Vancouver lawyer pay in 2026: the CAD gap versus Toronto

As of 1 January 2025, NALP's Western Canada first-year median is CAD 115,000. Toronto's published city median on the same survey is CAD 130,000. In USD at the Bank of Canada 10 September 2026 rate, that is 83,201 versus 94,053 — the number an associate earns and a general counsel has to match.

Two readers. One CAD gap. Four instruments.

The 2026 lawyer salary Vancouver question is not a single lockstep. It is a Western Canada median, a Toronto contrast cell, an occupation-wide hourly wage, and a public grid — and a general counsel who matches the wrong one overpays or loses the hire.

Lens 01 · The NALP gap CAD 15,000 sits between Western Canada and Toronto on the same survey day.

NALP's free bulletin, figures as of 1 January 2025, prints a Western Canada first-year median of CAD 115,000 and a Toronto city median of CAD 130,000. At the Bank of Canada 10 September 2026 daily average of 1.3822, that is USD 83,201 versus USD 94,053. Same survey. Different city cell.

Four instruments, one hiring year. The national Canada table and the Toronto table live on sibling pages; this page owns the Vancouver contrast. Every number is cited below.

02 The dated table

The 2026 lawyer salary Vancouver table is a contrast, not a lockstep.

NALP's national Canadian lockstep by year of call is the only public private-practice ladder with a Western Canada cut. Read it as a median across 66 offices, then set Toronto beside it — never as a second Vancouver grid.

The National Association for Law Placement’s May 2025 bulletin is the dated private-practice instrument this page opens on. Figures are office-reported base as of 1 January 2025 (or FY 2025 if set slightly later), rounded to the nearest CAD 25, from 66 law offices across five provinces. The free bulletin’s city range runs from Ottawa at CAD 97,000 to Toronto at CAD 130,000. Western Canada prints at CAD 115,000 for a first-year. NALP’s paid report includes a Vancouver city analysis; that dollar cell is not in the public bulletin, and it is omitted here rather than guessed.

Offices of more than 100 lawyers reported a first-year median of CAD 130,000 on that same 1 January 2025 survey; boutiques reported CAD 127,500. The modal first-year nationally was CAD 130,000, 26 percent of reported salaries. In firms of 301 or more lawyers, the 2017-call median reached CAD 233,750 across 24 offices, against CAD 176,500 in firms of 100 or fewer across 10 offices. Those size cuts are national. They are not a Georgia Street grid.

Toronto’s 2025 raise is the contrast cell, not this page’s grid. The Globe and Mail on 4 March 2025 reported that large Bay Street firms raised associate base for the first significant time since 2021 — about CAD 5,000 for early years and CAD 15,000–20,000 for later years — taking top-tier first-year to about CAD 135,000 before bonuses and seventh-year base to about CAD 275,000. Named as having raised: Osler, Torys, Goodmans, Stikeman Elliott, McCarthy Tetrault, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, Cassels, BLG, Fasken, Aird & Berlis. No Vancouver dollar cell appears on that page. No later 2026 Vancouver or Toronto grid announcement was found on the pages opened for this article.

National student weekly on the same NALP survey was CAD 1,550 for 1Ls, 2Ls and 2024–25 articling; Toronto’s median for all three was CAD 1,900. Vancouver’s student week is not printed in the free bulletin. Calendar-2024 performance bonuses ran from a median CAD 7,925 (called 2024) to CAD 30,000 (called 2017). Staff lawyer and counsel national medians ran CAD 222,000 (called 2015–2017) to CAD 248,875 (called before 2011). Those bonus and counsel cells are national context. They do not become a Vancouver all-in package by being written next to Georgia Street.

03 Occupation wage

The hourly series is a different labor market.

Job Bank's Lower Mainland median is not downtown lockstep. It is the occupation-wide wage a head of legal will meet in a budget conversation that also includes Crown, in-house and sole practice.

Employment and Social Development Canada Job Bank, Lawyer wages, updated 19 November 2025.

