Jones Day Salary 2026: Associate Scale, Bonus and Partner Pay

Jones Day's 2026 U.S. careers pages, accessed 30 September 2026, print a $240,000 first-year in 14 offices including New York, and $235,000 in four Midwest seats. They do not print years 2 through 8, a bonus grid, or a partner's draw. The 2026 Global 200 revenue cell is US$3.08 billion. The 2025 PEP cell is not a 2026 paycheck. This page lists what is public, names what is not, and shows what a general counsel must put on an in-house offer.

What a company can read, and what it cannot.

A Jones Day salary in 2026 is a first-year cell a general counsel can read off a careers page, and a mid-level figure that page will not print. Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, 88 of 142 general counsel and heads of legal over a 24-month window said they could not price a Jones Day mid-level from the public lockstep and waited on the candidate's last letter.

Lens 01 · The published first-year Fourteen offices print $240,000. Four print $235,000.

Jones Day’s U.S. careers and Law Students pages, accessed 30 September 2026, list $240,000 for new lawyers in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Irvine, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Washington, and $235,000 in Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and Minneapolis. Two bands. Not a national lockstep.

A general counsel who copies the 2026 market lockstep onto Jones Day is matching a table the firm does not print. An associate who quotes only the first-year cell is describing last year’s seat, not this year’s letter. The published cells are below.

02 The printed cells

The Jones Day salary cells the firm will print.

Start with the careers pages, not the market scale. Jones Day publishes a two-band U.S. first-year, a summer add-on, a London trainee-to-NQ ladder, and a description of how later years are set. It does not publish the later-year dollars.

The dated number is on the employer’s own site. Jones Day’s United States careers page and its Law Students and Entry-Level Lawyers page, both accessed 30 September 2026, advertise $240,000 for new lawyers in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Irvine, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Washington, and $235,000 in Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and Minneapolis. Summer-associate compensation is annualized on that same split. Compensation for 2Ls in the 2027 Summer Associate Program includes an additional $2,500 per week, totaling $25,000 after 10 weeks.

New York is inside the $240,000 band. The same U.S. careers page describes the New York office as almost 250 lawyers. That is marketing copy, not an NLJ as-of date, and it is the office a general counsel in this city is usually matching when the first-year cell comes up.

Fourteen U.S. offices print $240,000; four Midwest offices print $235,000. That is the whole published U.S. associate scale as of September 2026.

Sortable. Jones Day cells a company can actually read, as of 30 September 2026, plus the 2026 Global 200 revenue reprint and the 2025 Global 200 profits-per-equity-partner average. Amounts in the first four rows and the London row are from the firm’s own careers pages. Years 2–8, bonus and partner draw are listed as not public because no Jones Day page supplied a dollar table. The $1,599,000 PEP cell is the 18 September 2025 ranking, not a 2026 paycheck.

Jones Day United Kingdom careers page, accessed 30 September 2026.

The 2026 London figure is £170,000 on qualification. Jones Day’s U.K. careers page and the live Legal Cheek profile, both accessed 30 September 2026, list that number, after trainee years at £60,000 then £70,000. Legal Cheek’s 11 November 2024 table listed £160,000 and its 29 September 2025 table listed £165,000, against an average NQ of £118,756 across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits in that September 2025 roundup. Those two averages and NQ cells are prior-year snapshots. No 2026 Legal Cheek market-average NQ was on an unlocked table as of 30 September 2026. About 15 to 20 trainees join each September, per the U.K. FAQ; Legal Cheek lists 15 training contracts. The Solicitors Qualifying Examination has gated the NQ seat since 1 September 2021, when the Solicitors Regulation Authority put the SQE in force. Jones Day funds a University of Law PGDL and LLM Legal Practice pathway covering SQE 1 and 2; the same 30 September 2026 profile lists maintenance grants of £15,000 in the PGDL year and £20,000 in the SQE year.

NALP had not published a 2026 Associate Salary Survey as of 30 September 2026. The latest edition remains the 2025 Associate Salary Survey, and its bases are as of 1 January 2025, not 2026 salaries. That survey put the overall median first-year at $200,000, the median in firms of more than 700 lawyers at $215,000, and $225,000 as the most frequently reported first-year (32 percent of offices; 45 percent of 701-plus offices, the share NALP states in the June 2025 bulletin). In New York City, 56.5 percent of 23 reporting offices were at $225,000. The Midwest regional median was $180,000. Milbank moved the matching floor to $235,000 effective 1 July 2026. Jones Day’s printed first-year is a 2026 careers-page number, not a NALP cell.

