02 The dated table

The Freshfields nq salary cell, in sterling and dollars.

Three published sterling bases sit on the firm's own trainee page and on Legal Cheek's 2026 card. The dollar column is a Bank of England identity, not a Freshfields list. Everything else a lockstep fantasy grid would fill is a blank.

Freshfields LLP employs the London trainee, newly qualified associate and lockstep associate. Freshfields US LLP employs the Boston, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Raleigh lawyer. The UK Trainee Associate Programme page, accessed 11 September 2026, publishes Year 1 at £56,000 and Year 2 at £61,000 and labels the next grade Newly Qualified Associate. Legal Cheek’s 2026 firm profile, carrying the Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey 2026–27, lists newly qualified salary at £150,000 against the same trainee pair. That is the cell.

Legal Cheek reported on 3 May 2024 that the firm confirmed NQ salaries increased from £125,000 to £150,000 on 1 May 2024 — an uplift of £25,000, or 20 percent. Trainee Year 1 moved from £50,000 to £56,000; Year 2 from £55,000 to £61,000. Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 table then restated the Magic Circle, including this firm, still at £150,000. The 2026 profile did not move the cell. A general counsel pricing 2026 cash is reading a 2024 raise that the rest of US-London NQ pay ran past.

Public 2026 Freshfields cash by seat. London bases are the firm trainee page accessed 11 September 2026 and Legal Cheek’s 2026 profile. The dollar NQ print is the Bank of England spot of 10 September 2026 applied to that sterling cell. US market first-year base is Milbank’s, not this firm’s. Blank cells are not public.

The Bank of England daily spot against sterling, most recent rate on the page, was £1 = US$1.3531 on 10 September 2026, with a 52-week high of $1.3790 and a 52-week low of $1.3042. Arithmetic on the £150,000 cell: $202,965 at the spot; $206,850 to $195,630 across that 52-week band. The Bank of England states on the same page that these are not official rates and are no more authoritative than a London commercial-bank quote. They are, however, dated. A board pack that says “about $1.50” is not.

03 The blanks

Scale, bonus and 2026 PEP are not a second table.

The cell is the only public associate cash. A general counsel who fills the blanks with a US lockstep, a leaked PQE grid or a homemade PEP is writing a different firm.

Freshfields’ UK 2025 pay-gap report, published April 2026, states that associate pay is determined by a lockstep model in which tenure directly influences remuneration. Female associates were 57 percent of that cut, from 54 percent. Bonus calculations for the trainee-and-associate cut include associates only. The proportion of UK Service Company employees receiving a bonus in 2025 was 71.3 percent of women and 71.8 percent of men. Partners, the same report says, do not have a bonus plan equivalent to employees. That is evidence that a bonus machine exists for associates. It is not a cash grid.

The UK careers page headed “More than a career” describes milestone transition programs supporting legal career progression for senior associates and counsel. Legal Cheek’s 2026 profile lists 70 training contracts, latest trainee retention of 68 percent, annual leave of 26 days, and “no targets” for annual hours, with an average start of 09:26 and finish of 21:28 drawn from the Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey 2026–27 of over 2,000 trainees and junior associates at leading UK firms. Hours without a published target do not become a bonus formula on this page.

RollOnFriday, on 15 November 2024, published a leaked associate reward grid it said the firm declined to verify. That leak is not a 2026 Freshfields scale. Its rungs are omitted here. A general counsel who pastes a 2024 gossip-site grid into a 2026 requisition is not matching this firm. They are matching a document the employer would not stand behind.

On the US associate seat the gap is cleaner. Above the Law, on 5 June 2026, recorded Milbank moving first-year and class-of-2026–2025 base to $235,000 and class of 2018 to $455,000 on 2 June 2026, presumed effective 1 July 2026. The RAISES table on that scorecard lists matching firms. Freshfields is not among them. The firm’s US experienced-lawyer page says pay will be competitive with the very top of the market and prints no dollar figure. The ABA Journal, on 19 November 2025, reprinted Cravath’s 18 November 2025 year-end bonus ladder and Cravath’s 2026 bases still at the prior $225,000 first-year ladder. None of those memos is a Freshfields class-year scale.

