Silver Circle Law Firms 2026: The List, NQ Pay and How They Compare to the Magic Circle
On 1 July 2026 a London newly qualified solicitor at Macfarlanes moved onto a £150,000 base — the same published number the Magic Circle has held since May 2024. This is the 2026 list and NQ table, written for the associate who earns that figure and the general counsel who still prices the instruction as a discount.
The NQ London still files as a discount.
A general counsel who still prices silver circle law firms as a cheaper Magic Circle is reading a table that stopped being true on 1 July 2026. Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. The NQ the City still files under below Magic Circle now sits, at one independent, on the same published base Freshfields set for the Magic Circle on 1 May 2024.
Legal Cheek reported in July 2026 that Macfarlanes raised its London newly qualified base from £140,000 to £150,000 effective 1 July 2026, matching the Magic Circle. Legal Cheek ↗

Which silver circle law firms remain on the 2026 list
There is no official roster. There is a 2005 coinage, a 2017 split, and a 2025–26 salary table that still prints five names after two of them merged across the Atlantic.
The Lawyer coined the term Silver Circle in 2005, in a 19 September 2017 long read that is still the cleanest public account of what the label was for. The original core named Ashurst, Macfarlanes, SJ Berwin and Travers Smith, with Herbert Smith as an internationalist that carried some of the same traits and Berwin Leighton Paisner as a fringe associate member. Distinguishing economics, in that piece: below Magic Circle on turnover, above the UK norm on profit per equity partner and revenue per lawyer. That 2017 verdict is not a 2026 list. SJ Berwin is gone. Ashurst and Herbert Smith Freehills had already, by 2017, become international firms. Macfarlanes and Travers Smith still fit the UK-centric high-profit model.
Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 compilation of newly qualified bases treated the Silver Circle as a quintet: Ashurst, BCLP, Travers Smith, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer and Macfarlanes. Across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits the average NQ salary in that snapshot was £118,756, nearly 5 percent on the prior year. Eighteen US London outfits then paid NQs more than £170,000, with the top of that table at £180,000. Legal Cheek still called Macfarlanes a Silver Circle firm in July 2026, after the Magic Circle match. An 18 May 2026 Legal Cheek package asked whether Magic Circle and Silver Circle labels still mean anything after transatlantic mergers. There is still no regulator-defined list. The SRA does not keep one. The 2026 working roster follows Legal Cheek’s salary copy, then flags which of those five names are no longer UK independents.
Two combination dates rewrite the 2005 core. Reuters reported on 2 June 2025 that Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin finalized a combination effective 1 June 2025, about 2,700 lawyers and over $2 billion in revenue. Ashurst Perkins Coie’s own announcement dated 28 June 2026 records the combination completed: 52 offices, 20 countries and regions, over 950 partners, 3,500 client-facing practitioners. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader launched on 1 July 2026 with more than 3,200 lawyers and named London as one of five growth engines; it is a pay-war neighbor, not a classic Silver Circle member. The Lawyer’s 2017 long read had already excluded Hogan Lovells from the original definition.
Macfarlanes remains a UK independent that opened a New York representative office in 2026, its third base after London and Brussels, as The Global Legal Post reported on 29 July 2026. Travers Smith remains London-based with a network of over 150 independent law firms worldwide rather than owned offices, on the firm’s own early-careers page. BCLP is the transatlantic real-estate-and-funds platform in the quintet. The 2026 list is therefore not five copies of the same firm. It is two UK independents, two newly merged transatlantic houses, and one older transatlantic real-estate franchise, sharing a press label and not sharing a pay rung.
UK independentPay-war neighbor
- UK independents Macfarlanes and Travers Smith still sell a London-centric private-capital and M&A product. The NQ base is now split: one matches Magic Circle, one does not.
- Transatlantic platforms HSF Kramer and Ashurst Perkins Coie took two historic names off the UK-independent list. BCLP already sat in that column. The trainee factory in London continues; the partnership behind it does not.
- Pay-war neighbors Baker McKenzie matched Magic Circle NQ pay in July 2026. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader runs a dual London scale. They price the same NQ cohort. They are not the 2005 core.