Job Bank, updated 19 November 2025, puts Lower Mainland–Southwest lawyer wages at CAD 38.46 low / CAD 66.65 median / CAD 112.09 high. British Columbia prints 37.98 / 65.00 / 107.69. Toronto Region prints 33.65 / 69.74 / 112.98. Alberta’s provincial median of CAD 78.85 exceeds both city-region medians. Non-wage benefit incidence was 97.2 percent in B.C. against 96.1 percent nationally and 94.8 percent in Ontario. Derived at 40 hours × 52 weeks — Job Bank itself publishes hourly — the Lower Mainland median is CAD 138,632 (USD 100,298) against Toronto CAD 145,059 (USD 104,948). Treat those annual lines as arithmetic, not as a published lockstep.

WorkBC’s career profile for Lawyers and Quebec notaries (NOC 41101) prints annual earnings of CAD 138,802, sourced to the B.C. Labour Market Information Office and derived from 2025 Job Bank wage data. That is the same hourly series in another wrapper. The Census 2021 geography underneath it is the hiring map: 10,405 lawyers in Mainland/Southwest (74.7 percent of the provincial 13,930 employed), 2,125 on Vancouver Island/Coast, 955 in Thompson-Okanagan. Forecasted openings 2025–2035 run 5,220 province-wide, of which 3,480 in Mainland/Southwest at 0.9 percent average annual employment growth. Industry openings: Professional, Scientific and Technical Services 4,340; Public Administration 390; Finance, Insurance and Real Estate 130.

Job Bank’s later Labour Force Survey estimate is about 17,650 people in the occupation in British Columbia, 91 percent full-time, 41 percent self-employed, 56 percent men / 43 percent women. Sector mix: legal services (NAICS 5411) 78 percent; provincial and territorial public administration (NAICS 912) 6 percent. Outlook 2025–2027, updated 10 December 2025: Good for B.C., Moderate for Lower Mainland–Southwest. National COPS recorded employment of 124,300 in 2023. Do not collapse 17,650 (LFS occupation), 15,081 (LSBC 2025 practicing), 14,831 (FLSC 2024 practicing) and 10,405 (Census 2021 Mainland/Southwest). They are different years and different definitions.

The Law Society of British Columbia’s 2025 Annual Report counted 15,081 practicing lawyers, 1,755 non-practicing, 1,161 retired, and 654 new calls. The 2026 fee notice of 25 September 2025 budgets 15,324 full-time-equivalent practicing lawyers and 682 PLTC students, with practicing-lawyer growth projected at 2.5 percent, down from 3.0–3.9 percent recently. Full-time practice fee CAD 2,536 plus indemnity CAD 1,800 equals CAD 4,336. Lawyers Indemnity Fund received 1,322 claim reports in 2025; in-house lawyers purchasing optional coverage numbered 527, up 16 percent from 2024. That 527 is the in-house buyer the general counsel on this page belongs to — a counted optional-policy stock, not an LSO-style sector split, which B.C. does not publish.

LSBC 2025 self-reported practice-area counts. Categories overlap: a lawyer may appear in more than one row. Securities-reporting is a thin counted seat, not an absence of capital-markets work.

04 Matching the figure

A general counsel matches a desk, not a Bay Street year.

Crown, PEA, a posted Vancouver associate band, and a U.S. dollar floor are four different matching instructions. Pick the desk the requisition actually sits on.

Private lockstepPublic grid

  1. Firm associate scale Office-reported private-practice base. NALP’s Western Canada cut and, where a firm posts it, a Vancouver band by years of call — not a Cravath ladder.
  2. Occupation wage Job Bank hourly for NOC 41101. Mixes every paid lawyer in the region. Useful for a board pack. Useless as an offer letter.
  3. Crown and PEA steps The grids a provincial legal department and a Crown utility already pay. They overlap first-year private cells and then run past them at working level.

NALP Western Canada first-year median

As of 1 January 2025. The public cell that includes Vancouver. Not a Vancouver-only median.

