Interim general counsel day rate in 2026

Two readers, one invoice. The counsel is pricing a day of work. The company is pricing a gap. The table is the 2026 card for the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Gulf.

The 2026 interim general counsel day-rate table.

Bands are what we invoice in 2026. Medians are interim general counsel engagements only, closed from October 2024 through September 2026, inside the 60+ interim and fractional book since 2017.

Sortable. Every rate is a 2026 figure. Interim rows are full-time cover for a defined gap. Fractional rows are a different cadence, two or three days a week, or a first general counsel at a company under $100 million of revenue. Medians cover interim general counsel engagements only. The Gulf invoices in US dollars on the US interim band. There is no separate dirham card.

Interim general counsel, invoiced in USD Gulf (UAE and Saudi Arabia) $1,800–$3,200 in 2026 $3,050
Fractional GC, 2–3 days a week United States $2,800–$4,500 in 2026 Not this book

Interim and fractional are separate products. A fractional general counsel at two or three days a week is priced above the interim band because the counsel carries more than one client and the company is not buying the week. The practice sits on interim general counsel and fractional general counsel. A worked interim file: a Series C fintech in San Francisco, live on day 6.

02 The unit

A day rate buys a day. It does not buy a year.

Counsel and company are reading the same number for different objects. Name the object before you argue the price.

A few days a weekOfficer of the company

  1. Fractional Two or three days a week, often across more than one company. The day rate sits above interim cover because the week is not for sale.
  2. Interim Full-time cover for a dated gap: leave, a financing, a vacancy, an investigation. The assignment ends. The rate does not become a salary.
  3. Permanent Base, bonus, equity, benefits, notice. A different product, on a different clock, with a retained fee if a search is briefed.
Day worked The only unit on the invoice
≠
Paid leave Not in the rate
≠
Bonus or equity Not in the rate
≠
Employment A different contract

An interim general counsel day rate in 2026 is the professional fee for one day on the matter. In the United States it is not W-2 wages and it does not fund an employer benefit plan. In the United Kingdom it is the invoiced rate before anyone decides whether the engagement falls inside the off-payroll working rules. In the Gulf it does not include housing, schooling, flights, or end-of-service gratuity.

The permanent general counsel package is a different object. Stage bands for that seat, base and bonus and equity, are on the 2026 general counsel salary guide. This page does not restate them. It converts two public cash figures into a working day so a day rate has something honest to sit next to.

A day rate prices a day worked. It does not price a year of employment.

03 The comparison year

Put permanent cash on the same day as the invoice.

The 230-day year is a comparison device. It is 2026's weekdays, minus the federal holidays, minus a leave assumption we state in the same sentence.

US Bureau of Labor Statistics, ECEC, June 2026

2026 has 261 weekdays. It is not a leap year, and 1 January is a Thursday, so Thursday occurs 53 times and every other weekday 52 times. The Office of Personnel Management lists 11 federal holidays in 2026, and each of them falls on a weekday, including Friday 3 July for Independence Day. That leaves 250 weekdays. We subtract 20 days of paid leave, which is our comparison assumption and not a statutory entitlement. 261 minus 11 minus 20 is 230. The same 230 is used for the United Kingdom and the Gulf so the three markets share a denominator. It is not a UK or Gulf statutory year.

The Association of Corporate Counsel and Empsight, in the 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, report median total cash of $410,000 for the general counsel and chief legal officer grouping, on 1,632 US respondents, with compensation effective 1 March 2025. Total cash is base plus annual bonus, including respondents who received no bonus. Divided by 230, that is $1,783 a working day of total cash. Median base on the same row is $330,000, which is $1,435 a working day. Median total target direct compensation, which adds target bonus and target long-term incentive, is $503,000, which is $2,187 a working day. Medians do not add. Do not subtract base from total cash and call the difference “the bonus.”

Benefits sit on top of wages for a permanent employee and do not sit on a day rate. In June 2026 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported employer costs for private-industry management, professional, and related workers of $78.88 an hour, of which wages and salaries were $54.06 (68.5 percent) and benefits were $24.82 (31.5 percent). Using those published dollar costs, not the rounded percent, $24.82 divided by $54.06, times the $330,000 median base, is $151,509 of benefit cost. Added to the base, that is $481,509, or $2,094 across 230 days, before bonus and before equity. The benefit ratio is an economy-wide occupational average. It is not a GC plan. It is the right direction: the company that compares a day rate with base alone is leaving out a cost it already pays on the permanent seat.

One figure must not be turned into a day rate. Proxy statements show median total compensation of $4.76 million for 236 sitting general counsel who are named executive officers at the largest US-listed companies, 2026 proxy season. Divided by 230 that is $20,696 a day, and almost all of it is long-term equity that an interim does not receive and a mid-market company does not grant. It is a warning, not a benchmark. The filing read is general counsel pay at the largest US-listed companies.

04 Three markets

United States, United Kingdom, Gulf: same job, three invoices.

