Mayer Brown salary 2026: the posted first-year is not closing the search companies actually have

The firm still prints a $225,000 U.S. first-year. That is the dated number a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal should open on — and then decide whether matching it is the right instrument for a finance or investigations mid-level, or whether the work stays on the panel.

Open on the posted first-year. Then decide whether it can close the seat.

A Chicago general counsel pricing Mayer Brown nq salary against an in-house offer is not looking up a national lockstep. Sartori maps roughly 13,000 lawyers in Chicago; the question that actually closes an offer is whether matching this firm's still-posted U.S. first-year is the right bid for a finance or investigations mid-level, or the wrong one.

Lens 01 · Campus print The posted first-year is a campus product, not a mid-level bid.

Mayer Brown’s student FAQ, accessed 11 September 2026, still prices summer associates off a $225,000 first-year annualized base, $4,327 a week. The Americas page prices the 2027 summer class off the same number. A years-four private-credit hire is not that product. Wrong seniority. Keep the panel or raise the band.

The dated number is $225,000 in the U.S. and £150,000 in London. The decision is whether that number is a salary, a sign-on, or a panel rate. The public cash is tabulated below.

Mayer Brown nq salary is a campus print, not a mid-level bid

Mayer Brown has not published a 2026 class-by-class U.S. base table. What a general counsel can actually cite is the careers-page first-year, a 2025 bonus memo with parseable endpoints, a London NQ exclusive, and a 2023 full-grid match that has not been superseded in public.

Chicago still prices this firm’s first-year on a printed number. Mayer Brown’s student FAQ, accessed 11 September 2026, states that summer associate compensation is based on the annualized salary of a first-year associate, currently $225,000, paid biweekly at $4,327 a week. The Americas recruiting page, accessed the same day, says the firm anticipates compensation for U.S. summer associates in 2027 will be based on an annualized salary of $225,000, paid biweekly on Fridays. Neither page lists years 2 through 8. Neither states a 1 July 2026 effective date for a new grid.

The last page that prints Mayer Brown’s full eight-year U.S. base table is Above the Law’s 2023 scorecard, recording a 30 November 2023 match for all U.S. offices: class of 2023 $225,000 through class of 2016 $435,000. Year-end bonuses in that compilation ran from $15,000 prorated for the class of 2023 through $115,000 for the class of 2016 and senior, with hours at 1,900 client-equivalent hours in New York and 2,000 hours outside New York, paid 16 February 2024. Treat those endpoints as the last public lockstep, not as a 2026 class-year payroll. Intermediate 2023 rungs were not extracted as text from that tracker and are omitted here.

Class years on the bonus rows are the labels on the 17 December 2025 memo, not 2026 graduation years. Two consecutive rows on that memo are both labeled 2023; they are not in this table. The 2026 market lockstep lives on our 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale page.

Where £150,000 sat in the London NQ stack on 29 September 2025. Mayer Brown is tied with the Magic Circle and sits below the U.S. London cluster. The Firms Most List average is a different population.

Legal Cheek, Money talks, 29 September 2025; Mayer Brown exclusive 31 July 2025.

The 2026 market lockstep is a different instrument, and a sibling page owns it. Milbank announced a $235,000 to $455,000 scale on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026. Biglaw Investor’s historical table, accessed 11 September 2026, lists that 2026 first-year through eighth-year, with year-end bonus $20,000 to $115,000 and a $6,000 first-year special, for an illustrated first-year total of $256,000. The 2025 scale on the same table is $225,000 to $435,000. Above the Law’s summer scorecard, first posted 5 June 2026 and carrying August 2026 matches, lists Milbank, McDermott, Quinn Emanuel, Katten, Sullivan & Cromwell, Norton Rose Fulbright and others. Mayer Brown is absent. A general counsel who prices an October 2026 offer against a guessed $235,000 first-year is not reading this firm’s last public number.

