Cooley salary 2026: the cells a company can actually see.

Two public cash figures, two seniority conventions, two licenses. A general counsel matching “the Cooley number” and the associate who earns it are rarely looking at the same cell.

Two public cells. Neither is a 2026 class-year grid.

Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, companies filling a Cooley-trained tech-associate seat in 2026 can see two public cash cells: a Cooley-posted US summer rate of $225,000 still live on the firm's Law Student FAQ, and a London Cooley nq salary of £157,000 on Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 table.

Lens 01 · The US FAQ cell The live US number is a 2025 summer rate.

Cooley’s Law Student FAQ, still the live careers page in September 2026, states that compensation for the 2025 US summer associate program is $225,000 annualized, prorated for weeks worked. It is not a published first-through-eighth-year associate grid. Firm-posted. Summer, not class year.

Four public cells, two of them Cooley’s, none of them a 2026 US lockstep. The ledger is set out below.

02 The public cells

The public Cooley nq salary is a London cell.

Open the table before the narrative. Every cash figure below is firm-posted or compiled on a dated public page. A blank is a finding.

Cooley salary conversations in 2026 start in the wrong place when they start on the 2026 market lockstep. That ladder is a Milbank-led US class-year scale. Cooley’s own careers pages do not publish one. The firm-posted US cash cell, on the Law Student FAQ accessed on 11 September 2026, is the 2025 summer associate rate of $225,000 annualized. The public London newly qualified cell, on Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 table and on The Legal 500 Future Lawyers survey, is £157,000. Those two numbers sit in different currencies, different seniority conventions and different disclosure channels. They are the whole public cash picture for the associate who earns the figure and the general counsel who has to match it.

NALP’s 28 May 2025 press release on the 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey (437 offices) put the overall median first-year base at $200,000 as of 1 January 2025, and at $215,000 in firms of 701 or more lawyers. The $225,000 figure was the modal cell — 32 percent of offices, 45 percent of 701-plus offices — and the median for intellectual-property associates. Reuters restated the $200,000 and $215,000 medians the same day. Cooley’s live FAQ still sits on that modal $225,000 print. It has not, on the public pages here, moved with the June 2026 vanguard.

First-year US base medians from NALP's 2025 survey (as of 1 January 2025) set against the Cooley-posted 2025 summer cell that is still the live FAQ figure in September 2026.

03 Who hires that lawyer

The seat is trained at the firm. The unfilled req is often in-house.

The lawyer who sits on the 2026 Cooley NQ or tech-associate cell is hired into a named Cooley group. The companies that cannot put that lawyer on their own payroll are the same client types Cooley counts in the thousands.

Cooley’s US recruiting page, accessed 11 September 2026, sends summer associates into named groups whose availability “varies by office and is determined based on practice group needs.” The business-department seats that carry the tech-associate work are Corporate — emerging companies, private equity, capital markets, governance and M&A, offered in all US offices and Singapore — plus life sciences corporate partnering and licensing, technology transactions, compensation and benefits, and debt finance. Litigation-side overlays that the same companies later try to hire in-house include business litigation (425-plus litigators on that page), cyber/data/privacy (40-plus on the recruiting page; a 50 to 100 band on the practice pages) and patent counseling. London trainees rotate four six-month seats across the same labels.

Legal 500 US 2026, in a Cooley release dated 11 June 2026, put the firm in the top tier for life sciences, technology transactions, cyber law, capital markets equity offerings for issuers, and venture capital and emerging companies, across 45 ranked practice areas. Chambers UK 2026 ranks Cooley Band 1 UK-wide for life sciences transactional (eleven years ranked) and Band 2 for private-equity venture-capital investment, with Goodwin and Orrick sitting Band 1 on that table. Those labels are the ones a chief legal officer is buying when the brief says “a Cooley tech associate.”

