A legal recruitment agency New Zealand companies use is not a Sydney desk with a longer flight. The New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa published provisional figures on July 2, 2026: 18,018 practicing lawyers as of June 30, 2026, the highest count it has recorded. Of those lawyers, 15,868 were barristers and solicitors and 2,150 were barristers. A further 1,477 were practicing overseas. The Society said the split will be confirmed in the Snapshot of the Profession 2026. Until that snapshot, the June 30, 2026 total is provisional, and it is the headcount a hiring brief should name.

The last confirmed snapshot is older and more detailed. As of June 30, 2025, the Society counted 17,504 lawyers holding a current practicing certificate. Of those, 16,119 were in New Zealand and 1,385 were overseas, which the snapshot states as one New Zealand-based lawyer for every 331 people. The total was 495 lawyers, or 2.9 percent, above the prior year. The provisional June 30, 2026 count is 514 higher than that 17,504. Treat 514 as arithmetic on two published totals, not as a growth rate the Society has certified.

The profession is fused at admission and split at the certificate. A person is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court. The practicing certificate is then either as a barrister or as a barrister and solicitor. That is why a lateral partner search and an in-house search draw on the same roll and then diverge: the in-house lawyer is almost always inside the certificate count, not beside it. As of June 30, 2025, 5,337 lawyers practiced in-house, 30.5 percent of the profession, and employees of law firms numbered 5,865. Women were 56.8 percent of practicing lawyers on the Society's December 12, 2025 note of the same snapshot. The in-house share is the fact a general counsel should budget against when the question is whether the local pool can staff a new legal department.

Private practice is a short list of full-service commercial firms in Auckland and Wellington, a large employed-associate layer, and an independent bar. Commercial firm names stay off the map. The hiring consequence is structural. A partner move is a portability and conflicts problem inside a small commercial market. An in-house move is a certificate-holder problem inside a group that was 5,337 people at the last snapshot, spread across companies, Crown entities, and government. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. The New Zealand slice of that book is narrower: 5 in-house searches and 2 lateral partner searches since 2019, 7 retained searches in total. Those seven are the New Zealand book since 2019, counted once. They are not a slice of another market's associate file.

Court volume says where disputes lawyers sit. The High Court of New Zealand's annual report for calendar 2025, published in 2026, recorded 2,435 new civil proceedings, up from 2,217 in 2024. A Commercial List began in Auckland on October 6, 2025, under a practice note of that date, with two dedicated judges managing eligible commercial cases through to trial. For a company, that list is a reason Auckland disputes partners are busy, not a reason to staff a Christchurch matter from an Auckland rolodex without asking where the file will be heard.

02 Major cities

Three branches hold most of the New Zealand bar.

Branch counts are Law Society geography as of June 30, 2025, not city-limit headcounts. Auckland, Wellington, and Canterbury Westland are the three a national search has to separate.

AKL

Auckland

The Auckland branch held 7,520 lawyers as of June 30, 2025, the largest branch in the snapshot. Commercial, funds, banking, and disputes work concentrates here, and the High Court Commercial List has sat in Auckland since October 6, 2025.

WLG

Wellington

The Wellington branch held 3,287 lawyers as of June 30, 2025. Government, Crown counsel, regulators, and a commercial bar share the city. A Wellington package is still a New Zealand dollar seat, not a converted Sydney scale.

CHC

Christchurch

Christchurch sits inside the Canterbury Westland branch, which held 1,888 lawyers as of June 30, 2025. The branch is the South Island commercial bar: insurance, agribusiness, construction, and disputes, not a separate national market.

The Auckland branch, 7,520 lawyers, is where a commercial general counsel search usually starts and should not automatically finish. Banking, funds, competition, overseas-investment, and large-scale disputes cluster there because the clients and the Commercial List are there. A first general counsel for an operating company with plants in the South Island may still need to live in Christchurch. The snapshot does not publish a Christchurch-city figure separate from the Canterbury Westland branch of 1,888. Use the branch number, and say so in the brief.

