Weil Gotshal salary 2026: the last public cell, the bonus, and partner PEP

No 2026 Weil scale letter is on the record as of 30 September 2026. The dated U.S. cell a general counsel must match this year is still the last public base — $225,000 to $435,000, effective 1 January 2024 — plus the 25 November 2025 bonus match.

02 The last public cell

What the last public Weil Gotshal salary cell actually is

Bloomberg Law, 5 December 2023: Weil matched a Big Law scale that runs from $225,000 for first years to $435,000 for most senior associates, effective 1 January 2024. That is still the dated U.S. base in the file.

The assigned question on this page is a 2026 question. The honest answer opens on an absence. Above the Law's 2026 associate-raise scorecard lists 27 named-firm rows and does not list Weil. The latest raise row is Troutman Pepper Locke on 17 September 2026; the latest special-bonus row is Cahill Gordon on 24 September 2026. Sullivan & Cromwell is on that list, dated 26 June 2026. Weil is not. David Lat, writing on 18 June 2026, had already omitted Weil from the early Am Law 100 names he gave: Milbank, McDermott Will & Schulte, Quinn Emanuel, Katten, and Susman Godfrey. A 27 July 2026 Above the Law piece said the bulk of Biglaw had yet to match. The September scorecard is the later record, and Weil is still absent.

What a general counsel can put in a board paper is therefore narrower, and more useful, than a guessed 2026 ladder. Bloomberg Law reported on 5 December 2023 that Weil, with Ropes & Gray and White & Case, was matching a scale from $225,000 for first years to $435,000 for most senior associates, and that Weil's new salary scale would go into effect on 1 January, in a Monday email the publication had viewed. That is lockstep U.S. associate base pay by class year, in its 2024 vintage. It is not all-in cash, not counsel, and not partner draw.

The dollar steps are Weil's own, and they are 2024 steps. Above the Law on 4 December 2023 reproduced the Management Committee memo sent that afternoon: bases effective 1 January 2024 of class of 2023 $225,000, class of 2022 $235,000, class of 2021 $260,000, class of 2020 $310,000, class of 2019 $365,000, class of 2018 $390,000, class of 2017 $420,000, and class of 2016 and more senior $435,000. Bloomberg Law the next day reported the same floor and ceiling. The memo said salary increases for elevation in class year are paid with the bonus and made retroactive to 1 January. The 22 November 2024 memo repeated that rule. Weil has not published a later base grid, so the same dollar steps, moved forward by that rule, put the class of 2025 on $225,000 and the class of 2018 and more senior on $435,000. That is class progression on a 2024 scale, not a 2026 Weil letter. The ABA Journal on 19 November 2025 restated Cravath's bases for 1 January 2026, and they were still this ladder, before Milbank moved the market on 2 June 2026. The market-wide lockstep that moved in June lives on the BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026 and on the Cravath scale page; this article does not restate it as Weil's.

Sortable — Weil U.S. associate bases from the 4 December 2023 Management Committee memo, effective 1 January 2024 ($225,000–$435,000), stepped forward two class years by that memo's elevation rule, plus the 2025 year-end and special bonuses Weil matched on 25 November 2025. Junior and senior bonus endpoints are Weil-tracker cells. Intermediate bonus cells are the Cravath table Weil matched. All-in is base plus both published bonus layers. The bases are 2024. This is not a 2026 Weil letter.

Class of 2018+ 8th year & senior $435,000 $115,000 $25,000 $575,000

Class labels are the 4 December 2023 dollar steps after that memo's elevation rule, aligned to the 2025 bonus season (class of 2025 on the junior rung). A 2026 first-year sits on the same $225,000 base unless Weil publishes a match. Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard, through 17 September 2026, does not list one. See sources.

The dated cell a general counsel must match this year is still the 2024 base.

03 The bonus match

Weil bonus 2025: a dated match, no hours floor, a January check

Weil matched the market year-end and special bonuses on 25 November 2025. The hours cell on the tracker is None. Counsel is not on the table.

