Knowledge Management Lawyer Recruiting

A knowledge lawyer keeps the practice's work reusable. A legal-operations lead keeps the department's machine running. The search fails when the job description asks for both and means neither.

Brief a knowledge-lawyer search When a GC should hire one
01 The seat

Two buyers. One title. They are not hiring the same person.

Law firms hire knowledge lawyers to stop a practice from reinventing its own work. General counsel hire the title only when a qualified lawyer, not a system, has to own authorities. Confusing the two produces a salary with no product.

Inside a firm the seat is usually a professional support lawyer or a practice knowledge lawyer: admitted in the host practice, then off the pure billable ladder and onto precedents, training, and the standard for what leaves the group. A head of knowledge or a chief knowledge officer sits above that bench and answers to the partnership's technology plan. None of those seats is an associate with a lower target. The associate comparison that matters is the fee-earner scale the firm is already paying, which is a different page — the 2026 BigLaw salary scale and London lawyer salary in 2026.

Inside a company or a public legal directorate the same words describe a rarer hire. The Insolvency Service's annual report for 2020–21 records that the agency created a professional-support-lawyer role in its Legal Services Directorate once the team had reached 30 lawyers and 40 paralegals. The report's account of the work is precedents and research on points of law, across civil and criminal matters. That is the only public UK directorate that dated the conversion. Below that kind of repeat volume, a general counsel who wants “knowledge” is usually buying a legal-operations competency. CLOC lists knowledge management as one of 12 functional areas. The lawyer seat and the operations competency share a noun. They do not share a résumé.

The firm market map behind the research programme is 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles, and the programme's quarterly survey has run since 2019. That map is the profession. It is not a census of people whose title is knowledge lawyer, and we do not publish one. Since 2017 the firm has completed 400+ placements (230+ in-house), 12 of them legal operations. Knowledge-lawyer and PSL instructions are run on this page. They are not a published subset of the 12. The method is the same retained letter, described on how we run a search.

02 Roles we recruit

Name the product before you name the title.

KM hiring at a law firm is a qualified-lawyer search. A company brief is either that seat or a legal-operations competency. We write the distinction into the Mandate Blueprint in week 1.

01

Practice knowledge lawyer / PSL

A qualified lawyer embedded in one practice — corporate, funds, disputes, finance, real estate — who maintains precedents, trains the group, and checks that published know-how still matches the law. Often still titled professional support lawyer.

02

Senior knowledge lawyer

The person a practice head calls when a playbook is wrong, not when a deal needs another associate. Owns the precedent set, the training calendar, and the standard for what a model may draft.

03

Head of knowledge

Central knowledge leadership for a firm or a large legal directorate: strategy, the knowledge-lawyer bench, systems, and the line into innovation or legal operations. A management seat that still requires a qualification where the product is legal advice.

04

Chief knowledge officer

Firm-wide ownership of know-how, often paired with AI adoption. This is a leadership search, written against the partnership's technology plan, not a renamed librarian post.

05

In-house knowledge lawyer

A qualified seat on a company or public legal directorate that has repeat product and a volume of authorities the general counsel cannot personally check. Below that scale, the hire is usually legal operations, not this title.

06

Knowledge lead inside legal operations

The CLOC knowledge-management competency: taxonomies, workflows, retrieval, and a culture of writing things down. Often not a lawyer. That search sits on the legal-operations page, and we will say so in week 1 if the brief is a system rather than a qualification.

If the scorecard is intake, matter management, e-billing, or a budget the general counsel can defend, stop here and open legal operations recruiting. The published Austin file shows what that scorecard looks like when it is done honestly. Pay context for the operations seat, separate from this page, is the 2026 legal operations salary guide.

03 Demand

Work is up. Attorney lines are not. Know-how is where the gap lands.

The demand for this hire is not a headcount boom. It is departments and firms trying to absorb more matters without another fee-earner, while generative tools make an unverified draft cheap.

