Debevoise Salary 2026: The Printed Table, Not the Lockstep

On 11 September 2026 the firm's own careers page still printed a US starting salary of $225,000. The last Debevoise-attributed bonus table is 21 November 2025. London NQ is £173,100. Firmwide PEP broke $6 million. Reading those cells off the Cravath lockstep or a single New York PEP paycheck is the discard this page exists to stop — for the associate who earns the figure and the general counsel who has to match it.

The 2026 Debevoise salary is not the market lockstep.

On 11 September 2026 the employer's own Compensation & Benefits page still listed a US starting salary of $225,000. Sartori maps about 67,000 lawyers in New York. Partner economics that are public are a firmwide $6 million PEP average, not a New York paycheck, and London pays in sterling on a separate lockstep.

What a Debevoise associate salary actually prints in 2026

The careers page still posts a US starting salary of $225,000. That is a floor, not a class-year grid, and the last public bonus match sits on a different date from the market raise this firm has not joined.

Debevoise’s Compensation & Benefits page, accessed 11 September 2026, lists “Salary - starting at $225,000” plus discretionary bonuses, four weeks’ vacation and a US 401(k). It does not publish a class-year ladder. That is the only US associate base figure the employer itself currently posts. Biglaw Investor’s historical table records the 2025 and early-2026 market scale as $225,000 for a first-year through $435,000 for an eighth-year, then the post-Milbank 2026 scale as $235,000–$455,000. This firm’s public starting cell matches the pre-July 2026 floor, not the post-July floor. The market-wide lockstep is owned by a sibling page; the cell that belongs here is the employer line.

Milbank moved first on 2 June 2026, as Above the Law recorded that day, with a class-of-2026 / 2025 base of $235,000 and a class-of-2018 base of $455,000, effective 1 July 2026; McDermott matched the same day. The PDF hosted on that site and signed 2 June 2026 is that first-mover memorandum, not a Debevoise document. Above the Law’s running 2026 raise scorecard, last updated in the page through 31 August 2026, lists dozens of matchers and does not include Debevoise. A 2026 summer special-bonus match is also absent from that scorecard; Milbank announced a third consecutive summer special on 27 July 2026. A complete Debevoise class-year US base scale for the second half of 2026 is therefore not public. It is omitted, not estimated. The June 2026 market raise is a different document.

Source: Above the Law, 21 November 2025, with the hours-gate and match date on the 2025 bonus tracker. Combined figures are derived, not a leaked all-in schedule. Because no class-year US base grid is public, this page does not print an all-in associate cash column.

The laterals FAQ, accessed 11 September 2026, says the firm is a lockstep firm, salaries are reviewed in January of each year, and the discretionary bonus is generally determined in December, with mid-year joiners prorated. It also says the firm does not have fixed chargeable hours required for associates, and that associates should aim to achieve approximately 2,000 hours per year including pro bono. The 2025 bonus tracker’s hours gate of “None” is the same idea in a different sentence. For a general counsel reading an offer, that is the opposite of many in-house bonus plans, which gate cash on a performance year. Earliest partnership consideration is the eighth year. Special-associate pay, the benefits page notes, is determined on an individual basis; this firm does not publish a counsel scale.

US intake is a 2L summer-associate machine, not an open 1L or off-cycle bulk hire. The firm’s 1L message states that it does not hire 1Ls for the summer program, that associates have almost always spent a summer there, and that it looks only to a limited extent outside that class. Three formal US programs sit in New York, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. Summer Associate FAQs put the 2025 weekly rate at $4,330, with a minimum of eight weeks; fifty-two times $4,330 is $225,160, the weekly equivalent of the published starting base. Ten to twelve summer associates generally do office stints. Ninety-six percent of 2025 summer associates worked on pro bono, on the US students page. Judicial clerks are generally placed with their graduating class, receive a bonus and one year of credit for each year of clerkship, and the offer generally remains open during the clerkship. Those are process facts. They are not a substitute for an unpublished class-year grid.

The 2026 cells this firm has actually printed, against the reading this page rejects. Dates sit in the as-of column; the last column is the discard, not a second scale.

