Law firm associate and NQ salary in London, 2026.

On 30 September 2026 Legal Cheek put the average across 113 firms at roughly £119,000, Magic Circle newly qualified base at £150,000, and 23 rows at £170,000 or more. That is a sterling table by firm tier. A US class-year map does not buy the seat.

Four paychecks. Only one of them is a US class year.

Anyone looking up nq salary London in 2026 is looking at a sterling NQ table by firm tier, not at a dollar lockstep converted at yesterday's FX. Across 750 structured interviews with London associates and in-house counsel, the number that moves a candidate is the SRA credential. The US first-year ladder is a different product, sitting in a different jurisdiction.

02 The 2026 table

The nq salary London table, by firm tier.

Legal Cheek's 30 September 2026 table of 113 firms is the current London NQ census. The 29 September 2025 census (average £118,756; 18 US offices above £170,000) is the previous edition. Quinn Emanuel is not on the Firms Most List.

The Magic Circle number is not a 2026 invention. Freshfields moved London newly qualified base from £125,000 to £150,000 on 1 May 2024, a 20 percent rise Bloomberg Law reported on 3 May 2024. Clifford Chance, Linklaters and A&O Shearman matched that month, Legal Business recorded on 29 May 2024. Slaughter and May completed the alignment at £150,000 effective 1 September 2024. Legal Cheek’s 30 September 2026 table of 113 firms still prints all five at that figure. Clifford Chance’s own London training-contract listing, accessed 11 September 2026, still publishes trainee year-one £56,000, year-two £61,000, and NQ £150,000 for the 2028–29 intake.

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer moved London NQ from £135,000 to £145,000 on 1 July 2025, a £10,000 / 7.4 percent step after a prior-year move from £120,000 to £135,000 — more than 20 percent over two years, Legal Business recorded on 2 July 2025. The 30 September 2026 table still prints HSF Kramer at £145,000, alongside Ashurst Perkins Coie and Hogan Lovells Cadwalader. White & Case announced £175,000 from 1 January 2025, Legal Cheek reported on 1 August 2024, and the 30 September 2026 table still lists that cell. Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn, Paul Weiss and Willkie print £180,000 on that table. Sullivan & Cromwell prints £181,000. Kirkland, Sidley, Goodwin, King & Spalding, Milbank and White & Case print £175,000. Quinn Emanuel lifted its own sterling PQE scale by 5 percent from 1 July 2026, taking NQ to £189,000. Global Legal Post, on 5 June 2026, quoted the firm as maintaining its own salary scale in this marketplace and paying in pounds sterling. Quinn is not a row on the Firms Most List.

London newly qualified base by firm or cluster, bonus excluded. Legal Cheek’s 30 September 2026 table of 113 firms is the spine. Twenty-three rows on that table print £170,000 or more; this selection does not reprint every row. Quinn Emanuel is dated from City AM, 5 June 2026, because it is not on the Firms Most List. A US class-year map does not purchase a solicitor of England and Wales.

03 The credential

What the figure actually buys.

The 2026 London NQ number is the price of a solicitor of England and Wales. It is not the price of a JD class year, and it is not the price of a registered foreign lawyer sitting on home title in the same building.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s SQE route, live from 1 September 2021 and current on the August 2025 page, is the home-grown gate: a degree or equivalent, a pass in SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ full-time (or equivalent) qualifying work experience, and a character-and-suitability decision. QWE, updated 26 January 2024, can be a training contract, paralegal work, a clinic or in-house legal services, in up to four organizations, confirmed by a solicitor of England and Wales or a COLP. City firms have folded that into the old training-contract factory. White & Case requires SQE1, SQE2 and “SQE Plus” and then two years’ QWE as the contract. Clifford Chance requires SQE completed before the contract starts, including by candidates who already hold the LPC.

