Skadden Salary 2026: New York class-year cash versus London NQ
Two published numbers, accessed the same day: New York class-of-2026 base is still $225,000; London newly qualified base is £177,000. This page is for the associate who earns that cash and for the general counsel who has to match it inside a company.
Two cities, two clocks, one dated table.
The 2026 contrast a Skadden salary conversation actually turns on is New York class-year cash versus London newly qualified cash, accessed the same day. Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York associates and counsel, that is the pair general counsel asked us to put on one page.
| Seat / seniority | Cash as published | As-of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York / U.S. class of 2026 (1st year) base | $225,000 | Current scale, page accessed 11 September 2026 | Skadden Associate Salary Information |
| New York / U.S. class of 2018 / 2017+ base | $435,000 | Current scale, page accessed 11 September 2026 | Skadden Associate Salary Information |
| London newly qualified base | £177,000 | UK careers page accessed 11 September 2026 | Skadden United Kingdom careers |
| London NQ base in U.S. dollars | $239,499 | Bank of England spot 10 September 2026 (£1 = $1.3531) | Derived: £177,000 × 1.3531 |
| U.S. market 1st-year base (Milbank, not this firm) | $235,000 | Announced 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026 | Above the Law |
The London newly qualified base now clears the New York first-year in dollars, and it is not the same seniority. Conversion uses the Bank of England spot of $1.3531 per pound on 10 September 2026, not Law360 UK’s 20 February 2025 gloss of $224,000 on the same £177,000 hike. The U.S. market first-year of $235,000 is Milbank’s June 2026 reset, effective 1 July 2026; it is on this table as a control, not as this firm’s number.
London newly qualified follows a two-year training contract, four six-month seats, and the Solicitors Regulation Authority SQE route. New York class of 2026 is first-year post-J.D., admitted through the New York State Board of Law Examiners. Do not price them as the same seniority.
Four ways to misread the table: collapsing two seniorities, treating the market reset as this firm’s number, budgeting a 2026 bonus that has not been published, and matching partner economics onto an associate hire. Sources sit in section 08.

What a Skadden salary is made of in New York.
The U.S. page is a class-year lockstep: base by graduation year, paid semi-monthly, plus a discretionary year-end bonus. The bases below are the current published scale. The bonus column is the last public match, and only where the tracker printed a cell.
The employer’s Associate Salary Information page, accessed 11 September 2026, states that the compensation information “reflects our current pay scale.” Class of 2026 and class of 2025 are both at $225,000. The ladder then steps through $235,000, $260,000, $310,000, $365,000, $390,000 and $420,000 before it caps at $435,000 for the class of 2018 and for 2017 and senior. Summer associates are on the same $225,000 annualized rate. Associate positions “may be eligible for a discretionary year-end bonus” — language, not a 2026 grid.
The U.S. students-and-graduates page, accessed the same day, repeats the $225,000 floor for entry-level associates and summers, and puts judicial clerks on a starting base “expected to be between $225,000 to $260,000 annually.” One-year clerks are treated as members of their graduating class for seniority and salary; clerks of more than one year are treated case by case. The firm “provides a starting bonus for judicial clerks”; the dollar amount is not stated, so it is not on this page. U.S. offices named on that careers page: Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, Washington, D.C., and Wilmington.

Bases: Skadden Associate Salary Information, accessed 11 September 2026. Bonus endpoints: Above the Law bonus tracker, 26 November 2025, recording the 21 November 2025 match, paid 15 December 2025, gated on 1,800 productive hours. A 2026 year-end bonus is not public.
NALP’s U.S. Associate Salary Survey as of 1 January 2025, released 28 May 2025 from 437 responding offices, put the median first-year base at $200,000 overall and $215,000 in firms of more than 700 lawyers, with $225,000 the modal reported figure (32 percent of all offices; 45 percent of offices in firms of 701+ lawyers). In six of 19 cities the median first-year was $225,000, New York City among them. This firm’s still-published New York first-year sits on that 2025 city median. The survey vintage predates Milbank’s 2 June 2026 raise. It is context for where the floor was, not evidence that the floor has moved at this employer.