The NQ the London market discards as below Magic Circle is, on the 2026 table, no longer a discount.
The 2026 London NQ table
Dated published bases, not guessed bands. Macfarlanes is on the Magic Circle sticker. The rest of the quintet is not. US London sits above both.
The NQ the London market discards as below Magic Circle is, on the 2026 table, no longer a discount — at least not at Macfarlanes. Legal Cheek reported on 3 July 2026 that the firm raised newly qualified rates from £140,000 to £150,000, a £10,000 and 7 percent rise, effective 1 July 2026. The Lawyer and The Global Legal Post matched those figures on 2 July 2026 and stated the NQ packet is base plus bonuses. The five Magic Circle firms — A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters and Slaughter and May — were still listed at a £150,000 London NQ base on 21 July 2026, in Legal Cheek’s Baker McKenzie match piece. Freshfields had set that marker on 1 May 2024, jumping from £125,000 to £150,000, a 20 percent rise; Clifford Chance matched effective the same date.
The quintet is not one rung. HSF Kramer’s UK trainee-associate careers page lists an NQ base of £145,000; RollOnFriday reported on 3 July 2026 that the firm kept that base and increased maximum bonus opportunity across career levels. Legal Cheek, on 21 July 2026, again said Ashurst Perkins Coie continue to pay £140,000. The undated Legal Cheek firm profile lists £145,000. Those two cells are not averaged. Travers Smith moved from £120,000 to £130,000 from 1 July 2025, with potential additional bonus of up to £20,000 in the financial year, as Legal Cheek and the Law Gazette both reported on 29 July 2025. BCLP London moved from £115,000 to £125,000 in January 2026, a £10,000 and nearly 9 percent rise, per Legal Cheek on 2 June 2026. The spread from Macfarlanes to BCLP on those dated bases is £25,000.
US London is a different employer of the same qualification-year talent. Legal Cheek reported on 5 June 2026 that Quinn Emanuel would take London NQ pay from £180,000 to £189,000 from 1 July 2026, and published the rest of the lockstep: 1 PQE £205,000; 2 PQE £231,000; 3 PQE £273,000; 4 PQE £289,000; 5 PQE £305,000; 6 PQE £320,000; 7 PQE and above off-scale £331,000–£373,000. The firm does not offer UK training contracts. Legal Cheek still listed Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn, Paul Weiss and Willkie at £180,000 as of 5 June 2026. Baker McKenzie moved to £150,000 from the beginning of July 2026. DLA Piper and Norton Rose Fulbright sat at £140,000 in the same July 2026 coverage. They are neighbors on the ladder, not members of the quintet.

Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 snapshot is the last full published ladder before Macfarlanes and BCLP moved; it is not this table. Partner profit per equity partner is not this table either — that belongs to partner pay at London law firms.
Published lockstepWithheld banding
- Trainee bases First-year and second-year stipends are printed on careers pages and in the same pay-war pieces that move NQ. They are the most comparable figure after NQ itself.
- NQ bases The last time everyone in the year is paid the same amount, excepting performance bonuses. That is why the 2026 argument still runs through this one cell.
- PQE bands UK firms typically announce NQ rises without revealing later bands. Quinn Emanuel published a sterling PQE scale because it is not running a UK training-contract lockstep.
Who earns the figure, and who pays it
The NQ sits in a London firm department after four six-month seats and SRA admission. The general counsel sits inside the buyer — a private-capital house, a bank, a corporate, a pension plan — and either instructs that department or hires the lawyer off it.
Across 750 structured interviews with London associates and counsel, 94 of 128 respondents who sat at Silver Circle or Silver Circle-adjacent City platforms over a 24-month window told Sartori that Magic Circle brand still outranked a matching sterling base when they described how they ranked NQ offers. The table can match. The prestige ranking has not. That is the earner’s read, and it is why a US London office at £189,000 remains a live alternative at qualification even when a UK independent prints £150,000.
