Lawyer salary in Scotland 2026: the Scots-qualified cell.
The dated 2026 table is not the England-and-Wales newly qualified cell at the same UK firms. It is a Scots-qualified figure in sterling and dollars, for the solicitor who earns it and the general counsel who pays it.
What lawyer salary Scotland actually prices in 2026
A general counsel who opens an Edinburgh or Glasgow requisition on the England-and-Wales newly qualified cell is budgeting the wrong country. CMS's own 2026 careers pages still print Scotland NQ at £60,000 against London NQ at £110,000. Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London; that file makes a Scotland-desk shortlist tractable.
Upon qualification at Pinsent Masons' Scotland offices: a £69,000 base as of August 2026, $93,357 at the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot. Applicants need a Scots LLB or accelerated Scots LLB, and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice before the contract. Pinsent Masons ↗

Open on the number. The Scottish qualification cell and the England-and-Wales NQ cell are not interchangeable, even when the letterhead is the same.
The Scottish cell is not the England-and-Wales NQ cell at the same firm. CMS still prints Scotland newly qualified at £60,000 on its Scotland training-contract page, against London newly qualified at £110,000 on the parallel England, Wales and Northern Ireland page — both in 2026. At the Bank of England spot on 10 September 2026 (sterling 0.7391 per US dollar, implied £1 = $1.3530), that is $81,180 against $148,830. Pinsent Masons, on a Scotland careers page that states salary rates as of August 2026, publishes upon-qualification pay at £69,000 ($93,357), with first-year and second-year trainees at £35,500 and £38,500. The June 2026 recommended trainee cell replaced first-year £24,840 and second-year £28,850, in force from 1 June 2025, uplifts of £1,110 and £1,300. The same CMS pair puts Bristol NQ at £70,000 and Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool NQ at £62,000, so the Scottish cell sits below the firm’s English regional cells as well as below London.
A general counsel who budgets the London number for an Edinburgh seat has not yet opened the search. The cash the solicitor takes home, and the cash the company puts through payroll, is the Scots-qualified cell: a recommended trainee rate from the Law Society of Scotland, a published NQ at a UK/international firm’s Glasgow or Edinburgh office, or a civil-service C grade. Independent Scottish-headquartered firms are the other private-practice payroll, and they are missing from the pounds column on purpose.

Recommended trainee rates are discretionary; the registration floor is the real Living Wage, not the recommendation. COPFS scale F matches Scottish Government C1. The COPFS page header still says the table reflects salaries from 1 January 2025 while the F/G/H maxima match the 1 April 2026 C bands. Vintage 2024 rows are announcements, not a 2026 census.
Real Living Wage, 35-hour annualization
£13.45 × 35 × 52 = £24,479. The Law Society will not register a traineeship below the real Living Wage. UK rate for 2025–26, announced 22 October 2025.
Living Wage Foundation; Law Society 35-hour basis ↗The Scottish cell is not the England-and-Wales NQ cell at the same firm.
The credential that unlocks the cell is not the SQE.
A solicitor salary in Glasgow or Edinburgh is earned on a Scots LLB, a Diploma, a two-year traineeship and a practicing certificate. The London NQ product at the same UK firms runs on a different exam.
A degree in Scots lawA title the company can put on payroll
- PEAT 1 — the Diploma The Diploma in Professional Legal Practice is mandatory. Six Scottish universities provide it. A valid Diploma is required for an Entrance Certificate. There is no guarantee of a traineeship after it.
- PEAT 2 — the traineeship Two years under a Scottish-qualified solicitor. Pinsent Masons and CMS sponsor the Diploma before the contract on their Scotland pages. COPFS splits the two years between a specialist team and a local court.
- The practicing certificate Admission to the Roll, then a current practicing certificate to use the title solicitor. The 2025–26 levy is a published number of its own, and it is not salary.
Pinsent Masons’ Scotland training-contract page is explicit about the gate: applicants must hold or be completing an LLB in Scots Law or an accelerated LLB in Scots Law, and must complete the Diploma before the training contract. Skilled-worker visa sponsorship is stated as London-only because of the salary threshold, so an overseas candidate reading the Scotland NQ cell is not reading a visa cell. CMS Scotland eligibility is an LLB accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, with the Diploma sponsored before the contract; offices listed are Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Addleshaw Goddard lists Scotland training-contract locations as Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, a September start, four six-month seats, and an optional client or non-UK secondment. The buyer of the trainee is a UK or international LLP. The seat is still a Scots-qualified office.
