Lawyer Salary in Perth 2026
The dated 2026 Perth paycheck, in AUD and USD, is a Western Australian Legal Grade — not a Sydney lockstep. This page is for the lawyer who earns that figure and the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who has to put it on an offer.
Pick the 2026 Perth cell. Both readers need the same instrument.
A general counsel matching lawyer salary Perth in 2026 is matching a Legal Grade, not a Sydney lockstep: L1LG.1 at AUD 108,278 and L7LG.1 at AUD 287,976 from 13 June 2026. Sartori maps about 6,500 lawyers on the Australian associate desk that covers these Perth mandates.
Legal Grade L1LG.1 from 13 June 2026: AUD 108,278, or USD 77,657 at the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 11 September 2026 rate of 0.7172. Entry cell for WA government lawyers in four Perth offices. CSA Agreement 2024 ↗

Schedule 4 of the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024 is the seniority-banded 2026 table. Click a column to re-rank. USD is arithmetic on the Reserve Bank print, not a second survey.
The Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission registered the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024 on 23 December 2024 (2024 WAIRC 01069). Schedule 4 sets annual salaries for WA government lawyers, within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2022 (WA), employed in the State Solicitor’s Office, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Office of the Public Trustee, or the Parliamentary Counsel’s Office. The third increase takes effect on and from 13 June 2026. These are scheduled annual salaries exclusive of superannuation as a separate entitlement. They are not private-practice packages.
The Cook Government’s media statement of 30 September 2024 records the CSA offer as salary increases of 5 percent in the first year, 4 percent in 2025 and 3.5 percent in 2026 — a 12.5 percent rise over three years for more than 33,000 public servants. Clause 10.5 of the registered agreement dates that third step to 13 June 2026. A general counsel who reads the 3.5 percent as Perth legal-market relativity to New South Wales is reading a wages-policy path, not a lockstep match.

Other WA government lawyers outside those four offices are paid Specified Calling salaries in Schedule 3, not Legal Grade. Figures: CSA Agreement 2024 and Reserve Bank of Australia.
Above Legal Grade sit the Senior Legal Offices determined by the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal. Determination No. 1 of 2025, signed on 20 June 2025, applied a general 3.5 percent increase. Table 12 indicative ranges: Band 1 AUD 470,137–541,319 (USD 337,182–388,234); Band 2 AUD 409,032–470,137 (USD 293,358–337,182); Band 3 AUD 334,760–409,032 (USD 240,090–293,358); Band 4 AUD 301,392–334,760 (USD 216,158–240,090). Those are statutory determinations for named offices, not survey medians.

Four Perth payers. None of them is a Sydney partnership pool.
The lawyer who earns the 2026 figure, and the company that pays it, sit in a certificate mix the New South Wales survey does not describe.
WA P&LState payroll
- WA-independent firms Principals and employees on a Perth P&L. Mining, resources, government work and private clients — not a national lockstep.
- National Perth desks Resources, energy, infrastructure and M&A offices on St Georges Terrace. Hire off a national brand; still sit in a fused WA market.
- In-house resources and GTEs Group general counsel and specialist counsel inside miners, energy companies and electricity trading enterprises. Company payroll, often dual-hatted with secretariat.
- Government legal estate Legal Grade at the named Perth offices; Specified Calling elsewhere; Commonwealth, Legal Aid and native-title representative bodies beside them.
The Legal Practice Board of Western Australia’s Annual Report 2024-25, tabled on 11 February 2026, is the seat map. Of 8,435 Australian practicing certificates issued in 2024-25 — a 4 percent increase on 2023-24 — certificate categories were employee of a law practice 4,261; principal of a law practice 1,866; corporate legal practitioner 1,078; government legal practitioner 893; barrister only 322; volunteer or pro bono 15. The earner is most often an employee of a law practice. The payer, in volume, is a WA law practice, then a resources or energy company, then the State.
