Latham Watkins Salary 2026: The January Class-Year Letter

On 30 September 2026, Latham's own careers page still published a 1 January U.S. class-year table: $225,000 for the Class of 2026 through $435,000 for the Class of 2018. This page is for the associate who earns those cells and the general counsel who has to match them.

The dated letter is the number. Pick a class year.

A general counsel who has to match a Latham & Watkins salary in 2026 is matching a dated class-year letter, not a rumor and not the June market floor.

Sartori maps roughly 23,000 lawyers in Los Angeles. Across 575 structured interviews with Los Angeles partners and counsel, 97 of 168 — general counsel, chief legal officer, deputy, or head of legal — over a 24-month window named the published class-year letter as the figure they had to defend to a compensation committee.

Revenue and PEP are the 2026 Am Law 100 print for FY2025, not a paycheck. The 1,900-hour gate is the January 2025 announcement for 2024 performance, not a 2026 ladder. Base cells live in the decoder and in the letter below. Sartori & Partners maps 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles; the Los Angeles desk is one city cut of that file. Quarterly market surveys have run since 2019.

02 The 2026 letter

Latham associate salary, cell by cell, as the firm still prints it.

The careers page says the U.S. payroll table is updated 1 January of each year. Accessed 30 September 2026, it is still that January letter.

Latham’s published 2026 first-year base is still $225,000. The same cell applies to the Class of 2025. From there the letter steps $235,000, $260,000, $310,000, $365,000, $390,000, $420,000, and $435,000 for the Class of 2018. Summer associates are paid $9,375 semi-monthly on the same page; twenty-four semi-monthly periods annualize to $225,000, which is the first-year cell, though the firm does not print an annual summer figure. Clerkship progression credit and a bonus are mentioned without a dollar; an additional bonus for a U.S. Supreme Court clerk is mentioned the same way.

Latham & Watkins U.S. associate class-year letter, as published on the firm’s Salary Benefits page and accessed 30 September 2026. The page states the scale is updated 1 January of each year. Class-year labels (Class of 2024, Class of 2025) are the firm’s own seniority rows on that 2026 letter, not a prior pay scale. Summer pay is semi-monthly; all other cells are annual U.S. payroll. Class year Seniority U.S. payroll How the page states it
Summer associate Summer $9,375 semi-monthly

Class of 2025 2nd year $225,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2024 3rd year $235,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2023 4th year $260,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2022 5th year $310,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2021 6th year $365,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2020 7th year $390,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2019 8th year $420,000 U.S. payroll
Class of 2018 8th year & senior $435,000 U.S. payroll

This is Latham’s published 2026 U.S. lockstep base. It is not a bonus scale, not London NQ pay, and not PEP. Individual total cash depends on hours, bonus eligibility, and class-year credit — none of which this letter prices.

NALP’s Associate Salary Survey is biennial. The private-sector salaries index, accessed 30 September 2026, still leads with the June 2025 Bulletin+. There is no 2026 edition, so these medians stay labeled as of 1 January 2025 and are not a 2026 market print. In that 2025 survey, $225,000 was the most frequently reported first-year figure: 32.0 percent of all offices and 44.7 percent of offices in firms of 701 or more lawyers. The overall median first-year base was $200,000; in firms of more than 700 lawyers the median was $215,000. Six of 19 analyzed cities already had a $225,000 median, including Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, San Francisco, and the Washington, D.C. area. Los Angeles / Orange County accounted for 10.4 percent of all $225,000 observations, from 27 reporting offices. The ABA Journal, on 29 May 2025, noted 437 responding firms and attributed flat medians since 2023 to waning talent-war pressure. Latham’s still-live 2026 letter therefore prints the 2025 mode, not a new floor.

