Market · In-house art law and private client

The uncovered art-law seat in Milan is a buy, not a hire.

A general counsel, family-office principal or head of legal deciding whether to put collection counsel on the payroll needs four answers: who is hiring the seat, what it actually does, what the profession pays, and why the requisition stays open.

Four questions wear one job title.

A general counsel at a Milan family holding or luxury group who types art lawyer into a requisition is asking who buys the collection file, what the seat does, what it pays, and why it stays open. Sartori maps about 5,000 lawyers in Milan. Coverage is not the constraint. Legge 247/2012 is: a private-sector employer cannot put Avvocato on the payroll and keep the person on the ordinary albo. That is the buyer's question, and it is the one this page answers.

Lens 01 · Who is hiring The buyer is a holding, a bank desk or a corporate collection — not a vacancy board.

Family offices, private-bank family-advisory units, collector vehicles and luxury or banking groups that already carry works on the balance sheet are the employers. Directories list the studios those buyers instruct. They do not list the payroll seat. Shop the buyer type first.

The uncovered seat is a purchase decision. Who actually buys it is laid out below.

02 Who is hiring

The capital that buys the seat sits in Milan. The payroll title does not.

Family offices, private banks and corporate collections already hold the works. What they do not hold is an employed export-license advocate — and the census of vehicles is not a census of seats.

Politecnico di Milano’s Osservatorio Family Office, as extracted by We Wealth in December 2025, split that June 2025 stock into 126 single-family offices, 96 multi-family offices and 22 bank-origin vehicles, up 10.4 percent versus 2024, with 53 percent of holdings still in Italy. That split is the closest official map of the vehicles a Milan general counsel is hiring against. It is not a count of in-house collection counsel.

The cash next to those vehicles is dated on a different series. AIPB Centro Studi, covering 99 percent of members’ assets, recorded the end-2025 private-banking stock already on the grid as EUR 160 billion larger than 2024, of which net inflows were EUR 58 billion, market effect EUR 61 billion and perimeter changes EUR 40 billion, in its 30 March 2026 release. The same series had already moved from EUR 1,037 billion at end-2021 to EUR 1,257 billion at end-2024. End-2024 private-banking share of Italian household financial wealth was 34 percent; share of household investments, 48 percent. That is the pool that funds art-advisory conversations. It is still not a legal-desk budget.

The tenth Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report, covering 2025 and published in 2026 by Arts Economics, put global sales at USD 59.6 billion, up 4 percent, with the United States at USD 26 billion (44 percent) and the EU at USD 8.4 billion, up 3 percent. Italy slowed 2 percent on that read. Regulatory hours in Milan do not wait on the hammer.

Across 250 structured interviews with Milan general counsel, chief legal officers, heads of legal and family-office principals, 61 of the 88 respondents who sat inside a family holding, private-bank advisory unit, collector vehicle or corporate-collection parent and had touched an art, collection or cultural-heritage file over a 24-month window kept every export and mobility matter on outside counsel for the entire window. The same cohort is the only interview book on this page. The companies were not short of works. They were short of a lawful payroll title that could take those works to the Ufficio Esportazione.

Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, read on the 2025–2026 Milan in-house waves, recorded 29 of 40 legal-budget worksheets booking every collection and export file to the panel. The employed legal function already existed. The art file had not moved inside it.

01

Family offices and family holdings

Single- and multi-family vehicles that have already internalized allocation. They buy vincolo opinions, SUE filings and succession architecture from studios, and they hire a head of legal only when the holding itself needs an employed counsel.

02

Private-bank family-advisory units

The capital sits here. Collection-management tools are common; a complete art-advisory service is not. The legal work still leaves the bank as a studio brief, not as an in-house art-law grade.

03

Corporate-collection parents

Luxury, banking and industrial groups that put works on the balance sheet. The general counsel or chief legal officer already owns the desk. Export, image rights and loan contracts are the overlay, not a second department.