London cash is a second ledger. Legal Cheek’s 31 July 2025 exclusive put newly qualified associates at £150,000 from that date, an 11 percent / £15,000 uplift from £135,000, bringing the Chicago-founded firm in line with the Magic Circle on NQ pay. The firm FAQ does not publish an NQ figure; it publishes trainee pay of £56,000 in year one and £61,000 at the start of year two, a vacation scheme at £650 a week, an SQE maintenance grant of £20,000, a PGDL grant of £15,000, and a £5,000 interest-free loan. The solicitor apprenticeship starts at £30,000 with a £3,000 welcome bonus and matches the trainee cohort in years 5 and 6. German entry-level associate pay rose by a mean of €30,000 to a maximum of €155,000 from 1 January 2025, with bonus eligibility from year one, on a 21 October 2024 German-language announcement. Brazil intern cash of R$21,600 to R$44,400 is a stipend band, not associate pay.

03 Who hires now

The live NQ seats are finance, investigations and restructuring

The lawyers who earn the printed scale sit first on Mayer Brown's own desks. When they leave, the buyers are other firms and, later, in-house desks at banks, insurers, private-credit platforms and infrastructure sponsors. A generic corporate Attorney seat is the wrong label.

London autumn 2026 newly qualified placements by department. Eight of nine qualifiers were retained. This is one round, not the Legal Cheek 80 percent 'latest' retention print, which is a different vintage.

The Lawyer live trainee-retention log, 25 August 2026 entry.

The Lawyer’s live trainee-retention log, entry dated 25 August 2026, recorded that Mayer Brown retained eight of nine autumn qualifiers: three into finance, three into litigation regulatory enforcement, one into restructuring, and one into corporate (employment). Legal Cheek’s firm profile, accessed 11 September 2026, lists 15 training contracts and a latest trainee retention rate of 80 percent. Those two percentages are different rounds. Do not collapse them. The SRA still requires a degree or level-6 equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and suitability checks; the firm maps that onto a two-year, four-seat training contract with SQE at BPP University before the contract starts.

Banking and finance is the signature seat, not a general GC office. The firm’s Banking & Finance overview, accessed 11 September 2026, states that advising the world’s financial services industry on complex matters is Mayer Brown’s signature strength, that the firm serves more than half of the world’s largest banks, and that it is recognized as a global market leader in structured finance. Product labels on that page include asset finance, CDOs and CLOs, derivatives, energy finance, fund finance, global trade finance, green and sustainable finance, projects and infrastructure, lending, leveraged and acquisition finance, private credit, real estate finance and structured finance, plus financial-institutions M&A, restructuring, and financial-services regulatory and enforcement. Those are the labels a head of legal should put on a requisition if the candidate’s book is Mayer Brown-shaped.

Chambers UK 2026 ranks 27 departments. London firms: Band 2 Leveraged Finance, Lenders, Mid-Market; Band 2 Real Estate £150 million-plus; Band 3 Corporate/M&A £100–800 million; Band 3 Restructuring/Insolvency; Band 1 Construction, Contentious and Construction, Professional Negligence. UK-wide: Band 1 Asset-Based Lending; Band 2 Capital Markets, CLOs and Derivatives; Band 3 Securitisation, Structured Products, Pensions and Private Equity buyouts up to £500 million; Band 4 Capital Markets, Debt. The ABL department page describes clients as banks and alternative lenders across retail, automotive and shipping. Construction, real estate and pensions sit on the London platform; they are neighboring desks, not this page’s open.

Private credit is a named, hiring-facing desk. The Private Credit page describes a one-stop shop for private-credit funds on agency and lender work, workouts, structuring, back leverage and regulatory work, with sub-desks in fund formation, fund finance (a database of more than 8,000 distinct investors), direct lending, permanent-capital vehicles and structured finance including middle-market CLOs. Hybrid Capital covers lenders, credit funds and institutional investors on unitranche, second-lien, mezzanine, preferred equity, PIK HoldCo, FILO/LIFO and PIPEs. Non-Billable, 27 April 2026, counted eight London lateral partner hires in 2025 across private equity, leveraged finance, structured finance and energy — the same labels.