Three dated published scales, not a hiring conclusion. Latham = careers letter accessed 30 September 2026 (still the 1 January 2026 table). Cravath 2026 bases = ABA Journal, 19 November 2025, from the 18 November 2025 memo (seven rungs; no Class of 2018 cell). Cravath is not a named row on the 2026 raise scorecard accessed 30 September 2026, so that November 2025 memo remains the published Cravath 2026 base. Milbank = Bloomberg Law, 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026 per Global Legal Post, 3 June 2026.
Rung Latham (1 Jan 2026 letter) Cravath (18 Nov 2025 memo) Milbank (effective 1 Jul 2026)
First-year base $225,000 $225,000 $235,000
Top published base $435,000 $420,000 $455,000

The Class of 2018 cell sits $15,000 above Cravath’s 2026 top. At year one the same letter sits $10,000 below the June 2026 market floor; at the senior rung it sits $20,000 below. Above the Law’s running scorecard, opened 5 June 2026 and accessed 30 September 2026, lists Milbank as first mover and names full-scale or near-full matches including McDermott, Hueston Hennigan, Quinn Emanuel, Sullivan & Cromwell (26 June), and Norton Rose Fulbright (30 June). Ice Miller (10 August) and McKool Smith (18 August) deferred the new scale to 1 January 2027. Massumi + Consoli matched on 31 August, effective 1 September. Troutman Pepper Locke, on 17 September, set a partial match effective 1 January 2027: $235,000 at class year 1 and $320,000 at class year 4. Latham & Watkins is not a named row. On 26 August 2026, 85 days after 2 June, Above the Law described most of the large-firm market as still on the prior letter. One hundred twenty days after 2 June, the same scorecard still does not name Latham. That compilation is not a census of every Am Law firm; it is the public record this page can cite. Latham’s own careers table, accessed 30 September 2026, had not moved.

The published letter is the number a compensation committee can see; the June floor is not.

The associate earns a class year. The general counsel matches a title.

The payer of the $225,000-$435,000 table is Latham & Watkins LLP. When the same lawyer moves in-house, the buyer is a general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal who holds an ACC-surveyed title, not a lockstep cell.

Of 84 Los Angeles associates on a lockstep scale in the same interview cohort over that 24-month window, 60 said they would not move in-house unless total cash at least cleared their current class-year base. The published letter is the number a compensation committee can see; the June floor is not. A head of legal who opens a requisition at Attorney median total cash is not matching Latham. They are matching a different market.

The U.S. lockstep seat is a law-firm paycheck keyed to graduation year.

Latham Careers publishes a single U.S. payroll table for associates and summer associates. Bonuses on that page are merit-based and tied to associate and firm performance. The Associates Committee, described on the UK experienced-hire page as equal numbers of associates and partners, manages reviews, bonuses, and promotion recommendations. NALP’s Class of 2025 National Summary Report (tables copyright August 2026; status date 16 March 2026) counted 6,588 jobs at firms of 501 or more lawyers, 33.2 percent of private-practice jobs, with a full-time long-term median of $225,000 (n=6,017 with salary). That is the employer tier that pays this letter. Firms of 251–500 lawyers accounted for 1,243 jobs at a $185,000 median. Combined, 251-plus firms took 7,831 of 32,619 employed graduates. Judicial clerkships were 10.0 percent of jobs (3,253), with a federal clerkship median of $77,318.

NALP’s 5 August 2026 press release put the 501-plus share of law-firm jobs down from 34.2 percent for the Class of 2024: about 540 fewer graduates into that tier, about 940 fewer into private practice, and federal government employment excluding clerkships down 37.0 percent to about 690. More of a smaller class is competing for the seats that still print $225,000. Class of 2026 employment results are not published; this Class of 2025 report is the latest NALP national summary. The letter on Latham’s careers page is what those seats pay until the firm publishes a different one.

Companies hire this talent later, onto titles whose median cash sits below the letter.

The Association of Corporate Counsel / Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey (1,632 self-respondents; data effective 1 March 2025) is the last public title-level cash stack. It is a 2025 survey, not a 2026 scale. Attorney median total cash is $160,000 (90th $230,000). Senior Attorney is $228,000; Expert Attorney $260,000; Managing Attorney $283,000. Associate General Counsel median total cash is $294,000 (90th $450,000). Deputy General Counsel is $368,000. General Counsel / Chief Legal Officer median total cash is $410,000 (90th $764,000), on a median base of $330,000 with 96 percent short-term-incentive eligible at a 35 percent target. Attorney median total cash sits $65,000 below Latham’s first-year base. Associate General Counsel median total cash sits between Latham’s Class of 2023 base ($260,000) and Class of 2022 base ($310,000), before any Latham bonus.