Partner economics after the NQ cell are a residual, not a 2026 paycheck the firm will confirm. The Law Gazette, on 12 December 2025, reading accounts for the year ended 30 April 2025, put income at £2.25 billion, pre-tax surplus at £656.8 million, and profit for discretionary division among 296 LLP members at £648 million. Staff were paid £1,206 million. Average people employed were 5,945, including 3,901 fee-earners. Companies House shows Freshfields LLP (OC334789) last accounts made up to 30 April 2025, next due by 31 January 2027. Do not divide £648 million by 296 and call the result PEP. The Gazette does not.

The firm stopped voluntary trading-performance disclosure in July 2023. The Irish Times, carrying Financial Times reporting on 13 July 2026, put last voluntary PEP at £2.09 million in 2023 and cited Law.com rankings putting estimated PEP at $2.9 million in 2024. Wikipedia’s reprint of ALM’s 2025 Global 100, retrieved 27 September 2025, lists Freshfields profit per partner at $2,932,000 on revenue of $2,981,807,000 and 2,631 lawyers. Band global lawyers as about 2,600 to 2,800 depending on source year: the firm’s own About page, labeled FY 23/24, states 5,700 people and 2,800 lawyers across 33 offices. Those are different years and different “lawyer” definitions from the Gazette’s 3,901 fee-earners. Do not blend them into one headcount.

Bloomberg Law, on 27 March 2026, recorded the global managing partner on the record confirming the partner-pay system was updated for the first time since 2017, and that the firm is adding a non-equity partner tier paid largely by salary rather than profit share. That on-record confirmation is the 2026 partner-structure fact. Unnamed-source color in the same period — top US take, points, internal FX — is not a PEP series and is not used as one here.

04 Two readers

Who earns the cell, and who has to match it.

The associate earns the published base. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal is usually buying the same product skill on the other side of the deal — and that is where an undated conversion is paid twice.

In that same London interview cohort, 88 of 130 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at London corporates, banks and private-capital sponsors, over a 24-month window, told Sartori they had written the dated London newly qualified cell as the first number on a requisition — then asked for the dollar equivalent without naming a spot date. That is the company-side error this page is for.

A chief legal officer at a FTSE-scale industrial company, in that same cohort, said the board pack had converted the cell “at about one-fifty from a board pack.” The 10 September 2026 Bank of England print was $1.3531. The gap is not rounding. It is an undated rate.

The associate and the partner are paid by the firm, on a public sterling cell and an unpublished residual, not by the company that later tries to hire them.

  • London juniors sit on an eight-seat, two-year Trainee Associate Programme open to any degree discipline, then qualify as Newly Qualified Associate. Legal Cheek lists 70 training contracts and 68 percent latest retention. Vacation-scheme applications for 2027 ran 1 September to 30 October 2026.
  • US associates sit in Boston, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Raleigh. The US careers hub states +500 lawyers, +900 people, six offices. Summer associates take a ten-week program; New York, Boston and SV-SF offers go into Global Transactions or Dispute Resolution, Washington DC into Dispute Resolution or Antitrust, Competition and Trade.
  • Partners read a residual. Last voluntary PEP was £2.09 million in 2023. The 2026 on-record fact is a non-equity tier and a points reset. Average PEP is not a personal drawing, and it is not an in-house offer.

The company-side matcher is buying a transactions, disputes or competition skill, not a Magic Circle brand, and often with a stable headcount budget.

  • Listed corporates and sponsors buy Global Transactions and merger-control time. The firm’s merger-control page describes CMA and UK-government clearance of a UK mobile-network combination, a $34 billion agribusiness combination cleared in 40+ jurisdictions, and a $14 billion tech-networking acquisition. The general counsel on those files is the buyer of the NQ, not the NQ’s employer.
  • Banks and energy networks later employ the alumni. Legal Business, on 30 April 2026, recorded a regulated UK gas-distribution company appointing as general counsel a lawyer whose path was a Freshfields antitrust, competition and trade associate, then in-house roles at a UK telecoms group and a FTSE 100 bank. Barclays, on 1 May 2026, appointed a Group General Counsel effective 1 July 2026 from a US elite-firm securities chair who had previously directed the SEC Division of Enforcement — a partner-level US match, not the London NQ cell.
  • Public-body hosts do not pay the cell. Legal Cheek names a large-cap UK life-sciences group and the Bank of England among client secondments, with the 2026–27 survey putting chance of a secondment abroad at 34 percent and a client secondment at 29 percent. The Competition and Markets Authority is the UK merger and digital-markets counterparty the Antitrust, Competition and Trade desk staffs against; its own General Counsel is a public-body legal seat, not this firm’s NQ grade.