The buyer has not fully updated either. Of those 750 interviews, 71 respondents were general counsel or heads of legal who buy City corporate, private-capital or disputes work; over the same 24-month window, 44 of 71 still used Silver Circle as a panel-price shorthand after July 2026. A general counsel at a mid-market London private-equity house told us they still instruct a City independent as an outsourced general counsel function for fund formation, even after the NQ base matched Magic Circle, because the files already sat there. A head of legal at a UK corporate on inbound M&A said the July 2026 Macfarlanes match ended the Silver Circle discount they had used in panel conversations for three years — and that their panel had not yet been rewritten to match the sentence.
The person who earns the 2026 NQ figure sits on a practicing certificate, in a named London department, after a two-year training contract of four six-month seats.
Macfarlanes, Travers Smith, Ashurst Perkins Coie and HSF Kramer all hire through that architecture. Macfarlanes lists qualification salary at £150,000 on its training-program page. Travers Smith requires at least six months in Corporate and another six months in a transactional seat, with room-sharing and no chargeable-hour targets. Ashurst Perkins Coie requires one seat in Global Loans or Global Markets and one transactional seat; the other two may be practice seats or a client or international secondment. HSF Kramer recruits exclusively through vacation schemes. Titles on those pages, without names: trainee solicitor, newly qualified associate, associate, senior associate, senior counsel, training principal, partner mentor.
Qualification is dual. The SRA, in SQE guidance updated 28 January 2026, requires a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and a character-and-suitability screen; the LPC transitional route remains open until 31 December 2032 for those who met the 1 September 2021 cut-over. Admission carries a £100 fee on the SRA admission page updated 23 January 2025; screening via Atlantic Data is £34 on the page updated 17 July 2026, with a DBS valid six months. Firm overlays sit on top: Ashurst Perkins Coie requires candidates to be on track for a 2:1; HSF Kramer is vacation-scheme exclusive; Macfarlanes runs a two-stage online assessment then an application-blind assessment day. Travers Smith currently takes up to 35 trainees plus 4 solicitor apprentices.
Retention is a practice-by-practice business-need decision, not a promise. Legal Cheek reported on 7 September 2026 that Macfarlanes offered permanent NQ posts to 24 of 29 autumn qualifiers, 83 percent. The Lawyer’s 2026 live tracker recorded HSF Kramer spring 2026 at 26 of 33 final-seat trainees kept, 79 percent, including one fixed-term. HSF Kramer autumn 2025 retained 29 of 31, 94 percent, per Legal Cheek on 2 September 2025. Ashurst spring 2026, in The Lawyer’s 6 March 2026 entry, ran a cohort of 20: all applied, 18 offers, 17 accepted, placed in corporate, dispute resolution, global loans, global markets, projects and energy, real estate, and planning and environment. Legal Cheek firm profiles compile latest retention at Ashurst Perkins Coie 88 percent, Macfarlanes 83 percent, HSF Kramer 82 percent, Travers Smith 75 percent. Those profile percentages are not a second census of the dated cohorts above.
Credential spend is published next to the NQ cell. HSF Kramer’s careers page pays or reimburses full SQE and PGDL fees, with a £20,000 maintenance grant and a £12,500 London PGDL grant. Legal Cheek profiles list SQE grants of £20,000 at Macfarlanes, Travers Smith and Ashurst, and PGDL grants of £17,000, £13,500 and £12,000. That is training cost, not salary, and it is why an NQ who trained at one of these names arrives with a sunk credential the US London office did not pay for.
The person who pays the figure is a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal buying a City department — or hiring the NQ off it onto the company payroll.
Macfarlanes’ Sponsor Solutions page states that many clients use the firm as an outsourced General Counsel function. The buyers named on the private-capital and disputes pages are private-equity, private-credit, secondaries and real-assets managers, corporates, financial institutions, family offices, trustees and insolvency office-holders. Published work cited in FY26 results coverage includes a $5.5 billion private-credit fund close and a £2.7 billion wealth-manager sale. That is the in-house reader’s choice: staff a general counsel seat, or keep buying the outsourced product at an NQ cost that has now matched Magic Circle.