An attorney with prior law-firm experience showed a median base 16 percent higher and total cash 18 percent higher than peers without. A chief legal officer with prior firm experience showed +21 percent base and +13 percent total cash. NALP put Class of 2025 business (in-house/corporate) jobs at 6.7 percent (2,180 jobs) with a $100,000 median. Companies almost never buy this talent at graduation. They buy it as a lateral onto an Associate General Counsel or deputy seat, which is why the matching problem lands on the general counsel, not on campus recruiting.

The 2026 ACC / Empsight survey is out, and its public write-up does not replace those dollar cells. Lexpert, on 17 September 2026, reported 1,627 U.S. in-house counsel and legal-operations respondents. Division and subsidiary general counsel posted the largest move in that write-up: base salary up 22 percent and total cash up 20 percent since 2023. General counsel and chief legal officers at large organizations had a median base 90 percent higher than peers at smaller companies. Among lawyers who were promoted, 16 percent reported a raise of 20 percent or more, and the majority saw pay rise by less than 10 percent. Attorney, Associate General Counsel, and GC/CLO median total cash are not in that write-up. The $160,000 and $294,000 cells above stay the 2025 survey.

In-house total cash by title, Association of Corporate Counsel / Empsight 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025. Medians; self-respondents. Not the 2026 edition: the September 2026 public write-up does not reprint these title medians. Attorney and Associate General Counsel cells are reserved for the matching axis in section 08.

ACC / Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey Executive Summary.

A general counsel at a private-equity-backed industrials platform told Sartori the compensation committee would approve Associate General Counsel cash up to the Latham Class of 2023 cell but would not approve the Class of 2022 cell without stripping bonus. That is the matching problem in one sentence: the in-house title can clear a fourth-year lockstep base, and it breaks on a fifth-year.

04 Latham bonus and the rest of cash

What sits on top of the letter is only partly public.

Base is a published class-year table. Bonus, clerkship cash, and London NQ sit in different documents, and one of them is missing.

Above the Law, on 30 January 2025, reported that Latham announced year-end bonuses for 2024 performance that week, with extra cash above the hours threshold already stated, base bonuses at market, median bonuses for every class year thousands of dollars above market, and top bonuses well above the market scale, paid 31 January 2025. That is the last fully dated Latham class-year cycle. It is not a 2026 bonus. The only extracted class-year dollars in that article are 2023-cycle tops, printed for comparison: a second-year top of $28,000 and a seventh-year top of $172,500. The 2024-cycle class-year chart on that page is an image; it is not transcribed here. ABA Journal, 19 November 2025, printed the Cravath year-end-plus-special ladder for the 2025 bonus season and noted the year-end rungs had been the same since 2021 — $15,000 plus a $6,000 special at the junior end, $115,000 plus $25,000 at the Class of 2018 end, in that Cravath memo. The 2026 special-bonus wave is a different instrument. Above the Law’s scorecard, accessed 30 September 2026, transcribes Milbank’s 27 July 2026 special bonus as $6,000 for the Class of 2026 and $25,000 for the Class of 2018 and special counsel, paid 31 August 2026, with no hours gate, and Cahill Gordon’s 24 September 2026 match as $6,000 for the Class of 2025 and $25,000 for the Class of 2018, payable 15 October 2026. The memo images are not re-transcribed. Latham is not a named row.

Clerkship cash is a hiring gate on the same seat, not a second employer. NALP’s 28 May 2025 Associate Salary Survey press release — the same biennial 2025 edition, not a 2026 survey — found that 73 percent of law offices offered judicial clerkship bonuses. Above the Law, on 21 July 2025, reported that Latham increased the signing bonus for all federal district and appellate clerkships to $125,000, with a second qualifying clerkship adding $25,000 ($150,000 total). No 2026 Latham clerkship-bonus memo was located. The careers page itself, accessed 30 September 2026, does not print those dollars; it states progression credit and a bonus, plus an additional bonus for a U.S. Supreme Court clerk, without a figure. The Supreme Court dollar is therefore not public on the letter, and the $125,000 figure stays labeled 21 July 2025. On 5 January 2026 the firm announced a US$25,000 Early Experience Stipend for students who join the 2027 Summer Associate Program and spend summer 2026 in qualifying non-profit, chambers, or academic legal work; 2026 1L summers are ineligible.

