses, effective 1 March 2026) does not reprint that median in public. Q2 2026 demand and worked rates are the Thomson Reuters Institute Law Firm Financial Index issued 10 August 2026. Full-year 2025 market figures stay labeled 2025. Federal GS figures are OPM 2026 tables. BLS medians are May 2025, all lawyers, handbook current as of 27 August 2026. The year-end bonus grid is still the 18 November 2025 Cravath scale; the July 2026 figure is Milbank's special summer bonus. Mandate telemetry is Sartori's New York associate line. The New York mapping count is separate from the 1,480,000+ lawyer market map.
Sartori & Partners maps 1,480,000+ lawyers. The class-year lockstep ladder lives on the 2026 BigLaw associate scale. Company-side bands live on the 2026 in-house salary map and the general counsel salary page. For how an associate mandate actually runs, see associate recruiting.