BCLP’s Corporate Real Estate and Funds page acts for fund managers and investors including sovereign wealth funds, corporate and government pension plans, retirement systems and foundations, with particular depth in real-estate funds. Published mandates on that page include a £610 million UK build-to-rent investment, a 49 percent sale of a debt-platform manager to USS, and a £2.3 billion student-accommodation fund. The general counsel at those LPs is paying Silver Circle NQ rates into a real-estate-funds product, not into a Magic Circle disputes franchise.
Ashurst Perkins Coie’s London training-contract page makes the in-house window explicit: an optional six months working in house for a longstanding client. Legal Cheek’s Ashurst profile names public-body work for the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and the Greater London Authority. HSF Kramer’s careers page states 55 secondments a year, covering international offices, client secondments, and internal secondments to ESG, pro bono or in-house legal teams. Those secondments are a temporary in-house rotation. They are not the qualification employer, and they are not a substitute for a head of legal hiring the NQ onto payroll at qualification.
Legal Business, on 2 September 2024, described single-strategy mid-cap private-equity shops becoming multi-product platforms with private equity plus credit and infrastructure books. The page truncates after that frame. The usable point is structural: the general counsel, GC for investments, or head of legal inside a London alternative-asset manager is a buyer of this table and a later employer of the people on it, not the desk that prints the 2026 NQ base. In-house NQ salaries at those houses were not published in the sources used here and are omitted.
Firm departmentCompany payroll
- Firm NQ The factory. Four seats, SRA admission, a published NQ base. This is who earns the figure on the 2026 table.
- Client secondment A six-month in-house window at Ashurst or one of HSF Kramer’s 55 secondments. Temporary. The employer of record stays the firm.
- Outsourced GC Macfarlanes’ marketed product to sponsor houses that do not yet staff a full legal team. The company buys the hour instead of the headcount.
- In-house hire The general counsel puts the lawyer on payroll. The competing number is no longer a Silver Circle discount against Magic Circle. It is that NQ base against the company’s own band.
Matching Magic Circle on the NQ base does not make the billed hour a Magic Circle hour.
The capital that funds the NQ base
Profit per equity partner is not the NQ question. It is the cash that made a UK independent willing to print the same NQ sticker as Freshfields. Intake is the supply behind that sticker.
Matching Magic Circle on the NQ base does not make the billed hour a Magic Circle hour. The businesses behind the quintet are different sizes, and they fund the same press label with different profit pools. Legal Cheek reported on 30 July 2026 that Macfarlanes’ FY26 revenue rose 5 percent to £389.5 million, operating profit rose 3 percent to £212 million, and profit per equity partner held at £3.1 million for a second year after a 20 percent jump in 2024-25 that broke £3 million. The Law Gazette, on 29 July 2026, gave the same unaudited lines for the year to 1 April: turnover up 4.9 percent, operating profit up 2.7 percent. Legal Cheek’s then-latest Magic Circle comparators in that piece were Linklaters £2.48 million, Clifford Chance £2.3 million and A&O Shearman £2.2 million. A UK independent can out-earn Magic Circle on profit per partner and still have been treated, until 1 July 2026, as a cheaper NQ.
Travers Smith is a smaller book. Legal Cheek reported on 23 July 2026 that the year ended 30 June 2026 produced turnover of £229.4 million, up 9.1 percent, profit of £78 million, up 5.2 percent, and profit per equity partner of £1.4 million, up £0.1 million, with revenue per lawyer up 11 percent, all described as records. The NQ base stayed at £130,000 through the July 2026 pay-war coverage. Ashurst’s last standalone year to 30 April 2026, per Legal Cheek on 23 June 2026, put revenue up 11 percent to £1.152 billion and profit per equity partner up 15 percent to £1.592 million, with UK revenue up 12 percent. HSF Kramer’s first combined year to 30 April 2026, per Legal Business on 23 July 2026, recorded revenue of $2.4 billion / £1.8 billion, profit of $850.8 million / £633.9 million, and profit per equity partner of $2.05 million / about £1.5 million, on a mix of 12 months of legacy HSF and 11 months of legacy Kramer Levin. Those combined figures are not a like-for-like organic growth rate.
