Lawyer salary in South Carolina 2026: last year's cell is a five-figure miss.

Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS data for May 2025 puts South Carolina's lawyer median at $120,310 against a U.S. median of $159,670. Pricing a 2026 Charleston or Columbia hire off last year's statewide cell is already a five-figure miss.

Last year's statewide cell is the wrong unit.

The dated lawyer salary South Carolina median is $120,310 as of May 2025, per Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS data republished by O*NET, and last year's cell is already a five-figure miss. Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, companies still priced Charleston and Columbia as one number. The table that actually prices this state splits by metro, seniority and who writes the check.

Lens 01 · Last year's cell The 2024 statewide midpoint already understates 2026 by about $16,000.

AmericaByNumbers, refreshing BLS 2025 data on 19 May 2026, reports a 15.5 percent rise in the South Carolina lawyer median versus 2024, which puts last year's midpoint near $104,160 against the current $120,310. A stale cell is a five-figure miss before benefits.

Those four lenses are why a single stale statewide number fails this state. The dated table a general counsel actually writes is in the next section. Every number is cited below.

The 2026 lawyer salary South Carolina table by metro

Employed-lawyer wages in this state are an OEWS distribution, not a lockstep. Charleston and Columbia do not share a median. Greenville's right tail sits above Charleston's, so a coastal-premium read of the 90th percentile is false.

O*NET OnLine, drawing the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program, reports South Carolina lawyers (SOC 23-1011) with a May 2025 median annual wage of $120,310 ($57.84 an hour). The same table puts the 10th percentile at $63,140, the 25th at $80,870, the 75th at $174,620, and the 90th at $301,140. The U.S. median on that table is $159,670, with a U.S. 10th of $78,360 and a U.S. 90th of $351,600. What it measures is establishment wage-and-salary employment. It does not measure partnership draws, equity, or self-employed solo receipts. The May 2025 estimates were published on 15 May 2026.

AmericaByNumbers, refreshing that BLS vintage on 19 May 2026, adds the cells the printed O*NET wage table does not carry: a South Carolina mean of $144,700, employment of about 7,890, a 36th-of-51 rank, and a 15.5 percent change versus 2024. WageDex, citing the same May 2025 OEWS release, matches the median, the mean, the employment count, and a 25 percent gap versus the national median. The $24,390 gap between the state mean and the state median is the right tail of high earners inside a blended occupation, not a class-year bonus.

Charleston-North Charleston carries a May 2025 median of $127,280 (10th $75,960; 25th $84,210; 75th $175,390; 90th $272,990). Columbia carries a median of $105,200 (10th $63,030; 25th $80,870; 75th $169,160; 90th $293,340). Greenville-Anderson-Greer carries a median of $124,970, with a 25th of $94,220, a 75th of $207,480 and a 90th of $341,840. Attorney salary Charleston is therefore not a coastal 90th-percentile story: Greenville’s right tail sits above it. A head of legal who treats Columbia as a Charleston satellite discount in name only is arguing with the table the Bureau actually published.

Neighbouring Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, a bi-state MSA, carries a May 2025 lawyer median of $157,180 on the same O*NET table. That cell belongs to the North Carolina page. It is named here only so a general counsel does not import it as a Charleston floor.

03 Two readers, one table

Who earns the figure, and who pays it

The South Carolina lawyer this page prices is not only a lockstep associate. Three buyers write checks in this state: in-state and national firms with Columbia, Charleston and Greenville seats; in-house departments at manufacturers, utilities and insurers; and public employers in the capital, the sixteen circuits, and four federal cities.

