Companies that brief grocery counsel recruiters Chicago typically want that in-sector deputy, not a first-time grocer from a downtown commercial practice. One general counsel at a regional supermarket operator told us that every recent legal hire had already sat inside a discounter or wholesaler.
ALDI U.S., based in Batavia, said on 12 January 2026 it will open more than 180 stores toward 3,200 by 2028 and invest $9 billion through 2028, including three new distribution centers. It filled the U.S. general counsel seat in April 2026. Discount grocers need in-house counsel for site, supply, labor, and private-label work at that pace.
Nine of 11 grocery in-house offers we closed stayed inside the sector. Jewel-Osco listed 188 stores as of 2026; Roundy's operated 40 Mariano's in Chicagoland the same year. Those conventional-banner legal teams, with discounter teams in Aurora and wholesale teams in Naperville, are the flow.