That mix is why a Sydney lockstep does not price Perth. The 2024 National Profile of Solicitors, compiled by Urbis for the Law Society of New South Wales on behalf of the Conference of Law Societies and dated 13 June 2025, counts 7,698 solicitors in Western Australia in 2024, 8 percent of 97,500 nationally, up 14 percent from 6,737 in 2022. Mean age of WA solicitors: 43. Among private firms, WA (with South Australia and New South Wales) is 83 percent sole practices. Large practices of 21 or more principals concentrate in New South Wales (34) and Victoria (30) of 79 nationally. Reading Perth associate pay off a Sydney 50-plus-principal table imports a firm size that is scarce here.
WA-independent private practice is a first-class Perth buyer. Lavan, independent again from April 2006, publishes 23 partners and more than 200 staff, with mining and resources, finance, government, real estate, agribusiness and private clients on the homepages. Jackson McDonald sits as a Perth-based independent. National and international firms keep Perth offices as resources, energy, infrastructure and M&A desks: Allens at Mia Yellagonga Tower 2; MinterEllison at One The Esplanade; DLA Piper Australia at 240 St Georges Terrace. Named here as landscape, never as case studies.
The public-sector volume employer that publishes both headcount and the 2026 Legal Grade is the State Solicitor’s Office: 200 lawyers at 30 June 2025, 289.13 FTE, 8,544 new and active matters, 74 government agencies assisted, seven law graduates in 2024-25 and seven expected in 2025-26. Practice labels on the Office’s 13 July 2026 page — Advice, Policy and Public Law; Public and General Litigation; Civil Litigation; Commercial; Native Title and State Lands; Counsel — are the workstreams a company general counsel is competing with, or briefing against. Legal Aid WA describes around 480 lawyers and support staff across 9 offices. Francis Burt Chambers, established 1962, has more than 140 members; the independent Bar is a fused-profession seat, small relative to solicitors, and real.
In-house seats that actually sit in Perth are group general counsel, managing counsel and specialist counsel inside energy, iron ore, nickel, electricity government trading enterprises and native-title representative bodies. Woodside Energy is headquartered in Perth. Fortescue’s registered office and global headquarters are in Perth. BHP keeps iron-ore and nickel head offices at 125 St Georges Terrace. Western Power and Synergy publish general counsel seats on their leadership pages. Those are corporate practicing certificates, often dual-hatted with company secretariat, sitting next to projects, procurement, native title and energy-transition work — not a Sydney bank-and-private-equity corridor.
The earner needs a Perth instrument, not a national self-report dressed as a lockstep.
- Tenure is not a Perth ladder. The College of Law 2025 Australian Legal Salary Survey, covering more than 1,100 legal professionals and reported by the Law Society Journal on 8 August 2025, puts average base at AUD 109,353 (USD 78,428), average bonus at AUD 15,247, under-five-years base at AUD 89,500, six-to-ten-years at AUD 122,671, and more than 15 years above AUD 161,030. That is a national education-provider survey, junior-heavy, closer to the occupation median than to a Sydney CBD tail.
- Corporate self-reports pay more. The same College of Law survey puts corporate organizations at the highest average base, AUD 151,989 (USD 109,007), and boutique firms and sole practitioners at the lowest, AUD 97,253 (USD 69,750), with a law-firm gender pay gap of 16 percent. Useful as a national shape. Useless as a Perth offer letter.
- Admission is Uniform Law. A Perth practicing certificate requires WA as principal place of practice. Supervised legal practice runs 18 months or two years depending on practical legal training. The Legal Practice Board received 439 Form 5 applications to remove the condition in 2024-25 and approved 381. That gate sits under every employee-solicitor paycheck in the table above.
The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal is competing with four payrolls, not one lockstep.
- State payroll is published. Legal Grade and SAT office salaries are the only 2026 Perth cells a company can read without a recruiter grid. A miner that poaches from the State Solicitor’s Office is bidding against AUD 503,706 for the State Solicitor office and AUD 429,265 for a Deputy State Solicitor — SAT figures, not Legal Grade.
