Kobre & Kim Salary: The Posted Range (2026)
The U.S. associate cash a reader can open is a Workday range, $260,000 to $420,000, published 9 January 2026. That date is before the 1 July 2026 market scale. Revenue per lawyer for fiscal 2025 is a separate number, $2,132,000, and profits per equity partner are not in the printed leader list.
Two documents. One January range.
Kobre & Kim salary is the range on the firm's own U.S. posting, $260,000 to $420,000, dated 9 January 2026. A general counsel matching an investigations hire, and the associate who earns the seat, are reading that posting against a market scale that moved on 1 July 2026.
The U.S. civil-litigation posting published 9 January 2026 prints a full-time floor of $260,000. That date is before Milbank’s 2 June 2026 announcement. Workday listing ↗
Four numbers, two buyers. The associate reads a posting dated before 1 July 2026. The general counsel reads a 2025 in-house median. Every figure is cited below.

Open the careers board first. The 2026 market scale is a different document, and it moved after these U.S. ranges were published.
Three U.S. attorney listings carry a dollar range. The San Francisco litigation associate listing was published 2 January 2026 at $260,000 to $420,000. The civil-litigation associate listing for U.S. offices, shown as a New York listing, was published 9 January 2026 at the same band. The bankruptcy-litigation associate listing for U.S. offices was published 19 May 2026 at $260,000 to $390,000. Each listing says the range is for a full-time schedule and that other compensation may include an annual discretionary bonus. Each describes that bonus as a calculation tied to business development, ideas, and client relationships, rather than to hours above a target. None of the three listings is labeled a first-year seat.
| Listing | Published | Range printed | What else the listing says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civil litigation associate, U.S. offices | 9 January 2026 | $260,000–$420,000 | New York listing; discretionary bonus |
| Litigation associate, San Francisco | 2 January 2026 | $260,000–$420,000 | Same band as the U.S. civil posting |
| Bankruptcy litigation associate, U.S. offices | 19 May 2026 | $260,000–$390,000 | Posted before the 2 June market move |
| Litigation associate, London | 16 September 2026 | Not printed | 4–6 years PQE; three office days a week |
| Analyst I, London (litigation support) | 21 September 2026 | £54,000 | Not a solicitor salary |
Click a column header to re-rank. Milbank announced the 2026 market raise on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026, with increases of $10,000 for first- through fourth-years and $20,000 for fifth- through eighth-years, as Biglaw Investor records that announcement. The three U.S. ranges above were already on the board.
Vault’s 2026 firm profile prints a seniority column of $225,000, $235,000, $260,000, $310,000, $365,000, $390,000, $420,000, and $435,000. That is Biglaw Investor’s 2025 market row, cell for cell, including an eighth-year step of $435,000. It is not Biglaw Investor’s 2026 row. The same Vault profile lists total attorneys as 100 to 150 and dates that headcount 2023, lists two partners named in 2026, and lists a billable-hour field of 1,900. The Workday postings do not restate an hours gate. A directory column that reproduces the prior market, including a first-year the postings do not use as a floor, is a directory column.
| Seniority | 2025 market base | 2026 market base | Against the Kobre postings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st year | $225,000 | $235,000 | Not a floor on the 2026 U.S. postings |
| 2nd year | $235,000 | $245,000 | Not a floor on the 2026 U.S. postings |
| 3rd year | $260,000 | $270,000 | 2025 cell is the floor of the U.S. postings |
| 4th year | $310,000 | $320,000 | Inside the civil range; not an endpoint |
| 5th year | $365,000 | $385,000 | Inside the civil and bankruptcy ranges |
| 6th year | $390,000 | $410,000 | 2025 cell is the 19 May 2026 bankruptcy cap |
| 7th year | $420,000 | $440,000 | 2025 cell is the January 2026 civil cap |
| 8th year | $435,000 | $455,000 | Not an endpoint on a Kobre posting |
Above the Law’s 1 July 2026 account of the Norton Rose Fulbright match printed the same market in class-year form: $235,000 for the class of 2026 through $455,000 for the class of 2018. The floor and the cap agree with Biglaw Investor’s 2026 seniority row. The three dollars that cap or floor a Kobre posting — $260,000, $390,000, and $420,000 — are on the 2025 row and are not cells on the 2026 row.

- The listing you can open A full-time range, a published date, and a sentence that a bonus may be discretionary. That is the firm’s own 2026 U.S. cash document.