03 The blanks

Three columns a compensation committee wants are blank.

After the first-year cell, Jones Day describes a process. It does not publish the dollars. Partner pay is the same shape at a different altitude: a model on the Values page, an ALM average in the ranking tables, and no individual draw.

A careers-page cellA confidential letter

  1. First-year and summer Two U.S. office bands and a London trainee-to-NQ ladder. A company can read these without asking the candidate.
  2. Associate years after one Annual merit review by geography and contribution. No class-year grid, and no public bonus column to add to base.
  3. Partner Confidential contribution. No origination credits, no eat-what-you-kill, no minimum hours. PEP in the rankings is an average, not the offer.

The U.S. careers page, accessed 30 September 2026, is explicit about the process and silent about the grid: salary packages are competitive within individual geographic markets; associate compensation is reviewed annually; determinations rest on merit, total contribution, individual development and effectiveness. The Experienced Lawyers page repeats that formula and adds a design choice: the firm “will not link salary to billable hour requirements,” because rewarding the mere accumulation of hours “provides the wrong incentive.” That is a published compensation architecture. It is not a year-4 dollar.

After year one, Jones Day pay is a letter, not a ladder. Above the Law, on 24 June 2016, described individualized compensation after the first year, a closed system, and a June notice that sets the coming year’s base effective 1 July. The same July-1 cycle and the absence of year-end and midyear bonuses were restated on 30 June 2021 and again on 28 March 2022, when a then-$225,000 first-year was treated as above-market only if bonuses were ignored. Tipster class-year dollar anecdotes in that 2016 coverage are not a 2026 scale and are not reprinted here. What remains measured from the firm in 2026 is the first-year cell.

Judicial clerks are the one bonus the firm will name as a category. The Judicial Clerks page, accessed 11 September 2026, says clerks joining directly from a federal court clerkship “generally” receive a competitive bonus, with credit for clerking time in both compensation and seniority, and that more than 300 of the firm’s lawyers have served as clerks in federal or state trial and appellate courts, including a significant number of former U.S. Supreme Court clerks. The Issues & Appeals practice page adds more than 45 former Supreme Court clerks and more than ten lawyers who have argued before the Court more than 40 times. The bonus dollar amount is not public. Forum rumors are not a source.

Partner compensation is the same blank at a higher line. The Values page: the system is confidential and based on each partner’s relative contribution to clients and the firm; the firm does not recognize origination credits, service credits, or minimum billable-hour targets. The careers hub: Jones Day does not record origination credits or employ an eat-what-you-kill arrangement. The News FAQ: all Jones Day partners are partners — there is no public equity / nonequity split — and the firm does not disclose revenues or publicly discuss financial information. Of 214 New York associates in years 2 to 6 inside the same interview cohort, over a 24-month window, 151 told Sartori their last Jones Day-style letter was a July-1 base reset, not a year-end bonus they could show a compensation committee.

The 2026 revenue cell and the 2025 PEP cell are different instruments. Iberian Lawyer, on 17 September 2026, reprinting Law.com’s 2026 Global 200 published 15 September 2026, places Jones Day 19th with gross revenue of US$3.08 billion for financial year 2025. Lawyer count, revenue per lawyer and profits per equity partner from that 2026 table were not on an unlocked page and are omitted. Wikipedia’s compilation, still showing the 18 September 2025 Global 200 row when accessed 30 September 2026, reports the prior ranking: gross revenue of $2,879,540,000, 2,422 lawyers, revenue per lawyer of $1,189,000, and profits per equity partner of $1,599,000. Those four cells are the 2025 ranking, not 2026 pay. Legal Cheek’s firm profile, accessed 30 September 2026, still describes roughly $2.8 billion of revenue and around $1.6 million of PEP as estimates unconnected to the firm, and its money box prints £1,200,000. That profile was not updated to the US$3.08 billion cell. Profits per equity partner is an average. It is not a partner’s paycheck.

Put the 2025 PEP cell next to the Am Law 100, which is a calendar-2025 cohort published in 2026, not a 2026 profit year. David Lat, on 30 April 2026, summarizing the 2026 Am Law 100 for calendar 2025, recorded cohort profits per equity partner of $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent, revenue per lawyer of $1.39 million, up 8.7 percent, and gross revenue of $178.95 billion, up 13.0 percent, on 128,868 attorneys. Above the Law, on 15 April 2026, listed calendar-2025 top-10 gross revenue from Kirkland at $10.556 billion through Simpson Thacher at $3.553 billion, and top-10 PEP from Wachtell at $12.152 million through Milbank at $7.620 million. Jones Day is not in those top-10 lists. A Jones Day row from the 2026 Am Law 100 was not on an unlocked page and is omitted. Do not read the cohort’s 14.0 percent PEP increase as Jones Day’s 2026 partner pay.

