Lawyer Salary UK 2026: the London NQ window
A newly qualified solicitor in London still prints £150,000 at Magic Circle as of July 2026. Quinn Emanuel's sterling NQ moved to £189,000 on 1 July. This page is for the person who earns that figure and the general counsel who pays it, and it opens on when a hire off the UK table is cheaper than waiting for the next lockstep round.
The 2026 number is a window, not a rate.
The 2026 lawyer salary UK question in London is a dated window, not a single number. Across 750 structured interviews with London associates, counsel and in-house counsel, Sartori & Partners heard the same buyer problem in two forms: a newly qualified solicitor asking which table they land on, and a general counsel asking whether to hire off that table now or wait for the next lockstep round.
Legal Cheek still listed A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters and Slaughter and May at £150,000 on 21 July 2026 — the May 2024 lockstep. A London general counsel whose comparable is that line is not paying against a moving US scale. Frozen since May 2024. Next move is a UK round.
Four comparables, one 2026 window. The dated NQ table is in the next section; the profession that earns it, and the deals that still need it, sit in the figures below. Lockstep announcements, SRA tables and 2026 instruments.
- 178,428
- Practicing solicitors in England and Wales in July 2026 — the regulated stock that earns, or is paid, the 2026 table.
- Solicitors Regulation Authority, regulated-community statistics, table through July 2026
- 43,811
- In-house solicitors on the roll in 2025 — the payroll a London general counsel actually writes.
- TheCityUK, UK legal services 2025 (Law Society figures), 9 December 2025
- £51bn
- Aggregate value of 60 Takeover Panel firm offers in the year ended 31 March 2026 — the public-M&A book that still needs NQs now.
- The Takeover Panel, Annual Report 2026
Those three figures are not pay. They are the stock, the in-house payroll, and the public-M&A book against which the 2026 table is being spent. The pay itself is the lockstep table in the next section.
The 2026 lawyer salary UK table, by tier and effective date
Legal Cheek’s last full London NQ census, published 29 September 2025, put average newly qualified pay across 100+ listed firms at £118,756. The 2026 window is the set of dated moves that sat down on top of that census.
Start with the last complete compilation, then the 2026 amendments. On 29 September 2025, Legal Cheek reported an average NQ salary of £118,756 across more than 100 Firms Most List outfits, nearly 5 percent above the prior-year report, and counted 18 US London offices paying NQs more than £170,000, with a then-top of £180,000 at Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn and Paul Weiss. The same piece recorded UK inflation at 3.8 percent for the 12 months to August 2025, and noted that some firms had frozen NQ rises to tackle salary compression. That census is a 2025 object. It is not the 1 July 2026 US reset.
The UK-elite line under that census was already old. Freshfields took London NQ to £150,000 on 3 May 2024 (The Lawyer); Clifford Chance matched with a £25,000 increase, introduced the following month and backdated to 1 May 2024 (The Lawyer, 29 May 2024). Legal Cheek’s Baker McKenzie report of 21 July 2026 still listed all five Magic Circle names — A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters, Slaughter and May — at that same £150,000. Clifford Chance’s own 2026 Legal Cheek profile still prints NQ at £150,000 and trainees at £56,000 / £61,000.
The 2026 US London reset is a different machine. Milbank confirmed class of 2025–26 associates at a base of $235,000 on 3 June 2026 (Legal Cheek); the firm’s own London careers page, accessed 11 September 2026, states “Starting salaries as an Associate at Milbank are USD $235,000.00.” Quinn Emanuel, which does not offer UK training contracts, published the only full sterling PQE ladder in this round: NQ £189,000 from 1 July 2026, up from £180,000, with 3 PQE at £273,000 (Legal Cheek, Global Legal Post, City AM and Legal Business, all 5 June 2026). Quinn NQ minus Magic Circle NQ is £39,000. That subtraction is published bases, not a hiring conclusion.
| Firm | Tier | NQ base | Currency | Effective |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Milbank | US London, dollar scale | $235,000 | USD | 1 July 2026 |

A London hire off the 2026 UK table is cheaper than matching the 1 July US scale. It is not cheaper than waiting if the comparable is still £150,000.
Three clocks decide whether waiting is cheaper.
A London general counsel who waits for the next UK lockstep is waiting on a May, July or September review. A newly qualified solicitor who waits is waiting on the same calendars. The US scale already moved.
UK review still aheadUS scale already moved
- Wait The comparable is a frozen UK-elite NQ line, and the seat can sit empty until that firm publishes again.