Insurance is a parallel buyer industry seated in structured finance and capital markets. The Insurance Capital Markets page represents issuers and underwriters on surplus notes and hybrid capital; named insurer and reinsurer issuers on that page and a November 2024 forum pack include Nationwide, Allstate, Chubb, State Farm, Everest Re, CNA and Beazley. The ILS page cites 30 catastrophe-bond offerings in the last two years, raising more than $7 billion in risk capital, with public-body buyers including New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance Company. Life and reinsurance work includes XXX/AXXX reserve financing and a $2 billion letter-of-credit facility for a Prudential captive. These are the in-house desks — insurer general counsel, capital-markets counsel, investment-legal — that later hire the associates who learned the product at the firm.

Projects and Infrastructure lists more than 80 lawyers advising sponsors, lenders and public bodies from New York, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Houston, Dubai and Rio. Asset classes include conventional and renewable energy, transportation, communications (cell towers, data centers, broadband, fiber) and social infrastructure. The FY2025 reprint named an $11 billion SR400 Express Lanes close in Atlanta and Standard Chartered as senior lender on a clean-energy infrastructure financing joint venture with Apollo. The in-house counterparts sit in sponsor legal, bank project-finance legal, and public-authority or multilateral legal — not in a county land-use office.

Investigations and white-collar defense represents corporations, boards and executives before the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the CFTC, state attorneys general, the UK Serious Fraud Office, France’s AFA, Hong Kong’s MA and SFC, and MAS. An October 2025 brochure puts the bench at 150-plus investigations lawyers. Chambers Global ranked the firm for FCPA 2022 through 2026. This desk is hiring at NQ in London, not only at partner in Chicago.

Matching the campus print is how a general counsel loses a years-four finance hire.
On the in-house instrument
04 Who pays it

Three company desks write a check against this figure. Everyone else buys the panel.

The payer is a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal at a bank, an insurer, a private-credit platform or an infrastructure sponsor. NALP's Class of 2025 census is why a company cannot fill this seat by recruiting the campus class.

The payer is a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who must either match the figure or keep Mayer Brown on the panel.

  • Bank legal desks buy the signature product. The firm serves more than half of the world’s largest banks. Legal Cheek names Lloyds, HSBC and Wells Fargo among prior secondment employers, alongside London Stock Exchange Group, Unilever and British Land. Those names are types: UK clearing banks, a U.S. bank, an exchange group, a global consumer-goods issuer, a UK REIT. They are the GC and legal-ops desks that already know the juniors.
  • Insurer investment-legal needs 2026 statutory private-credit disclosures staffed. NAIC’s April 2026 issue brief put U.S. insurer CLO holdings at $276.8 billion at year-end 2024. Beginning with 2026 reporting, more granular private-placement disclosures apply. That is a mid-level insurance-capital-markets or investment-legal hire, not a first-year match.
  • Sponsor and public-body legal sit on energy-credit transfer and large-load interconnection. Public Law 119-21, 4 July 2025, plus IRS Notice 2025-42, put a 4 July 2026 beginning-of-construction deadline on wind and solar 45Y and 48E credits. FERC Docket RM26-4, directed 23 October 2025, is the large-load interconnection docket, generally above 20 MW. Name the clock; the mechanics of another docket belong to a different page.

The earner is on a posted first-year, a last public 2023 grid, a 2025 bonus memo, then counsel, then an equity average that is not a second scale.

