Clifford Chance Salary 2026: London NQ versus US class-year cash

A 2026 wrong match is a second search. London newly qualified base is £150,000 on the firm's own careers page; New York associate advertisements start at $260,000. The London bonus grid is not public. US associates received a Cravath-scale bonus paid 15 January 2026. A general counsel who books those figures as one paycheck pays twice.

A wrong match is a second search.

A 2026 Clifford Chance salary is not one paycheck. It is a London newly qualified base frozen in 2024 sitting next to a New York advertisement and a US-only bonus machine. Pick the ledger you think you are hiring.

Ledger 01 · London NQ Sterling base, no published bonus.

The firm’s London Training Contract page, accessed 11 September 2026, lists newly qualified lawyer at £150,000 — the same figure Legal Cheek still prints on the 2026/27 card. Bonus is not on that page. £150,000 base. Bonus unpublished.

Sartori maps roughly 30,000 lawyers in London. That is coverage of the market a general counsel is hiring from, not a second interview count. Every public figure is cited below.

Open the firm's own pages before you write a requisition. London prints three sterling bases. New York prints dollar ranges because a city ordinance forces the band. The US bonus match is a memo. Everything else on a lockstep fantasy grid is a blank.

Clifford Chance LLP employs the London trainee, newly qualified solicitor and associate. Clifford Chance US LLP employs the New York, Washington and Houston associate. The about page, accessed 11 September 2026, states 2,800+ lawyers, 34 offices and 22 countries. The FY25 statutory accounts, as the Law Gazette reported on 5 January 2026, put worldwide lawyer headcount at 2,859 at 30 April 2025, with 543 members. Band the lawyer count as about 2,800 to 2,900. Do not treat the marketing line and the accounts line as two censuses.

The earner reads the table as a paycheck. The general counsel reads it as a matching problem. Clifford Chance PEP was £2.3 million for the year ended 30 April 2026, up 9 percent, on the 22 July 2026 results note; the same note translated PEP to US$3.1 million. That average is not what an associate takes home, and it is not what a chief legal officer should write into an in-house offer. It is the partnership profit that funds both ledgers.

Click a column header to re-rank. Newly qualified London cash is a single published base. New York cash is a product-seat range with preferred class years, not an eight-rung lockstep the firm has released. Sources sit at the bottom of this page.

Using only the firm’s own FY26 pair — £2.6 billion of revenue stated as US$3.5 billion on the 22 July 2026 note — the London newly qualified base of £150,000 translates at that same ratio to about US$202,000. That is an exchange-rate identity from the results note. It is not a published dollar salary for a London NQ, and it is not a New York offer. Leave London in sterling and US cash in dollars unless you are showing the gap.

03 The clocks

London froze. The US bonus machine did not.

A general counsel matching 2026 cash is standing on two calendars. One stopped on 1 May 2024. The other paid a US-only bonus in January 2026 and then watched the rest of the US market raise base pay on 1 July.

Legal Cheek reported on 29 May 2024 that Clifford Chance raised newly qualified pay to £150,000 effective 1 May 2024, described as an additional £25,000 or 20 percent, matching Freshfields and Linklaters. Trainee pay moved from 1 September 2024 to £56,000 in year one and £61,000 in year two. Those three numbers are still the 2026 careers-page figures. The Clifford Chance NQ salary did not reset with the US summer.

Above the Law, on 26 November 2025, reported a memo to US associates matching the Cravath scale complete with Milbank summer bonuses, paid 15 January 2026. The ABA Journal listing of 25–26 November 2025 flagged the scale as for US associates. Legal Business, on 27 November 2025, wrote that Clifford Chance and Linklaters would match Cravath year-end and special bonuses across US offices, not for those working in the UK and elsewhere; class of 2018 senior associates would receive $140,000 as $115,000 year-end plus $25,000 special. A US associate and a London solicitor now have different bonus machines.

Milbank announced, on 2 June 2026, a new US associate scale effective 1 July 2026. Legal Business tabulated it the next day: class of 2025–26 at $235,000; class of 2018 at $455,000. Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard lists Milbank as first mover and a long matcher list. Clifford Chance does not appear on that raise table. New York advertisements still used $260,000 to $450,000 bands that sit on the prior US scale’s third-year through senior rungs, not on a published Clifford Chance class-year memo.

