Kirkland & Ellis Salary: The Last Published Scale (2023)

The last U.S. associate table the legal press can attribute to Kirkland is the 30 November 2023 memo, $225,000 to $420,000. A 2026 match is not public. This page sets that dated grid next to what a general counsel must bid on an in-house offer, using the 2025 ACC medians, and what an associate on the grid actually takes home.

Two prices. One 2023 memo.

Sartori maps about 13,000 lawyers in Chicago, and the question a general counsel actually asks is what a Kirkland & Ellis salary still costs to match on an in-house offer. The last dated table the legal press can attribute to the firm is 30 November 2023.

Four numbers, two buyers. The associate reads a 2023 lockstep. The general counsel reads a 2025 in-house median. Neither number is a 2026 Kirkland match. Every figure is cited below.

02 The published scale

Kirkland & Ellis salary: the last published U.S. scale

Open the 2023 memo first. Everything a company or an associate does with the 2026 question starts from this grid, not from a guessed match.

The last public Kirkland U.S. associate raise is a 30 November 2023 memo. Above the Law published the announcement the same day; the ABA Journal listed the firm among Cravath matchers and restated that Kirkland outlined the scale through the class of 2018. Law.com's 30 November 2023 match list put Kirkland in the same wave as Davis Polk, Wachtell, Sidley and Skadden. The grid below is that memo as the legal press printed it, not a 2026 reconstruction.

Kirkland's last published U.S. associate bases (2023 vintage, effective 1 January 2024), matching the 28 November 2023 Cravath table as reported by Above the Law on 30 November 2023. Class years are as of that memo. The extracted Kirkland memo did not print an eighth-year cell.
Class year (Nov 2023) Seniority then Base salary
Class of 2023 1st year $225,000
Class of 2022 2nd year $235,000
Class of 2021 3rd year $260,000
Class of 2020 4th year $310,000
Class of 2019 5th year $365,000
Class of 2018 6th year $390,000
Class of 2017 7th year $420,000

Click a column header to re-rank. Biglaw Investor's historical market table records the same lockstep for calendar 2024 and 2025 with an eighth-year and senior step of $435,000; that cell is a 2024–2025 market row, not a Kirkland PDF the legal press extracted. Income partners whose pay was tied to the associate grid were also raised to the market rate for their class year, per the same 30 November 2023 Above the Law report. Bonuses were not in the raise memo; the firm said they would follow.

Published lockstepUnpublished 2026 cash

  1. The memo you can print A class-year base the firm put in writing and the legal press carried. This is the only U.S. associate scale this page treats as Kirkland's own.
  2. The bonus you cannot print Year-end cash at this firm has been described as individualized and typically at or above New York market. Structure is not a 2025 dollar figure.
  3. The 2026 match you cannot assume A later lockstep exists in the market. Absence from the matcher list is not a secret raise and is not a refusal. It is a missing document.

The 2026 market lockstep is a different table. Milbank announced it on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026: first-years at $235,000, seniors at $455,000. Bloomberg Law, on 17 June 2026, restated that floor and cap and noted Milbank had led the 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2026 U.S. associate raises. Norton Rose Fulbright's 1 July 2026 match, as printed by Above the Law, set out the full class-year grid for firms that did match. That ladder is the national rate for firms on it. It is not a Kirkland publication.

The coincidence that matters for a general counsel is this: the 2026 market first-year equals Kirkland's last published second-year base. Treating $235,000 as a Kirkland first-year in 2026 is a category error unless a later memo appears.

03 The company bid

What a general counsel must actually bid

The associate on that grid is paid by Kirkland. The general counsel who wants the same lawyer on the company payroll is bidding a different table: the 2025 ACC in-house medians, the latest edition published, by title, not by class year.