  • U.S. associates enter through office-level summer key practice areas on the Americas page: Chicago names Corporate and Securities, Banking and Finance, IP, Litigation, Real Estate, Restructuring and Tax; New York adds those finance and restructuring desks; Washington lists cybersecurity and data privacy, antitrust, global investigations and white-collar, international trade and public policy among the litigation labels. Experienced laterals apply year-round with a resume and transcript. 3L first-year applications are taken only if an opening is listed.
  • London NQs sit on an SRA-gated, four-seat training contract. Legal Cheek still lists newly qualified salary at £150,000. The same profile records no published annual target hours and a 2026–27 survey-derived client-secondment probability of 9 percent. Editorial language on that profile that NQs are frequently targeted by U.S. and Magic Circle rivals is anecdote, not a counted outflow. The pay stack is the mechanism: 18 U.S. London shops above £170,000 versus Magic Circle £150,000.
  • Frankfurt laterals are a different credential. A 2026 Frankfurt Banking and Finance associate advert asks for relevant professional experience, ideally at leading firms, particularly financing advice and credit financings. That is not a U.S. first-year print and not a London NQ.

NALP’s Employment for the Class of 2025: Selected Findings, published 5 August 2026 with a status date of 16 March 2026, put overall employment at 92.8 percent and bar-admission-required or anticipated jobs at 84.6 percent, an all-time high. Private practice took 60.9 percent of jobs; business 6.7 percent; public interest 9.0 percent; other government 10.9 percent; judicial clerkships 10.0 percent. Firms of more than 500 lawyers were the single largest employer of new law graduates, accounting for more than one in five employed graduates; adding 251–500-lawyer firms, approximately one in every four employed graduates now begins practice in large-firm private practice. Private practice lost more than 940 entry-level positions versus the prior class. Business-sector employment fell to its lowest level in 35 years. Federal employment fell 37 percent; public interest 14 percent. Implication for this page: companies that cannot fill a Mayer Brown-trained finance or investigations seat at the 2026 posted salary are competing for mid-levels, not for campus NQs.

The lateral market around that campus class is not a Chicago boom. NALP’s May 2026 Bulletin+ put U.S. law-firm lateral hiring up 16.4 percent in 2025 (3,535 laterals in 305 offices); associate laterals up 17.1 percent and 58.2 percent of all laterals. Firms of 1,001 or more lawyers remained the volume engine, with firm-wide reports averaging 62.4 associate laterals, even though their associate growth rate of 13.0 percent lagged smaller firms. The Midwest region saw overall laterals down 9.8 percent in 2025. Twenty-two percent of offices recruited 3Ls, up from 14 percent; 180 3L offers, 161 accepted (89.4 percent). The reference city is Chicago. A company recruiting from this firm’s Chicago class is bidding in a region where laterals contracted, against a scale-setting rival that announced a Chicago office on 24 August 2026.

Of the Chicago interview cohort, 94 structured interviews over a 24-month window were with general counsel, chief legal officers or heads of legal at banks, insurers, private-credit platforms or infrastructure sponsors who had priced a Mayer Brown-shaped finance or investigations hire. Sixty-one of those 94 said they would not close a years 4 through 6 hire by matching the posted first-year; the bid that moved was total compensation at counsel or VP Legal, or the file stayed on the panel. In the same cohort, 78 Chicago associates in years 3 through 6, over an 18-month window, named the $225,000 campus print as the number companies quote in a first conversation and then lose them on. A general counsel at a Chicago private-credit platform put the sponsor version in one line: matching a first-year print would not clear a years-five unitranche lawyer the fund had already approved as a headcount.

In-house seat against the last public Mayer Brown cash and the 2026 work that actually moved. The bid column is a rule of thumb from the Chicago associate-line cohort, not a payroll promise.

05 Bonus and PEP

The 2025 bonus is a dated memo. PEP is not a salary.

Year-end cash is the part of associate pay that still moves with the cycle. Partner economics are a different instrument: an Am Law average, a nonequity cost pool, and a spread the firm declined to print.