Above the Law reported on 25 November 2025 that Weil was matching the market bonus and special bonuses, with payout on 30 January 2026. The same day's bonus tracker recorded Weil Gotshal at class of 2025 $15,000 / $6,000 prorated and class of 2018+ $115,000 / $25,000, hours “None,” paid 30 January 2026. Law360 Pulse, at 2:50 p.m. Eastern the same Tuesday, wrote that Weil Gotshal & Manges had joined other firms in matching the BigLaw standard for that year's associate bonuses. As of the same 2026 scorecard, no 2026 Weil bonus memo is public. Milbank's 27 July 2026 specials ($6,000 to $25,000) and Cahill Gordon's 24 September 2026 match of those specials are rows on that bonus table. Weil is not.

Those tracker endpoints sit on the Cravath grid the ABA Journal printed on 19 November 2025: class of 2025 $15,000 year-end plus $6,000 special (prorated, $21,000 combined); 2024 $20,000 plus $6,000; 2023 $30,000 plus $10,000; 2022 $57,500 plus $15,000; 2021 $75,000 plus $20,000; 2020 $90,000 plus $25,000; 2019 $105,000 plus $25,000; 2018 $115,000 plus $25,000. The Journal noted, citing Law360, that the bonus scale had been the same since 2021. Weil did not publish a 2025 PDF of the intermediate cells the way it did in 2024; the endpoints are Weil's, the middle of the ladder is the market table Weil adopted.

The prior-year primary document is on the record and is worth keeping because it is Weil's own voice. Above the Law, on 22 November 2024, reproduced the Management Committee memo to all U.S. associates and counsel: bonuses paid 31 January 2025, subject to customary prorations; salary increases for elevation in class year paid on the same date and retroactive to 1 January; counsel compensation individually communicated at year-end review meetings. That last line is the one in-house buyers miss. There is no published counsel lockstep at this firm. A general counsel hiring a Weil counsel is not reading a class-year cell off a tracker.

The 2024 memo's class-year bonus table ran from class of 2024 at $15,000 / $6,000 prorated through class of 2017 and more senior at $115,000 / $25,000. It is a full Weil-attributed grid for that bonus year, and it is one year older than the 2025 match. Use it as a primary-document check on the shape of the ladder, not as 2025 or 2026 cash. Clerk hiring bonuses, on Weil's lateral page as accessed on 11 September 2026, are “based on current market factors and are competitive.” No dollar is published. Omit the amount.

Four pay products at Weil, and what is actually public for each. Associate lockstep is a dated cell. Counsel, clerks, and 2025-calendar partner PEP are not.

Weil PEP is an average of 173 equity partners, not a draw

The 2025 Am Law tables, covering 2024 performance, put Weil profits per equity partner at $5,371,000. That is the latest public partner number for this firm. It is not a named partner's pay.

Weil's 2024 profits per equity partner were $5,371,000 across 173 equity partners, in the 2025 Am Law tables. Wikipedia's Global 200 reproduction, citing Law.com International and retrieved 27 September 2025, carries the same PEP cell alongside 1,228 lawyers. The 17 April 2025 Am Law 100 PEP ranking put Weil at rank 15, with a 15.63 percent rise from 2023. Direct Law.com access to those ranking URLs timed out behind sign-in; the dollar cells also appear on the Global 200 table citing the 18 September 2025 Global 100 PEP ranking. Average PEP divides a pool. A rainmaker's draw can sit well above it, and a service partner's well below. Individual draws are not public.

Weil-specific 2025-performance Am Law cells — the 2026 report — were not public as of 30 September 2026 and are omitted here rather than inferred; every Weil partner-economics figure on this page is 2024 performance. The 2026 Am Law 100 cohort averages that Above the Law reported on 15 April 2026, and that David Lat restated on 30 April 2026, put Am Law 100 gross at $178.95 billion (up 13.0 percent), PEP at $3.59 million (up 14.0 percent), RPL at $1.39 million (up 8.7 percent), and attorney headcount at 128,868 (up about 4 percent), all on 2025 performance. Nonequity partners grew almost 7 percent against 2 percent equity growth. Those are industry-capacity figures. They do not name Weil in the top-ten PEP or RPL lists, and they are not a substitute for a missing Weil row.

