Lawyer Salary Georgia 2026: Not the Lockstep, Not One Atlanta Cell

Georgia employed lawyers posted a $134,830 median in May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wages. That dated figure is not the national lockstep, and it is not a single Atlanta BigLaw cell.

The dated number is not the lockstep, and it is not Midtown.

Georgia employed lawyers posted a median of $134,830 in the Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 wage estimates, published through O*NET. That dated number is the 2026 lawyer salary Georgia companies misread when they copy the national lockstep or a single Atlanta BigLaw cell.

Sartori maps about 12,000 lawyers in Atlanta. That is a coverage file, not a wage survey, and it is how this desk reads a city rather than a convenience sample. Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles sit in the global map behind it; quarterly surveys have run since 2019. The question on this page belongs to two readers at once: the general counsel or chief legal officer who has to put a lawyer on a Georgia payroll, and the lawyer who will earn the 2026 figure. The opening fact is the same for both. Georgia is not one Atlanta BigLaw cell.

Four published 2026-relevant layers for Georgia lawyer pay. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures are May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for SOC 23-1011, via O*NET. The matching-firm first-year base is the Milbank lockstep effective 1 July 2026 as compiled by Biglaw Investor. The Above the Law scorecard does not list Atlanta-founded Am Law firms among the matches. These four rows are different objects. They are not a single “Georgia salary.”

Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell median $138,210 May 2025 Employed lawyers in the Atlanta MSA, same survey — $3,380 above the state, not a different market

National matching-firm first-year base $235,000 1 July 2026 Milbank lockstep as compiled by Biglaw Investor; the match table does not list Atlanta-founded Am Law firms

Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell’s May 2025 median of $138,210 sits only $3,380 above the statewide median. It is still $21,460 below the national lawyer median of $159,670 that the Occupational Outlook Handbook, using the same May 2025 OEWS program, printed for the United States. A head of legal who treats “Atlanta” as a lockstep island and “Georgia” as a discount on that island is reading two cells that the occupation file does not support. The Atlanta 75th percentile of $216,240 is the first published rung that overlaps last year’s large-firm mode. The July 2026 first-year print of $235,000 sits above even that quartile.

Retained search for the Atlanta company chair, and for Atlanta firm seats, is on legal recruiters in Atlanta.

Lens 01 · The thin Atlanta cell Atlanta was not the $225,000 standard even before the raise.

NALP’s 2025 Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025, found 33.3 percent of nine Atlanta offices at the then-$225,000 first-year figure. Houston was 66.7 percent of twelve offices on the same table. Nine offices is enough to publish and too thin to treat as the Atlanta rate. A city median from nine offices is not a state rate.

Four lenses on one misread: the 2026 figure is not the lockstep, not a nine-office Atlanta cell, not a first-job median, and not a license you can carry in from New York. Every public figure is cited below.

Why lawyer salary Georgia sits on four published layers.

Before a general counsel sets a 2026 number, the file has to say which published layer the number is answering. Mixing them is how an Atlanta offer reads as market to the board and below-market to the candidate — or the reverse, outside the Perimeter.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, using May 2025 wages, put the national lawyer median at $159,670. Georgia sat about 16 percent under that on the O*NET state table: 10th percentile $58,750; 25th $84,460; median $134,830; 75th $202,800; 90th $317,820. Those percentiles describe employed lawyers across firm, in-house and government. They will never equal a first-year lockstep, and they will never equal a first-job graduate median. A head of legal who averages them is inventing a fifth layer.

Georgia employed-lawyer wage tails, May 2025, SOC 23-1011. The statewide median and the Atlanta 75th live on the opening table; this line is the rest of the distribution a general counsel actually hires across — legal-aid and small-firm work at the left, the occupation 90th at the right. The national median is the marker that shows Georgia sitting under, not over, the country.

