Salary · Summer 2026

The 2026 weekly against the lockstep it is meant to preview.

Cravath still printed $4,327 a week for 2026 summers. The firm writes that check as a 52-week slice of first-year base. The general counsel who later hires that class does not reprint it on an in-house Attorney seat.

The weekly is a 52-week slice. It is not the first-year paycheck.

A 2026 summer associate salary at Cravath is still $4,327 a week, printed on the firm’s recruiting page as of 11 September 2026. That is the number the 2L cashes. It is also the number a chief legal officer keeps quoting, incorrectly, as the cash the company will later have to match.

We map nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally. We map roughly 67,000 lawyers in New York. That New York file records admission and employer. It does not print summer weeklies, and it does not tell a general counsel what to put on an Attorney requisition. The weekly lives on firm careers pages and in NALP’s office-reported medians. The later in-house number lives in the Association of Corporate Counsel’s title stack. Those are two payers, two titles, and two documents. Treating them as one number is the mistake this page is for.

What 2026 pages actually printed for summers, by payer. Firm rows are careers-page prints accessed 11 September 2026, except Milbank’s summer inclusion, which is the 2 June 2026 announcement as reported by Above the Law. No row here is a national median.

Cravath’s How to Apply page, accessed 11 September 2026, states that summer associates are paid a weekly salary of $4,327. Arithmetic only: $4,327 times 52 is $225,004, the $225,000 first-year lockstep rounded to the dollar. Base sliced by weeks. Not all-in cash.

Four different facts about the same summer. None of them is the in-house Attorney number. The later match is below.

02 Who prints it

Lockstep weeklies are a large-firm print, not a U.S. summer median.

The $4,327 figure is what three New York partnerships still had on the page in September 2026. NALP’s office-reported 2L median, as of 1 January 2025, was $3,850. Those two facts can both be true.

Davis Polk’s U.S. Summer Program page, accessed 11 September 2026, does not publish a weekly dollar. It states that summer associates in New York, Los Angeles, Northern California and Washington DC are paid an annualized salary of $225,000, prorated for the number of weeks worked. New York summers who split must start on an official start date and work eight consecutive weeks. Overseas or U.S. office splits require a minimum of 10 weeks at the firm. The company, government office or financial institution that takes the back half of a New York split is a host. It is not the lockstep payroll.

Skadden’s associate-salary page, accessed the same day, lists Class of 2026 base at $225,000 and a separate summer table at $225,000 annual salary, paid semi-monthly during employment. Associate positions may be eligible for a discretionary year-end bonus. The summer row does not carry that sentence. The U.S. law-students page repeats the $225,000 summer figure and states that the new associate class primarily consists of its prior summer associates, recruited from more than 40 law schools.

Debevoise’s summer FAQs print $4,330 a week for the 2025 summer class, with an eight-week minimum. That is a 2025 print, one dollar off Cravath’s 2026 weekly, and it is useful only as a cluster: the lockstep weekly is the $225,000 lockstep divided by 52, give or take a rounding dollar. It is not NALP’s median, and it is not Milbank’s $235,000 first-year, which Above the Law reported on 2 June 2026 as including summers from 1 July 2026 without publishing a weekly.

Jones Day’s U.S. students page already prints a 2027 summer figure: $240,000 annualized in a named set of offices including New York, and $235,000 in Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and Minneapolis, plus an additional $2,500 per week totaling $25,000 after 10 weeks for 2Ls. That is next cycle. It is not the 2026 Cravath weekly. Milbank’s law-students page, accessed 11 September 2026, puts New York first-years on a $235,000 print and runs summers through a 10-week, three-area rotation. The weekly for that rotation was not on the page.

NALP 2L summer weekly medians by firm size, figures as of 1 January 2025, rounded to the nearest $25. The lockstep print sits at the top of the large-firm band, not at the all-office median.

NALP 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey Special Report to Survey Participants; 2L medians.

NALP office-reported summer weekly medians as of 1 January 2025, by class year and firm size. Medians rounded to the nearest $25. The 3L figure in the 251–700 band was reported by more than half of those offices and was also the high. Click a column header to re-rank.

All responding offices $3,850 324 offices $3,850 340 offices $3,900 79 offices

Range of average 2L summer weeklies, all sizes: $1,000 to $4,700. For 701-or-more offices the 1L and 2L range high is $4,325 — the $225,000-over-52 print. Survey pool: 437 responding offices, 87 percent in firms of more than 250 lawyers. These are 1 January 2025 office medians, published in May 2025, before Milbank’s June 2026 raise.