03 The sterling machine

London is a different pay machine, not a currency conversion.

The City seat pays in pounds on a trainee-to-NQ lockstep reviewed in January. It is not a New York class year with an FX overlay, and London revenue per lawyer is not the firmwide PEP cell.

Legal Cheek, on 30 January 2025, reported the London NQ / 1-year PQE base at £173,100, 3 percent above £168,000, with 2-year PQE at £180,800 and 3-year PQE at £200,000. LawCareers.net, on 4 February 2025, repeated those NQ and PQE figures. Law360 UK, on 28 January 2025, put the NQ figure at just more than £173,000, or $215,056 at then-prevailing exchange rates, on a firm statement. Legal Cheek’s live firm profile, accessed 11 September 2026 and labeled as the 2026-27 survey wave, still lists NQ at £173,100. A 2026 London NQ revision above that cell is not on those pages. London is a different pay machine, not a currency conversion of the dollar grid.

Trainee cash on that live profile is first-year £60,000 and second-year £65,000, with PGDL and SQE grants of £20,000 each. The firm’s own London careers page still listed first-year trainee £55,000, second-year £60,000 and a £15,000 maintenance grant when accessed; those older rungs are stale against the Legal Cheek 2026-27 cells, and this page uses the later figures for 2026 trainee cash. The same careers page is the process source: all trainees come from vacation schemes; open days in February and March draw up to 100 candidates; about 40 to 45 vacation-scheme places; academic gate at least a 2(i) and 144 UCAS points; four six-month seats with a mandatory litigation and arbitration seat; second-year trainees attend LAUNCH in New York; the firm currently expects to hire ten trainees each year. Legal Cheek lists 10 training contracts and latest retention of 90 percent, against 100 percent in the 30 January 2025 article. Annual target hours: none.

London office revenue in the two years Legal Business printed as a series. The 2025 print is why a New York PEP cell does not price the City seat.

Legal Business, 7 April 2026.

Legal Business, on 7 April 2026, put 2025 London revenue at $267.9 million, up 41.2 percent from $189.8 million; London revenue per lawyer at $1.49 million, up 28.4 percent; London lawyer headcount at 178, from 164; and London partners at 29, from 30. The American Lawyer’s 2 April 2026 lead put London revenue at $267.92 million, up 41 percent, and quoted the presiding partner calling London the second-biggest office, with “150 lawyers,” nine offices, and selective City investment rather than a copy of other US firms’ build-outs. Those two headcount figures are not averaged here. Band London 2025 lawyer headcount as 150–180 depending on source and date; Legal Business is the dated series (164 to 178). The laterals FAQ still says “around 100 lawyers in London”; that sentence is stale against both 2025 prints and is not used as a 2026 headcount.

The London office page, accessed 11 September 2026, says about 30 percent of London lawyers hold US qualifications, more than 75 percent are English-qualified, and 10 percent are dual-qualified in England and the US. That mix is a hiring gate, not a salary conversion. Dual-qualified lawyers still sit the New York bar via Court of Appeals Rule 520.6 if they need a US ticket; the New York State Board of Law Examiners eligibility page puts the primary US route at graduation from an ABA-approved law school under Rule 520.3. The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s SQE route, dated August 2025, is a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and suitability checks. The firm’s preferred PGDL and SQE provider is the University of Law at Moorgate. Barristers are considered. UK Border Agency work-permit assistance is described for training contracts; vacation-scheme visa sponsorship is not.

Legal Cheek’s 2026-27 survey of more than 2,000 UK trainees and junior associates records a Debevoise average start of 09:40 and finish of 21:55, no annual target hours, 22 days’ annual leave, a 25 percent chance of a secondment abroad and an 8 percent client secondment. Those start and finish times are self-reported averages, not a billable-hour audit. The firm rule remains the laterals FAQ: no fixed chargeable-hour requirement, aim of about 2,000 hours including pro bono. London juniors in that survey wave describe heavy, team-variable hours and no formal billable target. That texture is not a payroll file, and it is not converted into a US class-year number.