Rome’s May 2025 lawyer median was $74,410 on the same BLS table. Copying the July 2026 lockstep onto that metro is not a retention strategy. It is a category error. Source: O*NET, BLS 2025 wage data.

Industry medians on the Occupational Outlook Handbook page are national, not Georgia: federal government $178,380; legal services $157,870; local government $131,390; state government $115,330, all May 2025. They explain why a public desk and a firm desk do not share a scale. They do not let a head of legal in Macon invent a Georgia-only government median from a national row. BLS projects U.S. lawyer employment to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 863,700 to 904,300, with about 28,700 openings a year. That is a national outlook. It is not a Georgia requisition.

Georgia is not one Atlanta BigLaw cell.

03 The buyers

Three payers, three scales, one license file.

The 2026 figure is paid by three buyer classes that do not share a scale: Atlanta-founded and national Am Law offices, in-house legal departments at Fortune-scale headquarters, and public desks. A general counsel who budgets as if every Georgia lawyer sits in an Atlanta lockstep cell will overpay the median seat.

Appropriated public scaleNational firm print

  1. Public desks Attorney General sections, Northern District AUSAs, circuit defenders, Tax Court and Business Court chambers, legal aid. Appropriated bands. Georgia bar.
  2. In-house at Georgia HQs General counsel, deputy GC, AGC, corporate counsel. Company band, too often copied from an Atlanta firm cell. Fitness plus exam or motion.
  3. Atlanta Am Law and national offices Associate and counsel on M&A, finance, litigation, labor, IP, data security. A national or office scale that NALP showed was not uniform in Atlanta.

Select Georgia, citing Fortune magazine 2026, puts Atlanta as the number-three U.S. city for Fortune 500 headquarters, with 14 of them contributing $548 billion of combined revenue, 29 Fortune 1000 headquarters, more than 1,200 regional and global HQ locations, and 484,000 HQ jobs. The named mix on those pages includes Home Depot, UPS, Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola, Southern Company, Genuine Parts, Intercontinental Exchange and Norfolk Southern in Atlanta, Asbury Automotive and AGCO in Duluth, Aflac in Columbus, and Mohawk Industries in Calhoun. Southern Company’s own page states Atlanta is home. ICE’s about page describes an Atlanta-founded exchange and data company. Those legal departments — a Fortune 25 specialty retailer, a Fortune 100 airline, a Fortune 150 utility holding company, a Fortune 400 exchange operator — are who pays in-house cash in this state. They are not a Savannah or Macon corporate department, except where a named HQ sits outside the city.

The firm-side cell is real and it is not the state. King & Spalding was established in Atlanta in 1885. Alston & Bird’s Atlanta office page states over 350 lawyers at One Atlantic Center in Midtown. The Daily Report, reprinting ALM on 15 April 2026, put King & Spalding at $2.679 billion of 2025 revenue (No. 23 on the 2026 Am Law 100, down from No. 21 despite a 13 percent increase) and Alston at $1.443 billion (No. 44, up 8.4 percent), with Alston attributing 2025 demand to M&A, finance, litigation and data security. Ogletree Deakins, Atlanta-rooted labor and employment, was No. 77 at $823.57 million. Kilpatrick Townsend was No. 95 at $630.1 million. Those are firm-wide dollars, not Atlanta-office profits per equity partner, and they are context for why a matching-firm print can be funded in Midtown. They are not a Georgia occupation wage. Emory Law’s 2026 employment report states around 30 Am Law 200 firms have Atlanta offices. Troutman Pepper Locke, Jones Day and Ogletree staff finance, M&A, labor, IP, white collar and cybersecurity from Peachtree addresses. That is the lockstep-adjacent cell. It is not Savannah.

Three buyer classes that pay the 2026 Georgia figure. Employer types from Select Georgia, firm office pages, the Georgia Department of Law, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, and the Fulton public-defender desk. No salary on this table: the occupation medians live above; the lockstep lives on the national scale page.