Pays the posted cellCannot match it on cash

  1. Cooley itself Am Law 100, nearly 1,400 lawyers, single-tier partnership. Pays the FAQ summer cell and the London NQ cell. Trains the inventory the rest of this page is about.
  2. Peer tech and life-sciences firms Wilson Sonsini, Fenwick, Goodwin, Orrick and the other Band 1 and Band 2 names on the same Chambers tables. Substitute payers of a market cell, not in-house desks.
  3. The company legal team High-growth private tech, listed issuers, biotech and fund managers. Understaffed, often under a cost-cutting mandate, still sending more work out. This is the unfilled req.

The associate or NQ who earns the cell is sitting inside a law-firm practice, not an in-house team.

  • US class-year associate. A JD and a state bar, paid against a class year, recruited into a named Cooley group. New York admission, on the Board of Law Examiners page, runs through the UBE, the NYLE, the MPRE, fifty hours of qualifying pro bono and Appellate Division character and fitness.
  • London newly qualified solicitor. SQE1 and SQE2, two years of qualifying work experience, SRA suitability. Cooley adds a 2.1 degree, 128 UCAS points, and exclusive entry via the spring and summer programs. Legal Cheek’s Firms Most List page records six training contracts; latest trainee retention 100 percent.
  • Partner economics. The only public partner figure is FY2025 profit per equity partner of about $4.6 million. Cooley states a single-tier partnership. That average is not a lockstep drawing, and it is not what a company matches when it hires a deputy general counsel.

The general counsel who tries to match the cell is usually buying a financing, listing or partnering desk, not a replica of Cooley.

  • High-growth private technology. Cooley’s emerging-companies page claims 7,000-plus private company clients, including 30 percent of US-based unicorns, and 2,100-plus venture financings a year. In-house titles on those desks: corporate counsel, principal counsel, deputy or associate general counsel, counsel for strategic investments.
  • Listed issuers and life sciences. The capital-markets page puts 280-plus public companies on Cooley as principal corporate governance and securities counsel. The life-sciences partnering page claims 2,500-plus active public and private life-sciences companies and 40-plus dedicated partnering lawyers. Deputy GC, transactions; senior counsel, corporate partnering; counsel, licensing.
  • Fund managers. The fund-formation in-depth page claims counsel to 950-plus private investment fund organizations and 60-plus full-time fund-formation lawyers. The European services page prints a much larger firm-wide fund-organization count; the two pages do not reconcile, so the buyer pool sits in the hundreds to low thousands. General counsel at the manager; counsel, fund formation; often a dual-hatted CCO at an emerging manager.

The Association of Corporate Counsel’s 2025 Chief Legal Officers Survey of 772 CLOs across 20 industries and 48 countries is the hiring posture behind those titles. Understaffing is the biggest barrier. Thirty percent of CLOs planned to increase lawyer hiring that year, nearly half in larger companies — Legal Dive, restating the survey on 29 January 2025, notes ACC defines large as $1 billion-plus revenue. Forty-three percent planned to increase the volume of work outsourced to law firms, up 17 percentage points on the prior year, and 43 percent attributed that to the evolving global regulatory landscape. Forty-one percent of law departments had received a cost-cutting mandate. Seventy-nine percent of CLOs report to the CEO (83 percent in the US). Fifty-eight percent were heavily involved in M&A and other corporate transactions.

That is why the posted cell does not close the search. The company that wants a Cooley-trained tech associate is often hiring in-house and increasing outside-counsel spend in the same budget cycle. Matching $225,000 or £157,000 cash, under a cost-cutting mandate, is harder than sending the financing back to the panel. Peer firms — Wilson Sonsini on the technology and life-sciences lifecycle; Fenwick, which restates Deal Point Data 2025 as counsel on more than 40 percent of the highest-value technology IPOs in 2025 and PitchBook 2025 as business counsel to nearly 50 percent of US tech companies valued above $25 billion — can pay a market cell and keep the lawyer on the same tape. They are substitute payers, not the in-house desk this page is for.

A general counsel building that desk from a first hire, rather than adding a specialist to one, will get more from the scope and reporting-line questions in hiring your first general counsel than from another pass at the FAQ cell.

