Lawyer Salary in Australia 2026
Jobs and Skills Australia, drawing on the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours for May 2025, puts median full-time solicitor earnings at A$2,070 a week before tax — about US$1,485 at the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 11 September 2026 rate. That is the first number a Sydney general counsel and a candidate both ask. It is not the number either of them should hire or accept at.
The first number is a weekly median. The seat is not.
A Sydney general counsel who asks how much do lawyers earn in Australia is not asking for an occupation average. The candidate asking the same sentence is not asking for one either. Both need a stack: an official median, a practicing-certificate survey, a firm-size cut, and the 2026 cash a company can actually put on an offer letter.
Jobs and Skills Australia, drawing on the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours for May 2025, puts median full-time solicitor earnings at A$2,070 a week before tax for non-managerial adults. Converted at the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 11 September 2026 rate of 0.7172, that is about US$1,485 a week. Cite it. Do not hire at it.
Four instruments, four different populations. The occupation median is employees; the NSW mean is certificate-holders; the firm-size cut is private practice only; the enterprise-agreement point is a public employer. Every series is cited below.

- Legal Services Council Annual Report 2024-2025
Sartori maps roughly 6,500 lawyers in Sydney. The pay figures above are public instruments; the pricing reads in later sections come from that desk’s interview work and from 20 closed associate-line searches over three years. Global coverage sits in a separate research programme of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles and quarterly surveys running since 2019.
How much do lawyers earn in Australia, by the instrument that published the figure
Australia does not publish a Cravath-style associate scale. What it publishes is a stack of instruments that a general counsel and a candidate must not mix.
Start with the occupation median, because it is the figure a board member will Google. Jobs and Skills Australia, using the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours for May 2025, reports median full-time solicitor earnings of A$2,070 a week before tax for non-managerial adults paid at the adult rate. The Reserve Bank of Australia printed 0.7172 US dollars per Australian dollar on 11 September 2026; A$2,070 × 0.7172 is about US$1,485 a week. Show the annualization if you use it: A$2,070 × 52 = A$107,640, about US$77,200 at the same rate. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings release for May 2025 put trend full-time adult ordinary-time earnings at A$2,011.40, so the solicitor median sits near the all-employee figure and is not a large-firm band.
Then move to the practicing-certificate survey, because that is the figure a head of legal in Sydney actually hears in the market. The Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile of Solicitors in NSW (Urbis, July 2026) asked 15,464 respondents for FY2023-24 gross annual pre-tax income and reported a mean of A$184,980. Converted at the 11 September 2026 rate that is about US$132,700 — and the income year is FY2023-24, so the dollars are lagged even if the FX is current. Sector commentary in the same profile puts the corporate mean at A$235,439, private practice at A$194,987, and government at A$152,978. The occupation median is an employee cut. The survey mean includes principals. They are not rivals; they are different populations.
Firm tier, in public Australian sources, is a principal-count distribution. Table 15 of that NSW survey, private practice only (n=8,618), reports that the share earning more than A$250,000 was 35 percent in practices with 50 or more principals versus 9 percent in practices with one to four principals. The share at A$500,000 or more was 15 percent versus 2 percent. That is the public substitute for a lockstep, and it is a distribution, not a class year.

- Occupation median Full-time non-managerial adults in an ABS earnings survey. Useful as a national floor. Silent on firm, sector, and seniority.
- Certificate survey Voluntary income bands from practicing-certificate holders, including principals and in-house seniors. Lagged by a financial year.
- Offer cash plus super What a general counsel can actually book: a cash number the shortlist will sign, plus the statutory Superannuation Guarantee, inside an enterprise agreement or a company band.

USD figures on FY2023-24 NSW means use 2026 FX on a lagged income year. Enterprise-agreement points are base salary as published, exclusive of superannuation unless the agreement says otherwise. The law-graduate award row is an unadmitted floor.
The occupation median is a floor a general counsel cannot hire at.
The same figure, two payrolls: the lawyer who earns it and the company that pays it.
A salary page that names only the candidate is a brochure. A salary page that names only the firm is a different market. This one has to work for both, because the cash is the same number moving from a company ledger onto a lawyer paycheck.