What the careers page printsWhat it will not print
- Class-year base Lockstep by graduation year, paid semi-monthly, same published floor in the named U.S. offices. This is the number a general counsel can screenshot.
- Discretionary year-end bonus Eligible, not scheduled. The last public U.S. grid is a prior season’s match, with a productive-hours gate. London bonus dollars are not published at all.
- Partner economics Profits per equity partner is a firm ratio, not an associate cell and not a W-2. It does not belong on an offer that is filling a class-year seat.
London NQ cash sits above the New York first-year.
The UK careers page is a different instrument: trainee, newly qualified, vacation scheme. It is the number a head of legal in a European or dual-listed company actually meets when the hire is SRA-qualified.
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (UK) LLP, authorized and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority under reference 80014, publishes first-year trainee pay of £58,000, second-year trainee pay of £63,000, and newly qualified base of £177,000 plus a discretionary year-end bonus, on the United Kingdom careers page accessed 11 September 2026. Vacation-scheme students are paid £500 per week. The firm onboards “roughly 20” trainees who start in September. There is no direct training-contract route; seats are filled through vacation schemes. The academic gate is a minimum 2:1 or equivalent. PGDL and SQE course and exam fees are sponsored in full, plus a £20,000 maintenance grant for each course. Applications run 1 September to 1 December.
Law360 UK reported the hike to £177,000 on 20 February 2025, and printed a contemporaneous conversion of $224,000. That dollar figure is Law360’s February 2025 gloss, not the September 2026 Bank of England rate, and not all-in cash. Legal Cheek, on 11 January 2023, had recorded the previous step: London NQ base moving from £157,000 to £165,000, with around 14 trainees per year at the same trainee bases that still sit on the 2026 page. Trainee cash did not move with the NQ hike; intake did, from around 14 to roughly 20.
Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 NQ table, covering 100-plus Firms Most List outfits, recorded eighteen U.S. outfits in London above £170,000. This firm does not appear in that article’s table. The employer’s own published NQ is the Skadden figure to use. Legal Cheek’s 20 October 2025 trainee table put market-leading first-year trainee pay at £65,000 (Davis Polk, Milbank, Sullivan & Cromwell) and Magic Circle at £56,000; again this firm is absent, so the employer’s £58,000 is the trainee cell on this page.
New York class-year clockLondon NQ clock
- J.D. then lockstep ABA-approved degree, Uniform Bar Examination and New York Law Exam, then a class year that the U.S. payroll already knows how to pay.
- Vacation scheme, then two years No direct training-contract hire. Four six-month seats, first-year aim of one Corporate-group seat, SQE and qualifying work experience before NQ cash.
- Foreign-qualified lateral The UK page sends foreign-qualified lawyers to the experienced-attorney portal, not through the vacation scheme. A general counsel buying a dual-qualified seat is buying this clock, not the campus one.
What a general counsel actually matches.
The lawyer who earns the figure sits on one Am Law 5 platform. The company that pays to hire them sits in-house at the buyers of that platform: industrials, banks, sponsors, funds, energy, and governments.
The firm’s corporate capabilities page states that it has represented approximately 50 percent of the Fortune 250. That is the employer’s own client-coverage claim, not a third-party census, and it is the pool a chief legal officer is hiring from when a mid-level M&A or capital-markets associate leaves the building. Financial-institutions clients are described as U.S. and international banks, investment banks, asset managers, insurers, private-equity sponsors, fintech and payments firms. London clients are described as major corporates, financial institutions and governments, including Takeover Code work. The Americas experienced-attorneys page names the in-house and government exit as a designed path, not an accident. The alumni program, running more than 20 years, now connects 9,000-plus colleagues.
ACC and Empsight’s 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, data effective 1 March 2025, 1,632 U.S. in-house respondents, is the cash ladder a head of legal can put next to the careers-page bases without pretending they are the same instrument. Median total cash below the GC/CLO seat: single-lawyer GC $255,000; associate general counsel $294,000; deputy GC $368,000; division or subsidiary GC $341,000. CLOs at companies with revenue greater than $5 billion reported median base 44 percent higher than CLOs at companies under $1 billion, with median total target direct compensation exceeding $1 million.