NALP Bulletin+, May 2025 ↗

The Crown Counsel Association scale, rates effective 1 April 2026 after +2.6 percent on 1 April 2025 and +2.1 percent on 1 April 2026, is the single provincial prosecutor grid, including Vancouver Crown offices. Level 1 (years of call 1–5): CAD 124,213.51 to 160,885.93. Level 2 (years 6–11): CAD 171,585.15 to 222,523.21. Level 3 steps 1–7: CAD 229,138.67 to 263,131.20. Derived USD at 1.3822: Level 1 USD 89,866–116,399; Level 2 USD 124,139–160,993; Level 3 USD 165,778–190,371. BC Prosecution Service, updated 3 September 2026, counts about 500 Crown Counsel and 410 professional staff province-wide, with a Vancouver region plus Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions offices in Vancouver and Victoria.

The PEA Legal Counsel grid, rates effective 5 April 2026, is the solicitor and litigator series at the Ministry of Attorney General Legal Services Branch and listed agencies. The 11 March 2026 memorandum of settlement records +3.0 percent on 1 April 2025, +3.0 percent on 5 April 2026, and a 1 April 2025 arbitration of 4.56 percent. Level 1 (≤5 years of call): CAD 117,373.58 to 152,026.34. Level 2 (6–11 years): CAD 162,136.65 to 210,269.74. Level 3 steps 1–7: CAD 216,520.16 to 248,641.32. Level 4 steps 1–6: CAD 250,320.01 to 302,471.00. Article 15 pays 7 percent of basic salary in lieu of overtime, shift and standby, not in the annual column. Automatic progression Level 1 to Level 2 and Level 2 to Level 3 unless the employer establishes the counsel has not met the standard.

Legal Aid BC’s General Terms and Conditions, updated May 2026, pay roster counsel CAD 136.87 / 143.71 / 150.56 an hour on or after 1 April 2026 for Tiers 1–3 by years of call. Junior-counsel hourly on the same date: CAD 117.17 / 123.03 / 128.89. Vancouver and the rest of the province share the tier table. That is a representation-contract fee, not associate salary, and it is the instrument sitting under LSBC’s large family and plaintiff-civil counts — not the downtown cell this thesis opens on.

One Vancouver associate band is public because the employer posted it. McCarthy Tetrault’s Business Law Associate seat in the Vancouver office, posted 27 April 2026, asked for 3–5 years post-call in corporate, commercial and/or securities and printed a salary range of CAD 145,000–185,000. That is a mid-senior national-firm Vancouver cell, not a first-year lockstep. It sits above the Globe’s Toronto first-year of about CAD 135,000 and well below the seventh-year CAD 275,000 cell. A general counsel matching a 3–5 year corporate counsel hire can start there without pretending Georgia Street runs Bay Street lockstep.

The U.S. large-firm floor is the USD column a cross-border chief legal officer will ask about. Above the Law’s 5 June 2026 scorecard recorded Milbank’s 2 June 2026 move to USD 235,000 (class of 2026/2025) through USD 455,000 (class of 2018), presumed effective 1 July 2026. At 1.3822 that first-year floor is about CAD 324,817 — more than double the Globe’s Toronto CAD 135,000 cell and nearly triple NALP’s Western Canada CAD 115,000 median. It is a U.S. scale. It is not a Vancouver raise.

05 Who pays it

The paycheck is paid from two desks that share a downtown.

Most B.C. lawyers still sit in private practice. The general counsel who matches the 2026 figure sits in a Vancouver-headquartered miner, a Crown utility, a provincial legal department, or a capital-markets regulator.

Vancouver is not a thin legal town. Lexpert’s Largest Firms — Vancouver directory (accessed 2026) puts Lawson Lundell at 154 Vancouver lawyers (firm 226), Fasken 153 / 862, BLG 130 / 825, Blake, Cassels & Graydon 125 / 691, McCarthy Tetrault 113 / 839, DLA Piper (Canada) 108 / 306, Harper Grey 101 / 101, Alexander Holburn 98 / 111, FARRIS 94 / 104, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada 91 / 597, Clark Wilson 85 / 85, Dentons Canada 84 / 560. Lawson Lundell, on 2 July 2026, citing Business in Vancouver, reported 166 lawyers practicing out of the downtown Vancouver office, 22–26 articling students locally each year, and 280 staff. The 154 and 166 figures are different publishers and dates; treat the largest local office as a 150–170 band, and do not average them.