Legal Cheek, on 29 September 2025, listed 18 US London offices above £170,000 and Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn and Paul Weiss at £180,000, against a Magic Circle still at £150,000 and an average NQ across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits of £118,756. Those US-London offices are competing buyers of the same newly qualified solicitor. They are not this firm’s payroll, and they are not an in-house grade. A head of legal who copies a £180,000 US-London NQ into a corporate offer is matching a different employer.

We converted it at about one-fifty from a board pack.

05 The product

The seat is a transactions or competition solicitor, not a generic hire.

Global Transactions took 30 of 47 partner titles effective 1 May 2026. A London NQ is an SQE solicitor whose two-year training contract is qualifying work experience. A US first-year is a different credential door.

Freshfields announced on 16 April 2026 that 43 new partners would take title on 1 May 2026, plus four recently promoted, 47 in total. Global Legal Post the same day counted all five practice groups: 30 Global Transactions, up from nine in 2025; five Dispute Resolution; five Antitrust, Competition and Trade; four Tax; three People and Reward. Geography: continental Europe 17, United States 13, London 11. Around half of those promoted were women, the sixth consecutive year above a previously stated 40 percent women-partner target. That mix is a hiring-capacity signal. It is not NQ headcount, and it is not a reason to treat every qualifying trainee as a Global Transactions seat.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority SQE training-options page, updated 28 January 2026, requires a degree or equivalent, a pass in SQE1 then SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and character and suitability. The SRA qualifying-work-experience page, updated 26 January 2024, states that QWE is real-life legal services under Legal Services Act 2007 s.12, at a law firm, an in-house legal team or another legal-services provider, in up to four organizations, confirmed by an England-and-Wales solicitor or COLP; a training contract counts. Freshfields does not waive those gates. The City Consortium, with BPP Law School over 11 months at Holborn, is the shared SQE factory: BPP, on 3 December 2019, listed six member firms including this one. Legal Cheek’s 2026 money block lists a PGDL grant of £12,500 and an SQE grant of £20,000.

US first-years gate through an ABA-approved J.D. under New York Court of Appeals Part 520.3 — 83 credits, 64 classroom, two professional-responsibility credits — and, for New York practice, Court of Appeals Part 520 bar eligibility, as the New York State Board of Law Examiners eligibility page sets out. Foreign-educated lawyers use 520.6. A London NQ solicitor is not that door. A J.D. is not the London newly qualified seat.

Credential gates on the two employing entities. London figures follow the Solicitors Regulation Authority SQE route and the firm’s trainee page. US figures follow New York Court of Appeals Part 520 and the firm’s US law-student page.

Manchester is not this cell. Legal Cheek notes London trainees send first-level document review to a Manchester hub, and that the firm recently trimmed paralegal headcount there. The UK pay-gap report covers Freshfields Service Company employees in London and Manchester. The £150,000 NQ grade is London (and the US offices on a different, unpublished ledger).

06 Why the cell costs this

Statute and the M&A cycle price the desks that hire the NQ.

The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, NSIA screening volumes, and a $3.16 trillion first half of global M&A are the 2026 demand stack. They price Antitrust, Competition and Trade and Global Transactions mid-levels first, not a larger trainee class.

Partner promotions effective 1 May 2026, by practice group, from the firm's 16 April 2026 announcement as counted by Global Legal Post the same day. Global Transactions took 30 titles, up from nine in 2025.

Freshfields, 16 April 2026; Global Legal Post, 16 April 2026.

