The year sits inside every Idaho cell.

A company asking how much do lawyers make in Idaho in 2026 is asking which dated Idaho instrument still prices the Boise or Idaho Falls seat this year — the bar fee, the filing-fee schedule, the public-defender rate — not last year's national lockstep. Sartori maps 67,000 lawyers in New York; that file is the lockstep conversation this page is written against, not a census of Ada County.

Lens 01 · The license cell Every Active or House Counsel seat pays $485 this year.

The Idaho State Bar license-fee page, updated 5 February 2026, puts Active or House Counsel in the fourth full year of admission at $485 for 2026, up from $425. The Idaho Supreme Court order amending IBCR Section III made that cell effective 1 January 2026. A 2026 bar rule, not a class-year raise.

Those four lenses are why a single 2026 lockstep number fails this state. The occupation snapshot a general counsel actually writes is in the grid below. Every number is cited below.

How much do lawyers make in Idaho: the 2026 wage table

Employed-lawyer wages in this state are an OEWS distribution, not a lockstep. Boise and Idaho Falls do not share a median. Boise's 90th percentile is the only Idaho wage cell that overlaps the 2026 first-year lockstep floor.

O*NET OnLine, drawing the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program, reports Idaho lawyers (SOC 23-1011) with a May 2025 10th percentile of $50,730, a 25th of $81,520, a 75th of $139,350 and a 90th of $216,660. The U.S. 10th on that table is $78,360; the U.S. 90th is $351,600. What it measures is establishment wage-and-salary employment. It does not measure partnership draws, equity, or self-employed solo receipts. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026 and using the same May 2025 vintage, restates the national median and adds national industry cuts: federal government $178,380; legal services $157,870; local government $131,390; state government $115,330. Those industry rows are national. They are not Idaho.

WageDex, compiling the same May 2025 BLS state estimates, ranks Idaho #46 of 53 jurisdictions on the median, about 35 percent below the national figure, and puts the national mean at $185,840 on employment of 754,500. The $21,670 Idaho mean–median gap is the right tail of high earners inside a blended occupation, not a class-year bonus. Employment is wage-and-salary jobs in surveyed establishments. It is not State Bar membership.

May 2025 OEWS lawyer medians by Idaho metro. Boise leads; Idaho Falls sits $14,480 below it on the same table. Logan is a Utah-Idaho cell printed on Idaho's wage page, not a second state's regulatory story.

Boise City, which is Ada, Boise, Canyon, Gem and Owyhee Counties, carries a May 2025 25th percentile of $92,040 and a 75th of $161,120. Idaho Falls, which is Bonneville, Butte and Jefferson Counties, carries a 25th of $77,490 and a 75th of $126,840. A head of legal who briefs one Idaho number for both metros is briefing a discount the public tables do not support.

Set that distribution next to the ladder a New York associate actually quotes. Above the Law reported on 2 June 2026 that Milbank announced associate increases of $10,000 to $20,000 by class year, effective 1 July 2026, with summer associates included. Biglaw Investor’s compiled 2026 bases, accessed 11 September 2026, run $235,000 / $245,000 / $270,000 / $320,000 / $385,000 / $410,000 / $440,000 / $455,000. That is the New York-led market scale. Boise offices of scale firms may match it. NALP’s 2025 city table does not show that they already had. For the full class-year ladder, including bonuses, see the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

NALP’s June 2025 Bulletin put the overall first-year median at $200,000 as of 1 January 2025, with firms of 250 or fewer lawyers at $150,000 and firms of more than 700 lawyers at $215,000. West and South regional medians were $205,000; the Midwest was $180,000. $225,000 was the most frequently reported first-year figure — 32 percent of offices, 44.7 percent of 701-plus firms — but was not yet the overall median. Cities where at least half of offices reported $225,000 included San Francisco, Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, the Washington DC area, Charlotte and Dallas. Denver, at 44.4 percent of nine offices reporting, is the nearest Mountain West city on Table 3. Boise and Idaho Falls are absent. The July 2026 raise therefore does not automatically reprice Idaho mid-market, public, or in-house seats.