04

Galleries, auction houses, foundations

Galleries hire a compliance giurista for the EUR 10,000 AML threshold. Museums hire a generalist legal employee. Neither posting is the export-license advocate a collector thinks they are hiring.

Share of Italian private-banking operators that offer collection tools, against the share that offer a complete art-advisory service. Offer is not utilization.

AIPB Yearbook as reported by Luxury & Finance, 3 March 2026, and the AIPB clipping of 4 March 2026 (75% collection-management; 63% valuation; 56% buy/sell; 19% full art advisory; 18% of clients have used valorization).

Self-reported collection and ticket sizes in Intesa Sanpaolo's 303-collector sample. This is a fair-linked survey, not a national collector census.

Intesa Sanpaolo / Allemandi, Collezionisti e valore dell'arte in Italia 2026, released 15 April 2026, as reported by Artribune (55% of collections between EUR 100,000 and EUR 1 million; 18% above EUR 1 million; 30% have paid more than EUR 500,000 once).

AIPB’s own client survey, reported on 3 March 2026 at Gallerie d’Italia in Milan, found that one fifth of Italian private families already invest in art and that almost one quarter intend to increase exposure. Utilization lags the product shelf: 18 percent of clients have used valorization services, while 30 percent expect support on artistic assets. Multi-family offices, in the Politecnico census, internalize asset allocation and wealth planning and externalize technical-legal services. The family officer and the private banker show up on the IPSOA art-law master’s destinee list as clients of the legal module, not as substitute counsel. AIFO attests family officers under Legge 4/2013. That attestation is not an albo.

Intesa Sanpaolo’s Collezionisti e valore dell’arte in Italia 2026, released 15 April 2026 and built with Artissima on a sample of 303 Italian modern and contemporary collectors, put the median collection at 50 works and the mean at 99. Ticket sizes in that fair-linked sample are the demand texture a family-office head of legal is actually buying against — not a census of all Italian collectors, and not a legal-fee pool.

Corporate collections sit one reporting line higher. The IPSOA faculty map, stripped of names, puts a General Legal Affairs Director at a listed luxury-goods company as the in-house title a corporate collection actually reports into, next to a Head of Business & Family Advisory and an Art Advisory function at a systemically important Italian bank. A Milan IP boutique’s extraordinary-operations page lists the same buyers: families, foundations, museums, trusts, wealth-management firms and companies that put works on the corporate balance sheet. The general counsel already owns that desk. The question is whether the next hire is a coordinator or a fantasy export advocate.

A general counsel at a Milan-listed luxury group, speaking inside that 24-month window, told us the corporate collection reports into legal and every export file still goes to a studio, because the in-house counsel cannot appear and cannot keep the title. That is the buyer’s split in one sentence. A London private-client desk, or a Geneva wealth counterpart, shows up the same way: as a studio a Milan holding may instruct on the cross-border tax overlay, not as a second hiring census and not as a second closed-search book.

Chambers High Net Worth 2026 is useful for a different reason. It created the Italy Art and Cultural Property Law table in its first year and placed three Italian houses in Band 1 — a large full-service firm, a Milan mid-size full-service firm and a Milan specialist boutique known for export-license proceedings. A separate Private Wealth Law table ranks the tax, trust and succession houses that pick up collection mobility as an overlay. Leaders League’s Italy Best Law Firms for Art ranking, published 23 July 2026, mapped ten houses. Legal 500 Italy does not publish a dedicated art table. Those directories tell a chief legal officer which studios to panel. They do not tell a head of HR which employee to requisition.

The corporate collection reports into legal and every export file still goes to a studio, because the in-house counsel cannot appear and cannot keep the title.

03 What the seat does

Private-client work the general counsel still buys.

The 2025–2026 statutes rewrote the hours on export, import, VAT, loans and AML. They did not move those hours onto a company payroll.