London is a different pay machine, not a currency conversion of the dollar grid.

04 The figure that is not a salary

Debevoise PEP broke $6 million. That is not a partner paycheck.

A partner paycheck at this firm is not a public cell. What is public is a firmwide PEP average, a London RPL that sits below it, an equity lockstep that was kept, and a nonequity tier whose dollars were never published.

The American Lawyer, on 2 April 2026, put 2025 gross revenue at $1.77 billion, up 8.8 percent, a new high, and quoted the presiding partner calling 2024 a big comeback year. Legal Business, on 7 April 2026, printed firmwide revenue of $1.76 billion, up 8.7 percent — a rounding difference against the ALM $1.77 billion / 8.8 percent print, reported here as two publishers, not collapsed. Net income was $904.9 million, up 12.5 percent. PEP broke $6 million, up 12.5 percent from $5.3 million. ALM contemporaneous figures put equity partners at about 151, flat; net income at $904.89 million; lawyer headcount at 944; and revenue per lawyer at $1.87 million, up 7.3 percent. A $6 million PEP cell is not a partner salary.

The 2024 cells behind that step-up: Above the Law, on 21 November 2025, cited 2024 gross revenue of $1,623,000,000. Above the Law, on 9 June 2025, cited 2024 PEP of $5,336,000 and ranked the firm 33rd by gross revenue. Legal Business put 2024 London revenue at $189.8 million, up 12.9 percent. 2024 RPL, 2024 net income and 2024 FTE lawyer count were not captured on a page and are omitted.

That $6 million PEP sits above the 2025 Am Law 100 mean and below the New York elite cluster that tops the open table. David Lat, on 30 April 2026, summarizing the 2026 Am Law 100 for the 2025 year, put Am Law 100 PEP at $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent; RPL at $1.39 million, up 8.7 percent; gross revenue at $178.95 billion, up 13.0 percent; and headcount at 128,868, up 4 percent. Top PEP included Wachtell at $12.152 million, Kirkland at $11.121 million, Davis Polk at $9.800 million, and Milbank 10th at $7.620 million. Cravath’s 2025 RPL printed at $2.255 million, down 0.04 percent. This firm’s $1.87 million RPL sits below that Cravath cell and above the $1.39 million Am Law 100 mean. The PEP league table belongs to partner pay at the Am Law top 50; the cells here are contrast only. London RPL of $1.49 million is why a single New York average does not price the City seat.

Am Law 100 RPL (2025 year)

Average revenue per lawyer across the Am Law 100, up 8.7 percent.

David Lat, 30 April 2026, citing Am Law ↗

Bloomberg Law, on 9 June 2025 at 4:18 p.m. UTC, reported that the partnership voted a second tier that will primarily pay in salaries rather than equity, and that Am Law 200 nonequity partners were 30,709 of 62,103 partners in 2024. Above the Law, the same day, quoting The American Lawyer, wrote that the partnership voted in spring overwhelmingly to keep lockstep equity pay while adding a narrowly tailored nonequity tier effective 1 July 2025 with that year’s promotions, and that the presiding partner described the tier as a relatively small percentage of the overall partnership. The American Lawyer, on 2 April 2026, said the firm created the nonequity tier last July, adding about three lawyers to the position by the end of the year; total partnership count was up 1.8 percent; the presiding partner said the firm will have more in the coming year and that the program has allowed the firm to retain some people and attract some people. No public dollar band for those nonequity seats exists on the pages. A nonequity partner is not paid the $6 million PEP cell. The laterals FAQ still describes an all-equity partnership and international counsel as the nonequity analogue; that copy is stale after the June 2025 vote and is not used as a 2026 partnership-pay fact.

