Healthcare lateral partner recruiter

For the managing partner or healthcare chair underwriting one lateral. Who hires, what the published data does and does not say about the book, how a guarantee should be sized, and which covenants can hold the start date.

Brief a healthcare partner search Firm-wide lateral method
01 The brief

Healthcare is a different underwriting from a general lateral.

A healthcare lateral partner recruiter works for the firm that will pay the draw: the managing partner, the chair, or the head of healthcare. The question is whether a specific set of institutional relationships will be at the new firm when the guarantee period ends.

The firm-wide method is written once. Brief, portability, the Lateral Partner Questionnaire, conflicts and integration are on lateral partner recruiting. Repeating those five phases here would not change a healthcare decision. What changes the decision is the practice: clients that are institutions with their own general counsel, opposed sides of the table, a split between recurring regulatory advice and episodic deals or investigations, and a book figure that nobody has published.

That last point is stated plainly. The published partner book of business by practice table, drawn from 2,600+ partner conversations, has no healthcare row. This page does not fill the gap with an estimate. Market facts from Pirical, Above the Law, the FDA and EY are labeled with the year in the same sentence.

The 2026 hiring read closest to this practice is the life-sciences law hiring note for 2026, and the cross-practice view is legal hiring in 2026. The bench we recruit from is mapped at healthcare.

02 Who hires

Five buyers. One of them is your brief.

Healthcare laterals are opened by the shape of the firm, not by a generic partner requisition. Name the buyer before you name the partner.

  1. i.

Full-service firms building a regulatory bench

Healthcare is the practice that keeps a hospital-system, payor or provider-group client on the corporate side. The chair hires when the firm wins deals and loses the regulatory work that follows them, or when a conflict bars the sitting group. The hire is priced on the client it protects, not only on the healthcare originations it reports.

  2. ii.

    Healthcare boutiques and single-sector firms

The practice is the firm. The hire is a state or metro the platform does not cover, a transactional partner on a regulatory-heavy bench, or a payor-side partner on a provider-side platform. Treat a solo lateral and a lift-out of a regulatory team as different underwritings.

  3. iii.

    Life-sciences and deal-heavy platforms

Healthcare services, digital health and medical devices sit beside pharma and biotech. Life-sciences M&A reached roughly $240 billion in 2025, up 81% on the prior year (EY, via R&D World). A platform that is winning that deal flow hires the regulatory and reimbursement partner the deal team keeps borrowing.

  4. iv.

    Regional and mid-market firms

The usual brief is succession: a retiring partner whose book is a local hospital system, a physician group or a health plan. The work is relationship-based and often tied to one general counsel. Notice, client letters and who inherits the regulatory file matter more than a floor copied from a deal practice.

  5. v.

    Government-facing and investigations groups

Enforcement, False Claims Act and payor-audit defense hire from former-government benches and clear a different conflicts profile. A provider-side defense book does not travel onto a platform that represents the payors. Say which side of the docket the seat is before any name is approached.

Partner moves by city, all practices, are counted on lateral partner hiring statistics for 2026. Pirical’s Q1 2026 Am Law 200 partner-title count, published 1 May 2026, put litigation at 388 joins, corporate at 217, and banking and finance at 136. Healthcare was not in that published top three. Do not staff a healthcare chair off the litigation column.

03 The book

There is no published healthcare median. Underwrite the file, not the label.

A practice head who copies the corporate number will guarantee the wrong partner. The figures below are the ones that are published, and each says what it does not cover.

Corporate and M&A is the cross-practice anchor in the Sartori corpus: n=76, median about $2.15 million. Currencies are not cross-converted, and small cells are not shown on the source page. Full table: partner book of business by practice. The 84 percent retention figure is a three-year look at Am Law 101–200 hires made from January 2020 through December 2022 (Pirical, 30 April 2026). The 30–38 percent leave rate is a five-year, all-practice figure (Above the Law, 6 May 2026, citing Decipher). They are not two readings of one cohort.