Tax Foundation’s 2026 Idaho page puts the individual income tax at a flat 5.30 percent, the corporate rate at the same 5.30 percent, and the state on the 9th rank of the 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index, with no estate or inheritance tax. A Boise scale first-year at $235,000 and an Idaho Falls OEWS-median lawyer at $95,300 pay the same marginal state rate. The wedge changes net pay versus a coastal lockstep market; it does not raise the OEWS median, and it does not recreate a lockstep premium.

Who earns the figure, and who pays it

The Idaho lawyer this page prices is not a Boise lockstep associate. Three buyer types write checks in this state: Boise-HQ and Intermountain firms, in-house desks at capital employers, and a dense public bar. Idaho Falls is a thinner Eastern docket, not a satellite of Ada County.

A Boise lockstep seatA statewide payroll

  1. Boise-HQ and Intermountain firms Idaho-headquartered full-service offices and regional branches on Main Street. They sell energy, water, real estate, construction and commercial litigation to Idaho employers. They are not a New York lockstep factory.
  2. In-house capital desks A semiconductor manufacturer, a Boise-headquartered investor-owned utility, and a hyperscale campus in Ada County. This is the check a general counsel actually writes.
  3. Public law Deputy attorneys general on a $90,000 floor, State Public Defender institutional and contract seats, and a three-division federal civil docket. None of that is a Cravath-scale M&A class.

The lawyer earning the figure is more often a small-firm, government, or clerkship lawyer than a 501-plus lockstep associate.

The University of Idaho College of Law is Idaho’s only J.D., offered from the Moscow campus or the Boise center. Its ABA Employment Summary for 2024 graduates (status as of 17 March 2025) reported 120 graduates, 98 in full-time long-term bar-admission-required seats, and 63 employed in Idaho — the largest location, ahead of 17 in Washington and 6 in Utah. Law-firm seats by size: 1–10 lawyers, 36; 11–25, 9; 26–50, 1; 51–100, 1; 101–250, 3; 251–500, 2; 501 or more, 0. Government 25 full-time long-term (26 including short-term); public interest 5; federal clerkships 3; state or local clerkships 12; business and industry 3 full-time long-term. Zero graduates in 501-plus firms is the dated contradiction to “read Idaho off the national lockstep.” Neighboring Washington and Utah appear here as employment locations on that ABA file; this page does not explain those states’ pay tables.

Credential gates are the Idaho State Bar’s. The Admissions Department report dated 4 May 2026 counted 395 people applying for admission in 2025: 184 bar-exam applicants, 62 UBE-score transfers, five House Counsel, one Emeritus, and 143 Experienced Attorney. Combined 2025 exam pass was 74.5 percent, up from 66.2 percent in 2024 (February 51.2 percent of 41 writers; July 81.1 percent of 143). Experienced Attorney applications “leveled off” in 2025 after a large 2024 increase following a Supreme Court order broadening admission without examination. That path, not a NextGen sitting, is how a mid-level in-house or DAG seat can still fill in 2026 from another state’s bar. House Counsel under IBCR 225 is a limited license for an attorney employed by a non-law-firm with an Idaho office. Five people applied for it in 2025. It is not a general Idaho practice license, and it is not a waiver from the 2026 fee grid.

The general counsel paying the figure is buying a desk at a named Idaho employer type, not a slogan called Biglaw.

