Lawyer salary in Michigan, 2026: the posted number that does not close.
A Dearborn general counsel posting $195,000 looks generous against the statewide wage survey and still loses the labor seat to a first-year scale that moved to $235,000 on 1 July 2026. This page is for the company that writes that check and the lawyer who has to live on it.
Four 2026 numbers. Only one of them is the offer.
The dated lawyer salary Michigan figure that fails to close a 2026 in-house seat is $195,000. Sartori maps about 67,000 lawyers in New York. Midwest in-house bids show up on that file as competing offers, not as a second city census.
Full-time legal-department in-house counsel, State Bar of Michigan 2026 Economics of Law survey, 2025 income, n=286. This is the number a general counsel posts. It is not the number that closes the seat. State Bar of Michigan 2026 ↗
Finance believes the wage survey. The general counsel posts the in-house median. The candidate is holding the scale. The full 2026 table sits in the next section.

The 2026 lawyer salary Michigan table is four markets, not one.
Open on the dated number. Then decide which market you are actually hiring in — employed-lawyer wages, in-house respondent income, regional-firm first-year bases, or the national scale.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey for May 2025, reprinted by DOL O*NET, puts employed Michigan lawyers at a median of $130,520 ($62.75 an hour), with a 10th percentile of $77,180, a 25th of $100,160, a 75th of $172,340 and a 90th of $238,370. The same release puts the national lawyer median at $159,670. Those are employer-survey straight-time wages. They exclude most self-employed lawyers, benefits, overtime premiums, stock and nonproduction bonuses. They are what a compensation committee already believes “a Michigan lawyer” earns. They are not what a labor counsel with a live offer from a Detroit national-platform office will accept.
The State Bar of Michigan 2026 Economics of Law survey, covering 2025 income, is the clean dated in-house number. Invitations went to 32,816 members; 4,652 records were retained, a 14.2 percent response. Full-time legal-department in-house counsel (n=286) reported a 25th percentile of $138,732, a median of $195,000, a mean of $256,166, a 75th of $272,000 and a 95th of $500,000. That $195,000 is the figure a head of legal takes to Finance. The 2023 survey wave, covering 2022 income, put a single in-house-counsel row at a $165,000 median (n=244). The respondent pool moved. The instruments are not identical — 2026 splits legal-department counsel from in-house counsel sitting outside the legal department (n=70, median $149,511) — but the direction is not a rounding error.
NALP’s 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025 and reported by National Jurist on 2 June 2025, put the median first-year associate base at $200,000 across 437 responding offices, $215,000 in firms of more than 700 lawyers, and $150,000 in firms of 250 or fewer. Detroit is not among the 19 cities with detailed analyses. For locations outside those 19 cities, the South and Midwest median first-year base was $160,000. Six of the 19 cities — Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, San Francisco and the Washington, DC area — already sat at a $225,000 median on that January 2025 date. Intellectual property first-year median was $225,000. That is the regional-firm number, and it is already above the Michigan in-house median’s neighbor, the first-year private-practice respondent median of $73,500 (n=52) in the State Bar survey.
Then the scale moved. Above the Law, on 1 July 2026, reported that Norton Rose Fulbright matched the new Milbank associate scale effective that day: $235,000 for the classes of 2026 and 2025, then $245,000 / $270,000 / $320,000 / $385,000 / $410,000 / $440,000 / $455,000. That ladder is a global firm’s announced scale for associates billing 1,900 hours. It is not a Michigan office scale. It is the offer University of Michigan Law’s private-practice graduates were already clustering on: the school’s Class of 2024 NALP table showed private-practice 25th, 50th and 75th all at $225,000. The $195,000 in-house median sits $40,000 below the July 2026 first-year base. It sits $64,480 above the OEWS statewide median. That is why it looks generous in a compensation review and poor in a candidate’s other email.

First-year associate n=52 is a thin cell; read $73,500 as a respondent median, not a census of every Michigan first-year. Equity-partner $345,500 (n=633) is the other end of the same instrument. Source: State Bar of Michigan 2026 Economics of Law survey.
The $195,000 number looks rich against OEWS and poor against the scale that still hires Michigan Law.
The buyer is a general counsel. The competing bidder is a scale firm.
The unfilled 2026 seat sits inside a Dearborn or Detroit OEM, a Tier 1 supplier, an investor-owned utility, or a West Michigan manufacturer — not on a New York partnership committee.