Typical GC/CLO total cash sits next to this firm’s published senior-associate base and below last-year senior all-in once the 21 November 2025 bonus is added. The published New York first-year sits with single-lawyer GC base and below AGC base. A company that copies the first-year floor onto an AGC requisition is not matching a fifth-year; it is matching a campus number to a management seat.
GC/CLO median total cash
ACC/Empsight 2025, data effective 1 March 2025, 1,632 U.S. in-house respondents. The cash a typical company GC actually takes home before equity.
ACC 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey ↗Above the Law, restating Corporate Counsel’s 2025 General Counsel Compensation Report on 1 August 2025, recorded technology chief legal officers in 13 of the top 20 spots among 544 Fortune 1000 legal chiefs. On 30 July 2025 it reported the list-topping Fortune 1000 general counsel package at $30.2 million, up 10.6 percent from $27.3 million. Those are SEC-disclosed named-executive-officer packages — salary, bonus, stock, options, other — not cash comparable to a class-year base. The chief legal officer who matches last-public profits per equity partner is in that disclosed-CLO population, not in the ACC self-reported median.
Associate cashPublic-company CLO package
- Class-year and NQ cash What the employer pages print. The number on an offer to a lockstep associate or a London newly qualified solicitor.
- In-house cash What ACC measures: base plus short-term incentive for general counsel, deputy, associate GC. Overlaps senior lockstep. Does not print as PEP.
- Disclosed CLO economics What Fortune 1000 proxies measure. Equity-heavy. The plane a public-company board uses when the hire is the chief legal officer, not when the hire is a fifth-year from One Manhattan West.
Your job is to put a number on a requisition that will survive a compensation committee and a lockstep counter-offer.
- Print the careers page. The U.S. scale is still the $225,000–$435,000 ladder as of 11 September 2026. Do not brief the board on the Milbank $235,000 floor as if this employer had matched it.
- Add last year’s bonus. Where the 21 November 2025 cells are public, add them. Where they are not, say so rather than interpolating a mid-class grid from 2024.
- Split New York from London. A dual-qualified corporate counsel priced on £177,000 is not a New York first-year priced on $225,000. The clocks are different and the tax treatment is different.
- Keep PEP off the associate offer. Last-public profits per equity partner is a firm ratio. It is useful when you are hiring a partner. It is a category error on an AGC band.
- Decide the plane. ACC cash for a department lawyer; Fortune 1000 disclosed package for a public-company chief legal officer. Mixing them produces a requisition nobody can fill.
Your published number is real. The 2026 bonus is not, and an in-house offer that copies only the base is not matching you.
- Screenshot the scale page. Class year, base, the discretionary-bonus sentence. That is what a company can verify without a rumor.
- Carry last year’s bonus separately. The 1,800 productive-hours gate, including unlimited pro bono and up to 150 productive non-billable hours, is part of how that cash was earned. An in-house seat will not replicate the gate; it should still see the dollars.
- London NQ is a different product. Two years of seats, SQE, a September start of roughly 20. Do not let a U.S. first-year comparison erase that.
- Partner pay is not your next paycheck. 2025 PEP dollars are not public for this firm. A conversation that starts there is not about your class year.
- Ask who signs the band. A general counsel who can move an AGC number is a different buyer from a compensation committee that has frozen legal at last year’s first-year floor.
Match the last published bonus, not only the careers-page base.
The 2025–26 book that prices the seats.
Class-year cash is a talent price. The demand underneath it is announced mega-deals, completed U.S. closes, merger-control staffing, and a national-security overlay on inbound and outbound capital.
Reuters, on 7 January 2026, citing London Stock Exchange Group legal-adviser rankings, put global announced M&A in 2025 at $4.6 trillion, up 49 percent versus 2024, the highest since 2021, with 68 transactions of $10 billion or more — the most since LSEG records began in 1980. Four firms, this one among them, each served as principal adviser on $600 billion or more of deals in 2025. That is announced principal-adviser value, not firm revenue, and it is not Bloomberg’s completed-or-pending cut (~$550 billion for this firm) or Mergermarket’s $715 billion. Three methodologies, three numbers; this page uses LSEG via Reuters for the 2025 announced picture and the firm’s own 28 July 2026 statement for the 2026 close book.