A US first-year class does not complete that gate. A US class-year map does not purchase a solicitor of England and Wales. The qualified-lawyer path is the actual shortcut for an already-admitted overseas attorney: the SRA page updated 19 December 2025 records that already-admitted lawyers do not need the two-year QWE. They still need SQE1 and SQE2 unless an exemption applies, a degree or equivalent, character and suitability, and a certificate of good standing less than three months old from every jurisdiction of admission. An SQE2 exemption, page updated 6 August 2026, is available only to already-admitted lawyers with specified practicing rights and at least two years’ professional legal work; the fee is £265 and the decision window is 180 days. Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland solicitors are exempt from SQE and from QWE. None of that automatically places anyone onto a London NQ lockstep. Firms still run training contracts for the NQ product. The SRA transitional page, updated 25 November 2025, records SQE2 pass rates for LPC graduates who skipped SQE1 at 36 to 62 percent across 2024–25 sittings, against 79 to 85 percent for candidates who sat SQE1. Skipping SQE1 is not a shortcut the NQ table prices.

The other London seat that is not an NQ is home-title practice. SRA registered-foreign-lawyer guidance, updated 13 February 2025, requires RFL registration to be a manager or interest holder of an authorized firm. An employee who is not a manager and does not carry out reserved activities beyond Legal Services Act exemptions need not register. RFLs may practice home-state law and advise on English and Welsh law in unreserved work. The Law Society, on 5 August 2025, put “over 200” foreign law firms as established in London. Registered European lawyers numbered 9 on the July 2026 SRA snapshot. A US-admitted attorney can sit in a London US office on home title without ever becoming an NQ. That seat is not the Magic Circle or Quinn newly qualified solicitor product.

Home-grown NQUS class year

  1. Training contract / QWE SQE plus two years’ qualifying work experience. This is the product the sterling NQ table prices. Magic Circle mints it at volume; most US London offices mint it in small classes.
  2. Qualified-lawyer SQE Already admitted overseas. No two-year QWE. SQE1 and SQE2 still sit on the path unless an exemption applies. The firm still decides whether that hire lands on an NQ lockstep.
  3. Home title / RFL Home-state law and unreserved English-law advice. Not an NQ. Often paid on a class-year or home-title band inside the same London office that also runs a tiny training-contract class.
Four employment products that share a London postcode and are not substitutes. The NQ table prices only the first row.

Who earns the figure, and who matches it.

The earner is a newly qualified solicitor inside a London practice group. The payer is usually the partnership, or the general counsel whose budget buys that partnership. In-house NQ cash is a different line.

Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. Coverage is not the constraint on reading this table. The constraint is knowing which employment product you are pricing. The Law Society’s 2022 annual statistics report, as of 31 July 2022, put Greater London at 40.5 percent of practicing-certificate holders and the City of London at 21 percent. The 2023 report, published 23 January 2025 and as at July 2023, put in-house solicitors at 35,738, 22 percent of practicing-certificate holders, with private-practice share down to 59 percent from 69 percent in 2014. That in-house population is large. It does not post Magic Circle NQ. No later Law Society annual statistics report is cited here. Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. Incomes Data Research, on 11 December 2025, put the UK newly qualified in-house median at £44,263 and the London in-house NQ median at £57,000. London legal advisers sat at £66,934. Heads of legal sat close to £150,000 at the median, with some above £200,000. IDR also recorded “limited recruitment or retention pressure” among surveyed in-house employers in 2025. A Magic Circle NQ base of £150,000 is about 2.6 times that London in-house NQ median. Quinn’s 1 July 2026 NQ of £189,000 is about 3.3 times it. A London head of legal at IDR’s ~£150,000 median is on the same headline as a Magic Circle NQ base. Those are two different seats: one is a law-firm NQ lockstep, the other is an in-house leadership band. A head of legal at the same headline as a Magic Circle NQ is not buying the same seat.

The earner is pricing a lockstep, a training-contract factory, and a qualification rate.