Law 17 March 2026, n. 40, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale on 30 March 2026 and in force on 14 April 2026, is the circulation statute a Milan head of legal now has to brief. Article 5 amends art. 65 of the Cultural Heritage Code: for works by a no-longer-living author, more than seventy years old, definitive exit still needs an attestato di libera circolazione above EUR 50,000 and a vidimated self-declaration below it. The previous gate was EUR 13,500. Books stay at EUR 13,500. Archaeological finds, monument fragments, incunabula, manuscripts and archives stay authorization-only regardless of value. The SUE platform rolled the “DVAL 50_MILA” form on 4 May 2026. Mid-market DVAL volume can sit with a gallery or holding giurista. The senior cultural-property file — foreign-author refusals, withdrawals that still trigger tutela, books and archaeology, the ninety-day loan clock under art. 48(3) — stays at a studio.

Council of State, Sezione VI, n. 9962 of 21 November 2023, is why foreign institutions now treat an Italian export title as more reliable. Chambers’ Italy trends chapter, last updated 14 April 2026, reads the holding that way. An attestato is an authorization under Legge 241/1990 art. 21-nonies; autotutela after twelve months requires proof that the error is imputable to the private party’s fraud or grave fault. A general counsel buying a work with a pre-2018 title is buying an opinion on that window, not a new in-house grade.

Import is a second desk on the same Milan office. EU Regulation 2019/880 went live on the ICG / TRACES platform on 28 June 2025. DG ABAP, updated 29 July 2025, assigns the Milan Ufficio Esportazione the validation of operator registrations for Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Category B is a license (archaeological objects and monument elements over 250 years). Category C is an importer statement: works over 200 years and at or above EUR 18,000. The decision clock on a complete license file is 90 days. Holders need an EORI. AIDA and TRACES were not fully joined when the circulars landed, so 2026 still carries an onboarding backlog. The in-house seat owns the provenance pack. Customs counsel owns the filing.

VAT is a private-client election, not a courtroom file. Article 9 of decreto-legge 30 June 2025, n. 95, as restated by Agenzia delle Dogane on 4 July 2025 and by CNSD on 29 July 2025, applies a 5 percent rate to qualifying art, antiques and collectibles from 1 July 2025, provided the margin scheme is not used. Until 30 June 2025, artist and heir sales and imports were generally 10 percent and gallery domestic sales 22 percent. The margin scheme remains the alternative, not a cumulative cut. Withers, writing on 5 August 2025, is the implementation note a chief legal officer can hand to tax. No official cash-outturn for the second half of 2025 was found. This page does not invent one.

What the company can employWhat the company must still buy

  1. Employed coordinator A giurista d’impresa or head of legal who owns intake, insurance schedules, image-rights inventories, AML packs and the panel brief. No ordinary albo. No privilege.
  2. Retained export desk ALC, LED, DVAL, ICG, withdrawals, tutela and TAR or Council of State defense. The Ministry counterpart sits opposite this desk, not opposite HR.
  3. Retained private-client tax Five-percent versus margin elections, succession inventories, vincolo drop-out, dation, foundation paths. The family office already externalizes this work.

Law 134/2026 Reciprocity-based immunity from seizure for inbound loans to Italian museums and cultural institutions, once MiC issues the guarantee In force 12 August 2026; implementing decreto due 11 October 2026 Museum or foundation legal employee plus external cultural-property counsel — not a family-office hire
D.Lgs. 125/2019 (AML) Art intermediaries, galleries and auction houses inside the EUR 10,000 perimeter, including split or linked operations and free ports In force 10 November 2019; 2026 intensity is enforcement and AMLA-readiness, not a new Italian statute A compliance officer inside the gallery or auction house, plus external AML counsel on UIF or PEP files
D.Lgs. 346/1990 (succession) Worldwide tax if the deceased is Italian-resident; 10 percent ornament presumption unless inventoried; vincolo drop-out; dation in payment Standing overlay; volume follows deaths and lifetime gifts, not the 2026 circulation statutes Private-wealth tax counsel and a notary; cultural-property counsel only when a vincolo, export attempt or dation is live
Art bonus (D.L. 83/2014) 65 percent tax credit on cash gifts to public cultural goods and listed performing-arts bodies; private collections are out Permanent since Stabilita 2016; 2023 outlays just over EUR 121.5 million The company's tax manager and the general counsel's giving desk — not an in-house art-law seat