Hawley Troxell, founded 1962, is headquartered in Boise with Idaho offices also in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls and Pocatello. The Boise location page lists antitrust, banking, construction, employment, energy and project finance, healthcare, IP, litigation, M&A, public finance, real estate and workers’ compensation among the practice labels. U.S. News directory extract puts the firm at 82 lawyers and 46 partners. The Idaho Falls page is a different buyer: construction, employment, healthcare, insurance, litigation and workers’ compensation, with a three-attorney people block. Givens Pursley is a Boise-only full-service desk; Chambers USA 2026 records 28 partners and 39 lawyers, with Band 1 in bankruptcy, labor and employment, natural resources and environment, and real estate, and water rights on the practice list. Best Law Firms 2026 puts the firm at size 41. Elam & Burke, Boise since 1928, posted on 5 June 2026 that it was hiring experienced litigation and transactional attorneys — not lockstep first-years. Holland & Hart’s Boise office, “part of the Boise/Treasure Valley community for more than 80 years,” lists on the order of 16 partners, 14 associates and 6 counsel on the page, against a firm-wide U.S. News figure of 509 lawyers. Parsons Behle & Latimer puts water, environmental and natural resources, and real estate on the Boise page and keeps Idaho Falls and Rexburg seats. Racine Olson, Pocatello-founded, names water, workers’ compensation, agriculture and personal injury, and serves Bonneville County including Idaho Falls. That Eastern mix prices off a Pocatello and Idaho Falls docket, not off Boise semiconductor work.

On payroll, the company-side buyers are specific. Micron’s two leading-edge Boise fabs, Idaho Power / IDACORP at Boise headquarters, and Meta’s Kuna campus in Ada County are the capital that pulls land-use, construction, environmental, utility-contract and water counsel — in-house under IBCR 225, plus Boise outside counsel. Public buyers include the Office of the Attorney General, with Deputy Attorney General seats posted through summer 2026 across Civil Litigation and Constitutional Defense, Consumer Protection, Criminal Law, Energy and Natural Resources (including the Idaho Department of Water Resources and the Water Resources Board), and State General Counsel, most starting at $90,000 DOE, and a Deputy Solicitor General starting at $130,000 posted 6 February 2026. The Idaho State Public Defender now prices rural and conflict seats on a statewide hourly schedule. The U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho holds court in Boise, Pocatello and Coeur d’Alene; Idaho Falls federal work generally goes to the Pocatello Eastern Division. Attorney salary Boise, in that public layer, is a posted floor, not a class-year ladder.

University of Idaho College of Law Class of 2024 full-time long-term destinations, status as of 17 March 2025. Firms of 1–10 lawyers and government together dwarf 501-plus seats, which printed at zero.

The same New York interview cohort already named in the byline is where the $235,000 figure enters an Idaho conversation. Of 248 respondents sitting at lockstep or lockstep-adjacent associate desks over a 24-month window, 191 named a first-year base of $235,000 as the number they would bring to any Boise conversation. Of 94 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at companies with a New York payroll presence over an 18-month window, 61 said they would not match lockstep for a Boise- or Idaho Falls-based seat. A general counsel at a Treasure Valley manufacturer told us the published first-year lockstep was “a New York product we do not buy for Ada County.” A head of legal at a Boise-headquartered investor-owned utility said they match the Boise OEWS 75th, not the Milbank floor, because the seat they are filling is energy-regulatory counsel at a local utility, not a scale-firm associate class.

Bar fee, filing fee, defender rate: the year inside the cell

A New York-led scale became $235,000 to $455,000 on 1 July 2026. The Idaho-authorized numbers a general counsel can actually read this year are a license-fee grid, a civil filing-fee Appendix, a public-defender hourly, and a judicial table that did not reset.

A New York announcementAn Idaho-authorized cell

  1. National lockstep A bellwether firm sets a class-year base. Peers matching for the same graduates turn that number into a panel wage. It describes scale-firm associates. It does not describe this state.
  2. 2026 Idaho instruments The Active and House Counsel fee grid, Appendix A civil filing fees, the State Public Defender hourly, posted DAG floors. These are the cells a buyer can verify without treating the Milbank scale as local.
  3. OEWS employed wages What covered establishments actually pay lawyers in each metro. The distribution a general counsel matches when the seat is in-house, public, or regional-firm.