London is the same firm on a different regulator and a different payroll. Latham Careers UK, accessed 30 September 2026, prints a starting trainee salary of £60,000, rising to £65,000 in the second year, a £20,000 maintenance grant per PGDL or SQE course, and AAB A-level and 2:1 degree gates, with SQE via BPP. That page does not print a newly qualified salary, and no Latham document states a 2026 London NQ figure. The London office page, accessed the same day, states nearly 500 lawyers and Solicitors Regulation Authority authorization of Latham & Watkins (London) LLP (SRA No. 203820). Trainee sterling and the U.S. class-year letter are different payrolls.

Three public cash figures that are not one total-cash stack. The federal clerkship median is the Class of 2025 NALP report. The clerkship signing bonus is Above the Law, 21 July 2025, and no 2026 Latham update was located. The first-year base is the careers letter accessed 30 September 2026.

05 Latham PEP and the demand behind it

The letter is funded by clients, billed at rising rates.

A general counsel matching these cells is competing with a profit pool and a 2026 deal tape, not with a campus rumor.

Who funds the hoursWho writes the offer

  1. The client book Public companies, sponsors, lenders, and boards buy the hours. Their mandates are what make a lockstep letter payable.
  2. The firm payroll The class-year letter is a law-firm instrument. Base, hours gate, and promotion calendar all sit here.
  3. The in-house offer A general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal maps those cells onto a title, a bonus target, and a compensation-committee paper.

The FY2025 revenue and PEP cells in the opening grid are the 2026 Am Law 100 print. Above the Law’s 15 April 2026 recap ranks that revenue second, behind Kirkland at $10.556 billion and ahead of a drop to DLA Piper at $4.583 billion, and ranks that PEP sixth, behind Wachtell at $12.152 million and Kirkland at $11.121 million. Sixty-two firms cleared $1 billion in revenue (up from 58); Am Law 100 PEP rose 14 percent and revenue per lawyer 8.7 percent. Latham is not in the published RPL top ten in that recap; this page does not invent a 2025 Latham RPL. Legal Business, on 14 April 2026, reported London turnover as understood to have surpassed $1 billion, and noted the firm declined to break revenue down by region. Law360, the same day, reported the firm citing its London office as a growth factor on that global print.

The step into that print is the prior year, and it is not the 2026 Am Law figure. Bloomberg Law, on 11 March 2025, reported FY2024 revenue of $7 billion (up 23 percent), average equity-partner earnings of more than $7.1 million (up 29 percent, firm-confirmed), net income up nearly 32 percent to more than $4 billion, lawyer headcount nearly 4 percent to 3,584, roughly 553 equity and 404 nonequity partners, and an energy practice around $2 billion. The same report restated more than 1,100 public companies advised and more than 400 as primary counsel on governance and securities. Band global lawyers for 2025–2026 in the 3,500–3,800 range: Chambers USA 2026 carries a firm-supplied 3700; the About Us page’s “3,700+” is affinity-group members, not lawyers. New York is listed at 950+ lawyers; London at nearly 500. Do not divide the FY2025 revenue cell by any of those headcounts.

Thomson Reuters Institute and Georgetown Law’s 2026 Report on the State of the US Legal Market (January 2026) surveyed a 184-firm panel — 50 Am Law 100, 58 Second Hundred, 76 midsize. Average 2025 demand grew 2.5 percent (July peak 4.4 percent); one formulation in the same report puts the average firm at 1.9 percent. Worked rates rose 7.3 percent; average firm profits 13.0 percent; talent costs 8.2 percent versus 2024. Practice demand, year on year: M&A +3.3 percent, litigation +2.4 percent, real estate +2.0 percent, corporate (all) +1.5 percent; IP patent litigation −0.8 percent and patent prosecution −1.0 / −1.2 percent. Reuters, on 7 January 2026, restated midsize demand at nearly 5 percent in the second half of 2025 against Am Law 100 demand that could not crack 2 percent, with general counsel moving work under rate pressure. Wells Fargo Legal Specialty Group, via the ABA Journal on 25 August 2026, surveyed more than 140 Am Law 200 firms for the first half of 2026: revenues +12.4 percent, lawyer compensation +8.9 percent (down from +10.5 percent a year earlier), inventories +17.7 percent, collection cycle 5 percent slower. Lockstep cash was still being funded. Collections lag is the counter-pressure on the in-house side of the same tape.

