Lawyer salary in Hawaii 2026: the local window versus lockstep

The dated Hawaii number sits well below the national lockstep. This page is for the lawyer who earns that figure and the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who has to pay it.

When the Honolulu number still closes, and when it does not.

A company asking what lawyer salary Hawaii looks like in 2026 is asking when a Honolulu hire still closes against the national lockstep, and when the island premium is not worth matching. Sartori maps 67,000 lawyers in New York; that file is the lockstep conversation this page is written against, not a census of Oahu.

Lens 01 · The gap The local 90th still sits under a first-year lockstep base.

WageDex’s 10 August 2026 compilation of the May 2025 BLS OEWS file puts Hawaii’s lawyer 90th percentile at $179,010. Above the Law recorded the 2026 first-year lockstep base at $235,000 on 5 June 2026. A $55,990 gap the island price index does not close.

The local window is real, posted, and below lockstep. The dated distribution is in the next section.

The 2026 lawyer salary Hawaii window is not lockstep

Open on the dated distribution. The May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics file is the last full wage-and-salary survey for Hawaii lawyers; everything else on this page is a posted band, a charter scale, or a national ladder sitting next to it.

WageDex, compiling the May 2025 BLS OEWS file on 10 August 2026, puts Hawaii lawyers (SOC 23-1011) at a statewide median of $124,990, a 10th percentile of $73,890, a 25th of $97,460, a 75th of $155,880 and a 90th of $179,010, on employment of about 2,270. The same release puts the national median at $159,670 — Hawaii 22 percent below. Rippling, publishing the same vintage on 20 July 2026, reports a Hawaii mean of $127,280, a national mean of $185,840, and an Urban Honolulu mean of $126,580. Those are employer-survey estimates of wage-and-salary workers in nonfarm establishments. They exclude most self-employed lawyers, overtime premiums, stock, and nonproduction bonuses.

The series behind that snapshot is measured, not interpolated. The state OEWS PDFs put Hawaii lawyer employment at 2,140 in May 2022 (median $99,280) and 2,300 in May 2023 (median $107,990). WageDepth’s 2024 republish of the same survey puts employment at 2,430 and the median at $116,010. Then the May 2025 republish steps employment back to 2,270 and the median up to $124,990. Do not average the four vintages into a 2026 salary. The 2025 employment dip is a survey estimate, not a headcount of bar cards. Neighbor-island cells in the May 2022 state PDF are too small to carry a 2026 offer: Maui MSA lawyers 120, mean $116,440; Hawaii County 160, mean $104,040; Kauai 50, mean $104,480. Band those figures. Do not build a neighbor-island scale from them, and do not treat them as current payroll.

Set that distribution next to the ladder a New York associate actually quotes. Above the Law’s associate compensation scorecard, dated 5 June 2026 and updated through late summer 2026, records Milbank as first mover on 2 June 2026 with a Class of 2026/2025 base of $235,000 and a Class of 2018 base of $455,000, presumed effective 1 July 2026, with McDermott, Quinn Emanuel, Sullivan & Cromwell and Norton Rose Fulbright among the firms that matched. Biglaw Investor’s 2026 class-year table lists the same first-year base through an eighth-year of $455,000. That ladder is reported large-firm lockstep. It is not a Honolulu payroll.

NALP’s 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025 and released 28 May 2025, put the overall median first-year base at $200,000 and the median at firms of 701 or more lawyers at $215,000, with $225,000 the modal first-year figure across 437 offices. Honolulu is not one of the 19 cities with a published city median. West-region offices outside those major markets had a highest median first-year of $181,900 — still above Hawaii’s OEWS 90th percentile, and that was before the June 2026 raise. The lawyer salary Honolulu conversation that a general counsel can actually close is the local distribution, not that table.

A price index is not a pay scale. The dated window above is the number a Honolulu general counsel can defend; the lockstep ladder is the number a New York associate will quote. They are not the same instrument.

A price index is not a pay scale.

03 Who pays it

Three kinds of buyer post a 2026 number. A fourth does not.

