The 2026 table, with the year on every figure.

The person paid and the company paying are reading for different decisions. They still need the same rows.

A sanctions compliance officer salary in 2026 sits above the Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 median of $80,730 for all US compliance officers. The rows below keep the year on every figure. Public rows are wage statistics or a federal pay table. The last four rows are accepted offers on Sartori searches.

02 Who is reading

The officer and the company are pricing different risks.

The officer is comparing a letter with a current salary. The company is comparing a letter with a grade that was built for audit.

Screening queueBlock decision

  1. Analyst Clears hits the tool already scored. The grade sits near a senior operations role.
  2. Officer Owns the license-or-block call, the voluntary self-disclosure, and the correspondent-bank question.
  3. Head of desk Owns the program, the regulator meeting, and the escalation to the chief compliance officer.

Cash the letter pays Compare cash with cash

The officer weighing an offer is usually leaving a bank, a payments company, a commodity trader, or an exporter. The comparison that matters is the new base plus the target bonus against the current letter, including any counter-offer. A May 2025 occupational median does not answer that comparison.

The company writing the letter is usually a general counsel, a chief compliance officer, or a compensation manager with an internal-audit grade open on the other screen. SOC 13-2011 is the public series that contains internal auditors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes internal auditors, on the accountants and auditors profile, as employees of the organization they audit. That is the grade companies copy. It is not a sanctions desk.

Title is the wrong key. Two US senior-manager sanctions seats at banks closed in 2023–2025 at $118,000 and $124,000. The officer-level median on the five US searches is $185,000. Same word on the requisition. Different decision rights.

A compliance-officer median describes 436,400 jobs. A sanctions desk is a named decision, not that average.
On the median
03 The audit gap

Internal audit pays a different job.

The Handbook has no separate national median for an internal auditor. The comparison lives in the accountant-and-auditor series, and then in the letter the company actually wrote.

In May 2025 the median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $83,680. The median for compliance officers was $80,730. The audit occupation sits $2,950 above the compliance occupation. Inside finance and insurance the gap is wider and still modest: accountants and auditors earned $93,290, and compliance officers earned $82,310, a difference of $10,980. Both pairs are May 2025 Handbook figures.

That public gap is why a compensation committee thinks the sanctions seat can be slotted next to internal audit. The committee is comparing two large occupations. Compliance officers held 436,400 jobs in 2025. Accountants and auditors held 1,595,200. Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals, employed 35 percent of compliance officers, at a May 2025 median of $81,540. Finance and insurance employed 12 percent. Professional, scientific, and technical services employed 9 percent, healthcare and social assistance 8 percent, and manufacturing 5 percent. Healthcare and social assistance paid a May 2025 median of $72,580, under the all-industry median of $80,730. The national compliance median is weighted toward government.

Where the 436,400 compliance-officer jobs sat in 2025. Each share is of that occupation.

BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, compliance officers, 2025 employment by industry.

The gap that rejects a letter is the company’s own grade, not the $2,950. On two of the five US officer-level sanctions searches closed from January 2024 to September 2026, the first letter was priced on the internal-audit manager grade and was declined. The accepted base then sat $42,000 above that grade on the New York payments file and $48,000 above it on a US exporter file. The New York accepted base was $210,000.

Four gaps, in dollars. The first two are May 2025 differences between published BLS medians. The second two are the amount by which an accepted sanctions base exceeded the internal-audit grade in the first letter.

04 The federal band

A Washington GS-14 already clears the compliance tenth.

Private-sector sanctions pay is not a GS salary. The GS table is the only published specialist schedule a board can open without a vendor.

Salary Table 2026-DCB, for the Washington-Baltimore-Arlington locality, incorporates a 1 percent General Schedule increase and a locality payment of 33.94 percent, effective January 2026. GS-14 step 1 is $143,913. GS-14 step 10 is $187,093. GS-15 steps 6 through 10 are capped at $197,200, the rate for Level IV of the Executive Schedule.