  • White & Case’s own page matches Legal Cheek’s 50 London trainees, adds an 86 percent retention rate of trainees qualifying in 2025, and publishes trainee £62,000 / £67,000 against NQ £175,000, with a guaranteed Finance seat and a guaranteed overseas seat.
  • Clifford Chance’s Legal Cheek profile (accessed 11 September 2026) lists 100 training contracts, a 78 percent latest-trainee-retention box, a £12,500 PGDL grant and a £20,000 SQE grant. The 2026–27 Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey on that profile put average start at 09:25 and finish at 21:17, with a 38 percent chance of an overseas secondment and 32 percent of a client secondment.
  • White & Case 1PQE and 2PQE from 1 January 2025 sit at £185,500 and £200,000, Legal Cheek recorded on 1 August 2024. That is a published PQE ladder on one US London name. Kirkland’s UK graduate page, recruiting for 2028, publishes trainee £60,000 / £65,000 with PGDL and LLM in Legal Practice (SQE) fees paid. Legal Cheek’s 10 September 2026 census lists 15 advertised Kirkland contracts. Generic Magic Circle 1–8 PQE bands are not sourced on this page and are omitted.

The general counsel is usually matching a competitor for talent, not posting the same job.

  • Bank of England Legal describes an in-house team of around 170 colleagues and typical qualified vacancies at 1 to 4 years’ PQE, or 4+ for more senior roles — financial-services regulation, bank and payments, insolvency, litigation, employment, contracts, data protection, PRA and central-bank work.
  • Government Legal Department prices the same SRA credential at a fraction of Magic Circle NQ. The 14 April 2026 GOV.UK trainee-scheme page puts GLD and CMA London trainees at £34,695 / £39,645; HMRC London trainees at £42,631 / £42,752; and NCA London trainees at £36,057 / £45,326 plus London weighting of about £4,218. GLD FOI 24_605 (3 October 2024) puts a London Legal Officer spot at £47,541; Grade 7 lawyer capability rates from 1 April 2024 run from £61,200 (Level 1) to £67,273 (Level 3). Legal Officer is the grade for qualified lawyers with less than 3 years’ PQE.
  • The client GC whose private-equity, bank or listed-company legal budget buys the firm is paying Magic Circle and US-London NQ whether or not the company ever posts an NQ. Pirical’s 25 August 2026 leaderboard put PE and investment names in 9 of 10 top client relationships across London’s top ten firms.

05 Who mints the NQ

Magic Circle mints at volume. US London pays more for fewer.

The credential is still minted on a two-year training contract. Legal Cheek's 10 September 2026 census of advertised 2027 contracts is the measured factory, not a headcount of joiners.

Legal Cheek, on 10 September 2026, counted 2,549 advertised training contracts across 109 firms for the 2027 cycle, down from 2,593 — a 1.7 percent, 44-place drop. Twenty-five firms were up, 24 down, 60 unchanged. Linklaters moved 100 advertised places to 60; the firm’s own statement, quoted in the piece, attributed the cut to a parallel solicitor-apprenticeship pathway launched in 2023, not a hiring freeze. The SRA’s SQE Q&A, updated 28 January 2026, records that solicitor apprenticeships use SQE2 as the end-point assessment and meet the two-year QWE inside the apprenticeship. That is why some Magic Circle advertised training-contract cells can fall without a 40-person collapse in junior supply.

US London is a low-volume NQ employer that still pays more. Gibson Dunn moved advertised training contracts from 15 to 25. Milbank moved 8 to 15. Simpson Thacher opened a new program at 10. Paul Weiss moved 12 to 10. Paul Weiss’s own early-careers copy puts London and Brussels together at about 150 lawyers, up from about 30, after more than 120 associate hires — a lateral build with a vacation-scheme pipeline, not a Magic Circle-sized factory. A US class-year hire into a 10–15 person London training-contract class is not the same product as a Magic Circle NQ from a 70–100 person class.

