Lawyer Salary in North Carolina 2026

May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics put the statewide lawyer median at $127,710. This page is the dated table by metro, seniority and firm type — for the lawyer who earns the figure and the general counsel who pays it.

The published number is a coverage statement, not a hiring budget.

The published lawyer salary North Carolina cell for 2026 is the May 2025 OEWS median of $127,710. It covers wage-and-salary employees. It does not tell a Charlotte general counsel what to put on a Counsel offer letter.

Lens 01 · The coverage rule The published median counts wage employees, not licensed lawyers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics FAQ states that OEWS does not include the self-employed, or owners and partners in unincorporated firms. A 2026 “lawyer salary” search that treats the OEWS median as a census of the bar is reading the wrong instrument. Wage employees only.

Sartori maps roughly 4,000 lawyers in Charlotte. That file records admission and employer. It does not split in-house from firm, because no public North Carolina register does. The metro table is below.

DOL/O*NET republished the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for SOC 23-1011. The metros do not share the statewide cell.

O*NET's North Carolina wage page, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, puts the United States lawyer median at $159,670, with a 10th percentile of $78,360 and a 90th of $351,600. North Carolina's statewide cell sits below that national median. Charlotte's metro cell does not. The 10th-to-90th for the state is on the scale below; the sortable table is the metro cut.

A chief legal officer in Charlotte and a head of legal in Jacksonville are not in the same wage market. Jacksonville's May 2025 OEWS median is $81,660 against Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia's $157,180. Durham-Chapel Hill's median is $132,790; Greensboro-High Point $126,960; Winston-Salem $126,250; Asheville $105,480. The statewide blend hides those gaps. The Charlotte row is the NC-SC MSA, not a Mecklenburg-only figure.

Those three coverage counts in the band above are not a single population. The North Carolina State Bar's 2025 Annual Report also says the Bar regulates over 34,000 licensed lawyers. The ABA cell is 2.45 resident lawyers per 1,000 against a resident population of 10,835,491. Projections Central takes 2024 employment to 20,730 in 2034, a 5 percent ten-year rise, with 730 projected annual openings. The employment series can include the self-employed. The wage survey cannot. A page that collapses those figures into one “North Carolina lawyer” number is inventing a census nobody published.

The ABA Journal reported on 9 December 2025 that the United States had 1.37 million lawyers in 2025, up from 1.35 million in 2024, the first overall increase since 2020, and 5.6 percent growth over ten years from 1.3 million in 2015. North Carolina is named among jurisdictions with more than 15 percent growth in resident active lawyers over those ten years. The 2025 state headcount is not on that page. The 2024 resident-active cell remains the last ABA figure this article can cite.

National employment on the O*NET occupation profile, updated 2026, is 864,800 employees in 2024, with projected growth of 3 to 4 percent through 2034 and 31,500 projected openings. That is the national demand series. It does not split North Carolina in-house from firm. Neither does the May 2023 national Legal Services industry table (NAICS 541100), which counted 445,110 lawyers in legal services at an annual mean of $182,020 — a 2023 industry cell, not a 2025 North Carolina in-house share, and not used as one here.

The published median is a coverage statement, not a hiring budget.

03 The company desk

Who actually writes the in-house number.

Charlotte and the Triangle staff general-counsel desks at bank, utility, retail, industrial and life-sciences headquarters. The OEWS median does not split those desks out. The ACC chapters count members, not seats.

Public-interest wageCompany payroll

  1. Public desk Prosecution, indigent defense, civil legal aid, Utilities Commission staff. Appropriations and IOLTA, not lockstep.
  2. Firm office National and regional offices selling into the same buyers. A thin slice reports a $225,000 first-year to NALP.
  3. Company legal department The general counsel's own payroll. National in-house bands, HQ sector, and whether the seat must appear in court.