The counsel asks what a day is worth after the gaps. The company asks what a day costs against the permanent seat and against outside counsel.

United States. On interim general counsel engagements in the United States, the base is 9 of 18 interim general counsel engagements closed from October 2024 through September 2026, and the median day rate was $2,400. That median sits inside the 2026 band of $1,800–$3,200. It is not a new band. A company that anchors the opening proposal to $410,000 divided by 260 gets about $1,577, which is under the floor. The 230-day cash figure, $1,783, lands on the floor. The benefit-loaded base day, $2,094, lands inside the band.

United Kingdom. On interim general counsel engagements in the United Kingdom, the base is 6 of those 18, same window, and the median day rate was £1,850, inside the 2026 band of £1,400–£2,400. The public comparator is not another recruiter’s contractor table. It is the guideline hourly rate used to assess costs. From 1 January 2026, London 1 Grade A is £579 an hour. Eight hours, our notional solicitor day, is £4,632. The interim floor is 30 percent of that day and the ceiling is 52 percent, rounded to the nearest percent. An interim general counsel is not a City disputes partner, and the guideline is not a wage. The gap is still the point: cover for the company’s own matters is priced far under a recovered solicitor day for heavy commercial work.

Gulf. On interim general counsel engagements in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the base is 3 of those 18, same window, invoiced in US dollars, and the median was $3,050. At the Central Bank of the UAE rate of 3.6725 on 6 October 2026, that median is AED 11,201. The published band converts to AED 6,610.50–AED 11,752. The median sits at the high end because those three briefs were full-time cover, not a day a week, and the permanent DIFC base does not travel with the person. A DIFC general counsel base of $220,000–$380,000 is $957–$1,652 on the 230-day year, before housing, schooling, and end-of-service gratuity. PayScale’s UAE general counsel page, titled 2026 and updated 2 August 2025, shows an average base of AED 682,500 on 15 employee-reported profiles. The sample runs from AED 107,000 to AED 1,000,000, so the average is not a posted group-GC band. AED 682,500 divided by 3.6725 is $185,841, or $808 a comparison day, and AED 2,967 in dirhams. An interim at the dollar band is priced above that average for a reason the average does not capture: no gratuity, no housing, no schooling, and a term that ends.

United Kingdom, 2026: the interim general counsel band against eight hours at the London 1 Grade A guideline hourly rate of £579, in force 1 January 2026. The guideline is a costs figure. The band is an invoice.

Sartori & Partners UK interim band, 2026; HMCTS guideline hourly rates, 1 January 2026, times eight hours.

05 The person paid

What the counsel actually bills in a term.

The day rate is not annual pay. The term has a length, the year has gaps, and the invoice stops when the gap closes.

Across the 18 interim general counsel engagements closed from October 2024 through September 2026, the median term was 19 weeks and the median days billed were 95. A 19-week term at five billing days is 95 days. The two figures are the same fact. At the US median of $2,400, 95 days is $228,000 of gross fees for that one assignment. There is no employer pension in that figure, no paid holiday, and no second assignment assumed.

A counsel who prices the day rate against a permanent salary and ignores the space between assignments will over-read the year. The 230-day comparison year is a device for the company’s permanent seat. It is not a promise that an interim bills 230 days. Two median terms, back to back, would be 190 days. Most years are not back to back.

The San Francisco file is the shape, not a rate. A Series C fintech needed cover for parental leave and a financing. The interim general counsel was live on the work on day 6. The day rate on that file sat inside the $1,800–$3,200 band. We do not publish the invoice. The permanent salary context for that city is a different page.

“We thought we needed a full-time GC. They said fractional for two quarters, then a permanent search. Both were right. The fractional counsel started in a week.” That is a chief executive of a Series C payments company in San Francisco, on a fractional-then-permanent sequence. It is not the fintech leave file, and it is not a day-rate quote. It is the decision that belongs next to the rate: some gaps should never have been briefed as a permanent hire.

06 The company paying

Where companies mis-price the gap.

The expensive mistake is not the day rate. It is hiring a permanent general counsel for a gap that had a date, or running a day rate into a seat that needed a search.

Counsel reads
  • Days that will actually be billed
  • What the rate does not include
  • The gap after this term ends
  • Whether the brief is interim or fractional
Company reads
  • Loaded cost of the permanent seat
  • Outside-counsel day, if the work would have gone to a firm
  • Whether the gap has an end date
  • The credit if a retained search follows

Of the 18 interim general counsel engagements closed from October 2024 through September 2026, 7 opened with a company proposal 12 percent under the day rate that cleared. The anchor was a permanent salary divided by 260. The counsel did not take it. The company then met a rate inside the band, after a week it did not have.

Of those same 18, 4 ended before the briefed term. In 3 of those 4, the company hired a permanent counsel from its own directors’ network and stopped the invoice. That is a normal way for a defined gap to close. It is also the reason a day rate is not a retention product. We do not describe an interim engagement as if it carried the 12-month replacement term that attaches to a retained GC or CLO search.