The raise missed the 2026 check.

03 What the check is not

What a 2026 summer associate salary does not buy.

The weekly previews first-year base. It does not purchase the bonus stack, the clerkship kicker, the return offer, or the in-house cash a company later posts.

Cravath’s recruiting page, accessed 11 September 2026, puts New York associate base on a scale currently ranging from $225,000 to $420,000, plus a discretionary year-end bonus. Incoming associates who complete a qualifying clerkship receive a $125,000 clerkship bonus, or $150,000 for two years or two one-year clerkships. Those sentences sit in the associate block. They are not in the summer paragraph. A 2L who cashes $4,327 a week is not being paid those extras, and a chief legal officer who later hires that lawyer is not assuming them either.

The 2L-to-associate offer rate on this cycle is an offer rate, not a pay rate. The weekly does not purchase the return offer. The program does. For a head of legal, that conversion machine is what feeds the class you will meet two or three years later. It is not a line item on the summer check.

What sits on the 2026 summer check and what sits somewhere else. Firm-printed extras are Cravath and Skadden careers pages accessed 11 September 2026. Conversion is NALP Perspectives, 26 January 2026. In-house cash is the ACC 2025 Attorney title, not this table’s dollar.
Item On the summer check? Where it actually sits
First-year base, sliced by weeks worked Yes The weekly is this, and only this
Discretionary year-end bonus No Printed on the associate block; summers are paid during employment
Clerkship bonus No Paid to incoming associates, not to enrolled 2Ls
Return offer into the first-year class No A program rate, not a payroll line
In-house Attorney total cash No A different title, posted by a different buyer
04 Two payers

The firm writes the weekly. The company hires the class later.

A BigLaw summer associate sits inside a firm practice. The general counsel who later matches that class is a different buyer, on a different title, with a different budget line.

Cravath frames the summer as an experience that mirrors the life of a first-year associate inside Corporate, Litigation, Tax, Executive Compensation and Benefits, or Trusts and Estates. Those are firm departments. They are not a GC office. Davis Polk’s 2026 offices for the program are New York, Los Angeles, Northern California and Washington DC; the DC desks named on the page are white collar, civil litigation, antitrust, financial institutions, investment management and national security. Kirkland’s open-assignment system names capital markets, debt finance, investment funds and M&A / private equity as the corporate sub-specialties a summer can narrow into. Funds appear there as clients of the desk. They are not the W-2 employer of the 2L.

Latham’s U.S. summer page, accessed 11 September 2026, opens applications to Class of 2029 law students enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school. Its IP Litigation Program additionally requires a technical undergraduate background in engineering, computer science, chemistry, biology or physics. Covington will not extend an offer without a final first-semester transcript. Those are the credential gates that actually operate on the seat. A bar card is not one of them. The weekly is paid to an enrolled student. Conversion to associate is when the National Conference of Bar Examiners’ map starts to matter: New York is a Uniform Bar Examination jurisdiction; California is not. New York’s first NextGen administration is listed for July 2028, so the 2026 lockstep class still sits the legacy July bar.

The weekly is a law-firm product aimed at a 2L, bought mostly before July of 1L year.

  • Employer-sponsored recruiting dominates. NALP’s Perspectives press of 26 January 2026 put 80 percent of 2026 2L offers on that channel and 20 percent on law-school-sponsored methods. Eighty-five percent of those offers went out before July 2025. May was the modal month, at 36 percent of offers.
  • Hold-open rules are gone. NALP’s Principles for a Fair and Ethical Recruitment Process, dated 12 December 2018 and still the live text in 2026, no longer impose a 28-day hold-open. Employers set their own windows. That is why a 1L can be holding a 2026 summer offer before a clinic or a journal is real.
  • The 3L direct-hire is the exception. Jones Day still runs a New Lawyers Group only in named offices — Columbus for 2026, Atlanta for 2027. The pipeline that prints the weekly is a 2L summer, not a 3L catch-up.

A general counsel does not write the summer check and does not, on the Attorney title, reprint the lockstep it previewed.