Wellington, 3,287 lawyers, is a different market wearing the same certificate. Crown Law, the regulatory agencies, and the parliamentary drafting function sit alongside a commercial bar. A compliance hire that will spend its first year in front of a conduct regulator is often a Wellington career, even when the employment contract says Auckland. Crown Counsel pay, below, is one of the few public in-house bands with a named average. It is not a private-sector general counsel band, and it is not a Sydney band.

Together those three branches held 12,695 of the 16,119 lawyers based in New Zealand as of June 30, 2025. The snapshot's own ordering puts Waikato Bay of Plenty next, then lawyers based overseas. Hamilton and Tauranga matter for employment, construction, and primary-industry counsel. Dunedin matters for a smaller commercial and university-adjacent bar. None of those centers has a separate city headcount in the snapshot. A search in Hamilton or Dunedin still runs from the national certificate register. The branch figure is the one that gets used.

Trans-Tasman comparisons belong on the Australia location hub and, inside it, on legal recruiters in Sydney. New Zealand lawyers admitted in an Australian state move under mutual recognition in that direction too. The traffic is real. The pay tables are not interchangeable. A company that prices an Auckland seat off a Sydney lockstep will miss the offer, which is why the compensation section uses Tahatū and Crown Law and nothing imported.

03 Foreign lawyers

Admission is the start date, not a paperwork item after acceptance.

Foreign lawyers do not practice New Zealand law on a visitor's visa and a home practicing certificate. The Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 reserves legal work. The route onto the roll is admission as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court, followed by a practicing certificate from the New Zealand Law Society. In-house counsel are inside that system. The 5,337 in-house lawyers in the 2025 snapshot are practicing-certificate holders. A general counsel seat that will give New Zealand-law advice to the company needs a person who can hold that certificate, or a timetable that gets them there before they give the advice.

Australian-admitted lawyers are the short path. The Law Society's Trans-Tasman page says a lawyer who holds a current Australian practicing certificate follows two steps under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997. First, admission in the High Court. It is not possible to be admitted only as a barrister or only as a solicitor. The application is form LA4 under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Lawyers: Admission) Rules 2008. The Society states the fee at NZ$229, made up of a NZ$162 filing fee and NZ$67 for the Registrar's certificate. Second, a New Zealand practicing certificate for the equivalent occupation, using the equivalency chart in the Trans-Tasman regulations. While practicing, the lawyer is subject to the 2006 Act and the rules under it. For a hiring company, that path is measured in the court and Society queue, not in a multi-year examination.

Everyone else applies to the New Zealand Council of Legal Education. The Council assesses overseas law qualifications and overseas admissions and can require further New Zealand university subjects, parts of the New Zealand Law and Practice Examination, a legal ethics course, the Professional Legal Studies Course, and an English-language test. Completion of whatever the Council imposes produces a completion certificate. The candidate then needs a certificate of character from the Law Society and an order of admission. The Council's examination page sets the 2026 New Zealand Law and Practice Examination sitting for November 24 and 25, 2026, at Auckland, Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago. The November 2026 New Zealand-venue application form sets the cutoff at October 23, 2026, and the fee at NZ$917.70 including GST per part. A search that offers in June and expects a non-Australian foreign lawyer to be practicing in July has skipped that calendar.

Work authorization is a separate gate from admission. Immigration New Zealand's operational manual, Appendix 13 Green List, in the version dated August 18, 2025, does not list lawyer as a shortage occupation. A candidate can be admissible and still waiting on a visa, or visa-ready and still waiting on the Council. The brief should carry both clocks. Where the company needs New Zealand-law advice before either clock finishes, the usual bridge is interim counsel who already holds a certificate, not a waiver invented at offer stage.

Two hiring patterns follow. A New York or English-qualified lawyer joining as general counsel of a New Zealand subsidiary, and expected to sign New Zealand opinions, is on the Council's timeline unless they are also Australian-admitted. A foreign-qualified lawyer hired to advise only on the law of their home jurisdiction, inside a team that already has New Zealand certificate holders, is a different brief and should be written that way. We do not collapse those two seats into one requisition. The in-house counsel search starts by writing which law the person must be allowed to practice on day one.

04 Compensation

Price the seat in New Zealand dollars, then convert.