CLOC's 2026 State of the Industry release, dated March 2, 2026, is drawn from the 2025 Harbor Law Department Survey of 135 departments in more than 15 industries, at organizations with median revenue of $13 billion. Only 32 percent of those departments expected attorney headcount to increase. Workload was still rising in regulatory compliance (63 percent) and cybersecurity (58 percent). In the same release, 85 percent of legal departments reported dedicated AI oversight or resources. The productivity gap is the brief: more matters, a flat attorney line, and a governance duty that already has a name.

The Thomson Reuters Institute's 2025 Legal Department Operations Index, from a July 2025 survey of 128 professionals in US corporate legal departments, reads the same direction from the operations desk. Eighty-one percent reported increasing matter volumes. Fifty-six percent described the department as under-resourced. Fifty-five percent reported flat or decreasing legal-department budgets. Eighty-two percent said the department had at least one dedicated legal operations role. Knowledge management is one of the 12 CLOC competencies that role is supposed to cover. On CLOC's Knowledge Management page, which carries an event date of August 9, 2024, 67 percent of law departments rate that competency's maturity as developing. A developing competency plus a flat attorney line is why a general counsel reaches for a knowledge title — and why the first question is whether the missing person is a lawyer.

On the firm side, Legaltech News reported on September 14, 2026 that the International Legal Technology Association's 2026 technology survey covered 508 firms and 140,000 lawyers, and that generative-AI task forces were taking on management duties while technology lawyers played a smaller part in that management. A task force does not maintain a precedent. A knowledge lawyer does. The hiring decision for a managing partner or a chief operating officer is whether the practice's know-how has an admitted owner, or whether it has been left inside a committee that will dissolve after the pilot. Firm leadership searches that are not lawyer seats — COO, CFO, CIO — stay on law firm management. Associate build-outs stay on associate recruiting.

What we will not do is convert those surveys into a Sartori mandate count. The research programme's quarterly survey has run since 2019, and the market map is 1,480,000+ lawyers. Neither instrument is published as a knowledge-lawyer cohort. The 12 legal-operations placements since 2017 are a different scorecard, and the Austin file said so.

04 Compensation

One dated public band. No invented private-practice scale.

Cash for this seat is not the associate lockstep and not a head-of-legal-operations band. Where a non-recruiter source has not published a range, this page does not supply one.

01

UK public directorate — the dated band

The Government Legal Department advertised a Head of Knowledge at £74,960 to £76,405, applications closing June 29, 2026. The posting's essential technical line is qualification to practice as a solicitor or barrister, plus a senior knowledge role already done. The same advertisement's general entry rules also admit a Chartered Legal Executive who meets stated foundation-subject conditions. It states an employer pension contribution of £21,715 alongside the £74,960 salary, at 28.97 percent. GLD described itself on the same posting as nearly 4,000 people, including nearly 3,000 legal professionals. That is a public-body analogue, not a private-practice offer.

02

Private practice and in-house — what we will not invent

No non-recruiter publisher has put a 2026 private-practice or corporate knowledge-lawyer band on the record that this page will repeat. Fee-earner ceilings live on the BigLaw scale, the London salary page, and the UK salary page. They are the number a knowledge lawyer left, or refused, not the number to print on this job description. Operations pay is a third table.

03

What the search itself costs

Retained only. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation. 30 percent of that fee is paid as a retainer at engagement. A knowledge-lawyer or PSL search is not a GC, CLO, or CCO mandate: the replacement window we write for non-GC in-house work, and the window on the published legal-operations file, is 6 months. GC, CLO, and CCO searches carry 12 months. Off-limits: we do not approach lawyers we placed for as long as they stay, and we do not recruit from a client's legal department for 24 months after a mandate.

04

How to read the three numbers together

Price the seat against the GLD public band and against the fee-earner scale your own associates are on, then decide which gap you are closing. A knowledge lawyer priced as a first-year associate will not have the practice years the precedents require. A knowledge lawyer priced as a head of legal operations is being hired for a budget they may never have owned. The Austin file refused that blend.