Company payrollThe offer that beats it
- OEM Office of General Counsel Labor, tax controversy, transactions and market compliance, NHTSA, warranty. Hybrid at a Dearborn or Detroit hub. The general counsel writes the requisition.
- Supplier, utility, West Michigan manufacturer The same labels at a different balance sheet: supply-chain commercial, energy regulatory, plant labor. A head of legal, not a hiring partner, signs the offer.
- The scale office that still hires the class A Detroit national-platform office or a Chicago or New York 501-plus seat. This is the competing offer. It is not another in-house desk.
The State Bar of Michigan’s July 2025 statewide demographics put 34,165 active members in Michigan residence. Occupational area among those residents: private practice 15,671 (45.9 percent); government 3,437 (10.1 percent); corporate counsel the 3,324 already on the grid above; legal services 2,497 (7.3 percent); judiciary 1,106 (3.2 percent). Oakland County holds 11,178 resident actives (32.7 percent); Wayne 6,310 (18.5 percent). The 100-plus firm band is the Michigan shop that competes with OEM pay; solo and small shops bill family, personal-injury, criminal and probate work and do not post the unfilled OEM number. The competing offer is not another in-house desk. It is the national first-year base.
The employer careers category for Ford’s Office of General Counsel, accessed on 11 September 2026, listed live U.S. lawyer titles including Senior Counsel, Labor & Employment (Dearborn); Senior Tax Counsel, U.S. Tax Planning, Controversy & Transactions (Dearborn); and Lead Counsel, Transactions & Market Compliance (remote-eligible). Those seats sit inside the company. Practice labels on the category page are labor and employment, U.S. tax controversy and transactions, and transactions and market compliance. A general counsel buying those labels is not buying a first-year associate.
Outside counsel to those desks is a short list of Michigan-headquartered platforms, named here as market landscape, not as case studies. Honigman’s automotive and manufacturing group describes itself as primary outside counsel to OEMs and Tier 1s, with a Detroit nerve center, and a labor practice covering NLRB, EEOC, MIOSHA, WARN and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Dickinson Wright’s automotive and mobility menu runs from supply chain and troubled suppliers through product liability, recalls and warranties. Dykema’s Automotive, Mobility, and Transportation group states more than 140 attorneys and government-policy professionals nationwide and runs an annual summit aimed at in-house legal professionals. Miller Canfield, Detroit headquarters since 1852, lists NHTSA/TREAD work, Section 301 tariffs, ITC and national discovery for product, class and warranty. Warner Norcross + Judd states a book of more than 200 auto suppliers and a policy of not representing OEMs on supply-chain disputes. Miller Johnson, Grand Rapids / Detroit / Kalamazoo, states it serves as general outside counsel to a large Oakland County Tier 1 with annual sales in excess of $1 billion and as general counsel to dozens of West Michigan Tier 1–3 suppliers. Foley & Lardner’s Detroit office — over 50 lawyers and legal professionals, 25 years in the city as of its 29 October 2025 firm note — is the out-of-town national seat that posts closer to the scale.
The public buyer is a different ladder. The Michigan Department of Attorney General’s organization chart, last revised 6 July 2026, splits two utility desks: Public Service Division (counsel to the Michigan Public Service Commission and MPSC Staff) and Special Litigation Division (utility consumer and ratepayer advocate). Public Service represents the MPSC in Michigan circuit courts, the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, in federal district courts and the D.C. and Sixth Circuits, and before DOE, FERC, FCC and FHWA. Pay is the classified Attorney Staff-E / Senior / Specialist schedule, not an OEM Lead Counsel range. The Eastern District of Michigan’s 2025 annual report records 14 active district judges and four senior judges, with courthouses in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Bay City, Flint and Port Huron. Those volumes buy Assistant U.S. Attorney, federal-defender and term law-clerk seats at GS and JSP rates. They compete for the same Michigan-barred mid-levels. They do not set the OEM posted salary.
Credential gates decide who can even sit the in-house seat. NCBE’s Michigan jurisdiction page, accessed 11 September 2026, records a Uniform Bar Exam passing score of 268, an MPRE minimum of 85, transferred UBE score maximum age of three years, and admission on motion after 3 of the past 5 years of practice — a definition that includes in-house corporate, government, military, law teaching and judicial court of record. NextGen UBE is intended for July 2028. Michigan Rule of Professional Conduct 5.5(d) lets a lawyer admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction counsel a Michigan employer without a Michigan license, provided the work is not a service for which the forum requires pro hac vice admission. It does not authorize appearance in Michigan state or federal courts, or advice to anyone other than the employer. Foreign lawyers are ineligible. Board of Law Examiners Rule 5 adds a special certificate for a lawyer practicing in an institutional setting; the certificate expires automatically when that employment ends. A New York or Illinois lateral can join a Dearborn Office of General Counsel without sitting the Michigan exam. The general counsel who later needs courtroom authority has a second gate.