The Idaho State Bar “License Fees” page, last updated 5 February 2026, publishes a two-column 2025 / 2026 schedule. Admitted before 1 July of the calendar year moves from $175 to $200; after 1 July, from $115 to $130. Active or House Counsel in the first, second or third full year moves from $320 to $350. Inactive or Emeritus moves from $150 to $170. Senior members, and members age 72 or older regardless of status, move from $70 to $80. A search extract of the Idaho Supreme Court order “In Re: Amendments to Section III of the Idaho Bar Commission Rules,” filed 14 May 2025, states that the $350 / $485 Active and House Counsel figures shall be effective 1 January 2026; the late fee for unpaid Active or House Counsel remains $100 after 1 February. Active members must also file a Trust Account Certificate and complete the Disclosure of Professional Liability Insurance form. Idaho attorneys are not required to have a trust account unless they handle client or third-party funds, and are not required to carry professional liability insurance. House Counsel is on the same Active fee grid. Hiring consequence: every Boise and Idaho Falls Active or House Counsel seat pays the new cell this year — a compliance cost on the employer (in-house) and on the solo or small-firm earner, not a lockstep raise.

Appendix A still opens the civil file. Default district-court civil opening fee is $221 (code AA) covering creditor/debtor, breach of contract, employment, real property, medical malpractice and personal injury above $10,000. Magistrate division default is $166 for the under-$10,000 versions of those claims plus adoptions, probate, custody, eviction and similar. Petition to reopen or modify a divorce is $154; small claims $69; petition for entry of judgment on a worker’s compensation award $81; guardianship or conservatorship $216; civil appeal or petition for judicial review to district court $221, including Idaho Department of Water Resources water-rights adjudication review; civil appeal to the Supreme Court $129 clerk collection with $94 remitted. The infraction fee schedule on the same rules page is separately “Updated July 1, 2025” for FY2026. Family, personal-injury, commercial and water-review desks collect and advance these fees. They are not a lawyer’s hourly rate.

On the public-defense side, the 2 April 2025 SPD budget update records that Senate Bill 1202 is the first appropriation to fund 12 months of operation. The budget raises contracted investigator rates from $65 to $85, adds $6.4 million in merit-based salary increases for attorneys and staff in 12 county-based institutional offices, and funds new offices in Elmore, Jerome, Benewah and Shoshone counties, plus Child Protection Act work. The FAQ table puts capital second chair at $125 an hour and states there are no flat-fee contracts. A $125-hour public-defense cell is a 2026 Idaho price. It is the instrument that now prices rural seats counties used to set locally.

The bench did not reset to the Court’s FY2026 request. Ballotpedia, updated 10 September 2026, puts Supreme Court associate justices at $186,508, Court of Appeals judges at $178,508, and the Idaho Public Utilities Commission at $129,648. A Judicial Council compensation package, as of 1 July 2025, puts Magistrate Judge at $164,508, District Judge at $172,508, Administrative District Judge at $175,508, Court of Appeals Chief at $181,508, and Supreme Court Chief Justice at $189,508. The Court asked that a justice’s salary be set at $215,000, which by statute would have pulled Court of Appeals to $207,000, district to $201,000 and magistrate to $193,000. That request is not the paid 2025–26 table. An Idaho district judge at $172,508 sits $77,392 below the 2026 federal district-judge rate of $249,900 on the U.S. Courts judicial compensation page (2025 district was $247,400). DAG posts at $90,000 remain the recruiting alternative to the bench, not a lockstep alternative.

What funds an Idaho legal seat in 2026

Five dated engines move seats in this state. None of them is a New York lockstep cycle. A general counsel staffing against them is staffing land-use, energy, water, construction, or docket work — and pricing the matching band.

A fab still risingA docket still open

  1. Fabs and a live campus Boise construction, annexation, CHIPS and utility-contract work at a semiconductor manufacturer, plus energy, water and closeout work at a Kuna hyperscale campus that went live this month.
  2. Large-load and water Idaho Power’s 2027 Integrated Resource Plan, special contracts, and Eastern Snake Plain methodology-order litigation that still clocks Idaho Falls water counsel in 2026.
  3. State and federal dockets A 20 percent jump in District of Idaho civil filings and a 60 percent jump in high-value state civil work, under local rules revised 17 August 2026. Trial inventory, not a scale associate class.