Emory Law Class of 2024 NALP salary medians by employer type, 215 of 266 employed graduates reporting, as published in Emory's 2026 employment report. This is one Atlanta law school's 10-month outcomes, not the employed stock and not a Fortune 25 general counsel paycheck. The 501-plus cell is 49 percent of Emory's private-practice jobs, not of Georgia lawyers.

Emory Law Employment Report; ABA Employment Summary for 2024 graduates, status as of 17 March 2025.

Emory’s ABA summary for the Class of 2024, as of 17 March 2025, recorded 288 graduates, 255 in full-time long-term bar-admission-required jobs, 266 employed, 123 in Georgia and 43 in New York. UGA Law’s Class of 2024, as of the same date, recorded 189 graduates, 177 employed, 134 in Georgia, 33 in firms of 501 or more, 21 in government, 7 in business and industry. The Class of 2025, as of 16 March 2026, still placed 33 in 501-plus firms and 126 in Georgia. Compared with Emory, UGA sends a larger share of its class into Georgia and into government, clerkships and firms under 100 lawyers — the part of the wage distribution that is not the Atlanta BigLaw cell. A chief legal officer who reads campus 501-plus medians as the in-house market will understate mid-career demand at those 14 Fortune 500 headquarters. Emory’s business-and-industry n is 9 salaries around a $97,000 median. That is too small to price a Fortune 25 general counsel seat, and this page does not.

The public buyer is a named set of desks, not a vibe. The Georgia Department of Law represents agencies and cannot advise private citizens; its sections include Regulated Public Interests (the Public Service Commission among the clients), Commercial Transactions, Environmental and Natural Resources, Medicaid Fraud (a federal fiscal-2025 grant of $5,180,400 plus $1,726,800 state), and the Solicitor General’s unit. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, updated 30 September 2025, serves 7.5 million people from the north Georgia mountains to Atlanta suburbs, with an Atlanta main office and unstaffed offices in Rome, Gainesville and Newnan; its Civil Division, updated 17 March 2026, names the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a defensive client. The Atlanta Judicial Circuit public defender, established 1967, has well over 200 staff across eight divisions. Georgia Legal Services Program covers rural civil poverty law; Atlanta Legal Aid Society covers five metro counties. Those seats sit in the OEWS 10th-to-25th percentile. They are not failed lockstep searches. They are a different payer.

04 The collision

Lawyer salary Atlanta is not the 2026 lockstep.

NALP measured Atlanta as a one-third city on last year's floor, on nine offices. The July 2026 print is a national object. Treating them as the same number is how an in-house band misses, and how a candidate misreads a Midtown offer.

Occupation medianNational print

  1. Georgia OEWS median The dated occupation wage for employed lawyers. Firm, in-house, government. Not a class year. Not a bonus.
  2. Atlanta participating-office first-year Nine offices as of 1 January 2025. A third at last year’s large-firm mode. Enough to publish. Too thin to be the city.
  3. July 2026 matching-firm floor A national lockstep. The match table does not list Atlanta-founded Am Law firms. Do not invent the match.

Only 33.3 percent of nine Atlanta offices reported a $225,000 first-year base as of 1 January 2025. NALP’s June 2025 Bulletin+, reporting the 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, put the overall first-year median at $200,000 (about 87 percent of respondents from offices in firms of more than 250 lawyers). Firms of 250 or fewer sat at $150,000. Firms of more than 700 sat at $215,000. The South and West regional median was $205,000. $225,000 was the most frequently reported first-year figure — 32 percent of offices, 44.7 percent of 701-plus firms — and was not the median even in the largest firms. Atlanta accounted for 2.6 percent of all reported $225,000 first-year salaries. Contrast Houston at 66.7 percent of 12 offices, New York City at 56.5 percent of 23, San Francisco at 72.7 percent of 11. Atlanta is on the table. It is not Houston.