The occupation median is a floor a general counsel cannot hire at. That sentence is the whole pricing problem. Annualize A$2,070 a week and you land on A$107,640; hold that against the NSW corporate mean of A$235,439 for FY2023-24, as the Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile reports it, and the gap is the difference between a statistical employee and a seat a listed company can actually fill. A candidate who treats the weekly median as the market will underprice a move. A chief legal officer who treats it as a budget will watch the first shortlist walk.
Who writes the check is visible in the certificate census before it is visible in any offer. Law Society of NSW solicitor statistics at 30 June 2025 counted 19,334 employees of a law practice, 8,742 corporate legal practitioners, and 4,969 government legal practitioners, on a total of 43,620 NSW practicing certificates. The 2025 Annual Profile’s sector split of private practice 69 percent / corporate 20 percent / government 11 percent is the same market in percentage form. Nationally, the Legal Services Council Annual Report 2024-2025 counted 103,854 solicitors and 6,743 barristers at 30 June 2025. The 2024 National Profile, census date 31 October 2024, had put practicing solicitors at 97,500; those two headcounts are different dates and different cuts.
Jobs and Skills Australia’s employed-solicitor stock is a third cut again: 106,100 for February 2026 on the ABS Labour Force Survey Detailed trend, with annual employment growth of 5,400. An employed solicitor in a labor-force survey is not the same unit as a practicing certificate. For a head of legal building a team, the certificate census is the payroll-relevant stock; the labor-force figure is the occupation backdrop.
AEC Government Lawyer 3.1
Published enterprise-agreement point from 12 March 2026 — a junior public-sector lawyer broadband, not a survey mean.
Australian Electoral Commission Attachment A ↗Your job is to put a lawyer on the payroll at a cash-plus-super number the shortlist will sign, without using the occupation median as a budget.
- Open on the corporate mean. The NSW corporate-sector mean of A$235,439 for FY2023-24 is the public number that matches an in-house seat, not the weekly occupation median.
- Book super as cash cost. Twelve percent of ordinary-time earnings is statutory. From 1 July 2026 it must hit the fund within seven business days of payday.
- Show the weekly-to-annual arithmetic. The ABS series is published weekly; a hiring budget that hides the multiplication is using a different instrument from the one it cites.
- Price the desk, not the title. Most NSW corporate seats are counsel and senior counsel, not a chief legal officer search. The title on the requisition should match the work, not the wish.
Your job is to read which instrument the offer was built from, then decide whether the cash-plus-super mix clears the seat you already hold.
- Ask which instrument they used. An offer built from the occupation median and an offer built from the NSW corporate mean are not the same conversation.
- Convert graduate cash with super attached. A reported A$117,000 Sydney graduate base carries A$14,040 of statutory super at 12 percent — that is the comparison unit, not cash alone.
- Treat Melbourne as the same pricing market. Public sources do not print a city discount; they print a city-versus-regional cut inside NSW, and a Melbourne CBD share of Victorian seats.
- A public EA is a ceiling as well as a floor. Treasury EL 1.1 at A$137,301 from 12 March 2026 is not a starting offer in a listed company, and it is not negotiable inside the agency that published it.
Sydney writes most of the large-firm checks. Melbourne holds a corporate and funds desk. Government publishes its points.
Reference city is Sydney; the market is Australia. Melbourne appears here on Victorian census figures, priced off the same Sydney interview cohort.
Sydney is where the large commercial practices concentrate, and it is where a general counsel instructing on a sizable M&A or investigation will still spend most of the external budget. The 2025 Annual Profile puts 49 percent of NSW solicitors in the Sydney CBD, 33 percent in suburban Sydney, and 11 percent in regional or rural NSW. Fifteen NSW practices with 200 or more solicitors employed 5,159 solicitors — 19 percent of private-practice solicitors — which is the operational definition of a large commercial firm in that census. Location moves the upper tail: 24 percent of full-time solicitors in major cities reported FY2023-24 income above A$250,000, versus 8 percent in regional and remote NSW, in the same profile. The 30 June 2025 solicitor statistics locate 21,274 NSW certificate-holders in the city, 14,587 in suburban Sydney, and 4,897 in rural NSW. The in-house desk inside that city stock is counsel-heavy: of 3,409 corporate survey respondents in the 2025 Annual Profile, 37 percent described themselves as senior lawyer or senior legal counsel, 27 percent as lawyer or legal counsel, 11 percent as general counsel, 10 percent as head of legal team, and 6 percent as Group General Counsel. A company that posts a general counsel role for work a senior legal counsel would do will overpay the title and still miss the person who can run the files.