The 2026 calendar is labor, trade, safety and load — not a hiring slogan.
The posted salary is failing against a stack of dated federal and state moves that all land on the same OEM, supplier and utility desks.
Labor clockLoad on the grid
- Contracts still running Big Three labor administration, WARN, plant-idling and EV-battery coverage through the remaining term. Senior labor counsel, not a first-year.
- Origin and tariff Content certification, USMCA review, supply-chain commercial. In-house transactions and market-compliance seats.
- Product safety Automatic-emergency-braking design freeze, TREAD reporting, warranty litigation. Regulatory senior counsel inside the Office of General Counsel.
- Energy and large load IRP, clean-energy and data-center special contracts. IOU in-house regulatory counsel and the Attorney General’s utility desks.
The UAW announced ratification of the 2023 contracts covering 150,000 members at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, with 64 percent of voting members in favor and wage gains of at least 33 percent over the life of the agreements after COLA. EV and battery jobs were brought under the national agreements. The Stellantis salaried tentative agreement states the new agreement, if ratified, runs four years and nine months and expires 30 April 2028. The hiring consequence is Senior Counsel / Lead Counsel, Labor & Employment inside Dearborn, Detroit, Warren and Auburn Hills Offices of General Counsel, plus regional-firm labor lawyers on NLRB, WARN, CBA administration and plant-idling. Seniority is an 8-to-15-year labor specialist. It is not a first-year associate.
Proclamation 10908, published at 90 Fed. Reg. 14705 on 3 April 2025, imposed a 25 percent ad valorem tariff, in addition to other duties, on specified automobiles entered on or after 12:01 a.m. EDT 3 April 2025, and on automobile parts no later than 3 May 2025. USMCA-qualifying automobiles may apply the 25 percent only to non-U.S. content if Commerce approves a U.S.-content submission; overstatement of U.S. content triggers the 25 percent on the full value. No drawback. USTR’s 2026 USMCA Autos Report to Congress — the third of five reports required by section 202A(g) of the USMCA Implementation Act — puts the Joint Review of the Agreement on 1 July 2026. Alternative Staging Regimes expired in 2025. Industry-reported U.S.-origin content of vehicles built in Canada and Mexico fell to an estimated 50 percent and 35 percent respectively in 2024, from 85 percent and more than 60 percent in 2017, as quoted by USTR from AAPC. The seat this creates is origin, content and supplier-contract counsel, mid-to-senior, not a junior commercial lawyer learning the UCC.
On 12 February 2026 the Environmental Protection Agency finalized rescission of the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding and repeal of subsequent GHG emission standards for on-highway vehicles and engines; the final-rule PDF on the same page is dated published 18 February 2026. Manufacturers no longer have future GHG measurement, control and reporting obligations for highway engines and vehicles, including prior model years; criteria air-pollutant rules remain. Public Law 119-15, approved 12 June 2025, disapproved the EPA California Clean Air Act waiver covering Advanced Clean Trucks and related heavy-duty provisions (88 Fed. Reg. 20688, 6 April 2023). Neither action removes NHTSA product-safety or warranty demand. FMVSS No. 127, 89 Fed. Reg. 39686 (9 May 2024), requires automatic emergency braking including pedestrian AEB on light vehicles, with manufacturers meeting all provisions by 1 September 2029. Design-freeze work sits in 2026–2029. The Office of General Counsel seat is Senior Counsel, Regulatory — NHTSA and FMVSS — not a GHG-compliance build-out that the 12 February 2026 rule just unwound.
In-state, Public Act 231 of 2023 (IRP process, MCL 460.6t) took effect 13 February 2024 and Public Act 235 (clean energy 80 percent by 2035 / 100 percent by 2040; renewable 50 percent by 2030 / 60 percent by 2035; storage target 2,500 MW) took effect 27 February 2024. The Michigan Public Service Commission issued a final order in Case No. U-21867 on 18 December 2025 updating IRP filing requirements. On the same day, in Case No. U-21990, the Commission conditionally approved DTE Electric special contracts for a 1,383 MW Washtenaw County data center in Saline Township, with a 19-year minimum term, 80 percent minimum billing demand, load-shed priority, and a matching 1,383 MW energy-storage agreement over 15 years. DTE announced an anticipated 2026 IRP filing on or about 24 September 2026 in Case No. U-22168, including certificates of necessity for new dispatchable generation including an approximately 1,400 MW combined-cycle facility. Those dockets staff IOU in-house energy regulatory counsel and the Attorney General’s Public Service and Special Litigation divisions. They are not the Dearborn labor seat. They are why a West Michigan or southeast-Michigan utility general counsel is in the same 2026 pay argument.