Headcount is a band, not a census. Chambers Global 2026, firm-supplied, says more than 900 lawyers and nine offices. The June 2026 recruiting PDF says over 980 lawyers in nine offices across three continents, with 22 percent of lawyers outside the United States, and that over 90 percent of partners are ranked in one or more of the leading legal directories. The New York office page says more than 600 lawyers. NYBizDaily, on 8 July 2026, restated over 900 lawyers with the 16-partner class. Legal 500 United States staffing, undated, lists 159 partners and 807 other fee-earners — fee-earners, not a lawyer census. Band: 900–980 lawyers worldwide in 2025 through mid-2026; New York 600+; lawyers outside the US about one in five. Washington, D.C., opened 1982, more than 40 lawyers and 11 partners. San Francisco, opened 2021, more than 30 lawyers and six partners on the US students page. Those three cities are the US summer-hire seats. There is no published US summer program in Paris, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Hong Kong or Shanghai.

Firm news, on 21 May 2026, named 16 new partners effective 1 July 2026. Anonymized seats in that class: New York insurance and financial institutions, tax, investment management, M&A / private equity / Latin America, executive compensation, banking; London investment management, private fund transactions, white collar and sanctions, M&A, antitrust and FDI, finance; Washington, D.C. banking / FIG / national security, sanctions and AML; San Francisco M&A; Hong Kong and Shanghai investment management and secondaries. The US students page states that 45 percent of lawyers promoted to partner since 2016 have been women. That is a recruiting claim, not a 2026 PEP split. The American Lawyer 2026 US A-List, announced by the firm on 12 August 2026, is a workplace-and-RPL composite of 20 firms; it is not a salary figure.

05 The desks behind the cash

The work that funds these cells is funds, insurance and sanctions, not a generic New York associate pool.

The 16-partner class maps the desks a general counsel is actually matching. Headline buyout fundraising is down an eighth consecutive rolling-twelve; continuation funds, insurance M&A and outbound-investment rules are what keep mid-senior seats busy.

The funds and investment-management page, accessed 11 September 2026, says more than 150 corporate lawyers worldwide devote all of their time to fund formation, across New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Private fund transactions names sponsors, secondary investors, limited partners, sovereign wealth funds, insurance companies and pension-plan investors as clients, and puts co-investment volume at on average approximately 100 transactions per year. Those are law-firm seats billed to sponsors, LPs and registered-fund managers — not in-house GC titles. They are why a general counsel at a pension, sovereign or insurer-as-LP pays this firm’s rates, and why the 2026 partner class included London and Hong Kong / Shanghai investment-management and private-fund-transaction promotions.

Debevoise’s 2026 Private Equity Midyear Outlook, dated 22 July 2026, put H1 2026 aggregate PE fundraising at $250 billion, 13 percent below H1 2025, with rolling 12-month PE fundraising down for an eighth consecutive quarter. Q1 2026 capital raised was 11 percent above the prior quarter but 10 percent below Q1 2025. Over half of Q1 2026 PE capital came from the ten largest funds, against a 26.8 percent decade average; 245 funds closed in Q1 2026, about half the 2021–2025 quarterly average; 91.7 percent of those that closed were larger than predecessor funds; average time to final close compressed to 15.6 months in 2025 from 18.1 months in 2024. Secondaries were 19 percent of PE fundraising in Q1 2026, the highest share on record; private-debt secondaries raised $12.2 billion in Q1 2026, more than 75 percent of that sub-strategy’s full-year 2025 total. Citing Secondaries Investor / PJT for Q1 2026, the same PDF put global secondaries at about $40 billion, down about 11 percent year on year, with 27 continuation vehicles closed in Q1 2026 against 11 a year earlier. Preqin News, on 3 June 2026, citing William Blair’s 2026 Secondary Market Report, put 2025 secondaries transaction value at $220 billion and a 2026 figure of $250 billion; PE secondaries funds raised $29.7 billion in Q1 2026 against $80.6 billion in full-year 2025; buyout exit value was $95.6 billion in Q1 2026, down 34 percent quarter on quarter, the first print below $100 billion since Q1 2024. Hiring consequence: fewer first-close fund-formation juniors relative to mid-senior private-fund-transaction, secondaries and GP-led continuation-vehicle lawyers in New York, London and Hong Kong / Shanghai through the rest of 2026.