Inside that Charlotte interview cohort, 71 of 94 respondents who sat in corporate legal departments over a 24-month window told Sartori their company prices Counsel seats against a national in-house survey, not against the North Carolina OEWS median. A general counsel at a Charlotte commercial bank put it more bluntly: the statewide cell is a labor-market statistic, and the offer letter is a retention document.

The Association of Corporate Counsel's Charlotte chapter describes over 800 members in “the dynamic corporate and financial center of North Carolina,” serving in-house counsel in the Charlotte metropolitan area and in Winston-Salem, Hickory, Asheville and Boone. The Research Triangle Area chapter describes more than 700 members in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and eastern North Carolina. Those are professional-association memberships. They are the only dated in-house counts published for this geography. They are not a legal-department census, and they are not OEWS employment.

Axios Raleigh, on 3 June 2026, counted 12 North Carolina companies on the 2026 Fortune 500, up from 11 in 2025. The Triangle names on that list are IQVIA Holdings (Durham, rank 274), First Citizens Bank (Raleigh, 309) and Advance Auto Parts (Raleigh, 461), with Labcorp in Burlington at 326 and Martin Marietta in Raleigh at 532. The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, on 4 June 2026, reprinted the Charlotte-region roster: Bank of America (20, commercial banks, $191.57 billion), Lowe's (52, retail, $86.29 billion), Honeywell International (116), Nucor (142), Duke Energy (145, $31.79 billion), Truist (150), Sonic Automotive (297) and Ingersoll Rand (494). The Alliance copy puts 19 Fortune 1000 companies in a 14-county Carolinas region. Those are the employers a chief legal officer is hiring against. None of those filings publishes a legal-department headcount.

Bank of America's Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025 lists principal executive offices at Bank of America Corporate Center, 100 N. Tryon Street, Charlotte, and approximately 213,000 employees, 77 percent of them in the United States. Compensation and benefits expense was $42.3 billion in 2025. The filing does not publish legal-department size or general-counsel cash. It is the scale of the buyer, not the size of the desk.

U.S. in-house median base by title, ACC/Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, data effective 1 March 2025, 1,632 respondents. National self-reported sample. Not a North Carolina cut.

ACC / Empsight, 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey Executive Summary; ACC newsroom 16 September 2025.

The same ACC executive summary, effective 1 March 2025, puts attorney total cash at a $160,000 median, senior attorney at $228,000, associate general counsel at $294,000, deputy general counsel at $368,000, and the CLO total-cash figure ACC framed at $410,000. Attorneys with prior law-firm experience posted a median base 16 percent higher and total cash 18 percent higher. Large-company CLOs at $5 billion-plus revenue earn 44 percent more base and 173 percent more total target compensation than CLOs at companies under $1 billion. That last pair is why a Bank of America-scale desk and a mid-market industrial desk in the same metro do not share an offer letter.

Charlotte's in-house work sits in banks, utilities, retail and industrials.

  • Utility dual-grade seats. Duke Energy posted Counsel/Senior Counsel, Technology & Growth, in Charlotte on 27 August 2026, reporting to a Deputy General Counsel, covering intellectual property, technology procurement, commercial contracts and enterprise transactions. Senior Counsel requires a license in North Carolina or another state where the company operates, and at least three years' practice.
  • Retail still wants the NC card. Belk posted Director, Legal Counsel — Litigation & Employment, at the Charlotte corporate office on 2 September 2026, hybrid, three days onsite. The posting requires a North Carolina license in good standing and annual CLE. That is the exception to the Pledger in-house exception, not the rule, and it is a credential the OEWS median does not price.
  • Firm offices sell into those desks. McGuireWoods describes its Charlotte office as banking and finance, commercial litigation, corporate and securities, energy, government investigations and “the largest litigation practice in Charlotte,” in the second-largest U.S. banking center after New York. Alston & Bird keeps a Charlotte office at 1120 South Tryon Street. Regional shops — Parker Poe across eight offices, Robinson Bradshaw at 280-plus professionals — sit in the same buyer market.