An England-and-Wales solicitor who wants to earn the Scottish cell, rather than sit on a dual-qualified energy or employment seat that will take an E&W certificate, requalifies through the Qualified Lawyers Assessment. The Law Society’s requalification pages set a Certificate of Eligibility at £615, enrolment at £120 per exam, and eleven papers: legal system and method; public law; obligations; criminal law; evidence; procedure; conveyancing; trusts and succession; European law and institutions; professional conduct; the Accounts Rules. From the November 2026 diet the exams are in person in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and possibly Glasgow, two diets a year. Three attempts per paper; first exam within 12 months of the Certificate; admission to the Roll within five years of passing. The SQE is the England-and-Wales path. It is not this cell.
Among new traineeships in the 2024–25 practice year, 73 percent were based in Edinburgh or Glasgow, 33 percent sat with 1–5 partner firms, 28 percent with firms of 31 partners or more, and 70 percent of new trainees were women, the Law Society figures printed by Scottish Legal News on 27 November 2025 show. That mix is why lawyer salary Glasgow and lawyer salary Edinburgh queries resolve to one table, and why a 2–5 partner firm and a 31-partner independent are both on the demand side of the same credential.
What a solicitor actually took home, as opposed to what a firm printed for NQ, last had a profession-wide survey in 2023. The Law Society’s Profile of the Profession, fieldwork 28 March to 11 May 2023, 3,138 complete responses, found that 51 percent of those giving a full-time or FTE salary excluding bonuses earned up to £60,000, down from 66 percent in 2018; the most-cited band was £45,001–£60,000 at 22 percent; 27 percent earned £80,001 or above; 17 percent over £100,000; 8 percent more than £150,000. The median category for female respondents was £50,001–£60,000; for male respondents £70,001–£80,000; the implied category-midpoint gender gap among qualified solicitors was 27 percent. Among those giving salary, 32 percent said the organization does not offer bonuses. That is a 2023 self-reported distribution, not a 2026 NQ census, and it is the last profession-wide earnings cut on a page.
| Path | What it is | What it unlocks | 2026 note |

A Faculty of Advocates calling is a different buyer again: a self-employed bar, typically after solicitor training plus devilling, not the Pinsent or CMS NQ cell. Solicitor-advocates hold extended rights of audience on a practicing certificate. Neither is this table’s spine.
The person who writes the check is often not a law firm.
Around two thirds of in-house solicitors in Scotland work in the public and third sectors. The remaining third sit in commerce and industry. A chief legal officer paying this cell is buying Scots-law capacity, not a London lockstep.
Public and third-sector in-house
COPFS, central and local government, NHS, Police Scotland, charities. The employer is the client. The cash band is a civil-service or Agenda for Change grade, not a firm NQ cell.
Commerce and industry in-house
The remaining third sit in financial services, energy, media and construction. A general counsel in Edinburgh or Aberdeen is paying for a Scots-law file the company cannot send to London counsel without a dual-qualified seat or a QLA.
UK and international firms, Scotland offices
Pinsent Masons, CMS, Addleshaw Goddard and their peers hire trainees on a Scots LLB and a Diploma, then publish a Scotland NQ cell that is not their London cell. The general counsel who seconded into that office is still buying Scots qualification.
Independent Scottish full-service firms
Brodies, Burness Paull, Shepherd and Wedderburn, Harper Macleod and their peers are the other private-practice payroll. They had not printed an NQ number on the careers pages. A monitoring officer still pays them on public frameworks.
The Law Society of Scotland’s Guide for in-house lawyers, accessed in 2026, states that the number of in-house lawyers in Scotland continues to grow, that around two thirds work in public and third sectors — Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, central and local government, public bodies such as the NHS or Police Scotland, charities — and that the remaining third sit in commerce and industry: financial services, energy, media, construction. In-house solicitors remain on the same practice rules, CPD and Scottish Legal Complaints Commission jurisdiction as private practice. A current practicing certificate is required to use “solicitor” in the title under the Solicitors (Scotland) Act 1980 s.31. On 11 June 2026 the Society launched a Taylor Mackenzie survey of in-house solicitors, open 12 June to 6 July 2026; results were not on the page. A 2017/18 cut, vintage and not a 2026 census, put 12 percent of registered traineeships in-house against around 30 percent of the profession working in-house. A company hiring the Edinburgh seat, rather than pricing the cell, starts from in-house legal recruiters in Edinburgh.
