Sullivan & Cromwell Salary 2026: Not the Cravath Table
On 26 June 2026 this firm matched $235,000 for a first-year and $455,000 for the class of 2018, while Cravath stayed silent through late August. The 2026 figure a general counsel matching Sullivan & Cromwell actually funds is that dated scale, then an equity package — not the last Cravath memo.
The lockstep is not whatever Cravath last printed.
On 26 June 2026 in New York, Sullivan & Cromwell salary at the first-year rung moved to $235,000. Sartori maps about 67,000 lawyers in New York. The market still treats every New York lockstep as the last Cravath table. That reading is wrong for the associate who earns the figure and for the general counsel who has to match it.

The Sullivan & Cromwell salary table a general counsel actually funds
The firm does not issue a public class-year memo. The public measurement of 2026 base is two endpoints on a living scorecard, and the public measurement of cash on top is last year's bonus table.
A memo from CravathA match without Cravath
- Bellwether breaks A lead firm prints a new class-year floor. In 2026 that lead was not the firm the lockstep is still named after.
- This firm matches Individualized intranet notices, not a universal PDF. The public record is a scorecard row with two endpoints.
- The nickname lags The last Cravath table stays on the careers page of a different firm. Pricing off the nickname is pricing off a document this firm did not follow.
Above the Law, on 26 June 2026, reported that Sullivan & Cromwell had followed the new standard after Milbank’s raise, with individualized intranet notices rather than a firm-wide memo. The living associate-compensation scorecard, first posted 5 June 2026, later listed the S&C row as Class of 2026/2025 at $235,000 and Class of 2018 at $455,000, minimum hours undisclosed, raises presumed effective 1 July 2026 unless a firm states otherwise. Mid-years 2 through 7 are not printed on that row. They are not treated as S&C-published cells on this page. The eight-year grid that became the 2026 New York prevailing scale lives on the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale; this page owns the named firm.
The scale this firm followed was set on 2 June 2026. Bloomberg Law, that day, wrote that Milbank’s associate pay scale will now range from $235,000 to $455,000; Law360 Pulse confirmed the same floors. Cravath, Swaine & Moore had not published a matching 2026 scale as of 26 August 2026. Above the Law put that silence at 85 days, just over 12 weeks after the 2 June announcement, and restated the new scale as $235,000 for first-years to $455,000. Speculation in that piece about waiting until year-end bonus season is commentary, not a firm number, and is not used here.
The last public Cravath base table in this cycle, reprinted by the ABA Journal on 28 November 2023 from a memo via Above the Law, set the Class of 2023 at $225,000 and the Class of 2017 at $420,000, effective 1 January 2024, with no billable-hour requirement. That is the table the nickname still points at. It is not the table this firm matched in June 2026. Above the Law, in June 2016, already recorded this firm printing senior-class bases above the then-Cravath table by individualized notice rather than a universal memo. The 2016 dollars stay in 2016. The method is the same method: this firm has not waited on Cravath to move its own grid. A general counsel who budgets “Cravath scale” as a synonym for Sullivan & Cromwell is budgeting the wrong document.

Cash on top of base, for this firm, is last year’s bonus table. Above the Law, on 11 December 2025, reported that Sullivan & Cromwell does not publish compensation memos and instead sends individualized links, and that sources said the firm matched the prevailing market rate on bonuses, paid just before Christmas. The reported split, year-end then special, runs from Class of 2025 at $15,000 and $6,000, both prorated, through Class of 2018 at $115,000 and $25,000. Combined stacks in the last column below are arithmetic on those cells, not a leaked all-in schedule. A 2026 year-end scale is not public. Milbank announced firmwide special bonuses on 27 July 2026, paid by 31 August; whether this firm matched that summer pulse is an open question, not a figure.
| Class year | Year-end bonus | Special bonus | Combined bonus cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class of 2025 | $15,000* | $6,000* | Prorated |
| Class of 2024 | $20,000 | $6,000 | $26,000 |

The lockstep is not whatever Cravath last printed.
A general counsel matching this firm is not matching the ACC median.
The national in-house survey and this firm's senior lockstep are different instruments. The buyer who can clear $455,000 in cash and then put equity on top is a Fortune 1000 legal chief, not a single-lawyer general counsel.