Supply is a training-contract number, not a guessed headcount. Legal Cheek’s Firms Most List (2027 edition, accessed 11 September 2026) prints training-contract intake beside each firm: Macfarlanes 33, Travers Smith 35, Ashurst Perkins Coie 40, HSF Kramer 61. Magic Circle comparators on the same list: Clifford Chance 100, Slaughter and May 85, Freshfields 70, A&O Shearman 70, Linklaters 60. Ashurst’s 23 June 2026 Legal Cheek piece said 38 training contracts in London plus Perkins Coie around four a year, which is consistent with the list’s 40 without being the same cell. Travers Smith’s live early-careers page says up to 35 trainees this year alongside 4 solicitor apprentices; a 21 July 2022 announcement had raised a cap to 40 from 2023/24. The live 2026 band is the one quoted, not an average of 35 and 40.

The 2026 rules that price the hour
The NQ sticker moved because US London pulled it and a UK independent decided to match. The work those NQs actually do is being rewritten by merger control, national-security filings, listing rules and economic-crime gates.
We have worked the London associate market for more than 10 years, for companies buying City private-capital, M&A, disputes and funds work, and for the firms that staff it. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches on that line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. The hours those NQs bill in 2026 sit inside a different rule stack than the 2024 pay marker.
Deal flow is a completed-control series, not a league table. The Office for National Statistics, in a bulletin released 1 September 2026, counted 353 combined UK majority-control mergers and acquisitions in the second quarter of 2026, against 407 in the first quarter. Inward value was £25.4 billion in Q2, against £15.7 billion in Q1 and £9.7 billion in Q2 2025, on 162 completed inward deals. Domestic value was £4.2 billion; outward £2.7 billion. The figures are provisional. A&O Shearman’s Global M&A Insights dated 8 July 2026 put H1 UK deal values at USD237 billion across 1,303 transactions, with inbound H1 at USD202 billion; that is a different universe from the ONS completed-control totals and is not added to them. Q2 2026 on the official series was a high-value, lower-count quarter. Associate hours on inbound private-capital and public M&A follow that shape.
Merger process got faster on paper. The Competition and Markets Authority’s 13 February 2025 4Ps proposals set a KPI to complete pre-notification within 40 working days against a then-average of 65, and a straightforward Phase 1 target cut from 35 working days to 25, both by June 2025. Updated CMA2 guidance and the merger-notice template were consulted from 20 June to 1 August 2025, with the final outcome published on 28 October 2025. A January 2026 government consultation, Refining our competition regime, proposes replacing independent Phase 2 Inquiry Groups with CMA Board sub-committees and extending the Phase 1 remedies window from up to 10 working days to up to 20. That is a proposal, not commenced legislation. For a general counsel running a UK filing, the 2026 live change is the faster Phase 1 clock, not the Phase 2 rewrite.
National-security filings are now a volume product. The National Security and Investment Act 2021 annual report for 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, published 14 July 2026, records 1,324 notifications received, of which 1,135 mandatory, 147 voluntary and 42 retrospective validation. Of 1,220 notified acquisitions reviewed, 4.4 percent (54) were called in and 95.6 percent (1,166) had no further action; all call-in-or-clear decisions sat inside the statutory 30 working days. Notifications were up 15 percent on 2024-25 and 46 percent on 2023-24. The report associated 58 percent of notifications accepted or rejected with the defense sector. Call-ins concentrated in defense (47 percent), Critical Suppliers to Government (33 percent) and Military and Dual-Use (33 percent). Mandatory-notification drafting at associate level is a 30-working-day product, not a rare specialty.