The same participant summary printed all-sizes median bases as of 1 January 2025: 1st $200,000; 2nd $210,000; 3rd $220,625; 4th $238,125; 5th $255,000; 6th $271,175; 7th $286,700; 8th $330,000. In 701-plus firms the first-year median was already $215,000 against a $225,000 ceiling in the range table. Eighth-year all-sizes range ran $75,000 to $435,000. Those are national class-year bases, not an Atlanta grid. The anatomy of the July 2026 ladder — $235,000 for a first-year through $455,000 for an eighth-year, with year-end bonuses $20,000 to $115,000 — lives on our 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale. Milbank announced the raise on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026, as Above the Law reported that day. The scorecard, read with tables updated through late summer, recorded matches including McDermott, Quinn Emanuel, Katten, Sullivan & Cromwell and Norton Rose Fulbright. It does not list King & Spalding, Alston & Bird, or other Atlanta-founded Am Law firms. This page will not infer a Georgia-office match from a national table that does not name them. That gap is a fact about the evidence, not a slight.

Sartori’s Atlanta interview cohort (300 structured interviews) shows the in-house side of that misread. Of 118 in-house counsel, general counsel and heads of legal inside that cohort, 92 sitting at Fortune-scale or mid-market Georgia legal departments over a 24-month window said their last associate or counsel offer was priced against an Atlanta Am Law cell rather than the BLS metro they were actually hiring in. A general counsel at a Fortune 150 utility holding company headquartered in Atlanta told us, in that same slice, that an energy-regulatory counsel band written to the then-$225,000 first-year floor had to be recut when the shortlist was mid-level firm lawyers already above it. A chief legal officer at a Fortune 100 airline headquarters said they budget Atlanta counsel against the Atlanta-founded Am Law offices and were surprised the statewide median sat $21,460 below the national lawyer median.

The mandate file agrees, and it is a smaller object. Of 26 closed Atlanta associate searches over three years, 14 were company mandates — in-house seats at Georgia headquarters or operating companies — and 12 were firm-side. Of those 14 company files, 6 required a mid-search rewrite of the pay band after the first shortlist treated an Atlanta lockstep cell as the comparable. Our Atlanta associate mandate telemetry records a 39 percent counter-offer incidence across the 26 closed searches. Inside the 14 company files, 5 drew a counter from the sitting employer. Median offer-to-acceptance on the line is 12 working days — short enough that a Midtown print still in the market can reopen a conversation the company thought it had closed. The uncomfortable number is the six rewrites: the desk is hired to price the seat, and on those files the first band was wrong.

The mean is what a general counsel paying scale-adjacent Atlanta counsel actually sees.
On the mean
05 The drivers

The dockets and the capital cycle that price the upper tail.

The 2026 Georgia figure is being rewritten by dated instruments, not by the national lockstep: a PSC generation package for data-center load, two new statewide courts, a civil docket that jumped in the Northern District, and a federal hiring freeze that narrowed the junior public channel.

Certified nowRate case later

  1. Energy and land-use mid-levels PSC-certified generation, special-use hearings, incentive unwind. Atlanta firms and Southern Company / Georgia Power in-house, now through the exemption sunset.
  2. Tax Court and Business Court specialists Judicial-branch Tax Court filings, internal-entity claims channeled into the State-wide Business Court, charter and bylaw work at Georgia HQs.
  3. Junior federal seats, later The docket rose. The Honors channel narrowed. Clerkships and state DA and PD desks were not frozen. The 2026 junior public hire is not the 2024 hire.