Labor-and-employment counsel are not waiting on a federal noncompete ban. The FTC’s own rule page states the Noncompete Rule is not in effect and is not enforceable; a district court stopped enforcement on 20 August 2024, and on 5 September 2025 the FTC took steps to dismiss its Fifth Circuit appeal. Michigan automotive employers continue to draft and litigate restrictive covenants under state law. Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act expansion (Public Act 6 of 2023, signed 16 March 2023) added sexual orientation and gender identity or expression as protected classes; that docket is live, not a new 2026 statute. Dykema’s 2026 Automotive Trends Report, labor-and-employment chapter, recorded immigration and work authorization as a 2026 legal-challenge priority for 65 percent of industry respondents (up from 42 percent) and noncompete and trade-secret enforcement for 45 percent (up from 22 percent). That is a buyer survey of automotive legal work, not a job count. It matches the live Ford Senior Counsel, Labor & Employment posting.
Capital behind those desks is not a boom tape. PwC’s Automotive 2026 U.S. deals midyear outlook, dated 17 June 2026, put U.S. automotive M&A deal value down 60 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026, annualizing at about $19 billion. Ford’s Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025, received 11 February 2026, estimates reasonably possible costs in excess of accruals for material field-service actions up to about $1.7 billion, and reasonably possible loss in excess of accruals for material non-pattern legal, tax and regulatory matters up to about $0.6 billion. The warranty stock on the grid above is why the Office of General Counsel buys Lead Counsel seats in controversies, regulatory and labor rather than posting first-year jobs. A shrinking deal tape does not retire that docket.
The competing offer is not another in-house desk. It is the national first-year base.
Metro wages, classified bands, and the downtown hourly rate.
A lawyer earning the figure needs the geography and the public ladders. A general counsel paying it needs to know which of those ladders is not the competitor.
Traverse City’s employed-lawyer median in the same May 2025 OEWS table was $107,460; Northern Michigan nonmetropolitan $96,320; Upper Peninsula nonmetropolitan $98,900; Muskegon-Norton Shores $97,300. Those cells describe employed-lawyer wages in smaller markets. They do not describe the OEM posted salary, and they are not the competing offer. A head of legal in Grand Rapids hiring a commercial counsel for a Tier 1 is in the Detroit-adjacent argument, not the Traverse City one.
Fee data is not salary, and it is worth keeping in its own sentence. The State Bar of Michigan 2026 survey put all private-practice hourly rates at a $350 median (n=2,102). Offices with more than 50 FTE attorneys locally sat at a $593 median (n=223). Downtown Detroit and New Center area median was $555 (n=137; 75th $810; 95th $1,240). Oakland County south of M-59 $395 (n=457). Grand Rapids area $403 (n=208). Ann Arbor area $385 (n=107). Lansing area $325 (n=129). Upper Peninsula $275 (n=22). Field-of-practice medians included business/commercial litigation $455, corporate and business $400, intellectual property $468, securities $625, insurance defense $200. About 11 percent of private practitioners omitted rates. A general counsel reading $555 as a W-2 equivalent has misread the table. A lawyer reading it as proof the in-house median is low has the right instinct and the wrong instrument.

NEREs received a 3 percent base increase on 1 October 2025 under the Civil Service plan introduction. OPM Salary Table 2026-DET adds a 29.12 percent locality to the GS schedule; GS-15 is capped at $197,200 (EX-IV) from step 8. Circuit judges sat at $264,900 in 2026 on the Administrative Office table. The State Officers Compensation Commission’s 2025 report records that previously approved salaries continue for 2027 and 2028 if the 25 percent determination (Justice $226,854) is not approved, and that staff reported the legislature did not approve the prior cycle’s 7 percent 2025 and 2026 justice raises.
Your exposure is a start date on a labor, regulatory or warranty seat, not a statewide average.
- Name the competing offer in the brief. A Detroit national-platform office, a Chicago scale seat, or another OEM. If you cannot name it, you are still pricing against OEWS.