The Association of Corporate Counsel, in the 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, data effective 1 March 2025 across 1,632 self-reported U.S. respondents, put GC/CLO median base at $330,000, median total cash at $410,000, and median total target direct compensation at $503,000. Ninety-six percent were short-term-incentive eligible; median STI target was 35 percent of base; median STI amount $91,000. Sixty-three percent were LTI-eligible, with a median LTI target of 40 percent and a median LTI target amount of $134,000. The 90th-percentile total cash was $764,000; the 90th-percentile total target direct was $1.46 million. A senior Sullivan & Cromwell base of $455,000 already sits above that national GC/CLO median base, and only barely under median total target, before any 2025 bonus stack is added. Single-lawyer general counsel on the same survey printed a median base of $234,000 and median total target of $280,000. That is a different buyer, and it cannot fund this lockstep.
That national median is not the buyer who matches this firm. Above the Law, on 1 August 2025, summarizing Corporate Counsel’s 2025 General Counsel Compensation Report, put median pay at $2.95 million across 544 Fortune 1000 legal chiefs, with technology CLOs holding 13 of the top 20 spots and the top four packages each more than $20 million, stock the bulk. That is SEC-disclosed named-executive-officer total compensation, not a survey of all general counsel. A New York cut of that report did not return a usable read and is omitted. CLOs at companies with revenue above $5 billion, on the ACC survey, make 44 percent more in base and 173 percent more in total target compensation than CLOs at organizations under $1 billion. The match is company size and equity, not a first-year sticker.
In that New York interview cohort, 81 of 124 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at financial-institution and listed-industrial clients over a 24-month window said they price a lockstep-trained hire from this tier against Fortune 1000 CLO equity packages, not against the ACC national median. A chief legal officer at a listed industrial told us, inside that window, that matching this firm’s senior cash was an equity-committee problem, not an HR-band problem. A general counsel at a money-center bank said the Legal Division does not hire first-years from law school; it hires experienced attorneys from private practice onto product desks, and the cash conversation starts at the printed class year, not at a survey median.
National survey cashDisclosed NEO equity
- ACC median CLO Self-reported base and target direct. Useful for a mid-market legal department. It does not clear a senior lockstep stack.
- Product-desk counsel Bank Legal and mega-fund Vice President seats. Cash often sits below the lockstep. The matching payer at those employers is still the CLO.
- Fortune 1000 legal chief SEC-disclosed total pay, equity the bulk. This is the instrument that can match the firm, including a partner-level package.
Single-lawyer GC, median total target direct
ACC 2025. A one-lawyer department cannot fund this firm's senior cash in base.
ACC 2025 survey ↗Who earns this lockstep, and where the work sits.
The lawyers who earn the 2026 figure sit first on a New York–headed partnership of more than 1,000 lawyers in 13 offices, trained as generalists and promoted almost entirely from the associate ranks, now including a January 2026 income-partner tier.
The firm’s About page describes more than 1,000 lawyers, 13 offices, headquarters in New York, and a single partnership without geographic division, hiring law-school graduates and promoting to partner almost entirely from among its own associates. The New York office page puts more than 600 of those lawyers at 125 Broad Street. The Australasia brochure, copyright 2025, bands the United States at 770 or more lawyers, Europe at 150 or more, and Asia/Pacific at 60 or more. English-qualified associates in London, on the firm’s own careers page, are paid the same salaries as their U.S.-qualified colleagues at the same level of post-qualification experience. That is dollar parity, not a sterling NQ table. London trainees are a different product: first-year trainee salary £70,000, second-year £75,000, with 2026 qualification retention at 100 percent on five qualifying trainees. Applications for the 2029 intake run 3 May to 31 May 2027, for approximately fifteen places across four six-month seats. English-qualified laterals are asked for a two-year training contract at a leading City or international firm and experience in at least two of the office’s practice areas. The dollar lockstep is the U.S. class-year product. The sterling trainee band is not.
Incoming associates elect Litigation, General Practice, Tax, or Estates and Personal. General Practice has seven subgroups — Capital Markets, Commercial Real Estate, Executive Compensation, Finance and Restructuring, Financial Services, Intellectual Property, Mergers & Acquisitions — assigned after a 24-month generalist period. The firm’s own careers copy restates the same four groups for incoming summers, with a generalist summer program. Offers run 14 days, with additional time on request, and the firm states it does not turn offers into exploding offers. Twenty-four of the more than 170 associates who joined in fall 2025 were former clerks. Clerkship cash belongs to another page; here the gate is the clerkship itself.