When the gap becomes a seat, the clock changes. A retained general counsel or chief legal officer search takes 24 days to a shortlist and 11 weeks median to an accepted offer. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire’s total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid as a retainer at engagement. Days already billed on the interim are credited against the fee. The replacement term on that search is 12 months. Median start on the interim book remains 7 days from the first call, across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017. Use the short clock for cover. Use the long clock when the board is ready to hire.

Price the term you will bill. The band is the market. The letter is the deal.

What the counsel checks before accepting a 2026 day rate. No new figures.
Check Why it changes the rate
Full-time cover or two days a week Interim and fractional are different 2026 cards. Mixing them underprices the shared week or overprices the full one.
Days in the brief, and the end date Gross fees equal the rate times days billed. A 19-week median term is 95 days, not a year.
Who carries tax and insurance The US rate is a professional fee. The UK rate is invoiced before off-payroll status. Neither is employment.
What happens if a permanent search opens Days billed can be credited against a later retained fee. That credit belongs in the letter, not in a later argument.

Compare the invoice with the loaded permanent day and with outside counsel, not with base divided by 260.

Comparator 2026 reading
Permanent US total-cash day $1,783. Median total cash of $410,000, effective 1 March 2025, on 230 days. The interim floor is $1,800.
Permanent US base plus benefit ratio $2,094 a working day. Inside the $1,800–$3,200 interim band, and still before bonus and equity.
London 1 Grade A, eight hours £4,632 from 1 January 2026. The UK interim band is 30 to 52 percent of that costs day.
DIFC permanent base, per working day $957–$1,652, from a $220,000–$380,000 base. Housing, schooling, and gratuity are extra. The Gulf interim invoice is the dollar band.
If the gap becomes a seat 24 days to a shortlist, 11 weeks to an accepted offer, fee 25–30 percent, retainer 30 percent of the fee, days billed credited.

The 230-day year is arithmetic: 261 weekdays in 2026, minus 11 federal holidays listed by OPM, minus 20 days of leave we assume so that three markets share one denominator. Interim general counsel day rate: questions

What is an interim general counsel day rate in 2026?

In 2026 an interim general counsel day rate is $1,800-$3,200 in the United States and £1,400-£2,400 in the United Kingdom. Gulf mandates invoice in US dollars on the same $1,800-$3,200 band. The rate is the fee for a day worked. It is not salary, bonus, equity, pension, or paid leave. Across 18 interim general counsel engagements from October 2024 through September 2026, the medians were $2,400 in the United States on 9 mandates, £1,850 in the United Kingdom on 6, and $3,050 in the Gulf on 3.

How does a US interim day rate compare with permanent GC cash?

Median total cash for a US general counsel or chief legal officer was $410,000 in the ACC and Empsight 2025 survey, data effective 1 March 2025, on 1,632 respondents. On the 230-day comparison year used here, that is $1,783 a working day of total cash, before benefits and before equity. The 2026 interim band of $1,800-$3,200 starts at that cash-day and runs above it. Median base on the same survey is $330,000, or $1,435 a working day before the benefit load.

What is the UK interim general counsel day rate in 2026?

The 2026 UK interim general counsel day rate on our engagements is £1,400-£2,400. That is the invoiced rate, before off-payroll characterization. A London 1 Grade A solicitor's guideline hourly rate from 1 January 2026 is £579. Eight hours at that rate is £4,632, a costs figure for outside counsel, not an interim wage. £1,400 is 30 percent of £4,632 and £2,400 is 52 percent, rounded to the nearest percent.

What does a Gulf interim general counsel cost per day in 2026?

In 2026 a Gulf interim general counsel invoices in US dollars inside $1,800-$3,200. At the Central Bank of the UAE rate of 3.6725 on 6 October 2026, that band is AED 6,610.50 to AED 11,752. A permanent DIFC general counsel base of $220,000-$380,000 is $957-$1,652 a day on the same 230-day year, before housing, schooling, and end-of-service gratuity. PayScale's UAE general counsel average base was AED 682,500 on 15 profiles updated 2 August 2025, about $185,841, or $808 a comparison day.

Does the day rate include benefits, bonus, or equity?

No: in June 2026 benefits were 31.5 percent of employer cost for private-industry management and professional workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put wages at $54.06 and benefits at $24.82 of a $78.88 hourly total. Applied to the $330,000 median base, that wage-to-benefit ratio is $151,509 of benefit cost, and $2,094 a working day of base plus that load, before bonus and equity. The day rate does not carry it.

When should a company use an interim GC instead of a search?

Median start is 7 days from the first call, across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017, when the gap has a date: leave, a financing, a vacancy, an investigation. A retained GC or CLO search is a different clock: 24 days to a shortlist and 11 weeks median to an accepted offer, at 25-30 percent of first-year total compensation, with 30 percent of the fee as a retainer. Days already billed are credited against that later fee.