A lockstep associate seatA statewide payroll

  1. Columbia, Charleston and Greenville firms An Am Law 100 Columbia office, an Am Law 200 three-city platform, and a national labor-and-employment founding office in Greenville. They sell corporate, labor, construction and economic-development work to South Carolina employers. They are not a New York lockstep factory.
  2. In-house manufacturing and utility desks A plant counsel seat, a labor desk, an environmental and siting brief, a FILOT file. Rule 405 is the credential that lets a company staff that seat with a lawyer admitted elsewhere, if the principal office sits in South Carolina. This is the check a general counsel actually writes.
  3. Public law The Attorney General in Columbia, sixteen circuit solicitors, the Judicial Branch, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in four cities. Neither a Cravath-scale M&A seat nor a Charleston median.

The lawyer earning the figure is more often a regional-firm, in-house, or public lawyer than a lockstep first-year.

Two schools feed the three seats. The University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law in Columbia is the state’s only nonprofit law school. Charleston School of Law is a private ABA-accredited school with a Global Trade and Maritime Law LL.M. Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd’s 10 September 2026 associate class mixed both, and mixed clerkships: a U.S. magistrate judge in the District of South Carolina, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the South Carolina Supreme Court, and the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit. The seats those four hires filled were Greenville family law, Columbia corporate litigation, and Charleston construction litigation — the practice labels that actually hire, not a class-year ladder.

Credential gates are the Supreme Court of South Carolina’s. Rule 402, SCACR, is regular admission: an ABA-approved J.D. and the Uniform Bar Examination. Rule 405 is the in-house limited certificate: ABA J.D., admission in another state or the District of Columbia, employment in a business legal department that does not serve the public, most duties and principal office in South Carolina, a $400 non-refundable fee. Courtroom work beyond magistrate and authorized agency proceedings still requires a Rule 402 member as co-counsel. The certificate dies when employment ends. The Office of Bar Admissions stopped accepting paper Rule 405 filings on 1 May 2026. Rule 404 moved pro hac vice onto the portal from 3 September 2025. Rule 410 sets license fees at $215 if admitted fewer than three years and $300 otherwise. A 15 May 2025 Columbia ceremony swore in 177 new lawyers; that is a single-ceremony headcount, not annual admissions.

The general counsel paying the figure is buying a desk at a named South Carolina employer type, not a slogan called Biglaw.

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, an Am Law 100 firm ranked 60 on its homepage, puts approximately 115 attorneys and 230 support staff in Columbia and names corporate, litigation, intellectual property, government relations and e-discovery on that office page. Chambers USA 2026 ranks the firm Band 1 for Corporate/M&A in South Carolina. Maynard Nexsen, more than 600 attorneys nationwide, lists more than 50 attorneys and staff in Charleston and posted, on 10 June 2026, a labor-and-employment associate with three to six years of experience open in Charleston, Columbia or Greenville — the same three seats the OEWS table splits. Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, founded in 1977 in Atlanta and Greenville, remains Chambers USA 2026 Band 1 for South Carolina Labor & Employment. Womble Bond Dickinson’s Charleston page names aerospace and defense, manufacturing, maritime and ports, data centers, energy and real estate. Those are the national and regional firms that compete for the same corporate and labor seats.

On payroll, the buyers are specific. Scout Motors is building a $2 billion Blythewood production campus plus a $300 million supplier park in the Columbia MSA, with plant legal work — construction, labor, environmental, FILOT — staying in South Carolina while headquarters jobs went to Charlotte. Santee Cooper, the state-owned power and water authority, is running a 2026 rate study and, with Dominion Energy South Carolina, won a 12 June 2026 Public Service Commission siting order for a $5 billion gas plant at Canadys. Boeing in North Charleston and BMW in the Spartanburg MSA are the older manufacturing legal desks the same firms already staff. Public buyers include the South Carolina Attorney General in Columbia, the Judicial Branch, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina, which publishes contact numbers in Columbia, Charleston, Greenville and Florence.

Private payroll jobs in offices of lawyers (NAICS 541110) by county, April 2024. This is law-office employment, including staff, not a lawyer headcount.

04 The wrong instrument

Last year's cell, the swapped metro, and the lockstep that does not apply

Three wrong instruments produce three different misses. The demand under the pay table is not even: Charleston's professional-services payroll is growing while Columbia's is contracting.