A PDF memorandum “To: U.S. Associates,” dated 17 December 2025, “Re: 2025 Year-End Bonuses,” hosted by Above the Law, set the class of 2025 at an annual bonus of $15,000 and a special bonus of $6,000, in each case prorated to 6 October 2025, regardless of start date. Rows that parsed cleanly: class of 2024 $20,000 / $6,000 special; class of 2021 $75,000 / $20,000; class of 2020 $90,000 / $25,000; class of 2019 $105,000 / $25,000; class of 2018 and senior $115,000 / $25,000. Eligibility sits in an Annual Bonus Policy dated 2 January 2025. Payment was expected 13 February 2026 to associates employed and in good standing on the pay date, with proration for leave, part-time, or join-after-1 January 2025 unless full-year criteria were met. Cravath opened the same 2025 market grid on 18 November 2025, as Above the Law’s 26 November 2025 bonus tracker records. This page prints Mayer Brown’s own memo endpoints and stops.

The 2024 cycle was a match plus an overlay. Above the Law, 27 November 2024, reported that Mayer Brown matched the then-prevailing year-end and special-bonus scale and again offered additional bonuses on top for its highest billers. The HTML page does not reproduce that numeric grid. The 2023 cycle, compiled in the December 2023 tracker, is the last full bonus-plus-hours print: New York 1,900 client-equivalent hours; outside New York 2,000 hours for the base bonus. Do not import the 2023 hours onto the 2025 memo. The 2022 story is timing: Above the Law, 8 March 2022, recorded the firm’s first modern-scale Cravath match after not matching Milbank in January or Davis Polk in February, with new salaries in accounts on 1 April, retroactive to 1 January.

Partner economics are public through Am Law, not through a partner salary scale. The firm’s March 2026 reprint of The American Lawyer put FY2025 revenue at $2.17 billion, up nearly 10 percent; average profits per partner up 14.5 percent to $3.196 million; the equity tier up 4.1 percent to about 239; a slight decline in lawyer headcount; RPL up 11.6 percent to $1.25 million; net income up 19.2 percent to $762.5 million. Rates grew by more than 10 percent. Hours billed were around 2.8 million against 2.91 million the year before. Clients billed: 6,316 in 2025 versus 7,600 in 2024. Legal Business, 27 March 2026, repeats $2.17 billion, $762.5 million net income, PEP $3.196 million, equity 239, and prior-year revenue $1.98 billion. Above the Law, 15 April 2026, summarizing the 2026 Am Law 100, put cohort PEP up 14 percent in 2025 and RPL up 8.7 percent. Mayer Brown’s published $2.17 billion sits below the top-10 gross-revenue floor of Simpson Thacher’s $3.553 billion on that page; the published RPL of $1.25 million sits below Cravath’s $2.255 million tenth-place RPL print; the published PEP of $3.196 million sits below Milbank’s $7.620 million tenth-place PEP print. Exact 2026 Am Law rank was not printed on the pages and is omitted.

The FY2024 reprint, April 2025, is the prior rung: revenue up 3.9 percent to more than $1.98 billion; PEP up 14.3 percent to nearly $2.8 million; a 9.9 percent dip in equity partners and a 6.6 percent drop in head count overall; RPL up 11.3 percent to $1.1 million; hours billed from about 2.8 million to 2.9 million; average compensation for all partners up 11 percent to about $1.5 million. Headcount decline was attributed largely to the Hong Kong (Johnson Stokes & Master) and Mexico City spin-outs; Hong Kong retained more than 20 lawyers, printed as 21 in the FY2025 interview, with Singapore 41 and Tokyo 13. London printed at about 264 lawyers. Legal Business, 30 April 2026, put London revenue at $268.2 million in 2025, a 20 percent spike; Non-Billable, 27 April 2026, put the same $268.2 million up 20.5 percent, with 96 transatlantic deals. Legal Cheek states London revenues jumping 20.5 percent to a record $268.2 million (£199 million) and City headcount rose to 264 lawyers. Do not invent a global 2025 total from those office prints.

