Salary · Sydney 2026
A Sydney associate paycheck is a firm-size cut, not an NQ letter.
Private-practice solicitors reported average FY2023-24 gross income of A$194,987. Firms with 50 or more principals sit in a different part of that survey from one-to-four-principal practices. No Big 8 careers page published a 2026 Sydney class-year ladder. The question is which cut you are matching.
The average is not the seat.
Law firm associate salary Sydney is the firm-size cut inside a private-practice average of A$194,987, not a class-year letter. The large-firm tail, not that average, is what clears a seat at a firm with 50 or more principals.
In the Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile, 35 percent of respondents in practices with 50 or more principals reported more than A$250,000 for FY2023-24, and 6 percent reported A$100,000 or less. That is the large-firm cut.
The sector averages sit in the table below. The firm-size dollars are unpacked next.

What law firm associate salary Sydney is on the last survey.
The income year is FY2023-24. The profile that carries it was published in 2026. Between those dates, no cited firm page replaced the survey with a class-year ladder.
Private-practice solicitors averaged A$194,987 in FY2023–24. That sentence is the Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile, prepared from the practicing-certificate census at 30 June 2025 and the income question on the renewal survey. The same table puts every respondent at A$184,980, corporate legal respondents at A$235,439, and government respondents at A$152,978. Twenty-seven percent of private-practice respondents reported more than A$200,000. These are self-reported gross figures, mixed full-time and part-time. They are not a 2026 offer letter.
Firm size is the cut that changes the bid. In practices with 50 or more principals, 35 percent of respondents reported more than A$250,000 and 6 percent reported A$100,000 or less. In practices with one to four principals, 40 percent reported A$100,000 or less and 9 percent reported more than A$250,000. The 2025 Annual Profile, Table 15, is the source for both pairs. A general counsel who opens a four-year banking associate at A$194,987 has priced the blend, not the seat.
On the 30 June 2025 census in that profile, practices with 200 or more solicitors were 0.2 percent of private law practices and employed 25 percent of non-principal employees in private practice. The associate a company is trying to hire out of a CBD banking or disputes group is more likely to sit in that thin slice than in the one-to-four-principal mass that pulls the average down. Chambers Global and Asia-Pacific 2026 place Ashurst Perkins Coie, Gilbert + Tobin, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, Allens and King & Wood Mallesons in Band 1 for Banking & Finance: Corporate Finance, Australia, with Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Clayton Utz in Band 2. Those names locate the work. They do not print the paycheck.
At the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of US$0.7172 per Australian dollar on 11 September 2026, A$194,987 is about US$139,800 and A$250,000 is US$179,300. A$100,000 is US$71,720. Those are conversions of lagged survey thresholds, not USD salaries anyone was paid in 2026. A treasury ceiling written in dollars still has to survive that spot on the day the approval paper is signed.
CSO graduate floor, 11 September 2026
Bottom of the Grade I-III band the Crown Solicitor's Office was advertising. About US$67,000 at the 11 September 2026 Reserve Bank rate. Not a firm NQ.
Crown Solicitor's Office; Crown Employees award ↗The associate seat is an employee certificate in a CBD practice mix.
NSW had 20,140 employee-of-a-law-practice certificates at 30 June 2026. That stock is the supply a firm associate salary is bid against. It is not a pay scale.
The Law Society’s July 2026 statistics PDF records 45,208 NSW practicing certificates at 30 June 2026. City of Sydney held 21,872 and suburban Sydney 14,835, together 36,707. Principals of a law practice were 10,727. Employees of a law practice were 20,140. Corporate legal practitioner certificates were 9,042. A corporate certificate does not authorize work as an employee of a law practice. Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) section 47 is the split, as the Law Society’s categories page restates it: an employee certificate authorizes employee, corporate or government practice, and does not authorize practice as a principal.
One year earlier, the 2025 Annual Profile put 49 percent of certificates in the Sydney CBD and 33 percent in suburban Sydney. Among Sydney CBD respondents in that survey (n=7,283), commercial law was 29 percent, corporate law 23 percent, civil litigation 21 percent, litigation generally 18 percent, and banking and finance 13 percent. Suburban Sydney (n=3,983) was a different mix: commercial 36 percent, conveyancing 29 percent, wills and estates 28 percent, banking and finance 5 percent. Shares overlap because a solicitor may name more than one area. The associate a bank or a listed issuer is hiring is in the CBD mix. A suburban wills practice is a different salary.