The lawyers who earn the Hawaii figure, and the employers who pay it, sit in a large public bar, a thin in-house layer, and a private-practice market of solos and firms under 15 lawyers. Lockstep is not one of those buyers.

Posted local scaleImported lockstep

  1. Public desks Attorney General deputies, city corporation counsel, prosecutors, federal GS attorneys. The scale is a charter, a commission, or an OPM table.
  2. Company desks Utility AGC, charitable-trust counsel, bank and shipping general counsel. The band is posted or it is silent; it is not a class-year ladder.
  3. Lockstep offices The comparison candidates bring into the room. This geo does not host those offices, and the local law school did not place into them.

The largest single legal employer is the State. The Department of the Attorney General’s employment page, accessed in September 2026, describes itself as continually seeking attorneys to join over 180 attorneys and 500 professional staff, and calls itself the largest legal office in the state. Open deputy postings on that check ran across administration, civil-rights litigation, complex litigation, criminal justice, employment, family law on Hilo and Maui, tax and charities, and special investigation. Pay is “Depends on Qualifications” / exempt. Do not map those seats onto a civil-service SR step. DHRD published a BU13 Professional and Scientific schedule effective 1 July 2026 (SR-26 $80,736–$114,912; SR-28 $90,816–$129,276; SR-30 $98,244–$139,812; SC-03 $114,912–$163,560), and the Compensation Plan as of 1 July 2025 (revised 20 February 2026) uses pay-group W for Legal Counsel among excluded codes. Deputy attorneys general are exempt at-will. The Administration Division vacancy (Position 102662) requires a J.D. from an accredited law school, an active Hawaii license, and admission to the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii; that division counsels the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, DAGS, Budget and Finance (including ERS and EUTF), the Land Use Commission, and the Legislature. That is a public-body general counsel desk, not a lockstep class year.

The municipal general counsel desk is the Department of the Corporation Counsel: counseling and drafting (opinions, legislation, procurement, municipal bonds, real-property tax appeals) and litigation (torts, employment, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, First Circuit and the District of Hawaii). The same Salary Commission that set the FY 2025–26 deputy band at $81,240–$203,544 also set the Corporation Counsel at $207,768 and the First Deputy at $197,376. Prior-year deputies ran $78,120–$195,720 (FY 2024–25) and $75,144–$183,216 (FY 2023–24). The prosecuting attorney deputy band is the same as corporation counsel. That is a posted public window a Honolulu head of HR can actually defend to a board.

The in-house window a corporate buyer posts is not lockstep either. Hawaiian Electric Companies, serving 95 percent of the state’s 1.4 million residents, posted multiple Oahu Legal Department vacancies in summer and fall 2026: transactional AGC or Senior AGC (current as of 4 September 2026) at AGC $141,000–$156,200 (minimum four years) and Senior AGC $159,400–$179,700 (minimum seven years, three in a specialized area); construction and federal-contracts AGC or Senior AGC (current as of 11 September 2026) on the same bands. The listing also showed a Senior AGC (corporate/public company) seat and an HR/generalist AGC seat. The bar gate is HSBA membership and a Hawaii license, or a good-standing license in another state pending Hawaii admission. In house counsel salary on this payroll tops out where the OEWS 90th percentile tops out. The postings name the work a Honolulu general counsel actually buys: commercial contracts, federal contracts and grants, public-utility regulation, labor and employment, environmental, real property, construction, securities, finance, compensation and benefits, legislation, litigation, intellectual property, IT and telecom, and privacy. That is a company legal department, not a lockstep class. Hawaiian Electric’s own AGC postings cite PUC Affiliate Transaction Requirements (D&O 35962, 19 December 2018; D&O 42409, 23 March 2026, indefinitely suspending certain ATR sections). The regulator and the utility share a talent pool. They do not share a Manhattan scale.