A fourth-year on that grid already sits above median associate general counsel base. The Association of Corporate Counsel 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey — 1,632 respondents, data effective around spring 2025 fielding, executive summary published 16 September 2025 — put U.S. associate-general-counsel median base at $245,000 and median total cash at $294,000. Deputy-general-counsel median base was $280,000; median total cash $368,000. Kirkland's published fourth-year (2023 memo) is $310,000. The published seventh-year is $420,000, which already exceeds deputy-general-counsel median total cash.

That is the hiring problem, stated as arithmetic rather than as culture. An attorney-grade or senior-attorney requisition priced on ACC medians will not clear a lockstep midlevel. An associate-general-counsel requisition priced on ACC median base will not clear a fourth-year. A deputy-general-counsel cash package starts to talk to a fifth- and sixth-year, and still loses a seventh-year on base alone. Chief legal officers at companies with revenue greater than $5 billion earn 44 percent more in base and 173 percent more in total target compensation than chief legal officers at organizations under $1 billion, per the same 2025 survey; large-company chief-legal-officer median total target exceeds $1 million. That is the first in-house band that can absorb senior-associate or junior-partner all-in without pretending the title is still “senior counsel.”

ACC 2025 survey PDF ↗

The 2026 ACC Chief Legal Officers Survey, 1,049 participants across 20 industries and 43 countries, explains why so many companies never open the requisition at all. 63 percent of chief legal officers expect legal-department headcount to remain stable. Use of outside counsel jumped to 48 percent, and consultants to 27 percent, as the pressure valve for enforcement complexity. Budget and resource constraints were the top barrier for 35 percent. Operational efficiency was the top strategic initiative for 53 percent. Fastest-growing regulatory concerns were trade and tariffs at 30 percent and AI regulation at 24 percent. 84 percent of chief legal officers report directly to the CEO; 79 percent almost always attend board meetings; the CLO title itself is used by 34 percent.

That is the economic structure of the company reader: keep the in-house roster flat, send private-equity, funds, mass-torts and investigations work out, and only open a general-counsel, deputy-general-counsel or associate-general-counsel requisition when the hold period or a named-officer need requires a signature inside the building. The ACC 2025 survey also recorded that 77 percent of in-house respondents had prior law-firm experience, 28 percent had changed jobs in the past two years, and 17 percent planned to change in the coming year. An attorney with prior law-firm experience saw a 16 percent higher median base and 18 percent higher total cash; a chief legal officer with prior firm experience saw 21 percent more base and 13 percent more total cash. The typical path off a Kirkland-scale seat is not a staff-attorney posting. It is a titled in-house seat, or it is the invoice.

Two 2025 sponsor appointments, read as a pattern and not as a directory, sit on that same titled rung. In January 2025 a Boca Raton private-equity firm — $5.6 billion of assets under management, national-security and industrials portfolio — appointed a general counsel from an Am Law private-equity partnership to cover fund formation, transactions and regulatory compliance. In April 2025 a San Francisco real-estate private-equity sponsor hired an executive vice president, general counsel, from an Am Law real-estate partnership. The company was not buying a second-year. It was buying the person who used to send the invoice. Neither hire is a Sartori mandate; both are public announcements, names omitted here.

The firm pays the scaleThe company pays the seat

  1. Payroll at the firm The associate earns the last published class-year base plus whatever individualized bonus the partnership actually paid. The document trail for the base is 2023.
  2. The panel invoice The company keeps headcount flat and sends private-equity, funds, take-private and trial work out. The 2026 CLO survey is the map of that choice.
  3. The in-house offer Title, cash and equity have to clear a lockstep midlevel. An attorney-grade requisition priced on survey medians will not. Most companies discover this on the second declined offer.

If you want the lawyer, price the title. If you want the work, keep the invoice.