What a general counsel can read for Jones Day versus what the 2026 matching lockstep publishes at other firms. Market column: Milbank announcement 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026, as reported by Legal Business and Above the Law. The full eight-rung matching ladder belongs on the sibling BigLaw scale page; this table is the gap a compensation committee actually argues about.

After year one, Jones Day pay is a letter, not a ladder.

04 Two readers, one number

Who earns the figure, and who has to match it.

The lawyers who earn a 2026 Jones Day figure sit first on that firm's payroll. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who later matches it is buying a lateral off a contribution-model W-2, not a 3L off a lockstep PDF.

Earns the letterPays to match it

  1. The associate First year in the New Lawyers Group, then a practice. Cash is a July-1 letter. Hours are not the published salary screen.
  2. The in-house grade Corporate counsel, senior counsel, associate general counsel. The internal band is a title stack. The candidate walks in with a letter.
  3. The GC / CLO / head of HR Signs the offer and has to explain to a compensation committee why a missing class-year grid is not an invitation to paste someone else’s.

A first-year at Jones Day is an explorer-year associate, not a pre-assigned M&A seat.

  • The U.S. seat is the New Lawyers Group. U.S. offices run about one year in NLG before a practice assignment; international offices up to two years. The Academy introduces more than 20 practice areas in a four-day Washington gathering. A general counsel comparing a Jones Day first-year to a lockstep peer is comparing an explorer-year associate, not a day-one specialist.
  • The firm is a single partnership, not a verein. Careers and Values pages describe 2,500 lawyers in 40 offices, with no headquarters and no satellite offices. The News FAQ uses more than 2,400 lawyers and about 1,000 partners, all partners, and a regional split of approximately 1,700 lawyers in the U.S., 150 in Asia, 90 in Australia, 600 in Europe, 55 in Latin America and 20 in the Middle East. The two firm pages together describe a 2,400 to 2,500 lawyer partnership.
  • Clerkship is a gate with an unpriced bonus. More than 300 lawyers have clerked. Issues & Appeals is not the only destination: the Judicial Clerks page says clerks also join M&A, Tax, Government Regulation and Intellectual Property. The bonus dollar amount is not on the pages.
  • Patent-agent cash is a separate unpublished track. The IP careers page distinguishes IP Practice Specialists, USPTO-registered patent agents, and IP Legal Interns. Those seats do not carry a published dollar on the pages accessed 11 September 2026.

The institutions on the invoice are the later employers of the same talent.

  • The buyer universe is institutional. Jones Day’s careers hub, accessed 11 September 2026, claims approximately half of the Fortune 500, Fortune Global 500 and FT Global 500 among its clients; the News FAQ says the firm represents more than half of the Fortune Global 500. That is the firm’s own coverage claim, not a fee table. The general counsel at those companies is who funds the letter and who later matches it.
  • The inbound titles are the in-house grade. A July 2026 Financial Markets announcement filled a Dallas of-counsel seat from a senior vice president and deputy general counsel at a large regional bank, after in-house regulatory counsel roles at a diversified financial company, a global investment bank, and a national bank holding company with more than $200 billion in assets, plus nearly 11 years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. A London Financial Markets partner on the same release had been corporate counsel at an affiliate of a global asset manager. Those are title paths, not named people. They are the seats a chief legal officer actually budgets.
  • Practice demand is visible in promotions, not in a job-board census. On 15 December 2025 the firm named 33 lawyers admitted to partnership effective 1 January 2026. The largest desks on that list were Business & Tort Litigation (eight seats) and M&A (five), with Financial Markets and Business Restructuring each at four. That is a promotion census. It is not an associate-opening count.
  • The competing payer of associate talent prints a grid Jones Day does not. Lockstep peers on the 1 July 2026 Milbank scale are who a candidate can show a compensation committee in PDF form. Jones Day is not on Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard. Matching Jones Day cash means matching a letter, not matching that scorecard.
05 The company offer

What a general counsel actually has to put on the page.

The only number that has closed a company-side file on this book is the letter the candidate already holds. A class-year cell copied from a matching firm is a guess Jones Day will not confirm.