- The directory column A seniority ladder that matches the prior market, including a first-year the postings do not use as a floor.
- The July scale A later market ladder exists. A posting dated before that ladder is not a refusal, and it is not a match.
What a general counsel must actually bid
The associate on that posting is paid by the firm. The general counsel who wants the same lawyer on the company payroll is bidding the 2025 ACC medians, by title, against a base range that was already public in January.
The posted floor already clears median associate-general-counsel base. The Association of Corporate Counsel 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey — 1,632 respondents, executive summary published 16 September 2025 — put U.S. associate-general-counsel median base at $245,000 and median total cash at $294,000. The 9 January 2026 floor is $260,000 of base, $15,000 above that median base, and the $294,000 total-cash median still sits $16,000 under the 2025 market fourth-year base of $310,000. A company that offers the associate-general-counsel total-cash median as if it were base has cleared the floor and has not cleared a fourth-year.
Deputy-general-counsel median base on the same survey was $280,000, which clears the posted floor by $20,000 and sits $30,000 under the 2025 fourth-year cell. Deputy-general-counsel median total cash was $368,000. That cash figure sits $22,000 under the 19 May 2026 bankruptcy cap of $390,000 and $52,000 under the January civil cap of $420,000. The cap is base. The survey’s total cash already includes bonus. A package that loses on total cash to someone else’s base has not started the conversation about the discretionary bonus the posting refuses to number. Chief legal officers at companies with revenue greater than $5 billion are the first in-house band whose median total target exceeds $1 million, per the same 2025 survey. That is the band that can absorb a $420,000 base plus a bonus the firm has not published.
AGC median base
Association of Corporate Counsel 2025 survey. The 9 January 2026 floor is $15,000 above this base.
ACC 2025 survey PDF ↗The 2026 ACC Chief Legal Officers Survey, 1,049 participants, is why many companies never open the requisition. 63 percent of chief legal officers expect legal-department headcount to remain stable. Use of outside counsel was 48 percent. A conflicts-free disputes firm is built for the invoice that choice keeps outside the building. Chambers USA 2026 describes the practice as conflicts-free and limited to disputes and investigations, lists 7 ranked departments and 12 ranked individuals, and places offices in New York, Delaware, Miami, San Francisco, São Paulo, Washington, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Dubai, London, and Tel Aviv. The firm’s homepage prints the same city list. A general counsel who wants a cross-border investigations lawyer is not posting a generic commercial-litigation seat, and a headcount freeze does not retire the matter.
The arithmetic is the hiring problem. An attorney-grade requisition priced on the $148,000 attorney median, or a senior-attorney requisition priced on the $201,000 median, does not clear a $260,000 floor. An associate-general-counsel requisition priced on median base does not clear it either. Deputy-general-counsel cash starts a conversation with the floor and loses the cap. The $1 million large-company chief-legal-officer band is the first survey total that can carry the cap and still leave room for equity. Title is the compensation decision.
The firm pays the rangeThe company pays the seat
- Payroll at the firm The associate earns a point inside a posted range, plus a discretionary bonus the listing does not number.
- The panel invoice Headcount stays flat. Investigations, asset recovery, and enforcement defense stay on the outside firm.
- The in-house offer Title and cash have to clear a midlevel floor that already beats associate-general-counsel median base.
If you want the lawyer, price the title. If you want the matter, keep the invoice.
- Date the posting. The U.S. ranges were published in January and May 2026. The market scale moved on 1 July. Ask whether the range was refreshed. Do not assume either answer.
- Write the title first. Associate general counsel on median base loses to the floor. Deputy general counsel starts to talk to the floor and loses the cap.
- Do not match a bonus you cannot read. The listing calls the bonus discretionary. Cravath’s November 2025 ladder is a different firm.
- Name the alternative. Holding headcount flat, which 63 percent of chief legal officers expected in the 2026 ACC survey, and sending the next investigation to the panel, is a choice. Make it on purpose.
Your posting is the number the company can see. Your bonus is the number it cannot.
- Lead with the range your listing actually prints. A civil seat and a bankruptcy seat are not the same cap. $420,000 and $390,000 are different documents.
- Ignore the directory first-year. Vault still prints $225,000. The three 2026 U.S. attorney listings start at $260,000.
- Do not resign into a guessed July match. The 2026 third-year market cell is $270,000. The posting floor is the prior third-year cell. Those are different facts.