LSEG, on 9 June 2026, described first-quarter 2026 global announced M&A at a five-year high, up 27 percent year on year, with European announced value up 82 percent from 2025, driven mostly by UK inbound. Technology was 33 percent of global M&A in the first two months of 2026, 47 percent of those announced in the U.S. Cross-border 2025 value was $1.24 trillion, up 46 percent. The live opportunities board accessed 11 September 2026 is already restocking against that mix: New York mid-level M&A; New York Finance labeled “Data Center & Digital Infrastructure”; London Financial Sponsors junior and mid-level; London Corporate Restructuring including a newly qualified seat; Washington National Security (Trade) mid-to-senior; Washington Political Law Compliance and Investigations at entry level.
The 2023 Merger Guidelines remain posted. The Justice Department Antitrust Division lists an Acting Assistant Attorney General memorandum of 18 February 2025 on their continued use — the second Trump administration did not withdraw them in its first month. Skadden’s 26 August 2026 write-up of the 48th Annual HSR Report (fiscal 2025) recorded roughly 2,000 filings, 41 Second Requests (2.1 percent, down from 59 or 3.0 percent in fiscal 2024), 18 enforcement actions versus 32, and settlements or consent decrees of 7 versus 2, so close to 40 percent of challenges in fiscal 2025 were settled against around 6 percent the year before. Nearly one-third of reported deals were above $1 billion. Fewer, larger reviews. Mid-to-senior antitrust staffing, not a junior mill.
The Federal Open Market Committee, on 17 June 2026, held the funds rate at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent. Minutes released 8 July 2026 record that the statement dropped language that had suggested an easing bias. Leveraged finance and financial-sponsors work stay busy in a restrictive-but-stable rate; a hiking path would rotate more of the book toward the London restructuring seats already on the board. Inbound, the America First Investment Policy memorandum of 21 February 2025 directs CFIUS at PRC-affiliated capital in technology, critical infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, energy and raw materials, and asks for a fast-track for allied capital. Outbound, Treasury’s 31 CFR Part 850 program — semiconductors, quantum, artificial intelligence, country of concern the PRC including Hong Kong and Macau — has been in force since 2 January 2025. Those two instruments are why a Washington National Security (Trade) seat sits on the same hiring board as New York M&A.
Delaware still writes the opinion language New York M&A sends out. Senate Bill 21, enacted March 2025, was held constitutional by the Delaware Supreme Court on 27 February 2026 in Rutledge v. Clearway Energy Group LLC. Going-private transactions still need both cleansing mechanisms; pleading-stage dismissal is more attainable where a statutory safe harbor is shown. Wilmington M&A mid-level and litigation mid-level remain on the live board. Advisory demand up; do not staff Wilmington as a volume-plaintiff factory on the back of that opinion. London public M&A still runs through the Takeover Code. The Competition and Markets Authority revised merger-remedies guidance in December 2025; the European Commission published draft merger guidelines on 30 April 2026. Those are London and Brussels clocks, not New York class-year clocks, and they are why the UK page still aims first-year trainees at a Corporate-group seat.
How the match actually closes in New York.
Sartori & Partners has worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches, 93 percent of files completed, on a typical 6-to-12-week timeline.
We map New York coverage as about 67,000 lawyers. That mapping figure is a density read, not an interview count. The interview work sits in the cohort already named above. Inside that New York associate mandate book, 14 of the 33 closed files over three years were company-side searches — a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal hiring a lockstep-scale associate into an in-house seat. The other 19 were firm-side associate laterals. Of those 14 company files, 9 were New York seats matching published class-year cash; 5 were London or dual-qualified seats matching newly qualified cash.