Firm associateA different product
- Employee certificate The associate seat at a CBD firm. The survey cut that matters is firm size, not the all-sector average.
- Government graduate A published 2026 floor at the Crown Solicitor’s Office. Useful as a boundary. Useless as a CBD firm letter.
- Corporate certificate The in-house seat the associate moves into. Older on admission, different cash, different page.
The national frame is larger and older. The 2024 National Profile of Solicitors counted 97,500 solicitors in Australia at October 2024, of whom 41,304 were in NSW, 42 percent. That census does not price a Sydney class year. NSW held the largest single share of the national profession the last time a national profile was published.
| Seat | What is published | Certificate | The usual mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employee at a firm with 50 or more principals | FY2023-24 tail: 35 percent over A$250,000; 6 percent at A$100,000 or less | Employee of a law practice | Opening the offer on the all-firm average of A$194,987 |
| Employee at a one-to-four-principal practice | FY2023-24: 40 percent at A$100,000 or less; 9 percent over A$250,000 | Employee of a law practice | Importing a large-firm tail into a suburban practice |
| Newly admitted, government graduate seat | A$93,413-A$106,182 advertised 11 September 2026 | Government legal practitioner | Treating the Crown band as a CBD firm NQ letter |
| Associate hired out of the firm into a company | Corporate average A$235,439, and a stock in which 51 percent were admitted 15 years or more | Corporate legal practitioner | Matching the corporate average as if it were a three-year associate |
The private-practice average is the number people quote. The large-firm tail is the number that clears the seat.
Newly qualified cash in Sydney is a supervision rule plus one government band.
Allens, Clayton Utz and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer describe how a graduate rotates. They do not describe what the graduate is paid in 2026. The Crown Solicitor's Office does, and it is not their market.
Fair Work’s Legal Award [MA000116] does not cover a qualified lawyer. Once the graduate is admitted, the national award floor is gone, and nothing in the public record cited here replaces it with a CBD firm scale. Allens describes a Sydney clerkship feeding a two-year graduate program. Clayton Utz describes three rotations of six months. Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer describes an 18-month program of three rotations. Accessed in 2026, those pages still published structure and still did not publish cash.
Condition 2 is the other half of an NQ bid. The Law Society’s supervised-practice page states that a solicitor who qualified through practical legal training must complete 24 months of supervised legal practice, full-time or the part-time equivalent, and must apply to have the condition removed. Supervision can sit inside a company, but only under a person authorized to supervise. A small legal department that cannot name that person cannot hire a newly admitted solicitor onto a clock of 12 working days and discover the gap after the offer.
Of 54 private-practice associates at three to eight years’ post-qualification in firms with 50 or more principals, inside the same 250 structured interviews with Sydney lawyers, over 18 months, 19 said their firm had not shown them a written class-year scale. A hiring partner at a CBD firm with 50 or more principals put the same fact in one line: The NQ figure is set when we convert clerks. We do not publish a scale.
Already on paperStill not a firm ladder
- Survey year The income year in the profile. The last profession-wide private-practice average.
- Certificate census The mid-year stock. Employees, principals, City, suburban. A headcount, not a salary.
- Government floor The Crown graduate advertisement. The only current cash band in this set.
- Firm letter Rotations on the careers pages. No dollar. Waiting does not create one.
The general counsel is matching a tail, or funding the firm that pays it.
Two checks leave a CBD firm with an associate on the payroll. A company hires that person out. A company also pays the firm’s invoice while the person stays. Both checks fail when they are written against the wrong cut.
Lawyers Weekly, on 3 September 2025, reported overall demand up 3.6 percent in FY2024–25, against a 10-year average of 3.7 percent and against 7.5 percent the year before. Banking and finance demand rose 9.4 percent. Workplace relations rose 7.4 percent. The 27 August 2025 report of the same series put large firms outside the Big 8 at 5.4 percent demand growth and the Big 8 at 1 percent. Worked rates were up more than 4 percent for a fourth year, and fees worked were up 8.6 percent, while utilization fell 0.7 percent. A company matching a banking associate in 2026 is matching a practice that was already the fast bar, not a quiet seat waiting on a lockstep memo.
A general counsel at an ASX-listed issuer in Sydney said the bid without a scale attached: We priced the five-year banking associate off the large-firm tail, not off the private-practice average. That file closed in 10 weeks and is one of the 11 in-house seats on the associate line.
Your exposure is a mis-specified cut, not a missing graduate class.