Other company desks exist and do not disclose cash. Kamehameha Schools’ Legal Services Group, overseen by a General Counsel and Vice President, comprises education and administration, real estate, tax, and litigation. A Honolulu-headquartered NYSE bank and a Honolulu-rooted NYSE ocean-shipping company both list a general counsel or chief administrative officer with a legal remit on their IR pages; Hawaiian Airlines’ legal seat sits under the Alaska Air Group parent. The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission named a Chief Counsel on 10 August 2026. Those are in-house seats a chief legal officer actually occupies. They are not a published GC cash figure, and this page does not invent one. Two other public desks sit next to them and do not change the window. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii investigates and prosecutes federal crimes and defends the United States in civil litigation from Honolulu; its lawyers are paid on the OPM GS-HI table already on this page, not on lockstep. The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii is the oldest and largest non-profit public-interest law firm in the state, with offices statewide. It is a legal-services employer, not a paying corporate general counsel, and it is part of the access-to-justice problem the Judiciary task force is charged with. Neither desk is a reason to match $235,000.

Honolulu full-service firms hire into real estate, land use, finance, civil litigation and hospitality — not into a national lockstep office. Cades Schutte, on an 8 January 2026 announcement, put itself at around 80 attorneys, with Honolulu plus Kahului, Kona, Lihuʻe and Waimea, and promoted into finance, real estate, corporate and litigation. McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon lists 30+ attorneys and a Kauai office. Carlsmith Ball’s Honolulu roster, accessed in 2026, sits on the order of 35 professionals at 1001 Bishop Street. Starn O'Toole Marcus & Fisher lists 16 directors, 2 senior counsel, 2 of counsel and 6 associates, with hotel, resort and sea-level-rise work on the practice list. Those promotions and those practice labels are the 2026 hiring path: real estate, land use, water, finance, hotel and commercial litigation. They are not a class-year lockstep, and no Honolulu firm careers page published one. Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel describes itself as a Honolulu full-service firm of 50-plus lawyers. None of those platforms is a 101-lawyer lockstep office, and Richardson’s Class of 2024 sent zero graduates into firms of that size.

04 The island premium

Ten percent on prices. Eighty-eight percent is not a cost-of-living argument.

Every Honolulu compensation conversation reaches for an island premium. The premium that can be measured is a regional price parity, and it does not reach the lockstep gap.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis, in news release BEA 26–10 dated 19 February 2026, put the states with the highest 2024 all-items regional price parities at California 110.7, Hawaii 110.0, and New Jersey 108.8. FRED series HIRPPALL, updated 20 February 2026, records Hawaii 2024 all-items RPP at 109.951. FRED series RPPALL46520 puts Urban Honolulu at 110.961 in 2024 (111.424 in 2023; 113.093 in 2022). California is named here as the neighboring high-RPP state on that table; this page does not explain California pay. A price parity of 110.0 means Honolulu consumption prices run about 10 percent above the national average. It does not mean a Honolulu general counsel should match a $235,000 first-year.

Do the arithmetic on the figures already on the table. The 2026 first-year lockstep base is 1.88 times the Hawaii OEWS median of $124,990. It sits $55,990 above the 90th percentile of $179,010, and $31,456 above the top of the Honolulu deputy corporation-counsel band. Deflating the $124,990 median by 1.10 yields about $113,600 in national-equivalent consumption — still below the national OEWS median of $159,670 in the same May 2025 release. The island premium is a price index, not a pay scale. A Honolulu employer matching lockstep in 2026 is paying above the local measured distribution; a Honolulu employer posting inside the OEWS interquartile or the city deputy band is posting the local window.

Federal civilian pay on island is the one statutory table that already bakes in a Hawaii differential, and even that table does not reach lockstep. OPM Salary Table 2026-HI, effective January 2026, applies a 1 percent GS increase plus 22.21 percent locality for the State of Hawaii locality pay area (FIPS 15): GS-11 $77,964–$101,359; GS-12 $93,445–$121,482; GS-13 $111,119–$144,457; GS-14 $131,310–$170,708; GS-15 $154,454–$197,200, with GS-15 step 10 capped at Executive Schedule Level IV. A separate nonforeign COLA — City and County of Honolulu 8.64 percent, matching Kauai and Maui, with Hawaii County at 2.91 percent — is not stacked on GS locality for most white-collar GS employees. A GS-14 step 1 ($131,310) sits near the Hawaii OEWS median. The GS-15 cap ($197,200) sits above the OEWS 90th and still below the 2026 first-year lockstep base.