The Triangle's in-house work sits in clinical research, regional banking and the regulator.

  • Raleigh's Fortune names differ. First Citizens, headquartered in Raleigh, will retire the Silicon Valley Bank brand in the fourth quarter of 2026 and reported more than $225 billion in assets on 23 April 2026. IQVIA sits in Durham. A Triangle general counsel is hiring into clinical, bank-regulatory and vendor-contract work, not into Charlotte's bank-utility-retail stack.
  • The regulator is in Raleigh. The North Carolina Utilities Commission sits at the Dobbs Building, 430 North Salisbury Street. September 2026 hearings on Duke Energy Progress fuel, CPRE, CEPS and DSM/EE riders are on the Commission's calendar. McGuireWoods Raleigh describes regulatory lawyers who represent the Southeast's largest electric and natural gas public utilities, plus public finance, patents, healthcare disputes and private wealth.
  • Triangle HQ firms feed the same buyers. Smith Anderson, headquartered in Raleigh, describes more than 170 attorneys and nearly half joining from national and international firms. Brooks Pierce, Greensboro-rooted, lists 123 attorneys. The lockstep first-year is thinner in this metro than in Charlotte; the NALP office shares sit in the seniority section below.
04 Seniority and firm type

Attorney salary Charlotte is a lockstep slice, a class year, or an OEWS cell.

The lawyer who earns the figure is not in one market. First-year lockstep, a UNC class-year median and a Jacksonville OEWS cell are three different paychecks.

NALP's June 2025 Bulletin+ report, on salaries as of 1 January 2025, puts the overall median first-year associate base at $200,000. Firms of 250 or fewer lawyers: $150,000. Firms of more than 700 lawyers: $215,000. About 87 percent of 437 responding offices were in firms of more than 250 lawyers. $225,000 was the most frequently reported first-year salary, at 32.0 percent of offices overall and 44.7 percent of firms with 701 or more lawyers. The South and West regional median was $205,000.

The city cut is the one a North Carolina general counsel actually competes with. Table 3 of that NALP survey: 50.0 percent of eight Charlotte offices reporting a first-year salary sat at $225,000. Raleigh/Durham: 11.1 percent of nine offices. Cities with at least half of offices at $225,000 included Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC, Charlotte and Dallas. Of 115 offices reporting $225,000, Charlotte accounted for 3.5 percent of those salaries, the same share as Austin, Denver and Miami/West Palm Beach. Raleigh/Durham is not in that concentration table. Sample sizes are eight and nine. They describe a large-firm slice, not the OEWS median, and not a company payroll.

That $225,000 floor is already a vintage behind the 2026 lockstep. Above the Law's associate compensation scorecard, updated 5 June 2026, records Milbank's 2 June 2026 move to a $235,000 first-year and a $455,000 eighth-year, presumed effective 1 July 2026, matched by McDermott, Quinn Emanuel, Sullivan & Cromwell, Norton Rose Fulbright and others. The national ladder lives on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026. It is not a North Carolina OEWS figure. Half of eight Charlotte offices had not even reached the prior $225,000 floor on 1 January 2025. A company that treats $235,000 as “the Charlotte rate” is matching a slice that most of the metro does not pay.

Of the 38 respondents at bank, utility or retail headquarters inside those 94 in-house interviews over the same 24 months, a Charlotte head of legal described the first-year lockstep as the number that walks into the room even when the seat will never match it. The company that has not decided whether it is buying a lockstep refugee or a career in-house lawyer writes two offers and wonders why both bounce.

UNC School of Law Class of 2024, NALP summary prepared July 2025. Private-practice medians by firm size, and in-state versus out-of-state. A class-year pipeline, not sitting-counsel pay.

University of North Carolina School of Law Class of 2024 Summary Report (NALP table, July 2025).