Junior seats in those large practices are not filled from an open graduate market. Allens, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer and Clayton Utz all describe a vacation-clerkship path into the graduate program, with practical legal training folded into the first year and admission typically mid-year. Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer’s 2026/27 vacation-clerkship page listed 35 to 40 Sydney positions, with applications open 10 June to 12 July 2026. Point Blank, on 2 September 2025, reported Sydney graduate cash at A$117,000 at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, A$116,800 at Gilbert + Tobin, A$115,000 at Allens, and A$112,000 at King & Wood Mallesons and at Ashurst. Those are press-measured firm scales, not regulator tables, and they are the junior cash a first in-house offer is judged against.
| Firm (landscape) | Reported cash (AUD) | Derived USD |
|---|---|---|
| Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, Sydney | A$117,000 | US$83,900 |
| Gilbert + Tobin, Sydney | A$116,800 | US$83,800 |
| Allens, Sydney | A$115,000 | US$82,500 |
| King & Wood Mallesons, Sydney | A$112,000 | US$80,300 |
| Ashurst, Sydney | A$112,000 | US$80,300 |
Melbourne is the second payroll, not a second research programme. The Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner Annual Report 2024–25 counted 30,013 registered lawyers at 30 June 2025, with 16,117 in the Melbourne CBD (53.7 percent), 10,234 in metropolitan Melbourne, and 3,662 in regional Victoria. Entity employment included 8,824 lawyers in incorporated legal practices, 4,490 in corporate bodies, and 4,075 in government. A head of legal at a Melbourne-headquartered industry superannuation trustee described the internal band for investments-legal counsel as sitting nearer the NSW corporate mean than top-tier private-practice cash; the fund’s legal department, profiled by the Association of Corporate Counsel, ran to 63 people with 48 in Australia around a book of approximately A$394.8 billion in assets. That is a company legal department with a published anatomy, not a job advertisement.
Government is the sector that prints its numbers in an enterprise agreement and then stops negotiating. Treasury’s Appendix A rates from 12 March 2026 put EL 1.1 at A$137,301 and EL 2.4 at A$192,469, after a 3.4 percent increase on that date. The Australian Electoral Commission maps a Government Lawyer 3.1 point at A$73,360 from the same date. Australian Government Solicitor titles track APS 3 graduate lawyer through EL1 senior associate to EL2 senior lawyer or counsel. The Whole of Australian Government Legal Services Panel (SON4072331, 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027) lists 50 current suppliers across six areas of law; non-corporate Commonwealth entities may send up to 10 percent of estimated external spend off-panel, and they may use Australian Government Solicitor for any matter at any time. Legal Services Directions 2025 commenced on 2 March 2026 and keep tied public-law work inside AGS and the Attorney-General’s Department. That is why government means sit below corporate means even when an EL2 cash point approaches a mid-tier senior-associate conversation: the buyer is a public employer with a published broadband, not a profit pool.
The 2024 National Profile recorded government-sector solicitor growth of 105 percent over 2014–2024, against corporate 54 percent and private practice 32 percent, with private practice still 64 percent of the October 2024 stock. Fastest-growing is not highest-paid. A company that wants to hire from a government desk is buying statutory fluency and a published cash number; it is not buying a large-firm graduate scale.
A firm writes the checkA company or agency writes it
- Private practice Still the majority of practicing solicitors. Junior cash is a clerkship-to-graduate path at the large commercial firms; the public tier cut is principal count.
- In-house / corporate The highest NSW survey mean. Counsel-heavy, not GC-heavy. The general counsel and the head of legal are the buyers; most seats are senior legal counsel.
- Government The fastest-growing national sector since 2014. Cash is an enterprise-agreement point. Citizenship and clearance gates sit on top of admission.
Super at 12 percent is part of the 2026 package, not an afterthought.
Pay moved because the work moved: workplace hours, merger control, and a 12 percent super clock.
The 2026 Australian pay conversation sits on dated rules that opened mandated work, not on a single boom in billed M&A hours.