The UK statutory filing is pay distribution, not NQ or PEP. Mayer Brown International LLP’s UK Gender Pay Gap Report 2024 put the mean gender pay gap at 18.3 percent (from 19.3 percent in 2023), the median at 32.1 percent (from 39.2 percent), the mean bonus gap at 34.5 percent (from 51.8 percent) and the median bonus gap at 17.9 percent (from 69.8 percent). Bonus receipt printed 41.7 percent / 41.1 percent. Lower quartiles were described as reflective of a significantly higher number of female employees in Business Services and Secretarial roles. That filing does not disclose associate or partner cash bands.

PEP is an average, not a partner paycheck and not an in-house bid.

The 2026 rules rewrote the mid-level. They did not rewrite the FAQ.

Demand for the finance, private-credit, insurance, infrastructure and investigations associate is being rewritten by dated 2025–26 instruments. None of those clocks is closed by matching Magic Circle £150,000 or posting $225,000.

Executive Order 14209, 10 February 2025, directed the Attorney General, for 180 days, to cease new FCPA investigations or enforcement actions unless an individual exception was made. The Deputy Attorney General’s 9 June 2025 memorandum, “Guidelines for Investigations and Enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act,” restarted new matters on authorization by the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, with non-exhaustive factors including cartel and transnational-criminal-organization nexus, deprivation of fair access or economic injury to identifiable U.S. entities, bribery involving key infrastructure or assets, and serious misconduct with strong indicia of corrupt intent. Mayer Brown’s December 2025 client alert covering DOJ’s 10 November 2025 announcement put Comunicaciones Celulares S.A. (TIGO Guatemala) at over $118 million under a two-year deferred prosecution agreement — $60 million criminal penalty plus $58.2 million administrative forfeiture — a 50 percent reduction from the bottom of the guidelines range, and stated the outcome closely tracks the June 2025 guidelines. Hiring consequence: investigations associates who can staff a DPA remain scarce relative to a first-year $225,000 print. Companies buying that seat from Mayer Brown are matching investigations experience, not the NQ grid.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in National Association of Private Fund Managers v. SEC, No. 23-60471, vacated the private-fund adviser final rule on 5 June 2024, holding no part of it can stand. The SEC’s 31 October 2024 announcement listed the vacated new rules: private-fund audits, quarterly statements, restricted activities, adviser-led secondaries and preferential treatment, plus vacated amendments to books-and-records and compliance procedures. Hiring consequence: the 2023–24 build-out of a prescriptive private-fund compliance program is off. Mayer Brown’s fund-formation and private-credit desks still document more than 8,000 investors and side letters. Mid-level funds counsel who can negotiate LPA and side-letter packages stay scarce. The vacatur does not create NQ volume.

Directive (EU) 2024/927 of 13 March 2024 — AIFMD II — applies from 16 April 2026, with supervisory reporting on 16 April 2027. Recital 13 treats AIFs originating loans as a source of alternative SME finance and calls for common rules given the fast-growing private credit market. London and Frankfurt Banking and Finance and Private Credit associates who can re-paper EU credit funds, warehouses and back-leverage by that date are the scarce band. UK AIFMs are not automatically in scope; the work still hits a U.S. firm’s London finance platform that documented 96 transatlantic deals in 2025. Name the application date; the mechanics of another country’s AIFM law belong to a different page.

NAIC’s April 2026 issue brief, “How State Insurance Regulators are Responding to Growth in CLOs and Private Credit,” put U.S. insurer CLO holdings at $276.8 billion at year-end 2024, about 2 percent up on 2023, 5.1 percent of total bonds and 3.1 percent of cash and invested assets, with life insurers 82 percent of that stock and insurers with more than $10 billion in assets 82 percent of exposure. About 80 percent of holdings were investment-grade, 39 percent AAA. Measures already in force include the principles-based bond definition effective 1 January 2025, a 45 percent RBC charge on CLO residual tranches for life, AG 53 asset-adequacy testing and AG 55 for asset-intensive annuity reinsurance. Beginning with 2026 reporting: more granular private-placement disclosures. Filing-exempt process changes took effect 1 January 2026. A chief legal officer at a life insurer, interviewed in the Chicago cohort, described the 2026 disclosure wave as a mid-level statutory-accounting problem, not an NQ requisition.