LSEG, on 12 August 2026, put January–July 2026 global announced M&A at US$3.19 trillion (up 36 percent) on a deal count down 10 percent, with 48 mega-deals over US$10 billion totaling US$1.29 trillion. U.S. targets were US$1.69 trillion, the strongest opening seven months on that series. Technology was 23 percent of announced activity. Firm news on 17 June 2026 advertised transatlantic mandates including a US$70 billion metals merger of equals, a US$55 billion take-private in interactive entertainment, a US$40 billion data-center sale, financing on a US$23.7 billion pharmacy take-private, and a €13.7 billion IPO. Those are advertised mandate sizes, not fee take. They are the work a Class of 2023 corporate associate bills, and the work a general counsel is buying when the alternative is to hire that associate inside.

The client types that buy those hours sit on the firm’s own practice pages, accessed 11 September 2026: public companies and boards (more than 1,000 advised; more than 400 as primary governance and securities counsel); private equity sponsors and portfolio companies (more than 500 deals a year; M&A and private equity described in an 11 February 2025 Law360 reprint of a 2024 award as the largest practice group, with more than 600 lawyers globally across 31 offices, roughly half in the United States — a February 2025 print, not a 2026 headcount); private-credit lenders and investment banks; energy and infrastructure sponsors, developers, and government entities; and, from Los Angeles, entertainment, sports, and media companies. Capital Strategies prints 6,660+ debt and equity capital-markets transactions, 1,755+ direct-lending transactions, 2,550+ syndicated loans, and 1,028+ restructuring matters for 2021–2025. That is the firm’s published 2021–2025 window, not a 2026 count, and these are employer counts, not a regulator series. A chief legal officer reading those flags is reading who already pays Latham rates, not a headcount of in-house lawyers.

06 The seats behind the cells

The letter pays first-years. The open laterals are third-to-seventh.

Entry-level applications for fall 2027 stock the next lockstep class. The 2026 experienced-hire pages ask for mid-levels on named desks.

Open Latham laterals in 2026 ask for third-to-seventh year, not first-year lockstep. Latham Careers experienced-hire pages, accessed 11 September 2026, list public titles at an Am Law 2 global firm: Corporate M&A / Private Equity (minimum two years; join third-to-fifth year; Boston, Houston, Los Angeles, Orange County); Finance, borrower-side senior (minimum four years of borrower-side private credit, acquisition, or leveraged finance, with sponsor-side PE acquisition financings required); Project Development & Finance (minimum two years; prefer a large national or international firm; join third-to-fourth year; Houston, New York, San Diego, Washington); Complex Commercial Litigation (third-to-sixth year; Chicago through Washington, including Los Angeles); Antitrust litigation and/or merger control (third-to-seventh year; Austin through Washington); Emerging Companies & Growth (third-to-fifth year; San Francisco and Silicon Valley); Tax — Energy & Infrastructure (minimum three years; tax-equity, partnership tax, power and energy-transition; Washington and New York); and Connectivity, Privacy & Information / Copyright (minimum three years; tech and media counsel plus generative-AI copyright litigation). Several of those California pages apply the City of Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, and Bay Area seats apply the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance — employer-side compliance gates, not wage cells.

Entry-level intake for fall 2027, on the New Associates page accessed the same day, stocks a different class: Litigation & Trial (antitrust in Los Angeles; complex commercial in San Diego; securities and M&A litigation in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego); Finance (general finance, banking, project development and finance, restructuring, private equity finance, structured finance across Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, New York, and Washington); and Corporate (general corporate in Austin and Houston; capital markets in London, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Washington; environment, land and resources; financial institutions; healthcare and life sciences; investment funds; M&A and private equity in Boston; real estate). Candidates may apply to one office and practice. LLM students graduating spring 2027 are eligible on starred New York and London lines. Summer associates are drawn from the Class of 2029 at ABA-accredited law schools; the IP litigation summer program requires a technical undergraduate background. International summers for U.S. students run to Hong Kong, London, and Singapore.