- London is not a solicitor scale. The September associate listing prints no salary. £54,000 is an analyst role.
The posted floor already clears median associate-general-counsel base.
Revenue per lawyer, the missing PEP, and London cash
Associate cash is a posting. Partner pay, on the public record, is a revenue-per-lawyer figure. London solicitor cash is a blank.
Above the Law, on 5 May 2026, reprinting the 2026 Am Law 200 for fiscal 2025, listed this firm’s revenue per lawyer at $2,132,000, the first of the five RPL figures in that note. The Second Hundred average RPL on the same note was $895,000, up 5.2 percent. $2,132,000 is 2.38 times that average. The May 2025 Second Hundred note had listed the firm at $1,951,000. The step from $1,951,000 to $2,132,000 is 9.3 percent, against a cohort average RPL gain of 5.2 percent. Above the Law’s 15 April 2026 Am Law 100 reprint put Cravath at $2,255,000 and Kirkland at $2,547,000 of revenue per lawyer. The disputes firm’s fiscal 2025 figure sits in that neighborhood. Revenue per lawyer is revenue divided by lawyers. It is not a rate card, and it is not a partner’s draw.
Profits per equity partner were not in the five PEP figures that 5 May note printed. Those five started at $6,350,000. The Second Hundred average PEP was $1,207,826, up 9.5 percent, on gross revenue of $29,439,024,512, up 6 percent. The average is a hundred-firm mean. Using it as this firm’s partner pay would invent the number the ranking did not print. Vault’s directory lists two partners named in 2026 and does not print their compensation. A company budgeting a lateral partner conversation at this platform does not have a PEP cell to underwrite. The associate range is the cash document. The RPL figure is the reason the invoice is expensive.
Headcount does not rescue the gap. Vault’s profile lists 100 to 150 attorneys and dates that band 2023. The 5 May 2026 note did not print a lawyer count beside the $2,132,000. Dividing revenue per lawyer into a headcount the ranking omitted is arithmetic without a numerator. Chambers USA 2026 and the firm homepage do supply geography: 15 cities, from New York and Washington through London, Hong Kong, Seoul, the Cayman Islands, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. On 12 February 2026 the firm announced that Chambers Global Guide 2026 had recognized it. That announcement is a ranking note. It is not a compensation table.
London cash is the blank. The litigation-associate listing published 16 September 2026, after the U.S. market scale had already moved, asks for four to six years’ post-qualification experience, expects three days a week in the office, and prints no salary. The Analyst I litigation-support listing published 21 September 2026 prints £54,000, plus eligibility for a discretionary bonus. That role is not a solicitor seat, and a general counsel matching a U.S. investigations associate should not convert £54,000 into a London comparator. There is no newly qualified salary on these listings to set beside a Magic Circle or U.S.-London NQ figure. The London hire the firm is advertising is an experienced disputes solicitor, on a number the listing leaves to the offer.
The 2025–2026 enforcement docket that still prices the seat
Demand for a conflicts-free investigations lawyer is a dated docket, not a mood. The in-house question is which of those matters still needs a signature inside the company.
The Justice Department’s Fraud Section Year in Review for 2025 charged 265 individuals and convicted 235. Corporate enforcement was 15 actions, including 12 resolutions, the first corporate indictments from the section in over 15 years, and global monetary amounts of more than $1.01 billion, of which U.S. criminal monetary amounts were more than $553.2 million. The FCPA Unit, 22 prosecutors, described a February 2025 pause and then the June 2025 guidelines: cartels and transnational criminal organizations, harm to U.S. competitive opportunities, national security, and substantial bribe payments. The docket narrowed by design and did not go to zero. In June 2025 the same section led a health-care fraud takedown that charged 324 individuals, including 96 licensed medical professionals, with intended loss exceeding $14.6 billion.
The SEC’s own release 2026-34, issued 7 April 2026 for the fiscal year ended 30 September 2025, filed 456 enforcement actions, including 303 standalone actions and 69 follow-on proceedings, and obtained orders for $17.9 billion in monetary relief: $10.8 billion of disgorgement and prejudgment interest and $7.2 billion of penalties. The Commission then printed the adjustment a reader has to use. After excluding amounts deemed satisfied by a parallel court order, and the Stanford judgments, fiscal 2025 monetary relief was $1.4 billion of disgorgement and prejudgment interest and $1.3 billion of penalties. About two-thirds of standalone actions charged one or more individuals. The Commission obtained 119 officer-and-director bars and returned about $262 million to harmed investors. Tips, complaints, and referrals were 53,753, nearly 19 percent above the prior fiscal year. A $17.9 billion headline is in that release. Adding the two adjusted lines the Commission printed, $1.4 billion and $1.3 billion, comes to $2.7 billion. A general counsel staffing an investigations seat should budget that sum and still staff the individual-charge docket.