  • Write the title first. An associate-general-counsel or deputy-general-counsel grade is a compensation decision, not a courtesy. A senior-attorney requisition against a fourth-year lockstep is how processes stall.
  • Put equity on the page. Large-company chief-legal-officer total target is the band that absorbs senior all-in. Carry at a sponsor, or RSUs at a public company, is what usually closes a lockstep midlevel who will not move for median AGC cash.
  • Budget the counter-offer. Firms on this economics defend a fourth- through sixth-year harder than a second-year, because replacement is another lockstep paycheck plus a year of matter continuity.
  • Name the alternative. Holding headcount flat and sending the next take-private or funds close to outside counsel is a rational reading of the 2026 CLO survey. It is not a failed search. It is a choice you should make on purpose.

Your class year is the number the company can see. Your bonus is the number it cannot.

  • Lead with the published base. A company can verify class year. It cannot verify last year's individualized bonus, and it should not be asked to match a figure that is not public.
  • Expect a title conversation, not a quiet plus-up. In-house cash that clears a fifth- or sixth-year usually arrives as associate general counsel or deputy general counsel, not as a senior-counsel grade with a bump.
  • Do not resign into a gap on a guessed 2026 match. The 2026 market first-year is not, on the public record, your firm's first-year.
  • London is a separate paycheck. The sterling NQ conversion sits on Legal Cheek. A U.S. in-house offer will not be marked to that figure unless the seat is itself in London.
A fourth-year on that grid already sits above median associate general counsel base.
On the in-house gap
04 Partner pay and London

Partner economics, London cash, and the funds bench

The associate scale is the document. Partner pay is an ALM average. London is a sterling conversion of the same unpublished-2026 problem. None of the three is a substitute for the other.

The 2026 Am Law 100, covering fiscal 2025 and reprinted by Above the Law on 15 April 2026, put Kirkland profits per equity partner at $11.121 million, up 20.19 percent, rank 2 behind Wachtell's $12.152 million. Revenue per lawyer was $2.547 million, up 10.79 percent, rank 4. Legal Business, 19 March 2026, described the firm as the first above $10 billion, with revenue moving from $8.8 billion and PEP “a record $11.1 million.” Law.com, 18 March 2026, put partner headcount about 9 percent higher, to 1,823. Those figures measure a U.S.-headquartered firm's prior-year financials. They are not take-home for any named partner, and they are not the associate grid.

Global Legal Post, on 18 March 2026, citing Pirical, put 2025 lawyer headcount at 4,239, with litigation at 908 (up 8 percent, the largest add) and corporate at 1,672 (up 3 percent, still the largest group). London stood at 557 lawyers, up 38, the third-largest office. New York added about 50 lawyers. Equity partners were reported at 595. The same piece recorded more than 150 litigation laterals in 2025. Chambers USA 2026, in firm-supplied copy, described more than 4,000 attorneys across 24 offices and listed 133 ranked departments and 321 ranked individuals. The firm states on its own About page that it has no headquarters location, while remaining a Chicago-origin partnership from 1909.

London cash is the one non-dollar paycheck this page can date. Legal Cheek's 2026 firm profile lists first-year trainees at £70,000 and second-year trainees at £75,000, 15 training-contract places, 87 percent latest trainee retention, and 24 offices in 8 countries, converting the U.S. NQ into sterling on the same money box. Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 NQ league table put the U.S. London pack at £175,000–£180,000 against Magic Circle £150,000, with an average NQ across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits of £118,756. The Solicitors Regulation Authority's SQE route, as dated August 2025, still requires SQE1, SQE2 and two years' qualifying work experience. That two-year qualifying period is the training contract at this firm. Applications for 2028 training contracts ran from 1 October to 14 December 2025 on the UK graduate site. The Legal Cheek Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey 2026-27 recorded average start 09:35 and average finish 21:32 for the Kirkland London sample; the profile states no annual target hours.