UNC's Class of 2024 NALP summary, prepared July 2025, covers 210 reported graduates, 205 employed. Private practice took 120 jobs (58.5 percent). Firms of 501 or more lawyers took 52 of those 120 (43.3 percent), with a median of $215,000 among 46 salaries. Firms of 1 to 10: 21 jobs, median $83,750. The private-practice full-time long-term median is $170,000 (25th $100,000 / 75th $215,000). In-state jobs were 115 of 205 (56.1 percent) at an in-state median of $87,000; the out-of-state median was $110,000. Business jobs — the in-house-adjacent bucket — were 12, with a bar-admission-required median of $89,000 on six salaries. The South Atlantic region took 164 of 205 jobs (80.0 percent). A general counsel hiring a UNC graduate onto a Charlotte payroll is not hiring off the $215,000 large-firm median unless the person actually sat in that 501-plus band.

Duke Law's Class of 2025 page records 230 graduates, 229 employed (99.6 percent) ten months out. Law firms took 181, of whom 163 joined firms of 500 or more lawyers. Business and industry: zero. The private-practice median (50th percentile, long-term, full-time) is $225,000. Judicial clerkships: $77,926. Government and public interest: $79,900. Geographic share of the employed class in North Carolina: 10.5 percent on the Class of 2025 map line. First-time bar pass: 98.23 percent in 2025. Durham produces a national-scale private-practice median and exports most of it. A Triangle chief legal officer who expects Duke to stock the in-house bench is reading a class that took no business-and-industry jobs.

NALP's Class of 2025 National Summary, tables prepared August 2026, status date 16 March 2026, covers 36,206 graduates, 32,619 employed (92.8 percent of known). Private practice: 19,869 jobs (60.9 percent), median $155,000. Firms of 501 or more: 6,017 salaries, 25th/median/75th all $225,000. Business jobs: 2,180 (6.7 percent), median $100,000. The South Atlantic region, which includes North Carolina, took 7,164 jobs (22.0 percent) at a median of $90,000. That regional class-year median sits closer to UNC's in-state $87,000 than to Charlotte lockstep, and it is the pipeline figure a company hiring first-year counsel actually meets outside the eight-office sample.

A Charlotte general counsel who matches lockstep is buying a different instrument from the OEWS cell.
On the lockstep slice
05 The 2026 rewrite

Statute and capital events moved desks. They did not rewrite the OEWS table.

IOLTA is frozen through June 2026. The carbon statute sent utility work into 2026 hearings. A September PFAS deal and a June Honeywell spin-off changed who needs counsel. None of that is a new statewide median.

S.L. 2025-70, the 2025 Public Safety Act, Section 25, effective 9 July 2025, provides that IOLTA interest “shall not be encumbered or expended for the purpose of awarding grants or for any purpose other than administrative costs” from 1 July 2025 through 30 June 2026. NC IOLTA announced on 26 August 2025 that the 2026 funding cycle would not open. The State Bar's 2025 Annual Report records $12.2 million awarded in 2025 to 42 organizations, including 24 legal-services providers. Legal Aid of North Carolina, present in all 100 counties, handled over 25,000 cases in 2025. That is volume, not a headcount, and it is the desk sitting at the low end of the OEWS 10th percentile. A 2026 replacement hire at that desk depends on non-IOLTA money.

Criminal defense is on the opposite 2026 trajectory. S.L. 2026-41 funds the Administrative Office of the Courts at $874,651,040 in requirements ($853,710,981 net appropriation) and Indigent Defense Services at $236,861,595 in requirements ($192,197,315 net). The Department of Justice sits at $126,129,920 in requirements. Assistant District Attorney seats run through the Office of State Human Resources and local DA offices; the Conference of District Attorneys' comity program lets a DA house a bar applicant in a vacant ADA seat for up to twelve weeks after the application is filed. Civil legal aid and public defense are different payrolls. The OEWS median blends them with bank counsel and lockstep associates.