New York City’s pay-transparency rule, in force from 1 November 2022 under the NYC Commission on Human Rights, is why Clifford Chance US LLP prints dollar ranges at all. Foley & Lardner, on 17 February 2026, restated N.Y.C. Admin. Code § 8-107(32): employers with four or more employees must state a good-faith annual salary or hourly wage range in job advertisements for work performed in New York City. London Private Funds Group and Private Equity associate advertisements in the same check set did not print a band. A company comparing a London NQ to a New York posting is comparing a published UK base to a statute-forced US range, not two equally disclosed locksteps.

04 Two readers

Who earns the figure, and who has to match it.

The associate earns the table. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal is usually buying the same product skill on the other side of the deal — and that is where a wrong match is paid twice.

Across 750 structured interviews with London partners and counsel, 96 of 140 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at London corporates, private-equity sponsors and asset managers, over a 24-month window, told Sartori they had written a London newly qualified base and a US advertised band onto the same requisition as if they were one cash number. That is the company-side error this page is for.

A chief legal officer at a FTSE-scale consumer company told us, in that same cohort, that the team had treated the London newly qualified figure as “the number” and a New York funds advertisement as the same hire. The London figure was treated as the number. The New York advertisement was treated as the same hire. It was not.

The associate and the partner are paid by the firm, on two ledgers, not by the company that later tries to hire them.

  • London juniors sit on a training contract with four six-month rotations and a 200-point seat-preference system. At least one seat is in Global Financial Markets or in one of five Global Product Groups: Capital Markets, Debt Finance, Project Development & Finance, Restructuring & Insolvency, or Structured Finance.
  • US associates sit in New York, Washington or Houston. The USA page states 400+ lawyers across those three offices. Preferred class years on postings start in the mid-2010s. These are not newly qualified seats.
  • Partners read PEP. FY26 PEP was £2.3 million. The Law Gazette, on 5 January 2026, reported that the highest-paid member in the FY25 accounts took £7.17 million. Average and top-of-lockstep are different sentences.

The company-side matcher is buying a product skill, not a Magic Circle brand, and often with a stable headcount budget.

  • Corporate legal departments sit opposite the M&A and antitrust workstreams. On 31 March 2026 the firm advised a FTSE 100 consumer-goods seller on a US$45 billion foods combination; the company deal team was led by a chief legal officer and group company secretary and a global head of M&A and treasury.
  • Asset managers and annuity writers buy funds, financial-regulatory and financing advice. A 12 February 2026 recommended cash offer of £9.9 billion for a UK listed asset manager was anticipated to complete by scheme of arrangement. A 14 July 2025 private-credit partnership put an annuity writer onto a US origination platform.
  • Sponsors and lenders buy PE, funds, debt finance and project development. The Association of Corporate Counsel’s 2026 Chief Legal Officers Survey (1,049 participants, 20 industries, 43 countries) found 63 percent of CLOs expect legal-department headcount to remain stable and 48 percent use outside counsel as a regulatory pressure valve. Many companies will keep buying this firm’s time rather than clone the associate table in-house — and will still hire the occasional alumna or alumnus onto the payroll.

The 2026 ACC survey also found that 84 percent of chief legal officers report to the CEO and that 34 percent hold the CLO title. Trade and tariffs (30 percent) and AI regulation (24 percent) were the fastest-growing regulatory concerns in that survey. None of those percentages is this firm's associate cash. They are why a head of legal is in the market for the people this table prices, and why a failed in-house match is paid on the company ledger.

The London figure was treated as the number. The New York advertisement was treated as the same hire.
On a mixed requisition
05 The product

The seat is a finance-product solicitor, not a generic hire.

Clifford Chance associate salary on a New York posting is a named desk with a credential gate. Clifford Chance solicitor salary in London is an SQE-trained product-group NQ. Mixing those two on one job description is the second-search mechanism.

The London Private Funds Group, on an expired mid-senior associate posting, described itself as eight partners, three counsel, thirty associates and eight trainees, working closely with Luxembourg and with sister offices in New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Paris, Munich and Madrid. That is a funds-formation factory. It is not a general-counsel seat, and it is not a New York class-of-2017 funds associate by another name.

The London private-equity associate posting stated that the group comprises over 700 private equity lawyers across offices and that, since January 2025, the PE group had advised on 40 deals across 17 countries with a total value of US$74 billion. Complementary practices named on that page: acquisition finance, capital markets, funds, regulatory. The in-house buyer of that work is a sponsor general counsel or a portfolio-company head of legal, not a corporate secretary looking for a newly qualified generalist.