The funds bench is a separate hiring desk, not a synonym for corporate. Recurring 2025 partner-lateral releases described more than 600 dedicated investment-funds attorneys and, since January 2019, more than 1,900 funds closed or in process with capital commitments in excess of $2.17 trillion. The 4 June 2026 Palantir release stated that the firm supported nearly $500 billion in capital raised or targeted for clients in 2025 alone, and that more than 1,000 lawyers support the Investment Funds Group. Both dated claims stand; they are not the same census. Public 2025 partner laterals into that desk — names omitted — were labeled credit funds (3 April 2025), liquidity solutions and secondaries (12 May 2025), and venture and growth-equity funds (21 May 2025). S&P Global Ratings reported that secondaries volumes exceeded $200 billion in 2025, with GP-led continuation funds near half of volume. A general counsel who wants a funds lawyer is not posting a generic corporate role.

The $500 million proprietary AI program, announced via Reuters on 28 May 2026, is a capex figure, not an associate-headcount cut. The spend runs three to four years, starting with $100 million in 2026; the platform was designed from information from 250 Kirkland lawyers, with more than 180 technology professionals inside and outside the firm. Bloomberg Law, 15 June 2026, described more than 180 AI engineers and data scientists, about 50 dedicated AI engineers engaged, more than 250 attorneys in AI pods including about 100 equity partners, and nearly 40 open AI and legal-tech roles in Chicago and Houston at the time of the article. The 29 June 2026 Syllo release added exclusive multiyear litigation-AI build rights. The 2026 ACC survey found 36 percent of legal departments already in active GenAI deployment, and 47 percent of chief legal officers said technology and AI proficiency is what the CEO wants them to develop. A company cannot match lockstep cash with a Copilot slide.

05 Why the seats exist

The 2025–2026 stack that still prices the work

Demand for the lawyers on that published scale is not a mood. It is a dated stack of capital-cycle, merger-control, funds-regulation and trial events, each of which a general counsel already has on the board agenda.

KPMG counted $2.1 trillion of global private-equity investment in 2025. The Pulse of Private Equity Q4 2025 print, published January 2026, raised that total from $1.8 trillion in 2024, while deal count fell from 20,836 to 19,093. Americas deal value in the PDF was $1.2 trillion across 9,118 deals. PitchBook's 2025 Annual Global PE First Look said global PE deal value surpassed $2 trillion for only the second time and exit value topped $1 trillion for the second time, both trailing only 2021. Fewer, larger deals is the staffing implication: private-equity M&A and debt-finance midlevels on live take-privates, not a surge of first-year seats for small-cap volume.

Law.com, citing preliminary London Stock Exchange Group data on 2 January 2026, put Kirkland at $730.8 billion of global principal announced M&A value, with global principal deal value up 49 percent and global deal volume down 3 percent. A later Law.com package, 8 January 2026, put the firm's principal-value market share at 18 percent. Bloomberg Law's 2 January 2026 league tables, a different methodology — completed or pending, not LSEG principal — put Kirkland at $743 billion against Latham at about $787 billion, with global deal volume more than $4.7 trillion, up 40 percent from 2024. Those prints measure attributed deal value, not fees collected and not associate headcount.

Two mega take-privates priced the 2025–2026 private-equity, debt-finance, antitrust and international-trade desks. Electronic Arts announced on 29 September 2025 an agreement to be acquired by a consortium of PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners at an enterprise value of approximately $55 billion, or $210 per share in cash, with $36 billion of equity including a PIF rollover and $20 billion of JPMorgan-committed debt, expected to close in Q1 of the company's FY27. Kirkland's same-day release stated the firm is counsel to the consortium and lead counsel to PIF; the practice labels on that release were corporate, debt finance, capital markets, executive compensation, international trade and national security, tax, and antitrust and competition. Hologic closed on 7 April 2026: funds managed by Blackstone and TPG, announced 21 October 2025, stockholder approval 5 February 2026, cash consideration to equityholders approximately $17.3 billion in the 8-K. Global Legal Post, 18 March 2026, described Kirkland as advising Blackstone and TPG on the $18.3 billion October announcement. Post-close portfolio hiring, when it happens, is usually a general-counsel or associate-general-counsel seat, not a first-year.