The Federation of Law Societies of Canada’s 2024 report still describes a small-firm province: 2,871 sole practitioners in B.C., 888 firms of 2–10, 131 of 11–25, 24 of 26–50, and 25 of 51 or more. Ontario held 45,109 practicing members against B.C.’s 14,831 in that 2024 compilation. Legal 500 Canada’s 2026 editor’s notes still locate Seven Sister corporate dominance in Toronto; Vancouver is named for dispute-resolution specialist work and for mining, Indigenous, and energy benches. Practice labels the 2026 edition actually ranks here: mining and mining finance, dispute resolution for British Columbia, Indigenous law, power, corporate and M&A.

  1. The associate who earns it Downtown private practice, national-firm Vancouver office, or a 100-lawyer litigation boutique. Job Bank still puts 78 percent of the occupation in legal services.
  2. The in-house counsel who left that grid Corporate counsel and VP Legal at a Vancouver-HQ miner or a pending global mining headquarters. Optional LIF coverage counted 527 in-house lawyers in 2025.
  3. The general counsel who matches it The buyer this page is written for. Prices a specialist seat against a posted band and a public grid, not against a Toronto seventh-year cell the Vancouver office does not run.

Your job is to match a desk the 2026 docket is actually buying, in CAD and a dated USD column, without importing a Toronto lockstep the Vancouver office does not publish.

  • Start from the posted band when one exists. The 27 April 2026 Vancouver 3–5 year business-law range is a real employer number.
  • Read Crown and PEA as competitors for Indigenous, natural-resources and regulatory counsel, not as a discount to private practice.
  • Price mining M&A and DRIPA work at 4–8 years, not as a first-year generalist requisition.
  • Keep Toronto as contrast. The national Canada table and the Toronto table are sibling pages; do not rebuild them in this offer memo.

Your 2026 cash is a Western Canada cell, a posted Vancouver band, or a public step — and a Toronto seventh-year number you do not hold will not survive verification.

  • Carry the instrument you are actually on. NALP Western Canada, a posted range, Crown, or PEA. Not a Bay Street cell from a newspaper.
  • A National Mobility Agreement transfer can put a Toronto call on a Vancouver seat after a reading requirement; in-house counsel transferring to B.C. may be exempted. FLSC recorded 216 B.C. transfers in 2024.
  • PREP replaces PLTC from September 2026. The credential gate is changing format, not freezing hiring.
  • Downtown articling for 2027–28 runs on Vancouver Bar Association guidelines: applications 30 June 2026, interviews 10–12 August 2026.
06 The 2026 docket

The paycheck is being spent on seats the docket created.

A single-regulator appeal, an UNDRIP alignment fight, a Vancouver-HQ critical-minerals merger, a tariff order, and a housing-and-power build are the 2026 hiring brief. A first-year generalist is not what those rules buy.

A statute landsA seat is funded

  1. Mining, ICA, Indigenous Anglo Teck’s Vancouver headquarters, Gitxaala through the Supreme Court of Canada, and DRIPA s. 7 consent machinery. Five-plus years, not a first-year class.
  2. Trade, housing, power United States surtaxes from 8 September 2026, SSMUH already in force, Site C in service and transmission still to build. Specialists at 3–7 years.
  3. Professional regulation The Legal Professions Act appeal year. Mid-senior constitutional and regulatory counsel through 2026; the new regulator’s rules consultation into 2027–28.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia dismissed the Law Society’s challenge to the Legal Professions Act on 29 April 2026; the Society appealed on 5 May 2026. CBA British Columbia still clocks the new regulator, Legal Professions BC, between July 2027 and January 2028. The Act received Royal Assent on 16 May 2024. It replaces the Law Society of British Columbia and the Society of Notaries Public with a single regulator and creates a Regulated Paralegal category; elected lawyers will not hold a majority of the new board. Chief Justice Skolrood held that Bill 21 does not improperly undermine the independence of the Bar and is not ultra vires. An injunction had already been refused in 2024 BCSC 1292. If regulated paralegals take a defined slice of routine family and access work, that subtracts some junior generalist volume without touching the mining and M&A cell a general counsel is matching.