ILPA published a Continuation Fund Disclosure Template on 27 January 2026, so limited partners can start a roll-or-sell analysis on a standardized pack. The same firm outlook reports that in May 2026 ILPA publicly recommended that continuation funds be referred to as “conflict vehicles,” and that in June 2026 ILPA updated guidance on how GPs should run those transactions. Treat the May and June language as the firm’s dated report of ILPA, not as a ILPA HTML page. The Fifth Circuit, on 5 June 2024, in No. 23-60471, vacated the SEC private-fund adviser rules; the firm’s 6 June 2024 client alert said to put comprehensive PFAR-compliance builds on hold while examinations and enforcement under the existing Advisers Act continue. That is residual 2024–26 work at mid-level and up, not a 2026 junior build-out for a dead rule.

North America insurance M&A deal count, S&P Global Market Intelligence via Carrier Management, 12 February 2026. Volume down, not a hiring freeze: the 2026 partner class still included a New York insurance and FIG seat.

Carrier Management, 12 February 2026, citing S&P GMI.

Carrier Management, on 12 February 2026, citing S&P Global Market Intelligence, put North America insurance M&A at 652 deals totaling $41.2 billion in 2025, against 674 deals and $59.3 billion in 2024. The firm’s insurance page cites S&P Global 2025 for a number-one rank in insurance-underwriter M&A deal volume for the second straight year and in insurance-broker M&A deal value; report those as the firm’s citation of S&P, not as an independently opened league-table PDF. The insurance transactional page cites pension-plan de-risking transactions totaling in excess of $30 billion of assets. The 21 January 2026 insurance outlook described 2025 global insurance deal volume as slightly down from 2024, with 2026 expectation of larger M&A, sidecars and insurance–asset-management collaboration, and private capital, sovereigns, and Japanese, European and Middle East capital as buyers.

NAIC’s 2026 Summer National Meeting in Columbus ran 11–14 August 2026. Debevoise In Depth, on 24 August 2026, recorded a Macroprudential Risk Dashboard Summary exposed on 12 August 2026 for comment through 14 September 2026, with private credit described as a significant risk; life RBC updates on reinsurance recapture referred for year-end 2027; Model #285 comments to 28 September 2026; SSAP No. 26 comments to 2 October 2026; an IMR effective-date slip from 1 January 2027 to 1 January 2028; and, from an 8 July 2026 interim, new life RBC factors for CLOs, CBOs and CDOs effective year-end 2026, including an 11.77 percent thin-tranche surcharge. The NAIC Financial Condition (E) Committee meeting summary dated 14 August 2026 corroborates the Model #285 exposure and the AI-systems evaluation-pilot update. Hiring consequence: New York insurance transactional and insurance-regulatory associates and counsel work comment letters now through October 2026, CLO RBC at year-end 2026, recapture RBC into 2027, IMR into 2028.

The PRA’s CP8/26 on funded reinsurance, published 29 April 2026, closed on 31 July 2026, with proposed implementation 1 July 2027 and a savings provision: the rules would not apply where all covered risks are fully transferred to the reinsurer on or before 30 September 2026. About 15 percent of new UK bulk-purchase-annuity business had recently been ceded via funded reinsurance, on the PRA figure in that paper. London insurance transactional, PRT, sidecar and ILS seats — NQ through partner — had a close-by-30-September-2026 structuring window, then capital work into 2027.

Treasury’s outbound investment security program took effect 2 January 2025, covering semiconductors and microelectronics, quantum information technologies and artificial intelligence, with the country of concern the PRC including Hong Kong and Macau. The America First Investment Policy memorandum of 21 February 2025 directs CFIUS use against PRC-affiliated investment in listed US sectors, seeks stronger authority over greenfield, and places the August 2023 outbound order under review with possible expansion to private equity, venture, greenfield, public securities and LP sources including pensions and endowments. Foreign adversaries named there include the PRC, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia and the Maduro regime. D.C. CFIUS and national-security seats and London antitrust and FDI seats — both 2026 partner-class labels — work inbound plus outbound. NYDFS Insurance Circular Letter No. 7, dated 11 July 2024, sets New York expectations for insurers using artificial intelligence systems and external consumer data in underwriting and pricing; that file remains live in the 2026 insurance outlook’s state-regulatory note. The life sector was a named 2025 target of Scattered Spider in that same outlook, against a CISA and FBI joint advisory updated 29 July 2025. Data Strategy and Security plus insurance-regulatory associates sit on incident response, NYDFS exams and vendor contracts; the in-house counterpart is the carrier general counsel and CISO, not a GS-scale agency lawyer.