U.S. practice demand, Thomson Reuters Institute Law Firm Financial Index, second quarter 2025, as restated by the National Law Review on 20 August 2025. Litigation led the tracked practices. Am Law 100 demand overall was down 0.6 percent in the same recap.

National Law Review, 20 August 2025, restating Thomson Reuters Institute LFFI Q2 2025.

Bloomberg Law, on 10 February 2026, the day of the Nashville launch, described Kirkland litigation as running at a $3 billion revenue clip on an annualized basis, with a nationwide litigation growth strategy to continue in 2026. The Philadelphia office, opened 21 January 2025 as a product-liability, mass-torts and commercial-litigation launch, had grown to 25 attorneys by 10 June 2026 and had added corporate laterals; the 2026 summer class was three. Nashville opened 10 February 2026 as litigation plus transactional. Those are geographic bets on the trial seat, independent of whether a 2026 associate-raise memo exists.

Two Fifth Circuit decisions removed compliance builds that a funds or antitrust associate might otherwise have been hired to staff. On 5 June 2024, in National Association of Private Fund Managers v. SEC, No. 23-60471, the court vacated in full the SEC's private-fund adviser rules, including preferential-treatment, restricted-activities, quarterly-statement, adviser-led secondaries and audit rules. That does not remove secondaries deal work. On 19 March 2026, in Chamber of Commerce v. FTC, No. 26-40094, the Fifth Circuit denied the FTC's stay; the Eastern District of Texas had vacated the expanded HSR form, and filers returned to the pre-February 2025 form. 2026 HSR thresholds and filing fees were unaffected. Second-request and merger-litigation demand was not vacated. A general counsel still needs antitrust counsel on a $55 billion take-private; the form-drafting hours lighten.

Other clocks run the other way. Directive (EU) 2024/927 set an AIFMD II transposition deadline of 16 April 2026; Skadden's 15 April 2026 roundup treated Level 1 as live, with non-essential Level 2 acts delayed by the European Commission until after 1 October 2027. Loan-originating AIFs picked up leverage caps and a 5 percent risk-retention rule; open-ended funds must pick at least two liquidity-management tools. The United Kingdom is writing a post-Brexit AIFM regime on its own clock — that mechanism belongs to a London page; the hiring consequence here is a London funds and Luxembourg-coordination seat, which Kirkland publicly staffed in 2025. Treasury's outbound investment security program became effective 2 January 2025, covering U.S. person investments into China, Hong Kong and Macau entities in semiconductors, quantum and AI. Delaware Senate Bill 21, signed 25 March 2025, rewrote DGCL sections 144 and 220 the same day: safe harbors for conflicted going-private deals, and a narrower books-and-records right. Electronic Arts and Hologic are Delaware corporations in the merger papers. The Federal Open Market Committee, on 17 September 2025, lowered the target range ¼ percentage point to 4 to 4¼ percent, a cheaper-debt backdrop for the leveraged-finance hours that follow a take-private, not a first-year campus story.

Capital cycleNamed-officer need

  1. Fewer, larger deals Private-equity value up, count down. Midlevels on live take-privates, debt-finance and antitrust, not a campus surge.
  2. Rules that vanish, rules that bite Vacated fund-adviser and HSR-form builds on one side; AIFMD II, outbound investment and Delaware going-private safe harbors on the other.
  3. The in-house signature Trade, tariffs, AI and a named officer at close. Headcount stays flat until the board wants a general counsel in the room.
06 How the searches close

What Chicago associate searches actually do with this grid

Sartori & Partners has worked the Chicago legal market for eight years, for companies that need an in-house lawyer and for firms that need an associate. Over the trailing three years we closed 26 associate searches on this line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

Sartori & Partners maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The Chicago associate desk is one cut of that program, not a second census. Mandate telemetry on this line is 26 closed files over three years — tens, not hundreds — because those are mandates, not interviews.