- Name the certificate. Employee of a law practice if the seat stays in the firm. Corporate if you are hiring the person out. Section 47 does not let one letter do both jobs.
- Open on the tail. A three-to-six-year associate from a firm with 50 or more principals is not the A$194,987 blend. Table 15 is the public reason.
- Do not wait for a letter. Allens, Clayton Utz and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer have not published 2026 cash. The Crown band will not become their letter by July.
- Cap the superannuation. Twelve percent has applied since 1 July 2025. The 2026–27 maximum contribution base is A$270,830. Above it, the compulsory dollar stops.
- Pick the desk. Firm-side seats sit on associate recruiting. The hire out of the firm sits on in-house counsel recruiting.
Your letter is only a large-firm number if the firm size and the certificate match what you think you are signing.
- Read the firm size. The FY2023–24 average mixes firms with 50 or more principals and one-to-four-principal practices. Ask which one is on the letterhead.
- Ask for the scale. Median time from offer to acceptance on Sartori’s Sydney associate line is 12 working days. A scale that was never written will not appear inside that window.
- Separate the government floor. A$93,413 to A$106,182 is a Crown Solicitor’s Office advertisement from 11 September 2026. It is a boundary, not your CBD number.
- Treat in-house as a different seat. The corporate average and the certificate change are on the Sydney in-house salary page.
An NQ figure that is not on the careers page is not a bid a company can wait for.
Superannuation, utilization and a stronger dollar move the package without a new scale.
The FY2023-24 survey does not know the 11 September 2026 exchange rate, and the exchange rate does not know firm size. A board paper that uses one of them as a substitute for the other is pricing a third number nobody published.
The Superannuation Guarantee has been 12 percent since 1 July 2025. The Australian Taxation Office, on 5 June 2025, described that step as the final scheduled increase. The super guarantee tables keep 12.00 percent for 1 July 2026 through 30 June 2027. The 2026–27 maximum contribution base is A$270,830 a year. An associate package written at A$250,000 still draws 12 percent on the slice under the cap. A package written far above the cap does not draw 12 percent on every dollar. Payday Super, from 1 July 2026, changes when the contribution must reach the fund. It does not change this percentage. The cap is what an associate offer actually costs. The Sydney lawyer salary page carries the payroll clock.
Utilization moved the other way from rates. The 3 September 2025 Lawyers Weekly account of the Thomson Reuters series put utilization down 0.7 percent in FY2024–25 while worked rates rose more than 4 percent and fees worked rose 8.6 percent. A firm can pay the large-firm tail and still be selling fewer hours per lawyer than the year before. A company that matches the tail and also expects last year’s utilization is buying a rate increase the survey already recorded, twice.
The dollar is the third residual. On 11 September 2026 the Reserve Bank printed US$0.7172. A stronger Australian dollar raises the US-dollar cost of an unchanged AUD package. It does not change Table 15. A general counsel who waits for a class-year letter, and whose budget is in US dollars, can pay more in dollars for the same lagged survey without anyone at the firm having published a raise.
Twenty closed searches, and four in-house files that missed the band.
Sartori works the Sydney associate line for companies hiring out of CBD firms and for firms with 50 or more principals hiring associates, in banking, corporate and disputes.
That line has been open for 5 years. Over the trailing 3 years it closed 20 associate searches, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Median time from offer to acceptance is 12 working days. Counter-offer incidence is 34 percent. Of those searches, 11 were in-house corporate seats, 6 were private-practice associate seats at CBD firms with 50 or more principals, and 3 were government-to-corporate laterals. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. The global frame behind the city file is the research program on our research page.
Sartori maps roughly 6,500 lawyers in Sydney. That map is a separate file from the interview cohort.
Of the 11 in-house seats, 4 ran past the 6-to-12-week band. In each of them, Condition 2 or a certificate-category mismatch was discovered after the shortlist. The cash conversation was not the slow part. A corporate certificate does not authorize work as an employee of a law practice, and a hire who still carries Condition 2 needs an authorized supervisor on the same desk. That is the finding that cuts against the method. The 6 private-practice seats were priced off firm size, because the careers pages cited above do not print a class-year letter to wait for.
Three composites sit inside the 11, described by category only. A superannuation trustee with a Sydney spoke hired a senior legal counsel for investments. The search closed in 8 weeks on a package referenced to the corporate average, not to a firm lockstep. The complication was whether the corporate certificate was current and whether Condition 2 had already been lifted.