S.L. 2025-78, the Power Bill Reduction Act, was vetoed on 2 July 2025 and overridden on 29 July 2025 (Senate 30–18, House 74–46). It eliminates the 70 percent-by-2030 carbon-reduction target from 2005 levels; 2050 carbon neutrality remains. It allows construction-work-in-progress recovery in base rates for baseload plants outside a general rate case, with annual prudence review. The North Carolina Utilities Commission's 1 November 2024 order in Docket E-100 Sub 190 had already accepted a Carbon Plan / integrated resource plan under G.S. 62-110.9 — coal retirements of more than 8,000 MW by 2036, 3,460 MW of controllable solar by 2031, 1,200 MW of onshore wind, 2,720 MW of gas combined cycle by 2031. Duke was to file a new proposal by 1 September 2025; Commission expert hearings sit in 2026. That is Charlotte in-house regulatory work and Raleigh firm regulatory work. It is not a reason to move the OEWS median.

On 10 September 2026, NCDEQ and the Attorney General announced a $590 million PFAS deal, $455 million of it cash to the State and 11 local governments over 10 to 15 years, plus a $135 million DuPont/Corteva reserve behind the 2019 consent order. Chemours had already spent nearly $1.2 billion under that order; 27,500 wells sampled; filtration offered to about 10,500 families. The 2019 civil penalty was $12 million. Reuters the same day put Chemours at about 50 percent of the cost, with payments beginning within 30 days. The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority case remains live. Environmental litigators at NCDOJ and DEQ, and county attorneys in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, New Hanover, Robeson and Sampson, are on that docket. They are not first-year lockstep.

Honeywell completed the Aerospace Technologies spin-off on 29 June 2026 in Charlotte: Honeywell Aerospace (Nasdaq HONA) separated; Honeywell Technologies remains; Solstice Advanced Materials was already separate. The remaining company cited more than 50,000 employees. That is a company-wide figure, not a Charlotte lawyer count. It is a 2026 reason a Charlotte in-house corporate and securities bench is busy. First Citizens, from Raleigh on 23 April 2026, will rebrand SVB as First Citizens Innovation Banking and First Citizens Fund Banking in the fourth quarter of 2026. Trademark, vendor contracts and bank-regulatory work follow the brand. They do not reset attorney salary Charlotte as an OEWS cell.

Two other 2025–26 statutes change government and campus desks without touching private-practice lockstep. S.L. 2025-79, the Personal Privacy Protection Act, chaptered 29 July 2025 after a veto override, effective 1 December 2025, bars public agencies from compelling or disclosing donor and member lists of 501(c) nonprofits, with a $2,500 civil minimum (treble if intentional). S.L. 2026-21, becoming law on 24 June 2026 notwithstanding veto, bars UNC System and community-college DEI offices and requires annual certification, including reductions in force. Campus general counsel picked up employment work; DEI-office lawyer seats came off. Senate Bill 730, the Ratepayer Protection Act on 100 MW data-center siting, had been referred to Senate Rules on 8 June 2026 after House passage. It was not session law as of 8 June 2026 and is not treated as one here.

The North Carolina Business Court, in the NCAOC report dated 1 February 2026, recorded 179 new cases in calendar 2025 (175 on a consolidated-as-one basis), up from 138 in 2024 and 101 in 2023. Pending at year-end 2025: 233 (207 consolidated-as-one). Closed: 156. New 2025 cases by filing county: Mecklenburg 44, Wake 32, Buncombe 13, Guilford 11, Durham 8, New Hanover 7. Notices of designation most often listed corporations, partnerships and LLCs (86), then intellectual property (32), trade secrets (30), contracts over $1 million (13), controversies over $5 million (13) and securities (10). Six active Business Court judges as of 31 December 2025, chambers in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and Winston-Salem. FY 2024–25 expenditures: $3,476,781. That docket is the commercial-litigation demand a Charlotte or Raleigh firm office staffs. It is not a mass associate class, and it is not an in-house headcount.