The New York office page names the work a matching general counsel’s outside-counsel budget is buying: securities, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, arbitration, employment, products liability, criminal defense and investigations, banking, real estate, project finance, tax, and estates and personal, plus restructuring, intellectual property, cybersecurity, ESG, crisis management and international trade. Washington, D.C., established 1977, splits joiners into Litigation or General Practice for corporate and financial-services regulatory work, with regular staff-level contact at the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal banking agencies, Treasury and congressional committees. Palo Alto, opened in 2000, lists TMT, M&A, antitrust, intellectual property, capital markets, litigation, corporate governance, tax, fintech, cybersecurity and investigations. London General Practice adds credit, leveraged and acquisition finance, private equity, restructuring, financial services and Competition — merger control, FDI and European Commission investigations. Ninety lawyers rotated through offices in the past five years, on the firm’s own careers copy. The lockstep travels. The desk map does not.
The associate who earns this table is hired at the beginning, trained as a generalist, and now has a nonequity destination that did not exist on this partnership a year ago.
- Promote from within. The firm says it promotes lawyers to partner almost entirely from among its own associates. Nine lawyers were promoted to the global partnership effective 1 January 2026, across Frankfurt, London, Melbourne, New York and Washington. Five New York lawyers were appointed to the firm’s counsel rank short of partner the same day.
- A new retention seat. On 15 January 2026 the firm created an income-partner (nonequity) path. Equity partners continue to own and govern the firm. Some associates are still expected to go directly to equity. A discretionary enhanced bonus for third-years and above in the top 10 percent of their practice group by hours sits on top of the seniority bonus; its dollar size is not public. A $50,000 referral bonus pays half at start and half after one year.
- Alumni paths are the other exit. The careers page claims 4,000 alumni worldwide, with more than 180 currently serving as general counsel of their company, more than 150 as CEO or founder, and more than 290 in government. That is firm-claimed stock on an undated page, not a 2026 placement report.
The general counsel who pays this table is buying firm-trained judgment on a docket the company already has, and ACC still prices that background as a premium.
- Clients split almost evenly. The About page puts clients as nearly evenly divided between U.S. and non-U.S. entities: industrial and commercial companies, financial institutions, private funds, governments, educational and charitable institutions, and individuals, estates and trusts. Those are the employers of the matching general counsel.
- Bank Legal hires experience. A bulge-bracket U.S. investment bank Legal Division states, on its own careers page, that for experienced hires it generally does not hire directly from law schools, but instead hires attorneys who have experience in private practice, onto desks that include Investment Banking Legal, Global Markets Legal, Bank Regulatory and Litigation-Regulatory.
- Firm experience still pays in-house. Prior law-firm experience on the ACC 2025 survey added 16 percent to attorney median base and 18 percent to total cash, and 21 percent to CLO base and 13 percent to total cash, data effective 1 March 2025. The company is paying for the training. It is not matching a first-year sticker.

Listed industrials and tech

Private funds and asset managers
Legal & Compliance desks that hire lockstep-trained mid-levels onto fund, credit and real-estate seats. Cash often sits below the lockstep; the matching payer is the CLO.
Governments and public bodies
Alumni destinations, not lockstep payers: DOJ, SEC, CFTC, Federal Reserve, FDIC, Treasury, OCC, CFIUS. They set the hours. They do not print this scale.
The book that pays this scale is concentrated M&A, not a volume boom.
Calendar-2025 revenue per lawyer at this firm printed above Cravath's. The capital underneath is a $4.6 trillion announced-M&A year and a nonequity tier that copies a path Cravath opened in 2023.
Printed associate lockstepUnpublished equity
- Associate lockstep Class year sets the public endpoints. Hours are undisclosed as a firm-wide gate. 2026 year-end is not yet a public cell.
- Income partner A nonequity destination opened in January 2026. The dollar band was never published. Equity remains a tighter gate.
- Equity Partners continue to own and govern. PEP is not a sourced 2025 cell on the Am Law pages. RPL is the open proxy.