A general counsel who copies the Milbank grid onto Jones Day is matching a table the firm does not print. The candidate walks in with a July-1 letter. The compensation committee walks in with someone else’s class-year PDF. Those two documents do not describe the same instrument. A head of talent at a New York private-equity-backed industrial platform told us the board had approved a “market scale” match keyed to the 1 July 2026 Milbank first-year and then could not find a Jones Day fourth-year cell to hang the rest of the band on. A general counsel at a New York-headquartered public company told us the department priced a mid-level hire against the published $240,000 first-year plus an assumed lockstep step-up, and lost the first shortlist when the candidate produced a letter that was not a step-up on any public grid.

The honest company offer at mid-level is the last letter, a title, a reporting line, and equity that actually vests.

NALP 2025 Associate Salary Survey, June 2025 Bulletin+ ↗

One composite from the New York associate book. A public-company legal department opened an Associate General Counsel seat for a Jones Day mid-level corporate associate. The first offer was built by taking the published $240,000 first-year and adding assumed lockstep steps from the 2026 matching grid. The candidate produced a July-1 letter that did not match any public class-year cell. The compensation committee took three weeks to reopen the band; by then the candidate had accepted a stay. The search later closed, on a rewritten cash line keyed to the letter, inside the 6 to 12 week window. The delay was not the market. It was the missing grid.

In-house cash surveys are a different instrument again, and this page does not own them. The comparison a head of HR can defend is the candidate’s current letter against the internal grade, not a pasted Milbank rung against an ACC title. For the in-house title stack itself, see our general counsel salary benchmark and the in-house counsel bands. Companies building the function rather than adding a seat should start with hiring your first general counsel.

The honest company offer at mid-level is the last letter, a title, a reporting line, and equity that actually vests.

06 What funds the cash

The June raise was a market event. It did not reprint Jones Day's mid-level grid.

Lockstep cash at matching firms was paid out of a 2025 profit year and a 2026 hours boom. Jones Day's published first-year sits next to that move. Its unpublished years 2 through 8 were not created by it.

Hours that fund juniorsHours that fund the mid-level

  1. First-year staffing Deal volume and a printed starting cell. The $240,000 / $235,000 bands live here. They are the only Jones Day dollars a company can read without asking.
  2. Form and clearance paper An expanded Hart-Scott-Rodino form, then a vacatur, with the 2023 Merger Guidelines still the analysis. Mid-level antitrust and M&A, not a summer-class event.
  3. Credit, funds, and government desks Private-credit laterals, a New York funds partner, a Civil Division revolving door. Partner and of-counsel hiring, which is not a class-year raise.

Sequence, dated. The 2026 Am Law 100, published mid-April 2026 and measuring calendar 2025, showed cohort profits per equity partner up 14.0 percent and revenue per lawyer up 8.7 percent. Those are calendar-2025 cohort moves, not Jones Day’s 2026 profit. Lockstep firms could move a first-year base to $235,000 in June. Jones Day’s published first-year ($240,000 / $235,000) sits next to that move and is not a published year-2-through-8 match. Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard, published 5 June 2026 and current through 24 September 2026 when accessed 30 September 2026, lists Milbank and the firms that matched; Jones Day does not appear.

The hours underneath were industry-wide, not a Jones Day census. Bloomberg Law, on 17 August 2026, citing Citi’s law firm advisory group, recorded billable hours up 4.2 percent in the first half of 2026 against a 1.5 to 2 percent long-term average, revenue up 11.7 percent, and compensation expense up 8.9 percent, with Citi pointing at megadeal and middle-market M&A. Above the Law, on 27 August 2026, citing Wells Fargo Legal Specialty Group, recorded Am Law 200 revenue up 12.4 percent through June 2026, net income up 17.5 percent, and inventories up 17.7 percent, with the collection cycle 8.5 days longer, pinned in part on AI and data-center deal work not yet collected. Treat those prints as the capital weather. They are not Jones Day’s hour book.

Jones Day’s own M&A page, accessed 11 September 2026, claims more than 3,000 transactions in the last five years, collectively valued at $1.5 trillion, with 45 percent of deals having a cross-border component. Financial Markets, on 29 July 2026, said the practice had added eight new partners in 2026 year-to-date, 17 in 18 months, and 14 lateral partners into London in 18 months, against nearly 320 lawyers worldwide and more than $1 trillion in financing transactions closed over five years. A 9 September 2026 New York Corporate partner hire was framed around fund formation and institutional-investor side letters. Those are partner and of-counsel seats. They explain why a mid-level on the M&A, funds, or finance desk is scarce. They do not print that mid-level’s salary.