That mix is the company-side brief. Fewer corporate resolutions, more individual charges, a cross-border fraud emphasis, and a health-care takedown measured in billions. The lawyer who has lived on the firm side of that docket is the person a chief legal officer calls when the next inquiry arrives. The 2026 ACC survey says most departments will not add headcount to receive it. The firm’s own May 2026 bankruptcy listing, still open on the pre-July range, is the market saying insolvency disputes did not pause when the FCPA guidelines narrowed. A general counsel choosing between a deputy-general-counsel offer and another year on the panel is choosing between those two documents: the posted range, and the 63 percent who expect the roster to stay the same size.
Agency docketNamed-officer need
- Narrower corporate resolutions 15 Fraud Section corporate actions in 2025, and an SEC release that tells the reader to strip the headline.
- Individual charges 235 Fraud Section convictions. About two-thirds of SEC standalone actions charged a person.
- The in-house signature The panel keeps the trial. The company opens a seat when a named officer has to own the response.
What New York associate searches do with this range
Sartori & Partners has worked the New York legal market for more than 10 years, for companies that need an investigations lawyer on payroll and for firms that need a disputes associate. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches on this line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.
Sartori & Partners maps 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The New York associate desk is one cut of that work. Sartori has worked this market for more than 10 years. The New York interview cohort is 1,675 structured interviews. The New York map covers about 67,000 lawyers. Mandate telemetry on this line is 33 closed files over three years, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, because those are mandates, not interviews.
Of those 33 closed New York associate searches, 9 were company-side mandates whose candidate profile was an investigations, enforcement, or insolvency associate. 24 were firm-side associate seats. Of the firm-side seats, 14 were years 3–6. Completion on the line is 93 percent. 4 of the company-side files ran past the usual window because the buyer would not price above associate-general-counsel median cash. That is the slow segment on this line: an attorney-grade requisition against a third-year floor.
Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York associates and in-house counsel, 58 of 140 in-house hiring managers — general counsel, deputy general counsel, and heads of legal — over a 24-month window named years 4–6 investigations associates as the seat they cannot price on an associate-general-counsel requisition without a title jump. A deputy general counsel at a PE-backed New York fintech told us they can clear associate-general-counsel total cash at the survey median and cannot clear a fifth-year disputes base without taking the title to deputy general counsel and reopening the compensation committee. A chief legal officer at a NASDAQ-listed payments company said they will keep the conflicts-free firm on the investigations panel and will not open a senior-counsel requisition until the next budget cycle.
Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, in the 4 waves from the first quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, found that 22 of 47 New York company respondents who had tried to hire a disputes midlevel onto an attorney or senior-attorney grade reported the first cash offer rejected. Median offer-to-acceptance on the associate line is 11 working days when the cash is real. Counter-offer incidence on the same 33 files is 37 percent. Firms on this economics defend a midlevel who already carries a live matter. Companies that have not decided whether they are buying a title or buying an invoice use that window to discover the gap.
Three recent New York files show the same arithmetic from the inside. No real company or candidate is named.
- A NASDAQ-listed payments company, investigations counsel. The brief was a fourth- or fifth-year investigations associate, to sit in New York and own regulatory inquiries the panel had been running. We closed in 9 weeks. The incumbent firm counter-offered. The candidate signed on day 11, once the company put the title at investigations counsel and moved cash off associate-general-counsel median base. A senior-counsel first draft of the same requisition had died in week 4.
- A PE-backed healthcare platform, associate general counsel for government investigations. The general counsel wanted a lawyer who had lived through a health-care fraud inquiry, not a commercial litigator who had read the press release. We closed in 8 weeks on an associate-general-counsel title. Equity, not the base, did the work the survey median could not.
- A family-owned industrial group, stalled. The head of legal insisted on a fifth-year at associate-general-counsel median base, with no title jump. The process ran to week 14 and did not complete. We should have declined the brief in week 2, when the compensation committee had already refused deputy-general-counsel cash. We did not. That file is one of the company-side searches that did not finish, and the miss is ours.