The demand that sits under those desks is a litigation, real-estate and tourism economy, not a capital-markets one. The Hawaiʻi Judiciary’s FY2025 Annual Caseload Report, covering 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025 and transmitted 3 February 2026, records 11,095 new circuit-court civil filings and 1,073 new foreclosures; First Circuit (Oahu) accounted for 8,467 of the civil file. Total circuit-court cases new-filed (civil, criminal and other) were 16,779, with 44,833 pending at year end; First Circuit total circuit cases new were 11,296. Appellate new civil appeals were 410. The Criminal Justice Research Institute counted 14,518 statewide criminal filings in FY2025. The U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii, in Table C-1 for the 12 months ending 30 September 2025, recorded 629 civil filings — a small federal docket next to the state file. The Honolulu Board of REALTORS, on 6 January 2026, put 2025 Oahu resales at 7,298 (2,890 single-family at a median $1,139,000; 4,408 condos at a median $507,250). Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority / DBEDT, in its July 2026 fact sheet, put calendar-year 2025P visitor spending at $21.75 billion and the FY2026 transient accommodations tax at $864.7 million. MACRO’s factbook, released 14 January 2026, put 2023 defense spending into Hawaii at $10.2 billion and DoD personnel at 73,072. That is the work. It does not price a lockstep associate. A signing bonus does not turn a Honolulu seat into a lockstep seat.

A signing bonus does not turn a Honolulu seat into a lockstep seat.

05 Who earns it

The card, the pipeline, and a bar that is not the UBE.

The people who earn the Hawaii figure hold a Hawaii license. The people a New York general counsel would like to import mostly do not, and the local school does not mint lockstep associates.

Public payrollPrivate practice

  1. The public bar Government status and judges on the HSBA file, plus the Attorney General as the largest single office. This is where a large share of the W-2 median actually sits.
  2. A thin in-house layer A few hundred Active members reporting in-house counsel. Utility, trust, bank, shipping, airline-parent. The posted band is the evidence; the IR page is the title.
  3. Solos and firms under 15 The dominant private-practice shape. The 15-or-more bin starts at 15 lawyers. It is not an Am Law headcount and it is not a lockstep platform.

HSBA’s 2024 Bar Statistics & Summaries, dated 6 December 2024, count total membership of 8,327. Active (private-practice status) 3,884; Government 959; Judges 103, including five retired per diem. Combined Active, Government and Judge in Hawaii: 4,125, matching the ABA National Lawyer Population Survey figure the Judiciary restated on 23 March 2026. Inactive 3,381. Attorneys in Hawaii including inactive, by island: Oahu 4,752; Maui 350; Kauai 132; East Hawaii 236; West Hawaii 180. The Acting Chief Justice’s 16 March 2026 order, reported by the Judiciary, also notes that the 4,125 resident-active count is unchanged from the prior year and down 1.6 percent since 2015, while the national attorney population rose 5.6 percent over the same decade. The ABA Profile of the Legal Profession puts U.S. lawyers at 1.37 million in 2025, up from 1.35 million in 2024.

Inside the 3,884 Active members, the practice structure is not a lockstep pyramid. Solo 1,197; 2–5 attorneys 661; 6–14 attorneys 460; 15 or more 771; In House Counsel 334; Government (within Active structure) 128; Non Legal Entity 118; Not Applicable 215. The 15-or-more bin starts at 15. Treating 771 as BigLaw employment is a category error. Active age is equally unhelpful to anyone hoping for a deep junior bench: 20–29 only 88; 30–39 550; then 1,623 of 3,884 Active members are 60 or older (42 percent), in line with the Judiciary’s restatement that approximately 43 percent of HSBA members are over 60. New admittees by licensing year through 2023: 138, down from 206 in 2011. Pro bono hours reported for 2024: 141,868, plus $1,102,402 in pro bono financial contributions. The Task Force on Hawaiʻi Legal Services is due 30 September 2027. This is an aging, solo-heavy bar, not a lockstep recruiting pool.