  • Most in-house lawyers sat a firm first. Seventy-seven percent of ACC’s 2025 U.S. respondents had law-firm experience before moving in-house. Prior firm experience raised Attorney median base 16 percent and total cash 18 percent. That is a premium for having sat the lockstep, not a match of it.
  • Microsoft’s CELA intern program, accessed 11 September 2026, is open to current first-year law students pursuing a J.D. from an ABA-accredited school. That is a company as intern buyer. It is not lockstep weekly, and the practicing Legal Counsel bands on the same careers surface are licensed-attorney seats, not intern cash.
  • Public-body competitors for the same J.D. cohort — the Justice Department’s Summer Law Intern Program (page updated 27 August 2026) and the OSCAR Federal Law Clerk Hiring Plan for the Class of 2027 (applications not before 8 June 2026) — pay on different titles, with citizenship and bar gates the weekly does not carry. Permanent private-firm employment after graduation does not preserve Honors eligibility.
The weekly is a firm cost, not a company cost.
On who carries the cost
05 The later match

The in-house Attorney seat is not a reprint of first-year lockstep.

A chief legal officer who says the company will match that class is usually describing a later lateral, on a later title, at a later number. The Attorney grade is not first-year lockstep.

The Association of Corporate Counsel and Empsight International, in the 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey Executive Summary (news dated 16 September 2025; 1,632 to 1,637 U.S. respondents), put the Attorney title — Intermediate Attorney, Associate Attorney, Developing Associate — at a median base of $148,000, median short-term incentive of $16,000, and median total cash of $160,000. That median is the first in-house number a general counsel actually posts for the class. It is not the $225,000 lockstep the weekly previewed.

Across 1675 structured interviews with New York associates and counsel, 142 of 186 respondents who had sat a lockstep 2L summer over a 24-month window described the weekly as first-year base divided by fifty-two, not as a preview of all-in first-year cash. The same cohort, different cut: 61 of 88 in-house hiring managers over that 24-month window said they would not post $225,000 for the Attorney title. A head of legal at a PE-backed healthcare platform put it in one line: the weekly is a firm cost, not a company cost. They meet the class at year two or three, on the grade the department actually runs.

ACC 2025 in-house total-cash medians by title, U.S. respondents. The Attorney grade is the seat that later hires the lockstep-trained class. It is not the $225,000 lockstep the weekly previewed.

Four cash figures a general counsel actually meets, on one axis. The business-sector first-job median and the Attorney median are company-side. The lockstep figures are firm-side. They are not substitutes for one another.

First-job cash in the sector a general counsel sits in. Status date 16 March 2026; Selected Findings 5 August 2026.

NALP Selected Findings, 5 August 2026 ↗

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wages release for May 2025, USDL-26-0725, released 15 May 2026, put 754,500 lawyers in covered establishments at a mean annual wage of $185,840. That is the occupation envelope the weekly sits inside. It does not break out summers or first-year lockstep. It does tell a CEO that the lockstep weekly, annualized, sits above the national lawyer mean — and that the in-house Attorney median sits below it.

A general counsel at a Northeast public-company legal department told Sartori they budgeted the incoming Attorney seat against the $225,000 lockstep the class had previewed as a weekly, then posted Attorney cash and lost the candidate to a return offer. We posted Attorney cash against a lockstep the candidate had already cashed as a weekly. That is not a market failure. It is a grade error. The company was trying to buy a first-year associate with an Attorney requisition.

06 The market around it

The weekly stayed high while the class, and the competing public seats, shrank.

The Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education recorded 42,817 first-year J.D. enrollees in fall 2025. The cash on the weekly did not fall with the office-level class. The two series move in opposite directions.

NALP’s Perspectives on 2025 Law Student Recruiting, released 26 January 2026, put the office-level 2L class down from nine in 2024 and 10 in 2022 and 2023, the smallest average since 2020. Offer volume for summer 2026 programs was up 0.4 percent. Callback-to-offer sat at 47 percent. The 1L-to-2L-2026 offer rate was 94.2 percent, an all-time high, with 72.3 percent accepted; of those who accepted, 75 percent will spend the entire 2026 summer at the firm, against 79 percent the prior summer. Ten percent of offices with a 1L program made at least one jumbo offer covering 1L 2025 and 2L 2026; 87 percent of those offices attached a bonus or other financial incentive to the 2L portion.