Year-over-year, the 2023 gross cited by Above the Law on 22 November 2024 was $1,829,486,000, rank 26 on that year's Am Law 100. The 2025 gross-revenue ranking snippet recorded the subsequent step as 10.66 percent, rank 27, for 2024. Global Legal Post, on 26 November 2025, rounded the same year to “revenue of $2.02bn” and “profit per equity partner was $5.4m.” Treat $5.4 million as that publication's rounding of the $5,371,000 ALM cell, not a second measurement.

Weil 2023 and 2024 gross as published in the Am Law 100 cuts those years. Two points, not a forecast. 2025-performance gross is not on a public Weil row.

Above the Law, 22 November 2024 (2023 gross); 2025 Am Law 100 ranked by gross revenue (2024).

The 2026 partner class tells you where the firm is putting equity, which is the hiring-weighted read a general counsel actually needs. Of the 17 partners elected effective 1 January 2026, Global Legal Post recorded 11 in corporate, of which seven private equity / M&A, two banking and finance, one private funds, one regulatory transactions; four litigation (three complex commercial, one antitrust); two tax / executive compensation and benefits. Offices in that class included Boston, Dallas, London, Munich, New York, Paris, Silicon Valley, and Washington, D.C. ILRG's 2025 profile put 285 partners against the 1,228-attorney cut — equity plus nonequity — which is a different denominator from the 173 equity partners in the Am Law PEP row. Do not blend them.

Bloomberg Law, on 8 September 2026, quoted a Weil spokesman: 51 lateral partners hired since the start of 2025, including a combined 18 from Simpson Thacher and Latham, and 39 partners added in the prior year, the most in firm history. The same item recorded 2026 private-equity partners leaving Weil for Paul Weiss, DLA Piper, and McDermott Will & Emery, and Simpson Thacher taking New York private-funds and London energy and infrastructure M&A partners. Three days later, on 11 September 2026, Bloomberg Law reported that the chair of the 600-lawyer corporate practice had resigned and was expected to join Cravath with an M&A group. Weil's statement, in that coverage, was that the team was leaving for a smaller platform and that Weil intended to accelerate growth. Do not read an associate-headcount number out of those sentences; the public record does not yet measure openings.

Succession is dated. Weil, on 17 March 2026, named an incoming executive partner — then co-managing partner, co-head of U.S. private equity, and Boston co-managing partner — to take the role on 1 January 2027. The current executive partner chairs the management committee through year-end 2027, then retires from the partnership at the mandatory retirement age and becomes part-time Senior Counsel on 1 January 2028, including lateral partner recruitment. That is a 2026–2028 partner-and-counsel hiring window, with private-equity and Boston gravity in the incoming seat, not a first-year volume story.

Practice mix of the 17 partners elected effective 1 January 2026. Corporate is 11 of 17. This is a class composition, not a firmwide census.

05 Who matches it

The associate earns the cell. The general counsel has to pay it.

Two readers, one number. The U.S. class-year cell is earned inside Weil's lockstep and paid by the partnership — until a company hires that lawyer onto its own payroll.

The primary payer of the U.S. associate cell is the Weil partnership. Careers.weil.com, accessed 11 September 2026, describes 1,200 lawyers on three continents, spanning four departments — Corporate, Litigation, Restructuring, and Tax, Executive Compensation & Benefits — and more than two dozen practice groups. New York runs all four. Boston staffs Corporate and Litigation. Houston staffs Corporate and Restructuring. Dallas staffs Corporate and Tax. Los Angeles and San Francisco staff Corporate and Litigation. Austin, on that table, is litigation only. The lockstep a general counsel matches is a New York-headquartered Am Law firm associate scale, with satellite offices that do not all run every department.