The Federal Reserve, OCC and FDIC, on 19 March 2026, requested comment on proposals to modernize the regulatory capital framework and anticipated that the amount of overall capital in the banking system would modestly decrease, with comments due 18 June 2026. The agencies formally rescinded the July 2023 Basel III Endgame package. The 27 March 2026 Federal Register proposed rule revises standardized-approach risk weights particularly material to lending activities. This is not yet a final rule. Do not treat it as in force. Fund-finance and bank-side leveraged-lending associates see more bank balance-sheet capacity if it is finalized; direct-lending and hybrid-capital associates see a possible bank re-entry into middle-market corporate loans. Seniority: mid-level to counsel who have documented both bank and non-bank credit.

IRS Notice 2025-42, released 15 August 2025, implements Public Law 119-21 of 4 July 2025: for the beginning-of-construction test, the Physical Work Test is the sole method except a narrow low-output solar exception, and the 5 percent safe harbor is generally eliminated for this purpose. Wind and solar 45Y and 48E credits terminate for applicable facilities placed in service after 31 December 2027 unless construction begins by 4 July 2026. Section 6418 transferability remains in force under IRS FAQs updated through 22 July 2024 and Publication 5884 (Rev. 7-2026). Hiring consequence: Projects and Infrastructure, Energy Finance and Tax associates through mid-2026, with a compressed physical-work documentation wave in the first half of 2026. Reuters, 1 July 2026, citing LSEG, put announced global M&A at $2.8 trillion in the first six months, up 48 percent year on year, the highest year-to-date since 1980, with deal count down 9 percent to 24,000 and investment-grade corporate debt issues at $3.4 trillion, up 10 percent. Mega-deal concentration does not scale NQ leverage.

07 How we price it

The Chicago associate desk that has to make the bid survive

Sartori has worked the Chicago associate market for 8 years, for companies hiring finance, investigations and infrastructure counsel off Am Law platforms and for the firms that train them. Over the trailing three years we closed 26 associate searches on this line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6 to 12 week timeline.

Mandate telemetry is a smaller unit than that interview cohort. Of 26 closed Chicago associate searches over three years, 14 were finance, private-credit or investigations laterals in years 3 through 6. Eight of those 14 completed on the first brief. Six of the 14 required a second specification because the company had copied the campus first-year onto a mid-level requisition; those six still closed, but they ran 11 to 16 weeks, at or past the outer edge of the 6 to 12 week band. We are slower where a company tries to copy the FAQ onto a VP range that will not hold it. That is the finding that does not flatter the easy story.

Across those 26 searches we extended 31 offers. Eleven of those 31 drew a counter-offer, which is the 35 percent incidence this Chicago associate line carries. Median offer-to-acceptance was 11 working days. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 is the instrument behind the qualitative read that in-house buyers of finance and investigations talent have been opening more often with a total-compensation conversation and less often with a campus-print match; the interview cut in the match-window section is the numbered base for that claim.

What the telemetry cannot see is an unpublished internal scale. We can price a posted first-year, a last public 2023 grid and a 2025 bonus memo. We cannot audit a 1 July 2026 match that has not been announced. A search that “matches Mayer Brown” on the FAQ and leaves the mid-level band for later is the search that needed a second brief six times in this set. Chicago mapping records advertised pay and class year. It does not record unpublished lockstep memos, because no public register does.

Two composites from this line, described by category only. A private-credit platform needed a years-five direct-lending counsel who could paper unitranche and a subscription line. The first bid copied the $225,000 campus print. The file moved when total first-year cash was put on a VP Legal band; it closed in 10 weeks, inside the 6 to 12 week band, with an 11-day signature. A life-insurer investment-legal desk asked to staff 2026 NAIC private-placement disclosures with an NQ. The company proceeded, took a firm-side counter-offer, and signed in 11 working days after the brief was rewritten as a mid-level statutory-accounting seat. The completed file does not make the first bid a good one. We said so at the briefing.