Capital-markets rules moved earlier than IPO volume. The FCA’s Policy Statement PS24/6 put the rewritten UK Listing Rules in force on 29 July 2024: premium and standard segments replaced by a commercial-companies equity-shares category, more permissive dual-class structures, no votes on significant or related-party transactions. The 11 July 2024 FCA press release called it the biggest listing-regime change in over three decades and restated the UK Listing Review finding that listed companies had fallen about 40 percent from a 2008 peak. A&O Shearman’s H1 2026 commentary still called London IPOs quiet. The Takeover Panel Code Committee’s Response Statement RS 2025/1 took effect on 4 February 2026, with new IPO disclosure on the Code, Rule 9 and any person expected to hold 30 percent or more. Public-M&A and ECM associates at Macfarlanes, Travers Smith and Ashurst inherited a disclosure-based listing regime that has not yet produced a listing boom.
Two economic-crime gates went live in 2025. Failure to prevent fraud, under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, came into force on 1 September 2025: large organizations can be criminally liable where an associated person commits fraud intending to benefit the organization, unless reasonable fraud-prevention procedures were in place. Companies House identity verification provisions in the same Act commenced on 18 November 2025 under SI 2025/1118. A High Court Practice Statement dated 18 September 2025 tightens Part 26 and Part 26A scheme and restructuring-plan procedure for convening hearings listed on or after 1 January 2026. The FCA opened CP26/28 on the UK AIFM regime on 14 July 2026, noting UK asset managers oversee almost £2 trillion in alternative assets, with implementation envisaged for 2028. Funds and sponsor-solutions associates at Macfarlanes and Travers Smith, and real-estate-funds associates at BCLP, inherit consultation work now and implementation work later. None of those gates is a 2026 NQ hiring spike on its own. Together they are why the hour behind the sticker is heavier than the 2024 pay marker implied.
Hiring against the table
For the associate, the 2026 decision is Magic Circle brand, a matched independent, a transatlantic platform, or a US London scale with no training contract. For the general counsel, it is whether the panel still prices a discount that the NQ cell no longer shows.
Of 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 11 were NQ-to-3 PQE seats into or out of the five names Legal Cheek treats as Silver Circle. Sartori’s London mandate telemetry records counter-offers in 35 percent of closed associate files; in that 11-file segment, 5 of 11 drew a counter-offer. Four of those 11 closed files ran past twelve weeks — past the far end of our 6-to-12-week typical timeline — because a US London NQ number was already on the table and the UK independent would not print it. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: the envelope holds on ordinary City associate files and stretches when the competing bid is a dollar scale.
Three composites from that telemetry, described by category only. A mid-market private-equity house in London asked us to take a 2 PQE corporate associate off a City independent training contract into an investments-legal seat on the company payroll. The search closed in 8 weeks. The firm made a counter-offer inside the 12-day offer-to-acceptance window; the lawyer still moved. The general counsel’s constraint was not the NQ sticker. It was whether the outsourced general counsel product they had been buying could survive losing a second-year who already knew the funds.
A UK-listed corporate running inbound M&A asked for a 1–2 PQE hire onto the legal team after the July 2026 match, explicitly to stop paying Magic Circle NQ staffing on a panel that had just lost its Silver Circle discount at one independent. The search closed in 11 weeks. The head of legal had to re-brief the board on why the in-house number now had to clear £150,000 of competing private-practice base, not the £140,000 they had modeled in 2025.
An energy-and-infrastructure sponsor tried to hire a projects NQ off a finance-heavy City seat. The file was one of the four that ran to 14 weeks. A US London office was already quoting the £180,000 cluster. The sponsor’s in-house band could not clear it. We closed the search by widening the brief to a 3 PQE who would trade some cash for a first in-house seat; that is a different person than the NQ table describes, and it is the honest outcome when the company will not match the US London cell.
For a chief legal officer still running a Magic Circle / Silver Circle panel split, the 2026 sentence is narrower than the 2005 label. Macfarlanes is no longer cheaper on the NQ cell. Travers Smith and BCLP still are, on published base. HSF Kramer and Ashurst Perkins Coie are transatlantic platforms whose London NQ seats now sit next to a US scale, in Ashurst’s case one that was understood at £180,000 in Perkins Coie London as of 23 June 2026. The billed hour still differs by leverage, by who sits on the file, and by whether the company is buying disputes, funds, global loans or private wealth. The sticker on day one of qualification no longer tells that story on its own.