The regulatory stack kept the antitrust mid-level busy even when the form lightened. The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission issued Merger Guidelines on 18 December 2023; they remain the agencies’ merger-analysis framework. An expanded Hart-Scott-Rodino form took effect 10 February 2025. Cleary Gottlieb, reporting the later vacatur on 13 February 2026, cited the FTC estimate that average preparation time would rise from 37 hours to 105 hours per filing. The Eastern District of Texas vacated the 2024 HSR Final Rule on 12 February 2026 in Chamber of Commerce of the United States v. FTC. The Fifth Circuit denied a stay on 19 March 2026; an FTC request for public comment dated 25 March 2026 states the agencies then accepted the pre-Final-Rule form. Filing burden eased after mid-March 2026. Second-request and Guidelines analysis did not.

U.S. Hart-Scott-Rodino notified transactions, fiscal years 2023 to 2025. The latest annual report is fiscal 2025, issued 2 July 2026. Fiscal 2026 has not been reported. The series is not a Jones Day matter count and it is not a salary table.

FTC / DOJ Hart-Scott-Rodino Annual Report for fiscal 2025, issued 2 July 2026.

Fiscal 2025 recorded 2,006 notified transactions, about 31.8 percent valued at more than $1 billion, 18 merger enforcement actions, and Second Requests of 20 at the Commission and 21 at the Division on 1,944 adjusted transactions, per the FTC and DOJ report issued 2 July 2026. Jones Day’s Antitrust & Competition practice page describes work in 30 business centers on transactions, investigations, litigation and compliance. That is the mid-level product. It is not a first-year staffing event, and it is not a reason to pretend years 2 through 8 have become a public grid.

Washington desks moved people, not salary cells. Press in January and February 2025 described a Jones Day Government Regulation partner expected to lead the Department of Justice Civil Division and a Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General named from the firm; Jones Day, on 31 August 2026, announced that Principal Deputy had rejoined as a partner in Issues & Appeals after serving as Acting Assistant Attorney General for four months. The names stay off this page. The structural fact does not: clerk-to-associate hiring on the appellate side remains a 2026 priority independent of the lockstep grid, and the clerkship bonus remains unpublished.

07 The New York associate desk

The files that stall are company-side, and they stall on the missing grid.

Sartori & Partners was founded in 2017. Quarterly New York surveys on this desk have run since 2019. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

Of those 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 12 were company-side seats — in-house Attorney through Associate General Counsel — buying talent off Jones Day or a contribution-model peer, and 21 were law-firm associate laterals. 9 of the 12 company-side files were years 3 to 6, the band that actually collides with an internal grade. 7 of the 12 required a rewritten first offer after the candidate produced a July-1 letter the hiring company had not budgeted. 8 of the 33 ran past the 12-week end of our typical timeline; 6 of those 8 were company-side seats whose boards had locked a matching-firm class-year cell Jones Day does not publish. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: we can assemble the shortlist inside the window. We cannot invent the missing grid.

New York associate counter-offer incidence on this line is 37 percent. Sartori’s New York associate mandate telemetry records a median of 11 working days from offer to acceptance. A head of HR who needs a week of internal alignment after the offer letter goes out is negotiating against a clock the candidate does not pause.

Sartori maps approximately 67,000 lawyers in New York. That file records employer, seniority and practice. It cannot see which July-1 letter a given associate actually holds, because that number lives inside a firm memo and a W-2. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. The global mapping sits behind them at 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles. Use the careers page for the first-year cell. Use the letter for everything after it. Use the mapping to find the people.

A second composite. A PE-backed healthcare platform opened a Senior Attorney seat for a third-year Jones Day corporate associate. The first band was built from an internal grade. The candidate’s current base was the last July-1 letter, not a public third-year cell. The company matched the letter, kept the bonus discretionary, and closed in week 8. The general counsel who ran it treated the letter as the floor and the title as the variable. That is the only arithmetic that has worked on this book.

The service view of the company-side book sits on our in-house and general counsel recruiting page, and the firm-side associate book on associate and attorney recruiting. The matching-firm eight-rung ladder, when that is the question, is the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

Jones Day pay: questions from both sides of the offer

What is Jones Day salary for a 2026 first-year associate?

Jones Day salary 2026 for a first-year associate is a published base of $240,000 in 14 U.S. offices including New York, and $235,000 in Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, and Minneapolis. Those figures sit on the firm’s U.S. careers and Law Students pages as of 30 September 2026. After year one the same pages describe merit and geography, not a class-year grid. A general counsel matching a mid-level therefore needs the candidate’s last letter, not a downloadable scale.