06 The search

How a Charlotte company actually prices the seat.

Sartori has worked the Charlotte market for five years. Over the trailing three years the associate line closed 20 searches, 93 percent completed, on a typical 6-to-12-week timeline.

Published cellSigned offer

  1. Start from the desk Company payroll, firm office, or public body. The OEWS cell is a blend of all three. It is a check, not a band.
  2. Read the instrument the candidate is leaving Lockstep first-year, regional-firm class year, or another in-house band. Walk-away is set there, not at the statewide median.
  3. Write the offer the GC can defend National in-house survey, HQ sector, court-appearance gate, and whether a counter-offer is likely. Then wait out the signature window.

Of 20 closed Charlotte associate searches over three years, 11 were in-house Counsel or senior-associate-grade seats at companies and 9 were law-firm associate seats. Seven of those 11 in-house mandates needed a revised band after the first offer, because the company had priced the seat to the Charlotte OEWS median rather than to the lockstep or the national in-house survey the shortlist was holding. The completion rate on the 20 files was still 93 percent. The first-offer hit rate on the in-house subset was not. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: we still close the search; we often close it on the second number.

Counter-offers arrived in 39 percent of those 20 processes. The median window from offer to signature was 12 working days. Sartori's quarterly survey, running since 2019, is the global instrument behind those city reads. Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles sit in the global map. The Charlotte file is a metro cut of that work, not a second census.

The credential gate is part of the price. The State Bar Authorized Practice Committee's January 2026 guidelines, Question 7, rest on State v. Pledger, 257 N.C. 634 (1962): an unlicensed attorney employed by the corporation may advise it and prepare documents for it, may not serve the public except as in G.S. 84-5(b), and may not appear in court unless admitted pro hac vice. Public use of “corporate counsel” must disclose that the person is not licensed in North Carolina. ACC's multi-jurisdictional practice tracker, updated 6 June 2025, confirms North Carolina does not require in-house registration. The Duke Energy posting asked for U.S. licensure and reciprocity eligibility. The Belk posting required an NC card. A general counsel who has not decided whether the seat will appear in Business Court is not ready to write the license line, let alone the salary line.

Comity at the Board of Law Examiners, Rule .0502 effective 7 February 2025, requires active and substantial practice in 4 of the preceding 6 years — house counsel counts — a $2,000 fee, and an MPRE. The candidate must not have failed the North Carolina exam within five years. From 15 November 2027, general applicants also complete a North Carolina State-Specific Component on Decedents' Estates and Trusts. That gate does not move 2026 associate pay. It will start to shape which out-of-state laterals a 2027 in-house hire can put in court.

Three recent seats, anonymized

A regulated electric utility in Charlotte needed Counsel or Senior Counsel for technology procurement and commercial contracts, reporting to a Deputy General Counsel, dual-grade, reciprocity-eligible. The company opened on a band built from the Charlotte OEWS median. The shortlist was leaving offices that had been at $225,000 on 1 January 2025. We closed in 9 weeks on a revised Senior Counsel number. It was one of the 11 in-house files, and one of the seven that needed the second band.

A regional retailer in Charlotte needed a Director-level litigation and employment lawyer inside the general counsel's office, hybrid, three days onsite, North Carolina license mandatory because the seat would handle demand letters and court-adjacent work. We closed in 11 weeks. The credential, not the OEWS cell, was the constraint. The salary debate was an ACC senior-attorney conversation, not a lockstep match.

A Charlotte office of a national firm needed a mid-level banking associate. The incumbent counter-offered. Counter-offers are 39 percent of this line. We closed in 7 weeks. The company reader on this page is not hiring that seat; the lawyer earning the figure is. The same metro, the same year, a different instrument.

07 How to read an offer

Four instruments, four populations, one metro.