The partnership funnel that sits above the letter ran on a January and March calendar. Firm news on 29 October 2025 named 40 associates elected to the partnership and 56 associates promoted to counsel, effective 1 January 2026, following 19 counsel elected earlier in 2025. Firm news on 20 February 2026 named 22 counsel elected to the partnership, effective 1 March 2026. Combined, those two 2025–26 releases put 62 new partners on the associate and counsel tracks. The prior cycle, referenced on the October 2025 page, was 24 associates to partner and 27 to counsel effective 1 January 2025. Practice labels on the 2026 lists, with no names, include M&A and private equity, banking and private credit, capital markets, emerging companies, data and technology transactions, white collar defense and investigations, transactional tax, securities and M&A litigation, antitrust, investment funds, real estate, executive compensation, complex commercial litigation, connectivity, privacy and information, project development and finance, structured finance, public company representation, and environment, land and resources. Seats named include London, Paris, Milan, Frankfurt, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Orange County, the Bay Area, Houston, Boston, San Diego, Chicago, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Senior-associate rungs on the still-live letter empty into counsel and partner six to nine months before any possible 1 January 2027 catch-up to the June floor.

A general counsel matching Latham cash is matching a class year, not a first-year.

  3. 1 July The new market scale takes effect at the firms that matched. Latham’s published cells do not move.
  4. 30 September The careers letter is unchanged. A general counsel matching a 2026 Latham offer is still matching January.

The 2023 Merger Guidelines remain the review frame. The Department of Justice Antitrust Division page, accessed 11 September 2026, lists the guidelines as jointly released 18 December 2023 and posts an Acting Assistant Attorney General memorandum on their use dated 18 February 2025. Those are the dates on the document, not a 2026 guideline. No later merger-guidelines edition was used on this page. Chambers Merger Control 2026 – USA describes those guidelines as still shaping agency merger review, including lower concentration thresholds and attention to serial acquisitions, labor markets, vertical theories, and potential competition. That is the desk Latham’s third-to-seventh-year antitrust laterals are hired onto. It is not a first-year factory.

Filing burden is a different clock. On 12 February 2026 the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, in Chamber of Commerce of the United States v. FTC, granted summary judgment and vacated the FTC’s amended Hart-Scott-Rodino rules, as reported in a Davis Polk client update dated 13 February 2026. On 19 March 2026 the Fifth Circuit denied the FTC’s stay, as reported by Dechert on 20 March 2026; the Premerger Notification Office began accepting the pre-10 February 2025 form immediately. Junior document production per filing eased from March 2026. Second Request, consent-decree, and merger-litigation work for mid-levels did not. Acting Assistant Attorney General remarks at the NYU Engelberg Center on 7 May 2026 stated that 99.5 percent of HSR mergers submitted to DOJ were not blocked, that only 1 percent go to Second Request, and that the Division is open to structural consent decrees — and willing to litigate if settlement fails. The 0.5 percent that do not sail through is the mid-level seat.

Energy-credit work rewired on a dated statute. IRS newsroom IR-2026-23, 12 February 2026, and Notice 2026-15 cite Public Law 119-21, 139 Stat. 72 (4 July 2025), adding prohibited-foreign-entity and material-assistance restrictions to clean-electricity credits under Internal Revenue Code sections 45Y and 48E and advanced manufacturing section 45X. Material assistance is measured by a material assistance cost ratio against thresholds in section 7701(a)(52), with interim safe harbors until tables publish. Reliance for 45Y/48E facilities whose construction begins after 31 December 2025 runs until 60 days after those tables; section 45X components sold in tax years beginning after 4 July 2025 follow the same logic. The Tax — Energy & Infrastructure laterals in Washington and New York, minimum three years, are the seniority that drafts those covenants now. Project Development & Finance third-to-fourth years in Houston, New York, San Diego, and Washington ride the same statute.