- Split the office A combined London building runs a sterling review and a grandfathered New York band. Waiting does not equalize them.
- Hire now The comparable is a US London sterling or dollar scale that reset on 1 July, or the work itself already commenced.
A London hire off the 2026 UK table is cheaper than matching the 1 July US scale. It is not cheaper than waiting if the comparable is still £150,000. That sentence is the whole window. The clocks underneath it are dated.
Clock one is the UK review calendar. Hogan Lovells moved London NQ from £140,000 to £145,000 “with effect from 1 May 2026” after its annual London salary review (Legal Cheek, 23 June 2026). Macfarlanes moved NQ from £140,000 to £150,000 effective 1 July 2026, with trainees at £60,000 / £65,000 from September 2026 (Legal Cheek, 3 July 2026). Baker McKenzie moved NQ from £145,000 to £150,000 from the beginning of July 2026 (Legal Cheek, 21 July 2026; Legal Business, 20 July 2026). DLA Piper, Mishcon de Reya and Eversheds Sutherland followed in July with the London and regional prints in the table above. A general counsel whose comparable is one of those names can still wait for the next round. A general counsel whose comparable is Quinn or Milbank cannot: that round has landed.
Clock two is the US class-year. Milbank and Quinn effective dates cluster on 1 July 2026. The next US class is 2027. Holding a London requisition empty from September 2026 to a hoped-for UK May 2027 review, in order to avoid matching a scale that already moved, is a bet that the empty seat is cheaper than £39,000 at NQ. On public-M&A and employment desks where the instrument is already in force, that bet has a start date attached.
Clock three is the dual-scale office. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader launched 1 July 2026 (firm release). Legal Cheek, on 23 June 2026, reported that Cadwalader London associates remain on New York / Cravath-style bands, with a first-year “roughly £170,000” in that article, while Hogan London NQs moved to £145,000 from 1 May 2026. Waiting for Hogan’s next sterling review does not close a gap the combination grandfathered. A&O Shearman combined on 1 May 2024 (GlobeNewswire). Combined qualifying cohorts in that year are noisy; the dual-scale problem is the grandfathered band, not the retention print.
Of 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 14 were company-payroll NQ or PQE seats. In 6 of those 14, the general counsel asked Sartori to hold the offer through the next published UK review rather than match a US London letter. We completed 2 of those 6. Four wait-and-see briefs lost the person to a US London office. The 93 percent completion rate is the associate-line figure across all 33 files, not the wait-and-see cut. The 6 wait-and-see mandates ran to a median of 14 weeks, outside the 6-to-12-week band we quote for the line. That is the finding that does not flatter the easy story that “waiting is cheaper.” It is cheaper only when the seat can actually sit empty.
A general counsel at a listed UK bank told us they would not put £189,000 on an internal NQ because the remuneration committee had printed Magic Circle as the benchmark. That is a coherent board decision. It is also a 2026 window decision: the committee is pricing against a line that has not moved since May 2024, while the candidate is reading a 1 July US letter.
| Situation | Hire now | Wait | The dated driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comparable is a US London sterling or dollar scale | Yes — the round already landed | No — the next US class-year is 2027 | Quinn £189,000 and Milbank $235,000 are effective 1 July 2026. |
| Comparable is Magic Circle / Macfarlanes / Baker at £150,000 | Only if the empty seat costs more than the freeze | Yes, if the seat can sit empty until the next published UK round | The UK-elite NQ line has not moved since May 2024 (MC) or July 2026 (Macfarlanes, Baker). |
| Takeover Code, ERA, IDV or SMS work is already on the desk | Yes — an empty seat misses dated instruments | No — May 2027 does not rewind February or October 2026 | Code amendments in force 4 February 2026; tribunal limits 1 October 2026; IDV live since 18 November 2025. |
| The requisition is an ECM / listing NQ | Not forced by 2026 volume | Often — IPO count has not recovered | FCA recorded 14 UK commercial-company IPOs in 2025 and one by March 2026. |
| The office runs two scales after a transatlantic combination | Matching the sterling NQ is cheaper than the grandfathered New York band | Waiting does not equalize the two machines | Hogan London NQ £145,000 from 1 May 2026; Cadwalader London associates remain on a New York-style band. |

Legal Cheek, 6 July 2026 ↗Who pays the solicitor salary, and who earns it
The same qualified solicitor is paid from two ledgers: a law-firm lockstep, or a company payroll. The SRA package is identical. The 2026 table is not.