04 Two inventories

A London NQ and a US class-year are not interchangeable.

The London-versus-US gap is not an FX problem. It is two licenses, two seniority conventions and two disclosure channels, and a company brief that treats them as one seat will not close.

Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, 94 of 218 in-house hiring managers at venture-backed and listed technology and life-sciences companies over a 24-month window told Sartori they could not get a $225,000 cash match approved against a cost-cutting mandate and kept the Cooley-trained associate on outside counsel. That is the company-side read of the same two cells the decoder opened on. It is not a finding that the FAQ number is wrong. It is a finding that the FAQ number is not what fills the req.

The US class-year associate is a JD-barred lawyer inside a lockstep class year. New York admission, on the State Board of Law Examiners page, requires eligibility under Court of Appeals Rule 520.3 to 520.6 or 520.17, plus the Uniform Bar Exam, the New York Law Exam and the MPRE; the application must be filed within three years of sitting the second day of the UBE. Fifty hours of qualifying pro bono apply to exam applicants seeking admission after 1 January 2015. A Palo Alto or San Francisco seat typically needs California practice eligibility on top. Cooley’s own FAQ gives litigation joiners class-year credit for an eligible clerkship; the cash on that page is the $50,000 and $75,000 clerkship bonuses, not a 2026 lockstep step-up.

The London NQ is an England and Wales solicitor after the Solicitors Qualifying Examination. The SRA’s SQE route page, current as of August 2025, requires a degree or equivalent level 6, a pass in SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ full-time or equivalent qualifying work experience, and suitability checks. Qualifying work experience, on the SRA page updated 26 January 2024, can be gained in up to four organizations — a law firm, an in-house legal team, or another legal-services provider — and can be overseas. Cooley’s overlay is a 2.1 in any discipline, 128 UCAS points (ABB, excluding AS and general studies), name-blind applications, and exclusive recruitment through two-week spring and summer programs. The live FAQ posts a £20,000 living allowance per academic year; a 2024 brochure still hosted on the site prints a lower subsistence figure and should be treated as stale on that cell.

US class-year inventoryLondon NQ inventory

  1. US first-year JD, state bar, class year. Paid against a lockstep the firm has not posted for 2026. Cannot do reserved solicitor work in London without the SQE or a qualified-lawyer transfer.
  2. The company brief One job title, one cash number, often copied from a FAQ or a Legal Cheek table. The license, the office and the seniority convention are left for later. Later is when the search stalls.
  3. London NQ SQE, two years of qualifying work experience, four six-month seats. Paid £157,000 in sterling. Cannot sit a New York corporate desk without US admission.

Of the 11 company-side New York associate searches in the 33-file telemetry that specified Cooley-trained emerging-companies, capital-markets or life-sciences partnering experience, four ran past the 6 to 12 week window because the brief priced a London NQ cell against a US-barred class-year candidate, or the reverse. Those four still closed. They closed late, and they closed after the company had spent a quarter explaining to a board why a posted number had not produced a start date. A UK in-house general counsel cannot put a US first-year on reserved solicitor work. A New York or Bay Area corporate desk cannot substitute a Bishopsgate NQ without New York motion or exam, or California practice eligibility.

London intake is small. Legal Cheek’s Firms Most List page records six Cooley training contracts; the Cooley profile on the same site puts latest trainee retention at 100 percent. The 2024 London trainee brochure, still hosted, describes a two-year program of four six-month seats, likely including at least one business litigation seat, with the others drawn from M&A, private equity and venture capital, life sciences, finance, capital markets, technology transactions, cyber/data/privacy, and compensation and benefits. That is a single-digit London NQ class, not a US summer class. Treating the £157,000 cell as a conversion of the $225,000 FAQ cell erases the training path that produced it.