01

Private equity and listed alternative managers

The general counsel who retains the funds, secondaries and PE M&A desks and later hires the people who staffed them. A March 2025 partner-to-CLO move into a Nasdaq-listed US alternative-asset manager is the live destination, not a rumor.

02

Life, annuity and P&C insurers and reinsurers

Insurance transactional, PRT, sidecar and regulatory seats billed to carriers, reinsurers, brokers and PE capital. North America saw 652 insurance M&A deals totaling $41.2 billion in 2025. The in-house titles on the other side of that invoice are GC, chief legal officer and associate transaction counsel.

03

Banks, investment advisers and LP institutions

White-collar, sanctions, AML, CFIUS and funds-regulatory work billed to banks, advisers, pensions, sovereigns and insurers-as-LPs. Public bodies (DOJ, SEC, FTC, NYDFS, PRA) are counterparties, not Cravath-scale payers.

04

TMT and healthcare corporates on public M&A

San Francisco technology and private-investment work, plus New York M&A and tax. The buyer on the company side is often the chief legal officer plus the deal committee, not a law-firm hiring partner.

06 Who pays the figure

A chief legal officer matching this firm is not matching a first-year sticker.

The in-house reader is not hiring a class-of-2026 associate off a 2L callback. The cash problem is the mid-to-senior bonus stack plus the unpublished class year against an internal package, and the equity problem is everything that sits above PEP-as-proxy.

In that New York interview cohort, 88 of 214 respondents sitting as general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal at private-equity, insurance or alternative-asset platforms over a 24-month window named a lockstep-trained funds or insurance mid-level — years 4 through 7 — as the in-house seat they could not price off a first-year sticker. A general counsel at a PE-backed life and annuity platform told us, inside that window, that her board had budgeted “first-year lockstep” against a seventh-year bonus stack and killed the requisition. A head of talent at a listed alternative-asset manager said the eighth-year partnership floor is what they actually compete with when they try to hire a funds counsel off this firm, not the $225,000 starting line.

Firm news, on 17 March 2025, recorded a Debevoise M&A partner — deputy co-chair of M&A, PE and healthcare groups, 19 years at the firm — named Partner, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of a Nasdaq-listed US alternative-asset manager, effective 31 March 2025. That is the corporate reader who now pays a market that includes this firm’s laterals. The person is not named here. The same buyer type appears as a client on 7 January 2026: the firm advised that manager on a long-term investment-management partnership with a NYSE-listed US life insurer involving a minimum $12 billion AUM mandate and a $500 million minority investment, staffed across insurance M&A, M&A, investment management, capital markets and tax, plus associates, counsel and law clerks. Deal-team titles on that mandate included partner, counsel, associate and law clerk, so “law clerk” is a live staffing title on insurance and investment-management matters, distinct from a judicial clerk.

Chambers USA and Global 2026 industry lists name banking, consumer finance, energy and natural resources, healthcare and life sciences, insurance, manufacturing, media, private equity and technology. Legal Cheek’s London core is private equity, insurance, M&A, finance and tax. San Francisco copy on the US students page points at the Bay Area’s most innovative companies, especially in technology and private investment, including cryptocurrency regulation and fund structures. Those are the buyer types who sign the engagement letter and, later, the offer letter. Public bodies — DOJ, SEC, FTC, NYDFS, NAIC, PRA, Lloyd’s, HMRC — are counterparties and alumni feeders. They are not the payers of this scale.

The associate (and the partner) who earns this table is hired almost entirely at the start, on two different locksteps.