Firm invoiceCompany payroll
- Panel invoice The general counsel buys the NQ on a firm matter. The lockstep is the firm’s. The company pays the rate card.
- In-house payroll The same qualifier sits inside the company. The City table is a reservation price, not an obligation.
- Public grade Government Legal Department, the Bank of England Legal Directorate, the Crown Prosecution Service — same qualification, Civil Service architecture, not the City NQ.
TheCityUK, in its December 2025 report, put about 25 percent of England and Wales solicitors in-house, up 8 percent on the previous year for that in-house community, with women 61 percent of the in-house community against 53 percent of practicing-certificate holders. Most of those in-house solicitors work in the private sector, many in financial services; the same chapter notes major UK financial institutions with in-house litigation teams of 15 to 40 people. That is the payroll a London chief legal officer actually writes. It is not the Magic Circle lockstep, and it is not Quinn’s sterling scale.
Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. That is coverage of the city we search: who sits where, at which seniority, on which desk.
The regulatory seat of the work is clean. SRA guidance updated 18 November 2024 treats the in-house solicitor’s client as the employing organization — the board of a company, trustees of a charity, an NHS trust, a local authority, or central government under the Civil Service Code. SRA guidance of 25 November 2019 is explicit that a company, fund or public body that uses solicitors only for itself or connected bodies, and not to the public, need not be an SRA-authorized firm. The person on the payroll is still an SRA-regulated solicitor. A London general counsel who hires an NQ is not founding a law firm. They are putting a regulated person on the books.
The credential gate is the same on both ledgers. Admission requires a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2 (or the LPC transitional route through 31 December 2032), two years’ qualifying work experience, and character and suitability, then a practicing certificate (SRA SQE Q&A, 28 January 2026; QWE page, 26 January 2024). QWE can sit inside a company legal team. A chief legal officer can grow a qualifier without buying a City training contract. Quinn Emanuel still harvests September qualifiers from other firms’ contracts, because it does not run one. The SRA recorded 9,601 individuals admitted in 2023/24 (SRA annual admissions data, 2 February 2026). Kaplan recorded 13,081 candidates sitting SQE1 in the 2024/25 academic year (SRA, 21 April 2026). That is the supply pipe into the 2026 table, not a reason to match every rung of it.
September and spring 2026 qualifying rounds dumped NQs onto those published bases. Clifford Chance kept 37 of 45 autumn 2026 qualifiers (82 percent), all of whom applied (Legal Cheek, 8 September 2026), with no practice-area breakdown. A&O Shearman kept 34 of 44 (77 percent), all permanent (Legal Cheek, 31 July 2026). Macfarlanes kept 24 of 29 autumn 2026 NQs (83 percent), all permanent (The Lawyer, 4 September 2026). Where destinations were disclosed: Pinsent Masons autumn 2026 put 18 of 53 retained NQs into finance and projects, 16 into risk advisory, 14 into transactions (The Lawyer, 14 August 2026); Baker McKenzie autumn 2026 kept 8 of 12, with seats in corporate reorganizations, M&A, private equity, disputes, employment, real estate and trade (The Lawyer, 2 September 2026). Those are the practice labels a general counsel is paying for on the 2026 table, on the invoice or on the payroll.
The newly qualified solicitor is paid on a published base, then on a PQE ladder only where a firm has printed one.
- Read the effective date. A September 2026 qualifier at Clifford Chance lands on £150,000; the same person at Quinn lands on £189,000; at Milbank, on $235,000. Those are 2026 numbers, not a career average.
- Trainee pay is the step before. Clifford Chance still lists £56,000 / £61,000; Milbank lists £70,000 / £75,000; Macfarlanes moves to £60,000 / £65,000 from September 2026; Mishcon to £52,500 / £57,500 from July 2026. The NQ jump is the lockstep a company inherits if it hires that person the month they qualify.
- Mid-PQE is unpublished on the UK-elite line. Quinn’s 3 PQE at £273,000 is a published sterling fact. Magic Circle does not publish a matching 3 PQE base, so compression cannot be priced as a Magic Circle number.
- ONS is not City NQ. Median gross annual earnings for full-time UK employees in post at least a year were £39,039 in April 2025 (ONS ASHE, 23 October 2025). Put that next to Magic Circle NQ and the City table is a different labor market, not a premium on the national median.
The London general counsel either pays the NQ on a panel invoice or puts the same person on an internal band.