Micron’s Idaho expansion page, accessed 11 September 2026, describes two leading-edge high-volume fabs in Boise “creating over 17,000 jobs,” with up to $6.4 billion in CHIPS Act direct funding to support construction of two Idaho fabs and two New York fabs plus Virginia modernization, and first Idaho fab DRAM output scheduled to begin 2027. The Idaho Statesman, on 30 May 2026, described the Boise investment as about $50 billion across two fabs, a 600,000-square-foot cleanroom, and first wafers mid-2027. On 24 June 2026 the same paper reported that Micron had paid Boise and the Ada County Highway District more than $32 million in planning, development and impact fees through May (Boise just over $25 million; ACHD $7.1 million). On 7 July 2026, Planning and Zoning recommended annexing another 240 acres; if approved, Micron will have annexed more than 1,140 acres into Boise since 2022. Reuters, on 20 August 2026, reported plans to spend $10 billion over the next decade on Micron Research Labs in Boise. Treat the $50 billion and $10 billion figures as announced capital, not 2026 cash out the door. The fees already paid are measured cash. That is demand for Boise land-use, construction, environmental, tax-incentive, government-affairs and utility-contract counsel — in-house plus Boise energy and real-estate desks — now through 2027.

Meta’s Data Centers post dated 3 September 2026 says the Kuna campus is “online and operational,” at more than $1.2 billion, with 1,600 skilled-trade workers at peak construction, more than $100 million in water and wastewater systems transferred to the City of Kuna, 645 MW of new renewable energy in Ada County, and Idaho Power’s Clean Energy Your Way large-customer green tariff. Data Center Dynamics, on 4 September 2026, recorded that the project was originally about $800 million and 960,000 square feet, paused and redesigned for AI and liquid cooling. That is 2026 energy-regulatory, water-rights, municipal-finance and construction-closeout work in the Boise MSA. Water-restoration and green-tariff work continues after go-live. It is not a 501-plus firm office.

Idaho Power, a locally operated energy company headquartered in Boise, lists 2,100 employees, nameplate generation of 3,506 MW, a 2025 summer peak of 3,644 MW on 8 July 2025, and an all-time summer peak of 3,793 MW on 22 July 2024; parent IDACORP Inc. is also in Boise. An 8 September 2026 item starts the 2027 Integrated Resource Plan Advisory Council. Meta’s own post says it worked with Idaho Power years in advance and pays the full cost of the data center’s energy use. PUC, special-contract and transmission work for Micron and Meta is a 2026–2027 Boise energy-desk cycle, not a New York finance cycle.

Eastern Idaho prices off water. An IDWR July 2026 court presentation records the Snake River Basin Adjudication, as of 7 July 2026, at 159,012 decreed rights, 196 pending decree and 449 closed, plus de minimis domestic and stock motions still moving. The Idaho Supreme Court, in City of Idaho Falls v. Idaho Department of Water Resources, Docket 52102, decided 25 February 2026, dismissed an appeal by Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer cities with junior groundwater rights that had challenged IDWR methodology orders after a Surface Water Coalition delivery call — the cities had failed to petition for review of the operative Sixth Methodology Order — and denied attorney fees under Idaho Code § 12-117(1). The Attorney General careers page still listed a Deputy Attorney General seat advising IDWR and the Water Resources Board as of 27 May 2026, starting at $90,000. Idaho Falls and Twin Falls water counsel, plus Boise IDWR deputies, are on a 2026 conjunctive-management clock. Neighboring Utah water administration is named only as a contrast; this page does not explain it.

The dockets underneath those desks are larger this year. Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts Table C, for the 12 months ending 30 September 2025, puts District of Idaho civil cases filed at 749 against 624 in 2024 (+20.0 percent), terminated 637 against 561 (+13.5 percent), pending 831 against 719 (+15.6 percent). Ninth Circuit civil filings rose 15.7 percent in the same window. Local civil and criminal rules were revised and adopted 17 August 2026, including Loc. Civ. R. 54.2 (Award of Attorney Fees) and Loc. Civ. R. 83.4 (Bar Admission). KMVT, on 22 January 2026, reporting the Chief Justice’s 2026 State of the Judiciary address, put Idaho’s 154 trial-court judges against nearly 58,500 criminal cases in fiscal year 2025, about 3,900 juvenile corrections cases, and nearly 93,000 civil filings, a 17 percent increase from two years earlier. High-value civil cases involving business disputes, medical malpractice and personal injury increased 60 percent over the same period. The Judicial Branch was not seeking additional general-fund money that year. Boise and Idaho Falls private civil desks, and county prosecutor and SPD criminal desks, are working a larger 2026 inventory without a new judicial-salary settlement.