The corporate page describes clients including more than half of the Global Fortune 500 and a platform of 200 partners and a further 500 lawyers. Treat those as the firm’s description of the M&A platform, not as a 2026 headcount audit. Banks are both clients and secondment hosts: the banks sector page notes lawyers seconded into financial institutions, seeing in-house counsel problems from the inside. Legal Cheek’s 2026/27 card, drawn from a survey of over 2,000 trainees and junior associates, puts the chance of a client secondment at 32 percent and an international secondment at 38 percent. The company legal team is a host, then later a hirer of alumni. It is not the employer that posts the £150,000.

Credential gates on the two cash ledgers. London figures follow the Solicitors Regulation Authority SQE route and the firm’s own training-contract page. New York figures follow 22 NYCRR 520 and the firm’s US postings.
Gate London NQ solicitor New York associate (postings)
Degree Undergraduate 2:1; PGDL commendation if non-QLD J.D. from an ABA-approved school; asset finance also accepts a foreign degree plus a US LL.M.
Professional exam SQE1 and SQE2, first attempt; CC Plus even if the LPC is already held New York bar admission, or ability to waive in on some finance postings
Qualifying work Two-year training contract; four seats; at least one Global Product Group or GFM seat Preferred class years, often 2015–2023; prior peer-firm experience on several ads
Grants (London card) PGDL grant £12,500; SQE grant £20,000 (Legal Cheek, London) Not a London training-contract path
Who cannot walk in A US J.D. without an SRA path A London NQ solicitor without New York bar eligibility

The SRA SQE route page (August 2025) requires a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and character and suitability. The SRA LPC transitional page, updated 25 November 2025, keeps an LPC-route admission deadline of 31 December 2032, with most LPC providers phasing out in 2025/26. Clifford Chance requires SQE even of LPC holders. New York eligibility under 22 NYCRR 520.3 is a different door.

06 Why the seats cost this

Mega-deals, private credit, and a US scale race pay for the table.

The cash is expensive because the work is expensive. H1 2026 mega-deal M&A, compounding private-credit AUM, a rewritten UK listing regime, and a three-year US build are the demand stack. They price mid-to-senior product seats first, not a larger autumn NQ class.

Partnership promotions effective 1 May 2026, counted from the firm's 30 April 2026 release. London nine, United States six, rest of Europe nine, Asia-Pacific four. Product labels on the same list were led by Corporate Transactions and Advisory, then Private Equity.

Clifford Chance, 30 April 2026; Global Legal Post, 30 April 2026.

Reuters, in a 1 July 2026 recap citing LSEG, put global announced M&A at US$2.8 trillion in the first half of 2026, up 48 percent year on year, the highest first half in LSEG records beginning in 1980. Deal count fell 9 percent to about 24,000. Forty-seven deals above US$10 billion totaled more than US$1.3 trillion. Clifford Chance’s own FY26 note sits on that cycle: year-to-date M&A and PE advice of US$300 billion, including seven $10 billion-plus deals (Mergermarket, cited by the firm on 22 July 2026). That volume prices mid-to-senior corporate, PE, debt-finance and antitrust associates. It does not, by itself, enlarge the autumn newly qualified class.

Preqin, on 16 October 2025, forecast global alternatives AUM of US$32 trillion by 2030, with private-credit strategies projected at US$4.5 trillion by 2030 and infrastructure AUM approaching US$3 trillion. Moody’s Global Private Credit 2026 Outlook, dated 2 February 2026, said private-credit AUM would exceed US$2 trillion in 2026 and approach US$4 trillion by 2030, with mix shifting toward asset-backed finance, data-infrastructure credit, and evergreen, NAV and rated-fund structures. Those are the London Private Funds Group and New York Funds and Asset Management seats, plus debt finance, fund finance, and the insurer-credit partnership work the firm announced with an annuity writer on 14 July 2025.

Two London public-M&A rules keep schemes and sponsor work on the book. The FCA’s PS24/6 UK Listing Rules came into force on 29 July 2024, replacing premium and standard segments with a commercial-companies category. The Takeover Panel’s RS 2024/1, published 6 November 2024 and implemented 3 February 2025, refocused the Code on companies registered in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man whose securities are or were recently admitted to trading there. The £9.9 billion Nuveen offer for Schroders, announced 12 February 2026, was anticipated to be implemented by scheme of arrangement. A New York financing lateral on the bidder side is not a London NQ.