- Separate the legal specification from the pay specification. The first is NHTSA, ELCRA, origin, IRP. The second is whether Finance will reopen past the in-house median.
- Do not staff an OEM seat off the classified schedule. Assistant Attorney General bands are a different market. They explain why public laterals apply. They do not close Dearborn.
- Budget the counter-offer. Scale offices defend a class-year number; companies defend a requisition. Both will move, and the files that ignore that fact are the ones that run long.
Your number is a seat, not a statewide median, and the instrument you are reading changes the answer by six figures.
- Read the instrument first. OEWS is employed-lawyer wages. The State Bar survey is respondent gross income. NALP is an office survey. The scale is an announcement. Mixing them produces a fantasy band.
- A Michigan license is not always the gate. Rule 5.5(d) covers employer-only counsel. Courtroom authority is a second conversation, and the special certificate dies with the job.
- Classified and GS ceilings are real ceilings. GS-15 in the Detroit locality caps at $197,200. Senior Executive Attorney 21 tops out at $198,040 before lump-sum adders. Commercial in-house bands do not cap the same way.
- Test the market without a name on the street. The 100-plus firm band in this state is small and talks to itself. Our in-house counsel candidate page is the quiet read; the company brief belongs on in-house counsel recruiting.
The posted median is where our clock breaks.
Sartori has worked the associate line for more than 10 years. The New York desk is the feeder Michigan general counsel are bidding against. The uncomfortable finding is that our own 6-to-12-week band does not hold when the company will not reopen the number.
Over the trailing three years we closed 33 New York associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks and a median 11 working days from offer to signature. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 37 percent. Of those 33 closed files, 12 were automotive, products or labor seats whose candidates were also being priced by Midwest in-house desks over the same three-year window. Seven of those 12 ran past the 12-week band when the competing in-house bid sat on the survey median and the company would not discuss a reopen. We still completed most of the 33. The clock is what failed. A page that only published the 6-to-12-week band would be selling a timeline this segment does not keep.
Across that New York interview cohort (1,675 structured interviews), 214 of the 268 respondents who had sat inside a Midwest OEM, supplier or utility legal department over a 24-month window told us the posted in-house number lost them to a scale firm that still paid the national first-year base. A general counsel at a Dearborn-area global OEM put it without decoration: the figure looked generous against the wage survey and still lost a labor counsel to a Detroit national-platform office. A head of legal at a West Michigan Tier 1 said the competing offer was never another in-house desk. Quarterly surveys running since 2019 keep returning the same shape: company-side Finance anchors on OEWS; the candidate anchors on the scale.
Two anonymized composites from that associate book, described by category only. A Dearborn OEM labor-counsel brief arrived posted at the in-house median. Two of three shortlisted names held competing conversations at a Detroit national-platform office. The company reopened the band; the file closed in 10 weeks, inside the published timeline, with a signature in 11 working days. A second file, an automotive products associate seat at a Michigan-headquartered 100-plus firm, drew a supplier general counsel as the competing bidder. The firm’s counter-offer landed inside the 37 percent incidence. The candidate stayed. The company’s search reset. Neither composite names a person, a firm or an employer. Both sit inside the 12 automotive, products or labor files and inside the 33.
What the file cannot see is also worth stating. That New York mapping records admission, employer and practice. It is not a Michigan W-2 census, and it does not record the posted band on a Dearborn requisition. Globally the research program maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. They do not invent a Michigan interview cohort. Google Ads Keyword Planner, U.S. location, measured 11 September 2026, recorded 170 monthly searches for the string this page is built on. Volume is not a salary. It is why the dated number has a page.
If you are the general counsel, the practical sequence is short. Write the legal specification (labor, NHTSA, origin, warranty, IRP) as one document and the pay specification as another. Name the competing offer before the first approach. Put authority to reopen past the in-house median in the brief, or accept that the file may run past 12 weeks. If you are the lawyer earning the figure, read which instrument produced the number you were quoted, and do not resign a scale seat into an in-house median that Finance will not reopen. The service view of the company brief is in-house and general counsel recruiting; the associate feeder that Michigan companies bid against is associate and attorney recruiting. How we build the underlying file is on our methodology page.
Lawyer salary in Michigan: questions from both sides of the offer
What is the lawyer salary Michigan median in 2026?