- Resources cash funds the in-house desk. The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration’s 2024-25 Statistics Digest records resources-sector sales of AUD 220 billion (about USD 158 billion at 0.7172) and royalty receipts of AUD 10,607.64 million. Iron ore still dominates. Lithium and nickel do not. That split, not a Sydney partnership cycle, is what a Perth head of legal is budgeting against.
- Aid and Bar are other buyers. Legal Aid’s roughly 480 lawyers and support staff, and Francis Burt’s 140-plus members, are Perth seats. They do not reset the offer a listed producer has to write for a native-title or energy-regulatory counsel.
The New South Wales mean is a comparator. It is not a WA scale.
Every published Australian income series that is not Legal Grade fails a Perth test: wrong city, wrong population, or wrong year.
Wrong openerPerth instrument
- Occupation median A national weekly statistic for solicitors. Useful as a floor in a briefing pack. Fatal as an offer.
- NSW certificate survey Voluntary gross income, Sydney-weighted, mixed full-time and part-time, including principals. A tail Perth does not have.
- WA Legal Grade The only seniority-banded Perth table in a primary instrument. Public, dated, and limited to the named offices — which is exactly why it can be cited.
Jobs and Skills Australia’s ANZSCO 2713 profile, drawing on the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours for May 2025, reports median full-time solicitor earnings of AUD 2,070 a week (USD 1,485 at 0.7172) and median hourly earnings of AUD 56. National employment: 106,100 (ABS Labour Force Survey, Detailed, February 2026, JSA trend); Western Australia’s share of solicitor employment 8.0 percent. A 52-week product of AUD 2,070 is AUD 107,640 (USD 77,199) — derived arithmetic, not a figure ABS publishes, and not a Perth or Sydney lockstep. The ABS EEH May 2025 release of 23 January 2026 prints occupation-major-group figures; Professionals averaged AUD 2,049.60 a week in total cash earnings for all employees. There is no solicitor line on those public tables.
The Law Society of New South Wales 2025 Annual Profile is the series a hurried head of HR actually pastes into a Perth brief. Average gross annual income for FY2023-24 was AUD 184,980 (USD 132,668), from 15,464 solicitors responding to the 2025-26 Practising Certificate Survey (38 percent response). Half of NSW solicitors worked in the Sydney CBD (49 percent); 33 percent in suburban Sydney. Corporate legal: 61 percent reported incomes over AUD 150,000 and 45 percent over AUD 200,000, versus 40 percent and 27 percent in private practice and 37 percent and 11 percent in government. In practices with 50 or more principals, 35 percent of respondents earned more than AUD 250,000, versus 9 percent in practices with one to four principals. Using that mean as a WA pay table imports a Sydney CBD and large-firm tail the WA certificate mix does not have.
Across that same Perth interview cohort, 68 of 91 Perth general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal over a 24-month window told Sartori they had at least once opened a resources or energy legal requisition on a Sydney private-practice table and then had to re-price. A group general counsel at a Perth-headquartered ASX energy major, inside that same window, said matching a Sydney fifth-year table “buys a resignation in twelve months,” because the work is native title and State agreements, not CBD banking. That is the buyer’s problem this page is for.
JSA weekly median, annualized x52 (derived)
AUD 2,070 x 52 = AUD 107,640. National occupation arithmetic, May 2025, not a Perth cell.
Jobs and Skills Australia / ABS EEH May 2025 ↗Two stocks that look like Perth headcount are not interchangeable. The Legal Practice Board issued 8,435 Australian practicing certificates in 2024-25; the 2024 National Profile counts 7,698 WA solicitors as at the 2024 census. The Board figure includes barristers in a fused profession and intra-year grants. The Law Society of Western Australia’s 2024/25 membership is 5,119 — a membership count, not a certificate census. Uniform Law, which commenced in Western Australia on 1 July 2022, put 83,360 practitioners in NSW, Victoria and WA at 30 June 2025, a 2.2 percent increase since 1 July 2024, in the Legal Services Council Annual Report 2024-2025. Mobility between those three jurisdictions does not make a Sydney income survey a Perth scale.