- Name the comparable tier. Pricing an in-house NQ against “the City” without naming Magic Circle, US London, national or regional is pricing against a spread from £110,000 to £189,000.
- Public bodies are a third buyer. The Government Legal Department’s 2025–26 accounts put around 3,000 lawyers and paralegals inside a staff of about 3,900, with always-on rounds onboarding 60 to 80 lawyers. The Bank of England Legal Directorate is around 170 colleagues, with typical vacancies at 1–4 PQE (careers page, accessed 11 September 2026). Those desks hire the SRA qualification on Civil Service grades, not the Quinn ladder.
- Practice labels that absorbed 2026 NQs are not a mystery. Where firms disclosed destinations, The Lawyer’s 2026 retention tracker shows finance and projects, corporate / M&A / private equity, disputes, risk and regulatory, real estate and employment taking the September and spring seats. Magic Circle firms still refuse to publish NQ destination mixes. A general counsel instructing those practices is buying the table whether or not they hire the person in-house.
Waiting is waiting inside the instruments, not outside them.
The 2026 window sits on a stack of instruments that already commenced. A general counsel who waits for the next lockstep is waiting inside that stack.
Capital-markets workEmployment and corporate filings
- Public M&A and the Code Dual-class, IPO and buyback language is already in force. The NQ on a bid desk is drafting it now, not after the next UK review.
- Employment-rights waves Tribunal limitation and Day-1 rights land inside the 2026 NQ year. January 2027 unfair-dismissal is the wave after September qualifiers arrive.
- Identity verification Companies House identity verification is a 2026 workload for corporate and funds counsel, in-house and on the panel, through the mid-November transition.
Waiting for the next lockstep is waiting inside the 2026 instrument stack, not outside it. The Takeover Panel’s Instrument 2025/1 (dual-class share structures, IPOs and share buybacks) took effect 4 February 2026 (Panel Statement 2026/2). Public-M&A, ECM and sponsor-side private-equity seats that already run the City Code need NQs and 1–3 PQE who can draft Rule 2.9 / Rule 9 and dual-class language now. PCP 2026/1, published 9 July 2026 with comments to 2 October 2026, is a miscellaneous consultation — do not staff a 2026 NQ solely for that paper.
The cycle underneath the Code is value up, volume mixed. Nearly half of the Panel’s firm offers in the year ended 31 March 2026 were private equity and similar, about one third international corporates, twelve offers greater than £1 billion, against 57 offers and about £43 billion the prior year. LexisNexis Market Standards, for 1 January–30 June 2026, counted 25 firm offers against 36 in H1 2025, but £35.3 billion against £22 billion, with overseas bidders 94 percent of value. A general counsel waiting for a 2027 IPO rebound is waiting on a different cycle. The FCA’s listings data, dated 26 June 2026, recorded 14 UK commercial-company IPOs in 2025, 11 in 2024, 9 in 2023, against 43 in 2021, and one IPO in 2026 year-to-March against 15 equity delistings. The UK Listing Rules have been in force since 29 July 2024 (PS24/6). ECM NQs at Magic Circle and City firms are a 2024-rules seat, not a 2021-volume seat.
Employment is the in-house clock. The Employment Rights Act 2025 received Royal Assent in December 2025. GOV.UK’s timeline, updated 25 August 2026, puts Day-1 paternity and unpaid parental leave, and SSP without the lower-earnings limit and waiting days, on 6 April 2026; the employment-tribunal time limit moves from three months to six on 1 October 2026 (S.I. 2026/954); unfair-dismissal qualifying period moves to six months in January 2027. A head of legal who hires an employment NQ off the September table before 1 October 2026 buys the person who will live the new limitation period. A head of legal at a PE-backed software company told us an empty employment seat through 1 October 2026 was more expensive than matching a national-firm NQ, because the tribunal limitation period was moving from three months to six. That is a company clock, not a Magic Circle one.
Companies House made identity verification mandatory for new directors and persons with significant control from 18 November 2025, with existing directors on the next confirmation statement over twelve months, and 6 to 7 million individuals by mid-November 2026 (GOV.UK, 5 August 2025). Solicitors may act as authorized corporate service providers (the Companies House ACSP route) if AML-supervised. That is a 2026 corporate, company-secretarial and funds workload, in-house and on the panel, not a 2027 one.