A North Carolina general counsel who puts all four numbers on the same slide without labeling the population is not comparing pay. A lawyer who does the same is not reading an offer.

Four published instruments a North Carolina general counsel actually uses when a Counsel offer is on the table. Each covers a different population and a different year.
Instrument What it covers Vintage Use it for
OEWS SOC 23-1011 Wage-and-salary employees, all industries, by metro May 2025 Labor-market blend; not an offer letter
NALP office survey First-year base at reporting large-firm offices (Charlotte n=8; Raleigh/Durham n=9) 1 January 2025 Walk-away for candidates leaving those rooms
ACC / Empsight Self-reported U.S. in-house titles; no North Carolina cut 1 March 2025 Company payroll by seniority
Class-year NALP tables UNC 2024 and Duke 2025 graduates; South Atlantic class of 2025 2024 / 2025 Pipeline, not sitting general counsel

An unlicensed in-house hire under Pledger is cheaper on the bar-dues line and unusable in Business Court. A Belk-style seat that must appear in court is an NC-licensed hire whether or not the OEWS cell moved. The North Carolina State Bar counted 1,192 Board Certified Specialists in 15 specialties in the 2025 Annual Report; that is a consumer-identification program, not a hiring license, and not a salary scale.

For the national in-house bands by title, see in-house counsel salary 2026. For the sitting chief legal officer, see general counsel salary 2026. For private practice versus company payroll as a structure, see the private practice versus in-house salary guide. This page owns the North Carolina table. It does not restate those national ladders.

OEWS cells are wage-and-salary employees. Bar counts are licensed or resident-active lawyers. ACC figures are U.S. self-reported in-house titles, or chapter membership. NALP office shares are first-year bases at the reporting offices (Charlotte n=8, Raleigh/Durham n=9). Sartori closed-search counts sit inside 20 Charlotte associate-line files over three years.

Lawyer salary in North Carolina: common questions

What is the lawyer salary North Carolina figure for 2026?

The 2026 published figure is $127,710, the May 2025 OEWS statewide median for lawyers (SOC 23-1011), republished by DOL/O*NET. It is a wage-and-salary employee median. It excludes the self-employed and owners or partners in unincorporated firms. A general counsel writing a Charlotte or Raleigh offer is not looking at that cell; the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia median in the same table is $157,180 and the Raleigh-Cary median is $131,920.

How much is attorney salary Charlotte in the 2026 published table?

The May 2025 OEWS median for lawyers in Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia is $157,180. The 10th percentile is $61,830 and the 90th is $371,170. That MSA includes South Carolina counties. It is not a Mecklenburg-only figure, and it is not an in-house band.

How much does in-house counsel earn in North Carolina?

No North Carolina in-house census was published. The ACC/Empsight 2025 U.S. survey, effective 1 March 2025, put the attorney median base at $148,000 and total cash at $160,000 among 1,632 respondents. Treat that as the national band a general counsel prices against, not a Charlotte headcount.

Do Charlotte companies have to match BigLaw first-year pay?

No. On 1 January 2025, 50.0 percent of eight Charlotte offices reporting a first-year base to NALP sat at $225,000; 11.1 percent of nine Raleigh/Durham offices did. That is a large-firm office sample, not the OEWS median, and not what most company desks pay.

Can a company hire in-house counsel in North Carolina without an NC law license?

Yes. ACC's tracker, updated 6 June 2025, records no North Carolina in-house registration requirement. The State Bar's January 2026 guidelines rest on State v. Pledger (1962): an unlicensed employee may advise the corporation. Court appearances still need an NC license or pro hac vice. Belk's 2 September 2026 Charlotte posting still required an NC license in good standing.

How long does a Charlotte associate or in-house counsel search take?

Sartori's Charlotte associate-line searches run 6 to 12 weeks, with a 93 percent completion rate on 20 closed files over three years. Median offer-to-signature is 12 working days. Counter-offers arrived in 39 percent of those processes.
