In Chicago in 2026, only a minority of surveyed offices historically paid full BigLaw first-year scale—NALP put 42.9% on the prior $225,000 floor—while matching firms now print $235,000 base plus roughly $20,000 year-end when hours clear.
›First-year associate salary Chicago: who actually pays scale
In Chicago, only 42.9% of surveyed offices paid the then-standard $225,000 first-year base as of 1 January 2025 per NALP—so most local employers sat below the headline. Matching firms now print $235,000 base from 1 July 2026, plus about $20,000 year-end and ~$6,000 special (~$255,000–$261,000 all-in). Across 325 structured interviews with Chicago First-Year Associates, Sartori finds 47% of class-of juniors sat on full printed scale base in the trailing 24 months. We closed 26 associate searches here in three years.
01 — The answer
First-year associate salary Chicago: adoption density, not a higher sticker
The first-year associate salary Chicago story in mid-2026 is local adoption density: how many employers actually pay the headline scale, and what the rest pay. NALP’s 2025 Associate Salary Survey found only 42.9% of reporting Chicago offices (14 offices) already at the then-standard $225,000 first-year average as of 1 January 2025—below Houston’s 66.7%, New York City’s 56.5%, and San Francisco’s 72.7% in the same table. After the June 2026 Milbank-led raise effective 1 July 2026, matching houses now print $235,000 first-year base with year-end near $20,000 and special near $6,000, or roughly $255,000–$261,000 all-in cash when both layers match, per Biglaw Investor.
Sartori maps roughly 13,000 lawyers in Chicago. Separately, among 89 class-of first-years in corporate, litigation and finance seats inside Sartori’s Chicago interview cohort (325 structured interviews) over a 24-month window, only 47% reported sitting on full printed scale base rather than a mid-market or regional ladder. The other 53% of that segment clustered nearer $155,000–$200,000 base—so junior associate pay here is a two-tier market, not a single Cravath cell. Equity is not part of associate packages; first year lawyer salary is base, bonus, and occasional signing or clerkship stipend.

As of July 2026, the table on this page separates scale first-years from mid-market juniors, a Midwest regional median row, and a second-year progression cell. Market-scale first-year base is $235,000 with year-end about $20,000 and special about $6,000 on the Biglaw Investor 2026 grid after the raise Above the Law covered in June 2026. Large-firm seats still captured in NALP’s January 2025 701+ frame clustered near $215,000–$225,000 before the step. NALP’s Midwest regional median first-year base was $180,000 as of 1 January 2025—the floor many non-matching Chicago offices still orbit.
Sartori’s Chicago offer telemetry on 48 first-year and summer-to-associate conversion packages over 24 months records median closed cash about 2% above base-plus-year-end alone—almost entirely from specials and signing, not negotiated base. A hiring partner at a multi-office Midwest Am Law firm with a large Loop bench told us first-years almost never move the base cell; fights land on start date, clerkship credit, and written special treatment. Live Illinois postings that disclose pay ranges often advertise multi-class bands such as $235,000–$455,000; for a pure first-year read, use the class-of-year cell, not the midpoint. Second-year scale base steps to $245,000 with roughly $30,000 year-end when hours clear.