Pirical, on 11 June 2025, put three-year London UK 100 headcount growth at 20 percent, with Corporate the fastest of the large practices at 27 percent since 2022. No 2026 Pirical edition is cited. Employer careers pages name the seats they rotate trainees through: Clifford Chance requires at least one seat in Global Financial Markets; Freshfields names commercial litigation, M&A, antitrust, employment, tax and IP on an eight-seat, three-month-rotation program; Paul Weiss names antitrust, debt finance, IP and technology, litigation, tax, restructuring, funds and M&A. Those labels are law-firm practice groups. The in-house counterpart is a Legal Counsel covering a subset of the same work for one sponsor or corporate.

06 The 2024-26 stack

The deal machine rewrote the work. It did not refill the IPO class.

Listing-rule, takeover-code and stamp-tax reform changed how ECM and public M&A associates work. They did not, on the 2025 volume print, restore a 2014-size NQ class on those desks.

How the file is doneHow many NQs the desk needs

  1. Listing rules reset Premium and standard collapsed into the Equity Shares (Commercial Companies) category. Less Class 1 circular work; more RIS disclosure and sponsor opinions on the remaining gated events.
  2. Takeover Code and stamp Dual-class and IPO disclosure notes went live in February 2026. A three-year 0.5 percent SDRT listing relief applies from 27 November 2025. Both change the ECM and public M&A file. Neither hires a US first-year.
  3. Volume is still the ceiling A 2024 rule change is necessary and not sufficient. Staff the 2026 NQ class off live IPO and bid prints, not off the existence of a new sourcebook.

The FCA’s UK Listing Rules took effect on 29 July 2024 (PS24/6, published 11 July 2024). Norton Rose Fulbright’s July 2024 note records no shareholder vote for significant (25 percent-plus) or related-party transactions, more permissive dual-class structures with a 10-year sunset for institutional holders of enhanced-vote shares, no mandatory track record or clean working-capital statement, free float still 10 percent, minimum market cap £30 million, and a sponsor still required at IPO. Takeover Code Instruments 2025/1 and 2025/2 took effect on 4 February 2026 (Panel Statement 2026/2): a new Note to Advisers on IPOs and admissions, a revised Note on Rule 9 waivers, and a dual-class framework. SDRT UK Listing Relief, published 26 November 2025, is a three-year exemption from the 0.5 percent charge on agreements to transfer securities of a company newly listed on a UK regulated market, from 27 November 2025; it does not cover the 1.5 percent depositary charge or change-of-control mergers. The Office for Budget Responsibility certified an exchequer cost of −£25 million in 2025–26, rising to −£50 million a year by 2029–31. PISCES stamp exemption (SI 2025/666) has been in force since 3 July 2025 for sandbox trades.

The volume print is thinner than the reform calendar. The Takeover Panel Annual Report for the year ended 31 March 2025 recorded 57 firm offers, aggregate value about £43 billion, 12 of them above £1 billion, 8 contractual offers and 49 schemes of arrangement. LexisNexis Market Standards, covering calendar 2025, counted 56 firm offers and aggregate value of £40.5 billion, down from £54.9 billion in 2024; 54 percent involved private equity, family offices or sovereign wealth; US bidders accounted for 19 offers and 61 percent of aggregate value. EY-Parthenon, on 6 January 2026, counted 23 London-market listings in 2025 raising £2.1 billion — a 170 percent rebound versus £777.7 million from 18 issuers in 2024, and still historically low on EY’s own telling.