A stale statewide numberA New York scale

  1. Last year's statewide cell A finance-approved midpoint from the prior OEWS print, applied to a 2026 offer. It understates the current state midpoint before the metro is even chosen.
  2. The swapped metro Columbia used for Charleston, or Charleston used for a PSC desk in the capital. Same seniority band, different midpoint, and a demand texture that is no longer moving in the same direction.
  3. The lockstep panel wage A bellwether firm sets a class-year base. Peers matching for the same graduates turn that number into a panel wage. It describes scale-firm associates. It does not describe this state.

BLS Economy at a Glance, extracted 11 September 2026, puts Charleston-North Charleston professional and business services at 71,000 in July 2026, up 5.0 percent year on year, against Columbia professional and business services at 53,100, down 5.3 percent. Charleston total nonfarm employment was 439,100, up 1.8 percent; Columbia was 435,700, up 1.0 percent. Unemployment in July 2026, per BLS TED on 9 September 2026, was 3.7 percent in Charleston-North Charleston and 4.0 percent in Columbia. First-quarter 2026 QCEW, released 2 September 2026, put Charleston County’s average weekly wage at $1,492, up 5.7 percent, the largest gain among the seven large counties; the state average was $1,296, rank 37th. Columbia’s legal-occupation-group mean hourly wage was $48.07 in May 2024 and $46.92 in May 2025, so the capital-city legal group did not rise in lockstep with Charleston’s.

A New York-led scale became $235,000 to $455,000 on 1 July 2026. Biglaw Investor compiles those 2026 class-year bases. NALP’s 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025, covers 19 cities with at least five reporting firms; Charleston and Columbia are not among them. The South-region first-year median was $205,000 across 169 offices. Firms of 250 or fewer lawyers in the South sat at a $150,000 first-year median across 20 offices. Neighbouring Charlotte, named only, showed a $215,000 first-year median across 8 offices. The July 2026 raise therefore does not automatically reprice South Carolina mid-market, public, or in-house seats. For the full class-year ladder, including bonuses, see the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

Projections Central, via O*NET, puts South Carolina employed lawyers at 8,170 in 2024 and 8,950 in 2034, a 10 percent rise against 4 percent nationally, with 350 projected annual openings. The base remains small. A company that treats a faster-than-national growth rate as a lockstep market is reading the wrong series.

A Columbia cell in a Charleston market is a restarted shortlist.
On briefing the wrong floor
05 The clocks, not the slogan

What funds a South Carolina legal seat in 2026

Five dated engines move seats in this state. None of them is a New York lockstep cycle. A general counsel staffing against them is staffing labor, construction, siting, FILOT, or insurance-defense work — and pricing the matching band.

A plant still rampingA docket still open

  1. Plant, labor and construction counsel On-site commercial, OSHA, environmental and supplier-park work at the Blythewood campus, plus the older aerospace and auto desks. Mid-level in-house, Rule 405, plus Columbia and Charleston firm desks that follow the capex.
  2. Siting, rates and FILOT A $5 billion gas plant certified in June 2026, a 2026 Santee Cooper rate study, a Department of Revenue FILOT timing ruling, and an Upstate data-center fight that is land-use work, not a generic tech general counsel.
  3. Tort reform and the family bench H.3430 rewrote joint-and-several and dram-shop exposure for 2025 and 2026 filings. Act 182 equalized family-court pay with circuit court. Neither is a lockstep M&A seat.

Scout Motors announced, on 18 September 2025, a $2 billion Blythewood production campus plus a $300 million on-site supplier park, targeting about 4,000 plant jobs and about 1,000 supplier-park jobs, with customer production aimed at 2027. The Post and Courier, on 21 April 2026, reported a $25 million readySC training center open, 100 production and maintenance workers on payroll, and 200 to 300 hires expected in 2026. Headquarters and about 1,200 corporate jobs were sited in Charlotte on 13 November 2025. The plant is a Columbia-MSA capex event; the headquarters is not. 2026 is the construction-to-operations handoff year for outside counsel and for a small on-site or Columbia in-house team. A compensation cell written in 2025 that treated Scout as “future” underprices 2026 Columbia-MSA labor and construction seats.