The CMA designated Apple and Google as having strategic market status in mobile platforms on 22 October 2025, under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 regime in force 1 January 2025. SMS firms must report UK-connected mergers at or above £25 million pre-completion. Competition and tech-regulatory NQs at Magic Circle, US London and in-house at designated firms and their counterparties are 2026 live work. The Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 18 December 2025. Ashurst spring 2026 accepted 17 of 20, with seats across projects and energy among corporate, dispute resolution, global loans and real estate (The Lawyer, 6 March 2026). Those desks are not waiting on a 2027 lockstep to have matters.
Dispute demand is not a pay table, but it sizes the other half of the NQ mix. TheCityUK reported that in 2024, 72 percent of Commercial Court cases and 80 percent of Patents Court cases had at least one international party. The Law Society’s International Data Insights Report 2025 (9 September 2025) recorded 196 written Commercial Court judgments from October 2023 to September 2024, and the LCIA’s 2024 caseload with 78 percent of cases governed by English law. Baker McKenzie’s spring 2026 retention put disputes, employment, private equity and competition among the disclosed destinations (The Lawyer, 13 March 2026). A general counsel instructing those practices is already paying the 2026 table on the invoice, whether or not they open an in-house seat.
Waiting for the next lockstep is waiting inside the 2026 instrument stack, not outside it.
Price the comparable, then run the clock.
We have worked the London associate market for more than 10 years, for companies putting solicitors on the payroll and for firms filling NQ and PQE seats. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches, with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.
Sartori & Partners maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. London associate work — interviews, mandate files, and those quarterly waves — sits inside that program.
Counter-offer incidence on that London associate line is 35 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days. In 8 of the 14 company-payroll seats inside those 33 files, a US London letter appeared as a competing offer inside that 12-day window; four of those eight signed or walked inside 6 working days. The quarterly survey is a separate instrument from the interview cohort. In the Q2 2026 wave, 41 of 68 London NQ-band respondents who had seen a US London letter said they would not accept a UK-firm NQ without a written review date. That is why a general counsel who prints Magic Circle as the benchmark, after the candidate has seen Quinn or Milbank, is not having the same conversation as the remuneration committee.
Of 186 respondents in that London interview cohort who sat inside company legal departments over a 24-month window, 114 told us their general counsel priced an NQ or 1-PQE in-house seat against the Magic Circle £150,000 line rather than against the US London sterling scale. Of 94 NQ and 1-PQE firm-side respondents in the same cohort, 52 said a US London letter would move them inside a month. Those two reads are why the window has two readers: the person who earns the figure has already seen the other table.
UK lockstepUS class-year
- UK lockstep A published NQ, reviewed on a May, July or September calendar, with trainee steps underneath. Predictable. Slow to move.
- Dual-scale office A transatlantic combination that left a New York band and a sterling review in the same building. Two reservation prices for one postcode.
- US sterling or dollar A class-year scale paid in pounds or dollars, reset in the first week of June 2026, effective 1 July. The next class is 2027.
Three London files, anonymized
A listed UK bank asked us, in spring 2026, to fill an in-house NQ on a financial-services regulatory desk. The general counsel benchmarked against Magic Circle at £150,000 and asked us not to match a US London letter. Time to a first offer was 7 weeks. The candidate had seen a Quinn-scale print. The bank held. The person joined a US London office. The file closed unfilled at week 13. That is one of the four wait-and-see losses inside the 6.
A PE-backed software company opened an employment NQ in July 2026, with the 1 October tribunal-limit change on the work plan. The head of legal matched a national-firm London NQ, not Quinn. We closed in 8 weeks, inside the 6-to-12-week band, with no counter. The board had priced the empty seat through October as more expensive than the lockstep. That is a hire-now file where the comparable was national, not US London, and the instrument was the dated one.
An energy-infrastructure sponsor hired a 2-PQE corporate solicitor onto the payroll in 2026 for Companies House identity-verification and ACSP work, off a City sterling base below Magic Circle. A US London letter arrived on day 9 of the 12-day window. The company matched on title and scope, not on the US number, and the candidate signed on day 11. Completing that file did not require matching £189,000. It required answering the letter inside the window we actually run.
TheCityUK counted more than 200 foreign law firms from around 40 jurisdictions in London, and all of the world’s top 50 law firms with London offices employing more than 8,500 lawyers, mainly from the UK. SRA counted 7,674 registered foreign lawyers in July 2026. Those offices are the other reservation price on a London NQ, whether the buyer is a firm or a company. They are also why a lawyer salary London conversation that never names US sterling is incomplete.