The service view of the company-side book sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page. The associate-line process sits on associate recruiting. The market ladder these postings predate is on the 2026 associate scale. The revenue-per-lawyer print is on the Am Law 200 table. A general counsel comparing the in-house bands themselves should read the general counsel salary page before marking a $420,000 cap to an attorney grade.
Kobre pay in 2026, from both sides of the offer
What is the Kobre & Kim salary for associates in 2026?
The firm’s U.S. civil-litigation posting, published 9 January 2026, states a full-time base range of $260,000 to $420,000, and says other compensation may include a discretionary bonus. The San Francisco litigation posting of 2 January 2026 prints the same band. The bankruptcy posting of 19 May 2026 prints $260,000 to $390,000. All three dates fall before Milbank’s 2 June 2026 announcement of the scale that took effect 1 July 2026. Vault’s 2026 directory column still prints the 2025 market steps, $225,000 through $435,000. That column is a directory. It is not a memorandum from the firm.
What bonus does the firm pay associates?
The U.S. postings say other compensation may include an annual discretionary bonus, and they describe the calculation as rewarding business development, ideas, and client relationships rather than hours above a target. No class-year bonus dollar is on those postings. The last dated market bonus ladder a company can read is Cravath’s 18 November 2025 year-end plus special scale, about $21,000 combined for a first-year through $140,000 for the class of 2018 and senior. That ladder is the market. It is not this firm’s check.
What do partners at the firm earn?
Above the Law’s 5 May 2026 note on the 2026 Am Law 200 put revenue per lawyer at $2,132,000 for fiscal 2025, up from $1,951,000 on the May 2025 Second Hundred list. Profits per equity partner for this firm were not among the five PEP figures that note printed. The Second Hundred average PEP on the same note was $1,207,826. That average is the cohort. It is not a draw at this firm.
How much must a general counsel offer to hire one of these associates in-house?
The posted floor of $260,000 already sits above the 2025 ACC associate-general-counsel median base of $245,000. Associate-general-counsel median total cash on that survey is $294,000, which still sits under the 2025 market fourth-year base of $310,000. Deputy-general-counsel median total cash is $368,000, under both the $390,000 bankruptcy cap and the $420,000 civil cap. Chief legal officers at companies with revenue above $5 billion are the first in-house band whose median total target exceeds $1 million.
What does the firm pay in London?
The London litigation-associate listing published 16 September 2026 asks for four to six years’ post-qualification experience and does not print a salary. The only sterling figure on the firm’s 2026 London careers board is £54,000 for an Analyst I litigation-support role, published 21 September 2026. That is not a solicitor salary. A U.S. in-house offer should not be marked to it.
Did the firm match the July 2026 associate scale?
No memorandum from the firm is among the documents cited here. The U.S. ranges a reader can open were posted on 2 January, 9 January, and 19 May 2026, before Milbank’s 2 June announcement. Their endpoints match the 2025 market third-year, sixth-year, and seventh-year cells. On Biglaw Investor’s 2026 seniority row the third-year is $270,000, the sixth-year is $410,000, and the seventh-year is $440,000. A posting that predates the raise is not a refusal, and it is not a match.
How long does a New York company search for this profile take?
Sartori’s New York associate desk closes on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, at a 93 percent completion rate, across 33 closed searches over three years. Median offer-to-acceptance on that line is 11 working days. The files that stall are the ones still priced at associate-general-counsel median base against a midlevel disputes associate.
The listings, the survey, and the Am Law print.
Associate cash comes from the firm’s 2026 careers listings and from the market tables those listings line up with. In-house medians come from the Association of Corporate Counsel. Revenue per lawyer comes from the 2026 Am Law 200 as Above the Law printed it.

U.S. ranges are the firm’s Workday listings published 2 January, 9 January, and 19 May 2026. The 2026 seniority scale of $235,000–$455,000 is Biglaw Investor’s market row for the 1 July 2026 scale, used here as a bound: it is not a memorandum from this firm. Vault’s 2026 column matches the 2025 market row. Bonus dollars cited as a ladder are Cravath’s 18 November 2025 market, not a Kobre check. In-house medians are the ACC 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey. Revenue per lawyer is fiscal 2025, Above the Law, 5 May 2026. Profits per equity partner for this firm were not in that note’s list of five.
Our own numbers — the New York interview cohort, the associate-line mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence, and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page.