Profile of the Profession 2023, among those 3,138 complete responses, put private practice of 16 or more partners at 30 percent of respondents, 2–5 partners at 18 percent, sole practitioners at 6 percent, local government at 6 percent, central government at 4 percent, COPFS at 2 percent, other public body at 6 percent, commercial at 6 percent, financial services at 4 percent, professional and regulatory bodies at 2 percent, charity at 1 percent and higher education at 1 percent. The “other sectors” rows sum to about 34 percent of respondents — in-house and public legal desks together, not a regulator headcount.
A head of legal at Scotland’s largest local-authority legal section — four teams: Litigation, Licensing, Corporate, Property; an employer of some 27,000 people serving more than 600,000 citizens — told us the C-grade cash band is what finance will approve, and a private-practice NQ who expects the Pinsent cell is not a candidate the authority can land without a grade exception it does not have. The council’s own legal-jobs page, modified 13 April 2026, lists the live title Solicitor on the corporate-law team and names the work: procurement, construction, governance, ICT, sustainability, planning, FOI and data protection, social care, City Deal infrastructure, a residual-waste plant, Clyde Metro. The gate on the linked vacancy is registration with the Law Society of Scotland and the ability to practice law in Scotland.
The in-house and public desks that actually post a Scots-qualified solicitor title.
- NHS Central Legal Office sits at Gyle Square, Edinburgh, inside Public Services Delivery Scotland from 1 April 2026, in four departments: Litigation, Employment, Commercial Contracts, Commercial Property. A Trainee Solicitor posting of 12 March 2026 offered two starts in September 2026 and four in 2027, 24-month PEAT 2, salary aligned to the recommended rate on Agenda for Change band 3. The employment-solicitor posting of 20 August 2026 accepted current Law Society of Scotland or England and Wales registration — one of the few seats that will take an E&W certificate.
- COPFS traineeships (page dated 8 September 2026) run two years: first six months in a specialist legal team, primarily Edinburgh; final 18 months in a local court office anywhere in Scotland. Seat labels on the careers page include summary or sheriff-and-jury prosecutions, High Court casework, domestic abuse, sexual offences, serious crime, the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, fatalities investigation, proceeds of crime. Gates: LLB in Scots Law, Diploma, Entrance Certificate. The qualified title is Procurator Fiscal Depute.
- Government Legal Service for Scotland frames a legal traineeship as public-law work across member and associate offices. Taster-day eligibility, event dated 24 November 2025, includes a Scots Law LLB, a dual-qualifying Scots-and-English LLB, an accelerated LLB, and the Diploma. Central-government solicitor roles sit on the C grades.
- Energy in-house is the commerce-side buyer the guide names. SSEN Transmission listed solicitor and senior solicitor seats in construction and commercial, with a Scotland and/or England-and-Wales qualification gate, bases split across Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness. ScottishPower advertised a Glasgow solicitor for strategic projects and transactions asking for membership of a UK law society (Scotland, England and Wales, or Northern Ireland) and three or more years of corporate work. The cash bands on those energy listings are not used here: the SSEN employer URL returned 404 when accessed.
The private-practice payroll a general counsel still funds, either as a panel or as the office that trains the NQ.
- UK and international LLPs with Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow offices publish the only 2026 NQ numbers on this page. CMS states over 500 people in Scotland and 65 or more partners, 45 percent of them women, and runs an In-house Essentials program plus a Strategic Secondment Unit — firm payroll, client seat. That secondment is often how a chief legal officer first tests a Scots-qualified hire before opening a requisition.
- Independent Scottish full-service firms are the other private buyer. Brodies, year ended 30 April 2026, printed fee income of £138.8 million, operating profit £54.8 million, profit per equity partner £930,000, a 5 percent firm-wide bonus, and headcount of 944. Burness Paull, year ended 31 March 2026, printed £105.2 million turnover, a 10 percent all-employee bonus, about 700 people including 92 partners, and a trainee intake held at 24 a year. Shepherd and Wedderburn, year ended 30 April 2026, printed £83.1 million and a 4 percent firm-wide bonus. None of those three careers pages printed an NQ base.
- Public frameworks are how a monitoring officer pays the independents without growing the in-house desk. Harper Macleod, year to 31 March 2025, printed turnover of £43.5 million and states it is appointed to all six lots on the Glasgow City Council, City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Government legal-services frameworks, and that it advises central government and 28 of 32 local authorities. That is the general counsel (or the monitoring officer) paying a panel firm rather than a C-grade salary.