The Georgia Public Service Commission voted 5-0 on 19 December 2025 to certify 9,885 megawatts of new generation, most of it for large customers such as data centers, on a stipulated agreement Georgia Power had filed on 30 July 2025. The Commission’s own release states it does not approve data-center siting, and it cites $8.50 a month of downward pressure for a 1,000 kWh household as the backstop in the stipulation. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the same day, reported the vote clears Georgia Power to invest at least $16 billion in new resources — gas units at Plants Bowen, Wansley and McIntosh — adding 9,885 MW in five years, more than double Plant Vogtle’s four reactors, with sworn resource-planning testimony of signed data-center contracts representing 7,900 MW. A Southern Environmental Law Center petition filed in Fulton County Superior Court on 25 March 2026 (Civil Action 26CV004316) seeks review of Dockets 56298 and 56310, recites orders of 30 December 2025 and 23 February 2026, pleads over $16 billion in capital expenditures and $50 to $60 billion of customer payments over resource life, and asks the court to decertify at least 757 MW. Those pleaded dollars are a filing, not a finding. Hiring consequence: energy-regulatory, environmental and utility-finance mid-levels and counsel at Atlanta firms and at the utility holding company, now through 2031, plus appellate and administrative-law seats on the Fulton review in 2026.

The same AJC report stated the December vote was likely the last for two Republican incumbents defeated in November 2025, with Democratic challengers seated 1 January 2026 as the first Democrats in years on the five-member body, and two PSC seats again on the 2026 ballot. The 2026 General Assembly, as Georgia Watch reported on 4 April 2026, left the 2018 data-center sales-and-use tax exemption in place through 2031; a state report estimated Georgia would miss $2.5 billion in tax revenue in 2026 because of the perks. Atlanta City Council, on 2 June 2025, unanimously required a special-use permit for new data-center proposals and barred them from named commercial districts; Douglas and Coweta counties had adopted moratoriums. Microsoft’s Fairwater facility in Fayetteville began operations in October 2025 on a 615-acre QTS campus purchased in August 2022 for $154 million, the AJC reported on 21 November 2025 from open-records documents. On 6 August 2026 the same paper reported Microsoft working with Fulton and Douglas counties to unwind local tax incentive agreements, while Union City remains under construction. That is land-use, incentives and now unwind work for in-house real-estate counsel and for firm land-use mid-levels. It is not a first-year lockstep seat.

HB 392 (Act 263) moved the judicial-branch Tax Court to 1 July 2026 so there is no gap when the executive-branch Tax Tribunal ceases; the chief judge’s tenure began 1 April 2026; pending tribunal cases as of 30 June 2026 transfer automatically; a judge must have practiced primarily in tax law for at least eight years. The Georgia Courts Journal, on 28 July 2026, described launch staff of two full-time people and one half-time staff attorney. HB 1185, signed 11 May 2026 and effective 1 July 2026, channels internal-entity claims into the State-wide Business Court and lets articles and bylaws require those claims exclusively there. In-house corporate counsel at Georgia headquarters had a 2026 window to revise charters and bylaws before that date. The Supreme Court of Georgia, in North American Senior Benefits, LLC v. Wimmer, decided 4 September 2024, held that the Georgia Restrictive Covenants Act does not require an express geographic term for a covenant to be geographically reasonable. Labor-and-employment and Business Court commercial seats, and in-house employment counsel rewriting forms, follow from that holding. None of those instruments is a salary survey. All of them decide which 2026 seats actually open.

For the 12 months ending 30 September 2025, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts recorded 8,356 civil cases commenced in the Northern District of Georgia, up 20.3 percent from 6,944; the Middle District was up 29.3 percent and the Southern District up 16.6 percent. Table X-1A put the Northern District at 11 authorized judgeships and 823 weighted filings per judgeship, against a national weighted average of 590 in the table header. That is a demand series for Atlanta-seated litigators and government lawyers, not a paycheck. Combined with the January 2025 federal hiring freeze, it is a docket that rose while the junior federal channel narrowed. NALP’s Class of 2025 selected findings, as of 16 March 2026 and released 5 August 2026, recorded federal government jobs excluding clerkships down 37.0 percent nationally, from nearly 1,100 to about 690, and Honors Program jobs from 317 to 50. Reuters, on 27 January 2025, reported Honors offers revoked and volunteer summer internships canceled; judicial clerkships were not covered. This page will not invent a Georgia-only freeze headcount. The Atlanta consequence is directional: junior AUSA, Honors, EPA Region 4, CDC and IRS Counsel seats were the 2025 casualty; clerkships and state DA and PD desks were not frozen.