Legal Grade is a public salary. It is not a miner general counsel package.
The 2026 docket rewrites the work. It does not print a new lockstep.
Native title compensation, mandatory merger control, EPBC reform and a split commodity cycle change what a Perth seat does. They do not replace Legal Grade with a Sydney table.
The Federal Court’s decision in Yindjibarndi Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC v State of Western Australia (No 2) [2026] FCA 585, reported by Allens on 20 May 2026, is the third Native Title Act compensation decision after Timber Creek and McArthur River. Total about AUD 150.1 million, of which AUD 150 million cultural loss and about AUD 100,000 economic loss plus compound interest; economic loss assessed on freehold value, not project profits; s 125A of the Mining Act 1978 (WA) held valid so the tenement holder, not the State, pays. ABC News reported on 26 August 2026 that the State of Western Australia appealed, and that the claim group also appealed quantum. 2026-27 is an appeals window, not a closed file. Senior native-title litigators, in-house mining disputes counsel and State Solicitor Native Title and State Lands seats price off that docket — above Legal Grade, and nowhere near a graduate award.
The Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 was restored on 15 November 2023 (assent 24 October 2023) and remained current as at the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage page of 23 April 2026, with the government stating it has no intention of drafting new Aboriginal heritage legislation. Native title parties now have a right of review of section 18 decisions in the State Administrative Tribunal. Commercial and government section 18 fees under the Aboriginal Heritage (Fees) Regulations 2023 are AUD 256 plus AUD 5,096 per identified place. That is standing 2026 work for heritage, native-title and SAT practitioners in private practice, in-house resources, the State Solicitor’s Office and native-title representative bodies.
Mandatory ACCC merger notification began on 1 January 2026, with asset and voting-power thresholds from 1 April 2026. The large-merged-firm test is combined Australian revenue of at least AUD 200 million and (target Australian revenue of at least AUD 50 million or global transaction value of at least AUD 250 million). Informal review ended 31 December 2025. Treasury’s 2024-25 foreign-investment appendix records 169 mineral exploration and development proposals approved, value AUD 31.5 billion, after AUD 54.9 billion in 2023-24. In the quarter to 30 June 2025, minerals were the largest target sector at AUD 19.3 billion of AUD 49.3 billion commercial approvals. The Takeovers Panel received 35 applications in 2024-25; Westgold Resources Limited [2024] ATP 15 was a WA gold matter on deal-protection language. Perth resources M&A now runs Panel plus ACCC plus FIRB. Competition counsel on those files is a 5-to-15-year seat, not a Legal Grade graduate.
Environment Protection Reform Bills passed on 28 November 2025. The National Environmental Protection Agency commenced on 1 July 2026; remaining reforms run on or before 1 December 2026. Fossil-fuel projects are excluded from the fast-track assessment pathway. On 21 April 2026 the Federal Environment Minister and the WA Premier signed a memorandum of understanding in Perth for a new assessment bilateral, then an approvals bilateral. Conventional LNG stays on the slower pathway. That is a Perth workload, not a Sydney technology-M&A story.
Mining on-site employment was 134,009 FTE in 2024-25. Lithium FTE 9,337; nickel FTE 4,698, down more than 5,700. Lithium sales of AUD 4.3 billion sat well below AUD 8.5 billion in 2023-24 and AUD 21.5 billion in 2022-23; lithium royalties fell 64.89 percent. The Lithium Industry Support Program runs fee waivers from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026. Royalty, State-agreement and offtake work stays on iron ore and gold; lithium and nickel desks shift from project-build toward restructuring and government-assistance contracting. That is a substitution of work type, not a salary figure, and not a reason to paste a Sydney lockstep onto a care-and-maintenance brief.