HSBA Active membership by self-reported practice structure, 2024 statistics dated 6 December 2024. The 15-or-more bin starts at 15 lawyers; it is not an Am Law 200 count. In-house (334) is carried in the StatGrid above, not here.

Hawaii State Bar Association, 2024 Bar Statistics & Summaries, 6 December 2024.

The pipeline into those desks is William S. Richardson School of Law. The ABA Employment Summary for 2024 graduates (status date 17 March 2025; file stamp 1 April 2025) records 96 graduates and 89 employed: bar-admission-required or anticipated, 72 full-time long-term. Law-firm seats: 1–10 lawyers, 7; 11–25, 9; 26–50, 3; 51–100, 4; 101–250, 0; 251–500, 0; 501+, 0. The local school is a government, clerkship and small-firm feeder. In house counsel recruiters working this geo are hiring out of that feeder and out of the 334 already in-house, not out of a lockstep class.

The credential gate is the reason a New York associate cannot be dropped onto a Honolulu payroll. Hawaii bar exam components are the MBE, MEE, MPT, the Hawaii Legal Ethics Examination (15 multiple-choice questions on the Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct, 30 minutes, Question 8 on the Tuesday morning session), plus the MPRE. RSCH Rule 1.3 requires a first professional degree (J.D. or LL.B.) from an ABA-accredited law school; an LL.M. is not a substitute. An attorney not from an accredited school may sit if admitted and actively practiced in another U.S. jurisdiction for five of the six years preceding application. University of Hawaiʻi Law School full-time faculty may be admitted without examination for a limited three-year term. None of those paths is general admission on motion, and none of them is a New York waiver. The National Conference of Bar Examiners lists Hawaii as intending to administer NextGen UBE in July 2028; it does not accept legacy UBE scores or transferred MBE scores; MPRE minimum 85; minimum passing combined score 132; admission on motion “No (permitted only on a limited basis).” A two-year Supreme Court pilot, order 18 June 2025, effective 14 August 2025 and expiring 30 November 2027, carves a limited criminal-only license for people hired by the Office of the Public Defender, a county prosecutor, or the Department of the Attorney General. It does not open Hawaiian Electric AGC, Kamehameha counsel, or Cades associate seats. Legal recruiters Honolulu are, in practice, recruiting people who already hold the card or who will sit the exam.

06 When it still closes

Close this year against lockstep only if the buyer is lockstep. This buyer is not.

Sartori has worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years, for companies filling associate and in-house seats and for the firms that compete with them. The Hawaii window is the question those New York conversations keep asking, and it is the question those conversations almost never survive.

Over the trailing three years we closed 33 New York associate searches at a 94 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Of those 33 closed files, 12 were in-house or company-side seats at years 3–8. Nine of those 12 clients asked whether a Honolulu or other lower-cost market could substitute for a New York lockstep seat. Seven of those nine stalled when the candidate would not leave the lockstep conversation. Zero of the 33 closed in Honolulu. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: the New York associate file prices lockstep with precision, and it does not price Oahu at all. Companies that want a Honolulu hire need a Honolulu brief, a Honolulu card, and a Honolulu band — not a recycled New York search with the city name swapped.

The same New York interview cohort already named in the byline is where the $235,000 figure enters the room. Of 286 respondents sitting at lockstep or lockstep-adjacent associate desks over a 24-month window, 214 named a first-year base of $235,000 as the number they would bring to any Honolulu conversation. Of 67 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at companies with a New York payroll presence over an 18-month window, 41 said they would not match lockstep for a Honolulu-based seat. A chief legal officer at a New York-headquartered company with Pacific operations told us, in that cut, that matching lockstep for a Honolulu commercial counsel “would be paying Manhattan for a First Circuit docket.” A head of talent at a New York company that asked us to price a Honolulu alternative said the shortlist “died the moment someone said two hundred and thirty-five.”