Salary pages, each with its own sources: legal operations salary 2026, BigLaw associate scale 2026, London lawyer salary 2026, UK lawyer salary 2026.

05 Background

Qualified. Practice-fluent. Able to show the precedent.

The résumé that fails this search is a tool list. The résumé that passes names the precedent set, the training that changed behavior, and the rule for model output.

A

Admitted where the product is used

The GLD Head of Knowledge posting's essential technical line is qualification to practice as a solicitor or barrister, plus a senior knowledge role already done. Its general entry rules also admit a Chartered Legal Executive who meets stated foundation-subject conditions. A US firm seat asks for the bar of the office whose advice the precedents support. A non-lawyer can run the CLOC knowledge competency. A non-lawyer cannot sign the training on authorities.

B

Years in the host practice, then the move off the ladder

The useful candidate has practiced in the group the seat supports — funds, corporate, disputes, finance — long enough to know which clause is live. The Insolvency Service seat was created for a directorate of 30 lawyers and 40 paralegals specifically to maintain precedents and research points of law. We ask for that product. We do not publish a class-year minimum, because no non-recruiter series states one we will copy.

C

A disqualifier we have already published

On the Austin legal-operations search, a Big Law knowledge manager who had never owned a budget did not make the scorecard. Intake and e-billing were the must-haves. If your brief is that file, use the legal-operations page. If your brief is know-how, do not import the operations disqualifier and then wonder why precedent lawyers decline.

The longer argument for a London general counsel — when the seat pays for itself, and when it stays a support cost — is knowledge lawyers in the AI era. This page is the hiring instruction. That page is the conversion test.

06 The search

We will not quote a knowledge-lawyer median we do not publish.

The nearest published clock is a legal-operations file. We use it as a boundary, not as a promise. A pure know-how search is mapped against precedents and training, and it is not one of the 12.

01

Week 1 — Mandate Blueprint

Lawyer seat or operations competency. Practice group. Qualification. Reporting line. Cash, with the GLD band and the fee-earner scale in the room and no invented third number. Fee, replacement window, and off-limits in the letter before anyone is called. Retained. Fee 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Retainer 30 percent of the fee.

02

Map the practice, not the title

Sitting knowledge lawyers and PSLs in the host practice, plus associates who already maintain the group's precedents and will say so. On the published Boston succession file the map is weeks 1–2. That is a general-counsel sequence, not a knowledge-lawyer median. The market map behind the work is 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles. We do not publish how many of them carry this title.

03

Private outreach

Blind both ways until mutual interest. No profile leaves us without written consent. On that same Boston file the approach sits in weeks 2–4. We do not republish those weeks as a knowledge-lawyer result. The people who do this work are rarely on a job board, because the seat is not a step they advertise inside their own partnership.

04

The published clock, labeled as what it is

A listed software group in Austin hired its first head of legal operations with a shortlist in 21 days and an accepted offer in week 9. Across 12 legal-operations placements since 2017, the programme figures are 20 days to shortlist and 9 weeks to offer. Use that clock when the seat owns intake and spend. Do not paste it onto a PSL search and call it telemetry.

05

Assessment — the precedent, not the platform

We ask which precedent the candidate still stands behind, who was trained, and what broke. References are people who used the work. A dashboard demo is not a substitute. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. Those rates are not a knowledge-lawyer series, and we do not relabel them as one.

06

Replacement and off-limits

6 months on this seat, matching the non-GC window on the published legal-operations file. 12 months is the GC, CLO, and CCO term, and it does not travel onto a knowledge-lawyer mandate by optimism. Off-limits run 24 months on a client's legal department. We do not approach lawyers we placed for as long as they stay.

Track record cited here is the published corporate book: 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), of which 12 are legal operations; Austin file 21 days and week 9; programme legal-operations clock 20 days and 9 weeks (n=12). Market map: 1,480,000+ lawyers. No knowledge-management mandate count is published, and none is implied.

Knowledge management recruiting — common questions

What does a knowledge management lawyer recruiter actually fill?