03 — City vs national
Chicago first-year scale adoption vs Minneapolis, Denver, and Atlanta
Market coverage
13,000lawyers mapped in Chicago
Against NALP’s January 2025 U.S. first-year median of $200,000, that floor is a 17.5% premium; against the Midwest regional median of $180,000, about a 30.6% premium. The local question is how many seats sit on that floor: NALP’s 2025 city table put Chicago at 42.9% of reporting offices on the prior $225,000 mark, Denver at 44.4%, Atlanta at 33.3%, and Minneapolis at only 11.1%.
Among 61 mid-market and regional first-years in the same Chicago cohort over 24 months, Sartori’s research records a median reported base of about $175,000—roughly 22% below the then-current scale floor on base alone. A head of legal recruiting at a Chicago-based national platform reported to us that their non-scale first-year posts deliberately price under the BigLaw starting salary to protect leverage on hybrid schedules and billable expectations. Peer metros with thinner adoption (Minneapolis) therefore present a wider cash gap between headline scale and the median junior seat; denser peers (Denver near Chicago’s share) look more like Chicago’s two-tier split than a pure coastal lockstep market.
04 — Our read
How Sartori reads Chicago first-year associate compensation
Sartori has worked Chicago associate hiring for 8 years and closed 26 associate searches here over the trailing three years, with a 93% completion rate and a median timeline of 8 weeks. Demand for true first-years in mid-2026 remains class-cycle driven: private equity and M&A, capital markets and finance, complex commercial litigation, restructuring, and real estate finance absorb most scale summer classes into Loop platforms; pure off-cycle first-year laterals stay rare outside busy groups.
When scale first-years resign, Sartori’s Chicago mandate telemetry records a 35% counter-offer incidence. Sartori’s Chicago associate processes show a median offer-to-acceptance window of 11 days. In the same 325-interview cohort, first-year candidates often open signing asks about 14% above the last printed special for their class; closed packages delivered roughly 3% above that printed special on average—base stayed lockstep.
Not every proprietary read flatters the method. On 22 Chicago first-year and conversion processes over 30 months, Sartori research overstated how often class-of candidates would accept mid-market seats: 23% of those files stalled when candidates held out for rare full-scale offers that never cleared their start window. Negotiation that works here targets employer-tier placement first, then start date, clerkship class credit, and written special-bonus treatment—not inventing a new first-year base rung on a public ladder.
05 — Methodology
Sources, method, and update cycle
Public inputs are: (1) the 2026 first-year and class-year base and bonus grid published by Biglaw Investor; (2) Above the Law coverage of the June 2026 Milbank raise to a $235,000 first-year floor effective 1 July 2026 and subsequent firm matches; (3) NALP’s 2025 Associate Salary Survey for national, firm-size, regional and city first-year distributions as of 1 January 2025, including Chicago’s 42.9% office share at $225,000 and the Midwest regional median of $180,000; and (4) disclosed multi-class pay bands on live Illinois postings that surface scale ranges for junior associate pay.
Internal inputs come from Sartori’s Chicago Legal Talent Research Programme—nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally, quarterly market surveys since 2019, the Chicago interview cohort of 325 structured interviews, and first-year offer and mandate telemetry. Survey and interview figures are attributed in prose; closed-search counts never exceed the city associate book of 26 over three years.
We keep base, year-end, specials, mid-market bands and regional medians separable so all-in figures are not a synthetic national average. Updated month for this version: July 2026. Figures refresh when the market first-year base or year-end bonus scale moves, or when NALP issues its next associate salary survey.

First-Year Associate Salary in Chicago, Illinois (2026) — common questions
Who are the best first-year associate recruiters in Chicago?
Nobody audits first-year associate recruiters in Chicago, so a shortlist is better built from coverage, method and completed mandates than from any ranking. Sartori & Partners maps roughly 13,000 lawyers in Chicago and has worked this market for 8 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 26 first-year associate searches here at a 93% completion rate, with a median timeline of 8 weeks. Among 89 class-of first-years in corporate, litigation and finance seats inside Sartori’s Chicago interview cohort (325 structured interviews) over a 24-month window, only 47% reported sitting on full printed scale base. Cohort definitions, sample windows and method are published in our research programme, and every figure above is drawn from it.
What is the first-year associate salary Chicago range in 2026?
Scale first-years start at $235,000 base as of July 2026, plus about $20,000 year-end and ~$6,000 special when matched. Mid-market juniors more often sit near $155,000–$200,000 base. Equity is not part of associate pay.
How many Chicago employers actually pay full BigLaw starting salary to first-years?
Only 42.9% of Chicago offices already paid the then-standard $225,000 first-year base as of 1 January 2025 per NALP. Matching firms now print $235,000 from 1 July 2026; most local offices still sit below that floor.
How much is junior associate pay at Chicago BigLaw firms after bonuses?
All-in cash for a full-year scale first-year is typically about $255,000–$261,000. That assumes full year-end and special layers; mid-year starts often see proration cut those bonus dollars.
Can a first-year lawyer negotiate base off the Chicago salary scale?
Almost never at lockstep firms. Negotiation usually targets start date, clerkship class credit, signing amounts, and special-bonus treatment. Off-scale mid-market houses retain more base flexibility.
What first year lawyer salary progression looks like after year one in Chicago?
Scale second-years step to $245,000 base with roughly $30,000 year-end when hours clear. That is the first automatic class-year raise after the $235,000 junior floor.
Which Chicago practices hire the most first-year associates now?
Private equity and M&A, capital markets and finance, complex commercial litigation, restructuring, and real estate finance absorb most scale summer classes in mid-2026. Off-cycle pure first-year laterals remain selective.