06 Running the search

What the general counsel should print, and what the lawyer should hear.

The Atlanta associate desk has worked this market for eight years, for companies and firms in energy, aviation, retail, logistics and commercial work. Over the trailing three years the typical timeline on the line is 6 to 12 weeks. The files that blew past it are the ones this section is for.

Of the same 26 closed Atlanta associate files, 4 public-adjacent and statewide-court mandates ran past the 6 to 12 week band. Those were Georgia-license seats — Attorney General sections, Tax Court and Business Court chambers support, rural-circuit adjacent work — and the desk does not close them at matching-firm lockstep. We now say so in the first client call rather than after week ten. Completion on the line is 93 percent. The slow files still closed. They closed late, which is the finding that keeps the rest of the telemetry honest.

Two anonymized composites from that book, described by category only. First: a Fortune-scale utility holding company headquartered in Atlanta needed a mid-level energy-regulatory counsel to sit on large-load contracts and the Fulton review of the generation docket. The first band was written to last year’s large-firm first-year floor. Mid-level firm lawyers already above that floor declined. The company rewrote the band mid-search, inside the 6-of-14 revision count above, and closed inside the 6 to 12 week window once the number described the seniority on the shortlist. Second: a Savannah-area manufacturer hiring its first general counsel tried an Atlanta Am Law cell as the comparable. The shortlist that would move was priced off the Savannah and Augusta occupation medians, not off Midtown. The file closed in eight weeks after the company stopped treating the state as one Atlanta paycheck. A third composite, because the lawyer who earns the figure needs it: an Atlanta-headquartered specialty retailer posted a commercial associate general counsel against a Midtown firm cell. The sitting employer countered. This file was one of the five company-side counters. The candidate signed in the second week after offer — inside the 12-day median window — once the company printed against the Atlanta firm conversation rather than against the statewide median.

Your exposure is a published layer, not a blended Georgia salary. The files that moved after week six were the ones that chased an Atlanta lockstep cell into a metro that does not pay it, or that under-specified a Midtown competitor the candidate can walk to.

  • Name the layer on the requisition. Occupation median, participating-office first-year, company band, or matching-firm print. Mixing them is how the board and the candidate read different jobs.
  • Use the Atlanta table for Atlanta. The January 2025 NALP city table was a one-third read on nine offices. Copying Houston’s two-thirds onto Peachtree is how a posting misses.
  • Do not invent a match. If the scorecard does not list the Atlanta-founded platform, do not budget as if it had already printed $235,000.
  • Budget the counter. Utility, airline and retail employers defend, because replacement costs a search and a docket gap, not a week of coverage.
  • Price Savannah as Savannah. A first general counsel south of the Perimeter is not a failed Midtown associate search. It is a different product on the same license file.

Your comparable is the office and the metro actually paying this month, not a national scale page the Atlanta-founded platforms have not been shown to match, and not a statewide median that mixes legal aid with Midtown.

  • Read starting pay as starting pay. A Class of 2024 law-firm median is not a fifth-year occupation wage. NALP’s January 2026 index is a first-job file.
  • Price take-home against the statute. HB 463, signed 11 May 2026, set the individual rate at 4.99 percent for tax years beginning 1 January 2026. NALP’s Atlanta buying-power index of 1.788 versus New York does not fold that rate.
  • Ask which license the seat needs. Georgia is not the UBE. Motion is 5 of 7. Fitness is 8 to 12 weeks. Ask in the first call, not the fourth.
  • Watch the public channel. Honors and junior federal seats narrowed in 2025. Clerkships and state DA and PD desks did not. Those are different 2026 products.
  • Test the market without a name on it. Our lateral-move decision guide covers how to do that; this page will not circulate a sitting seat.