Live labels on the apply page the same day were narrow and specific: a 2027 entry-level associate seat in New York, and a private equity associate seat in Boston. Weil actively recruits judicial clerks from U.S. federal appellate and district courts, bankruptcy courts, and the Delaware Court of Chancery; the dollar on those hiring bonuses is unpublished. The Weil Fellowship, for students at ABA-accredited law schools expecting to graduate in spring 2028, pays up to $50,000 — $25,000 on joining the entire 2027 2L summer program, the balance on starting as a full-time associate. That stipend is a pipeline, not the associate scale. Weil does not accept search-firm submissions for law-school or post-clerk candidates.

The in-house buyer of this talent is not theoretical. Weil's private-equity page, accessed 11 September 2026, states approximately 300 lawyers worldwide dedicated exclusively to private equity, and more than 300 private equity clients worldwide, including 8 of the 10 largest global private equity funds as ranked by PEI 300 2026. Client types named by the firm: PE funds, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, family offices, and other equity financial investors. Banking and finance sits next to that bench in New York, Dallas, Silicon Valley, London, Paris, and Frankfurt, for corporate borrowers, PE sponsors, and financial institutions. Restructuring is a separate department of more than 140 dedicated lawyers. Tax is more than 50 lawyers in U.S. and European offices. A 26 August 2024 Weil release described a private-equity partner whose immediately prior in-house title was Vice President of Corporate Development and Assistant General Counsel at a public digital-media company. That title pattern is the requisition a company general counsel actually posts.

The other in-house destinations follow the departments. A restructuring associate who has sat on debtor, creditor, or liability-management files moves to a creditor-side fund, a debtor in-house role, or a Deputy GC seat on a financial-institution leveraged-finance desk when Chapter 11 volumes rise. A complex-commercial or antitrust associate moves to a public-company M&A or securities counsel seat — the same public-M&A slice now in motion toward Cravath-scale platforms. A tax associate moves to a funds or sovereign-investor legal team. Weil's litigation department page records National Law Journal Litigation Department of the Year 2024, NLJ Antitrust Litigation Department of the Year 2025, and New York Law Journal Securities Litigation Department of the Year 2025; those are awards, not pay cells, but they tell a chief legal officer which in-house desks this alumni bench actually knows. Credential gates stay ordinary: an ABA-accredited J.D. and U.S. bar for the American lockstep; SQE plus Solicitors Regulation Authority admission for London.

Weil, on 1 October 2024, said the summer program ranked in the top five of Law360's 2024 summer-associate survey for a second consecutive year, after ranking first in 2023, with the American Lawyer placing the program 11th. Law360's sample was 583 responses between 13 June and 11 August 2024; the American Lawyer's was 3,077. Those are 2024 survey results; no 2026 Weil ranking is cited here. The summer program is a conversion machine for the 2027 New York first-year class, not a 2026 scale letter. NALP's homepage, accessed 11 September 2026, flagged a 15 July 2026 statement on law-student recruiting and a summer-program survey for the Class of 2028 / 2027 2L programs. The U.S. clock is compressed into the 2026 OCI season. The London clock is not: Weil UK Recruiting recruits training contracts only through vacation schemes, with 2027 schemes dated 15–25 March and 30 March–9 April 2027 on the Prospects profile updated August 2026.

Who earns itWho pays it next

  1. The Weil partnership U.S. associate lockstep, individually set counsel, London NQ, and average PEP. This is the first payer.
  2. Peer Am Law 50 platforms The same partner layer moves to Cravath-scale and PE-platform firms. The associate cell moves with the team, or it does not.
  3. The company general counsel A PE sponsor, a public-company M&A desk, a bank, or a distressed-corporate legal department matching the published class-year cell onto an in-house seat.

If you sit on the U.S. lockstep, the 2026 question is whether Weil has matched the June raise. On the public record, it has not.

