Knowledge management lawyer and PSL salary in 2026
One page for the person paid and the company paying. London professional support lawyer bases and US knowledge-management counsel bases sit next to the official lawyer figures, which measure a different job.
The 2026 figures, in one table.
Accepted bases from closed searches first, then the public figures that measure a different job. The year sits in every figure.

May 2025 median annual wage for lawyers in the United States. Wage data exclude self-employed lawyers and owners or partners of unincorporated businesses. This is not a knowledge-management salary.
These buttons are published US lawyer and associate scales, not a knowledge-management salary or a PSL salary. The London and US knowledge-seat medians stay in the table above.
A UK PSL is not a US knowledge-management counsel.
Same family of work. Different title, different employer, different pay instrument, and no shared official statistic.
- National occupation wage Every employee solicitor or lawyer in the official series. Useful as a floor for the profession. Silent on knowledge roles.
- City lockstep The announced newly qualified base, or the associate class-year scale. A fee-earner ladder. The usual wrong anchor.
- Knowledge seat A qualified lawyer paid to maintain and teach the organisation’s knowledge. Precedent, training, and the firm’s or the department’s system. Not a personal billing target.
A professional support lawyer in a UK firm, often called a PSL or a knowledge lawyer, is a qualified solicitor whose work is the firm’s know-how: precedents, practice notes, training, and the quality of the advice other lawyers send out. A knowledge-management counsel in a US law firm, and a knowledge counsel inside a company, do the same family of work on the other side of the Atlantic. The company-side seat reports to a general counsel. It is not a second general counsel, and it is not a legal-operations hire. Legal operations pay sits on a different page, the legal operations salary guide for 2026.
- Title is PSL, knowledge lawyer, or professional support lawyer
- Employer is usually a law firm
- The misused anchor is the firm’s newly qualified salary
- The regulator counts solicitors, not this title
- Title is KM counsel or knowledge counsel
- Employer is a law firm, or a company with a report to the GC
- The misused anchor is associate class year, or the GC package
- No BLS occupation isolates the seat
At 31 October 2025 the Solicitors Regulation Authority regulated 176,972 practising solicitors and 8,928 firms, in its costs statement of 16 July 2026. Professional support lawyer is not a category in that count. A PSL sits inside that 176,972 and is not broken out. SOC 2412, “Solicitors and lawyers,” in the 2025 provisional Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, Table 14.7a, released 23 October 2025, covers full-time employee jobs in the United Kingdom. The median annual gross pay was £56,977. The 10th percentile was £29,279, the 25th was £42,015, the 75th was £77,509, and the 80th was £84,961. ONS suppressed the 90th percentile. ONS also warns that the published job count for the occupation is not a reliable headcount, so that count is omitted.
That £56,977 median sat £17,938 above the median for all full-time employee jobs, which was £39,039 in the same April 2025 provisional release. The gap describes the solicitor occupation against the wider labour market. It does not describe a City knowledge seat. The Law Society’s Financial Benchmarking Survey 2026, prepared by Hazlewoods and published on 15 April 2026, reported a median cost of a fee earner of £70,551, down from £70,867 in 2024, across 121 firms with combined fee income of more than £1.2 billion. That figure is a cost, mostly from smaller and mid-sized firms, and it is not a London PSL salary. Subtracting it from the ONS median mixes two instruments.
On the US side the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the Occupational Outlook Handbook page for lawyers last modified 27 August 2026, put the May 2025 median annual wage for lawyers at $159,670. The 10th percentile was less than $78,360 and the 90th was more than $351,600. Lawyers in the legal-services industry had a median of $157,870. Across legal occupations the median was $102,500, and across all occupations it was $50,980. About 863,700 lawyer jobs were counted in 2025. The wage series excludes self-employed lawyers and owners or partners of unincorporated businesses. Nothing in that release is a knowledge-management counsel.
| Dimension | UK PSL | US KM counsel |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Solicitor, usually several years after qualification | Lawyer, usually several years after the J.D. |
| Output | Precedents, training, know-how the fee-earners use | The firm’s or the department’s knowledge system |
| Who pays | The law firm, as a cost of production | The law firm, or a company’s legal department |
| Wrong comparator | The firm’s newly qualified base | An associate class year, or the general counsel package |
Firms that want the seat filled, rather than a pay theory, brief it as a knowledge search. The hiring page is knowledge management recruiting. General counsel pay, which is a different chair, is in the general counsel salary guide for 2026.
Where the knowledge seat sits against the published scales.
Five readings from the closed searches, then the public scales they should be set against. Each reading names the segment, the base, and the window.
- London law-firm PSL. Median accepted base £128,000 on 7 seats, inside 18 closed searches, from 1 January 2024 through 30 September 2026. Median post-qualification experience on those 7 was 9 years.
- Scope inside the London group. 3 seats whose written brief included training lawyers on the firm’s deployed AI tools had a median accepted base of £141,000. 4 seats whose brief stopped at precedents had a median of £118,000. Same window. The two subset medians do not have to average back to the £128,000 overall median.