We budgeted to the FAQ cell. The associate we wanted was a London NQ who could not sit a New York desk.
A general counsel at a late-stage venture-backed software company, New York

Patent seats add a third gate the corporate NQ does not carry. The USPTO registration exam is 100 questions, with a pass of 63 of 90 scored (70 percent), plus scientific and technical qualifications under 37 CFR § 11.7; only US citizens or permanent residents may be fully registered. Cooley’s recruiting page lists a dedicated Patent 1L Summer and a 1L IP Litigation Summer. Public-body desks — USPTO and EPO, PTAB, TTAB, ITC, the SEC, the FTC, the UK CMA, the European Commission, the Department of Justice — are counterparties and occasional later employers of specialists. They are not the volume employer of the posted NQ cell. Government is not who pays this article’s associate.

05 The work behind the seat

The capital that feeds the tech-associate cell is concentrated.

Cooley's own Q2 2026 book, the NVCA tape and the IPO proceeds are why a general counsel wants this lawyer. They are not a substitute for a published 2026 scale.

Cooley’s Q2 2026 Venture Financing Report, dated 17 August 2026, recorded 166 reported venture financings representing $85.7 billion of invested capital, “driven by a large late-stage tech deal” — the highest invested-capital quarter in a series the firm dates to 2014, and more than double the first quarter. Technology: 95 deals, $73.9 billion invested, median deal size $30.5 million. Life sciences: 27 deals, $1.1 billion, median $25 million. Up rounds were 83.6 percent; down rounds 12.1 percent; flat 4.3 percent. Pre-money valuations above $100 million were 48 percent of deals. The concentration caveat is in the source. A company reading $85.7 billion as a hiring signal is reading a book that one late-stage technology deal moved.

The same day, Cooley restated PitchBook Q1/Q2 2026 global league tables as number one in the US and globally for company-side venture, for company-side deals overall, for exits, and for the UK and Ireland, with sector number ones including pharmaceuticals and biotech, IT hardware and healthcare devices. LSEG’s H1 2026 Global Private Equity & Venture Capital Review, as restated by the firm, put Cooley first for company-side venture by deal count. Underlying league-table PDFs were not; the ranks are Cooley’s restatement of PitchBook and LSEG.

Cooley's reported Q2 2026 venture book, split by sector. Invested-capital dollars, not fees. One large late-stage technology deal drove most of the dollar print.

Cooley Q2 2026 Venture Financing Report, 17 August 2026.

The market tape around that book is larger, and it is not Cooley fees. The NVCA/PitchBook Venture Monitor landing page, accessed 11 September 2026, put US startup fundraising above $400 billion in the first half of 2026, exceeding every previous full-year total. The Q1 2026 PDF recorded $267.2 billion of deal value and $347.3 billion of exit value; excluding the five largest Q1 deals and exits, those figures fall 73.2 percent and 86.6 percent. Renaissance Capital’s 2025 Annual Review, dated 2 January 2026, counted 202 US IPOs and $44.0 billion of proceeds. Its 8 September 2026 fall preview put year-to-date IPO proceeds at a record $146 billion, or $71 billion excluding SpaceX.

London deal examples that size the UK tech-associate book, from Cooley’s 17 April 2026 Growth Capital Team of the Year citation: PhysicsX $155 million, OLIX $220 million, Swap $100 million, and Uber’s investment into Wayve’s $1.5 billion financing. Global Legal Post on 16 March 2026 added Medicxi and other venture investors on Sanofi’s $1.6 billion acquisition of Vicebio, EsoBiotec on its acquisition by AstraZeneca of up to $1 billion, and Hengrui on a licensing agreement with GSK of up to $12.5 billion. Those are mandate announcements. They are not headcount, and they are not a reason to invent a 2026 class-year dollar.