The Post and Courier, on 17 June 2026, reported that the Public Service Commission issued the siting certification order for the Canadys plant in Colleton County on 12 June 2026, and approved Dominion Energy’s lease of a 50 percent stake to Santee Cooper. The plant is about 2,200 megawatts, with completion expected in 2033; it still needs other state and federal permits and a 71-mile pipeline. That is a decade of siting, environmental, construction and rate-case work for PSC-facing firms in Columbia and Charleston: senior regulatory counsel, not first-year associates. Santee Cooper’s 11 December 2025 memorandum of understanding with Brookfield Asset Management on the two partially built V.C. Summer reactors remains diligence, not pouring concrete.

The Upstate siting fight is a third clock. The Post and Courier, on 27 August 2026, reported that the Public Service Commission unanimously held that NorthMark subsidiary Valara’s on-site 457 megawatt generation at a Spartanburg data center is not subject to the Utility Facility Siting and Environmental Protection Act because it will not export power to the grid for public use. On 11 September 2026 the same paper reported that Spartanburg County now requires the company name on first reading of a FILOT unless a compelling need for confidentiality is shown. GoUpstate, on 22 June 2026, reported first reading of a one-year data-center moratorium; two more readings were still required. H.4583, the South Carolina Data Center Responsibility Act, introduced 13 January 2026, remained in committee on the dated bill page. Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, on 13 August 2026, described a South Carolina Department of Revenue final revenue ruling on FILOT timing. 2026 Upstate demand is land-use, FILOT, PSC and environmental counsel in Greenville, Spartanburg and Columbia, not a generic technology general counsel.

H.3430, signed 28 May 2025, is the liability rewrite underneath insurance-defense and hospitality desks. Fried Goldberg’s year-end 2025 statutory note, posted 22 December 2025 and updated 14 January 2026, restates S.C. § 15-38-15: joint and several now only if a defendant is 50 percent or more at fault, with exceptions for willful, wanton, reckless or intentional conduct; nonparties and settling defendants may be added to the verdict form; dram-shop exposure is capped. A 2026 associate class that still argues pre-H.3430 joint-and-several is mispriced. Act 182, signed 18 May 2026, is the public-pay event: family-court judges move from 92.5 percent to 95 percent of associate-justice salary, matching circuit court. The fiscal note on the 6 May 2026 House version priced $5,840 per year times 66 family-court judges, $385,440 beginning FY 2026–27. Ballotpedia puts the FY 2026 Judicial System budget at $132,824,877 against $125,505,208 in FY 2025, associate justices at $233,606, and Court of Appeals judges at $227,765.

Two operational overlays sit on every desk. The Supreme Court’s Interim Policy on Generative AI, Appellate Case No. 2025-000043, dated 25 March 2025, binds judicial officers and employees; lawyers and litigants must still ensure accuracy and protect confidentiality under Rule 407, SCACR. Nelson Mullins announced on 24 August 2026 that it had deployed Harvey across all practices. The Judicial Branch, on 2 September 2026, issued a statement on a West Publishing Corporation C-Track cybersecurity incident — short-cycle privacy and vendor-contract work, not a standing practice-group build. The District of South Carolina terminated 6,914 civil cases in the twelve months ending 31 March 2025, per Federal Judicial Caseload Statistics 2025. Common Pleas pending inventory at 31 December 2025 stood at 6,301 in Charleston County and 5,398 in Richland.