Thomson Reuters Institute’s Australian Legal Market Midyear Update, issued 23 February 2026 from the accounting systems of 27 participating firms, recorded market demand +4.8 percent and lawyer headcount +4.8 percent year-to-date December FY2026 versus FY2025. Workplace-relations hours led at +9.9 percent. Insolvency and restructuring ran +7.9 percent. Corporate general ran +7.7 percent. Dispute resolution ran +6.2 percent. M&A hours ran −2.1 percent. Large-segment demand was nearly +7 percent; the Big 8 ran +2.7 percent; midsize ran +2.4 percent. Interviews with 109 Australian legal buyers put net spend anticipation for overall legal work at 0 (28 percent increase, 44 percent the same, 28 percent decrease). A general counsel paying the 2026 figure is not forecasting a broad external-spend boom. The hours that grew are workplace, restructuring, and corporate-general.
That hours mix is the hiring consequence of statutes, not of a deals boom. Intentional wage-theft became a criminal offense on 1 January 2025, the Fair Work Ombudsman confirmed on 2 January 2025. AUSTRAC’s professional designated-services guidance states that AML/CTF obligations apply if a business provides a Table 6 designated service from 1 July 2026; the Law Society of NSW FAQs state that a practice providing those services becomes a reporting entity on 31 March 2026, when enrollment opens. In-house legal services provided to internal persons are generally not a designated service, which is why Tranche 2 is a private-practice compliance seat and not a general counsel hiring wave. The ACCC’s mandatory, suspensory merger-control regime has run since 1 January 2026, with a large-merged-firm test of combined Australian revenue of at least A$200 million and either target Australian revenue of at least A$50 million or global transaction value of at least A$250 million. FIRB’s 2026 monetary screening thresholds took effect the same day; Guidance Note 7 (January 2026) puts most business investments currently screened above A$347 million, with FTA-partner private investors at A$1,498 million except for sensitive businesses, and national-security businesses at A$0.
ION Analytics / Mergermarket, on 15 January 2026, put Australia 2025 M&A at US$93.5 billion across 1,135 deals, the highest since 2021. Point Blank, on 20 July 2026, put Australasia 1H26 at A$101.6 billion across 475 deals against 622 deals a year earlier — higher value, fewer mandates. Announced-deal value and billed M&A hours are different series: value hit a four-year high while hours contracted. ASIC media release 25-231MR, covering 2024–25, recorded formal investigations at 252 against 168 the year before, and court-ordered civil penalties of A$104.1 million. AASB S2 climate-related disclosures pull Group 2 reporters in for annual periods beginning on or after 1 July 2026. APRA CPS 230 has applied since 1 July 2025, with pre-existing material service-provider contracts required to meet the standard from the earlier of next renewal or 1 July 2026. The Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024 received Royal Assent on 10 December 2024; the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner records that the majority of amendments in its remit commenced on 11 December 2024, with automated-decision-making machinery in Schedule 1 Part 15 commencing on 10 December 2026. New South Wales Supreme Court Practice Note SC Gen 23 has constrained generative AI in affidavits and submissions since 3 February 2025; Thomson Reuters’ midyear note on junior-hour compression is the Institute’s hypothesis, not a published headcount cut, and the same report still shows lawyer headcount +4.8 percent.
Two platforms now compete for Australian talent from a Sydney hub. Reuters, on 2 June 2025, reported that the Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin combination took effect on 1 June 2025. Ashurst Perkins Coie, in a 28 June 2026 announcement, completed its combination that day and named Sydney as a flagship hub alongside Seattle, London and New York. That is a buyer-structure shift, not an Australian headcount series, and it is why a general counsel instructing on energy, infrastructure, technology or financial services now faces two global platforms pricing the same Sydney associate.
Cash is the line. Super, supervision, and the award trap sit under it.
Comparing a 2026 Australian offer on base alone is the mistake both readers make. Super is statutory. Admission is a gate. The award is not a solicitor scale.
Super at 12 percent is part of the 2026 package, not an afterthought. The Australian Taxation Office Super guarantee page, last updated 17 April 2026, sets the general Superannuation Guarantee rate at 12.00 percent for 1 July 2025–30 June 2026 and for 1 July 2026–30 June 2027. Payday Super applies from 1 July 2026: the ATO page updated 10 August 2026 requires contributions to be received by the employee’s fund within seven business days after payday. On the press-reported Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Sydney graduate cash of A$117,000, 12 percent is A$14,040 unless the role sits over the maximum contribution base. A chief legal officer who quotes cash and forgets super is quoting a number no payroll will book. A candidate who compares cash to cash across a firm offer and an in-house offer, without the SG line, is comparing two different units.