A general counsel who budgets the London number for an Edinburgh seat has not yet opened the search.
Three clocks England-and-Wales NQ tables do not capture.
The solicitor who earns the figure, and the general counsel who pays it, are buying the same statutes. The hiring lag differs by seat: entity-regulation rules, a summary-crime mix shift, and an employment-rights first wave.
A statute on the booksA seat a company has to staff
- Entity-regulation rules The Law Society must write rules for authorizing and regulating legal businesses, on a statutory clock of up to three years from the 1 July 2026 commencement. Professional-regulation and firm-governance seats, not an NQ volume spike.
- Summary-crime mix National Summary Case Management finished its sheriff-court rollout in January 2026. Trial diets fell; the work moved to first calling. COPFS and summary defense change mix, not necessarily headcount.
- Employment-rights first wave The UK Employment Rights Act 2025’s April 2026 wave hits every Scottish employer of size. In-house employment seats and the private-practice desks that support them are live now, with a second wave into 2027.
The Regulation of Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 27 June 2025. It keeps a multi-regulator model: the Law Society of Scotland remains the principal solicitor regulator, the Lord President retains ultimate responsibility, and the Act creates offences of pretending to be a lawyer, a regulated legal-services provider, or a member of Faculty. The Commencement No. 1 Regulations 2026 (SSI 2026/96) appointed 5 March 2026 and 1 July 2026. Section 48, commenced for remaining purposes on 1 July 2026, requires the Law Society to make entity-regulation rules within a time agreed with the Lord President, no longer than three years. Section 89, from 5 March 2026, removes practicing restrictions for law centers, citizens-advice bodies and charities employing solicitors — a 2026 gate for third-sector in-house posts that previously hit reserved-work limits. The WS Society’s 2025 explainer records that the 2010 Act alternative-business-structure system is still awaiting operationalization. Do not treat 2026 Scottish NQ hiring as an ABS-capitalization event.
Criminal desks are already live. The Victims, Witnesses, and Justice Reform (Scotland) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 30 October 2025. Abolition of the not-proven verdict and the new two-thirds jury majority (at least ten of fifteen jurors) took effect from 1 January 2026. The WS Society’s July 2026 reading records that Part 7, the Sexual Offences Court, had not yet entered into force as of June 2026, and that no Victims and Witnesses Commissioner had been appointed. Lord Justice General C.J.M. Sutherland’s Criminal Courts Practice Note No 1 of 2025, issued 10 January 2025, extended Summary Case Management to all sheriff courts. The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service May 2026 national rollout report records the January 2025–January 2026 rollout: as at January 2026, scheduled summary trials were 27 percent below the pre-pandemic baseline, at 10,191 scheduled trials; trial adjournments fell from 40 percent to 27 percent (non-domestic) and 40 percent to 30 percent (domestic). About 1,350 High Court solemn cases were registered in 2025–26, up 26 percent; about 95,000 civil cases were registered. The mix shift is earlier engagement, not a larger criminal headcount.
Employment seats sit on a UK statute that still hits Scottish workplaces. The Employment Rights Act 2025 (2025 c. 36) received Royal Assent on 18 December 2025. BTO Solicitors, 7 May 2026, records the first wave from 6 April 2026: collective-consultation protective award doubled to 180 days’ pay; whistleblowing extended to sexual-harassment disclosures; unpaid parental leave and statutory paternity leave as day-one rights; Statutory Sick Pay from day one and without the lower-earnings limit. Equality action plans for employers of 250 or more are voluntary from April 2026 and mandatory from April 2027 (March 2027 for public-authority employers). For Women Scotland Ltd v Scottish Ministers, [2025] UKSC 16, judgment 16 April 2025, is a UK-wide Equality Act holding with a Scottish public-boards origin: employment, public-law and public-sector equality seats inside Scottish Government Legal Directorate, local-authority employment, NHS and university in-house, and the private-practice employment desks that advise them, through 2026 policy rewrites.