Energy regulation has its own 2026 staircase. The Electricity Industry Amendment (Distributed Energy Resources) Act 2024, stage one on 6 February 2025, renamed the Wholesale Electricity Market Rules as the Electricity System and Market Rules. Tranche 9 Rules gazetted on 23 December 2025 commence across 2026. Western Power and Synergy general counsel seats compete for that specialist talent against private practice — still not against a Cravath class year. Separately, the Attorney General wrote in Brief (December 2025, republished 18 May 2026) of a shortage of criminal lawyers in regional and remote WA. The Department of Justice Annual Report 2024-2025 puts Supreme Court criminal median time to trial at 58 weeks against a 39-week target. Those are volume junior-to-mid seats at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and Legal Aid, not mining general counsel pay. On the civil side, the Opening of the Legal Year 2026, as reported on 5 February 2026, recorded 1,780 additional civil hearings in the General Division in 2025, a 20.9 percent increase on the prior year, and 9,670 probate and letters-of-administration applications finalized. A general counsel who only budgets mining M&A is not looking at the whole Perth docket.
How a company actually prices a Perth lawyer in 2026.
Sartori's Perth associate telemetry is a 20-file book over three years. The files that ran long opened on the wrong published number.
Copied numberSigned offer
- Do not open on Sydney A New South Wales survey mean or a Sydney class-year table is a briefing error, not a starting band. The shortlist will tell you so after the clock has already slipped.
- Floor on Legal Grade Use the June industrial-agreement schedule as the public floor the candidate can verify. Mid-to-senior in-house work lives on the upper Legal Grade rungs, not the entry cell.
- Pay the workstream Native title, heritage, State agreements, ACCC-plus-FIRB M&A and energy-market rules are the premium. Commodity cycle tells you which of those is live.
Of 20 closed associate searches over three years on this Perth desk, 7 were in-house matching files at miners, energy companies or electricity government trading enterprises; 9 were private-practice seats (5 at WA-independent firms, 4 at national Perth offices); 4 were government or Legal Grade-adjacent. Four of those 7 in-house matching files ran past twelve weeks. Each of the four opened on a Sydney-imported number. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: when the brief is wrong, we are slow, and the 6-to-12-week clock does not save a company that started on AUD 184,980.
Inside the same 20-file book, counter-offer incidence is 34 percent and median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days, with a 93 percent completion rate. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, read on this line over the trailing 18 months, recorded native title or Aboriginal heritage as a required workstream on 11 of 16 company processes that reached a mandate. The workstream is the premium. The city name on a Sydney table is not.
Of 77 general counsel and heads of legal sitting in resources, energy or electricity trading enterprises — a cut of those 91 hiring-side interviews over 24 months — 54 named Legal Grade 5 and 6 (AUD 221,389 to AUD 273,991 from 13 June 2026) as the public-sector ceiling they lose mid-level counsel to. A head of legal at a State-owned electricity network operator, in that cut, said Legal Grade L6 is the number their own counsel quote back when a miner calls. Of 84 private-practice employees and salaried partners in the same cohort, over the same 24 months, 61 said their firm has no published class-year lockstep and prices off the WA independent P&L or the Perth office budget. That is what our own interviews cannot produce: a Milbank-style Perth private-practice table. We do not invent one.
Three anonymized composites from this desk, numbers inside the envelope. A Perth-headquartered iron-ore producer asked for a managing counsel, native title and heritage, and opened the brief on the New South Wales corporate income tail. The search sat inside the in-house matching cut of those 20 files; it moved only after the band was rebuilt against Legal Grade 6 and a resources premium. A WA-independent full-service firm needed a mid-level resources associate on State-agreement work; the file closed in eight weeks on a Perth P&L number, not a national lockstep. A Legal Grade 4-to-5 seat adjacent to State Solicitor commercial work filled in six weeks because both sides could read the same industrial agreement. No real company, firm or candidate is named in those files.
The service view of the associate book sits on our associate recruiting page. Companies filling the matching in-house seat should start from a confidential brief, not from a Sydney survey mean. The structure of cash versus hours versus title is the private-practice versus in-house guide; this page stops at the Perth cells.
The associate's question and the general counsel's, answered on the same cells.
Each answer opens with a number. The rest of the paragraph is the matching rule for Perth, not for Sydney.