The Legal Services Award is the trap that still walks into briefs. The Fair Work Ombudsman Pay Guide for MA000116, published 24 June 2026, sets the law-graduate level 5 minimum at A$1,291.80 a week (A$33.99 an hour) from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026, after the Annual Wage Review 2026 decision on 2 June 2026 lifted modern award minimum rates by 4.75 percent. The award text, consolidated to 23 January 2026, defines a law graduate as an employee who has completed a law qualification and is training toward admission, and it expressly excludes a lawyer already admitted in Australia or a foreign jurisdiction. Admitted solicitors are award-free. Using the graduate floor as a proxy for solicitor salary is not conservative. It is the wrong instrument.
Admission itself is a pay gate because unsupervised practice is not a first-year option. The Law Society of NSW supervised-legal-practice page, applying Uniform Law s 49, puts condition 2 on the first solicitor practicing certificate until the holder completes 24 months full-time (practical-legal-training pathway) or 18 months (articles or an approved training plan). A barrister cannot supervise a solicitor for that purpose. Corporate and government lawyers can count supervised practice under a person eligible to supervise. A company hiring a newly admitted lawyer is hiring a supervised seat whether the offer letter says so or not, and that is a staffing fact as well as a regulatory one.
Jobs and Skills Australia, using the ABS Labour Force Survey four-quarter average for 2025, reports that 89 percent of solicitors work full-time hours, with average full-time hours of 46 a week from the 2021 Census. That hours load is the other half of the cash line a candidate compares, and it is why an in-house offer at the NSW corporate mean can still win a large-firm associate who is not being paid for the 46th hour. Foreign-qualified seniors are a supply valve, not a demand creator: the Law Council of Australia (updated 2 December 2025) allows fly-in, fly-out foreign law for up to 90 days in 12 months without registration; longer presence requires registration as an Australian-registered foreign lawyer, which authorizes foreign law only. The Legal Services Council guideline on exemptions for overseas qualifications, dated 15 May 2025 and in force from 1 July 2025, splits applicants with at least seven years of foreign practice from those with less. It widens lateral supply into Uniform Law jurisdictions. It does not print a salary.
What 20 closed Sydney searches and one interview cohort actually did to the number.
Sartori has worked the Sydney associate and in-house market for five years. The public instruments above tell you what was published. The closed files tell you what a shortlist would sign.
Across 250 structured interviews with Sydney lawyers, 96 of the respondents sitting as in-house hiring managers, general counsel or heads of legal over a 24-month window were asked how they priced a senior legal counsel seat. Seventy-one of those 96 said they would not open the seat at a cash figure inside the annualized occupation median. A general counsel at an ASX-listed industrials group put it more bluntly: the team budgets senior legal counsel against the NSW corporate-sector mean and then adds the statutory 12 percent Superannuation Guarantee, not against a weekly ABS cut.
In the same cohort, 81 respondents were private-practice associates interviewed over an 18-month window. Fifty-four of those 81 named Sydney CBD large-firm graduate cash as the reference they used to judge a first in-house offer. That is why the September 2025 press figures matter to a company even when the hire is a fourth-year counsel seat: the candidate’s reference point was set on a graduate scale the company never published.
Sartori’s Sydney mandate telemetry records 20 closed associate-line searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate, with a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Counter-offer incidence on that book is 34 percent. Of those 20 closed files, 11 were in-house counsel seats, six were private-practice associate seats, and three were government or agency lawyer seats. Four of the 11 in-house files ran past the typical 12-week window because the first cash number sat on the annualized occupation median rather than on the NSW corporate mean. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: when the buyer anchors on the Googleable weekly figure, the search stalls, and we still have to finish it.
Three composites, described by category only. An ASX-listed energy retailer in Sydney needed a senior legal counsel with a workplace overlay after the 1 January 2025 wage-theft offense; the first cash number was rewritten once the shortlist compared it with the NSW corporate mean, and the file closed in nine weeks. A national mid-tier firm in Melbourne needed a mid-level disputes associate as workplace and restructuring hours rose; Melbourne was priced off the same Sydney interview cohort, and the file closed in eight weeks. A non-corporate Commonwealth entity needed an EL1-equivalent senior associate on the published Treasury point; there was no cash negotiation, and the offer was accepted in 12 working days. No lawyer, firm or candidate is named, because none of those files is a press release.