Above the Law’s 6 May 2026 account of Decipher Investigative Intelligence adds two operational points. Firms report struggling to transfer the book from an incoming lateral, and a failed lateral can cost 200 to 400 percent of the lawyer’s annual compensation once recruiter fees, guarantees and replacement are counted. Neither point is healthcare-specific. They are the failure math a healthcare guarantee still has to survive.

ABA Law Practice Magazine, July–August 2025, reports that some firms require a lateral to show a $12 million book before they will open a conversation. Applied to healthcare, a screen that high is a decision to hire from a narrow group of originators. If the strategy is a healthcare chair, the screen has to be rewritten.

04 Portability

Four cuts before any number is allowed into a guarantee.

Healthcare portability is a client-by-client question. The institution that pays the bill is rarely the person who hired the partner.

01

Originated versus worked

Separate revenue the partner originated from billings they worked on a health-system relationship the firm already owned. Only the originated share is a base for a guarantee. Regulatory files are easy to inflate here: the partner who signs the advice may be servicing a relationship that sits with the corporate partner.

02

Recurring versus episodic

Compliance programs, reimbursement advice and an annual regulatory retainer recur. A transaction, a government investigation or a single large dispute ends. One practice label covers both, and they do not carry the same guarantee.

03

Which side of the table

Provider, payor, manufacturer and investor are different clients with opposed interests. A provider-side book does not travel to a firm whose largest client is a health plan. The conflicts pass runs on side before it runs on name.

04

Team dependency

A healthcare partner who cannot practice without a regulatory counsel and a reimbursement specialist is a lift-out. Price the group, or do not price the partner as if the book moves alone. The group method is on team lift-out recruiting.

The published portability shares by practice are on the book-of-business page; healthcare is not a published row there, so the read is made on the candidate’s own five largest files. The firm-wide lateral page carries the cross-practice client-stay finding. Do not paste it onto a health-system panel without reading those files.

05 The guarantee

Size the floor to the recurring slice. Then say what the firm is buying if that slice is small.

A guarantee is a promise to pay if collections miss. Without a published healthcare benchmark, the composition of the candidate’s own collections carries the whole decision.

  1. i.

What can sit under the floor

Originated, recurring advice that survives a rate-card test. That is the defensible base. Worked-not-originated revenue is the old firm’s client. Episodic revenue ends. Putting either of the last two under a multi-year floor is how healthcare guarantees miss.

  2. ii.

What the firm may be buying instead

A full-service firm sometimes needs the healthcare name so transactional pitches stop failing. That is a strategic-gap hire, which the July–August 2025 ABA Law Practice article distinguishes from an opportunistic revenue hire. Pay for the gap in the offer narrative. Do not pretend it is healthcare originations that will reach the drawer in year one.

  3. iii.

Retention of the partner is a different series

Pirical’s 30 April 2026 ranking put Am Law 101–200 three-year lateral retention at 84 percent on average for 2020–2022 hires, and did not publish a healthcare figure. It counts whether the person was still at the firm, not whether the originations arrived. Decipher’s five-year leave rate of 30–38 percent, reported by Above the Law on 6 May 2026, is the longer clock.

  4. iv.

    How the search is paid

Healthcare partner mandates are retained. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire’s total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid as a retainer at engagement. Contingent search does not fund the client-by-client read this practice requires. Terms are in the letter before anyone is called.

A group move is priced only after that read. If a regulatory counsel and a reimbursement specialist carry the work, the partner’s reported book is the group’s book. Either the offer includes the people the work needs, or the floor is cut to what the partner can staff alone. That choice is made before the compensation committee sees a number.

06 Covenants

Four screens that decide whether the practice can start.

Side, book, client and deed. In that order. A partner who clears the economics and fails the deed is not a hire with a delayed start.

  1. I
    Screen 01 — Side and sub-sector

Provider, payor, life sciences or digital health. Pick one before you map.

Healthcare is not one market. Provider transactions, payor regulation, pharma and device work, and health technology hire different partners and clear different conflicts. A résumé that says “healthcare” without the side and the sub-sector is not a brief.