Tahatū Career Navigator's 2026 occupation page for lawyer is the public print a board can open. Pay is before tax. The most common range is NZ$85,000 to NZ$215,000. The page also prints a lower figure of NZ$63,000 and an upper figure of NZ$383,000. Tahatū says the figures are indicative, drawn from Statistics New Zealand census and Integrated Data Infrastructure data and from Inland Revenue, and that they are not a rate for pay negotiations or visa applications. Use them as the occupation envelope. Do not use them as an Auckland year-of-call table, because no city split is published there.

The other public in-house number is Crown Law. An Official Information Act release of July 19, 2024 states the average annual salary for Crown Counsel in the year ended June 30, 2024 as NZ$152,549. That is a government legal-team average, not a private general counsel package, and it is two years behind the 2026 hiring season. It is a named average on the public record, and it sits inside Tahatū's most common band rather than at the upper print.

Convert after the New Zealand dollar figure is set. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand's July 2026 monthly-average NZD/USD was 0.57716. At that rate the Tahatū common band is about US$49,000 to US$124,000, and the Crown Counsel average is about US$88,000. Say the rate and the month in the offer paper. A blended rate, or a Sydney scale translated at the spot on the day someone built the spreadsheet, is how Trans-Tasman offers miss. The worked ledger, including what not to import from Australia, is lawyer salary in New Zealand, 2026. The Australian table it warns against is lawyer salary in Sydney, 2026.

Our own fee is not a placement percentage taken from the candidate. Company searches are retained only. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid as a retainer when the search is engaged, and it is kept if the client cancels. General counsel, chief legal officer, and chief compliance officer searches carry a 12-month replacement guarantee. Those terms are the same in Auckland as in any other market we run. What changes is the compensation base they attach to, which is the New Zealand package, not a US or Australian proxy.

05 Searches we run

Company mandates first, law-firm mandates on the same map.

Company mandates come first. Law-firm lateral work is part of the same certificate market, and it is named as such.

The company path splits by what the seat is. A board that has never had a lawyer on staff starts at first general counsel search, not at a job description copied from a listed-company general counsel. A sitting legal team hiring its leader, or a deputy, starts at general counsel and in-house counsel search. A conduct or financial-markets reporting line starts at chief compliance officer search. Legal operations, when the department needs intake and matter management rather than another adviser, is legal operations recruiting.

Law firms hire from the same roll. Lateral partner recruiting tests whether a book survives the move and whether conflicts close. Associate recruiting tests practice depth against the New Zealand pay ledger, not against a foreign class-year scale. Practice pages for the work that shows up most often in these briefs are corporate, finance and banking, litigation, and employment. The method behind the map is the research method.

On the firm-wide general counsel and chief legal officer book, the shortlist takes 24 days and the median time from brief to accepted offer is 11 weeks, across 38 searches since 2017. Offer acceptance on in-house placements is 96 percent. The New Zealand in-house files do not get to borrow those medians as if they were a local study. They are 5 searches since 2019, and the shortlist on those files took 26 days. One case is specific enough to brief against. An NZX-listed insurer in Auckland hired its first general counsel in 14 weeks in 2025. That sits inside the firm-wide general counsel range of 8 to 16 weeks. It is one file, not a New Zealand median.

The general counsel of that insurer told us, The shortlist was people who already held a New Zealand practicing certificate. We did not spend the search converting a Sydney package. The partner files are the other 2 of the 7. They are not part of the 400+ placements (230+ in-house). A company that wants the search described before anyone is called can brief it directly or send the mandate.

06 How a New Zealand search runs

Map the certificate roll, then qualify it by hand.

The first week is the brief. Which law must this person be allowed to practice. Which city will they actually sit in. Whether the package is a New Zealand dollar number or a number someone converted from Sydney or New York. Whether an Australian admission is available, or whether the Council of Legal Education calendar now governs the start date. Those questions decide the slate. They are not onboarding details.

The map is the practicing profession, not a list of people who have uploaded a résumé. National coverage of 18,018 lawyers is the market. The people we will actually approach are a shortlist inside it, qualified for the seat. Confidential approaches go to lawyers who are not looking. Names do not move to the client until both sides agree. Conflicts are checked before the call, not after the interview. That is the same discipline as a search in any other market. The local facts are the certificate, the branch geography, the admission clock, and the New Zealand dollar pay ledger above.