Sartori’s quarterly survey, running since 2019 across a global mapping of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles, keeps returning the same shape on this question: candidates treat lockstep as a floor they can carry between coastal markets, and companies outside those markets treat it as a number they cannot defend. Hawaii is the sharp case because the local 90th percentile, the posted senior in-house ceiling and the city deputy ceiling all sit under the first-year base.

  1. Local card, local band Hawaii license in hand, posted public or utility scale, First Circuit or PUC-adjacent work. This is the hire that still closes.
  2. Local card, imported band The company has the lawyer and then matches lockstep anyway. It will fill. It will also reset every other band in the department.
  3. Imported card, imported band A New York associate, a lockstep number, and a Hawaii exam the candidate has not sat. This is the search that becomes an intake and then a pause.

  • A relocated commercial seat. A New York-headquartered company with Pacific operations asked us, on a company-side associate brief, whether the seat could sit in Honolulu at a local band. The candidate was a fifth-year on a lockstep-adjacent scale. The process ran 14 weeks and stalled when the $235,000 first-year — not even the candidate’s own rung — became the comparison. One of the seven files, of nine, that did not convert.
  • A Honolulu intake that never became a search. A Honolulu-headquartered company with a regulated-industry legal team asked us to look at a senior in-house seat. The board wanted a lockstep match against a posted senior band below $180,000. We declined to take it as a retained search. An intake is not a closed file; it is what the 33 closed New York searches do not include, and it is the honest shape of most Honolulu lockstep conversations we see.
  • A New York in-house close used as contrast. The same desk closed a years 4–6 company-side seat in New York in 11 weeks, inside a lockstep-adjacent band, at the 94 percent completion rate the envelope records. That product does not transplant. The work was capital-markets adjacent; the Honolulu docket that would have replaced it was First Circuit civil and land-use. Different work, different card, different number.

Counter-offer incidence on the New York associate desk is 37 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is the 11 working days already named. Both figures describe New York. They do not describe a Honolulu municipal deputy or a utility AGC, and quoting them as if they did would be the same error as quoting lockstep as if it were a Honolulu scale. The service view of the company-side product sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page; the New York associate product that generates the telemetry sits on our New York associate recruiting page. Companies putting a lawyer on the payroll for the first time should start with the first general counsel guide, where the sequencing questions come before the band.

07 Running the hire

Write the brief from the card and the posted band, not from Manhattan.

The company controls the requisition, the band and whether it will wait on a Hawaii exam. It does not control the lockstep conversation once that number is allowed into the room.

Your exposure is a band you cannot defend at the board, not a shortlist you cannot fill.

  • Post the local instrument. City deputy, utility AGC, GS-HI, or an OEWS interquartile. Once lockstep is in the brief, every candidate will treat it as the floor.
  • Require the Hawaii card, or budget the exam. There is no general admission on motion. A New York license is not a Honolulu start date.
  • Do not gold-plate the seat with a lockstep match. Hawaiian Electric’s senior AGC ceiling is $179,700. Paying $235,000 for a first in-house commercial lawyer resets the department.
  • Read the docket, not the coastal press. FY2025 circuit civil is foreclosure, tort and contract. Staff the work you actually have. The 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale is the comparison, not the offer.
  • Call before the band is in a board paper. We will tell you if the requisition is a New York product in Honolulu clothing. Confidential, no obligation, via the hiring desk.

Your number is the local 90th, the posted utility senior band, or the city deputy ceiling — unless you hold a lockstep seat, which this geo does not host.

  • Price the 90th, not the first-year. $179,010 is the May 2025 OEWS 90th. $179,700 is the posted Senior AGC ceiling. Those are the Honolulu tops.
  • Hold the card, or sit the exam. NextGen UBE is July 2028. The limited-license pilot does not cover in-house or firm seats.
  • Do not resign into a gap on a lockstep hope. A Honolulu company that says it will match Manhattan is usually about to discover it will not.
  • The public desk is a real ceiling, not a discount. GS-15 caps at $197,200. City deputies cap at $203,544. Corporation Counsel itself is $207,768. All three still sit under lockstep.
  • Explore on a no-names basis. This bar is small and knows itself. The candidate intake is the quiet route; do not test the market on the HSBA directory.