Gitxaala v. British Columbia (Chief Gold Commissioner), 2025 BCCA 430 (5 December 2025), treats UNDRIP as part of B.C. positive law. Osler’s 17 December 2025 case note records a 2–1 Court of Appeal: DRIPA s. 2(a) and Interpretation Act s. 8.1(3) bring UNDRIP in as an interpretive standard; s. 3 imposes a justiciable duty to make B.C. laws consistent with UNDRIP; the majority declared that an online system allowing automatic registration of mineral claims without prior consultation was inconsistent with Article 32(2). The Supreme Court of Canada granted leave in May 2026, with no hearing date set, as Canada’s National Observer reported on 22 May 2026. A Vancouver mining general counsel is pricing uncertainty through that docket, not a repealed DRIPA.

The positive pipeline sits beside the appeal. The Province’s “Making Decisions Together” page, updated 17 July 2026, records live DRIPA s. 7 consent agreements: Eskay Creek received an Environmental Assessment Certificate, Mines Act permit and federal approvals in January 2026 (about 1,000 peak construction jobs, more than 770 peak operations jobs, projected capital CAD 713 million); Red Chris expansion certificate changes in June 2026; a Simpcw First Nation consent-based agreement for Yellowhead Copper in July 2026. No s. 6 agreements had been signed. That is 4–8 year mining, environmental-assessment and Indigenous-law demand through 2026 permitting and 2027 construction — MAG Legal Services Branch included.

Teck and Anglo American announced a merger of equals on 9 September 2025 with global headquarters in Vancouver. The Government of Canada issued Investment Canada Act approval on 15 December 2025. Binding perpetual commitments include the Anglo Teck name, a global headquarters in Canada, and a significant majority of senior management in Canada, including the CEO, Deputy CEO and CFO. Time-limited spend: at least CAD 4.5 billion in Canada within 5 years, enabling at least CAD 10 billion over 15 years, plus named mine, Trail, Galore Creek and Schaft Creek packages. The published close window is 12–18 months from the September 2025 announcement — roughly September 2026 to March 2027. Canadian competition approval was already in hand; other jurisdictions remained outstanding. The in-house seat this creates is a chief legal and sustainability officer and a corporate-counsel bench at a Vancouver global HQ, not a first-year lockstep expansion.

Competition Act C-59 amendments received royal assent on 20 June 2024; private access to the Tribunal for deceptive marketing and civil anti-competitive agreements came into force on 20 June 2025. The Bureau’s Merger Intelligence and Notification Unit recorded 247 notification and ARC filings in FY 2024–25, +31 percent versus 200, with a 41 percent complex share and average complex review of 44.46 days. The Investment Canada Act annual report 2024–25 recorded 1,138 filings, 30 extended national-security reviews, and an average extended NS review of 155 days. Resources were 3.2 percent of filing count but 28.3 percent of enterprise value. Those are national series. Anglo Teck is the Vancouver-HQ specimen of that inbound-review book.

Canada–U.S. talks were suspended on 22 August 2026. CBSA Customs Notice 26-23, dated 7 September 2026, applies the United States Surtax Order (2026) from 8 September 2026 at 15, 25 or 50 percent of value for duty. The Prime Minister named pulp and paper among the concentrated measures. Immediate demand is international trade, customs, and forest-products origin work at Vancouver full-service firms and in-house at exporters — 3–7 year specialists. Legal 500 Canada’s 2026 editor’s notes already recorded PE and M&A delayed by tariff uncertainty while mining remained strong around the Anglo–Teck announcement; treat that as respondent-firm color, not a Vancouver hiring census.

Housing supply statutes are already in force. Bill 44 required zoning bylaws adopted on or after 30 June 2024 to permit small-scale multi-family housing; B.C. Reg. 152/2024 brought specified Local Government Act and Vancouver Charter sections into force on 18 June 2024. Speculation and Vacancy Tax rates for 2026 are 3 percent and 1 percent, rising to 4 percent and 1 percent from 1 January 2027, on the Province rates page updated 3 July 2026. The 2024 tax year raised CAD 79.6 million, per the Ministry of Finance on 18 December 2025. BC Hydro’s 2026/27–2028/29 Service Plan winds Site C down after the sixth and final generating unit entered service in August 2025 (approved budget CAD 16 billion) while the North Coast Transmission Line is not yet Board-approved for Implementation. The early-2024 10-year capital plan still used in the F26–F27 revenue-requirements application estimated CAD 36 billion excluding Site C. Municipal, real-estate-tax, power and Indigenous desks stay busy. They do not, by themselves, re-price a first-year lockstep.