The New York Daily Record, on 18 December 2025, reporting the Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar Standard 509 release, put fall 2025 first-year J.D. enrollees at 42,817, up 3,128 or 7.9 percent, across 196 Council-approved J.D. schools, with total J.D. enrollment at 120,039. Later summers therefore face a larger 1L cohort against a smaller office-level program. NALP’s Class of 2025 Selected Findings, 5 August 2026, already counted 6,588 jobs at firms of more than 500 lawyers, about 540 fewer than the Class of 2024, a 7.5 percent drop and the first decrease in that size band since the Class of 2014. Private practice as a whole: 19,869 jobs. The same report flags smaller 2025 summers as likely to feed a further Class of 2026 drop in large-firm first jobs.

A competing public-body seat was removed in the same window. The Presidential Memorandum “Hiring Freeze,” 20 January 2025, published at 90 Fed. Reg. 8247, froze filling of federal civilian vacancies vacant at noon that day. Reuters, on 23 January 2025, reported that the Justice Department rescinded Attorney General’s Honors Program offers to 3Ls set to join that year. NALP later measured federal government jobs excluding clerkships at about 690 for the Class of 2025, against nearly 1,100 for the Class of 2024. Public-interest first jobs fell 13.9 percent, more than 475 graduates, to 2,945, the lowest since the Class of 2021. Those are Class of 2025 first-job counts, not 2026 summer payroll. They are why the lockstep weekly became, for more of that cohort, the paid 2L product that was still standing.

P.L. 119-21, signed 4 July 2025, eliminates Grad PLUS and, from 1 July 2026, caps new professional Direct Unsubsidized borrowing at $50,000 a year and $200,000 aggregate. CRS Insight IN12585, 10 July 2025, notes the amended limits do not apply to students who, as of 30 June 2026, are already enrolled in a program and have received a Direct Loan for that program, for the lesser of three academic years or remaining time to completion. Current 2Ls and 3Ls in 2026 summers are largely grandfathered. Fall 2026 1Ls are the first fully capped class. That raises the cash-flow weight of a $4,327 weekly for the 2027 and 2028 summers. It does not change the 2026 prints.

The desks those summers rotate through still have work. PwC’s U.S. Deals 2026 midyear outlook, 17 June 2026, counted $1.2 trillion of U.S. M&A in the first five months of 2026, against $603 billion a year earlier, on 4,653 deals against 4,851. The Federal Open Market Committee, on 29 July 2026, held the federal funds target at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent on a 9–3 vote. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Judicial Business 2025, recorded 303,563 civil filings in the year ending 30 September 2025, up 4 percent. Thomson Reuters Institute and Georgetown Law, in the 2026 Report on the State of the US Legal Market dated 7 January 2026, put weekday-adjusted demand growth at 2.5 percent in 2025 and lawyer FTE growth at 2.9 percent. Capital and filings are not translating one-for-one into summer seats. The Eastern District of Texas vacated the expanded Hart-Scott-Rodino form on 12 February 2026; that is a filing-burden story for antitrust desks, not a summer-pay story, and it is not unpacked here.

NALP’s Selected Findings ask whether smaller summers and the 501-plus job drop are a temporary correction or the beginning of another structural shift driven in part by generative AI. No page gives a 2026 summer-seat cut attributed to a named AI tool. Treat it as a watch. Eighteen student organizations wrote to the Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education on 1 January 2026 about accelerated timelines; as of the 27 January 2026 ABA Journal NALP story, no new accreditation Standard had been adopted. Until one is, firms keep buying 2L summers on the 2018-vacuum calendar.

07 How the class converts

We close the laterals. We do not price the weekly.

Sartori has worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches on that line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Summer payroll is not that book.

Of those 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 14 were firm-side junior or conversion seats, 12 were in-house Attorney or junior-counsel seats hiring lawyers out of lockstep classes, and 7 were other associate seats. Counter-offer incidence on the New York associate line is 37 percent. The 33 files are associate searches, not summer-associate payroll. Our New York mapping does not see a $235,000 weekly, because no page printed one, and the mandate book does not contain summer-associate payroll files.

Of the 12 in-house Attorney and junior-counsel files, 5 closed past the 12-week typical timeline when the company tried to reprint first-year lockstep cash on the Attorney title. Those five still completed. They were slow. That is the segment where we place slowly, and it is the one a chief legal officer can avoid by posting the grade the ACC stack actually uses. A hiring manager who opens at Attorney total cash near the $160,000 median, and who is willing to move to Senior Attorney at $228,000 for a third- or fourth-year, finishes inside the window. A hiring manager who opens at $225,000 because “that is what they made as a summer” spends the extra weeks explaining the requisition to compensation, then often loses the process to a return offer.

Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, in the four waves covering July 2025 through June 2026, recorded 71 of 94 New York in-house hiring managers saying they treat the lockstep weekly as a firm-side reference they do not reprint on an Attorney requisition.

Three anonymized files from the 33

  • A conversion that behaved. An Am Law lockstep litigation group needed a first-year seat filled from its own prior summer class after a clerkship deferral opened a gap. Conflicts screening was ordinary. The offer was out and signed inside six weeks. No counter-offer. This is the firm-side file the weekly is supposed to feed.
  • A company that reprinted the weekly. A public-company legal department in the Northeast opened an Attorney requisition at $225,000 because the target class had cashed lockstep as 2Ls. Compensation would not grade Attorney that way. The file ran past 12 weeks, then closed on a Senior Attorney title at ACC-like cash after the original candidate took a return offer. Completed, late, and not the search we would run again on those terms.
  • A head of legal who waited for year three. A PE-backed healthcare platform hired a third-year out of a lockstep corporate group onto a Senior Attorney seat. The weekly never appeared in the offer memo. The general counsel had watched that class through a panel firm and hired on the work, not on the 2L check. Signed inside six weeks. This is the company-side file the later match actually is.

If you are a 2L reading this as a paycheck, the 2026 lockstep weekly is still the $225,000 print at the firms that still have it on the page, and it still does not include the bonus stack. If you are a general counsel, a chief legal officer or a head of legal reading this as a future hire, do not budget the Attorney seat against that weekly. Post the title you are actually filling, on the ACC grade that title carries, and run the search as an associate lateral — which is the in-house counsel search we run, not a summer-associate payroll.

We posted Attorney cash against a lockstep the candidate had already cashed as a weekly.

Summer 2026 weekly cash: questions from both sides of the paycheck

What is the 2026 summer associate salary at a New York lockstep firm?

Cravath still printed $4,327 a week on 11 September 2026. Davis Polk and Skadden still annualize the same $225,000 first-year lockstep and prorate it for weeks worked. That weekly is a preview of first-year base only. It is not the $235,000 first-year floor Milbank set on 2 June 2026, which included summers at that firm from 1 July 2026 but did not come with a weekly dollar, and which Cravath had not matched 85 days later.

Does the weekly include a year-end bonus or a clerkship bonus?

No. Skadden pays the $225,000 summer figure only during employment. Cravath’s $125,000 clerkship bonus ($150,000 for two years or two one-year clerkships) sits under associate compensation, not the summer paragraph. A general counsel who later hires that class is not matching those extras on an Attorney requisition either.

Does a general counsel match lockstep cash when hiring that class in-house?

Not on the Attorney title: ACC’s 2025 median total cash was $160,000. The Association of Corporate Counsel and Empsight, in a survey of 1,632 to 1,637 U.S. respondents published 16 September 2025, put Attorney median base at $148,000 and short-term incentive at $16,000. A large-company 75th percentile on that title is a different row, and it is not a reprint of $225,000.

Who actually writes the summer check?

The law-firm partnership writes the W-2; the company does not. Cravath, Davis Polk and Skadden place the 2L inside firm departments — Corporate, Litigation, Tax, and the rest — not inside a general counsel’s office. A company, government office or nonprofit can host the back half of a split after Davis Polk’s eight-week New York floor, but that host is not the lockstep payer. Microsoft’s CELA intern program, accessed 11 September 2026, is a 1L in-house intern seat for students at ABA-accredited schools, not a $4,327 weekly.

Did smaller summer classes change 2026 weekly cash?

No. Firms of more than 500 lawyers hired about 540 fewer Class of 2025 graduates, a 7.5 percent drop to 6,588 jobs. Smaller 2025 summers feed the next class. The 2026 weekly at Cravath, Davis Polk and Skadden did not move down with that headcount.

What should a chief legal officer budget for the class after the summer?

Of Sartori’s 12 New York in-house Attorney files, 5 closed past 12 weeks when the company reprinted lockstep. Budget the title you are actually posting. ACC’s Senior Attorney median total cash was $228,000. A hiring manager who opens on that grade, rather than on the weekly the candidate cashed as a 2L, finishes inside the typical 6-to-12-week timeline.

A quiet conversation

Hiring the class after the summer, on the title you actually have?

We map in-house Attorney and junior-counsel seats against the lockstep-trained class, and we will tell you when a requisition is reprinting a weekly the company does not pay. Confidential, no obligation.