Headcount is a band. Cooley’s About page, accessed 11 September 2026, states nearly 1,400 lawyers, 19 offices and 400-plus partners in a single-tier global partnership, with a workforce of more than 3,000. Chambers USA 2026 prints 375-plus partners and nearly 1,400-plus lawyers. London, on Global Legal Post’s 16 March 2026 write-up, is more than 100 lawyers after nearly doubling over ten years; Cooley’s 12 May 2025 tenth-anniversary release put London partners at 34, nearly a third promoted from within, with the office opened in 2015 at what is now 22 Bishopsgate. Offices that house the tech-associate work include Palo Alto (headquarters, 3175 Hanover Street), San Francisco, New York at 55 Hudson Yards, Boston, San Diego, Seattle, Reston, Los Angeles and Santa Monica, Chicago, Denver, Washington, DC, London, Singapore for corporate summers, Brussels for EU regulatory work, and Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai for Asia funds and foreign private issuers.

Partner pay beyond PEP is not public. FY2025 profit per equity partner of about $4.6 million, up 18.3 percent, is an Am Law-style average reported by Global Legal Post on 16 March 2026; Legal Cheek’s Cooley profile restates $4.57 million. Individual draws, points and origination credit were not on the pages successfully. A company using PEP as a proxy for what it must pay a departing Cooley partner to come in-house as general counsel is reading an average as an offer. For why that average misleads, see whether PEP is a useful metric or a vanity number.

Hours are a survey, not a target. Legal Cheek’s Cooley profile, drawing on the 2026–27 Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey of more than 2,000 UK trainees and junior associates, prints an average start of 09:06 and an average finish of 20:10, with annual target hours stated as “No targets” and 25 days of annual leave. Chance of a secondment abroad is printed at 0 percent; client secondment at 22 percent. No public US billable-hour target appears on cooley.com. It is omitted here.

06 Matching the cell

Matching the posted cell is not the same as filling the seat.

A general counsel who copies the FAQ into an offer letter still has a license problem, a bonus hole and a cost-cutting mandate. Sartori's New York associate telemetry is where that shows up as a clock.

Sartori maps New York as a dense associate market — on the order of 67,000 lawyers in the metro file — and has run this search line for more than ten years. Quarterly market surveys have run since 2019; the global mapping sits at nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. New York associate mandate telemetry records 33 closed searches over three years, 93 percent completed, a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, a 37 percent counter-offer incidence, and a median 11 working days from offer to acceptance.

Of those 33 closed files, 11 were company-side seats that specified Cooley-trained or Cooley-adjacent emerging-companies, capital-markets or life-sciences partnering experience. The same four files that ran past twelve weeks still required a retained outside-counsel overlay after the hire, because the in-house desk could not absorb the financing volume the company had hired the lawyer to bring in. The search closed. The work did not move in. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: a completed mandate is not the same as a filled operational gap, and a company that hires one Cooley-trained associate against a book Cooley staffs with a team will still be on the panel in quarter two.

Across the same interview cohort, 71 of 142 New York associates sitting inside Am Law 100 technology and life-sciences practices over an 18-month window named the unpublished bonus as the number they would not discuss with an in-house counterparty. That is also what the public record shows. A head of legal at a listed life-sciences issuer told us that matching Cooley cash without matching Cooley hours made the in-house offer read as a pay cut even when total cash was close. Fifty-two of 88 New York general counsel at venture-backed technology companies — a cut of the 218 in-house hiring managers in the same New York interview cohort, over a 24-month window — said they were increasing outside-counsel spend on emerging-companies work in the same year they opened an in-house associate requisition.

BriefStart date

  1. Price the public cell The FAQ summer rate, or the Legal Cheek NQ, copied into a requisition. Commercial, visible, and the wrong first move if the license is still open.
  2. Name the license New York or California practice for a US desk; SQE and reserved-work rules for a London desk. A Bishopsgate NQ and a Hudson Yards class-year are not substitutes.
  3. Decide what work actually moves in If the financing volume still needs a Cooley team after the hire, the company is buying a coordinator, not a replacement. Budget the panel and the seat as two lines.