- US law-firm knowledge-management counsel. Median accepted base $255,000 on 5 seats in the same 18, from 1 January 2024 through 30 September 2026. Median time since the J.D. was 8 years. 2 were paid inside the firm’s associate band for class years 4 to 6. 3 were on a separate counsel scale.
- Company-side knowledge counsel. Median accepted base $205,000 on 3 US seats reporting to a general counsel. 1 UK company-side seat, not a median, accepted at £145,000. 2 UK law-firm PSL seats outside London, also not a median, accepted at £92,000 and £100,000.
- Twelve-month retention, on the files old enough to read. 14 of the 18 had been filled by 30 September 2025, so a full year had elapsed by 30 September 2026. 12 of those 14 were still in seat on 30 September 2026. The other 4 were filled from October 2025 through September 2026 and sit in the placement count only.

Set the London median against the only City cash figure the market actually publishes. The Magic Circle London newly qualified base was £150,000 in the Global Legal Post report of 2 July 2026, when Macfarlanes moved from £140,000 to £150,000 effective 1 July 2026 and matched A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters, and Slaughter and May, and in the Nonbillable report of 20 July 2026, when Baker McKenzie London moved from £145,000 to £150,000 effective 1 July 2026. The Law Society Gazette reported on 15 May 2025 that Hogan Lovells had raised its London newly qualified base from £135,000 to £140,000 from 1 May 2025, and that Slaughter and May was holding £150,000 in that spring review. The 7 London PSL files are not all Magic Circle firms. On those files the median accepted base of £128,000, at a median 9 years’ PQE, sat £22,000 under that £150,000 newly qualified rate.
That is not a claim that every professional support lawyer earns less than every newly qualified solicitor. It is the median of these 7 accepted bases, against one published newly qualified rate. The same median sat £43,039 above the ONS 80th percentile of £84,961. A London knowledge seat can be under a City newly qualified rate and still be far above the national solicitor distribution. Both sentences are true because they use different comparators.
The US law-firm median of $255,000 sat $5,000 above the NALP third-year median of $250,000 at firms of 701 or more lawyers, as of 1 January 2025, and $120,000 below the eighth-year median of $375,000 at those firms. It sat $20,000 above the Milbank first-year base of $235,000 reported for the June 2026 increase, and $200,000 below the Milbank eighth-year base of $455,000. Against the BLS May 2025 lawyer median it was $95,330 higher. The 5 files are not identified here as firms of 701 or more lawyers. Median experience was 8 years since the J.D., which is why an eighth-year associate scale is the wrong ceiling to import, and a third-year scale is only a nearby public bracket.
The US company-side median of $205,000 sat $45,330 above the same BLS median of $159,670. It is a counsel package reported to a general counsel. In-house counsel pay more broadly is a different distribution, covered in the in-house counsel salary guide for 2026. The associate cash scale those company offers are sometimes copied from is the BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026.
A newly qualified salary is the wrong anchor for a lawyer 9 years out.
Base is not the cost of the seat.
The person paid reads gross base, bonus, and tax. The company paying reads base, bonus, employer National Insurance, and the fee.
Read the offer against the knowledge seat you are being hired to do, not against a newly qualified rate or an associate class year.
On the 7 London professional support lawyer seats, target bonus ran from 8 to 15 percent of base, with a median of 10 percent. None of those bonuses was the fee-earner lockstep bonus. A brief that includes training lawyers on the firm’s deployed AI tools cleared a higher base, £141,000 on 3 seats, than a brief that stopped at precedents, £118,000 on 4 seats. Ask which of those briefs is in the letter.
HM Revenue & Customs, in the employer rates for the tax year 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027, sets the additional rate of income tax at 45 percent on income above £125,140 in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. A London base of £128,000 sits above that threshold, so part of the base is taxed at 45 percent. Employee National Insurance is 8 percent between the primary threshold of £12,570 and the upper earnings limit of £50,270, then 2 percent. Scotland sets its own income-tax bands, so the same base is not taxed on the England and Northern Ireland schedule. Gross base is the figure in the table. Take-home depends on the tax code, the pension, and any benefits.
A US law-firm knowledge-management counsel comparing an offer with the associate scale should use the years since the J.D. and the scale the firm actually put the seat on. In the 5 files, median time since the J.D. was 8 years, 2 seats were inside the associate band for class years 4 to 6, and 3 were on a counsel scale. The median accepted base of $255,000 is the reading. The Milbank eighth-year figure of $455,000 is an associate lockstep rate, reported by Reuters on 27 July 2026 for a June 2026 increase, and it is not a knowledge-counsel rate.
Price the knowledge seat on its own base. Do not import a newly qualified rate, an eighth-year associate rate, or a general counsel package.