The service view of a company seat sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page. The structural trade between a firm paycheck and a company paycheck is the private-practice versus in-house salary guide. A US legal department trying to overlay American in-house bands onto this stack should start from the 2026 in-house counsel salary benchmark and then convert with the Reserve Bank rate, not with a remembered graduate figure.
Lawyer salary in Australia: questions from both sides of the offer
In 2026, how much do lawyers earn in Australia?
Jobs and Skills Australia’s May 2025 solicitor median is A$2,070 a week before tax, about US$1,485 at the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 11 September 2026 rate. That is an occupation median for full-time non-managerial employees, not a firm-tier band. The Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile puts FY2023-24 mean gross income at A$184,980 across practicing-certificate survey respondents, with a corporate-sector mean of A$235,439. Top-tier Sydney graduate cash was reported at A$117,000 at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer in September 2025. A 2026 package then adds a 12 percent Superannuation Guarantee.
What is a competitive lawyer salary in Sydney versus Melbourne?
Public sources do not print a Melbourne discount to Sydney. In NSW, 24 percent of full-time solicitors in major cities reported FY2023-24 income above A$250,000, against 8 percent in regional and remote NSW, according to the Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile. Victoria counted 30,013 registered lawyers at 30 June 2025, with 16,117 in the Melbourne CBD, in the Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner Annual Report 2024–25. Sartori prices Melbourne seats off the same Sydney interview cohort; the public cut that moves pay is firm size and sector, not the state line.
Do Australian law firms pay a Cravath-style lockstep in 2026?
No. None of the primary publishers print a year-by-year national lockstep for Australian firms. The closest public “tier” cut is the Law Society of NSW principal-count table: 35 percent of solicitors in practices with 50 or more principals reported FY2023-24 income above A$250,000, versus 9 percent in practices with one to four principals. Top-tier junior cash is visible as press-reported graduate scales, not as an eight-rung ladder.
How should a general counsel budget an in-house counsel seat in Australia in 2026?
Budget against the NSW corporate-sector mean of A$235,439 for FY2023-24, plus 12 percent Superannuation Guarantee, not against the occupation weekly median. Across 96 in-house hiring managers inside Sartori’s Sydney interview cohort, over 24 months, 71 said they would not open a senior legal counsel seat at the annualized occupation median. From 1 July 2026 the contribution must be received by the fund within seven business days of payday.
What does the Legal Services Award tell a company about solicitor pay?
The Legal Services Award law-graduate minimum is A$1,291.80 a week from 1 July 2026, and it does not cover admitted solicitors. The Fair Work Ombudsman consolidation of MA000116 defines a law graduate as an employee training toward admission and expressly excludes a lawyer already admitted in Australia or a foreign jurisdiction. Admitted solicitors are award-free; using the graduate floor as a hiring budget is a category error.
How much super sits on top of a 2026 Australian legal salary?
The Superannuation Guarantee is 12.00 percent for 1 July 2025–30 June 2026 and for 1 July 2026–30 June 2027, per the Australian Taxation Office. On a reported Sydney graduate cash salary of A$117,000 that is A$14,040 of statutory super, unless the role sits over the maximum contribution base. Payday Super, from 1 July 2026, requires the contribution to be received by the employee’s fund within seven business days after payday.
Occupation surveys, practicing-certificate income, enterprise agreements, and the 2026 statutes
Pay figures come from ABS and Jobs and Skills Australia, from the Law Society of NSW income survey, from published enterprise agreements and award guides, and from legal-press reporting of graduate cash. Demand figures come from Thomson Reuters Financial Insights and from regulator instruments.

The occupation median is an ABS employee cut (full-time non-managerial adults). The NSW means are a voluntary practicing-certificate survey of FY2023-24 gross income, converted here at 11 September 2026 FX with the lag flagged. Enterprise-agreement points are agency-specific base salaries from 12 March 2026. Graduate cash is legal-press reporting dated 2 September 2025, not a firm PDF. Thomson Reuters hours and headcount come from 27 participating firms, not the whole market. The October 2024 national solicitor count and the June 2025 solicitor count are different censuses. Recruiter salary guides and legal job boards are not used.
Our own numbers — the Sydney interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research programme described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.

We map in-house and associate talent across Sydney and Melbourne, and we would rather tell a general counsel the first cash number will not clear than run a search that stalls at week twelve. Confidential, no obligation.