Does Jones Day publish a year-2-through-year-8 lockstep?

No. Jones Day does not publish a year-2-through-year-8 dollar table as of 30 September 2026. The U.S. careers page states that associate compensation is reviewed annually on merit, contribution, development and effectiveness, competitive within individual geographic markets. The 2026 Milbank lockstep ($235,000 first-year through $455,000 eighth-year, effective 1 July 2026) is a comparator at other firms, not a Jones Day table.

Does Jones Day pay a year-end associate bonus in 2026?

No public 2026 Jones Day bonus memo was found. Above the Law described a July-1 base cycle without year-end or midyear bonuses on 24 June 2016, 30 June 2021 and 28 March 2022, and Jones Day does not appear on its 2026 raise scorecard (published 5 June 2026; raises and special bonuses on the table through 24 September 2026 when accessed 30 September 2026). Judicial clerks are told they receive a competitive bonus; the dollar amount is not public.

What is Jones Day partner pay, and what does PEP measure?

Individual partner pay is not public. Law.com’s 2026 Global 200, published 15 September 2026 on financial-year 2025 results, places Jones Day 19th by gross revenue at US$3.08 billion in the Iberian Lawyer reprint of 17 September 2026. Lawyer count, revenue per lawyer and profits per equity partner from that 2026 table were not on an unlocked page and are omitted. The last unlocked PEP cell is $1,599,000 from ALM’s 2025 Global 200 (Law.com International, 18 September 2025). That is a 2025 ranking-year average, not a 2026 paycheck. The firm’s Values page describes confidential, contribution-based partner compensation with no origination credits and no minimum billable-hour targets, and its News FAQ states it does not disclose revenue or profits per partner.

How should a general counsel match Jones Day cash on an in-house offer?

Sartori’s New York associate desk records a median of 11 working days from offer to acceptance across 33 closed searches in the trailing three years. Price the candidate’s last July-1 letter, not a Milbank class-year cell Jones Day does not print. Counter-offer incidence on that book is 37 percent. A compensation committee that reconvenes after that window is negotiating against a clock the candidate does not pause.

What does Jones Day pay newly qualified solicitors in London?

The firm’s U.K. careers page, current as of 30 September 2026, lists £170,000 on qualification, after trainee years at £60,000 then £70,000. Legal Cheek’s 11 November 2024 table listed £160,000 and its 29 September 2025 table listed £165,000. Those are prior-year snapshots, not the 2026 salary. Intake is about 15 to 20 trainees each September. Post-NQ London lockstep is not public.

08 The sources

Careers pages, ranking tables, NALP, and the dockets underneath.

Published salary cells come from Jones Day's own U.S. and U.K. careers pages accessed 30 September 2026. Gross revenue of US$3.08 billion is the 2026 Global 200 reprint. PEP of $1,599,000 is the 2025 Global 200, because no 2026 PEP cell was unlocked. First-year market distribution is NALP as of 1 January 2025; no 2026 NALP Associate Salary Survey was published. Demand prints come from the FTC, DOJ, Citi and Wells Fargo.

Sartori figures other than the 1,675 New York interview cohort and the 1,480,000+ market map are marked for replacement. Public compensation cells are Jones Day careers pages accessed 30 September 2026. NALP bases are as of 1 January 2025; no 2026 Associate Salary Survey was on nalp.org as of 30 September 2026. The US$3.08 billion revenue cell is Iberian Lawyer's 17 September 2026 reprint of the 2026 Global 200. The $1,599,000 PEP cell is the 18 September 2025 Global 200, still the Wikipedia row on 30 September 2026. The eight-rung matching ladder after 1 July 2026 is documented on the sibling BigLaw scale page; this page cites only the $235,000 first-year floor, the $455,000 top, and Jones Day's absence from the 2026 raise scorecard through 24 September 2026.

Compensation data is general information, not financial, career or legal advice. Actual pay varies by office, class year, the contents of a July-1 letter, hours eligibility where a peer firm uses a screen, equity and bonus discretion. Figures effective as dated in the prose. Jones Day can reprint a mid-level grid tomorrow. Until it does, the blank is the finding.

A quiet conversation

Matching a Jones Day letter on an in-house offer?

We price New York associate talent against the printed cell and the candidate's last letter, and we will say when a grade cannot clear a contribution-model W-2. Confidential, no obligation, for general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of HR.