  • US hire at the beginning. Almost all associates spent a summer here. Three programs, New York, D.C. and San Francisco. 2025 summers paid $4,330 a week. Partnership consideration from the eighth year. Nonequity from 1 July 2025 is a salaried destination whose dollars are unpublished.
  • London hire via vacation scheme. Ten trainees a year, 90 percent latest retention, NQ still £173,100. Dual qualification is a documented advantage, not a conversion of the dollar floor.
  • The unpublished middle. US class-year bases, 2026 bonuses, counsel scale and nonequity salary are not public. An earner comparing offers on those rungs is comparing something this page will not invent.

The general counsel who pays this table is buying firm-trained judgment on funds, insurance and the government perimeter.

  • Match the last public cell. US floor $225,000 plus the November 2025 bonus stack for the class year you honor. Do not paste the $235,000 market first-year onto a firm that has not printed it. Do not paste $6 million PEP onto a nonequity or counsel seat.
  • Honor the eighth year. The competing offer at the top of the associate lockstep is equity consideration, not a first-year sticker. Head of talent at listed alt-managers already said so in the same cohort.
  • The competing buyer is the company. The March 2025 CLO seat at a Nasdaq-listed alternative-asset manager is the pattern: the firm trains the lawyer; the company hires the judgment. For how that search actually runs, see in-house counsel recruiting.
A $6 million PEP cell is not a partner salary.
On matching the firm
07 The search itself

Write the offer on the last public cell, then decide the equity.

We have worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years, for companies hiring lockstep-trained lawyers onto the payroll and for the firms that still run that lockstep.

Over the trailing three years Sartori’s New York associate mandate telemetry records 33 closed searches, a 93 percent completion rate, a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, and a median 11 working days from offer to signature. Counter-offers landed on 37 percent of those 33 closed associate files. Of those 33, 11 were company-side hires of lockstep-trained funds, insurance or sanctions associates in years 4 through 7, over that same 36-month window. Seven of those 11 closed inside the 6-to-12-week band. Four ran past 12 weeks on compensation structure — published floor versus assumed market raise versus PEP-as-proxy — not on shortlist quality.

Four of those 11 lost first-round compensation authority. The general counsel had budgeted a first-year sticker, or had treated the $6 million PEP average as a partner salary the hire would never see, and the board would not reopen equity on the first pass. On two of those four files we had not put the unmatched $225,000 floor in the briefing pack; the buyer had assumed the June 2026 $235,000 market floor. We now open every brief that touches this firm on the employer page, not the scorecard. Those four files are why a 93 percent completion rate is not a victory lap: they were re-scoped to a deputy or stretched past twelve weeks. They did not vanish, and they did not fill on the original brief. That conversion cost is the uncomfortable number on this page.

Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, in the 2026 first-half wave covering New York in-house legal buyers, recorded 19 of 31 general-counsel and chief-legal-officer respondents at insurers and alternative-asset managers saying they had at least once been asked to match a PEP cell on an offer that was never going to be equity. That wave is a survey instrument, not a second interview count. The global research frame behind both instruments: about 1.5 million mapped profiles and quarterly market surveys running since 2019.

Two composites, category only. A PE-backed US life and annuity platform asked us to move a lockstep New York insurance and FIG associate, year 5, into an associate general counsel seat covering transactional and regulatory files ahead of a funded-reinsurance close. The company had used this firm as outside counsel on a PRT. The first offer honored year 3 to “reset” the in-house title. The candidate’s counter, consistent with the 37 percent incidence on the New York associate line, was the last public bonus stack for year 5 plus a signing bonus. We rewrote the brief to year 5 before the name circulated. Time-to-fill: nine weeks. A listed US alternative-asset manager asked us to hire a funds counsel into an in-house investment-management legal seat after a $12 billion-scale AUM partnership had made the outside-counsel relationship feel like a second legal department. Cash was not the bind; the bind was whether the compensation committee would underwrite a package against an eighth-year equity floor the candidate could still see. The file closed in the eleventh week after the committee met a second time. No real company, firm or candidate is named in either file.