Above the Law, on 15 April 2026, put Sullivan & Cromwell revenue per lawyer at $2.507 million for calendar 2025, up 7.46 percent, sixth among the Am Law 100. Cravath printed $2.255 million RPL, down 0.04 percent, rank 10. That is the clean partner-side comparison this cycle. S&C’s 2025 PEP dollar figure and 2025 gross-revenue dollar figure were not on the pages and are omitted rather than inferred from RPL times headcount. 2024 gross revenue, cited 11 December 2025, was $2,050,719,000, rank 25; 2023 gross revenue, cited 12 December 2024, was $1,864,290,000, rank 24. Am Law 100 aggregates for calendar 2025, restated 30 April 2026, included $178.95 billion gross revenue, up 13.0 percent; average RPL of $1.39 million, up 8.7 percent; average PEP of $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent; headcount of 128,868; nonequity partners up about 7 percent against equity partners up about 2 percent.
Reuters, on 8 January 2026, citing LSEG, put 2025 global announced M&A at $4.6 trillion, up 49 percent against 2024, the highest since 2021, with 68 deals of $10 billion or more, the most since records began in 1980. LSEG Insights, on 9 June 2026, restated those totals and put first-quarter 2026 global announced M&A at a five-year high, up 27 percent year on year; technology was 33 percent of global M&A in the first two months of 2026. The firm’s 24 February 2026 Review, a self-report, put its own 2025 M&A book at nearly $505 billion of announced transactions, including every one of the six-largest U.S. bank deals, and capital-markets offerings totaling $454 billion. League-table methodology is not restated here. Those are announced deal values, not realized fees.
The Federal Open Market Committee cut the federal-funds target 25 basis points to 4.00–4.25 percent on 17 September 2025, then a further 25 basis points to 3.50–3.75 percent on 10 December 2025, and held that range on 17 June 2026, citing strong productivity growth and capital investment. The Chair’s 17 September 2025 press conference put the median participant at 3.6 percent for year-end 2025, 3.4 percent for end-2026 and 3.1 percent for end-2027. The firm’s February Review tied 2026 deal expectations to a more deregulatory focus in Washington and likely lower interest rates. The 2026 summer class is sized at more than 210, against nearly 160 summers from 29 law schools in 2025. Mid-levels on this lockstep are staffing live deals, not a 2023-style drought.
The same Review names where the firm says it is adding seats: London in private capital, restructuring, leveraged finance, high yield, European transactional tax, private equity M&A, European private credit and financial-services regulatory; New York laterals into corporate governance, shareholder activism and executive compensation; Palo Alto antitrust; Los Angeles intellectual-property and technology litigation. Those labels are the hiring signal a general counsel can use without treating a job-board reprint as a scale. Bloomberg Law, on 7 November 2023, reported that Cravath had established a salaried-partner role; Sullivan & Cromwell followed on 15 January 2026. Nonequity headcount in the Am Law 100 grew about 7 percent in 2025 against about 2 percent for equity. The new rung is a retention seat, not a published partner salary.
The same docket that pays the lockstep is the docket a general counsel cannot brief out at 2 a.m.
Bank-merger consent orders, a CFIUS golden share, a Delaware remedy ruling, a proposed crypto offering rule, and a de novo national-bank charter all pull the desks this lockstep staffs — and the in-house seats that later hire the people who staffed them.
The OCC, on 18 April 2025, announced conditional approval of Discover Bank into Capital One, National Association, on approved plans for corrective action and remediation of harm; the combined bank was expected at about $660 billion in assets. The application had been filed 21 March 2024, with a public meeting on 19 July 2024. The firm’s 2025 Review states it advised Discover on the $50.6 billion merger, related antitrust, and Federal Reserve and FDIC consent orders, plus CFPB and SEC investigations. That is a multi-year Financial Services and investigations workstream in New York and Washington, running well past closing. The in-house counterpart is bank Legal and associate-general-counsel M&A at a G-SIB, not a first-year diligence seat. A chief legal officer who staffs that remediation internally is hiring the same people the lockstep just paid $455,000 to keep.
Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel closed on 18 June 2025 under a National Security Agreement and a U.S. government Golden Share, with about $11 billion of committed new investment in U.S. Steel by 2028. The NSA commitments include U.S. incorporation and a Pittsburgh headquarters, a majority-U.S. citizen board, U.S.-citizen key management including the CEO, and a pledge to maintain U.S. production capacity. The Golden Share gives the United States a right to appoint one independent director and presidential consent rights on cutting the committed capex, the name and headquarters, redomicile, transferring production or jobs abroad, and specified plant-idling decisions. The Harvard Law Review timeline records a January 2025 block, an April 2025 de novo CFIUS review, a May 21 CFIUS report and a June 13, 2025 executive order allowing the deal subject to the NSA. The firm’s Review states it advised Nippon Steel on the $14 billion acquisition. CFIUS mitigation is a senior-associate and partner product in Washington and New York. The matching general counsel is the legal chief of a listed industrial whose board now lives with a government consent right on capex, name, headquarters and production.