U.S. associates on this platform are a JD-and-transcript seat. London NQs are an SQE solicitor with two years’ qualifying work experience. A company that writes one requisition for both has not opened one search. Google Ads Keyword Planner, four-country extract dated 11 September 2026, recorded 240 monthly searches for the string this page answers. The volume is real; the published U.S. first-year is still $225,000.

Mayer Brown compensation: questions from both sides of the offer

What is Mayer Brown nq salary in 2026?

The firm still posts a $225,000 U.S. first-year and summer-associate annualized base. London newly qualified base is £150,000 from 31 July 2025. Neither figure is a 2026 U.S. class-year grid. The Americas careers page, accessed 11 September 2026, still prices the 2027 summer class off $225,000. A general counsel who copies that campus print onto a years-four finance or investigations hire is matching the wrong seniority.

Did Mayer Brown match the 2026 Milbank associate scale?

No public Mayer Brown match sat on Above the Law’s 2026 summer scorecard through late August 2026. Milbank announced a $235,000–$455,000 scale on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026. A 24 August 2026 Above the Law article named Mayer Brown among Chicago incumbents that had stayed quiet on the new scale. Absence from a tip-driven table is not an internal denial; it is why this page treats $225,000 as the last posted first-year, not a guessed $235,000.

What is the Mayer Brown bonus for 2025?

A 17 December 2025 U.S. associate memo matched the Cravath market grid at the endpoints this page can parse. Class of 2025 received $15,000 plus a $6,000 special, prorated to 6 October 2025; class of 2018+ received $115,000 plus $25,000. Payment was expected 13 February 2026. Two consecutive rows on that memo are both labeled 2023; those cells are omitted, not guessed. Hours sit in an Annual Bonus Policy dated 2 January 2025 that was not attached to the PDF.

What is Mayer Brown PEP, and is that partner salary?

$3.196 million for FY2025, up 14.5 percent, on the March 2026 American Lawyer reprint. Equity partners numbered about 239. PEP is firm profit divided by equity-partner count. It is not a W-2, a draw, or a number a chief legal officer can drop into an offer letter. The firm said it widened bands in 2025 and declined to comment on the exact spread; that spread is omitted here.

When should a general counsel match Mayer Brown associate pay on an in-house offer?

Do not match the posted $225,000 first-year for a campus NQ. NALP’s Class of 2025 Selected Findings, published 5 August 2026, put business-sector employment at 6.7 percent, the lowest in 35 years. Match total compensation for a years 4–6 finance, private-credit or investigations hire, or keep the firm on the panel. The 2026 rules that actually moved this seat — FCPA restart, AIFMD II, NAIC private-credit disclosures, the 4 July 2026 energy-credit clock — sit at mid-level, not on the summer poster.

What does a London newly qualified earn at Mayer Brown?

Legal Cheek reported on 31 July 2025 that London newly qualified base is £150,000, up £15,000 from £135,000. That is Magic Circle parity, still £20,000–£30,000 below the U.S. London cluster at £170,000–£180,000 on Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 table. Trainee pay is £56,000 then £61,000 on the firm FAQ. This page does not convert sterling to dollars. The in-house buyer of that NQ is a bank, insurer or sponsor legal seat, not a high-street general counsel.

Associate bases are the careers-page first-year still printed in September 2026 plus the last public full U.S. grid (30 November 2023 match). 2025 bonus figures are the 17 December 2025 memo endpoints that parsed cleanly; two rows both labeled 2023 are omitted. PEP is an Am Law average over equity partners. Absence from the summer 2026 Above the Law scorecard is not proof of a later match. London NQ is the 31 July 2025 Legal Cheek exclusive. FY2025 hours and client counts are the March 2026 reprint. They are not averaged.

Our own numbers — the Chicago interview cohort, the associate-line mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page. Global mapping coverage is the canonical ~1.5 million lawyer profiles; quarterly surveys have run since 2019.