The service view of the Atlanta book sits on our Atlanta in-house counsel recruiting page and on Atlanta associate recruiting. Companies building a legal function from nothing rather than adding a seat should start with the first general counsel guide before anything on this page. National in-house cash bands, which this article does not reprint, live on the 2026 in-house counsel salary benchmark.

07 The rest of the file

What a Georgia lawyer salary headline leaves out.

The lockstep is the number a Midtown candidate already knows. It is not the number most Georgia lawyers earn, and it is not the number a public body can print.

The State Bar of Georgia, as of 1 September 2026, counted 56,610 total members, 43,342 active in good standing, 7,618 inactive, 5,616 emeritus, and 35,033 in-state active, with 13,285 out-of-state members inside the total. Combined financial-report Note 3 put membership at 56,243 at 30 June 2025 and 55,390 at 30 June 2024. Membership is required to practice in Georgia. The Bar does not keep practice-specialty data on the mailing-list extract. Employer type cannot be read from the license file. OEWS covers wage-and-salary employees and excludes most self-employed lawyers and partners of unincorporated firms. The ~23,930 jobs sit inside a larger licensed stock. Treating 43,342 actives as employed lawyers is a second category error, next to treating $235,000 as the state rate.

HB 86, signed 11 May 2025 as Act 113, amends O.C.G.A. § 45-7-4 so that salaries for Supreme Court justices, Court of Appeals judges, the State-wide Business Court judge and the Georgia Tax Court judge are set in the appropriations act and shall not exceed stated percentages of the salary of judges of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia — 100, 99 and 95 percent as described at House passage. U.S. Courts lists the 2026 district-judge salary at $249,900 (circuit $264,900; 2025 district was $247,400). FY2026 conference-committee highlights on HB 68 appropriated $10.6 million to implement the new structure, effective 1 January 2026 for the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals lines, and funded phase one of a multi-year recruitment and retention plan for attorneys and professional staff. HB 85 / Act 112, effective 1 July 2025, replaced county supplements with locality pay for superior-court judges, with a House Budget daily report of 11 February 2025 describing a salary not exceeding 90 percent of that federal figure and locality pay capped at 10 percent of the state annual salary. The same FY2026 highlights funded three new Superior Court judgeships in the Alapaha, Augusta and Douglas Judicial Circuits. Staff attorneys and law clerks follow the new judicial pay, not associate lockstep. We will not print a Georgia justice’s paycheck by multiplying a cap the enrolled act did not convert into a dollar.

BLS Southeast Information Office news release 26-1169-ATL, dated 7 July 2026, put the Atlanta legal major-group mean hourly wage at $73.68 versus $67.07 nationally, and legal occupations at 1.1 percent of Atlanta employment versus 0.8 percent nationally. The release does not print the detailed 23-1011 lawyer row. The October 1 to November 12, 2025 federal appropriations lapse delayed processing; BLS states the May 2025 panel response rate was within the normal range. Take-home is a further object the headline omits. The Tax Foundation’s 2026 Georgia rankings page listed a 5.19 percent flat individual rate and ranked the state 18th on the State Tax Competitiveness Index; HB 463, signed 11 May 2026, lowered the individual rate from 5.19 percent to 4.99 percent for tax years beginning 1 January 2026. NALP’s Class of 2024 Buying Power Index put Atlanta at 1.788 versus New York, on that class’s law-firm starting median. The index does not fold the Georgia rate. A 2026 posted salary that matches a New York printed number is therefore not equivalent take-home, and a Georgia in-house number that sits below a Midtown firm print still competes with a 4.99 percent state wage tax rather than New York’s. That is why a posted number fails when it copies the wrong layer. It is not a hiring statute, and it does not create a new practice label.