The Delaware Supreme Court, sitting en Banc, submitted the Tesla appeal on 15 October 2025 and decided it on 19 December 2025: affirmed in part, reversed in part, rescission reversed, plan reinstated, $1 in nominal damages. Skadden’s 24 December 2025 client memo recorded that the justices had varying views on liability and controller status but agreed rescission was an extreme remedy after six years of performance. CNBC the same day noted that the Court of Chancery’s January 2024 process findings were not reversed. Executive-compensation and Delaware-litigation seats in New York staff that docket; the matching chief legal officer is rewriting controller-pay process for a public-company board. The lockstep pays those seats. The ACC median does not describe them.
The SEC proposed Regulation Crypto Assets on 18 August 2026, file S7-2026-27, comments due 20 October 2026. The firm’s 21 August 2026 memo describes two exemptions — a startup exemption up to $5 million over four years, and a fundraising exemption in Regulation A-style tiers up to $20 million and $75 million per 12 months — plus a conditional safe harbor from “investment contract,” with Howey still supplying the definition. It is a proposal, not a final rule. The OCC, in Corporate Decision #1390 dated 2 September 2026, gave Revolut Bank US, N.A., preliminary conditional approval for a de novo national-bank charter under 12 USC 21–27 and 12 CFR 5.20, to sit in Stamford, Connecticut, with no branches. Conditions include 10 percent tier 1 leverage for three years. Banking Dive, on 4 September 2026, put paid-in capital at at least $95 million and a company target of 2027. Those two files load Financial Services, capital markets, BSA/AML and fintech associates through 2027. They do not move the ACC median.
Post-confirmation restructuring did not end at the FTX effective date of 3 January 2025. The fifth distribution, announced 17 July 2026 for 31 July 2026, put Class 5A/5B customer claims at 105 percent cumulative. The firm is named as legal counsel to FTX on that release. The 2025 Review described post-confirmation adversary work with billions of dollars at issue. That is a 2025–2027 New York restructuring seat, with a London special-situations overlay the Review says expanded in 2025, not a closed 2022 filing. A general counsel at a digital-asset or broker-dealer platform who needs that training is hiring against the same clock. None of these 2026 items is a statute that forces Cravath to match. The lockstep break is a firm choice under talent competition, funded by the deal and enforcement cycle a matching head of legal already has on the internal docket.
The matching general counsel is the legal chief who can put equity on the table.
Write the offer on the printed endpoint, then decide the equity.
We have worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years, for companies hiring lockstep-trained lawyers onto the payroll and for the firms that still run that lockstep.
Over the trailing three years Sartori’s New York associate mandate telemetry records 33 closed searches, a 93 percent completion rate, a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, and a median 11 working days from offer to signature. Counter-offers landed on 37 percent of those 33 closed associate files. Of those 33, 9 were laterals out of New York lockstep firms that matched the June 2026 scale by individualized notice rather than a published memo, over that same 36-month window. Five of those 9 were company-side hires onto a bank Legal or industrial legal department. Four were firm-side. Three of those 9 ran past 12 weeks on compensation structure — base versus total cash versus long-term incentive — not on shortlist quality.
Those three files are why a 93 percent completion rate is not a victory lap. We opened them before the compensation committee had seen the $455,000 senior endpoint. The general counsel had budgeted ACC-median base against a printed lockstep that already sat above that cash line, and the board would not reopen equity on the first pass. They were re-scoped to a deputy or stretched past twelve weeks. They did not vanish, and they did not fill on the original brief. That conversion cost is the uncomfortable number on this page. The New York associate desk still quotes 6 to 12 weeks as typical; on this slice of the book we now refuse to circulate a name until the equity committee has seen the printed endpoint. Sartori maps lawyer coverage globally at about 1.5 million profiles and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The typical offer-to-signature window on the same 33 files remains 11 working days once the committee has actually met.