Two different seats that share a title. At a law firm, a knowledge lawyer or professional support lawyer is a qualified lawyer who keeps a practice group's precedents, training, and playbooks current. At a company, the same title is a qualified seat the general counsel opens only when the directorate is large enough that someone other than the GC must own authorities. A systems hire — taxonomy, intake, e-billing — is legal operations recruiting, not this search. The in-house conversion test is on knowledge lawyers in the AI era.

When should a law firm hire a knowledge lawyer instead of another associate?

When the practice is re-doing the same work because the last draft cannot be found, and when associates are training themselves. The Insolvency Service's 2020–21 annual report records that the agency created a professional-support-lawyer seat once its Legal Services Directorate had 30 lawyers and 40 paralegals, to maintain precedents and research points of law. A firm below that kind of repeat volume is buying a non-billing salary for work partners will still redo. ILTA's 2026 technology survey, as reported by Legaltech News on September 14, 2026, covered 508 firms and 140,000 lawyers and described generative-AI task forces taking on management work that technology lawyers had held — the know-how standard still needs an owner.

Should a general counsel hire a knowledge lawyer?

Only at directorate scale, with repeat product. The only public UK legal directorate that dated the conversion is the Insolvency Service, at 30 lawyers and 40 paralegals in 2020–21. CLOC lists knowledge management as one of 12 legal-operations competencies; on the competency page carrying an event date of August 9, 2024, CLOC states that 67 percent of law departments rate knowledge-management maturity as developing. That competency is often not a solicitor. Create the lawyer seat when someone must verify authorities and sign the training. Otherwise fund legal operations.

What does a knowledge lawyer earn in 2026?

The dated public UK cash figure on this page is a Government Legal Department Head of Knowledge advertisement at £74,960 to £76,405, applications closing June 29, 2026. The posting's essential technical line is qualification to practice as a solicitor or barrister. The same advertisement's general entry rules also admit a Chartered Legal Executive who meets stated foundation-subject conditions, and overseas-qualified lawyers. It states an employer pension contribution of £21,715 alongside the £74,960 salary, at a contribution rate of 28.97 percent. We do not publish a private-practice or corporate knowledge-lawyer band, because no non-recruiter series we will stand behind has one. Fee-earner ceilings, which this seat is not, are on the 2026 BigLaw salary scale, London lawyer salary 2026, and UK lawyer salary 2026. The operations comparison is legal operations salary 2026.

How long does a knowledge-lawyer search take?

We do not publish a separate knowledge-lawyer clock. The nearest published file is a listed software group in Austin that hired its first head of legal operations: shortlist in 21 days, accepted offer in week 9. Across 12 legal-operations placements since 2017, the programme clock is 20 days to shortlist and 9 weeks to accepted offer. That Austin brief treated a Big Law knowledge manager who had never owned a budget as a disqualifier, so the 9-week figure is an operations clock, not a promise for a pure know-how seat. Retained terms are the same letter: fee 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation, 30 percent of the fee as retainer. Read how a search runs.

Do you recruit knowledge lawyers for law firms and for companies?

Yes. Law-firm instructions are knowledge lawyers, professional support lawyers, heads of knowledge, and chief knowledge officers. Company instructions are the qualified in-house seat, or a referral onto legal operations when the brief is a system. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), of which 12 were legal operations. We do not publish a separate knowledge-management mandate count inside either book. The hiring organization pays the fee. Company and firm briefs start at contact.

Is a knowledge lawyer the same hire as a head of legal operations?

No. On the published Austin file — one of 12 legal-operations placements inside 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house) — a Big Law knowledge manager who had never owned a budget was a disqualifier. The scorecard there was intake and e-billing. A knowledge lawyer's scorecard is precedents, training, and citation control. CLOC's March 2, 2026 State of the Industry release, from the Harbor survey of 135 departments, found 85 percent of departments already had dedicated AI oversight and only 32 percent expected attorney headcount to rise. Those two facts are why the titles get merged in a job description, and why the search has to unmerge them in week 1.