  • Read the last letter, not the rumor. The dated Weil base is still the January 2024 cell. A circulating June PDF with another firm's letterhead is not your offer.
  • Price January cash as cash. The 2025 special sat on the tracker with no hours floor. A company that calls it discretionary is asking you to give it up.
  • London is a different ladder. Newly qualified pay on Weil UK Recruiting, still the published 2026 figure, is £170,000. The path runs through vacation schemes and the SQE. It does not convert the New York cell.
  • Counsel is a conversation, not a grid. The 2024 memo said so in writing. Do not interpolate a class-year bonus onto a counsel seat.

If you are the general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal matching this lawyer, the first number on the term sheet is the published class-year cell, not an in-house survey.

  • Match base and the special. Omitting the special layer is how first-choice candidates walk; the associate is sitting on a published January cell.
  • Do not import the June market ask as Weil's. Price a possible future match as a scenario, and say so to the compensation committee.
  • Budget the counter. The firm has a published January check to defend, and it uses it.
  • Title the seat the way the work is titled. Associate General Counsel / Principal at a PE sponsor, Deputy GC on a leveraged-finance desk, VP of Corporate Development and Assistant General Counsel at a public company. The lockstep cell does not rename the job.

A general counsel at a mega-cap alternative-asset manager put the sequencing to us without decoration: the compensation committee asked for the Weil / Cravath class-year cell before it asked for an in-house band. That is the buyer's question this page is built on. The in-house counsel recruiting desk and the PE portfolio legal recruiting practice are the service views of the same match.

06 What funds the payroll

Mega-deals, Chapter 11, and a rate that keeps LME alive

The payroll is not an abstract lockstep. It is paid out of a 2026 deal and restructuring docket whose volumes are public even when Weil's 2026 scale letter is not.

LSEG Deals Intelligence, in a 1 July 2026 Reuters reprint, put announced global M&A at $2.8 trillion in the first half of 2026, up 48 percent year on year and the highest first half since LSEG records began in 1980. Deal count fell 9 percent to 24,000, a six-year low. Forty-seven deals above $10 billion totaled more than $1.3 trillion. Technology was $649 billion. Investment-grade corporate debt issues reached $3.4 trillion, up 10 percent, a record year-to-date. That is a senior M&A, private-equity, banking, capital-markets, and antitrust staffing story, not a junior-volume factory: count is down, ticket size is up.

The antitrust seat on those tickets is statutory. The Department of Justice Antitrust Division's page for the 2023 Merger Guidelines, accessed 11 September 2026, still listed the 18 December 2023 joint release and the 18 February 2025 Acting Assistant Attorney General memorandum on their use. Clayton Act section 7 remains the statute. Fox Corporation, on 15 June 2026, named Weil as legal counsel on its cash-and-stock acquisition of Roku at about $22 billion. Variety, on 9 September 2026, reported a Department of Justice second request dated 8 September 2026, extending the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period, with close targeted for the first half of 2027. Mega-deals create long antitrust staffing, not a one-week spike.

The Federal Open Market Committee, meeting 29–30 July 2026, held the federal funds target range at 3.50 to 3.75 percent; nine members maintained the range, three dissented for a 25-basis-point increase. Inflation remained elevated relative to the 2 percent goal. Floating-rate private-equity portfolios under that range keep banking, liability-management, and restructuring mid-to-senior seats busy. Weil, on 15 July 2026, named a new Global Chair of Restructuring and stated that the firm was currently advising on over 25 liability-management exercises in 2026 alone, totaling over $35 billion in liabilities. Treat that $35 billion / 25-plus as firm-stated 2026 activity, not a court docket count.

The docket that sits behind the historic debtor franchise is measured. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, on 4 February 2026, reported 9,201 Chapter 11 filings in the twelve months ending 31 December 2025, against 8,884 in 2024, 7,456 in 2023, and 4,918 in 2022. Business filings were 24,737. Epiq AACER, via ABF Journal on 7 January 2026, put commercial Chapter 11 at 7,940 and subchapter V elections at 2,446, up 11 percent. Subchapter V, created by the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019, is a middle-market siphon. It does not automatically staff a mega Chapter 11 bench. Weil's restructuring page states that the firm has been chief debtors' counsel in 6 of the 10 largest U.S. bankruptcy filings in history. Those historic files are illustrations of franchise, not a 2026 matter list.