The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 brought Parts 1 and 2 into force on 1 January 2025 under the Commencement No. 1 Regulations 2024. The Competition and Markets Authority, on 7 January 2025, said the regime was live, with strategic-market-status investigations to be completed within a statutory nine months. Freshfields’ client note of 2 December 2024 restated the new acquirer test: one party with UK turnover above £350 million and a 33 percent supply share, even if the target has no UK turnover, and a target-turnover threshold of £100 million, up from £70 million. The general counsel who now trips those tests is budgeting Antitrust, Competition and Trade associates on deals that previously stayed outside the net.

Google search was designated with strategic market status on 10 October 2025, after an investigation opened 14 January 2025; conduct-requirement consultations ran into June 2026. Apple’s mobile platform designation period runs from 23 October 2025 to 22 October 2030. Microsoft’s business-software ecosystem became the fourth SMS investigation, launched 14 May 2026, with a statutory decision-notice deadline of 13 February 2027; the CMA noted more than 15 million commercial users in the UK ecosystem. Those clocks staff ACT partners who appear before the Digital Markets Board Committee and associates who answer information notices. They do not, by themselves, enlarge the 70-contract trainee intake.

The Cabinet Office National Security and Investment Act 2021 annual report for 2025–26, published 14 July 2026, recorded 1,324 notifications, up 16 percent from 1,143; 95.6 percent cleared with no further action; 4.4 percent (54) called in; 60 call-in notices in total; nine final orders. The defense sector accounted for 47 percent of called-in acquisitions. Every sensitive-sector Global Transactions NQ now files a mandatory notice as process, not as a specialty. The 4.4 percent that are called in is the ACT and FDI overlay.

ION Analytics / Mergermarket, on 8 July 2026, put global announced M&A at USD 3.16 trillion in the first half of 2026, up 44 percent year on year. Private-equity-related volumes were USD 745 billion, only up 2 percent year on year and down 34 percent from the second half of 2025. Freshfields, on 13 July 2026, said almost two-thirds of the firm’s global M&A deal value in the first half involved a US component, with Mergermarket ranking the firm first globally for cross-border M&A. ION, on 9 January 2026, had already given the firm Europe gold at USD 314 billion for FY2025; the 8 July 2026 cut put Europe gold at USD 203.3 billion in the first half, almost twice the prior-year first half. That volume prices Global Transactions NQs and mid-levels in London and New York. The PE lag argues against a private-capital-only NQ binge.

Competitive structure moved under the cell. A&O Shearman completed on 1 May 2024 with nearly 4,000 lawyers, about 800 partners and about $3.5 billion combined revenue, the firm’s own announcement that day. Reuters, on 2 June 2025, recorded Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin combining as Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, 2,700 lawyers, over $2 billion revenue. The same Reuters piece noted this firm had grown in the US by hiring, not merger. Boston opened on 24 February 2025 as then the fourth US office. US income of £473 million in FY2025, from £391 million, is the P&L expression of that build — about 21 percent of £2.25 billion, as Bloomberg Law restated on 27 March 2026.

Technology reallocated junior hours without creating NQ titles. Freshfields, on 23 April 2026, announced a multi-year Anthropic agreement, with Claude already available to 5,700 employees, adoption up about 500 percent in six weeks, firmwide across 33 offices, and co-development of agentic workflows for research, contract review, drafting and due diligence. Legal Cheek already had the Manchester hub taking first-level review. The CMA Microsoft SMS clock and the DMCC SMS regime increase Antitrust, Competition and Trade demand on the same AI stack the firm is deploying internally. That is a junior-hours shock and an AI-governance overlay. It is not a published cut to the £150,000 cell.

Geographic income for the year ended 30 April 2025, as the Law Gazette reported on 12 December 2025. Europe remains the wage-bill core. US income is the growth sleeve that funds the transatlantic competitor set around the NQ cell.

Law Gazette, 12 December 2025, from accounts for the year ended 30 April 2025.

The Law Gazette’s FY2025 read is the wage-bill fact a general counsel should hold next to the NQ cell: staff cost £1,206 million, up £105 million, while pre-tax surplus slipped to £656.8 million on £2.25 billion of income. The May 2024 NQ raise sits inside that wage bill. Partner-point cuts and the new non-equity tier are the residual adjustment. The NQ cell is a known unit cost. It is not the partnership’s residual claim.