In May 2025 the highest 10 percent of US compliance officers earned more than $133,720. A GS-14 step 1 salary of $143,913, effective January 2026, sits above that threshold. The highest 10 percent of accountants and auditors earned more than $144,090. GS-14 step 1 sits just under that audit threshold. Neither figure is a Head of Sanctions at a bank.

The exposure the private seat is paid to prevent is public. OFAC’s 2024 chart lists 12 actions totaling $48,790,404. The 2025 chart lists 14 actions totaling $265,746,819. GVA Capital Ltd., on 12 June 2025, accounts for $215,988,868 of the 2025 total. The other 13 actions in 2025 total $49,757,951, which is in the same range as the entire 2024 chart. The 2026 chart, through the action dated 10 September 2026, lists 7 actions totaling $284,145,655. Adani Enterprises Limited, on 18 May 2026, is $275,000,000 of that year-to-date total.

A manufacturing compliance median of $89,290 in May 2025, or a professional-services median of $91,960, describes the industries that employ exporters. It does not describe the person who decides whether a shipment is a licensed export or a blocked payment. Counsel who hold the legal opinion, as distinct from the officer who runs the program, are a different seat, covered in export controls and sanctions lawyers.

05 Search record

Nine sanctions-desk searches, five US officer letters.

Nine sanctions-desk searches sit inside 36 compliance and regulatory leadership placements since 2017.

Of 9 sanctions-desk searches closed from 2017 through September 2026, 6 were at banks, payments firms, or commodity traders and 3 were at energy, industrial, or technology exporters. 7 of the nine were officer or head-of-desk titles. 2 were senior-manager titles. The seven heads split as 5 in the United States, one in London, and one in Riyadh.

The US median is the five, not the nine. From January 2024 through September 2026 those five accepted bases had a median of $185,000 and a median target bonus of 25 percent of base. The 2025 Handbook median for all lawyers, $159,670, sits under that base. It is an all-lawyer median. It is not a substitute for the letter.

The shortlist on those five US searches took a median of 26 days. The shortlist average on all 36 compliance-leadership placements since 2017 is 21 days. The sanctions officer seat ran slower than the blended compliance book. 3 of the five drew a counter-offer from the current employer. The counter-offer did not pull the median inside 21 days.

Of the 6 financial-institution searches, 4 written briefs required a law degree. 3 of the people hired did not have one. The degree line was not what closed the seat.

One of the five is a NASDAQ-listed payments company in New York. The seat was a sanctions compliance officer reporting to the chief compliance officer. The shortlist landed on day 23. The accepted offer was in week 11. Base was $210,000 and the target bonus was 30 percent. The first letter on that file tracked the internal-audit grade and was declined. The accepted base sat $42,000 above it. The chief compliance officer told us: “The internal-audit grade was the number we brought to the first letter. It did not survive the second conversation.”

The London file is the Head of Sanctions at a commodity trader, one of the six financial-institution searches and one of the seven heads. It closed in 2025 at £145,000 base and a 20 percent target bonus. The general counsel told us: “We had written a sanctions policy owner. The person we hired had blocked a cargo. The base moved before the offer went out.”

The Riyadh file is the third exporter seat and the seventh head. A Tadawul-listed energy company hired a Head of Legal who had built a sanctions desk, with London and Houston coverage. The search closed in week 10. The head of talent said: “Most firms sent regional CVs. They mapped who had actually built a sanctions desk, including people not in the Kingdom. The search closed in ten weeks.” That file is a Head of Legal search with a sanctions desk inside it. It is not one of the five US base-salary observations, and it carries no dollar base.

Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. Those rates are the corporate book, not a sanctions-only rate. A chief compliance officer search is a different brief, with its own pay page at chief compliance officer pay in 2026 and a 12-month replacement term. The wider compliance band is the compliance officer salary guide. To hire the desk, start with sanctions, MLRO and AML search.

06 Both sides of the letter

How to read the offer without mixing the grades.

Switch sides. The arithmetic is the same table. The mistake is different.

Compare the new letter with your current cash, then ask which decision you will own on day one.