Competition, FDI and disputes sit on the same junior desks. The CMA’s 13 February 2025 4Ps blog committed to a 40-working-day pre-notification KPI (from an average 65) and a 25-working-day straightforward Phase 1 target (from 35). The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 digital-markets regime came into force on 1 January 2025, with a 9-month statutory clock on Strategic Market Status investigations. The Cabinet Office National Security and Investment Act annual report for 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, published 14 July 2026, recorded 1,324 notifications, 60 call-in notices, 9 final orders and one blocked acquisition; 4.4 percent of notified acquisitions were called in; every notified call-in or clear decision sat inside the 30-working-day statutory review. More filings, fewer prohibitions. The Court of Appeal in CILEX v Mazur [2026] EWCA Civ 369 (31 March 2026) held that an unauthorized person may perform litigation tasks for and on behalf of an authorized individual who retains responsibility; the s.14 Legal Services Act offence attaches to carrying on the activity, not to performing the tasks. City dispute-resolution NQs remain the authorized persons who can carry on litigation. The judgment does not shrink NQ demand on those desks. It confirms the solicitor as the supervision node.

Bank Rate was held at 3.75 percent at the June 2026 MPC (7–2) and again in July (6–3). Higher-for-longer debt cost supports selective large deals and public-to-private work rather than a 2021-style volume boom. NQ demand in leveraged finance and PE tracks sponsor deployment, not one Bank Rate print. On the firm-structure side, A&O Shearman completed on 1 May 2024 (Reuters: nearly 4,000 lawyers, about $3.5 billion revenue, 47 offices) in the same week as the Magic Circle NQ war. Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer went live on 1 June 2025 (about 2,700 lawyers, over $2 billion revenue). Legal Business’s LB100, on 20 October 2025, put combined UK top-100 firm turnover at £40.15 billion for 2024–25. That is fee income, not associate pay, and not a London-only cut. It is the revenue pool that still funds the sterling table.

07 The London associate desk

The brief that fails is the one that treats a US first-year as an NQ.

We have worked the London associate market since 2017, for law firms and for companies that hire from the same pool. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

Of those 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 15 were NQ or 1 PQE seats, 11 were 2–4 PQE, and 7 were 5 PQE and above. 11 of the 15 NQ / 1 PQE files closed as SRA-admitted newly qualified products. 4 had been opened as “US class-year equivalent” seats and had to be rewritten as SRA NQ or PQE before they would close. Dual-qualified (New York plus England and Wales) NQ briefs numbered 9 of the 33 and ran to the long end of the 6-to-12-week window; 4 of those 9 needed a second shortlist after the first names failed the qualified-lawyer path or would not sit on a sterling PQE band.

In that same London interview cohort, 171 of 214 NQ and 1–3 PQE associates at Magic Circle, Silver Circle and US London offices, over a 24-month window, said a US first-year dollar figure was not how their firm priced them. They sit on a sterling NQ or PQE band. Of 128 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal in that same cohort, 91 said they match Magic Circle or US-London NQ cash when hiring 3–5 PQE Legal Counsel, not a day-one NQ. Of 96 US-admitted lawyers sitting in London offices in the same cohort, 74 were not SRA-admitted and were not on an NQ lockstep. Counter-offer incidence on the London associate line is 35 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days once a candidate is in play.

A general counsel at a London-booked private-equity sponsor, speaking inside that 24-month window, told us they match the Magic Circle NQ number when they hire a 4 PQE counsel, not when they post a newly qualified seat. A head of legal at a FTSE-listed financial-services group told us they stopped writing “US first-year equivalent” into London NQ briefs after a search collapsed on the SQE gate. lead="We have worked the London associate market since 2017, for law firms and for companies that hire from the same pool. An Am Law 50 London disputes group opened an NQ as “first-year equivalent to New York.” The first shortlist produced US-admitted associates on home title. None held the SRA NQ. The brief was rewritten to an SRA newly qualified solicitor; the seat filled in 9 weeks. A PE-backed portfolio company asked a head of legal to hire an in-house NQ at Magic Circle cash. The original spec produced no accepted offer in 14 weeks. The company closed a 4 PQE Legal Counsel at a different band. Completion on paper. Conversion of the original brief is the number that does not flatter the process.