Deal calendarTalent calendar

  1. Mega-deal corporate Fewer deals, larger tickets, a long Hart-Scott-Rodino tail. Senior M&A, PE, finance, and antitrust, not a first-year factory.
  2. Restructuring and LME Chapter 11 volume still rising, subchapter V peeling off the small cases, liability-management sitting next to the debtor bench.
  3. Retention overlay A first-mover scale reset, a bonus season already matched, a succession date, and a partner outflow to Cravath-scale platforms.

Geography shifted under the same payroll. Reuters, on 9 July 2024, reported Weil opening Los Angeles and San Francisco with private-equity laterals from Latham & Watkins; a U.S. PE co-chair said the expansion also drives growth in tax, finance, and executive compensation, with Silicon Valley kept from 1991 and Asia consolidated through Hong Kong after the Beijing and Shanghai exits. Weil's own 9 July 2024 release put the Los Angeles office in Century City and San Francisco downtown. A further PE partner moved into Los Angeles on 26 August 2024. Bloomberg Law, on 8 September 2026, recorded two more PE partners into San Francisco, announced 31 August 2026. Careers pages in 2026 still list Los Angeles and San Francisco recruiting contacts for Corporate and Litigation. That is a 2024–2026 California PE associate and counsel demand line, not a first-year China story.

Germany followed on a private-capital cycle. Weil, on 2–3 October 2025, added two PE partners into Frankfurt and Munich, one to become Germany co-managing partner as a restructuring-weighted co-managing partner left at year-end 2025, taking the German offices to 10 partners and 9 counsel. On 7 October 2025 the firm added four more from the same Latham team — a partner, a counsel, two associates — taking the offices to 11 partners and 10 counsel. Global Legal Post the same day counted six lawyers in total. English-law London PE remains the hub; Frankfurt and Munich are local-qualified PE/M&A seats. Mainland China is closed: Law.asia, on 13 August 2024, recorded the Shanghai close, ending a roughly 20-year mainland presence, with Hong Kong listed as the only Asia branch. Weil's locations page in 2026 still shows 15 offices in 6 countries and more than 300 lawyers practicing outside the United States. Chambers Global 2026 recorded 102 practice-area and individual rankings across the four departments.

Subchapter V is the statute that stops a general counsel from reading the Chapter 11 print as a Weil-staffing forecast. The U.S. Courts Bankruptcy Basics pages, accessed 11 September 2026, describe small-business chapter 11 via BAPCPA 2005 (11 U.S.C. § 101(51C)) and subchapter V created by the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019 (Pub. L. 116-54, effective 19 February 2020, 11 U.S.C. §§ 1181–1195): only the debtor may file a plan (§ 1189), and no separate disclosure statement is required unless the court orders one (§ 1181(b)). Mega Chapter 11 is not sub V. The Epiq commercial series rising 11 percent in subchapter V elections is a middle-market fact. It does not staff the 140-lawyer restructuring department.

Google Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on 25 August 2026 with Weil as a launch customer, alongside a proprietary litigation-intelligence tool Weil said was built by lawyers and an in-house group. PR Newswire the same day listed contract review, M&A documentation, regulatory scanning, DSAR, and redaction among the product skills. David Lat, on 18 June 2026, had already flagged the open question whether associate pay raises coexist with AI substitution. The public record does not answer it for this firm: no associate-headcount cut was announced, and the 2027 New York first-year posting was live on the same 11 September 2026 check. Weil, on 12 August 2026, said it had been named to The American Lawyer A-List and had risen four spots to rank No. 15 among the Top 20; ranking factors named by the firm were revenue per lawyer, pro bono, associate satisfaction, and inclusion. That is a rank, not a pay cell.