An ASX-listed issuer with a Sydney CBD legal department hired a 5-year banking associate from a firm with 50 or more principals. The company opened on the large-firm tail rather than on A$194,987. A counter-offer arrived, consistent with the 34 percent incidence on the line, and the 12-day acceptance window still held. The search closed in 10 weeks.
The third file is the one that cuts against the method. A 4-lawyer legal department at a listed company opened a junior commercial seat at a discount to the private-practice average and discovered in week 6 that no one on the desk was authorized to supervise under Condition 2. The search was re-briefed as a mid-level corporate-certificate hire and closed in week 14, outside the band. It still counts inside the 20.
Google Ads Keyword Planner, measured 11 September 2026, recorded 0 monthly searches for this associate-salary query. A general counsel and an associate are reading the same firm-size cut. It is not a traffic bet. The company that needs the seat filled starts at a confidential hiring conversation. The lawyer weighing a letter starts from firm size and the certificate, not from a class year that was never published.
- Q1 Is the seat an employee of a firm with 50 or more principals, or something else? If it is a one-to-four-principal practice, a Crown graduate seat, or a corporate certificate, you are in a different row of the comparison table.
- Q2 Are you years three to six, or newly admitted? If newly admitted, budget Condition 2 and do not wait for a Big 8 letter. 4 in-house files ran past 12 weeks on a supervision gap, not on a missing class-year dollar.
- Q3 Does the package cross the A$270,830 superannuation cap? If yes, 12 percent does not apply to every dollar. Price the cap on the first paper.
- → All three answered, and the seat is a mid-level associate at a firm with 50 or more principals? Bid the large-firm tail, keep the FY2023–24 year on the paper, and do not invent a class-year ladder to dress the letter.
Law firm associate salary in Sydney, 2026: questions from both sides of the letter
What is law firm associate salary Sydney in 2026?
It is not a class-year ladder: private-practice solicitors averaged A$194,987 in FY2023–24. The Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile is the source, and the income year is FY2023–24 even though the profile landed in 2026. At firms with 50 or more principals, 35 percent of respondents reported more than A$250,000, and 6 percent reported A$100,000 or less. Sartori closed 20 Sydney associate searches over 3 years on that split between the average and the tail.
What published 2026 band exists for a Sydney graduate solicitor?
The Crown Solicitor’s Office advertised Graduate Solicitor seats on 11 September 2026 at A$93,413–A$106,182. That is a government award floor plus employer superannuation, not a private-practice lockstep. Allens, Clayton Utz and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer publish clerkship-to-graduate rotations and do not publish 2026 cash. Fair Work’s Legal Award [MA000116] does not cover a lawyer who has been admitted.
Should a company match the private-practice average for a large-firm associate?
No: 35 percent of respondents at firms with 50 or more principals reported more than A$250,000 in FY2023–24. The A$194,987 average mixes those firms with one-to-four-principal practices, where 40 percent reported A$100,000 or less. A general counsel hiring a three-to-six-year associate out of a CBD firm with 50 or more principals is matching the tail. Of Sartori’s 20 closed searches, 6 were private-practice seats at CBD firms with 50 or more principals.
Do in-house lawyers in Sydney earn the same as law firm associates?
No: corporate respondents averaged A$235,439, and 51 percent had been admitted 15 years or more, against 40 percent in private practice. That corporate figure is a senior in-house stock, not an associate scale. The Sydney in-house table is a different page. A move out of a firm is also a certificate change under Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) section 47.
How long does Sartori take to close a Sydney associate search?
Typical files close in 6 to 12 weeks, and the median from offer to acceptance is 12 working days. That book is 20 closed Sydney associate searches over 3 years, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a desk that has worked this market for 5 years. Counter-offer incidence is 34 percent. Of the 11 in-house seats, 4 ran past 12 weeks because Condition 2 or a certificate mismatch showed up after the shortlist.
How should a US-dollar budget read a Sydney associate package?
Convert at a dated Reserve Bank print: on 11 September 2026 the rate was US$0.7172 per Australian dollar. A$194,987 is about US$139,800 at that spot, and A$250,000 is US$179,300. Compulsory superannuation is 12 percent of qualifying earnings up to the 2026–27 maximum contribution base of A$270,830. Cash above that cap does not automatically draw another 12 percent.
The certificate survey, the June 2026 census, and the careers pages that omit cash.
Private-practice income is the Law Society profile for FY2023-24. Headcount is the July 2026 statistics PDF. The only 2026 graduate dollars are the Crown Solicitor's Office advertisement. Firm pages contribute rotations, not a scale.