How the Idaho seat actually fills

We have worked in the New York associate market for more than 10 years, for companies putting lawyers on their own payroll and for the firms that compete with them. The Idaho window is the question those New York conversations keep asking, and it is the question those conversations almost never survive.

Over the trailing three years we closed 33 New York associate searches at a 94 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Of those 33 closed files, 14 were in-house or company-side seats at years 3–8 and 19 were firm-side. Of the 14 company seats, 8 asked whether a Boise, Idaho Falls or other Mountain West market could substitute for a New York lockstep seat. Six of those eight stalled when the candidate would not leave the lockstep conversation. Zero of the 33 closed in Boise or Idaho Falls. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: the New York associate file prices lockstep with precision, and it does not price Ada County or Bonneville County at all. Companies that want a Boise hire need a Boise brief, an Active or House Counsel card, and a Boise band — not a recycled New York search with the city name swapped.

Of the 19 firm-side New York associate mandates, 3 stalled past 12 weeks because the client briefed a $235,000 lockstep seat against a regional floor the candidates already knew. We still close the file. We close it later, and the company or the firm pays the cost of a second list while we do. Completion on the line is 94 percent. Time-to-fill on those three files ran past the 6-to-12-week band. Counter-offer incidence on the New York associate desk is 37 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is the 11 working days already named. Both figures describe New York. They do not describe a Boise DAG or an Idaho Falls contract defender, and quoting them as if they did would be the same error as quoting lockstep as if it were an Idaho scale.

Sartori’s quarterly survey, running since 2019, keeps returning the same shape on this question: candidates treat lockstep as a floor they can carry between coastal markets, and companies outside those markets treat it as a number they cannot defend. Idaho is a sharp case because the statewide 90th percentile, the Idaho Falls 90th, the posted DAG floor and the SPD hourly all sit off the first-year base, while Boise’s 90th is the one cell that overlaps it.

Closes this yearDoes not close

  1. Local card, local band Idaho Active or House Counsel in hand, posted public or OEWS-percentile band, Boise energy or Idaho Falls water work. This is the hire that still closes.
  2. Local card, imported band The company has the lawyer and then matches lockstep anyway. It will fill. It will also reset every other band in the department.
  3. Imported card, imported band A New York associate, a lockstep number, and an Idaho exam the candidate has not sat. This is the search that becomes an intake and then a pause.

Three composites from that New York book, described by tier and type only.

  • A relocated energy seat. A New York-headquartered company with Intermountain operations asked us, on a company-side associate brief, whether the seat could sit in Boise at a local band. The candidate was a fifth-year on a lockstep-adjacent scale. The process ran 14 weeks and stalled when the $235,000 first-year — not even the candidate’s own rung — became the comparison. One of the six files, of eight, that did not convert.
  • A Boise intake that never became a search. A Boise-headquartered company with a regulated-industry legal team asked us to look at a senior in-house seat. The board wanted a lockstep match against a local OEWS-percentile band. We declined to take it as a retained search. An intake is not a closed file; it is what the 33 closed New York searches do not include, and it is the honest shape of most Boise lockstep conversations we see.
  • A New York in-house close used as contrast. The same desk closed a years 4–6 company-side seat in New York in 11 weeks, inside a lockstep-adjacent band, at the 94 percent completion rate the envelope records. That product does not transplant. The work was capital-markets adjacent; the Boise docket that would have replaced it was PUC special-contract and land-use. Different work, different card, different number.

For the in-house hire itself, the service is in-house and general counsel recruiting. For the associate desk that generates the telemetry, see New York associate recruiting. National in-house cash, which lists U.S. metros and does not own this state table, sits on the 2026 in-house counsel salary benchmark. Companies putting a lawyer on the payroll for the first time should start with the first general counsel guide, where the sequencing questions come before the band. A general counsel who wants the metro named before the search opens should start with the brief, not the lockstep line.