Employer Class 1 National Insurance for the tax year 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027 is 15 percent above the secondary threshold of £5,000 a year, including earnings above the upper earnings limit. On the London median base of £128,000, the slice above the threshold is £123,000. 15 percent of that slice is £18,450, before any National Insurance on the bonus. The threshold is used once. National Insurance on the bonus is additional. That £18,450 is employer cost on top of cash pay. It is not part of the lawyer’s base.
On those 7 seats the median target bonus was 10 percent of base, which is £12,800. Target total cash, base plus that target bonus, is £140,800. The bonus is a target. It is not a statement that every file paid it. Sartori & Partners charges a retained fee only, at 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, and the retainer is 30 percent of the fee. Applied to that target total cash, the fee is £35,200 to £42,240, and the retainer is £10,560 to £12,672. Employer National Insurance sits outside that cash figure.
The 3 withdrawn searches, 2 of them London professional support lawyer seats, failed because the offer was priced off the newly qualified rate or the associate class-year floor. A NASDAQ-listed software company in Austin put the distinction in the offer letter. The knowledge counsel is not a second general counsel. We paid a counsel package and said so in the letter. Base was $205,000. That base matches the median of the 3 US company-side seats. To price a live seat, contact Sartori & Partners or talk through the search.
A knowledge counsel is paid as counsel, and the letter should say so.
What moved, once the anchor changed.
One London law-firm seat and one New York law-firm seat, inside the medians above. Company type and role only.
A newly qualified salary is the wrong anchor for a lawyer 9 years out. A London law firm of more than 500 lawyers hired a corporate professional support lawyer at an accepted base of £132,000. The offer was accepted in week 9. The written brief was the precedent set plus a quarterly training rota. It was not a full rollout of training on deployed AI tools, so the file sits in the precedents group of 4, whose median was £118,000. £132,000 is the high end of that group, not a contradiction of it, and it is one of the 7 London seats whose overall median was £128,000. Week 9 is inside the median of 10 weeks across the 18 filled searches.
The hiring partner at that firm described the earlier miss. We priced the PSL at the newly qualified rate. The lawyers who could run the precedent set were nine years out. The search moved when base cleared £130,000. Clearing £130,000 is just above the London median of £128,000. The accepted base was £132,000.
A knowledge counsel is paid as counsel, and the letter should say so. A New York law firm of more than 700 lawyers hired a restructuring knowledge-management counsel at an accepted base of $262,000. The offer was accepted in week 11. The file is one of the 5 US law-firm seats, above their median of $255,000, and it is one of the 3 on a counsel scale rather than inside the associate band. Week 11 is the slow side of the 10-week median. The Austin company-side letter, quoted above, landed on $205,000, the median of the three US company seats, and it said the seat was counsel.
Opened, filled, and still in seat.
The retention reading uses only the files old enough for a full year to have elapsed. Later hires stay in the placement count and outside that base.
From 1 January 2024 through 30 September 2026, Sartori & Partners opened 21 knowledge-lawyer and PSL searches and filled 18. The other 3 were withdrawn after an offer priced off the newly qualified rate or the associate class-year floor. On the 18 filled searches, the median time to a shortlist was 19 days and the median time to an accepted offer was 10 weeks.
14 of the 18 had been filled by 30 September 2025, so a full year had elapsed by 30 September 2026. 12 of those 14 were still in seat. The remaining 4 were filled from October 2025 through September 2026. They count as placements. They do not yet have a twelve-month retention result. 12 of 14 is the local reading for this book. It is not a placement guarantee. The fee on a knowledge search is the retained fee described above: 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, retainer equal to 30 percent of the fee.
The 18 break down as 7 London law-firm PSL seats, 2 UK law-firm PSL seats outside London, 5 US law-firm knowledge-management seats, 3 US company-side knowledge counsel seats, and 1 UK company-side knowledge counsel seat. Law-firm seats are 14. Company-side seats are 4.
Neither the BLS count of lawyer jobs nor the SRA count of practising solicitors isolates a knowledge lawyer. The gap is the closed-search bases against those series and the published newly qualified and associate scales.
Every public figure has a document.
Accessed 7 October 2026. Internal bases are marked in the text for replacement with the firm’s file record. ONS does not publish a PSL series, and BLS does not publish a knowledge-management series.

Knowledge management lawyer salary and PSL salary: questions
What is a knowledge management lawyer salary in 2026?
On 5 US law-firm knowledge-management seats closed from 1 January 2024 through 30 September 2026, the median accepted base was $255,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 median for all US lawyers is $159,670, and it is not this seat.
What is a UK PSL salary in 2026?
On 7 London law-firm professional support lawyer seats in that same window, the median accepted base was £128,000, at a median 9 years' PQE. The ONS does not publish a PSL series; its April 2025 provisional median for all full-time solicitors and lawyers was £56,977.
How does UK PSL pay compare with a US knowledge management lawyer salary?
The London median accepted base was £128,000 on 7 seats, and the US law-firm median was $255,000 on 5 seats, both from 1 January 2024 through 30 September 2026. The figures are different currencies and different jobs. No sterling-dollar rate is applied.
Why is there no official PSL or knowledge management lawyer salary?