  1. Name the credential SRA NQ, qualified-lawyer SQE, or home-title / RFL. If the brief says “US first-year equivalent,” it has not chosen. The table on this page will not save it.
  2. Name the buyer Partnership lockstep, client GC matching 3–5 PQE, or a true in-house NQ at the IDR median. Three buyers. Three prices. Mixing them is how a search stalls past twelve weeks.
  3. Write the sterling band PQE year, not JD class. Bonus unpublished is bonus omitted. A floating FX conversion is not an offer.

London NQ and associate pay: questions both readers ask

What is nq salary London in 2026?

On 30 September 2026 Legal Cheek put the average across 113 firms at roughly £119,000, Magic Circle newly qualified base at £150,000 (unchanged since autumn 2024), and 23 rows at £170,000 or more. Quinn Emanuel’s London NQ is £189,000 from 1 July 2026. Those are law-firm locksteps for an SRA-admitted solicitor, not a US class-year paycheck and not an in-house NQ median.

Does a US first-year salary buy a London newly qualified seat?

No. The 2026 US market scale runs from $235,000 to $455,000 by JD class year, effective 1 July 2026 after Milbank’s June lift. A London NQ is two years post-training-contract, admitted by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The dollar ladder does not purchase that title, and a floating FX conversion does not turn a first-year into an NQ.

What does solicitor salary London look like outside Magic Circle?

On Legal Cheek’s 30 September 2026 table the average across 113 firms was roughly £119,000. UK-international names on that table run from £130,000 (Travers Smith and Simmons & Simmons) to £150,000 (Macfarlanes and Baker McKenzie). National and international names run from £109,000 (Pinsent Masons) to £140,000 (DLA Piper and Norton Rose Fulbright). Those cells are published London NQ base, bonus excluded. The prior 29 September 2025 average was £118,756.

What is Magic Circle NQ salary in 2026?

The five Magic Circle firms pay a £150,000 London NQ base. Freshfields moved from £125,000 on 1 May 2024; Clifford Chance, Linklaters and A&O Shearman matched that month; Slaughter and May completed the alignment on 1 September 2024. Legal Cheek’s 30 September 2026 table still prints all five at £150,000. Clifford Chance’s own careers page still publishes £56,000 / £61,000 / £150,000 for the 2028–29 training-contract intake.

How does associate salary London compare with in-house pay?

IDR’s December 2025 London in-house NQ median was £57,000 — about 2.6 times below Magic Circle NQ base. No 2026 IDR edition was located. London legal advisers sat at a £66,934 median; heads of legal close to £150,000 at the median. A general counsel matching City NQ cash is usually hiring a 3–5 PQE Legal Counsel, not posting a day-one in-house NQ at the firm lockstep.

How long does a London associate search take?

Sartori’s London associate desk typically fills in 6 to 12 weeks, with a median 12 working days from offer to signature. An Am Law 50 London disputes group filled a rewritten SRA newly qualified seat in 9 weeks. Counter-offer incidence on the London associate line is 35 percent. Completion on 33 searches over three years was 93 percent.

Legal Cheek's 30 September 2026 table measures published or confirmed London NQ base across 113 firms; the publisher's word for the average is roughly £119,000, bonus excluded. The 29 September 2025 census (average £118,756; 18 US offices above £170,000) is the previous edition. Quinn's 1 July 2026 ladder is firm-announced and is not a Firms Most List row. The US $235,000-$455,000 scale is the Milbank/market class-year map, not a London table. SRA population figures are England and Wales, not London-only. Law Society in-house and Greater London shares are vintage July 2023 and 31 July 2022. Pirical counts Lawyer UK 100 tracked lawyers as of 11 June 2025. IDR medians are an employer survey, December 2025. No 2026 IDR, Pirical or Law Society annual statistics edition is cited.

Sartori maps lawyer coverage globally at 1,480,000+ profiles and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The US class-year table lives on the 2026 BigLaw associate scale. In-house bands live on the 2026 in-house salary map and the private-practice versus in-house guide. For how the associate desk runs a mandate, see associate recruiting.