Two overlays sit on the same general counsel’s desk and still do not justify a dedicated cultural-property grade. D.Lgs. 4 October 2019, n. 125, in force 10 November 2019, pulled art intermediaries into the AML perimeter at or above EUR 10,000, even if the operation is split. That is a compliance officer inside a gallery or auction house. Art bonus, permanent since Legge 208/2015, is a 65 percent tax credit on cash gifts to public cultural goods; Minicifre 2024 put 2023 outlays just over EUR 121.5 million. Private collections are out. A Milan company that already donates can run that credit through tax. It cannot use the credit to staff a family collection.

Law 16 July 2026, n. 134, in force 12 August 2026, adds a reciprocity-based immunity-from-seizure guarantee for inbound museum loans once the Ministero della Cultura issues it. The implementing decreto was due 11 October 2026. That file belongs to a museum or foundation legal employee, not to a family-office head of legal. Cassazione n. 3231 of 9 February 2025 closed the standalone authenticity action; the December 2025 photograph-term change, from 20 to 70 years, is an IP-inventory problem for catalogues and fairs. Complementary desks. Not substitutes for the export brief.

04 What it pays

The profession publishes means. It does not publish this specialty.

A chief legal officer who asks what an employed collection-law seat costs in Milan will not find a labeled band. The honest evidence is adjacent, dated, and narrower than the question.

After the research set — Cassa Forense, TopLegal, AIGI’s public pages, ministry notices — no primary publisher gives a euro band labeled art-law counsel or private-client collection counsel in Milan. In-house pay guides issued by executive-search houses are outside this page’s source rule and are omitted. A figure that was not is not rounded.

What exists is the profession-wide self-employed series. Cassa Forense / Censis, in the 2026 Rapporto sull’Avvocatura presented at the Camera dei Deputati and built on 2024 IRPEF, put national mean income at EUR 51,912, Lombardy at EUR 87,475, and the Milan bar district at EUR 93,604 on 30,139 subscribers. The 2025 subscriber file counted 228,641 lawyers nationally; Lombardy held 33,755 active lawyers. Seniority means on the non-pensioner file run from EUR 14,571 at one to four years to EUR 102,202 at thirty-five to thirty-nine years. Those integers mix litigators, family lawyers and every other Cassa member. They are not an employed in-house RAL and not an art-law specialty. A head of HR who treats EUR 93,604 as a collection-counsel offer has misread the table.

The closest studio-collaborator series is older and still not this practice. TopLegal’s 2023 observatory on young lawyers, a sample of 177 professionals at Italian and international business-law firms in Milan and Rome, put first-year in-studio pay at EUR 40,142 and collaborators with more than seven years at EUR 86,377, as reported by Italia Economy on 20 July 2023. Corporate and finance demand, not cultural-property demand, is the engine that note names.

The one public employed legal figure in the set is a different job. A public cultural-services body advertised, on 9 September 2025, a permanent Responsabile dell’area di supporto alla Direzione e affari giuridici on the theatre CCNL at Quadro 1A, RAL EUR 50,000, start 1 January 2026. Functions: anti-corruption, transparency, privacy, procurement, HR legal. Mandatory law degree and abilitazione. Export licenses and collection structuring were not on the interview program. That is the museum-side generalist. It is useful as a floor for a public cultural employer. It is not a private-holding offer.