Lawyer salary in Georgia: questions from both sides of the offer

What is the lawyer salary Georgia figure a company should actually print in 2026?

There is no single statewide figure: the May 2025 occupation median is $134,830. That Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation wage, published through O*NET, describes employed lawyers across firm, in-house and government. The July 2026 matching-firm first-year base is $235,000, a different object, and the Above the Law scorecard does not list Atlanta-founded Am Law firms among the matches. Print against the seat in the metro you are hiring — Atlanta in-house against Atlanta firms, Savannah against Savannah, public desks against appropriated scales — and do not average the four layers into one “Georgia salary.”

How much do lawyers make in Atlanta compared with the rest of Georgia?

Atlanta’s May 2025 lawyer median was $138,210, only about $3,400 above the statewide median of $134,830. Savannah sat at $123,050; Macon-Bibb County at $108,200; Rome at $74,410, all on the same O*NET/BLS table. The Class of 2024 law-firm starting median was $167,500 in Atlanta (290 salaries) and $88,500 in Savannah (16 salaries), per NALP’s January 2026 Buying Power Index. Lawyer salary Atlanta is a thin premium on the state, not a second country.

Is attorney salary Atlanta the same as the 2026 lockstep?

No. Only 33.3 percent of nine Atlanta offices sat at $225,000 as of 1 January 2025, according to NALP’s 2025 Associate Salary Survey. Houston was 66.7 percent of 12 offices on the same table. Atlanta’s May 2025 75th percentile of $216,240 is where the occupation file begins to overlap last year’s large-firm mode, not where a general counsel should assume every Atlanta associate already earns $235,000. We do not treat King & Spalding or Alston & Bird as matched to the July 2026 print; the scorecard does not list them.

Should a general counsel match $235,000 to hire in-house counsel in Georgia?

Not as a statute, and not for a Savannah or Macon seat. Atlanta’s May 2025 75th percentile was $216,240, still under the July 2026 lockstep. For an Atlanta commercial or energy-regulatory associate general counsel competing with Midtown firms, the lockstep is the conversation the candidate already knows. For a first general counsel in Augusta or a staff attorney at the Georgia Department of Law, matching $235,000 is pricing the wrong product. The 14 Fortune 500 headquarters in Atlanta are the in-house buyers who actually collide with the firm cell.

How long does Sartori take to close an Atlanta associate search?

The Atlanta associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, with a 93 percent completion rate on 26 closed searches over three years. Four public-adjacent files in that book ran past the band, and we now brief that in the first call. Median offer-to-acceptance on the line is 12 working days. Counter-offer incidence is 39 percent.

Does a New York or D.C. lawyer need a Georgia license for an Atlanta in-house seat?

Yes: Georgia is not the UBE, the scaled passing score is 270, and admission on motion requires practice in 5 of the past 7 years. The MPRE cut is 75, transferred MBE scores are not accepted, and fitness certification typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. NextGen arrives in July 2028. A general counsel hiring a New York counsel into Atlanta still needs Georgia fitness plus the exam or motion — unlike a pure in-house hire in a state that has carved out a registration exemption.

BLS OEWS percentiles describe employed lawyers (firm, in-house, government) and exclude most partners' residual draws as such. NALP Atlanta first-year figures are nine participating offices as of 1 January 2025, before the July 2026 lockstep. Savannah's Class of 2024 law-firm median rests on 16 salaries. WageDex employment and Rippling means are secondary compilations of BLS OEWS May 2025; direct BLS HTML state tables could not be read. Am Law 100 dollars are firm-wide, not Atlanta-office PPP. SELC $50–60 billion and 757 MW figures are pleaded, not found. The $2.5 billion 2026 sales-tax estimate is a state revenue figure as reported by Georgia Watch. ACC in-house dollar tables did not render when accessed and are omitted. The Above the Law scorecard does not list Atlanta-founded Am Law matches.

Our own numbers — the Atlanta interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.