Across the same New York interview cohort, 118 respondents over a 24-month window were in-house general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal. Of those 118, 71 said they budget mid-level corporate counsel against the last published New York lockstep first-year they can print from a careers page, not against the June 2026 market reset. A chief legal officer at a Fortune 250 industrial company told us they had been briefing the board on a $225,000 first-year match “because that is what the firm’s careers page still prints,” and they had not reopened the band after the June 2026 Milbank move. A head of legal at a private-equity-backed energy platform said London NQ cash at £177,000 was now the number they used to price a UK-qualified corporate counsel, even though their New York associate-general-counsel band still opened at the published $225,000 floor.
Counter-offer incidence on the New York associate line is 37 percent across the 33 closed searches. That city figure is not evenly spread. Of the 14 company-side files, 8 drew a lockstep-firm counter; of the 19 firm-side laterals, 4 did. Twelve counters on 33 files is the city line. The company hires are where the defending firm still has a class-year machine to fire. Match the last published bonus, not only the careers-page base. An offer that copies $225,000 and ignores the 21 November 2025 special is the offer that generates the counter.
The uncomfortable number on this desk is time, not completion. We complete 93 percent of files. Median offer-to-acceptance on the New York associate line is 11 working days. On the 14 company-side files inside those 33 closed searches, that window ran past the city median because the compensation committee had to re-clear a number that matched a careers-page base and a prior-year bonus the board had not seen. Firm-side laterals sat on the 11-day line. In-house matches were the slow ones, and they were slow for reasons the candidate did not control.
Of 86 New York associates sitting on Am Law 5 lockstep in that same 24-month interview window, 52 said they would not accept an in-house offer that matched base and dropped the prior-year special bonus. That is the candidate-side version of the same finding: the careers page is not the all-in number, and a company that treats it as all-in will watch the process reopen.
The live board is the hiring census for this platform, not a rumor mill. New York was advertising mid-level M&A, capital markets including derivatives, finance including the data-center label, financial institutions, private and registered funds, IP and technology transactions, executive compensation, traditional labor, and energy and infrastructure, plus an internal Office of the General Counsel IP-contract-review seat that is not a client GC. London was advertising U.S. capital markets, corporate restructuring including newly qualified, and financial sponsors. Washington was advertising cybersecurity and data privacy, national security trade, political-law compliance, mass torts, renewable-energy tax, and funds. A general counsel hiring from this platform is hiring out of those labels, not out of a generic “BigLaw associate” pool. Our in-house and general counsel recruiting desk runs the company-side brief; associate recruiting runs the firm-side one. Companies building the legal function from nothing should start with the first general counsel guide before they try to match a class-year number.
Figures this page will not invent.
A named-firm salary page is only as useful as its omissions. The list below is the difference between a careers-page number and a rumor.
A 2026 year-end bonus for this firm is not public as of 11 September 2026. A 2026 special or summer bonus is not on Above the Law’s 2026 scorecard. Mid-class bonus cells for the 2025 season were not republished in the tracker; the 22 November 2024 grid is a prior year and is not carried forward. London bonus dollars are not on the UK careers page. 2025 profits per equity partner in dollars are not in the published Am Law 100 top 10 that Above the Law printed on 15 April 2026. A 2025 attorney headcount is not in that recap; dividing $4.073 billion by $2.319 million would be an invention, and it is not done here. Partner “salary” as distinct from PEP is not a public line. Judicial-clerk starting-bonus dollars are acknowledged by the employer and not quantified.
Milbank’s $235,000–$455,000 reset, announced 2 June 2026 and effective 1 July 2026, is a talent-market fact. It is not this firm’s published scale. Retention pressure on New York M&A, finance and funds laterals is a reasonable read from the matcher gap; a silent match is not. If the employer page moves, this page moves with it. Until then the screenshot is $225,000 to $435,000.
Skadden associate salary, on the public record, is the careers-page ladder. Skadden bonus, on the public record, is the 21 November 2025 match, and only the cells the tracker printed. Skadden PEP is $6,049,000 for 2024 and omitted for 2025. Skadden partner salary, as a paycheck, is not a number we have. The PEP league and the market lockstep are already written elsewhere; this URL owns one employer’s published cash, one dated FX contrast, and the in-house match a general counsel has to make.
Skadden compensation in 2026: questions we are asked
What is the Skadden salary for a New York first-year associate in 2026?