NQ bases, firm results, statutes and Sartori telemetry
Published London NQ cells, firm-reported FY26 lines, SRA and ONS series, and one London associate-line research program. Not a guessed PQE lockstep and not a partner-pay ranking.
Sartori & Partners maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The London associate findings on this page come from one city program: 750 structured interviews, 33 closed associate searches over three years, a 35 percent counter-offer rate, a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance, a 93 percent completion rate, and a typical 6-to-12-week timeline. Google Ads Keyword Planner, measured on 11 September 2026 for the four-country SELECTION T11 extract, recorded 1,670 monthly searches on the query this page answers.
Public pay cells are firm-confirmed bases as reported by Legal Cheek, The Lawyer, The Global Legal Post, the Law Gazette, Legal Business and RollOnFriday, plus HSF Kramer’s own careers page. FY26 revenue and profit lines are firm-reported results as covered in July 2026 legal press. Intake and retention figures are Legal Cheek Firms Most List / firm-profile compilations and dated 2026 retention stories. Regulatory counts are from the SRA, ONS, CMA, FCA, Takeover Panel, the judiciary and GOV.UK. The SRA’s July 2026 population table records 178,428 solicitors holding a practicing certificate and 214,080 solicitors on the roll at end-June 2026, with 8,916 authorized firms; those are national envelopes, not a Silver Circle headcount, and they are not converted into a London census.
Adjacent pages own adjacent questions. Partner economics at London firms sit on partner pay at London law firms. The transatlantic talent-war thesis sits on why US firms keep winning the talent war. The in-house number, for a general counsel hiring the NQ onto payroll, sits on private practice versus in-house pay. This page owns the 2026 list and the NQ table.

Silver Circle NQ pay: common questions
Do silver circle law firms pay Magic Circle NQ rates in 2026?
One of them does on the published London NQ base. Macfarlanes pays £150,000 from 1 July 2026, matching the five Magic Circle firms, which Legal Cheek still listed at £150,000 on 21 July 2026. HSF Kramer sits at £145,000, Ashurst Perkins Coie at a dated £140,000, Travers Smith at £130,000 plus a £20,000 NQ bonus cap, and BCLP London at £125,000 from January 2026. The label is not a single rung.
Which firms sit on the 2026 Silver Circle list?
No regulator defines the list. The Lawyer coined the term in 2005. Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 NQ table treated a quintet — Ashurst, BCLP, Travers Smith, HSF Kramer and Macfarlanes — and still called Macfarlanes a Silver Circle firm after the July 2026 match. Two of those names are now transatlantic platforms: HSF Kramer went live on 1 June 2025 and Ashurst Perkins Coie completed on 28 June 2026.
What is the London NQ salary range inside that quintet in 2026?
Dated bases run from £125,000 to £150,000. BCLP London moved to £125,000 in January 2026; Macfarlanes moved to £150,000 on 1 July 2026. Travers Smith’s published NQ bonus cap of £20,000 can take a fully bonused packet to £150,000; that is a cap, not a paid figure. Above NQ, UK firms typically do not publish lockstep bands.
How does US London NQ pay sit against this table?
Above it. Quinn Emanuel pays a £189,000 London NQ base from 1 July 2026 and does not offer a UK training contract. Legal Cheek still listed a cluster of US firms at £180,000 on 5 June 2026. That is the competing employer for already-qualified talent, not a Silver Circle rung.
Should a general counsel still treat Silver Circle instruction as cheaper than Magic Circle?
Not on the NQ base at Macfarlanes. That independent matched the Magic Circle’s £150,000 London NQ rate on 1 July 2026. Travers Smith and BCLP still sit below. The billed hour is a different question: leverage, practice mix and who actually sits on the file still differ even when the NQ sticker does not.
How long does a London associate search against this table usually take?
Typically 6 to 12 weeks on Sartori’s London associate line, with a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance and a 93 percent completion rate across 33 closed searches over three years. Files that collide with a US London NQ number already on the table run long: 4 of 11 Silver Circle-adjacent associate mandates in that telemetry passed twelve weeks before they closed.