Capital that prices mining and securities seats is Vancouver-heavy on issuer count, not on raised dollars. TMX’s MiG Report for December 2025 recorded CAD 33.3 billion of equity capital raised on TSX and TSXV (+60 percent versus 2024), with mining about CAD 16 billion of that raise. British Columbia hosted 937 listed-company headquarters (26 percent of issuers, 8 percent of market cap) against Ontario’s 1,911. Crosbie & Company’s Q1 2026 Canadian M&A report counted 680 announced transactions and CAD 76 billion of aggregate value, with Ontario at 171 Canadian-target deals; British Columbia’s provincial deal count is not printed on that page and is omitted. CVCA Intelligence recorded 17 British Columbia private-equity deals totaling CAD 135.3 million in Q1 2026, with Vancouver at 6 deals and CAD 11.5 million. The B.C. Securities Commission’s FY 2024–25 statements, signed in Vancouver on 9 June 2025, show prospectus and other distributions revenue of CAD 42,954,061 and assessed enforcement sanctions of CAD 23.9 million. The Court of Appeal for British Columbia’s 2025 annual report counted 957 new appeals, up almost 20 percent from 788 in 2024, including 766 new civil appeals. Appellate volume is not counsel hours billed; it is the Vancouver registry’s docket sitting under the disputes bench.

Match the desk the docket is buying, not the Bay Street cell the candidate screens.

07 How a search closes

The Toronto envelope is the firm fact. Vancouver is the geo.

Sartori has worked the Canadian associate market for 8 years. Over the trailing three years the Toronto associate desk closed 23 searches at a 93 percent completion rate, with a median of 8 working days from offer to signature and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

Sartori maps about 5,000 lawyers in Toronto, the Canadian envelope this Vancouver page sits on. Quarterly market surveys have run since 2019 against a global mapping of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles.

Across 250 structured interviews with Toronto associates and in-house counsel, 67 of 84 respondents who had priced a Vancouver seat against a Toronto seat over a 24-month window named a CAD 15,000–20,000 cash gap as the figure a general counsel had to close before they would leave a Bay Street cell. Of those 84, 41 sat inside corporate legal departments — general counsel, chief legal officer, VP Legal, head of legal. Twenty-nine of those 41 said they would match a posted 3–5 year Vancouver business-law band before they would match a Toronto seventh-year base.

A general counsel at a Vancouver-headquartered diversified miner told us, in that same 24-month cut, that she would match CAD 145,000–185,000 for a 3–5 year corporate counsel hire before she would match CAD 275,000. A head of legal at a provincial Crown utility said the PEA Level 2 band is the number she uses when a firm associate asks to come in-house, not the Globe’s Toronto cells.

Mandate telemetry on the same desk records 23 closed associate searches over three years. Of those 23, 11 were mining, corporate or securities seats where the client compared a Vancouver posting to a Toronto one. Counter-offer incidence on the full 23-file book is 36 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 8 working days. Eight of the 23 ran past 10 weeks when the company tried to import a Toronto lockstep cell onto a Vancouver mining or corporate seat.

The finding that does not flatter us: 6 of those 23 closed files required a second verification of the candidate’s current cash, because the first figure they gave was a Toronto lockstep cell they did not actually hold. Our own 11 Vancouver-compared files are too thin to mint a downtown first-year grid, and we do not. A page that published one from this book would be inventing the cell NALP left in the paid report.

The credential gate the associate must clear is an LSBC practicing license: a Canadian JD or LLB or an NCA Certificate of Qualification, nine months of articles or a clerkship, the training course, a Bencher interview, and a six-hour Practice Management Course, all inside a 24-month admission period under Rule 2-76. PREP, run by CPLED, replaces PLTC from September 2026; the first B.C. cohort is the Fall Accelerated PREP intake, and in 2027 all new B.C. students are expected to enroll in PREP. A Toronto (or Calgary) called lawyer can be put on a Vancouver seat without re-articling if National Mobility Agreement rules are met; in-house counsel transferring to B.C. may be exempted from examinations or the reading requirement. That is how a general counsel matching a Vancouver figure can hire a Bay Street call without waiting out articles.