For the cash a Milan company actually puts on a general counsel or chief legal officer, the sibling Italian general-counsel compensation piece owns the managers’ contract, the compulsory variable and the funds above the base. This page does not copy those tables. The IPSOA master in art-market law and tax runs 46 hours across 11 sessions. It is a market credential for in-house counsel, family officers and corporate collection managers. It is not a license and not a pay scale.

Cassa Forense / Censis 2024 IRPEF means — profession-wide self-employed income, not an employed art-law RAL. The highlighted band is the national mean against the Milan bar-district mean.

05 Why it stays open

The statute holds the seat open. The first brief makes it worse.

A company that posts Avvocato on a private-sector collection seat has written a title the professional statute will not employ. That is why the search stays open after the shortlist exists.

Legge 31 December 2012, n. 247, article 18(d), makes the profession of avvocato incompatible with any private-sector employment, even part-time. Article 18(c) carves out administration of personal or family assets, so an unpaid board role at a family holding can remain compatible. A salaried operating job cannot. Articles 19 and 23 keep the title only for lawyers in a stably constituted legal office of a public entity, on the elenco speciale. Consiglio Nazionale Forense republishes those articles. Consequence for a Milan company, family office or collector vehicle: you cannot put “Avvocato” on the payroll and keep the person on the ordinary albo. You hire a giurista d’impresa, or you keep buying a studio.

In-house recognition is unfinished, and AIGI, seated in Milan, is the body that says so. Il Sole 24 Ore NT+ Diritto, on 11 September 2025, recorded AIGI’s ask for a special list annexed to the albo for employed counsel who hold the abilitazione, and for legal privilege on in-house advice. Askanews, on 30 April 2026, reported a Camera Justice Committee amendment restoring language that employees and continuous collaborators may give out-of-court legal advice in the exclusive interest of the employer. AIGI called that continuity, not privilege. A commentary dated 30 August 2026 records that implementing decrees under Legge 137/2026 must allow such employment contracts and that Akzo Nobel still denies EU-competition privilege to in-house counsel. Privilege and a private-sector special list remain open. A chief legal officer who hires against a hoped-for reform is hiring a 2027 statute into a 2026 file.

Of 22 payroll requisitions framed around collection or art-law work inside that Milan interview book over the same 24-month window, 14 were paused within ninety days once the general counsel or head of HR read article 18(d). Forty-four of the 88 collection-touching respondents sat inside a family office or family holding; 33 of those 44 said they internalize allocation and still buy every vincolo opinion and every SUE filing from outside. A head of legal at a multi-family office, speaking inside the same window, told us they internalized asset allocation two years ago and still buy every vincolo opinion from a studio. The Politecnico census already described that split. The interviews put a person in it.

Mandate telemetry is smaller because mandates are not interviews. Of 17 closed Milan in-house searches over three years, 4 were collection-adjacent seats at a family holding, a private-bank legal unit, a luxury-group legal desk or a collector vehicle. Three of those four closed only after the brief was rewritten from “art-law avvocato” to “giurista d’impresa plus a retained studio.” One of the four ran the full seven months because the first ten weeks were spent on a studio-title spec the buyer later withdrew. That is a slow segment on our own book, and it is ours: we accepted the first brief.

Processes, not closed searches, make the conversion worse. Sartori opened 9 collection-adjacent processes in Milan over three years; five never reached an offer because the buyer would not accept a giurista title without the albo. Approaches to studio cultural-property counsel about an employed move — 36 confidential approaches over 24 months, 5 first meetings — show the other side of the same gate. Counsel who already hold export files will not give up the title to sit on a holding payroll. The Milan in-house line still records a 26 percent counter-offer incidence and a median 16 working days from offer to signature once a candidate is in play. The months that vanish are the ones before anyone will take the call on the title as first written.

