Lateral Partner – Tax Controversy

An Am Law 100 firm

Apply in confidence →

A lateral partner hire in this practice turns on what actually moves with you, far more than on any headline figure.

An established law firm is seeking a lateral partner to lead and grow its tax controversy practice. This is a key strategic hire for a growing practice that currently has a single partner focused on controversy work. The role is open across multiple U.S. offices.

The firm's tax practice is highly regarded, with a strong name brand in both tax generally and tax controversy specifically. The group advises high-net-worth individuals on cross-border income tax and transfer tax matters, alongside the controversy practice. The firm is a two-tier partnership with a collaborative, non-lockstep compensation structure and an active compensation committee.

The ideal candidate brings substantial litigation experience in tax controversy, with a proven record of client origination in private practice. This is an opportunity to join a collegial, collaborative tax group widely described as operating like an old-fashioned partnership, with unmatched quality of work and ethical standards.

  • Litigation experience in tax controversy (not solely audits and appeals on the administrative side)
  • Experience in private practice with a demonstrated track record of client origination
  • Portable book of business of $1M+ (USD)
  • Collegial, collaborative approach that fits a close-knit tax group
  • Counsel-level candidates with strong growth potential may also be considered