06 The search

How the South Carolina seat actually fills

We have worked in the New York market for more than 10 years, for companies putting lawyers on their own payroll and for firms staffing associate desks. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

The New York associate line carries a 37 percent counter-offer incidence and a median of 11 working days from offer to signature. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 20 were company or public seats and 13 were firm-side. Of those 20 company seats, 12 were for U.S. companies filling a plant, regional or operations legal desk outside the New York lockstep. Of those 12, 8 first-briefed last year’s statewide cell or a single-state median. 5 of those 8 required a restarted shortlist. Sartori maps on the order of 67,000 lawyers in New York.

Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, 72 of the 96 in-house hiring managers at companies with a South-Atlantic plant or operations seat over a 24-month window named last year’s statewide median as the first number they put on a regional counsel requisition. A general counsel at a heavy-manufacturing company with a South Carolina plant told us last year’s Bureau cell was “the number finance already had.” A head of legal at a state-facing utility said they would not brief Charleston’s median for a Columbia Public Service Commission desk. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, read in the last four in-house waves covering Southeastern operations, recorded a related pattern: 16 of 21 in-house respondents said the first number a candidate named was the published lockstep first-year base.

Of the 33 closed files, 5 stalled past 12 weeks because the client briefed last year’s cell, or one number for two metros, against a table the candidates already knew. That is the finding that does not flatter the method. We still close the file. We close it later, and the company pays the cost of a second list while we do. Completion on the line is 93 percent. Time-to-fill on those five files ran past the 6-to-12-week band. The uncomfortable number is the one that makes the rest of the book believable.

Two anonymized composites from that book, described by category only. A manufacturer opening a mid-level plant-counsel seat against a Blythewood-style ramp refused to brief lockstep and named Columbia, not Charleston. Time-to-fill landed at 10 weeks, inside the band. The offer did not draw a scale-firm counter; signature came in 11 working days. A state-owned utility opened a regulatory counsel seat against a siting-and-rate clock. The first shortlist, assembled against a generic South Carolina lawyer brief, came back as commercial litigators without Public Service Commission work. The search was restated against siting and rate-case practice. Time-to-fill landed at 11 weeks. The utility kept a narrowed Columbia energy panel for hearing counsel while the new hire ramped.

A third composite is the stall. A national firm’s Charleston branch opened an associate seat on a lockstep brief for a construction and labor practice that prices against Columbia as well as Charleston. Candidates who had already read the May 2025 metro split treated the lockstep number as a different market. The shortlist was restated against the dated OEWS cells. The file closed at 14 weeks. That is why a general counsel matching this state has to name the metro and the employer type before anyone prices the person.

Four employer types, four things a general counsel is actually buying. Qualitative; the dollars live in the sortable table above.
Employer type What you buy Where it sits What it is not
Columbia, Charleston or Greenville firm Corporate, labor, construction, or economic-development capacity priced on a South Carolina cell Columbia capital corridor; Charleston port and aerospace; Greenville manufacturing labor A New York lockstep factory; a single statewide class-year number
In-house manufacturing or utility desk A lawyer who owns plant, labor, environmental, siting, or FILOT work inside the company, often on a Rule 405 certificate Blythewood, North Charleston, Spartanburg MSA, Santee Cooper / PSC-facing Columbia A mid-level cash band this page can cite; a substitute for PSC hearing counsel at a Columbia firm
Public law Assistant attorney general, assistant United States attorney, circuit solicitor, law clerk, or family-court seat after Act 182 Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Florence; sixteen circuits The Bar’s 19,000-member roll; lockstep
Legal aid and rural desks A staff attorney on the OEWS 10th-to-25th band Counties the ABA per-capita print leaves thin The Charleston median; a 2026 lockstep first-year

For the in-house hire itself, the service is in-house and general counsel recruiting. For the associate desk, see associate and attorney recruiting. National in-house cash, which lists U.S. metros and does not own this state table, sits on the 2026 in-house counsel salary benchmark. A general counsel who wants the metro named before the search opens should start with the brief, not last year’s cell.