Freshfields’ transactions blog, on 4 September 2026, described the CMA’s revised Merger Assessment Guidelines after a 2026 Merger Efficiencies Review. The statutory substantial-lessening-of-competition test is unchanged; the efficiencies chapter expanded, with an early-engagement warning that Phase 2-late efficiency claims will stand limited chance of success. Mid-PQE ACT and Global Transactions associates who assemble operational and financial evidence in Phase 1 are the seat that guideline prices. A newly qualified generalist is not.

07 The mandate

We have closed the London associate searches. Undated conversions reopen them.

Sartori & Partners has worked the London associate market for more than 10 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches, with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. The files that converted the NQ cell without a dated rate ran past that window.

Of those 33 closed London associate searches, 19 were firm-side laterals — Magic Circle London or US-office associate desks — and 14 were company-side, matching a transactions, disputes or competition lawyer onto a corporate, bank or energy-network payroll. Of the 19 firm-side files, 12 were Global Transactions, competition or disputes seats. Of the 14 company-side files, 8 sat in in-house competition, M&A or financial-regulatory counsel roles at banks, energy networks or listed corporates.

Eleven of the 33 were re-specified after the first offer pack: six because the sterling cell had been converted at an undated rate, five because the brief had treated £150,000 as all-in cash against an unpublished bonus. Those 11 ran past the typical 6-to-12-week window. That is the finding that does not flatter us: the miss is often already in the brief we are handed, and we still take too long to put a dated Bank of England print on the conversion. Counter-offer incidence on the same London associate line is 35 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days when the cell is clean.

Six of the 14 company-side searches required a credential rewrite after the first specification — an SQE solicitor written against a New York-bar seat, or a US class year written against a London training-contract NQ. In the same interview cohort, 44 of 85 Magic Circle newly qualified solicitors and junior associates said a company interview had asked them to map post-qualification years onto a US class year. PQE is not class year. The mapping is the tell.

A general counsel at a regulated UK energy network, in that same cohort, said the first in-house competition-counsel offer had been written at the NQ cell “as if it included the bonus.” The April 2026 pay-gap report confirms a bonus machine. It does not print the pounds. Treating the published base as all-in is how a company-side search starts twice.

Two anonymized composites, presented as Sartori engagements, show the pattern without naming a client.

A FTSE-scale bank legal department asked for “a Freshfields NQ” to sit as in-house competition counsel beside a global head of legal. The brief priced the seat at £150,000 all-in. The careers page and the Legal Cheek 2026 card publish that figure as base only. The pay-gap report confirms associate bonuses exist and does not print the cash. We closed a rewritten in-house competition-counsel search in 10 weeks after the bonus blank was put on the page and the credential was written as an SQE solicitor with CMA-facing matter experience, not as a US class year. The first specification was not a search. It was a cell with an invented residual.

A listed industrials company converted the London NQ cell at “about $1.50” from a board pack and compared the result to the Milbank first-year base of $235,000 effective 1 July 2026. The Bank of England print on 10 September 2026 was $1.3531. Freshfields is not on the Above the Law match table. We split the requisition into a London mid-PQE transactions solicitor and a US-bar corporate counsel, and filled the company seat on the second specification. Time-to-fill on the second run sat inside the 6-to-12-week band. The first specification had already consumed the opening weeks of the clock.

We cannot price London all-in cash for a general counsel who asks. The bonus grid is not public, and our mandate telemetry does not invent one. That blank is a fact about the market, not a gap we fill with a round number. If you need a private read on a specific offer — London NQ, in-house match, or a US seat this firm has not priced in public — that conversation is the product. The associate recruiting desk and the in-house and general counsel desk are the two doors; pick the payroll the hire will actually sit on.

Quarterly surveys have run since 2019 across the global research program, which maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. The London findings on this page come from the interview cohort and the 33-file telemetry. For the US market ladder a New York hire is priced against, see the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale — and do not paste it onto this firm unless this firm publishes a match.

08 The record

Careers pages, Legal Cheek, Bank of England spots, and the FY2025 accounts.

London cash is the trainee page and the Legal Cheek 2026 card. The dollar column is a dated Bank of England identity. Partner structure is the on-record non-equity confirmation. 2026 PEP, PQE rungs and US class-year bases are not on this list because they are not public.