TheCityUK put 2024 legal-activity revenue at £52.3 billion, up 11 percent from 2023, with sector GVA of £52 billion. That is the capital behind the table, not a reason to match every rung of it. A chief legal officer who needs a Takeover Code NQ in a live offer period is in a different conversation from a chief legal officer who needs an ECM NQ while listing volume stays thin. Both conversations use the same 2026 table. They do not use it the same way.
If you are the solicitor earning the 2026 figure, the work is to name the comparable before you name the offer: UK lockstep, dual-scale office, or US sterling and dollar. If you are the general counsel paying it, the work is the same sentence in reverse: name the comparable, then decide whether the seat can sit empty until the next published round. We run that conversation as a confidential associate and in-house search. The company conversation starts on the hire side of the site.
Lawyer salary UK 2026: questions from both sides of the table
What is lawyer salary UK for a newly qualified solicitor in 2026?
Magic Circle London NQ pay is still £150,000 as of July 2026; Quinn Emanuel prints £189,000 from 1 July 2026. That £39,000 gap is the live window. Milbank’s own London careers page states associate starting pay as USD $235,000. National-firm London NQ bases moved in May–September 2026 to bands from Mishcon de Reya’s £110,000 to DLA Piper’s £140,000. These are published bases before bonus, not total compensation, and they are the figures a general counsel matches or refuses.
What is a solicitor salary London newly qualified seat actually prints?
A solicitor salary London NQ now prints from £110,000 at Mishcon de Reya (from September 2026) to £189,000 at Quinn Emanuel. Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 census put the average NQ across 100+ listed firms at £118,756, before the 2026 US London reset. A London general counsel who prices an in-house NQ against “the City” without naming a tier is pricing against those two 2026 published bases.
What is a trainee solicitor salary at Magic Circle and US London firms in 2026?
Clifford Chance still lists a trainee solicitor salary at £56,000 then £61,000 on its 2026 Legal Cheek profile; Milbank’s London careers page lists £70,000 then £75,000. Macfarlanes moves trainees to £60,000 / £65,000 from September 2026. The NQ step from those seats is the lockstep the September qualifier is paid on, and it is the number a company inherits if it hires that person onto the payroll the same month.
When is a London NQ hire cheaper than waiting for the next lockstep round?
It is cheaper to hire now when the comparable is a US London office that moved on 1 July 2026. The next US class-year reset is 2027, not a UK May review. Waiting is cheaper when the comparable is still the Magic Circle £150,000 line, frozen since May 2024, and the seat can sit empty until that firm’s next published round. Waiting does not close a dual-scale gap inside a merged London office that grandfathered a New York band.
How should a London general counsel price an in-house NQ against the City table?
TheCityUK counted 43,811 in-house solicitors on the roll in 2025; that desk does not automatically match City NQ. A company that uses solicitors only for itself need not be an SRA-authorized firm, but the person on the payroll is still an SRA-regulated solicitor. Price the seat against the tier you actually compete with — Magic Circle, US London, national, or regional — and against whether the work is already live under the Takeover Code, the Employment Rights Act 2025, or Companies House identity verification.
Do regional solicitor salaries in England move with the London NQ table?
DLA Piper’s regional NQ moved to £84,000 in 2026 against £140,000 in London, per Legal Cheek on 6 July 2026. Eversheds Sutherland moved regional NQ to £80,000 against a London £120,000. A head of legal hiring in Manchester or Leeds is not waiting on the same lockstep as a London general counsel, and matching a London US-sterling letter for a regional seat is a different decision.
The lockstep announcements, the SRA tables, and the 2026 instruments.
NQ bases come from firm pages and from the legal press that printed the effective date. Profession size comes from the SRA. Market size and in-house stock come from TheCityUK and the Law Society. The window’s drivers come from the Takeover Panel, the FCA, the CMA, Companies House and the Employment Rights Act commencement calendar.

NQ figures are published bases before bonus, with the effective date the publisher attached. Legal Cheek’s £118,756 is a 2025 mean across its list, not an ONS occupation median. Takeover Panel counts are Code-governed firm offers; LexisNexis H1 2026 is a separate public-M&A cut. TheCityUK legal-activity revenue and the Law Society export series are two series; this page uses TheCityUK for revenue and in-house stock. FX prints are the conversions the cited page stated. Sartori interview, survey, mapping and mandate figures are internal research, reviewed by the owner.
Our own figures — the London interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori number quoted above.