Private credit is mandate-rich and count-softer. Octus U.S. Direct Lending Legal Advisors League Tables for the first half of 2026 put H1 deal count at 1,112 (down 7 percent versus H1 2025) after a Q4 2025 peak of 731, with Q2 2026 at 508 (down 16 percent quarter on quarter and year on year). Latham led with 159 U.S. mandates. Firm news on 10 August 2026 restated 159 U.S. and 33 Europe, with first-place flags in large-cap and M&A financings. The borrower-side private-equity finance senior posting (minimum four years) is a senior seat on a concentrated book, not a first-year intake line. On the technology side, Bloomberg Law on 17 July 2026 described a wave of shareholder derivative suits against public tech companies over training-data practices sitting on top of copyright actions; Latham’s copyright / CPI lateral asks for three or more years on generative-AI cases in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Washington, and New York. The SEC Division of Examinations FY2026 priorities, announced 17 November 2025, put AI representations under accuracy review for the 2026 reporting season — public company and funds seats, not campus lockstep.

Sartori’s Los Angeles associate mandate telemetry records 30 closed searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, with a 33 percent counter-offer incidence and a median of 9 working days from offer to acceptance. 14 of those 30 were company-side seats; 9 of those 14 were priced against a named lockstep letter. 4 of 14 company-side searches were abandoned after the compensation committee refused the lockstep cell. That stall is ours as much as theirs: we took the mandate, ran the shortlist, and still could not place it. In the four quarterly survey waves from the third quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, 41 of 73 Los Angeles in-house respondents on the associate-hiring question — a cut of that same interview cohort — said their approved band sat at least one class year below the lockstep letter they were matching. A head of legal at a Los Angeles entertainment company told us they lost a fifth-year copyright litigator because the internal Senior Attorney band could not see the Class of 2022 cell. A signing bonus does not rewrite a compensation-committee paper.

08 For the company

Underwrite the cell, then title the seat so the band can clear it.

A general counsel matching Latham cash is matching a class year, not a first-year. The in-house stack has to be built to the cell you actually need, or the search will fail on paper rather than on people.

The matching axis a general counsel actually faces. Attorney median total cash and Associate General Counsel median total cash are the ACC / Empsight 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025, not the 2026 edition. Latham cells are the 1 January 2026 letter accessed 30 September 2026. The Milbank first-year marker is Bloomberg Law, 2 June 2026, effective 1 July. Click a marker for the source.

We have worked the Los Angeles associate market for more than 10 years, for companies that need to put a lockstep-scale lawyer on their own payroll and for firms that still pay the letter. Over the last three years we closed 30 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6 to 12 week timeline. The composites below are that desk, anonymized by category. No real company, firm, or lawyer is named.

An industrials platform. A private-equity-backed manufacturer asked for an Associate General Counsel with a sponsor-side M&A diet, priced internally against Senior Attorney cash. The shortlist was fourth- and fifth-year corporate associates on a Latham or peer letter. The compensation committee cleared the Class of 2023 cell ($260,000) and refused the Class of 2022 cell ($310,000). We retitled the seat, moved incentive cash, and closed in 11 weeks on a fourth-year. The fifth-years stayed. Class-year credit, not the headline first-year, was the number that mattered.

An entertainment company. A Los Angeles head of legal needed a copyright litigator who had already seen generative-AI complaints. The internal band topped at Senior Attorney. A fifth-year on a Latham-scale letter declined after the stay counter cleared the printed cell and the in-house paper could not. That file is one of the 4 company-side searches in our Los Angeles associate book that did not fill. The constraint was the committee, not the shortlist.

A public energy issuer. A general counsel needed a project-finance lawyer who could read prohibited-foreign-entity covenants into construction-start papers after 31 December 2025. The company matched the Class of 2023 cell plus a short-term incentive sized off the ACC Associate General Counsel target, and signed in 9 working days — the same median our Los Angeles associate telemetry records — because the band had been built to the letter before anyone was approached. The June market floor never entered the paper. The printed cell did.

If you are the associate reading the letter, the cell you earn is the one on Latham Careers until a new memo exists; bonus is hours-gated and not published for the last cycle. If you are the general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal matching it, title the seat so the band can clear the class year you actually need, and decide in writing whether you are underwriting January or waiting for a match that has not been announced. That conversation is an in-house counsel search, not a campus rumor, and it starts with a private brief. The wider in-house stack, independent of this firm’s letter, sits on our general counsel salary benchmark and the salary hub.

Common questions

Latham pay: both readers, six answers

What is the 2026 Latham & Watkins salary for U.S. associates?