Why the requisition opensWhy it does not close

  1. The buyer writes a studio title Avvocato, export-license counsel on a private-sector contract. The professional statute will not employ that combination.
  2. The file cannot move ALC, LED, TAR and cross-border tax stay at a studio even after a giurista starts. The company still needs the panel it thought the hire would replace.
  3. The incumbent will not trade the albo Studio counsel who already run Ministry files do not surrender the title for a holding business card. Privilege is still open. The employed seat looks weaker than the one they have.
We accepted the first brief.
On conversion
06 How to buy the seat

Write the hybrid before you open the search.

A general counsel who has named the employed seat and the retained desks can fill a coordinator. A requisition that still says one word will not.

We have worked the Milan in-house market for 8 years, for family holdings, private-bank legal units and corporate collections. Over the trailing three years we closed 17 in-house searches with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months. Collection-adjacent files in that book ran to the long end when the title was wrong and to the middle of the band when the hybrid was decided before the first approach.

Two engagements show the split. A family holding whose principal wanted “an art-law avvocato on staff” spent the first six weeks on a title the statute would not employ; the brief was rewritten to a head of legal who would own the panel, and the search closed in the fifth month with the export desk retained. A Milan-listed luxury group already had a general counsel; the open seat was a counsel who could run SUE packs and image-rights inventories under that reporting line. It closed in the sixth month as a giurista d’impresa. A third file, a collector vehicle that required the albo on the business card, is one of the five processes that never reached an offer. No company, studio or candidate is named here because these are composites built from the same mandate book.

Three titles a Milan company can actually write, and the work each title can and cannot take. This is a statutory map, not a ranking of employers.
Title the buyer can write Who writes it What it can take What it cannot take
Giurista d'impresa / legal counsel Family holding, collector SPV, private-bank legal unit, corporate-collection parent Coordinate SUE packs, insurance, image-rights inventories, AML files, panel management Keep the ordinary albo, appear in court, hold legal privilege, sign as avvocato
Studio art-and-cultural-property counsel The same buyers, as a retained desk ALC / LED / DVAL filings, TAR and Council of State, export-risk clauses, Ministry interface Sit on the company's payroll under Legge 247/2012 and remain avvocato
Responsabile affari giuridici (cultural entity) Museums, foundations, public cultural-service bodies Privacy, 231, procurement, HR legal, immunity-from-seizure applications with MiC Replace the export-license boutique on a collector's private sale

Hire a giurista or head of legal when collection volume is continuous and someone inside the company must own the panel brief.

  • Write the title the statute allows. Legal counsel, giurista d’impresa, head of legal. Not avvocato.
  • Put the seat under the general counsel at a corporate-collection parent, or under the principal at a family holding.
  • Count last year’s files. If SUE packs, loan contracts and insurance schedules already repeat, the coordinator pays for itself.
  • Budget four to seven months on the Milan in-house line, and do not start the clock until the hybrid is written down.
  • Keep privilege out of the offer memo. AIGI is still campaigning for it. Akzo Nobel still denies it on EU competition.

Keep export, litigation and cross-border tax at a studio. Directories already tell you which desks to panel.

  • Panel an Art and Cultural Property desk for ALC, LED, DVAL, ICG and Ministry interface.
  • Panel a Private Wealth desk for succession, donations, trusts and the 5 percent versus margin election.
  • Do not treat Band 1 as a headcount. Three houses in a first-year table are a buying list, not an employee inventory.
  • Leave courtroom work off the payroll spec. A giurista who starts on Monday still cannot appear on Tuesday.
  • Use the Milan Ufficio Esportazione catchment as a geography filter for import onboarding, not as a reason to hire a public officer.
Questions a general counsel or head of HR should put on the requisition before a search firm is instructed. Weighting follows the statute and the buyer type, not a vacancy count.
Factor What to interrogate Weighs most for
Hybrid already decided Have you named the employed seat and the retained export and private-client desks, or is the requisition still one word? Every buyer
Title the statute allows Does the posting say giurista d'impresa, legal counsel or head of legal — and not avvocato? Payroll seats
File that cannot move Which live ALC, LED, ICG or TAR matter must stay at a studio even after the hire starts? Family holdings and collector vehicles
Reporting line Does the corporate collection report to the general counsel, and does the family-office legal seat report to the principal? Corporate and FO buyers

Fallback the board accepts If the hybrid hire is not available, will you thicken the panel or promote an existing in-house counsel? Before the search opens

Common questions about hiring collection counsel in Milan

Should a Milan company hire an art lawyer in-house or keep buying the work from a studio?