Bank of Canada overnight target was held at 2.25 percent through 2 September 2026 after cuts on 17 September 2025 and 29 October 2025. Cheaper money is a backdrop. It does not, by itself, create a 2026 Vancouver associate-class expansion, and it does not license anyone to infer a grid from a policy rate.

Companies building or restaffing a Vancouver legal function should start the conversation on the in-house counsel recruiting desk or, for a first general counsel, the first general counsel guide. Associates comparing private-practice cash to a company offer should read the private practice versus in-house salary guide after they have priced this city’s cells. The national Canada table lives on its own URL; the Toronto table lives on its own URL. This page owns the Vancouver contrast only.

Lawyer pay in Vancouver: questions from both sides of the offer letter

What is the lawyer salary Vancouver figure a general counsel should budget in 2026?

Budget CAD 115,000 — NALP's Western Canada first-year median as of 1 January 2025 (USD 83,201). Do not start from Toronto's CAD 130,000 city median or the Globe and Mail's 4 March 2025 Toronto top-tier CAD 135,000 cell. A 3–5 year Vancouver business-law associate was posted at CAD 145,000–185,000 on 27 April 2026. NALP's paid report names Vancouver as a city market; the public bulletin does not print that city median.

How much do lawyers make in Vancouver versus Toronto in 2026?

Western Canada first-year median is CAD 115,000 against Toronto's CAD 130,000 as of 1 January 2025. That CAD 15,000 gap is USD 83,201 versus USD 94,053 at the Bank of Canada 10 September 2026 rate. Occupation-wide, Job Bank's Lower Mainland–Southwest median is CAD 66.65/hour against Toronto Region CAD 69.74, updated 19 November 2025. Toronto's March 2025 top-tier seventh-year base of about CAD 275,000 is a Bay Street cell with no Vancouver match on that page.

What does a Vancouver in-house legal department actually pay against those associate cells?

Crown Counsel Level 1 starts at CAD 124,213.51 on 1 April 2026; Level 3 reaches CAD 263,131.20. PEA Legal Counsel Level 2 (6–11 years of call) runs CAD 162,136.65–210,269.74 from 5 April 2026. A general counsel matching a mid-level corporate seat can also read the 27 April 2026 Vancouver posting at CAD 145,000–185,000. Legal Aid BC's 1 April 2026 Tier 1 tariff is CAD 136.87/hour — a roster fee, not a W-2.

Is attorney salary Vancouver the same as the U.S. 2026 lockstep?

No. The U.S. first-year floor is USD 235,000, about CAD 324,817 at 1.3822. Above the Law's 5 June 2026 scorecard recorded Milbank's 2 June 2026 move through USD 455,000. That U.S. floor is more than double the Globe's Toronto CAD 135,000 cell and nearly triple NALP's Western Canada CAD 115,000 median.

Which Vancouver legal seats is the 2026 paycheck actually buying?

Mining M&A, Indigenous, in-house corporate at a Vancouver headquarters, MAG and Crown-utility counsel, trade, and municipal housing — mid-level to senior. Anglo Teck's Investment Canada Act approval on 15 December 2025 locked a Vancouver global headquarters with a 12–18 month close from 9 September 2025. Gitxaala (2025 BCCA 430) and the 8 September 2026 United States surtaxes sit on the same hiring year.

How long does Sartori take to close a Canadian associate search that prices a Vancouver seat?

Typical time-to-fill is 6 to 12 weeks on 23 closed searches at 93 percent completion. Median offer-to-signature is 8 working days; counter-offer incidence is 36 percent. Of those 23 files, 8 ran past 10 weeks when the company tried to import a Toronto lockstep cell onto a Vancouver mining or corporate seat.

A quiet conversation

Matching a Vancouver legal seat in CAD and USD?

We price the desk the 2026 docket is actually buying — mining, Indigenous, in-house corporate at a Vancouver headquarters, MAG and Crown-utility counsel — and we will say when a Toronto cell does not belong on the offer. Confidential, no obligation.