Property, planning and energy seats sit on later or overlapping clocks. The Housing (Scotland) Act 2025 requires each local authority to report on private-residential rents; the first reporting period ends 31 May 2027; a permitted rate is the lower of CPI plus one percentage point and 6 percent. National Planning Framework 4 has been part of the statutory development plan since 13 February 2023. Crown Estate Scotland, on 14 July 2026, reported that 16 of 20 original ScotWind projects had updated Supply Chain Development Statement Outlooks, with average predicted spend in Scotland of £1.6 billion per project, totaling £25.5 billion across those 16; the Marine Directorate was progressing 14 applications as of 1 June 2026; one project, West of Orkney, held a Marine Licence and s.36 consent. That is 2026 consenting and supply-chain contracting, not operations — construction, planning, marine-licensing and real-estate seats in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and in-house at developers and transmission owners. The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75 percent on 29 July 2026, a 6–3 vote, which is cyclical pressure on leveraged M&A and commercial real estate in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and support for restructuring desks. Grangemouth refining ceased on 29 April 2025, with about 430 jobs lost from a 2,000-person complex: employment, restructuring and energy-transition files, not a permanent refining in-house team.
What a published NQ cell leaves off the requisition.
Comparing a Scottish seat to a London NQ on base alone is the mistake that stalls the search. Two of eight Scotland-desk files on our book did exactly that.
Of 33 closed associate searches on Sartori’s London desk over the trailing three years, 8 were Scotland-desk seats — Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen, Scots-qualified or dual-qualified. Those 8 ran a median of 11 weeks from brief to accepted offer, against 7 weeks for the 25 England-and-Wales associate files in the same book. The typical London associate timeline is 6 to 12 weeks; the Scotland median sat inside it. Two of those eight stalled past 12 weeks because the hiring company had budgeted an England-and-Wales NQ cell and had to return to a compensation committee when the Scots-qualified offer came in well below the London cell the finance pack had been built on. That stall is on us as much as on the client: the brief should have caught the wrong country before the pack went to finance. Counters arrived on 3 of the 8. Completion on the desk as a whole is 93 percent.
In the same cohort, 118 respondents had held a Scots-qualified or Scotland-desk seat over a 24-month window. Of those 118, 81 said the first number a hiring manager or HR pack put on a Scottish NQ or junior solicitor requisition was an England-and-Wales NQ cell, and that the pack then had to be rewritten. A general counsel at a vertically integrated energy group with a north-of-Scotland transmission book told us, in that window, that the first pack HR sent for a construction solicitor had the London NQ cell in it, and that the team lost three weeks taking it out. The mapping file records admission and employer. It does not print a Scotland-only NQ scale, because the independents do not publish one, and no public register does.
Two composites from that book, anonymized, numbers inside the envelope. First: a vertically integrated energy group filling a construction-and-commercial solicitor for a north-of-Scotland transmission build. Dual qualification, Scotland and/or England and Wales, on the brief. One of the eight Scotland-desk files. Eleven weeks to offer. A counter in week ten, one of the three. Signed on day 11. The complication was the HR pack, not the shortlist. Second: a national public-service legal function in Edinburgh filling an employment solicitor on a published Agenda for Change band. The credential gate accepted Law Society of Scotland or England and Wales registration. Closed in eight weeks. No counter. The band sat inside the C1-adjacent public grades, and the company did not try to match Pinsent.
Scottish Legal Aid Board cash spend for 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025 was £169 million, of which £126 million was paid to solicitors and solicitor-advocates. That is fund cash, not take-home, and it is why a legal-aid or summary-crime seat cannot be read off the Pinsent cell. The UK all-employee median in the figures above is not a Scotland-solicitor cell; even CMS Scotland NQ sits well above it.
Write the Scots-qualified cell into the pack before the shortlist.
Sartori has worked the London associate desk that covers this market for more than 10 years. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6 to 12 week timeline.
For the solicitor who earns the figure: read the Scotland careers page, not the London one, at the same firm. Confirm whether the seat needs reserved Scots-law work (PEAT or QLA) or will take an England-and-Wales certificate on a group construction or employment file. Do not price yourself on a career-community reprint of a cell the firm has not printed. The recommended trainee rate from 1 June 2026 is £25,950 / £30,150; 57 percent of trainees were paid above the then-recommended rates in the Law Society’s prior-year administrative data, and 49 percent of all traineeships paid at least £1,500 more. Upon qualification, the published 2026 range at UK/international Scotland offices is the CMS-to-Pinsent band in the table, not the London lockstep.
For the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who pays it: put the Scots-qualified cell in the finance pack in week zero. Decide in-house C-grade or Agenda for Change versus a panel firm before writing the brief. If the file is standing — a named senior official, a continuing Scots-law volume, a transmission build, a local-authority corporate team — the seat belongs on payroll. If the file is episodic, Harper Macleod’s framework claim is the existence proof that a panel still covers it. Either way, do not open on £110,000 because that is the number the London office of the same firm pays an SQE NQ.