Keep the export, litigation and cross-border tax files at a studio; hire a giurista d’impresa only when collection volume is continuous. Legge 247/2012 art. 18(d) makes the title avvocato incompatible with private-sector employment, so a payroll hire loses the ordinary albo and does not gain privilege. Across 250 structured interviews with Milan general counsel and heads of legal, 61 of the 88 respondents who had touched a collection file in a 24-month window kept every export and mobility matter on outside counsel. A family office that wants a courtroom export-license advocate is shopping a studio seat, not a job posting.

Which Milan companies, family offices or collector vehicles actually need this seat?

Four buyer types, and none of them publishes a dedicated art-law vacancy series. Politecnico di Milano counted about 244 Italian family offices on 1 June 2025; multi-family offices internalize allocation and externalize technical-legal work. AIPB put private-banking assets at EUR 1,417 billion at end-2025, and its Yearbook recorded a full art-advisory service at only 19 percent of operators. Corporate collections sit under the parent general counsel at luxury, banking and industrial groups. Museums and foundations hire a generalist responsabile affari giuridici — a public cultural body posted that seat at EUR 50,000 in September 2025 — and still buy export files from studios.

What does an in-house collection-law seat in Milan actually do?

It owns the continuous files a studio should not live inside: vendor intake, insurance schedules, image-rights inventories, AML packs at galleries, and the brief that goes to export counsel. It does not sign an attestato di libera circolazione or appear at the TAR. Law 40/2026, in force 14 April 2026, moved the permanent-export value gate from EUR 13,500 to EUR 50,000 and put a ninety-day clock on exhibition-loan authorizations. EU Regulation 2019/880 has run import licenses and importer statements through the ICG system since 28 June 2025, with Milan competent for Lombardy operator registrations. Those are studio or customs-counsel hours. The employed seat coordinates them.

What does this seat pay a Milan employer in 2026?

No primary publisher prints a euro band labeled art-law counsel, and this page does not invent one. Cassa Forense / Censis, in the 2026 Rapporto sull’Avvocatura, put 2024 mean IRPEF income at EUR 93,604 in the Milan bar district and EUR 51,912 nationally — self-employed income for the whole profession, not an employed in-house RAL and not an art-law specialty. TopLegal’s 2023 Milan-and-Rome business-law sample (177 lawyers) put first-year studio pay at EUR 40,142 and collaborators with more than seven years at EUR 86,377. A public cultural-entity legal head was posted at EUR 50,000 in September 2025. Read those as floors and profession-wide means. For general-counsel cash in Italy, use the sibling compensation piece, not this page.

Why do these Milan searches stay open for months?

Because the first brief asks for an avvocato the company cannot employ. Of 22 payroll requisitions framed around collection or art-law work inside Sartori’s Milan interview book over 24 months, 14 were paused within ninety days once the general counsel or head of HR read Legge 247/2012. Of nine collection-adjacent processes Sartori opened in Milan over three years, five never reached an offer because the buyer would not accept a giurista title. The files that must stay at a studio — export licenses, TAR defense, cross-border tax — cannot move in-house even after a hire.

How long does a Milan in-house collection-law search take?

Budget the long end of Sartori’s Milan in-house window: four to seven months, and the one collection-adjacent file that closed on the original “art-law avvocato” spec ran the full seven. Offer to signature on the Milan in-house line is a median 16 working days once a candidate is in play. The months that vanish are the ones spent rewriting the title. A company that has not decided the hybrid — employed generalist plus retained export and private-client desks — has not finished the brief.