The competing buyer at the top of this table is the company, not another firm. For how that search actually runs on a corporate payroll, see in-house counsel recruiting. For the associate lockstep when the buyer is still a firm, see associate recruiting. The in-house cash map sits on general counsel salary 2026 and in-house counsel salary 2026. The market lockstep this page does not own lives on the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

Debevoise 2026 pay: questions both sides of the table ask

What is the Debevoise salary for a US associate in 2026?

The only employer-published US associate base in 2026 is still $225,000, accessed 11 September 2026. Debevoise’s Compensation & Benefits page lists that starting salary plus discretionary bonuses; it does not publish a class-year grid. Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard, updated through 31 August 2026, does not list the firm among matchers of the 2 June 2026 Milbank $235,000–$455,000 scale. A complete Debevoise class-year US base table for the second half of 2026 is therefore not public and is omitted here, not estimated. The last Debevoise-attributed cash table that is public is the 21 November 2025 bonus match.

What is the last public Debevoise bonus match, and is a 2026 bonus public?

The last public match, on 21 November 2025, paid $15,000 plus $6,000 through $115,000 plus $25,000. Combined, the senior bonus stack is $140,000; the junior cells are prorated. Above the Law’s 2025 bonus tracker recorded the match date and a minimum-hours gate of “None.” The Global Legal Post, on 25 November 2025, independently listed the firm among those matching Cravath. A 2026 year-end bonus and a 2026 summer special bonus are not on the public scorecard through 31 August 2026 and are omitted.

What is Debevoise PEP, and is Debevoise partner salary a public number?

2025 profits per equity partner broke $6 million, up 12.5 percent from $5.3 million, on the 2026 Am Law cycle. That PEP cell is an average of equity-owner profit, not a W-2. Legal Business, on 7 April 2026, printed the $6 million figure alongside net income of $904.9 million. The American Lawyer, on 2 April 2026, put 2025 gross revenue at $1.77 billion. Individual equity-partner draws are not public. A nonequity tier has existed since 1 July 2025; about three lawyers sat in it by year-end 2025, and no dollar band was published. A nonequity partner is not paid the $6 million cell.

What does a Debevoise newly qualified solicitor earn in London in 2026?

London newly qualified base is still £173,100 on Legal Cheek’s 2026-27 profile, accessed 11 September 2026. That is the same NQ / 1-year PQE figure Legal Cheek reported on 30 January 2025, with 2-year PQE at £180,800 and 3 years PQE at £200,000. Law360 UK, on 28 January 2025, put the NQ lead at just more than £173,000, or $215,056 at then-prevailing exchange rates. First-year trainees are listed at £60,000 and second-year trainees at £65,000 on the live profile. A 2026 London NQ revision above £173,100 is not on those pages. London is a sterling lockstep, not a currency conversion of the US dollar floor.

Has Debevoise matched the 2026 $235,000 US associate scale?

No public match had been recorded as of 31 August 2026 on Above the Law’s matcher table. Milbank moved first on 2 June 2026, with a $235,000 first-year and $455,000 eighth-year, effective 1 July 2026. The PDF circulating as a 2 June 2026 salary announcement is a Milbank memorandum, not a Debevoise document. The employer careers page accessed 11 September 2026 still printed $225,000 as the US starting salary. Treat that page as this firm’s figure and the matcher list as the market figure. The market-wide lockstep lives on our 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

What should a chief legal officer budget to hire a Debevoise-trained lawyer onto the payroll?

Budget the $225,000 published US floor plus the last public bonus stack for the relevant class year, not the $6 million PEP cell. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 11 were company-side hires of lockstep-trained funds, insurance or sanctions associates in years 4 through 7; 4 of those 11 lost first-round compensation authority because the board had treated a first-year sticker or a PEP average as the offer. Re-scope class year and bonus stack before the name circulates, or the 6-to-12-week clock becomes a compensation-committee file. For how that search runs on a corporate payroll, see in-house counsel recruiting.

A quiet conversation

Match the last public cell — or walk past it.

We price Debevoise-trained associates and partners onto a company payroll against the careers page and the last bonus match, not the market nickname and not a PEP paycheck. Confidential, no obligation. The company brief comes first.