Of 26 closed Chicago associate searches over three years, 8 were company-side mandates whose candidate profile was a lockstep-scale associate — private-equity, funds or litigation midlevels the general counsel wanted on payroll rather than on a panel. Eighteen were firm-side associate seats. Of those 18, 11 were years 3–6 in private equity, funds or corporate M&A. The remaining firm-side files sat in litigation and other corporate seats. Completions: 24 of 26. Both files that did not complete were inside the 8 company-side searches. Three of those 8 ran past 12 weeks because the buyer would not price above associate-general-counsel median cash. That is the slow segment on this line, and it is ours: we do not place quickly when the requisition is an attorney grade and the candidate is a fourth-year.

Across 325 structured interviews with Chicago associates and in-house counsel, 41 of 72 in-house hiring managers — general counsel, deputy general counsel and heads of legal at companies — over a 24-month window named years 4–6 lockstep associates as the seat they cannot price on an associate-general-counsel requisition without a title jump. A deputy general counsel at a PE-backed Midwest industrials platform told us they can clear associate-general-counsel total cash at the ACC median and cannot clear a fifth-year lockstep base without taking the title to deputy general counsel and reopening the compensation committee. A chief legal officer at a Chicago-listed consumer company said they will keep using the Kirkland invoice on take-privates and mass-torts and will not open a senior-counsel requisition until the next budget cycle.

Sartori's quarterly survey since 2019, in the four waves from the first quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, found that 29 of 51 Chicago company respondents who had tried to hire a lockstep midlevel onto an in-house attorney or senior-attorney grade reported the first cash offer rejected. Median offer-to-acceptance on the associate line remains 11 working days when the cash is real. Counter-offer incidence on the same 26 files is 35 percent. Firms defend. Companies that have not decided whether they are buying a title or buying an invoice use those 11 days to discover the gap, and then they stall.

Three recent Chicago files, anonymized composites, show the same arithmetic from the inside. No real company, firm or candidate is named.

  • A PE-backed healthcare platform, associate general counsel. The brief was a fourth- or fifth-year private-equity M&A associate off a lockstep scale, to sit in Chicago and own sponsor-backed add-ons. We closed in 10 weeks. The incumbent firm counter-offered. The candidate signed on day 11, once the company put the title at associate general counsel and the cash at deputy-general-counsel median total, plus a modest equity grant. An attorney-grade first draft of the same requisition had died in week four.
  • A public consumer company, first in-house funds counsel. The general counsel wanted a sixth-year funds associate who had seen secondaries and continuation vehicles, not a staff attorney who had seen vendor contracts. We closed in 8 weeks on an associate-general-counsel title. The package cleared because equity, not the base, did the work the ACC median could not.
  • An industrial sponsor, stalled. The head of legal insisted on a fifth-year at associate-general-counsel median base, with no title jump. The process ran to week 14 and did not complete. It is one of the two incomplete files in the 26. We should have declined the brief at week two, when the compensation committee had already said no to deputy-general-counsel cash. We did not. That is on us.

NALP's 8 April 2026 statement on law-student recruiting still constrains how any U.S. firm, this one included, runs 1L and 2L campus processes: no interference with classes and exams, particular care in the first semester, reasonable offer windows. Kirkland's own U.S. laterals page asks for a resume and a law-school transcript; the transcript is a credential gate, not a courtesy. None of that substitutes for a 2026 associate-raise memo, and none of it prices an in-house offer. The service view of the company-side book sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page; the associate-line process sits on associate recruiting. Companies building a legal function from nothing should start with the first general counsel guide before they try to mark a lockstep midlevel to an attorney grade.

Kirkland pay: what is public in 2026, from both sides of the offer

What is the Kirkland & Ellis salary for associates in 2026?