OEWS cells are establishment wages for employed lawyers, SOC 23-1011, May 2025, not partnership draws. Lockstep bases are a national class-year scale, not a South Carolina-adopted floor. The South Carolina Bar's more than 19,000 members are a membership roll, not a job count. Scout's 4,000 plant jobs are a 2027 ramp target, not 2026 headcount. Act 182's $221,926 circuit and family figure is 95 percent of the published associate-justice salary.

South Carolina lawyer pay: common questions

What is the lawyer salary South Carolina figure for 2026?

The dated statewide median is $120,310 — Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, SOC 23-1011, republished by O*NET. The same table puts the 10th percentile at $63,140, the 25th at $80,870, the 75th at $174,620 and the 90th at $301,140. AmericaByNumbers, refreshing that BLS vintage on 19 May 2026, adds a mean of $144,700 and wage-and-salary employment of about 7,890, and reports a 15.5 percent rise versus 2024. The U.S. median on the O*NET table is $159,670, so South Carolina sits about 25 percent below the national employed-lawyer midpoint. That row is wages, not partner residual draws, not equity, and not a seniority band. It is the table a general counsel can actually buy statewide. It is not a Charleston number, not a Columbia number, and it is not the 2026 lockstep first-year of $235,000.

What is lawyer salary Charleston versus lawyer salary Columbia in 2026?

Lawyer salary Charleston sits at a $127,280 May 2025 MSA median; Columbia sits at $105,200 — a $22,080 gap on the same O*NET / BLS OEWS table. Charleston’s 75th percentile is $175,390 against Columbia’s $169,160. Greenville-Anderson-Greer’s 90th percentile is $341,840, above Charleston’s $272,990, so a coastal-premium read of the right tail is false. A general counsel who briefs one South Carolina number for both metros is briefing a discount the public tables do not support.

Does South Carolina pay the 2026 BigLaw lockstep of $235,000?

Not as a statewide floor. The $235,000 first-year lockstep, effective 1 July 2026, is a New York-led scale product, not a Charleston or Columbia published table. NALP’s 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025, covers 19 cities with at least five reporting firms; Charleston and Columbia are not among them. The South-region first-year median was $205,000 across 169 offices; firms of 250 or fewer lawyers in the South sat at $150,000 across 20 offices. Using the 2026 lockstep first-year against the BLS South Carolina median overstates the local employed-lawyer midpoint by about $115,000.

What should a general counsel budget for a South Carolina in-house lawyer in 2026?

Budget the local OEWS percentiles and the metro, not the $235,000 lockstep. South Carolina’s employed-lawyer 75th percentile is $174,620 on the May 2025 OEWS table; Charleston’s is $175,390. Rule 405, SCACR, lets a company staff a Charleston or Columbia desk with a lawyer admitted elsewhere if the principal office sits in South Carolina; the application fee is $400 and paper filings ended 1 May 2026. No dated, clean, non-search-firm survey of mid-level in-house South Carolina cash for 2025 or 2026 sits in the sources for this page. That counsel-level band is omitted, not guessed.

What does a public lawyer earn in South Carolina in 2026?

Associate justices of the South Carolina Supreme Court sit at $233,606 on Ballotpedia’s 2026 court-salary tracker. Act 182, signed 18 May 2026, lifts family-court judges from 92.5 percent to 95 percent of that figure, matching circuit court — $221,926 if the associate-justice cell is the current base. The fiscal note on the 6 May 2026 House version priced the lift at $5,840 each for 66 family-court seats, $385,440 beginning FY 2026–27. Those are public-pay ceilings, not private-practice medians. Legal-aid and junior public desks live nearer the OEWS 10th-to-25th band of $63,140 to $80,870.

How long does a New York associate search take when the seat is a regional in-house desk?

Sartori’s New York associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 weeks, with 11 working days from offer to signature. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 New York associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate. Files written to last year’s statewide cell, or to a single number for Charleston and Columbia, ran to the long end of the band. A company that has not named the metro has not really opened the search.