What is lawyer salary Perth in 2026?
From 13 June 2026, WA Legal Grade runs from AUD 108,278 to AUD 287,976 (USD 77,657 to USD 206,536) for four Perth government offices. That schedule, in the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024, covers the State Solicitor’s Office, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Office of the Public Trustee and the Parliamentary Counsel’s Office. USD is AUD times the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 11 September 2026 rate of 0.7172. It is not a private-practice lockstep, and it is not the New South Wales certificate-survey mean.
Can a general counsel read Perth off the New South Wales certificate-survey average?
No. The Law Society of New South Wales 2025 Annual Profile mean of AUD 184,980 is FY2023-24 voluntary survey income, and 49 percent of those solicitors worked in the Sydney CBD. Western Australia’s private-practice shape is 83 percent sole practices among private firms in the 2024 National Profile. Importing that mean imports a Sydney large-firm tail the WA certificate mix does not have.
What should a company budget for in-house counsel in Perth in 2026?
Open on Legal Grade mid-to-senior bands, then add the resources workstream, rather than on a Sydney lockstep. Legal Grade 5 starts at AUD 221,389 from 13 June 2026; Legal Grade 6 starts at AUD 244,359. Those are public-sector cells a Perth head of legal can read without a recruiter grid. The premium sits in native title, heritage and energy regulation, not in a Sydney class year.
Is the Legal Services Award a 2026 Perth solicitor salary?
No. The Fair Work Ombudsman Pay Guide puts a law graduate at AUD 1,291.80 a week from 1 July 2026, and the award text excludes a lawyer already admitted. Admitted Perth solicitors are generally award-free. The 2025 Graduate Outcomes Survey median of AUD 80,000 is a national study-area figure four to six months after completion, not a Perth private-practice graduate lockstep.
How long does a Perth associate or matching in-house search take?
Sartori’s Perth associate desk typically fills in 6 to 12 weeks, with a median of 12 working days from offer to acceptance and a 93 percent completion rate on 20 closed searches over three years. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 34 percent. A brief that opens on a Sydney-imported number is the usual reason an in-house matching file runs long.
What sits above Legal Grade on the Perth public payroll?
The Salaries and Allowances Tribunal’s 2025 determination puts Band 1 Senior Legal Offices at AUD 470,137 to AUD 541,319 after a 3.5 percent increase. The State Solicitor and Parliamentary Counsel offices each sit at AUD 503,706. Those are statutory office salaries, not survey medians, and they are not a miner general counsel package.
Legal Grade, SAT offices, the certificate census, and the Perth research program.
The 2026 cells come from the CSA Agreement and the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal. USD comes from the Reserve Bank of Australia. Headcount comes from the Legal Practice Board. Matching behavior comes from Sartori's Perth associate program.

Sartori figures come from the Perth interview cohort on the associate line, mandate telemetry on 20 closed searches, and quarterly surveys running since 2019. Public cells come from the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024, SAT Determination No. 1 of 2025, the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia, Jobs and Skills Australia, the Law Society of New South Wales (comparator only), the College of Law, Fair Work, QILT, the State Solicitor's Office, DMPE, Treasury/FIRB, the ACCC, the Federal Court reporting on [2026] FCA 585, and the Reserve Bank of Australia. USD salary columns are AUD times 0.7172 on 11 September 2026. The JSA weekly median is annualized only where labeled derived.
Compensation data is general information, not financial, career or legal advice. Actual pay varies by employer, seniority, workstream, hours and FX. Sartori maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly surveys since 2019. Legal Grade is a public industrial-agreement schedule for four offices. The 8,435 certificates are a regulator year. The 7,698 solicitors are a 2024 census. The 5,119 Law Society members are a membership file. They are not the same stock, and none of them is a Sydney lockstep.

Matching a Perth lawyer to a 2026 cell?
Whether you are a general counsel writing the offer or a lawyer reading one, we price the seat off Legal Grade and the resources workstream, not off a Sydney survey mean. Confidential, no obligation.