A New York first-year on the firm’s own careers page still earns a $225,000 base as of 11 September 2026. The class of 2025 sits on the same published floor. That page is labeled as the current U.S. pay scale and also lists a $225,000 annualized summer rate. It is base, paid semi-monthly, plus a discretionary year-end bonus whose 2026 dollar grid is not public. NALP’s survey as of 1 January 2025 put the New York City median first-year at $225,000, which is where this published floor still sits — after a June 2026 market reset this firm has not joined on the public matcher list.
What does a Skadden newly qualified associate earn in London in 2026?
London newly qualified associates currently receive £177,000 plus a discretionary year-end bonus, per the firm’s UK careers page accessed 11 September 2026. First-year trainees are at £58,000 and second-year trainees at £63,000. At the Bank of England spot of $1.3531 per pound on 10 September 2026, the NQ base converts to $239,499 — above the published New York first-year. That is not a seniority match: London NQ follows a two-year training contract; New York class of 2026 is first-year post-J.D.
Did Skadden match the 2026 $235,000 BigLaw associate scale?
No public source shows a match. Above the Law’s 2026 matcher table does not list the firm, and the careers page still prints $225,000–$435,000. Milbank announced the $235,000–$455,000 ladder on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026. Treat the employer page as the Skadden figure and the matcher list as the market figure. The market-wide lockstep lives on our 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale; this page does not reprint that table.
What is Skadden partner salary or Skadden PEP in 2026?
Public partner economics for 2024 were $6,049,000 profits per equity partner; 2025 PEP in dollars is not in the published Am Law 100 top 10. Above the Law cited the 2024 PEP on 21 November 2025 alongside $3,669,042,000 of 2024 gross revenue. The 2026 Am Law recap (15 April 2026) gives 2025 gross revenue of $4.073 billion (rank 5) and revenue per lawyer of $2.319 million (rank 8), and stops there for this firm’s PEP. Partner “salary” as a W-2 line is not a public figure. The PEP league belongs to partner pay at the Am Law top 50.
How should a general counsel match this cash on an in-house offer?
Budget the last published class-year base plus the last published bonus, not the June 2026 Milbank $235,000 grid this firm has not joined. For a New York mid-level, that means the careers-page base for the relevant class year plus the 21 November 2025 bonus cells where they are public. ACC/Empsight’s 2025 survey (data effective 1 March 2025, 1,632 U.S. respondents) puts associate general counsel median total cash at $294,000 and GC/CLO median total cash at $410,000 — overlapping senior lockstep base, not partner PEP. Fortune 1000 disclosed packages (Corporate Counsel 2025, n=544) sit at a $2.95 million median and are equity-heavy; they are the public-company chief legal officer match for partner economics, not for associate cash.
What Skadden bonus was paid in 2025, and is a 2026 bonus public?
The last public match was 21 November 2025: $15,000 plus $6,000 for the class of 2025, paid 15 December 2025. A 2026 year-end bonus is not public. Senior associates (class of 2018+) were at $115,000 or $125,000 year-end plus a $25,000 special, gated on 1,800 productive hours including unlimited pro bono and up to 150 productive non-billable hours. Mid-class 2025 cells were not republished in the tracker. Above the Law’s 2026 summer-specials table does not list this firm; do not budget a 2026 special you cannot source.
Employer pages, Am Law recaps, and the instruments that price the work.
U.S. and London cash come from the firm's own careers pages accessed 11 September 2026. Bonus cells come from the last public match in the legal press. In-house cash comes from ACC and from Fortune 1000 proxy reporting. Deal values are labeled by methodology and not blended.

U.S. bases measure the current published lockstep, not all-in cash. London NQ is employer base plus an unpublished discretionary bonus. The $239,499 figure is arithmetic on the Bank of England spot for 10 September 2026, not a Skadden publication. 2024 PEP and 2024 headcount are prior-year capital, not 2026 pay. LSEG, Bloomberg and Mergermarket 2025 M&A values for this firm are three different cuts and are not summed. ACC figures are self-reported in-house cash; Fortune 1000 figures are disclosed NEO packages.
Our own numbers — the New York interview cohort, the associate mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page.