What to test Why it moves the number
Is this an analyst queue, an officer decision, or the head of the desk? The two senior-manager closes were $118,000 and $124,000. The officer median was $185,000.
What is the target bonus, as a percent of base? The median on the five US officer letters was 25 percent. The New York payments letter was 30 percent.
Is a counter-offer already on the table? 3 of the five US officer-level searches drew one. Price it before the first interview, not after the third.
Which regime will you sign? OFAC, EU restrictive measures, and OFSI are different books. A London commodity-trader head closed in 2025 at £145,000.

Price the decision the hire will sign. Leave the internal-audit grade in the audit department.

Calibration input What to write in the letter
The May 2025 compliance median of $80,730 Context for a national occupation of 436,400 jobs. Not the bid for this seat.
The internal-audit manager grade On two of five US officer-level searches it missed the accepted base by $42,000 and $48,000.
GS-14 in Washington, January 2026 $143,913 at step 1 and $187,093 at step 10. A floor for a specialist, not a bank head of desk.
Fee and replacement 25-30 percent of total first-year compensation. Retainer of 30 percent of the fee at engagement. Six months if this hire is not the CCO. Twelve months if the search is the CCO.

Companies that want the seat filled, rather than the table only, brief it on sanctions, MLRO and AML search or through a hiring conversation.

Handbook wages, the GS table, and the OFAC charts.

Occupational wages are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Federal salaries are from the Office of Personnel Management. Penalty totals are from OFAC’s own charts.

Derived from those pages, in the same sentence as the inputs. Accountants and auditors at $83,680 minus compliance officers at $80,730 equals $2,950, both May 2025 medians. In finance and insurance, $93,290 minus $82,310 equals $10,980, both May 2025. OFAC’s 2025 total of $265,746,819 minus the GVA Capital Ltd. penalty of $215,988,868 equals $49,757,951 across the other 13 actions.

The five US officer-level bases, the two senior-manager bases, the London pound figure, the shortlist days, and the two audit-grade gaps are Sartori search records from 2017 through September 2026, with the officer median taken on letters closed from January 2024 through September 2026. They sit inside the 36 compliance-leadership placements. They are not a Bureau of Labor Statistics series.

Questions the offer has to answer

What is a sanctions compliance officer salary in the United States in 2026?

On five US officer-level sanctions searches closed from January 2024 to September 2026, median accepted base was $185,000. The target-bonus median on those five letters was 25 percent of base. The Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 median for all US compliance officers is $80,730, which is a different occupation and a different job.

How far is sanctions pay from internal-audit pay?

In May 2025, finance-and-insurance accountants and auditors earned a median of $93,290, which is $10,980 above finance-and-insurance compliance officers. That public gap is small. On two of the five US officer-level sanctions letters, the accepted base exceeded the company's internal-audit grade by $42,000 and $48,000.

What did OFAC penalties total in 2025, and why does that belong on a salary page?

OFAC recorded $265,746,819 across 14 actions in 2025, against $48,790,404 across 12 actions in 2024. One 2025 action, against GVA Capital Ltd. on 12 June 2025, was $215,988,868. The other 13 actions in 2025 totaled $49,757,951. The person who owns the screening decision sits in front of that exposure.

How long does a sanctions compliance search take?

The shortlist average across 36 compliance-leadership placements since 2017 is 21 days. On the five US officer-level sanctions searches closed from January 2024 to September 2026, the median shortlist was 26 days. A NASDAQ-listed payments company in New York reached a shortlist on day 23 and an accepted offer in week 11.

What does the company pay Sartori to run this search?

A retained search fee is 25-30 percent of total first-year compensation, and the retainer is 30 percent of that fee. The retainer is paid at engagement. A sanctions compliance officer who is not the chief compliance officer carries a 6-month replacement term. A retained CCO search carries 12 months.

Does the sanctions seat require a law degree?

Four of six financial-institution sanctions briefs since 2017 required a law degree, and three of the people hired did not have one. The brief that predicts a close is a license-or-block decision the candidate owned, not the degree line. The hiring desk is sanctions, MLRO and AML search.