The US Department of the Treasury’s outbound-investment final rule, issued 28 October 2024 and effective 2 January 2025, puts prohibitions and notifications on US-person investments in semiconductors, quantum and AI involving China, Hong Kong and Macau. FY25 results listed CFIUS and trade-controls laterals among New York, Houston and Washington hires. Houston itself opened on 5 June 2023 with ten partners, part of a 300+ lawyer global energy and infrastructure team; Reuters on 1 May 2024 put that office at 28 lawyers. FY26 results put Houston at 19 partners and 47 fee earners, from 15 and 41 a year earlier. Project Development & Finance and tax-equity associates in Houston and New York are the residue of that build.

FY26 constant-currency regional revenue change, from the 22 July 2026 results note. Asia Pacific led on a capital-markets resurgence. Americas grew 9 percent in the year; US revenue was up 65 percent over three years.

Clifford Chance FY26 results, 22 July 2026.

Competitive structure changed on 1 May 2024, when Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling completed the combination as A&O Shearman, with nearly 4,000 lawyers and combined revenues about US$3.5 billion, Reuters reported that day. The same day, Reuters put Clifford Chance at 420 US lawyers including 116 partners, with 29 US senior hires since the start of 2023. City A.M., on 22 July 2026, put US partners at 156. FY25 had said 122. New York attorney headcount was up 22 percent since the May 2024 move into Two Manhattan West, including 18 new partners, on the FY26 note. Of 28 promotions and 25 lateral partners in FY26, 15 of those laterals-and-promotions were in the US. London NQ pay is the UK cost of keeping the trainee machine while PEP is steered toward US competitiveness.

Asia Pacific revenue rose 26 percent in FY26 on a capital-markets resurgence. The same results note said the firm advised on four of the ten largest Hong Kong IPOs of 2025 by funds raised, more than US$5.5 billion aggregate proceeds (Dealogic, January 2026, cited by the firm). The 1 May 2026 partnership list included Capital Markets seats in Paris and Tokyo. That is ECM demand, not a reason to copy a New York advertised floor onto a London NQ offer.

FY26 revenue was £2.6 billion, up 9 percent; partnership profit £1.05 billion, up 11 percent. Since FY23 the firm stated +$638 million of revenue and +$295 million of profit, including the 65 percent increase in US revenue, with its own translation to US$3.5 billion of revenue and US$1.4 billion of profit. AI adoption was stated above 90 percent, with continued investment in technology-enabled delivery and new offices in Paris, Houston, London and expanded New York. Great Portland Estates, on 25 March 2026, reported practical completion of 2 Aldermanbury Square — 321,650 square feet, pre-let entirely to the firm. Building, on 27 May 2026, put the move by 2028, leaving Canary Wharf, with a £150 million fit-out. The relocation does not change newly qualified cash. It does keep real-estate and workplace files on a clock that runs past 2026.

07 The mandate

We have closed the London associate searches. Mixed ledgers reopen them.

Sartori & Partners has worked the London associate market for more than 10 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches, with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. The files that mixed sterling and dollars ran past that window.

Of those 33 closed London associate searches, 21 were firm-side laterals — Magic Circle London or US-office product desks — and 12 were company-side, matching a finance-product lawyer onto a corporate, sponsor, asset-manager or insurer payroll. Of the 21 firm-side files, 14 were Global Financial Markets, funds, private equity or project-development-and-finance seats. Of the 12 company-side files, 7 sat at asset managers, PE or infrastructure sponsors, or annuity writers. Subsets sit inside the 33.

Nine of the 33 were re-specified after the first offer pack because a sterling newly qualified base and a dollar class-year band had been written as one cash number. Those nine ran past the typical 6-to-12-week window. That is the finding that does not flatter us: the miss is often already in the brief we are handed, and we still take too long to force the split. Counter-offer incidence on the same London associate line is 35 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days when the ledger is clean.

Five of the 12 company-side searches required a credential rewrite after the first specification — an SQE solicitor written against a New York-bar posting, or a US class year written against a London training-contract seat. In the same interview cohort, 41 of 72 Magic Circle and US-desk associates who had sat on a Global Financial Markets or funds seat said a company interview had asked them to map their post-qualification years to a US class year. PQE is not class year. The mapping is the tell.

A head of legal at a private-equity-backed infrastructure platform said the first specification had to be torn up once the New York project-finance posting was read beside the London careers page. The first specification had to be torn up once the two pages were read together. The company had budgeted a London newly qualified solicitor against a New York project-development-and-finance associate whose advertisement opened at $390,000 and asked for six years of US energy credit work. That is not a compensation conversation. It is a different job.

Two anonymized composites, presented as Sartori engagements, show the pattern without naming a client.