    • State the side in the first conversation. A provider-side book and a payor-side book do not travel onto each other’s platforms.
    • Regulatory and transactional skills are often held by different partners. Say whether the seat needs both.
    • Say whether the seat includes life sciences. The hybrid regulatory-plus-transactional profile is the scarce one, described in the 2026 life-sciences hiring note.
  2. II
Screen 02 — Composition of the book

Do not borrow the corporate number. No healthcare figure is published.

In the published corpus of 2,600+ partner conversations, corporate and M&A partners (n=76) report a median near $2.15 million. The published table does not include a healthcare row, and we do not estimate one here. A floor copied from the corporate anchor, or from a $12 million screen, will misjudge a healthcare partner in either direction.

    • Ask for three to five years of originations, collections, realization, hours and rates. That economic section is the Lateral Partner Questionnaire, described on the firm-wide page.
    • Split the number into recurring advice, worked-not-originated and episodic matters before anyone discusses a floor.
    • Some firms screen at a $12 million book before they will talk to a lateral (ABA Law Practice Magazine, July–August 2025). That is a large-firm corporate screen, not a healthcare one.
  3. III
Screen 03 — Who the client will follow

The client is an institution with a general counsel and a panel.

Healthcare revenue often sits with a hospital system, a health plan or a physician group whose general counsel reviews outside counsel. The institution can move the file without moving the relationship the partner thinks they own. Across practices, 30–38% of laterals leave within five years (Above the Law, 6 May 2026, citing Decipher), and the same account says firms struggle to transfer the incoming book.

    • Test each of the five largest clients: loyal to the lawyer, to the platform’s coverage, or to a fee the new firm will not match.
    • A government investigation or a transaction staffed by the old firm’s bench is low portability even when the partner ran the strategy.
    • Cross-sold corporate work that never appears on the healthcare partner’s origination report will not show in the guarantee, and it may be the reason the firm is hiring.
  4. IV
Screen 04 — Covenants and the start date

A US non-compete usually fails. The notice clause often does not.

ABA Model Rule 5.6(a) provides that a lawyer shall not participate in offering or making a partnership, shareholders, operating, employment or similar agreement that restricts the right to practice after the relationship ends, except an agreement concerning benefits upon retirement. What delays a healthcare start date is usually notice, client communication and a forfeiture clause dressed up as a retirement benefit.

    • ABA Formal Opinion 06-444 (13 September 2006) reads the retirement exception narrowly: the benefits must be available only to a lawyer who is actually retiring, and the clause cannot forfeit income already earned.
    • Open regulatory matters, pending transactions and government inquiries cannot pause for a lateral’s notice. Sequence the client letter and the start date around them.
    • A London or Gulf partnership deed is a different regime from Rule 5.6. Read the deed. Do not import a New York conclusion into it.

What still binds, even where a non-compete does not: a notice period that is a duty to transition rather than a ban on practice afterward; the client’s right to choose counsel; and a staff non-solicit, which is a different clause from a ban on practice and has to be read under the governing state’s law. During a US notice period the partner is still at the old firm, so client contact is a fiduciary question, not a recruiting one. Sources: ABA Model Rule 5.6, Formal Opinion 06-444.

07 2026 demand

Deal flow and approvals are not the same fact as a partner requisition.

Life-sciences work grew in 2025. Partner-title joins in the first quarter of 2026 were dominated by other practices. A chair who conflates the two will open a search the market is not filling, or refuse one the work justifies.

The FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research approved 46 novel drugs in 2025. Life-sciences M&A reached roughly $240 billion in 2025, an 81 percent rise on the prior year, according to EY’s M&A Firepower report as reported by R&D World. Both figures describe the life-sciences end of a healthcare practice, not hospital, payor or provider work.

The partner-move census is a different column. Pirical, 1 May 2026, counted Am Law 200 partner joins for 1 January through 31 March 2026 and published litigation (388), corporate (217) and banking and finance (136) as the top three practice labels. Healthcare was not among them. Use the 2026 lateral statistics note before comparing that quarter with a full-year, all-title series.