07 How we price a match

Base-only offers stall. The special is the search.

Sartori has worked the New York associate market since 2017. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches on that line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6-to-12-week timeline.

Sartori & Partners maps approximately 67,000 lawyers in New York. The global research program behind that coverage has run quarterly market surveys since 2019 and maps 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles worldwide. Findings below come from that same New York cohort and from mandate telemetry on the 33 closed associate files. lead="Sartori has worked the New York associate market since 2017. The global research program behind that coverage has run quarterly market surveys since 2019 and maps 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles worldwide. Findings below come from that same New York cohort and from mandate telemetry on the 33 closed associate files.

Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 14 were company-side private-equity, M&A, finance, or restructuring seats where the hiring general counsel asked us to price against a named Am Law 50 lockstep cell. Across that cohort, 61 of 88 general counsel and heads of legal at PE sponsors, banks, and public companies over a 24-month window named the published class-year cell as the first number they needed when hiring a Weil-trained mid-level, not an in-house survey. Our New York associate mandate telemetry records a 37 percent counter-offer incidence on those 33 closed files, and a median of 11 working days from offer to signature.

Two clocks sit on every company-side brief. Search time-to-fill on this New York associate line is typically 6 to 12 weeks. Offer-to-acceptance, once the number is right, is 11 working days. Companies that confuse the two clocks — that spend the first ten weeks assembling a shortlist and then open a compensation debate in week eleven — are the ones that meet the firm's counter. The special-bonus layer is not a closing flourish. It is a line on the term sheet in week one, next to the class-year base, with the tracker hours cell quoted as none. A chief legal officer who wants a conservative case also prices a scenario in which Weil later matches the June 2026 market ask: $10,000 on the junior rungs, $20,000 on the senior rungs, still not a published Weil cell, and labeled as a scenario when it goes to the committee.

The finding that does not flatter us is the one that makes the rest usable. Of those 14 company-side lockstep-priced searches, 5 reopened compensation after the first offer because the company had matched base and omitted the special-bonus layer. 4 of those 5 lost the first-choice candidate. The associate was not being difficult. The associate was sitting on a published January cash cell, with an hours floor the tracker recorded as none, and the company had decided the special was discretionary. We still closed those files — they sit inside the 33 — but we closed them on a second candidate, past the typical 6-to-12-week window, after a counter the firm was structurally well placed to make. A head of legal at a listed private-equity platform described the miss in one clause: they matched the $365,000 fifth-year base and treated the $20,000 special as a signing extra they could skip. The candidate stayed. That is not a culture story. It is arithmetic the tracker already published.

Two composite mandates

A New York general counsel at a mega-cap alternative-asset manager asked us to hire a fifth-year private-equity associate off an Am Law 50 lockstep onto an Associate General Counsel / Principal seat. We closed in 10 weeks, inside the usual 6-to-12-week band. The first offer matched the last-public $365,000 fifth-year base and omitted the $20,000 special. The firm counter-offered. The company matched the special on the second conversation. Signature took 11 working days from the revised offer, which is the median on this line.

A listed digital-media company posting a Vice President, Corporate Development and Assistant General Counsel seat priced a fourth-year M&A associate on base only. The process ran 14 weeks and died on the first-choice candidate, who stayed for the January special. We closed the file on a second name. That mandate is one of the 5 that had to reopen pay, and one of the 4 that lost the first-choice lawyer. The lesson for a chief legal officer is not subtle: if the tracker published the special, it is part of the cell. When the brief is a company-side match against this lockstep, we run it as an in-house search with a published comparator, not as a law-firm lateral. The service pages that correspond are associate recruiting for the earner and in-house counsel recruiting for the payer. Partner-layer moves that sit next to this associate cell belong on partner pay at the Am Law top 50 and on lateral partner recruiting.

Questions from both sides of the cell

What is the Weil Gotshal salary for U.S. associates in 2026?