Two composites, category only. A NYSE-listed U.S. bank asked us to move a year-6 lockstep associate from a New York firm that had matched the June 2026 scale by intranet notice into Investment Banking Legal. The Legal Division does not hire first-years; the cash conversation started at the printed class year. Cash was not the bind; the bind was whether the compensation committee would underwrite a lockstep stack against an ACC CLO band that only clears in the $5 billion-plus total-target tail. The file closed in the tenth week after the equity committee met a second time. A PE-backed industrial platform asked for a year-4 lockstep associate as associate general counsel, M&A and CFIUS follow-through. The first offer honored an ACC-median base to “reset” the in-house title. The candidate’s counter, consistent with the 37 percent incidence on the New York associate line, was the printed senior-adjacent stack plus a signing bonus. We rewrote the brief to the printed endpoint before the name circulated. Time-to-fill: nine weeks. No real company, firm or candidate is named in either file.
The competing buyer at the top of this table is the company, not another firm. For how that search actually runs on a corporate payroll, see in-house counsel recruiting. For the associate lockstep when the buyer is still a firm, see associate recruiting. The in-house cash map sits on general counsel salary 2026. Partner-pay mechanics beyond this firm’s published RPL live on what partners really make at the Am Law top 50.
Sullivan & Cromwell 2026 pay: questions both sides of the table ask
What is Sullivan & Cromwell salary in 2026 for associates, and what does a general counsel matching it actually pay?
Sullivan & Cromwell’s 2026 associate endpoints are $235,000 and $455,000, reported 26 June 2026. Above the Law recorded a match to the Milbank lockstep by individualized intranet notices, effective 1 July 2026, with mid-year bases not printed on the firm’s scorecard row. A general counsel matching this firm is not matching the ACC national GC/CLO median base of $330,000. The buyer who can clear a senior lockstep stack is the legal chief whose disclosed total pay sits in the Fortune 1000 distribution, median $2.95 million across 544 chiefs in the 2025 Corporate Counsel report.
Did Sullivan & Cromwell match the 2026 Milbank associate raise?
Yes: Above the Law recorded the match on 26 June 2026, effective 1 July. The living scorecard lists Class of 2026/2025 at $235,000 and Class of 2018 at $455,000, hours undisclosed. Cravath had not published a matching scale as of 26 August 2026, 85 days after Milbank’s 2 June announcement. The New York lockstep in 2026 is not “whatever Cravath last printed.”
What bonus did Sullivan & Cromwell associates receive for 2025?
Year-end plus special ran from $15,000 and $6,000 prorated to $115,000 and $25,000, reported 11 December 2025. Above the Law wrote that the firm does not publish compensation memos and instead sends individualized links, and that sources described a match to the prevailing market rate, paid just before Christmas. Combined class-of-2018 bonus cash on those cells is $140,000. A 2026 year-end scale had not been made public as of the research window.
What is Sullivan & Cromwell PEP, and is partner salary a public number?
Partner salary is not public; calendar-2025 revenue per lawyer printed at $2.507 million, rank 6. That RPL cell is the open 2026 Am Law 100 proxy, published 15 April 2026; 2025 PEP and 2025 gross revenue were not on the pages and are omitted here. 2024 gross revenue was $2,050,719,000, Am Law 100 rank 25. An income-partner tier was announced 15 January 2026; its dollar band was never published.
How does Sullivan and Cromwell salary compare with U.S. general counsel pay?
A senior Sullivan & Cromwell base of $455,000 already sits above ACC’s $330,000 GC/CLO median base. ACC’s 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025 across 1,632 self-reported respondents, put GC/CLO median total cash at $410,000 and median total target direct compensation at $503,000. The 90th-percentile total target is $1.46 million. The in-house match is an LTI problem at mega-cap, not a first-year sticker.
What should a chief legal officer budget to hire a Sullivan & Cromwell-trained lawyer onto the payroll?
Budget the $455,000 senior endpoint first; ACC median total target direct compensation of $503,000 does not clear it. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 9 were laterals out of New York lockstep firms that matched the June 2026 scale by individualized notice; 3 of those 9 ran past the 6-to-12-week window because the company had budgeted ACC-median cash against that senior base. Re-scope equity before you open, or the clock becomes a compensation-committee file.

Associate base endpoints are the 26 June 2026 Above the Law match item and the living scorecard S&C row (Class of 2026/2025 $235,000; Class of 2018 $455,000; hours undisclosed). Mid-year bases are not S&C-published cells. 2025 year-end and special bonuses are the 11 December 2025 Above the Law table; combined stacks are arithmetic on those cells.