No 2026 Kirkland associate scale is public. Kirkland's last published U.S. associate base is the 30 November 2023 memo (effective 1 January 2024), from $225,000 for a first-year through $420,000 for a seventh-year. Above the Law printed that raise the same day; the ABA Journal listed the firm among Cravath matchers and restated the grid through the class of 2018. The 2026 market lockstep that starts at $235,000 is a Milbank table, effective 1 July 2026. Kirkland does not appear on Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard through 31 August 2026, so a 2026 Kirkland first-year figure is not public and is not estimated here.

What was the Kirkland bonus for associates in 2025?

Kirkland is not a listed row on Above the Law's 2025 bonus scorecard as accessed in 2026. The last dated market bonus ladder is Cravath's 18 November 2025 year-end plus special scale, combining to about $21,000 for a first-year (before proration) through $140,000 for the class of 2018 and senior. Historical Above the Law coverage describes Kirkland bonuses as individualized and typically at or above the New York market; that is a structure fact, not a 2025 dollar amount, and it is not a 2025 Kirkland memo.

What is Kirkland PEP on the 2026 Am Law 100?

The 2026 Am Law 100, covering fiscal 2025, put Kirkland profits per equity partner at $11.121 million, up 20.19 percent. That is an ALM average for equity partners, not take-home for any named partner and not an associate paycheck. Revenue per lawyer on the same print was $2.547 million. Wachtell sat above Kirkland on PEP at $12.152 million. Legal Business, 19 March 2026, called the PEP print a record $11.1 million.

How much must a general counsel offer to hire a Kirkland associate in-house?

A fourth-year on Kirkland's last published scale (30 November 2023 memo) already earns a $310,000 base, above the 2025 ACC associate-general-counsel median base of $245,000. The same 2025 survey, the latest edition published as of September 2026, put deputy-general-counsel median base at $280,000 and median total cash at $368,000 — still below a seventh-year's $420,000 published base. Chief legal officers at companies with revenue above $5 billion are the first in-house band whose median total target exceeds $1 million. Title, not a quiet premium on an attorney-grade requisition, is what usually closes the gap.

What does Kirkland pay newly qualified solicitors in London?

Legal Cheek's 2026 firm profile lists Kirkland London newly qualified pay at £175,000, stated as the internal conversion of the $225,000 U.S. NQ. First-year trainees are listed at £70,000 and second-year trainees at £75,000. The same profile counts 15 training-contract places and an 87 percent latest trainee retention rate. Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 NQ league table independently listed the firm at £175,000, against Magic Circle NQ at £150,000.

Did Kirkland match the 2026 Milbank associate scale?

Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard, through 31 August 2026, does not list Kirkland among matching firms. Milbank announced the $235,000–$455,000 ladder on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026. Norton Rose Fulbright's 1 July 2026 match printed the full class-year grid for firms that did match. A 2026 Kirkland first-year figure is not on that scorecard, and Kirkland's published $225,000 first-year remains the 2023 figure.

Associate bases are Kirkland's 30 November 2023 memo as printed by Above the Law and the ABA Journal. The 2026 $235,000–$455,000 ladder is the Milbank market scale, used here only as a bound: Kirkland is not on Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard through 31 August 2026. Bonus dollars are Cravath's 18 November 2025 market, not a Kirkland memo. In-house medians are the Association of Corporate Counsel 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey (1,632 respondents), the latest edition published as of 30 September 2026. Am Law 100 figures are 2025 fiscal-year results published in 2026. Pirical headcounts via Global Legal Post are a separate cut from the ALM lawyer count. LSEG and Bloomberg M&A values use different league-table methods. April 2025 political pledges are an aggregate $940 million in Global Legal Post's recap, not a reason the associate scale moved.

Our own numbers — the Chicago interview cohort, the associate-line mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.

A quiet conversation

Matching a lockstep-scale lawyer on an in-house offer?

We tell a general counsel when the title will not clear the candidate, and we tell an associate when the company is buying an invoice rather than a seat. Chicago associate and in-house searches, confidential, no obligation.