The BLS OEWS May 2025 median for employed Michigan lawyers is $130,520. That is an employer-survey wage for SOC 23-1011, not a posted offer: it excludes most self-employed lawyers, benefits, stock and nonproduction bonuses. The number a general counsel actually posts is usually the in-house figure. Full-time legal-department counsel reported a $195,000 median on 2025 income in the State Bar of Michigan 2026 Economics of Law survey (n=286). First-year private-practice associates in that same survey sat at a $73,500 median (n=52). Neither of those is the offer that still hires University of Michigan Law graduates into 501-plus firms: Norton Rose Fulbright matched a $235,000 first-year base effective 1 July 2026, as Above the Law reported on that date.
What do Michigan in-house counsel earn in 2026?
Full-time legal-department in-house counsel reported a $195,000 median on 2025 income in the State Bar of Michigan 2026 survey (n=286; 25th $138,732 / 75th $272,000). Counsel sitting outside the legal department sat at a $149,511 median (n=70). The 2023 survey wave, covering 2022 income, put a single in-house-counsel row at a $165,000 median (n=244). Treat both as respondent medians, not W-2 censuses. The July 2025 State Bar census counted 3,324 active Michigan-resident lawyers in corporate counsel — 9.7 percent of 34,165 resident actives.
Why does a $195,000 posted salary fail to close an OEM legal seat?
It sits $40,000 below the $235,000 national first-year scale that took effect on 1 July 2026. University of Michigan Law’s Class of 2025 sent 187 graduates into 501-plus firms and only 36 into Michigan. A Dearborn general counsel posting the in-house median is bidding against that scale for labor, NHTSA, warranty and tax seats, not against the $130,520 OEWS statewide median. Sartori’s New York associate mandate telemetry recorded 12 automotive, products or labor files inside 33 closed searches over three years; 7 of those 12 ran past the 12-week band when the competing in-house bid sat on the survey median and the company would not reopen it.
What is attorney salary Detroit compared with the statewide median?
Detroit-Warren-Dearborn employed lawyers had a $134,980 median in the BLS OEWS May 2025 release, against $130,520 statewide. The Detroit 90th percentile was $246,420; Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood’s 90th was $308,190, the widest upper tail in the state table. Downtown Detroit private-practice hourly rates sat at a $555 median in the State Bar of Michigan 2026 survey (n=137) — fee data, not W-2 pay. Detroit is not among the 19 cities NALP published in its 2025 associate-salary survey; the Midwest-and-South median outside those 19 cities was $160,000 as of 1 January 2025.
How does Michigan classified attorney pay compare with in-house?
Attorney Staff-E hourly bands run $33.53 to $63.10 under the Civil Service Compensation Plan effective 1 October 2025; Attorney Specialist-2 runs $59.54–$81.94. Attorney Administrator-2 is a salary band of $137,864–$177,851. Those are the Assistant Attorney General desks that counsel the Michigan Public Service Commission, not the OEM Lead Counsel range. Michigan justices remain at $181,483 for 2025–26 because the legislature did not adopt the State Officers Compensation Commission raise. A classified hire is a different market; it does not set the number a Dearborn general counsel must post.
How should a general counsel price a 2026 Michigan legal hire?
Price the seat against the $235,000 national first-year scale, not against the $130,520 OEWS median. Name the competing offer in the brief — a Detroit national-platform office, a Chicago scale seat, or another OEM — before the first approach. Sartori has worked this associate line for more than 10 years and closed 33 New York associate searches over three years at a 93 percent completion rate, on a 6-to-12-week typical clock and a median 11 working days from offer to signature. The files that ran long were the ones posted at the in-house median with no authority to reopen.
State Bar survey, BLS wages, NALP, and the dockets behind the seat.
Wage percentiles come from the May 2025 OEWS release. In-house and private-practice income come from the State Bar surveys. The scale is an announcement. The OEM docket is a 10-K. Mandate telemetry is Sartori’s New York associate line.

OEWS figures are employer-survey wages for employed lawyers (SOC 23-1011), May 2025. State Bar income figures are self-reported 2025 gross income among full-time respondents, not W-2 wages and not a census. NALP is a law-firm office survey as of 1 January 2025 with a large-firm oversample; Detroit is not a published city breakout. The $235,000 first-year base is a matching announcement effective 1 July 2026, not a Michigan office scale. Classified bands are official rates effective 1 October 2025, not incumbent pay. Ford titles are a careers-category listing on 11 September 2026. Dykema percentages are an industry-respondent survey. Sartori interview, mapping and mandate figures are the New York associate book; they are not a Michigan W-2 sample.
Interview counts, closed searches, counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window come from the research program described on our research page and from the method note on methodology.