Lawyers who want a confidential read on their own position, rather than a company briefing, start at candidate information. Companies that already know the seat start at the conversation.

Legal recruiters in New Zealand — common questions

What does a legal recruitment agency in New Zealand actually search?

A legal recruitment agency New Zealand companies instruct is hiring into a practicing profession of 18,018 lawyers as of June 30, 2026, on provisional figures the New Zealand Law Society published on July 2, 2026. Of those, 15,868 were barristers and solicitors, 2,150 were barristers, and 1,477 were practicing overseas. Sartori & Partners has run 7 New Zealand searches since 2019: 5 in-house and 2 lateral partner. The in-house shortlist on those 5 files took 26 days. An NZX-listed insurer in Auckland hired its first general counsel in 14 weeks in 2025.

How big is the legal market in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch?

The 2025 Snapshot of the Profession, as of June 30, 2025, counted 17,504 practicing lawyers: 16,119 in New Zealand and 1,385 overseas. The Auckland branch had 7,520, the Wellington branch 3,287, and the Canterbury Westland branch, which includes Christchurch, 1,888. Those three branches held 12,695 of the 16,119 New Zealand-based lawyers. City pages for Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch are not published yet; the country hub is the map, and Australia is the neighboring region hub.

Can a foreign lawyer practice in New Zealand without a local admission?

Not as a New Zealand lawyer. Admission under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006 is as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court, and practice then requires a current New Zealand Law Society practicing certificate. An Australian lawyer with a current Australian practicing certificate uses the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997: High Court admission on form LA4, then a certificate for the equivalent occupation. The Law Society states the filing cost at NZ$229 (NZ$162 plus NZ$67). Every other overseas lawyer is assessed by the New Zealand Council of Legal Education and may have to sit the New Zealand Law and Practice Examination. The 2026 sitting is November 24 and 25, and the New Zealand-venue application cutoff is October 23, 2026, at NZ$917.70 including GST per part.

What should a company budget for lawyer pay in New Zealand in 2026?

Tahatū Career Navigator's 2026 occupation page for lawyer puts the most common pay between NZ$85,000 and NZ$215,000, before tax, with a lower print of NZ$63,000 and an upper print of NZ$383,000. That is an occupation envelope, not an Auckland table. Crown Counsel averaged NZ$152,549 in the year ended June 30, 2024, on Crown Law's OIA release of July 19, 2024. At the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's July 2026 monthly-average NZD/USD of 0.57716, the common band is about US$49,000 to US$124,000 and the Crown Counsel average is about US$88,000. The full ledger is lawyer salary in New Zealand for 2026. Do not import Sydney lawyer pay.

How long does a general counsel search in New Zealand take?

Across Sartori & Partners' general counsel and chief legal officer book since 2017, the shortlist is 24 days and the median time to an accepted offer is 11 weeks, on 52 searches. The New Zealand in-house files are a smaller set: 5 searches since 2019, shortlist in 26 days. One of them, a first general counsel for an NZX-listed insurer in Auckland, reached an accepted offer in 14 weeks in 2025. Acceptance on the firm-wide in-house book is 96 percent. The fee is retained only, 25–30 percent of first-year total compensation, with 30 percent of the fee paid as a retainer. General counsel, chief legal officer, and chief compliance officer searches carry a 12-month replacement guarantee.

Do you recruit only in Auckland?

No. Auckland is the largest branch, not the limit of a search. Wellington is the government and regulatory bar. Christchurch is inside Canterbury Westland. The 2025 snapshot ranks the Waikato Bay of Plenty branch next, ahead of lawyers based overseas. A company hiring in Hamilton or Dunedin still starts from the national certificate register. Lawyers weighing a move can read the candidate routes; companies brief the search at a confidential conversation.

New Zealand

A New Zealand legal hire begins with the seat, the city, and the admission clock.

Tell us the mandate. We will tell you whether the shortlist is already on the New Zealand roll or whether admission sits on the critical path. Retained search, complete discretion.