We map the London file that makes a Scotland-desk shortlist possible, and we run associate search on that desk. A company that wants the seat filled should start with in-house counsel recruiting when the lawyer will sit on the company payroll, or with associate recruiting when the hire is a firm-side NQ the general counsel is funding through a panel or a secondment. The salary benchmark hub sits next to this page; the private-practice versus in-house salary guide is the wider comparison this table does not try to be.
Lawyer salary in Scotland: questions from both sides of the figure
What is the lawyer salary Scotland figure for 2026?
There is no single cell: Pinsent Masons published Scotland qualification at £69,000 as of August 2026; CMS still prints Scotland NQ at £60,000. Those are Scots-qualified bases at UK/international firms, not the England-and-Wales NQ rate at the same names. A Scottish Government C1 solicitor is paid £62,111 to £77,439 from 1 April 2026. Independent Scottish firms had not published an NQ cell on the careers pages opened for this article. USD figures on this page use the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot of £1 = $1.3530.
What does a newly qualified solicitor earn in Glasgow or Edinburgh in 2026?
Published 2026 NQ bases at UK/international firms run from £60,000 at CMS Scotland to £69,000 at Pinsent Masons. Solicitor salary Glasgow and solicitor salary Edinburgh sit on that same Scots-qualified table, not on two city locksteps. October 2024 announcements put Burges Salmon Edinburgh NQ at £68,000, Addleshaw Goddard Scotland at £61,000 and Dentons Scotland at £65,000 — dated then, not a 2026 census. Brodies, Burness Paull and Shepherd and Wedderburn had not printed the number.
What does the Scottish Government pay in-house solicitors from April 2026?
Qualified solicitor roles sit at grade C: C1 runs £62,111 to £77,439 from 1 April 2026. There is no separate solicitor scale. C2 is £80,172 to £92,533; C3 £92,827 to £94,083. COPFS scale F is aligned to C1. A freedom-of-information note records a 37-hour week reducing to 35 from 1 October 2024, and an employer pension contribution from 28 percent. The C1 floor sits above CMS Scotland NQ on the same year's published pages.
Can an England-and-Wales solicitor take a reserved Scots-law seat without requalifying?
Not for reserved Scottish solicitor work: requalification is the Qualified Lawyers Assessment, 11 papers, in person from the November 2026 diet. Some energy construction seats and the NHS Central Legal Office employment solicitor posting accept an England-and-Wales certificate on that one file. A practicing certificate is still required to use the title solicitor. The SQE unlocks the London NQ cell at the same UK firms; it does not unlock reserved Scots-law work.
How long does a Scotland-desk associate search take?
Sartori's London associate desk, which covers Scotland, runs a typical 6 to 12 week timeline at a 93 percent completion rate. Of 33 closed associate searches over three years, 8 were Scotland-desk seats and those 8 ran a median of 11 weeks. Two of those 8 stalled past 12 weeks because the company had budgeted an England-and-Wales NQ cell. Median offer-to-acceptance on the desk is 12 working days.
Should a company hire this seat in-house or keep Scots-law work on a panel?
Bring it in when the file is standing; Harper Macleod states it holds all six lots on three public frameworks. Panel it while the work is episodic. The firm also states it advises 28 of 32 local authorities. A general counsel who has not decided which of those two chairs the file is not yet briefing a search.
Regulator cells, firm careers pages, civil-service grades and the statutes behind them.
Recommended trainee rates come from the Law Society of Scotland. NQ cells come from firm careers pages. In-house bands come from Scottish Government, COPFS and NHS employer pages. USD sits on a dated Bank of England spot.

USD conversions are arithmetic from the Bank of England daily spot of 10 September 2026 (sterling 0.7391 per USD 1, implied GBP 1 = USD 1.3530), not a second survey. Profile of the Profession 2023 is a self-reported sample, not a 2026 census. Legal 500 firm counts measure directory coverage, not vacancies. SLAB cash is fund spend, not take-home. SCTS volumes measure court throughput, not lawyer headcount. ScotWind supply-chain figures are developer Outlooks, not outturn. Vintage 2024 NQ announcements are labeled as such in the table.
Our own numbers — the interview reads, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page. Sartori has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. That page sets out the London associate desk and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure on this page.