One more limit on our own file, because it is the one that makes the rest believable. Sartori’s New York mapping records admission, employer and practice. It does not record Hawaii bar status. Every island license we work with comes from the candidate, verified by the employer, not from the map. A page that used a New York associate desk to invent a Honolulu placement rate would be performing coverage it does not have. We do not have it. The public tables on this page are the Hawaii evidence. The New York telemetry is the lockstep evidence. They should not be blended into a single fake local product.

Lawyer pay in Hawaii: questions from both sides of the offer

What is the lawyer salary Hawaii figure for 2026?

The May 2025 BLS OEWS, compiled by WageDex on 10 August 2026, puts the statewide lawyer median at $124,990 and the 90th percentile at $179,010. Rippling, publishing the same vintage on 20 July 2026, reports a mean of $127,280 and an Urban Honolulu mean of $126,580. Those are wage-and-salary estimates for SOC 23-1011; they exclude most self-employed solos. A Honolulu company that posts inside the interquartile ($97,460–$155,880) or against a posted city or utility band is posting the local window, not a discount to lockstep.

How does Hawaii lawyer pay compare with the 2026 national lockstep?

The 2026 first-year lockstep base is $235,000, which sits $55,990 above Hawaii’s OEWS 90th percentile of $179,010. Above the Law’s associate compensation scorecard, dated 5 June 2026, records Milbank as first mover on 2 June 2026, presumed effective 1 July 2026. NALP’s 2025 survey, as of 1 January 2025, did not publish a Honolulu city median among its 19 cities. Matching lockstep on Oahu is paying above the measured local distribution.

What does in house counsel salary look like in Honolulu in 2026?

Hawaiian Electric posted Oahu associate general counsel at $141,000–$156,200 and senior AGC at $159,400–$179,700 as of September 2026. The senior ceiling is the local 90th percentile. HSBA’s 2024 statistics count 334 in-house counsel among Active members. Bank, shipping and charitable-trust general counsel seats exist on IR and trustee pages; those pages do not disclose cash. Price the in-house hire on the posted utility band, not on Manhattan.

Does Hawaii’s cost of living justify matching $235,000?

No. The BEA 2024 all-items regional price parity for Hawaii is 110.0, a 10 percent consumption-price premium, not an 88 percent wage premium. Urban Honolulu’s 2024 RPP is 111.0. Deflating the $124,990 median by 1.10 yields about $113,600 in national-equivalent consumption — still below the national OEWS median of $159,670 in the same May 2025 release. California sits next to Hawaii on the RPP table at 110.7; that is a price index, not a Honolulu pay scale.

Can a New York associate waive into a Honolulu in-house or firm seat?

No. Hawaii does not offer general admission on motion, and it will not administer NextGen UBE until July 2028. The exam still includes a Hawaii Legal Ethics Examination. A two-year Supreme Court pilot (14 August 2025–30 November 2027) carves a limited criminal-only license for public defenders, county prosecutors and the Attorney General; it does not open in-house or private-firm seats. The island premium, if any, is paid to people who sit the local exam or already hold the local card.

How long does a Honolulu legal hire take for a company?

Sartori’s New York associate desk typically fills in 6 to 12 weeks; a Honolulu seat still has to clear the Hawaii bar, which is a separate clock. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, none were Honolulu-bound. Counter-offer incidence on that desk is 37 percent. Budget the local posted band and the bar card in the brief; do not budget a lockstep match unless the buyer is a lockstep office.

OEWS May 2025 Hawaii percentiles are cited via WageDex (10 August 2026) and Rippling (20 July 2026) because BLS origin HTML for oes_hi.htm could not be read; they are republished BLS estimates, not a BLS HTML page. Hawaiian Electric bands are advertised ranges, not salaries paid. NALP city medians do not include Honolulu.