A listed consumer-goods company asked for “a Clifford Chance NQ” to sit in a New York funds-formation seat beside a global head of M&A. The public New York funds advertisement required a J.D., New York bar, and preferred class years 2017–2022, in a $310,000–$435,000 band. The London careers page offered a newly qualified solicitor at £150,000 with no published bonus. We closed a rewritten in-house funds counsel search in 11 weeks after the credential gate was put on the page. The first specification was not a search. It was a brand.

A PE-backed infrastructure platform budgeted London newly qualified cash against a New York project-finance associate. The firm’s own senior project-finance posting advertised $435,000–$450,000 for preferred class years 2015–2018. We reopened the file, split the requisition into a London mid-PQE projects solicitor and a US-bar project-finance counsel, and filled the company seat on the second specification. Time-to-fill on the second run sat inside the 6-to-12-week band. The first specification had already consumed the opening weeks of the clock.

We cannot price London all-in cash for a general counsel who asks. The bonus grid is not public, and our mandate telemetry does not invent one. That blank is a fact about the market, not a gap we fill with a round number. If you need a private read on a specific offer — London or New York, associate or in-house — that conversation is the product. The associate recruiting desk and the in-house and general counsel desk are the two doors; pick the payroll the hire will actually sit on.

Quarterly surveys have run since 2019 across the global research program, which maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. The London findings on this page come from the interview cohort and the 33-file telemetry, not from a second city-level survey invented for the URL. For the US market ladder a New York hire is priced against, see the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale — and do not paste it onto this firm unless this firm publishes a match.

08 The record

Firm pages, results notes, and the rules that split the ledgers.

London cash is the careers page and the Legal Cheek card. US cash is the firm's own New York advertisements and the November 2025 bonus match. PEP, promotions and headcount are the results notes and the FY25 accounts. The US market first-year base is Milbank's, and this firm is not on that table.

London cash is the firm careers page and the Legal Cheek 2026/27 card. US cash is Clifford Chance US LLP New York advertisements and the 26 November 2025 bonus match reported by Above the Law, the ABA Journal and Legal Business. PEP, revenue, US headcount and deal volumes are the 22 July 2026 and 23 July 2025 results notes, City A.M. of 22 July 2026, and the Law Gazette report of the FY25 accounts (5 January 2026). The US market first-year base is Milbank's 2 June 2026 announcement; Clifford Chance does not appear on Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard. SQE and LPC rules are the SRA. New York bar eligibility is 22 NYCRR 520. NYC pay transparency is the City Commission on Human Rights, in force 1 November 2022.

Compensation figures are general information, not financial, career or legal advice. Actual pay varies by office, class year or PQE, hours, bonus eligibility and the employing entity. London PQE steps, London bonus amounts, and any Clifford Chance match of the 1 July 2026 US base raise are not public and are not estimated here.

Common questions

Clifford Chance pay: questions from both sides of the table

What is the Clifford Chance salary for a London NQ in 2026?

London newly qualified base is £150,000 on the firm’s 2026 careers page, with no published bonus. That figure is the 1 May 2024 raise, still on the 2026 card. Trainee bases are £56,000 and £61,000. A New York associate advertisement is a different ledger.

Does Clifford Chance publish a US class-year associate scale?

No. Clifford Chance US LLP prints advertised ranges, not a class-year memo. New York postings in 2026 ran from $260,000 to $450,000 by product. The firm does not appear on Above the Law’s 1 July 2026 Milbank raise table.

What is Clifford Chance PEP for 2026?

£2.3 million for the year ended 30 April 2026, up 9 percent, on the firm’s 22 July 2026 results. Partnership profit was £1.05 billion. PEP is an average, not a personal paycheck.

Did US associates at Clifford Chance match Cravath bonuses?

Yes, for US associates only. A 26 November 2025 memo matched the Cravath/Milbank scale, paid 15 January 2026. UK seats were excluded. Class of 2018+ combined cash was $140,000.

Can a general counsel hire a London NQ into a New York funds seat?

Not on the face of the New York advertisements. Those seats ask for a J.D., New York bar admission, and preferred class years starting in the mid-2010s. A London NQ is an SQE solicitor.

How long does Sartori take to fill a London associate seat?

Typical timeline is 6 to 12 weeks on the London associate line, with a 93 percent completion rate across 33 closed searches in three years. Files that mixed sterling and dollar ledgers ran past that window.

Matching the wrong Clifford Chance ledger?

If you are a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal writing a requisition against this table — or an associate checking the published figure — we will split the ledger before we open a search. Confidential, no obligation.