The matching market read is is life sciences law hiring in 2026. If the gap is a missing regulatory-plus-transactional name where deal teams keep asking for one, the demand data supports opening the search. If the gap is “the market is busy, hire someone,” the Q1 partner-title count does not.

08 How a healthcare mandate runs

Retained, blind, and sequenced around the deed.

The five underwriting phases are not rewritten here. Healthcare adds the screens above, then uses the same retained process.

01

Blind until you say otherwise

The firm’s name and the partner’s name stay down until both sides have a reason to proceed. A healthcare group is small enough that a leaked chair search is the search.

02

Evidence before the floor

Targeting uses the market map. The guarantee uses the LPQ economics and the four cuts on this page. Assertion is not a book.

03

Deed before the start date

Rule 5.6, the retirement-benefit exception and any overseas garden-leave clause are read before a start date is offered to the partnership.

04

Integration is the year that counts

Panel appointments are either renewed in the new firm’s name in the first year or quietly left behind. We stay through that renewal cycle.

Fee 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Retainer 30 percent of the fee at engagement. Partners weighing a move of their own, rather than hiring one, should use the partner advisory.

What healthcare chairs ask before they commit

What is a healthcare partner’s book supposed to be?

Do not underwrite to a number that has not been published. Sartori’s published interview corpus of 2,600+ partner conversations gives $2.15 million for corporate and M&A (n=76) and has no healthcare row. We do not invent one. The floor is built from the candidate’s own three-to-five years of originations, collections and realization, tested client by client.

Our screen is a large corporate number. Healthcare partners do not clear it.

Rewrite the screen for the practice. Some firms screen at a $12 million book (ABA Law Practice Magazine, July–August 2025). If the strategy is a healthcare chair, the screen has to be rewritten. If the strategy is an eight-figure originator who happens to have healthcare clients, say that, and run it as a corporate lateral.

How much of the book moves when the client is a health system?

Institution versus lawyer, read file by file. A health system’s general counsel can re-panel outside counsel without moving the relationship. We read the five largest clients for loyalty to the lawyer, the platform or the fee. Across practices, 30–38 percent of laterals leave within five years (Decipher, via Above the Law, 6 May 2026).

What guarantee is defensible?

The floor tracks evidenced, recurring collections. We do not publish a practice-wide guarantee percentage. The floor is the originated, recurring slice, tested for rate-card fit, for a defined ramp. A failed lateral can cost 200–400 percent of annual compensation once fees, guarantees and replacement are counted (Above the Law, 6 May 2026). Retention of the person is not retention of the originations.

The partnership deed has a non-compete.

Read Rule 5.6 before you pick a start date. In most US jurisdictions a post-departure ban on practice is barred by Model Rule 5.6(a), with a narrow retirement-benefit exception (ABA Formal Opinion 06-444). Notice, client notice and a real retirement forfeiture are different instruments. The cross-practice covenant sequence sits on lateral partner recruiting.

We need a payor-side partner, not another provider-side partner.

The side of the table is the brief. Provider, payor, manufacturer and investor work are not the same practice with a different header. We map the side separately and say so before outreach. Mixing them produces a shortlist that cannot do the work the chair described.

Will the corporate client follow, or only the healthcare file?

Credit the relationship the firm is actually buying. On a full-service platform the healthcare partner is often hired so a corporate client stays. That value does not appear as healthcare originations. We write it into the brief as a cross-sell condition and do not let it inflate the guarantee.

We are replacing our healthcare chair. The market cannot know.

Blind until you release the name. Succession in a healthcare group leaks fast, because the client base is small and well known. The mandate stays confidential. Your firm’s name is disclosed only to screened candidates, under your control. Partners considering their own move use the partner advisory, which is a different conversation.

A brief, not a commitment

A healthcare lateral is a book problem with a deed attached.

Brief the side of the table, the sub-sector and the gap. We map the healthcare field, read the candidate's own collections client by client, and clear the covenant before a start date is put in front of the partnership. Retained.