Nine of the 33 closed New York associate searches asked Sartori, in the brief, to “match Cooley.” Those nine were priced to the 2025 summer FAQ cell, because that is the public US number. Two of those nine reopened when the candidate produced a higher internal class-year figure that could not be verified against a published 2026 grid. The public record is incomplete, and so is any search that pretends otherwise. A company that needs this seat filled should decide three things before a shortlist is circulated: which license the work requires, which office the lawyer will sit in, and which of the two public cells — if either — the compensation committee will actually approve. The rest is a retained in-house search, not a spreadsheet of someone else’s FAQ.

Associates weighing the other side of the same number, and the retention question the London NQ cell does not answer, will find that argument on the sibling page why NQ salary tables attract but do not retain. This page stops at Cooley’s public cells, who earns them, and why a general counsel still cannot fill the tech-associate seat by copying either one.

The FAQ is a cell. It is not an offer.
On the incomplete public record

Cooley salary 2026: common questions

What is the Cooley nq salary in 2026?

The public London cell is £157,000, published by Legal Cheek on 29 September 2025 and corroborated by The Legal 500 Future Lawyers table. That figure is a newly qualified solicitor salary after two years of qualifying work experience, not a US first-year lockstep. Cooley does not print the NQ number on its own UK Trainee FAQs; the firm-posted London cash cells on that page are the trainee rates of £55,000 and £60,000.

What is Cooley associate salary for a US first-year in 2026?

The only Cooley-posted US cash cell as of September 2026 is the $225,000 annualized rate for the 2025 summer associate program, still live on the Law Student FAQ. A Cooley-issued 2026 class-year grid at the post-June $235,000 floor is not on cooley.com and is not on Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard. Treat the $225,000 FAQ cell as the public US number, not as a confirmed 2026 first-year scale.

Did Cooley match the 2026 Milbank $235,000 scale?

Not on the public record. Above the Law's 2026 raise scorecard, started 5 June 2026 and updated through 31 August 2026, lists Milbank as first mover on 2 June 2026 and subsequent matches; Cooley does not appear. Absence is not proof the firm did not match internally. It is proof a company cannot budget to a Cooley $235,000 cell from a dated public memo.

What do Cooley partners earn in 2026?

The public figure is FY2025 profit per equity partner of about $4.6 million, up 18.3 percent, as reported by Global Legal Post on 16 March 2026. Cooley describes a single-tier global partnership of 375 to 400-plus partners. Individual draws, points and origination splits are not public. PEP is an average, not a lockstep partner salary.

Can a general counsel fill a Cooley-trained tech-associate seat by matching the posted cell?

Usually no. The Association of Corporate Counsel's 2025 survey of 772 chief legal officers found understaffing the biggest barrier, 43 percent planning to send more work to law firms, and 41 percent of law departments under a cost-cutting mandate. A London NQ on the £157,000 cell cannot sit a New York desk without US admission; a US class-year associate cannot do reserved solicitor work in London without the SQE route. Peer firms can pay a market cell and keep the lawyer on the same deal tape. The company often buys the lawyer as outside counsel instead.

How long does Sartori take to fill a New York associate seat of this kind?

Typical timeline is 6 to 12 weeks on the New York associate desk, with a 93 percent completion rate across 33 closed searches over three years and a median 11 working days from offer to signature. Company-side briefs that mix a London NQ cell with a US-barred class-year candidate run past that window. Decide the license, the office and the cash cell before the shortlist, not after.

Firm-posted cash cells, Legal Cheek and Legal 500 London NQ compilation, NALP 2025 medians, ACC 2025 CLO survey, Cooley FY2025 press, Q2 2026 venture report, NVCA/PitchBook and Renaissance Capital market tape. A 2026 Cooley US class-year grid and a Cooley bonus dollar were not on the pages and are not used.

Compensation figures are general information, not financial, career or legal advice. Cooley’s live US FAQ cell is a 2025 summer rate; the London NQ cell is a 29 September 2025 compilation. Actual pay varies by office, class year, hours, bonus eligibility and currency. Mandate counts are New York associate-line telemetry over three years. Interview findings are cohort reads from the New York structured-interview program, not a census of Cooley’s payroll.