Latham’s own 2026 U.S. class-year letter still prints $225,000 for the Class of 2026 through $435,000 for the Class of 2018. The careers page, accessed 30 September 2026, says the table is updated 1 January of each year and had not moved off that January letter. That is the firm’s published base, not a bonus and not the June 2026 Milbank floor of $235,000–$455,000. A general counsel matching a Latham-scale hire should start from those cells, then decide whether to underwrite the printed letter or the later market floor.

Did Latham match the June 2026 Milbank associate raise?

Not publicly, as of 30 September 2026. Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard, opened 5 June 2026 and accessed 30 September 2026, does not name Latham. The newest rows are Massumi + Consoli (31 August, effective 1 September) and a partial Troutman Pepper Locke match (17 September, effective 1 January 2027: $235,000 at class year 1 and $320,000 at class year 4). The firm’s careers table had not moved. Bloomberg Law reported on 2 June 2026 that Milbank raised bases $10,000 to $20,000 by seniority to $235,000–$455,000; Global Legal Post, 3 June 2026, put the effective date at 1 July 2026. Timing of any Latham catch-up is unannounced.

What is the Latham bonus for 2026?

No public Latham class-year bonus table was located for 2025 performance, and Latham is not a named row on Above the Law’s 2026 special-bonus scorecard as of 30 September 2026. Milbank announced special bonuses on 27 July 2026, transcribed on that scorecard as $6,000 for the Class of 2026 and $25,000 for the Class of 2018 and special counsel, paid 31 August 2026, with no hours gate. Cahill Gordon matched on 24 September 2026, transcribed as $6,000 for the Class of 2025 and $25,000 for the Class of 2018, payable 15 October 2026. The memo images are not re-transcribed here. The last fully dated Latham cycle is still the January 2025 announcement for 2024 performance: 1,900 hours, market base, medians above market, paid 31 January 2025 (Above the Law, 30 January 2025). That cycle is not a 2026 ladder.

What is Latham PEP in the 2026 Am Law 100?

The 2026 Am Law 100, covering FY2025, puts Latham profits per equity partner at $8.654 million, up 21.29 percent. Above the Law published that PEP cell on 15 April 2026, with firmwide revenue at $8.300 billion, up 18.57 percent, second behind Kirkland. PEP is an average over equity partners, not a paycheck. A general counsel reads it as the profit pool that has been funding lockstep cash, not as the number to put on an in-house offer letter.

How should a general counsel match Latham associate salary in-house?

Start from the published class-year cell, not from Attorney median total cash of $160,000. That $160,000, and Associate General Counsel median total cash of $294,000, are the Association of Corporate Counsel / Empsight 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025 — between Latham’s Class of 2023 base ($260,000) and Class of 2022 base ($310,000). They are not a 2026 in-house scale. Lexpert, on 17 September 2026, reported the 2026 ACC / Empsight survey (1,627 U.S. respondents) without reprinting those title medians. Companies hire this talent later: NALP’s Class of 2025 employment report, the latest class in print, put only 6.7 percent of jobs in business, at a $100,000 median. Class of 2026 employment results are not published. Title the seat so the band can clear the cell, or expect the candidate to stay.

What does a Latham London newly qualified solicitor earn in 2026?

The firm’s UK careers page, accessed 30 September 2026, prints trainee pay of £60,000 then £65,000, plus a £20,000 maintenance grant per PGDL or SQE course. It does not print a newly qualified salary, and no Latham document states a 2026 London NQ figure. Trainee sterling and the U.S. class-year letter are different payrolls.

Latham U.S. payroll cells are the careers letter accessed 30 September 2026. No Latham class-year bonus for 2025 performance, and no Latham row on the 2026 special-bonus scorecard, is stated here. The 1,900-hour gate is the January 2025 announcement for 2024 performance. PEP and revenue are FY2025 Am Law 100 averages, not individual pay. Title-level ACC cash is the 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025; the 2026 public write-up does not reprint those medians. The UK careers page does not print a London NQ salary. NALP associate-salary medians are the biennial 2025 survey. Sartori Los Angeles figures are interview-cohort reads and associate-mandate telemetry, reviewed by the owner before publication.

Compensation figures are general information, not financial, career, or legal advice. Actual pay varies by class year, hours, bonus eligibility, and in-house title. Sartori & Partners is a legal search firm. It does not operate Latham & Watkins, set its scale, or administer its bonuses.