Weil's last public U.S. base is $225,000 to $435,000, effective 1 January 2024, in the Management Committee memo Above the Law reproduced on 4 December 2023. There is no 2026 Weil scale letter: Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard, through 17 September 2026, does not list Weil. A general counsel matching this firm in 2026 is matching that 2024 base plus the 25 November 2025 bonus, not a published 2026 reset. The market-wide June 2026 ladder ($235,000 to $455,000, Milbank, effective 1 July 2026) sits on our BigLaw associate salary scale page; it is not Weil's table.

What Weil bonus did associates receive for 2025?

Weil matched the market year-end and special bonuses on 25 November 2025, with class-of-2025 $15,000 / $6,000 prorated and class-of-2018+ $115,000 / $25,000, paid 30 January 2026. Above the Law's 2025 bonus tracker recorded those endpoints and an hours cell of “None.” Intermediate class-year cells are the Cravath grid announced 18 November 2025, which the ABA Journal printed in full the next day. No Weil bonus memo for the 2026 bonus year is public as of 30 September 2026.

What is Weil Gotshal partner salary, and what does Weil PEP actually measure?

Weil's profits per equity partner were $5,371,000 on 2024 performance across 173 equity partners, in the 2025 Am Law tables; that is an average, not a named partner's draw. The same cut put 2024 gross at $2,024,581,000 and 2024 revenue per lawyer at $1,649,000. The 2026 Am Law 100 (2025 performance) reported cohort averages only, and Weil's 2025-performance cells were not public as of 30 September 2026, so they are omitted rather than inferred.

How should a general counsel match a Weil-trained associate in-house?

Price the published class-year cell plus the special bonus; 5 of 14 company-side New York associate searches we closed had to reopen a base-only first offer. Sartori's New York associate desk closed 33 mandates over three years. Companies that match base and treat the special as discretionary lose the first-choice candidate more often than they expect, because the associate is sitting on a published January cash cell, not an in-house survey.

Does Weil pay the same Weil Gotshal associate salary in London?

No. Weil UK Recruiting still publishes a London newly qualified salary of £170,000, with trainees at £60,000 then £65,000 — the 2026 sterling ladder on that page, re-checked 7 October 2026 and unchanged, not a dollar conversion of the U.S. cell. The same page lists full PGDL and SQE sponsorship plus a £20,000 maintenance grant, and a cap of 15 trainees a year. A U.S. general counsel matching the dollar cell should not treat the sterling NQ figure as the same number.

Did Weil match the June 2026 Milbank associate raise?

No. Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard lists 27 named-firm raise rows and does not list Weil. The latest raise row is Troutman Pepper Locke on 17 September 2026. Sullivan & Cromwell matched on 26 June 2026; Weil did not. David Lat's 18 June 2026 list also omitted Weil. Milbank's 27 July 2026 special bonuses, and Cahill Gordon's 24 September 2026 match of those specials, are on the same scorecard. Weil is not. The 2 June 2026 PDF is a Milbank memorandum, effective 1 July 2026, not a Weil letter.

Associate bases are Weil's 4 December 2023 memo, effective 1 January 2024, after the memo's class-elevation rule. Not a 2026 Weil letter. Weil is absent from Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard through 17 September 2026. 2025 bonus endpoints are Weil's tracker cells; intermediate bonus cells are the Cravath table Weil matched. PEP, RPL and gross are 2024 performance in 2025 ALM tables. The 2026 Am Law open coverage has no Weil dollar row, so 2025-performance Weil cells are omitted. London NQ is the sterling ladder Weil UK Recruiting still publishes. All-in totals add published layers only.

Our own numbers — the New York interview cohort, the 33 closed associate searches, the 37 percent counter-offer incidence and the 11-day offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page.

A quiet conversation

Matching a Weil-trained lawyer onto your payroll?

We price the published class-year cell against the seat you actually need — PE, M&A, finance, restructuring, or the GC desk that has to sign for it. Confidential, no obligation.