Bar-fee schedules, OEWS tables, NALP, dockets and admissions rules

The statewide median is an OEWS establishment wage. The 2026 cells are a license-fee grid, a filing-fee Appendix and a public-defender hourly. The lockstep is a New York announcement. Sartori figures are the New York associate-line research program.

OEWS cells are establishment wages for employed lawyers, SOC 23-1011, May 2025, not partnership draws. Lockstep bases are a national class-year scale, not an Idaho-adopted floor. The Idaho State Bar District 1 count is one judicial district's licensees, not a statewide job count. Micron's about-$50 billion Boise figure and Meta's $1.2 billion Kuna campus are announced capital, not 2026 in-house legal headcount. The $215,000 justice figure is a FY2026 request, not the paid table.

Idaho lawyer pay: common questions

How much do lawyers make in Idaho in 2026?

The statewide lawyer median is $103,400 as of May 2025, against a U.S. median of $159,670 on the same OEWS table. O*NET OnLine republishes the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for SOC 23-1011; the vintage is May 2025. That median is establishment wage-and-salary employment. It is not a Boise lockstep first-year, not a partnership draw, and not a self-employed receipt. Boise City sits at $109,780; Idaho Falls sits at $95,300. A general counsel matching this state needs that metro split, plus the 2026 bar-fee, filing-fee and public-defender instruments, not a single class-year number.

What is lawyer salary Boise versus Idaho Falls in 2026?

Boise City’s lawyer median is $109,780; Idaho Falls sits at $95,300, a $14,480 gap on the May 2025 OEWS table. Boise’s 90th percentile is $242,260; Idaho Falls’ is $182,830. Boise City covers Ada, Boise, Canyon, Gem and Owyhee Counties; Idaho Falls covers Bonneville, Butte and Jefferson. A head of legal who treats Idaho Falls as a Boise satellite discount in name only is arguing with the table the Bureau actually published.

Does Idaho pay the 2026 BigLaw lockstep of $235,000?

Not as a statewide floor. NALP’s June 2025 Bulletin, reporting the 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey as of 1 January 2025, never lists Boise or Idaho Falls among the 19 cities in Table 3. Denver, the nearest Mountain West city tabulated, had 44.4 percent of offices on the then $225,000 floor. The Milbank scale of $235,000 to $455,000, effective 1 July 2026, is the panel wage at scale firms. It is not the Idaho-authorized floor a general counsel can read on the bar-fee page, the filing-fee Appendix, or a DAG posting.

What should a general counsel budget for in house counsel salary Boise in 2026?

Budget the local OEWS percentiles and the posted public cells, not the $235,000 lockstep. Boise’s employed-lawyer 75th percentile is $161,120 on the May 2025 OEWS table; the statewide 75th is $139,350. House Counsel sits on the same 2026 fee grid as Active members — $350 in years 1–3 and $485 from the fourth year. No dated, clean, non-search-firm survey of mid-level in-house Idaho cash for 2025 or 2026 sits in the sources for this page. That counsel-level band is omitted, not guessed.

What does a public lawyer earn in Idaho in 2026?

Deputy Attorney General posts in Boise started at $90,000 in 2026; the State Public Defender pays contract counsel $125 an hour. A Deputy Solicitor General posting dated 6 February 2026 starts at $130,000, DOE. The Attorney General of Idaho is posted at $146,730. An Idaho district judge sits at $172,508 as of 1 July 2025, which is $77,392 below the 2026 federal district-judge rate of $249,900. Those are dated public instruments. They are not lockstep cells.

How long does a Boise legal hire take for a company?

Sartori’s New York associate desk typically fills in 6 to 12 weeks; a Boise seat still has to clear the Idaho bar, which is a separate clock. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, none were Boise- or Idaho Falls-bound. Counter-offer incidence on that desk is 37 percent. Budget the local posted band and the Active or House Counsel card in the brief; do not budget a lockstep match unless the buyer is a lockstep office.
